PITTSBURGH 3 ISLANDERS 2 (overtime)
A hard-earned, rare point in Pittsburgh

by Chris Botta on October 15th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
CB at FanHouse on the Penguins
Point Blank Night is Thursday! (RSVP)
Same consistent, attentive, diligent effort we’ve seen from the Islanders since the season opener a week ago leads to a rare point earned in Pittsburgh. Down 2-0, the Islanders come back in the second period on goals by Josh Bailey and Radek Martinek. They killed all seven of the Penguins’ power plays in regulation, until another mystery penalty (this time, on Milan Jurcina in overtime) led to Alex Goligoski’s overtime goal.
The bad news: two more Too Many Men penalties on the Islanders, four on the season.
The good news: the Islanders made Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin look average.
The great news: through four games, the emergence of Blake Comeau and Josh Bailey are beginning to emerge as potential, no-questions-asked top-six forwards. Comments on the game.

Rob Carlin is back! I wonder if we will get those great post game interviews with Gordon once again.

  2. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

    LET’S GO ISLANDERS!
Send them packing at 0-4 at their new arena.

  3. avatar steve says:

    Why no chat, CB?

  4. avatar admin says:

I’m here all night. Anyone can comment in here. I usually break out the Coveritlive chats for weeknights, when the crowd is really large. I’m open to be proven wrong tonight! CB

  5. avatar Islesphan25 says:

I am here…This is a good test for the Isles…

    Lets go Islanders

  6. avatar Staten Islander says:

Lets keep them winless at home

  7. avatar 1983Islander says:

MSG Broadcast looks like total crap.

  8. avatar Joe says:

What is with the terrible main camera and only the other shots in HD?

  9. avatar misterpink says:

man you have to miss godard’s hammerfists – but I think I’d rather have Gillies’ intensity. And mustache, obviously.

  10. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Nice save DP

  11. avatar Julie says:

Good evening all. I missed Wednesday’s chat so this is the season opener for me. Is it just me, or do the Penguins look a bit disorganized…?

  12. avatar billy says:

another nice start, grabner looks pretty decent. Can you imagine how good we’ll be when we get JT, KO, and Schremp back????

  13. avatar admin says:

Glad I entered the HD age. First NYI game I’ve seen on MSG and it looks like complete crap.

  14. avatar Pete M says:

And the sound is messed up too. Sounds like Howie and Butch are sitting in a barrel.

  15. avatar IzzyFranchise says:

That’s my complaint as well. The MAIN cam is the only one NOT in HD?

    Are you friggin serious?!

    That’s bush.

  16. avatar Amy9x says:

Fingers and toes crossed for Ricky tonight. I didn’t like the look of that fall on his knee a few mins ago :/ Prove em all wrong DP!

  17. avatar Pete M says:

The frequency with which this team misses the net is maddening.

  18. avatar Mike Manhasset says:

I am hoping once Wiz comes back – we dont see McDonald on the PP – how many times can a guy miss the net!

  19. I’m seeing a lot of difficulty controlling the puck from both teams. I wonder if the new ice at Consol is a tad overactive.

  20. avatar cm2747 says:

camera sux-howie sounds liek he is in a tin can

  21. avatar NickyL says:

I know it tends to work but I was never a huge fan of the shot from the blue line on a PP.

  22. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    Its not MSG….its the venue…it sucks…

  23. avatar volmeeezy says:

They said there was a concert there last night so expect the ice to be bad. Although the Islanders didn’t score on the power play, its nice to see us keep control of the puck in the offensive zone for most of the 2 mins. To me the powerplay looks much improved from last year, regardless if we score or not. Thoughts?

  24. avatar Brooklyn Stroonze says:

Could be worse……. we could be on MSG+2

  25. That’s right volmeezy, thanks for reminding me (about the concert).

  26. avatar Staten Islander says:

CB, any word on Shremp and KO?

  27. avatar steve says:

NiNo stay out of the box!

Jurchina looks like a beast on our PK.

  28. avatar Ryan says:

so not only is Dolan going to cost us the Yankees on FOX but they can’t even give us a decent HD feed….WOOO cablevision!!!

  29. avatar Brother Rat says:

Gosh, 3 SOGs for the Isles, none by a F. Listening online, not too impressive a showing so far–except that it’s great to hear Kinger again, college radio or not.

  30. avatar gino says:

my picture is great but unfortunately i have to listen to pens announcers since i have dish down here in fl. and fox and dish i guess still aren’t playing nice together yet

  31. CB – Do you remember when the 4 minutes when blood is drawn became “en vogue” for the refs to call. I don’t remember that from when I was a kid.

  32. avatar Islesphan25 says:

    neither team looks good….

  33. avatar misterpink says:

    swing and a miss

  34. avatar Ryan says:

can they hit the net please, is that so much to ask for???

  35. avatar Pete M says:

    missed another net. Geez!

  36. avatar billy says:

konopka is a friggin face off machine.
poor matty, breakaway yesterday comeau set him up nice tonight

  37. avatar Anthony Y. says:

Watching in California… with Center Ic eI get the choic eof the isles feed and pens feed. The isles one looks like a 1992 broadcast.

Anyways, 2 minutes left in the 1st, Dipietro looks as sharp as I have ever seen him. I hope he keeps it up.

  38. Great PK with a lil help from the Pens

  39. avatar Phil from Bellmore says:

    Great penalty kill!

  40. avatar Brett says:

Outstanding penalty kill. We cannot let this game get out of hand. Let’s hope they can rally around this.

  41. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Poor Moulson looks a little snakebit. If this were last year, he’d have 5 -6 goals by now,

  42. avatar misterpink says:

All these extra efforts on the ice the first couple games have been a treat to see. Whoever is responsible (Gordon? Weight?) I hope they make sure they stick around.

  43. avatar Pete M says:

I’ll take 0-0 after one, being shorthanded for 6 minutes of it.

  44. avatar admin says:

No score, end of the first. NYI kill off 6 mins of penalties near the end of the first. Shots on goal: Penguins 8, Islanders 3.

  45. avatar Pritchett54 says:

    How was the fight?

  46. avatar Amy9x says:

wow both teams looking sloppy tonight and we looked lucky much of the 1st. the boys are doing a good job of picking up DP’s rebounds, glad he’s stopping pucks tho. keep working that rust off Ricky.

  47. avatar JerseyIslander says:

If Nino keeps this up, he will be the team leader in PIM before you know it… he actually might be already! haha..

  48. avatar James C says:

I hope DP isn’t hurting too bad from that knee twist. We all know how slippery that slope is…

  49. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Rick should work the rust off in B-Port. Those fat rebounds are going to catch up with us.

Sloppy first, but I am enjoying the overall effort this team is putting in this season. Honest shifts.

  50. avatar backstop87 says:

Fight was good Godard got a few more hits in, but Gillies ended it. on a side note, I read an article today that listed the Islanders as having the sixth highest fanbase online. Probably because of CB

  51. avatar Mike from VA says:

enjoying my free preview of NHL Center Ice, but holy crap can MSG+’s broadcast look anymore like a highschool tv production? Anyways, gotta say the PK looked a lot better than it did in Washington, but we got some gifts from the Pens poor PP. Really hoping for a win, but I gotta say its nice to see that despite the major injuries, we can still hang with clubs like Washington and Pittsburgh (even thuogh they’re both not playing great)

  52. avatar Pritchett54 says:

Maybe Hofstra is broadcasting the games on radio AND tv!

  53. avatar NHL fan says:

backstop87…It is because Islander fans are not going to buy overpriced tickets. Better to follow online and TV.

  54. avatar Bishopville Red says:

    What’s the over/under on Martinek’s next injury?

  55. avatar steve says:

We look like complete horsecrap tonight.

  56. avatar Bishopville Red says:

More fat rebounds. Lucky we didn’t give one up earlier. Rick’s lateral movement looks POOR.

  57. avatar AngryPete says:

I know it’s early …. but I would like to see this team start capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. Way too many going to waste!

  58. avatar Julie says:

While I think DP is playing fairly well, he’s giving up just a few too many rebounds.

  59. avatar jimisles says:

Remember this team is without it’s top 4 players. That’s like an entire 1st line :)

  60. avatar purify says:

take a tme out…. pull ricky

  61. avatar SB says:

    Second periods aren’t our thing.

  62. avatar misterpink says:

Once DP’s down it takes him forever to get back up – there is a difference between rust and physical limitations. Other teams have to be noticing – are they really going to do this for another 70+ games?

  63. avatar jimisles says:

Yikes I blinked and down by two.

  64. avatar hollywood says:

    where’s the forecheck!!!!!!!!!!!

  65. avatar IslanderFAN says:

And suddenly the DP haters comes out

  66. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Crap luck on goal 2. But we need to sink our (few) chances, as AngryPete pointed out.

  67. avatar Joe says:

I’m a huge DP fan, but he is just not a good goalie anymore at this point, thats what barely playing for two years will do

  68. avatar Joe says:

But might as well let him play this year and see if he can ever get it back…

  69. avatar billy says:

    not comeau now, good lord!!!!!

  70. avatar SB says:

    Ruh Roh. Not another injury.

  71. avatar admin says:

Penguins take a 2-0 lead mid-second on goals by the fourth line (Rupp) and Letestu to Tangredi.

Now Comeau is down after getting leveled shoulder-to-shoulder by Letang.

  72. avatar Julie says:

I’m sorry–shoulder to shoulder? Then how the heck did his helmet come off?

  73. avatar misterpink says:

2nd goal wasnt his fault. I’m not a hater – I like the guy and wish he was in top form, but his poor mobility is poor.

  74. avatar Amy9x says:

Wow, from bad to worse and really quickly too. Was just a matter honestly, we were all D and this D can’t hold on that long. And rebounds, rebounds, rebounds.

  75. avatar purify says:

hate to say it very clean hit… love bailey not even thinking and defending his team mate

  76. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Clean hit. Keep your head up, Blakie! Got a break here, let’s do something with it.

  77. avatar Staten Islander says:

Gotta love Bailey going after Letang after the hit

  78. avatar gino says:

good hit by letang. shoulder to shoulder

  79. avatar IslanderFAN says:

DP is still a good goalie he will get better and back to his form by PLAYING more.If the guys in front of him made better plays would help…people need to understand Roloson’s career is almost over hes a FA at the end of the season The Isles wont bring him back.

  80. avatar JohnGalt says:

Pens got screwed on that call but about time we got a break. Bravo to Bailey for defending Comeau.

  81. avatar za says:

77, are you nuts? Bailey hugged him–did it out of duty–didnt send a message, noithing. Just wasted 2 mins. Pansie move.

  82. avatar chrism says:

clean hit but love bailey’s reaction

  83. avatar NickyL says:

Baily and Comeau need to be on a line. Great chemistry.

  84. avatar claude says:

god this is brutal ,Thank god comeau’s ok .Did have his head down though

  85. avatar chrism says:

bailey going for the old gordie how hat trick tonite

  86. avatar Chris Mc says:

Jeez I dont see Parenteau’s finishing skills at all

  87. avatar Bishopville Red says:

IslesFAN – Settle down. If he needs PT got get useful again, he should be in Bridgeport, not throwing away the efforts of this teammates in the NHL. The team in front of him could make better plays, but his own play is causing more headaches than the skaters are causing him.

He can’t move side to side and he gives up big rebounds. TERRIBLE combination for his line of work!

  88. avatar NYIChooch says:

    MARTINEK!!!!!!!

  89. avatar Andy says:

Pittsburgh is the new Long Island for referee snubbing?

  90. avatar M Howard says:

When was the last time Radek found the back of the net?!

  91. avatar NickyL says:

Nice. Martinek does something instead of getting hurt. tied game, baby!

  92. avatar Chris Mc says:

BC just need a little jolt to the head to eake him up again! Good job getting back into this game by the Isles

  93. avatar purify says:

    nice… god butchie is horrible

  94. avatar Frank nyc says:

Bailey showing nice hands on that goal.
    and now Martinek scoring.
All even at 2. Isles showing some heart here.

  95. avatar Amy9x says:

    Atta way boys! Take advantage!!!

  96. avatar Staten Islander says:

WOW! This is going to be FUN when KO and Tavares get back

  97. avatar billy says:

i hope we can keep this compete level up for this crazy long road sched, so impressed, we are taking every crowd out of the game. what a short burst to tie game!!!!!

  98. avatar Brother Rat says:

Unbelievable, Comeau’s really turned a corner.

  99. avatar Jim says:

Since when are the ref’s not biased against us? Since when do we catch breaks? This is a WEIRD, WEIRD game.

  100. avatar misterpink says:

FAN – What does Rolo leaving next year have to do with it – You are aware of Koskinen, Poulin and Nilsson?

Hopefully DP gets his mobility back and he returns to form, I think everyone would like to see that. But why wouldn’t you want to give your team the best chance to win every night?

    Also – NICE GOALS BOYS!

  101. avatar JT says:

Nino definitely belongs here for the season. He does not look out of place at all. That was just a great play off the boards to himself, and then the pass to weight behind the net.

  102. avatar Julie says:

    @purify
I agree entirely. Nice guy, but this is not the gig for him.

  103. avatar Pat says:

Would love to see what this team could do when healthy

  104. avatar chrism says:

nice make up call by the refs

  105. avatar misterpink says:

    annnnnnd the makeup call.

  106. avatar Julie says:

Wow, the luck all going the Islanders’ way? Does God have money on this game?

  107. avatar admin says:

Islanders tie the game on goals by Bailey and Martinek and then kill a long 5-on-3. 2-2 after two periods.

  108. avatar jimisles says:

Still here at work following on nhl.com and refreshing the PB page!!!!

Hey CB!!! Vinnie will have me working until 12:00am….lol.

  109. avatar Brett says:

Signs that this season might be different: (1) some of the “bounces” are going are way, and (2) we’re taking advantage of them.

  110. avatar JC Frank says:

I still can’t believe the change in the maturity and play of Bailey so far this year. You forget how young they were.

  111. avatar Mike says:

Is it the maturity of younger players like Bailey and Comeau or are “the replacements” that much of an upgrade?

  112. avatar jimisles says:

Anyone upset with the re-signing of The Captain?

  113. avatar Mike says:

The captain has looked like a new man this season, so no.

  114. avatar Bishopville Red says:

I’m content with Weight. He can still be a useful player and he’s a quality guy. Good vet presence for this young team.

  115. avatar Bishopville Red says:

    Bailey showing some sweet hands.

  116. avatar filti says:

just had a minor heart attack seeing ricky down

  117. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Every time DiPietro goes down, he looks 75 years old trying to get back up. His knees / hips ain’t right, no matter what anyone tries to tell you.

  118. avatar IslanderFAN says:

is the Ref sleeping? Matt Cooke clearly pushed PA Parenteau into DP.

  119. avatar Isles Fan says:

I would like to see more of Sim-Konopka-Gilles to stir things up.

  120. avatar 2Bit says:

Matt Cooke needs a beat down!

  121. avatar NYIChooch says:

Matt Cooke needs a beating. Where’s Evander Kane when you need him?

  122. avatar filti says:

make that two heart attacks. this time its alot bigger

  123. avatar Staten Islander says:

open season on DP? gimme a break

  124. avatar IslanderFAN says:

Gillies needs to take care of Cooke

  125. avatar NYIChooch says:

I’m so glad Trent Hunter is on my team…

  126. avatar Staten Islander says:

Ok, Konopka and GIllies, you have your target

  127. avatar jimisles says:

    What just happened!!!!!!!!!!

  128. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Pens announcers tripping all over themselves trying to excuse Cooke’s greasy play. He can’t survive the rest of this game if we’re to be taken seriously this year. Early gut check for our baby Isles.

  129. avatar NYIChooch says:

Seriously?!! KICK HIS ASS!!!!!! Enough already. Gillies and Konepka better make a run at Crosby and Johnson.

  130. avatar Anthony Y. says:

Nice Pittsburgh… boo Dipietro when he plays the puck because he got ELBOWED by Cooke

  131. avatar Julie says:

I forgot how nasty the Pens fans could be. I once had a guy raise his fist to me at the Igloo when I clapped when the Islanders scored (I didn’t jump up and down or scream–I just clapped–as is appropriate in someone else’s building.
And he was sitting with his young son.

  132. avatar Bishopville Red says:

    Moulson snakebit!

As good as the PK has been today, this PP needs work.

Now too many men? Ouch. this will come back to haunt us.

  133. avatar James says:

We need to stop taking stupid penalties

  134. avatar IslanderFAN says:

this is DP best game of the 3 he played

  135. avatar NYIChooch says:

I think Scott Gordon is the NHL’s version of Herm Edwards. Herm couldn’t manage the clock, Gordo can’t add to 5.

  136. avatar Mike says:

Statistically do we have the best PK in the league after tonight? Man…

  137. avatar isles6 says:

Rico has played a very solid game tonight, has been very calm, not strayed too much. Still time obviously, but as of now…

  138. avatar billy says:

DP is gettin banged up tonight, the pens announcers are right that isles need to think about winning game on PP, but at some point somenone has to knock cooke out.

parenteau just hasnt shown me realy anything and ive only missed the ranger game.if tavs doesnt get him going then he needs to sit i think

  139. avatar NYIChooch says:

I’ll take Parenteau over Hunter. At least P.A. skates.

  140. avatar filti says:

any fans can be nasty. i remember seeing isles fans and rags fans working together to take down a caps fan. scary i know

  141. avatar Amy9x says:

if DP is healthy after this game, I think he will have proved a lot about his body condition. he has really taken a beating tonight and I’m impressed he’s still doing ok.

  142. avatar gino says:

hahaha. pens announcers are ridiculous. its been the pens agains the world. gimmeea !@#$%^ break. is there any word of an agreement w/dish and fox

  143. avatar chrism says:

are matt cooke and sean avery related?

  144. avatar purify says:

    anyone else nervous!!!!!

  145. the penguins announcers are the whiniest duo in sports

  146. avatar isles6 says:

Believe me, you can find worse.

  147. avatar isles6 says:

Veteran defensemen have made a huge difference…and hey Rico, see what happens when you start drifting.

  148. avatar JerseyIslander says:

Wow… This is IT BOYS!!! DOOOO IITTT!!! POWER PLAYYYY!!!

  149. avatar NickyL says:

Sweet. Isles PP for basically the rest of the game.

  150. avatar Mike says:

that’s the best thing PAP has done in 3 games.

  151. avatar isles6 says:

I know they would have Wisniewski there, and Weight has done it before, but I hate using a forward on the PP point.

  152. avatar chrism says:

    sloppy PP

  153. avatar isles6 says:

Better win in OT, because they will not win a shootout with Penguins.

  154. avatar jimisles says:

Can’t stand listening to this guy doing color with Kinger on Hofstra radio

  155. avatar James says:

We got a point tonight, we really deserved one in Washington, but lets go get the other point

  156. avatar purify says:

really miss wiz on the point on the pp

  157. avatar NickyL says:

In 4 games, no one can say the Isles didn’t battle. We could have won each of these games. I love what I see.

  158. avatar gino says:

holy crap, can we not set up a powerplay.

  159. avatar JerseyIslander says:

I don’t know what Hunter was doing on the PP…

  160. avatar mike says:

hey CB any news on Matt Martin

  161. avatar 2Bit says:

Has Nino ever been given a chance on the PP? I haven’t been able to pay full attention to the game.

  162. avatar isles6 says:

    Well, maybe not…

  163. avatar James says:

Not having The Wiz is really evident on the PP

Our power play was much better in the 2 games he was in.

Great short-handed in OT, on a terrible call

  164. avatar jimisles says:

    Yuck 4-3 Pens PP

  165. avatar Ry Guy says:

    please get rid of jurcina

  166. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Gawd, DiPietro is fighting the puck.

  167. avatar chrism says:

phantom caal-oh my god that was bad-not surprised

  168. avatar James says:

What exactly did Jurcina get the penalty for? Playing for the Islanders?

  169. avatar 2Bit says:

we need to stop taking bonehead penalties in OT

  170. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Knopka is KILLING in the faceoff circle. Good addition for that feature alone.

  171. avatar jimisles says:

    Damn!!!!!!

  172. avatar chrism says:

thank you referees!!!!!caps game and tonite

  173. avatar Staten Islander says:

    DAMN!

  174. avatar James says:

Wow lmao, we lose 2 games in a row on a penalty that should have never been called

    Nice going refs

  175. avatar James says:

There was no penalty on Jurcina, it was a bad call

  176. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Mega fat rebound. Novice hockey level mobility. Game over.

  177. avatar purify says:

talk about the nhl taking care of ther golden childs to keep the winter classic interesting.

  178. avatar Brother Rat says:

    Very disappointing, UGH.

  179. avatar Healy says:

AWFUL AWFUL Call. Please someone tell my how the NHL doesn’t not favor its favored sons??

  180. avatar Joe from Bayside says:

it just had to happen this way….im trying to find out exactly what the islanders did to deserve such shitty luck..AWFUL call in OT. its bad when the announcers embarass the officials. id love to hear from the ref on what the hell he was thinking.

  181. avatar James says:

Yup purify, 2 games in a row on the road and we get screwed over bad penalty calls

At least they waited until we got a point this time, then they screwed us

  182. avatar IslanderFAN says:

a well deserved point for the Isles..not impress by the Pens.

a win tomorrow against The Avs.

  183. avatar Staten Islander says:

Matt Cooke needs to pay the next time they play them…….like THAT’LL happen

  184. avatar Steve M says:

With Roli in net we would’ve won. Pansy Penguins get their first win in the new arena, from us of course.

  185. avatar Brett says:

Maybe a bad call on Jurcina but they even out. I don’t think we deserved two points tonight–maybe not even one. We did deserve at least one last game, so it evens out. Can’t be feeling too bad about the road trip so far. Can’t be feeling too good about it either, but the team has been competitive in all of the games against top teams, which is important.

  186. avatar James says:

That is bull Steve, DP played a great game tonight

  187. avatar IslanderFAN says:

they couldnt make him now since the game was tied..next time they;ll get him

  188. avatar mtrico says:

    Same old Islanders.

  189. avatar JC Frank says:

The refs gave us a point, they take away a point.

  190. avatar gino says:

i said it way back in the 70′s, i said it in the 90′s and i’ll say it again. of the 4 major sports the nhl has the crappiest on ice officiating

  191. avatar Bishopville Red says:

DP didn’t have a lot to do but still managed to make it look hard. No way on earth he’s healthy. Get him in Physio or Bridgeport or both.

  192. avatar Matt says:

Dp can’t get up on rebounds. I don’t know if that is rust or knees, I would guess the latter He is toast

  193. avatar Jim M says:

The refs handed us a point tonight by calling that 5 minute major. Take the point and move on…

  194. avatar Isles fan in ATL says:

DP played solid tonight. Rebound, deflected, rebound. Roloson doesn’t make those saves either.

  195. avatar Lance79 says:

I know every team has injuries but to come away with a point in this game took another gutsy effort. Disappointing that another iffy penalty cost us but at least DP was better tonight. Pity too, as I thought our penalty killing until OT was the difference in the game.

  196. avatar NickyL says:

I really don’t know what some of you want from DP. It’s like if he doesn’t post a shutout, he stinks and should be gotten rid of. He’s going to play. So live with it.

  197. avatar Amy9x says:

I’ll take thee point. Wacky calls on both teams all night but what else is new. DP still working on things but looking much better, took a licking, kept on ticking. Not a pretty game all around.

Any one else think if the Wiz was in Cooke would have been made to pay?

  198. avatar Mike says:

2 games in a row that the Blind mice BLEW!
Time to say Bye Bye to Hunter and enough of this PA guy on the first line and PP over Moulson. Good point though Pitts is far away from the cup, Not impressed.

  199. avatar stevedepot says:

There WAS a penatly on the play. The official call was for HOOKING. IF you watch the replay, Mike MOttau hooked Crosby coming off the near boards right before Jurcina came into the crease and for some reason they called Jurcina for hooking. Good call, they got the wrong player. I’m surprised that both Howie and Butch cannot figure this out and the entire TV production crew couldn’t. This game was the continued emergence of Josh Bailey who also showed leadership by coming to Comeau’s defense after that high hit.

  200. avatar hathead68 says:

I know, DP is the reason I haven’t won Lotto yet, too! Give it a rest DP haters. Get a clue. He played well and took a beating. The guy is a gamer.

  201. avatar Doug says:

Like the effort, but gotta learn how to win. 1 win in 4 games ain’t good, especially if this team has playoff aspirations. Always like to see them come back, but like Mark Eaton said during the pregame, it’s time to take leads so that you don’t have to come back from two down and then lose in OT.

  202. avatar JohnGalt says:

We can play with anybody, except the guys in stripes. Phantom late penalties two games in a row. BS.

  203. avatar isles6 says:

Nice job by m$g graphic folks, early in the game had the wrong goalie for Pens listed on the crawl, and misspelled the Penguins player that scored one of the goals.

  204. avatar Mike says:

#179 Winter Classic minus an Old Baseball field and the 2 Golden children (AGAIN) of the NHL = YAWN

  205. avatar mlem88 says:

    Gotta love the DP bashers…

We played a pretty good game. Need to eliminate the Too Many Men calls. I can’t pass too much judgement on a team that is missing 5 of our top players, even if Pittsburgh is/was in a rut they are going to finish the season near the top of the East and we stayed with them. Positive signs that DP took a physical beating tonight and seems to have survived it, plus he’s still a pretty good goalie can’t wait for the rust to shake off completely.

  206. avatar steve says:

    PA Parentau < Jeff Tambellini

  207. avatar misterpink says:

    Bailey jersey for xmas!

Can we get two Hofstra kids on tv instead of Carlin and Butchie?

  208. avatar john says:

what a lousy call in ot. matt cooke will get his next game. glad for the point.

  209. avatar isles6 says:

Nice to see all of those upcoming Isles’ games in HD…oh wait, there is no HD m$g+2

  210. avatar Isles Fan says:

In the postgame interview Ricky looked like he was going to cry.

  211. avatar Staten Islander says:

    Another tough loss tonight…UGH

  212. avatar bob says:

I saw that too. What was that about? Do you think he reinjured something?

  213. avatar dedshark says:

    Doug 204
your making these statements about how the team has to learn to win. I understand where you’re coming from but they’re down their best 3 players and schremp also. I mean cmon we arent the deepest team out there.

  214. avatar Scott from Newburgh says:

Did DP’s face look swollen during that interview? Looked liked has the mumps.

  215. avatar Jim M says:

Ok so through 4 games heres a couple of quick hits besides the obvious positives. Gillies is worthless, 9 seconds tonight? That is absolutely useless, that roster spot can be filled by Martin. Parenteau has been bad with turnovers and for the 1 goal he scored he could barely bury it. Grabner has a lot of potential he needs more icetime. Finally, Hillen averaging a little over 10 minutes in his two games played. He was an important part to the transition game last year with solid outlet passes and we need that back in the lineup with Streit out, I would like to see Jurcina scratched. Overall 4 points in 4 hard fought games all with solid 3rd periods. I’ll take it

  216. avatar Steven says:

This team with the injuries they have are doing fine. Especially the way Blake and Josh have Developed. There are much more positives than negatives.

  217. avatar D in BIG D says:

I never want to here Weight is playing like 20yrs ago…..get over it!!This guy is KILLING our pp.He cannot play the point anymore this year if teams are going to pressure him like pens did tonight.Again Gordo misses the F****ing point on when to play Gillies.Cook used DP as a friggn’ crash test dummy and got away w/ it.When are the Isles going to pay these players and teams back for running their stars.Man up and get it done.Crosby,Malkin, any d-man would’ve done as far as I’m concerned. No need to play Gillies if he’s only going to fight a “staged” fight and not to be able to react to normal game situations.Hunter should be released!!!He sucks! No desire! No toughness @ all!!I don’t want to hear about his damn foot!Martin or Haley… either could, would replace Hunter and his meaningless hits and goals.Like our D alot but really how good would we have been w/ Streit and Wiz?MacD cannot hit the net and what the heck is going on w/ Hillen?Did the Isles already ruin him.Screw the coaches kid and….play YOUR game!!I’m thinking Nino would be served better playing down in minors for minimum 2yrs.He is going to be run and hurt by someone.Send him dowm.Sign Souray to D and send MacD down.Develop our youngsters.Go Isles.

  218. avatar Bishopville Red says:

Something else we have to get straight – the “beating” DiPietro took tonight is pretty standard fare for an NHL goalie. Yeah, he got bumped a bit, but that’s 2-3 scrums in front of the net for any goalie on any given night. And considering each scrum involved a trainer coming out to pick him up, or a prolonged stay on the ice, he didn’t exactly come through the “rough stuff” with flying colours.

Gamer? So what! lots of guys are gamers, but they’re still not NHL #1s.

Rebound deflection, rebound? His job is to NOT give up those massive rebounds! Hell, even his glove hand was giving up fat rebounds.

Roloson is clearly the better of the two goalies, and plays his best with a heavier workload. Swallow your pride and let Roli play, Charlie Wang!

  219. avatar Frustrated Voter says:

4 games in and the Isles look promising. Despite all of our concerns (complaints), the Isles seem to have made progress. That’s better than I could have hoped after KO and Streit went down and we all thought it was game over.

  220. avatar Doug says:

dedshark, totally agree that they’re shorthanded and they’re playing gutsy hockey right now, don’t get me wrong, I just think at some point, injuries or not, you can’t keep going down 2, 3 goals and expect to come back. Even just scoring the first goal is SO important in this league. The statistics are ridiculous for the team who scores first.

  221. avatar misterpink says:

The whole DP lover/hater thing reminds me of creationists/evolutionists. The DP hater/evolutionist: “Look at this chart I’ve made detailing how long it takes him to get back on his feet compared with the average time for every goalie in every game played so far this year … clearly he should not be playing” .. The DP lover/creationist: “You can’t prove he didn’t play great! Just a little rust! You can’t say anyone else would have stopped it! We love you Jes .. err Rick!”

  222. avatar patrick says:

I think jurcina has been really good on the kill. When the wizzer get back he should help with the transition

  223. avatar Brian G says:

    the bad news:
Trent Hunter looks hurt…he is usually slow but looked even slower in the 3rd period (Call up Martin?)

Jurcina turned the puck over a bunch of times…he should be scratched tomorrow for the return of the Wiz

more bad News, Gillies handcuffing the coach by taking up a roster spot…all I have to say is 9 seconds for the game…this guy cannot take a regular shift…if you cannot earn the coach’s trust, you can’t be in the NHL – big deal he had a useless fight…Maybe we will see Matt Martin tomorrow night

  224. avatar Brett says:

Moulson is having issues finishing and its getting on my nerves. Too many missed chances.

Listen, with all the injuries and Wiz out, the Isles are playing good games against top teams (Caps/Pens). Granted we are all sick of saying “good effort” and rightfully so, but hopefully we will get to see JT back tomorrow (will be a HUGE help offensively) and the Wiz will be back. Hoping to see schremp by Halloween time. They need to continue to battle hard and get points until we are at full strength. Avs will not be an easy game, but its at home. I’d like to see Rollie after DP played a great game, but took a lot of hits, let him rest. Dont see the use in playing Trent Hunter right now, he is slow as it is and with the foot injury he’s basically useless (and he hasn’t hit the net yet). Looking forward to JT freeing up space for the rest of the boys and Wiz/Weight bringing back a stronger Power Play.

    Go Isles!

  225. avatar mlem88 says:

Also anyone trying to blame that 2nd goal on DP is clearly watching a different game…

  226. avatar rochfire says:

Have to take the point and move on. Like most, I see and am encouraged by the progress of Bailey and Comeau, almost like FA signings. DP looks better each game. Hope for 2 pts tomorrow against a solid Colo. team.

  227. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Looks like the only thing that can beat the Islanders this year is poor late official calls.

This team is not an easy out. Once they have the full compliment of players back and healthy this team may steal this wins instead. I just hope it’s not to late.

The prediction of lots of one goal losses this year so far is holding true.

  228. avatar The New Isles GM says:

Effort was there. Power Play was weak. Pittsburgh couldn’t have spoon fed us a chance to win any more than they did. We never took advantage of those two Cooke calls. Yes the Jurcina call was weak, but Pittsburgh was bound to put it away after all the chances we blew. That’s what seperates a playoff team and a non playoff team. Not happy with these last two games.

  229. avatar Michael says:

Trent Hunter is not playing well at all. You can see the frustration on his face. Maybe he needs a day off. DP still has mobility issues. He gets up so slow and has trouble moving side to side. I really feel Roli should be getting the majority of starts this early in the year.
Which guys are going to be in the press box when JT, Schremp, and Wiz come back?

  230. avatar vrinqueens says:

I knew if they didn’t score when given that late Power Play (2:17)to go in the 3rd, for sure a make up call was coming. A phantom high stick…. game over.

  231. avatar isles316 says:

Clearly the Islanders have more fight and have improved but they have still only won 1 game out of 4 so lets not get too carried away.

  232. avatar Merrick says:

Agree that Gillies is a total waste of a roster spot. His fights in the first few minutes this week were so minor league. Get a real player.

  233. avatar D in BIG D says:

Jurcina stays! This guy makes the subtle plays plus I think he’s played more physical than advertised. The d is w/o a doubt a 100% better than last years and yes I know its early. Also agree DP is not right.Move on,get past it,play Roly.DP is more than likely done.Where’s this Lawson cat?Go Isles.Oh and yes Moulson is having finishing issues.Yes I did predict a big year from him but that was playing on #1 line not 3rd(2cnd)line.Still great scoring chances must be buried.PA is running out of time on 1st unit.Still cannot give up on him.He will produce and does play w/ some fire for a scorer-type.Go Isles.

  234. avatar Jim says:

Joe Beninati and Billy Jaffe= DREAM TEAM BABY!!!

    Never going to happen though.

  235. avatar MAD FAN says:

Lets not get carried with Comeau please …oh too late

  236. avatar Dan Miranda says:

Did you say “top six forwards no questions asked” as in the league?! I don’t see that, but I’m happy you do!

  237. avatar JM says:

I hope they release Parenteau when Okposo returns. Grabner has speed but doesn’t like to get involved. Officiating was poor in this game and just about every other games. Time to go back to one ref and let the players police the games. Fewer cheap shots and ticky-tack penalties…Let ‘Em Loose Bruce!

So far, team showing promise. The East is wide open. Most teams are about equal.

  238. avatar sheppy says:

Brian G, can you post without mentioning te 4th line LW? As if Gillies, and his lack of ice time, has led to any losses. He is on this team. Get over it. If you are such an expert, stop posting on this list and apply for a job with the Isles. Maybe, you can make better decisions than Garth. Until then, stop harping on Gillies. He serves a role. A lot of guys see it. Regardless of what WE see, the guys making decisions see it. In the end, that means a hell of a lot more than what you or I think. Now, I can go back to reading every thread that deals with the team waiting for more anti-Gillies posts. Carry on…

  239. avatar Al S. says:

Very exciting time to be an Islander fan, I really like the way this team competes. Comeau and Bailey continue to impress and they seem to be developing into legit top 6 forwards, Bailey just looks like a more confident, complete hockey player. Can’t wait to see Tavares and Okposo healthy and back in the lineup, that would make 4 legit top 6 forwards. DP looked much better tonight as well, maybe we get lucky and he returns to form, if that happens this team will be a playoff contender in my opinion. When you start to think of a couple of years down the road w/ El Nino, Petrov, that nutcase Kabonov, DeHann and Hamonic…we’ll don’t want to get too far ahead of myself but it’s hard not to be optimistic about the future of this team. Now all we need is an arena…

  240. avatar gordy lane says:

I do not really understand all the DP haters out there. If you were offered a 15 year contract wouldn’t you sign it. Then he gets hurt and he actually tries to hard to get back instead of sitting back and eating donuts while he lites cigars with all his money. He gets hurt again. He was just starting to come into his own when he got hurt the first time. Everyone can let up a bad goal every once in a while. Just ask Marty B on the wrap around by Matteau. The whole team and especially DP have my support.

  241. avatar Nyichamp39 says:

May I say congratulations to this team. FinAlly some passion. I almost cried when Bailey threw down the gloves to defend comaeu. That Is how a team I’d supposed to be. And then the kid comes back with a goal and Comeau has two assists. Nasty. Well deserved point.

  242. avatar JTorBust says:

Great effort boys , best part of the game is when Josh Bailey stuck up for Blake. How do you let someone run the goalie twice ?

  243. avatar Original Rob says:

DiPietro is constantly too far out of the net and gives up big rebounds, leaving half the net empty. Roloson is plain and simple better than DiPietro right now, and yet you can be sure that Charles Wang’s mandate is that as long as he’s healthy, DP is #1.
Essentially, Wang is costing us wins.

  244. avatar UIF says:

Agreed on Comeau and Bailey. Need to get some players healthy to help them out now. I’m guessing Hunter rests his hurt foot when/if Tavares comes back tomorrow?

  245. avatar Original Rob says:

But on a positive note I never thought Josh Bailey could play ONE game as well as he’s played all 4 so far. I’m excited about him. And I hope JT is back tmrw.

  246. avatar Dan says:

Team played another good game without the top players. Hopefully we keep up this play tomorrow when we get two of them back. This team never gives up and is always working. If they get healthy and stay healthy we are going to see some nice games.

I was really excited about bailey’s hands on his goal. Looked like a true goal scorer. Kid is growing up fast. I hope he keeps it up.

DP really stays on the ice long after saves, goals given up, and hits he takes. And every time I think…….not again, he is hurt. He must feel pain if he stays down that long. Scares Me. I think he is never going to play more than 40-50 games a year. We are always gana have to roll with a 1a, 1b cast in net

  247. avatar Frank nyc says:

honestly Dan i think DP stayed down for a long time every time he was hit tonight to try to draw a penalty. i think it was an act.
Good game tonight. I really like the progress im seeing in Comeau and Bailey. The team as a whole looks pretty good and this without arguably their 3 best players.

  248. avatar stu oppenheimer says:

Moulson did NOT look good out there….he looked winded and dragged across the ice for much of the time

  249. avatar Derek A says:

Al S you said it all…

  250. avatar Dave says:

I think we all have to realie at this point that DP is gonna play but that being said the Isles missed too many chances again and thats why, once again, they came up just short. Didn’t capitalize on that late PP and the call in OT was absurd but we never get repsect anyway

  251. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

Love Bailey’s crisp passes! He can really thread the needle, and has a great chemistry with Commeau. P.A is getting better, but he can’t seem to hold on to a pass, definitely does not belong on the first line. And was it me or can anyone tell me why Rick gave such a boring, crappy, I don’t want to be here, interview?? Too bad, I thought he was solid. He wanted to leave after every question. I have a feeling something is not right in D.P. land. Otherwise another gritty effort by the boys. hope J.T comes back tomorrow, we could use his scoring touch against the Avs.

  252. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

DP always said he wanted to play his whole career on LI before the contract. Got to love that. He looked good tonight and took alot of abuse. The team looked good. Nino makes alot of right plays, is quick and can dish it out and take it. Good point. Would have been nice to get 2.

  253. avatar BringBackNyles says:

The last two years we had a lot of games were we got a point and felt it was a lost point, these last two have felt like we gained points

  254. avatar Thomas says:

CB why doesn’t Gordon ever seem to question the refs? This team continously has marginal calls go against them that affect outcomes, it’s very frustrating.

If the Rangers get a bad call that cost them a game, Tortorella makes sure the whole world knows about it and both Ranger announcers complain about it. Instead Howie Rose tries to point an Islander break (which he did once again tonight on the Comeau hit). We seem to have the only coach and only announcing team that doesn’t say anything.

  255. avatar Spinner9 says:

Goring made the point that Hunter had hurt his foot so that may explain his even more limited mobility late in the game. Would like to see Cook run at but given the situation you just can’t risk an instigater penalty on the road, late in a tied game. Gillies will sit once Tavares comes back and they’ll move Weight to the fourth line. He’ll probably only dress against certain teams. The DiPietro bashing is getting absurd. Many of you have made up your mind about him prior to him stepping on the ice and then you look for evidence top prove you right instead of objectively evaluating the situation. He was the better of the two goalies tonight. And while I really appreciate what Roloson did over the course of the year he was very shakey earlier last season. Folks are making him out to be a cross between Patrick Roy and Billy Smith. The truth is he is a solid goalie with a career losing record. He is also over 40 and not part of the future of this team. I think Dipietro took a big step forward tonight.

  256. avatar jaymz27 says:

They ax Billy Jaffe, who is a national color commentator and they keep Rob Carlin, who is an established hack. Did they watch the broadcasts last season?

  257. avatar 50 in 50 says:

#235 Are you kidding. SO Gillies plays 3 min a game (if even that much), the fact is you need a guy like him to protect guys like Bailey Okposo and JT. He needs to have a refular shift w/ the 4th line to keep things honest and safe out there… Learn the game before making a comment…

  258. avatar Jim Clark says:

On the ESPN Melrose Line podcast for Oct 14, the mullet said the Islanders have been a pleasant surprise this year. Disappoibting the team couldn’t get the win but I think most of us would have settled for a loser’s point before the game started. DP continues to improve but whether he will ever make it back to where he was remains to be seen.

  259. avatar Islebethere4u says:

Some see the glass half full, some half empty. Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins were not about to be embarrassed by the Islanders tonight. They were hard on the puck all night. They outplayed the Islanders most of the night, and except for a few lucky bounces, the game might never have made it into overtime. But that’s not to take anything away from the Isles. They also played hard and gritty considering what they are missing from their lineup. Thanks to a phantom call by the ref, the Pens took it in o.t. Bailey, Comeau, and the D corps are the three Islander stars tonight. Now lets see what they have left in the tank vs. Colorado.

  260. avatar Drive45 says:

Some of you guys need to realize that this team is not being built for this year. It for the future. Roloson is likely the better goalie now but they got to see what DP can do. He is under contract for another twelve years. Roloson has one year on his contract an will be 42 next season. Sucks that the team is stuck with the stupid 15 year contract, but they have to now deal with it and see what DP has left.

  261. JOSH BAILEY! Another great game and sticking up for Comeau…I hope the whole team took note of that. And everyone stepped their game up after that incident. Keep it up JB!

That mystery call….awful. Makes no sense whatsoever.

I’d like to see Nino or Grabern on the PP rather then PA. I don’t have the confidence there.

I thought DP was great. That abuse has got to stop though.

  262. avatar Darren says:

I love the game, but the officiating in the league is disatrous.

  263. avatar Darren says:

Sorry for the spelling above. Very late!

  264. avatar bayduvinislander says:

I thought DP was average at best, he looks as stiff as a board out there, and always seems very slow to get back on his feet.

  265. avatar JIm says:

Third year and Bailey is really starting to bloom. Comeau is coming of age. These kids are really starting to blossom. Get JT back and healthy and they will be a tough out for any team. Finally some passion here. Defense continues to improve. They are finally an exciting team to watch. Things are getting better. We have some tough guys wish they would stick up for the goal tenders more though. DP improves with every start.

  266. avatar JP in NJ says:

I DVR’d this game and finished watching at 1:30 a.m. These Islanders do not let you go to sleep!

The wins will come. When you play as hard as this team is playing, the wins will come.

I love this team right now. You could just imagine Crosby & Co. thinking: “Who ARE these guys?”

Frustrating to have to games against the best in hockey decided on awful calls in the last two minutes. But nothing’s going to come easy to this, and that’s just the way it’s going to be.

  267. avatar justin says:

    Matt Martin please!

  268. avatar JS43 says:

I agree with #246 , Wang is costing us wins…Bottom line ; Roloson is the better Goalie…One thing a fan has notice is that Roli is steady and confident in net…DP is not…He is all over the place…He is showing improvement but not enough to compare with Rolosons peformance…So where does that leave us ?

  269. avatar JD says:

Can’t believe some of the Gillies haters. The guy serves a role bottom line. If he wasn’t in the lineup, everyone would be complaining about the lack of toughness. Hopefully we have a good turnout tonight. Our guys deserve a good welcome home tonight. As far as the attendance goes, anyone check out what the Devils have been drawing. Its not just us with attendance woes. 12k or less last night and Monday afternoon.

  270. avatar shlo says:

Sign Roli for an extension NOW. DP is not getting to where he was anytime soon.

  271. avatar mike says:

Pens announcers are horrid. They make me want to see someone put a serious beating on Sid.
I had concerns about Nino being 18 and taking too many shots like JT
Last year, but he plays hard and physical. I think he should stay and
Develop here, not sure what another year in junior hockey would do.
Not impressed all with PA, I would rather play Grabner, who at least has some jets and might be able to create some opportunities.

  272. On the hit on Comeau, good response by Bailey. I bet that fired up Gillies after seeing one of his teammates take that hit.

  273. avatar kallur says:

Good effort, Parentau looked a tad better, Grabner continues to impress, he’s fast and good defensively. Points will come. (Why wasn’t he playing PP?) I was against Neidereiter making the team, but he plays with poise. Bailey, a strong game, absurd penalty call in overtime. Still, DiPietro looked awful on the goal. We’re pissing points playing him as the #1.

  274. avatar kallur says:

By the by, call me old-school, but I had no problem with the hit on Comeau. Borderline legal, but on the fair side of the border, to me.

  275. avatar ExSection307 says:

What a difference Josh Bailey at 20 vs 18. Makes you wonder if it makes sense to play an 18 yr old ( i.e., Nino ) when the extra year in juniors can provide some time for him to get stronger. Bailey looks like an all-star, but the extra 10lbs of muscle makes a huge difference.
Not loving Parenteau. I’m not seeing what the love affair with him from mgmt is. Put me in the camp that would like to see Matt Martin here.
Not going to comment on DP. Was never a fan, will never be.

  276. avatar Orange&Blue says:

Sick and tired of these phantom calls. Yes, we should have put these guys away in the final 2 mins but Jurcina did nothing wrong.

Matt Cooke should be thrown out of the NHL. All he does is try to attempt to injure players each game. He ruined Savard’s career and any chance Boston had, and he could have ended Comeau’s career as well. It was a matter of inches. Hey Gary, this is why you let the players police the league!!

This team is going to be real tough when JT and Okposo are in the lineup.

  277. avatar BIGSAVE says:

The ref was just picked the wrong man’s number in overtime. He meant to call Mottau. The penalty in the second was undeserved so it evened out. They played hard and they keep battling and I don’t think they look out of place. They just played the top two teams in the eastern conference and could of won both of them without JT, KO, MS AND Shrempy can’t wait to see THE ISLES when they are all back.

  278. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

I admit the thought of starting the season without K.O., Shremp, Streit, made my stomach drop, but now I actually think it showcassed our other kids flying under the radar. This gives us an opportunity to see what they can do–but yes, I can’t wait to see the full healthy team! Just hope they leave Commeau and Bailey intact!

  279. avatar Matthew Dillner says:

I am very proud of these young Islanders. With effort and hard work it’s always possible to be a successful underdog.

As far as the hit on Comeau… I don’t think it was a dive. I dont think he faked it. That was a HARD hit. His head was down goin across the line. Letang hit him clean under the arm. It was just so hard it whipped his head a little. The officials definitely jumped to that call.

  280. avatar Chris Mc says:

Im tired of hearing people saying the two penalties evened out. Its one thing to make a questionable call in the second period of a game and its a whole different story to give the home team a power play in OT on a questionable call. That like saying we got a roughing the punter call in the first half which kept our drive alive and they got a pass interference call on the 1 in OT to give them first and goal. Please stop saying they even out.
