ISLANDERS, DiPIETRO GET SMART
Team announces goalie’s scheduled day off

by Chris Botta on September 19th, 2010 at 1:52 pm

2:00 pm: As announced by the NYI, Rick DiPietro will have a scheduled day off on Monday. Might seem like minor news, but it is not. Holding the goalie back on Day 3 is evidence the Islanders’ medical staff and DiPietro – who turns 29 today – have learned the hard way that less is more. Announcing the move ahead of time to the media and fanbase is evidence, simply, that they have learned. Bravo. Comments.

Sounds like they are learning from past mistakes. Bravo is right Chris. However, I’m sure Garth and Co. are just waiting for the doctors to say, “It’s time Ricky retires.” Nobody wishes bad things upon people, not in Islanders Country atleast, but we all know this issue is a factor in selling season tickets, the salary cap, lockerroom chemistry and “The Rebuild”.

3rd time is a charm CB… So they say.

  3. avatar Michael Delman says:

Good to hear. Hoping for a return to health for DP this season. We need him.

I need a day off after playing touch football for 30 minutes so I think this is a great move.

In a perfect Islander world, Ricky makes a comeback and leads the Isles to the playoffs, then wins the masterson trophy that he has to juggle between the vezina trophy. Sigh, I can dream, right? I will settle for Ricky making a valient comeback and playing pretty well while poulin and Koiskinen get acclaimed to the N.H.L. Good luck Ricky, we are behind you and really, really want you to succeed, but if you encounter more health problems, PLEASE-just hang them up and take some other job in the organization.

He.res hoping that Rick comes back healthy and better than ever.He is an all-star.

  11. avatar German Islesfan says:

Happy Birthday Rick !! smart decision “less is more” for him.

  12. avatar Ethan K says:

Let’s hope he comes back and plays better than ever. Plenty of goalies have emerged to become great goalies in their late 20s, maybe a goalie who was already good can come back and be better!

  13. avatar brian says:

Koskinen and Poulin look like a real brigh #1 #2 combo right now (Price, Halak?? in a couple years)…DP we’ll see what he’s got and think of anything as a bonus. Wouldn’t mind seeing Koskinen and DP split some time in the future or Poulin and DP…But we have alot of security in Goalies whichever way his knees decide to go. Happy Birthday Ricky!! We’re really routing for you!

  14. avatar Nosebleed says:

Poulin will be the #1 goalie by Christmas.

  15. avatar Steve says:

Happy 29th birthday to Ricky. I really hope that he recovers from his knee injury.

  16. avatar Hud says:

DP, great Islander, works hard, loves being an Isle, but, he may be done.

  17. avatar Isles Fan in FL says:

I hope I’m wrong but I really don’t think he makes it a month into the season. I would assume they go with Rollie and ease Ricky back in, but I don’t think he’ll make too far into the season anyway. Looks like they have some legit goalie prospects and thats a good thing.

  18. avatar Examiner says:

Happy Birthday Ricky. Hope it’s a healthy year for the guy. Push Rollie the Goalie and let’s see what you can do these days.

  19. avatar Tim F. says:

    Rick who?

  20. avatar mlem88 says:

    Do less…

  21. avatar Todd says:

He’s done, should have signed Niemi

  22. avatar Brian from Massapequa says:

I am happy they are being cautious, but it is worrying news regardless.

  23. avatar bayduvinislander says:

not even gonna touch this one.

  24. avatar Brother Rat says:

I’m unconcerned. I’m still a DP fan regardless, and I want to see his hard work and patience pay off for us. Having a regular, cautious, scheduled day off is fine–but when’s his next one? Will it be every three days, or what? DP’s skills with an older, more mature brain can be a very potent weapon for this team.

  25. avatar Mark In Ottawa says:

From the title – I was hoping that it was either a contract restructuring or him being released.

Oh well – another day closer …..

  26. avatar Petey Pete says:

At this point, it might be wise for fans to write-off any expectation for Ricky in 2010-11.

If he gets us any production, then it’ll be gravy. Which is a shame, because he deserves our faith, but it’s unlikely that his hips and knees will ever be the same again. It’s not impossible, and some athletes have recovered from much worse (Josh Hamilton, Dany Heatley, etc)

That said, I’ve read a few publications lament Ricky’s woes as having occured during his “prime years”, but a goalie’s prime years aren’t 26-31, but something like 32-37, at least in Roy, Hasek and Brodeur’s cases.

A lot of good goalies become great in their mid 30s, because of heightened reflexes and the sort. Just something to think about for Rick’s future.

Nah nah nah nah. Nah nah nah nah. Hey hey hey…goodbye.

  28. avatar Spartiarti RVC says:

Day off to be smart, Or day off b/c his knee is swelling again?

Lets face it. Healthy DP makes us a team very much able to make playoffs.
Maybe we finished toward bottom last year. But we also Beat everyone of the remaining 8 teams in Playoffs last year included steamrolling the Blackhawks.

  29. avatar Perry Card says:

DP was drafted for his stick haning ability. He is above average in that area
but no where near Broduer. At stopping the puck he is average at best. I would like one of the kids to get a shot and cut ties with him
