10:30 am, NVMC: Down to a manageable 27 players, Scott Gordon’s Islanders just took the ice at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum this morning with five full days to prepare for their season and home opener against the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Comeau – Tavares – Parenteau

Moulson – Nielsen – Hunter

Bailey - Weight – Sim

Gillies – Konopka – Hilbert

Defense: MacDonald, Wisniewski, Eaton, Martinek, Hillen, Mottau, Jurcina, Gervais, de Haan

DiPietro

Roloson

Notes: Rob Schremp (back) remains out. Nino Niederreiter (bruised leg) is not on the ice yet, but could join practice. Awaiting word. Matt Martin (foot) skated before practice with skills coach Bernie Cassell and took shots on goalie Nathan Lawson.

    Wow! that’s a powerhouse!

  2. avatar fred says:

Well I bought my tickets this past weekend for the home opener. I’m excited to go but after reading what we have left I feel I may have over paid (around $500 total for 5 seats, sec 117, row b)

  3. avatar mrlbem says:

12 forwards plus Nino, Schremp and Martin, 9 defensemen and 2 goalies. That adds up to 26. Who’s missing?

  4. avatar jon says:

If Martin gets healthy, I think a line of Martin, Weight and Hunter would work out. Martin could light a fire under these vets. Anyone agree?

  5. avatar Chris says:

What about Lawson? He was not on the cut lists and appearently not in practice either? Is he Hurt? Was he forgotten about?

  6. avatar j.branny says:

    Chris,

What are your thoughts about their strategy with deHaan? Do they send him back before the Dallas game? Do they keep him for 9 games only or do they keep him for the whole season?

  7. avatar CIsle says:

Losses of Okposo, Martin and Schremp quite noticeable when you look at those 3rd/4th lines.

  8. avatar Joe G. says:

Way to put a contender on the ice wang and snow. At least i saved my money not buying season tickets.

  9. avatar Kevin says:

Why rush the 9 games at the beginning of the season? Lets wait and use the 9 games later in the season when we have more injuries. Boy does that sound bad.

  10. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

Granted the lines don’t look to menacing, would be interesting to see what they’d be with everyone healthy (Okposo, Martin, Nino, and Schremp).

D will be very interesting. Someone seems to be a candidate for waivers and someone will sit the 1st month if de Haan sticks with the team for 9 games.

  11. avatar Eric Cup says:

Hey Joe G. – what do you expect? No Streit, Okposo or Schremp. This is year of a re-build and you will eat those words.

  12. avatar McGreenspan says:

    LETS GO ISLANDERS!!

  13. avatar Brian G says:

These lines are terrible, bridgeport’s lines are similar. I’m sure the Home opener will not be sold out – plenty of tickets will be available.

CB – any chance a trade or waiver/free agent pick up could be made before Friday?

Could Gervais be moved to make a roster spot for de Haan?

Could we possibly sign Fedotenko if he doesn’t sign with Rangers?

  14. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Sure, the front lines don’t look all that deep. But I will say this…the defense looks deep and more talented than in years. And I mean YEARS. We’re going to have to win low-scoring games with tight defense and great goaltending this year, and it is certainly doable. If DP stays healthy, and Rolie, with some more rest early on, plays close to what he did last year (huge ifs on both), plus the defense we have now, it may not be terrible. A Cup contender this roster does not make, but competitiveness is certainly doable here.

  15. avatar beatlebailey says:

i couldnt belive it at the game this past saturday…at least Wang respected the fans enough to make all of those improvements to the coliseum…anyone else notice how much cleaner the place looked… improved food courts..a new coat of paint…new seat padding…wow for a few million he really took care of the fans…oh wait NONE OF THAT HAPPENED!…i felt something sharp protruding from the middle of my seat cushion..wonder what that was?

  16. avatar Eric Cup says:

I left out the number 3 as in year 3 of the re-build. As a long time fan (1975), I like what they’re doing with this team and, believe me, we all know the players who are keeping the seats warm until the injuries heal. We are on the improve – enjoy it.

  17. avatar Mike R. says:

I’m sorry but that is NOT a bad team. It really isn’t. the more I think of it…..I’d like to see DeHaan make the team (over Gervais).

  18. avatar MorDraftPicks says:

I disagree. Look at Taveras’ line. Another long season is in store with KO and Streit out. Next year will be the breakthru year to the playoffs, but by then Taveras will say bye bye. If the same rant is “no one will come here”, then trade for a legit goal scorer to play with him.

  19. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Ok, so for sake of argument, I gave each of the 25 non-goalie roster guys right now a somewhat conservative goal figure, and added for Streit’s and KO’s return. Obviously, some won’t be on the roster all season, so guys like Nino and De Haan were more limited. Here’s what I came up with, tell me where I’m grossly underestimating or overreaching:

    Tavares-33, Moulson-25, Comeau-21, Nielsen-20, Bailey-19, Okposo-18, Schremp-15, Hunter-15, Weight-13, Parentau-13, Sim-11, Martin-10, Wiz-10, Hilbert-9, Mottau-8, Eaton-5, Martinek-4,
    AndyMac-3, Streit-2, Hillen-2, Jurcina-2, Nino-2, De Haan-1, Konokpa-1, Bruno-1, Gillies-0. Total goals-263 (3.2 goals/gm, a 0.5 g/gm increase over 222 last year).

If we can go from 2.7 g/gm to 3.2 g/gm, how does that not lead to several more wins?

  20. avatar Hock says:

    - Sim
    - Hilbert
    - Hunter
    + Nino
    + Martin
    + Okposo

Then it looks like what it should be…a rebuild!!! It would be nice to have one more offensively skilled vet in the mix to help the kids come along.

  21. avatar NHL fan says:

Beatlebailey….that was Wang and the Town of Hempsted giving you the finger….

  22. avatar Chris Mc says:

Gordon could have put Baiuley or Molson on a line with Tavares but from Day 1 he has had Comeau and Parenteau. I’m sure he has his reasons if he has stuck with it from the start of training camp. I’m pretty sure none of you had been an NHL coach before. So can we keep the waaaambulence parked in the garage until we have at least played a few games that count.
I honestly think Comeau will score at least 25 goals this year and you can all quote me on it. Him and JT have some chemistry together, which was evident on a very nice goal between them on Saturday. With Schremp, Nino, and Martin in the lineup you’re looking at no Sim, Hilbert, or Gillies. Its a solid lineup. Not spectacular. But definitely solid.

  23. avatar yashin for president says:

things arent that bad guys. look at the people in Quebec not having a team. They want their team back so bad. Lets consider ourselves lucky to even have a team to cheer for. I think we will be fine and fun to watch. Honestly, having Nino and DeHaan make this team will make me want to watch even more. Lets stay positive guys.

  24. avatar Chris Stephenson says:

Hunter on the 2nd line scares me, they guy misses the net more times than he hits it. I really don’t want to be negative, but this lineup looks more like the first year of a rebuild than a third. Let Nino go back to Jr’s, don’t throw him to the wolves like they did with Bailey. Special teams are not going to improve all that much, maybe the P-kill but not the P-play.

  25. avatar GB in Da'Burgh from P'view says:

I’d rather see Moulson and Comaeu flip-flipped.

Also has Reese looked in camp/preseason? I thought he was pretty solid as learning and growing #6 last year.

  26. avatar cgs878 says:

Parenteau on the top line? Woo! Bailey on the third line? Boo! Maybe Gordon won’t roll the fourth line much. I don’t think I’m doing much on Saturday night… guess I’ll buy tickets in the nosebleed section and see what comes of it.

  27. avatar UIF says:

Sure, it looks really bad b/c of injuries, but sub out Sim, Hilbert and Gillies for Schremp, Nino and Martin, make up whatever lines suit you, and it looks better. I’m more optimistic this season than last, though losing KO and Streit was…sobering.

  28. avatar Blizzard says:

…I will be at the opener I cant wait! I want to see Nino play, hope he is suited up.

    GO ISLANDERS!!!!!

  29. avatar cjcb says:

Cant buy tickets till i know they are not going with the Isles light roster, will it be another year of tough preseason games and Sim and hilberts style 4th liners for the reg season? Please, dont do it! Establish an identity that doesnt include small or soft!!!

  30. avatar Justin says:

    Let’s go Islanders!!!

  31. avatar Jamie says:

If you want the fans to buy into a re-build of youth, Andy Hilbert and Jon Sim can’t make the team ahead of Nino and Martin. Hilbert and Sim are two guys that if subject to waivers wouldn’t even get a look. Send ‘em to the Sound!

  32. avatar Islanders1932 says:

Oh geez we’re in trouble. Injuries, another reason it would have been nice to have signed a FA winger. I am usually a very optimistic person, but after losing Streit and Okposo, it is really tough. Hopefully with our improved defense and a healthy DP we can hold the opponents score low. With that offense, it looks like our only chance unless Comeau and another player have a breakout year.

  33. avatar patrick says:

just bought tickets for the homeopener… i live in jersey and go every year but now after reading what the lines may end up being… this is terrible… hope nino and martin can play or this could end up being a disaster… just pray for the best. I hope to see DeHaan… thats who i really want to see.

  34. avatar isles71 says:

think that if Nino can go, he plays on the 2nd line…Hunter moves to 3rd and if Martin healthy he’s on the 4th (and if Hunter does not produce, you switch Martin & Hunter)…Sim & Hilbert are not worth the ice time if one they take away from the NHL development of the younger guys. The younger guys can surely handle these guys 12+ mins. per game and have more “upside” than Sim or Hilbert…besides they’re on 2 way deals anyway. Go Isles!!!

  35. avatar Pat says:

Remember this is a rebuild. Get Sim off this team. Put a kid in there ( JJ or Martin ) and let them play

  36. avatar manowar says:

Heres the problem…a team with poor offensive talent needs a coach that stresses defense system. Gordan stresses offense. When this team comes in last place how will next season be any different?

  37. avatar cjzimm says:

Bailey on the third line? What is the reason? Why not move him back to center on the second line? We have been so weak down the middle for years. I haven’t seen enough from Schremp to know if he is the answer. But I thought we drafted Bailey to be that answer. Has he not had a good camp?

  38. avatar Mario says:

Looking at that lineup, where are the goals coming from? Are we going to have to win games 2-1, 1-0. Hope the d-men hold up for the season. If Gordon can win 35 games he should be coach of the year with that lineup.

  39. avatar Spartiarti RVC says:

Our three lines would get equal playing time. Take Sim out and put in Nino and you got three scoring lines and one enforcer/shutdown line. Weight and Bailey played great together on saturday.

  40. avatar D in BIG D says:

Why is Bailey on 3rd line???!!!1st round pick = 3rd line player!!No Way.This guy should play top 2 lines period.Especially on this team.Hunter is a friggn 3rd liner not Bailey.Oh my god this is going to be a long season! If Gordo plays Sim and Hilbert again(this their 2cnd go-round w/ Isles)he’ll deserve to get replaced @ end of year.

  41. avatar robert says:

good thing i didnt buy tickets to see the home opener. but i will listen to the game on the radio. woops i forgot the islanders are the only nhl team not to have a real radio station. well at least we have a director of player development since we will have the number one pick in the draft. woops i forgot. we are the only nhl team to not have that either. this all trickles down to poor conditioning as well since a summer condition training program costs money. wang will continue to run this team to the ground. dont expect any reinforcements unless its a 4 th line scrub.

  42. avatar TM says:

Robert 41 – Yes. Thumbs up and I agree. No radio and no director of player development = loser Islanders.
