SNY POINT BLANK TV: KEVIN WEEKES
On the Islanders’ goaltending, present and future

by Chris Botta on October 19th, 2010 at 3:02 pm

RSVP: Point Blank Night is Thursday!

Thank you to HNIC’s and the NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes for his insight on Roloson, DiPietro, Mikko Koskinen and Islanders goaltending consultant (and Kevin’s personal goalie coach) Sudarshan “Sudsie” Maharaj.

Not much news out of the Country so far today. Josh Bailey (hip flexor injury) is day-to-day and unlikely for Thursday. I’ll be at practice tomorrow, as will possibly a recall from Bridgeport. I hope you enjoy the video. Just remember, I’m a blogger…not Brian Duff. Comments.

Nice work CB! Some great points by Weekes, I am much more comfortable with this goalie duo. Rollie seems like a great goalie and great person judging from his interviews, a real character guy. I think they should avoid having a #1 and have 1/1a goalie tandem.

  2. avatar Ethan K says:

Nice job, Chris. Very professional. I always like to hear insights from goalies because they always know so much about the sport and the style of play.

  3. avatar backstop87 says:

Great segment on goaltending Chris, very professional and flowed nicely, Congrats!

  4. avatar derek says:

Good job CB, they should give you Button’s job.

  5. avatar JerseyIslander says:

CB… all fancy schmancy with his own segment! Awesome stuff, I’m loving this partnership you have with SNY!

  6. Good stuff! Weekes is excellent…features like this are another bonus to this blog.
Interesting stuff about the “butterfly” technique, makes total sense – I totally forgot about Lord Byron…

I still can’t get over the Roloson performance, I’m going to re-watch later. So happy for JT too. I’m hoping MM is the call up…

  7. avatar Alex says:

Very nice upgrade. Looking very professional.

  8. avatar Kevin M says:

Always liked Weekes, nice guy and very informative when he speaks.

Going forward, I’m not so sure the Isles will need DiPietro if he struggles to find his old form. If he does, it’s a huge bonus, as we all know what he is capable of, but if not, they have enough goaltending depth in the system that one of Kosk, Poul, etc. will step up a year or two down the line.

  9. avatar the1gwiz says:

Greetings, production value! Good stuff, CB, looking forward to more.

  10. avatar NickyL says:

Great work! I look forward to more stuff like this! Your stock has skyrocketed CB! Is Point Blank Cereal not too far behind?

  12. avatar Ryan says:

  13. avatar Chris R says:

I can see either Matt Martin or Joensuu getting the call.

  14. avatar JKP on LI says:

    Gotta love the orange tie.

    Weekes really knows his stuff.

  15. avatar JoeRiverside says:

  16. avatar Petey Pete says:

Dream scenario: SNY purchases the Isles TV rights, Billy Jaffe and Howie Rose broadcast the games, with full pregame and postgame roundtable analysis led by our very own Chris Botta.

What are the chances of this happening, 50,000 to 1???

  17. avatar BT says:

    CB is a G.

  18. avatar scottd says:

This site just keeps getting better. Well done. Keep it up!

  19. avatar Blizzard says:

CB- I didn’t know what to expect from this interview by phone … but it was pretty damn good. You did a great job framing the questions to make the interview flow. Don’t knock yourself … I think as the format of this site evolves you’re going with it. Look forward to more of these.

On Week’s comments about Europe … that is something I’ve often wondered about. The fact that a lot of Euro Goalies come here with great success. I wondered if it was the training they got, or the fact that since the angles in N.A. are more sharp that they don’t need to go east / west as much in their crease. The traffic is something I haven’t thought much about … but that makes sense too.

  21. avatar Frank nyc says:

Not to shabby Chris. Good to hear Kevin Weekes insight into the Isles goalie situation.

  22. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

    Thanks CB for the video.

Guess it’s a good sign Bailey hasn’t been officially ruled out yet for Thursday but understand him being unlikely to suit up. Get well soon. Matt Martin time anyone?

Chris, on an unrelated note: Would love to get some early feedback on the radio broadcast with Hofstra thus far. Live in Manhattan and don’t get the station out here.

  23. avatar Donna says:

The Islanders goalie situation is certainly intriguing and I really enjoyed listening to Weekes insights and opinions. this site just keeps getting better and better, improved production value from SNY partnership is excellent. Will/has Roloson participated in Rob Carlin’s 10 question challenge??

  24. avatar Potvin#5 says:

Great work Chris. You seem very comfortable in front of the camera. I think we can see the arc your career will probably take. Good Luck and keep the segments coming.

  25. avatar Russel Ginart says:

CB excellent job! How about joining Howie in the booth soon?

  26. avatar Brett says:

Great interview! So much more informative than the typical interview. This is a great format with a lot of potential. As a loyal reader that has followed your blog since the very beginning, it’s exciting to see the huge steps in video production since the infamous “kidnap” video.

  27. avatar iselsfan39 says:

CB I really hope this is the start of the Islanders going to SNY every game in HD and we wont have to worry if the game is in HD or not. I want to get away from MSG, MSG +, o yea dont forget MSG + 2 (no hd).

  28. avatar justin says:

    Matt Martin Please!

  29. avatar MAD FAN says:

Islander games should air on SNY. No Met games after September…Lets go Yankees …LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!

  30. avatar Blizzard says:

…..the cream always rises to the top. This blog is aces….always was. Its like nirvana for a die hard Islander fan. It is for two reasons. Mr Botta who is a professional and talented. And the diehard fans who live the dream of the drive for five!!!!!

  31. avatar Hockeymandad says:

Love the goalies point of view since that’s what I play when I do play.

Will you be at the game Thursday? I will be with my little girl, would like to say hello if you are.

  32. avatar Alan says:

I love Kevin Weekes’ insight – Chris, you’re taking this site to another level and I think the New York Islanders should take notice – well done.

  33. avatar robert says:

hopefully this is just the start of what can become. if the isles continue to progress even though they have very little resources, maybe they could be on sny in HD instead of the rags channel not on HD. from there they might be on a real radio station where more then just a few people can hear them and even get coverage from the ny papers and move to queens. remember the rags are against the isles moving to queens and they of course like that the isles are treated like garbage and ignored by the media because if that day ever did happen, msg knows the isles would be number one in the area by far. lets go isles!

  34. avatar Drake B says:

I thought it was very interesting to hear Kevin talk about Maharaj and his relationship with him as well as Rick’s relationship with him….it is quite clear that Maharaj is a great teacher and Ricky and Rollie are very lucky to have him around. There was also conversation about the European goalies and coincidentally Maharaj’s name came up again. I have always found it very interesting that the Isles have a goalie coach and a goalie consultant…..the only team in the leauge that operates in this manner. The Isles lose money year after year and I don’t know how they maintain two guys on the payroll. In listening to this interview it is quite clear that Maharaj plays a major role with the team. Dunham and Snow are old college buddies; other than playing golf together I am wondering what Dunham actually does for this organization……..ridiculous.

  35. avatar robert says:

i have to say that is a very good valid point. since the isles are the only team to have a goalie coach and goalie consultant not to mention so called gm snow, you would think gm wang would get rid of one of those and hire back a director of scouting especially since gm wang doesnt spend any money not to mention the isles have very few scouts. nah… that would back too much sense.

  36. avatar robert says:

correction. the last line should say that would make too much sense.

  37. avatar Numbers65 in OHIO says:

Great new video format. Top notch. You seemed to be in your true element. Great to hear from Kevin Weekes. Another great face and voice of the game.

  38. avatar Numbers65 in OHIO says:

    About the HD thing…
I finally got an LCD TV, and although I did not yet take my cable box in for the HD version, ALL games have been clear thus far EXCEPT the game against Toronto. That picture was far from sharp. I got it thru Center Ice via Time Warner. It was the home broadcast. That was the only game this year that had TERRIBLE resolution. CBJ games are clear. I second Petey Pete “Dream scenario: SNY purchases the Isles TV rights, Billy Jaffe and Howie Rose broadcast the games, with full pregame and postgame roundtable analysis led by our very own Chris Botta.”

  39. avatar rb says:

CB, with each video you get more and more polished. Best Isles content, only slicker!

Interesting that Weekes brought up Felix Potvin when talking about Lundquist because that’s exactly who I’ve always compared him to as well. And if Lundquist doesn’t get off the goal line, he’s gonna fall off as he gets older and the reflexes aren’t quite as sharp.

  40. avatar henry says:

Congratulations, Chris. You’re doing really well.

After Dwayne’s performance in Toronto I’d love to see him with the majority of the starts. Remember last year? He was our best player.

Love DP, but, Dwayne is great. Let DP start next year.

  41. avatar Ct 1970s says:

    Great interview.

  42. avatar Derek A says:

Well done, I think a Islanders Podcast would be awesome. Any chance of this?

  43. avatar Derek A says:

I agree with Henry, think DP should ease back into things. If he plays 30 games and stays healthy things will be looking up for him next year.

  44. avatar Coral Springs Isle Fan says:

Great job CB and the same to Kevin Weekes. That was a well done piece with your questions leading the way to well described responses from Kevin.

Ricky is on his way; he looked much better positionally against the Penguins and was square to the shooters. You can tell though that he is struggling seeing the puck with traffic in front of him as it appeared from watching that there were several shots that he didn’t seem to see but missed the net or were deflected on the way in. That will get better with time and playing in games.

I would like to see Rollie in net against the Lightning and DP get the game in South Florida against the Panthers. A game in which I will be attending :)
