WISNIEWSKI SUSPENDED BY NHL FOR TWO GAMES
Defenseman sits for Caps and Penguins

by Chris Botta on October 12th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

FanHouse: Wiz-Avery video, reaction

5:40 pm: A league source has confirmed that James Wisniewski has been suspended by the NHL for two games. I look forward to seeing how they describe the defenseman’s gesture in the press release. In an Islanders statement, Wisniewski said he will accept the NHL’s decision and move on.

One game too many, in my viewpoint. One game for throat slash (Boynton), one game for stick threat near the face and delivered to the back of the leg (Cammalleri), two games for…you know. This was certainly historic and unprecedented. Can never figure this stuff out and not about to try now. It’s up to the Islanders if they want to say anything. Hillen and Gervais are the lefty and righty warming up in the bullpen. Comments?

    Bush league.

Actually, I’m surprised it wasn’t 6 games. Colin Cambell sucks.

  2. avatar DM says:

Agreed. One game maximum is what should have been the ruling.

  3. avatar I Want My Free Chili! Let's Go Islanders! says:

It’s gonna be tough for the Isles these two games without, what is now, their top defenseman. I like Wiz’s attitude, though.

  4. avatar John Goscinski says:

    lolercoaster, I’m not even mad.

  5. avatar Dan says:

One game whould have been enough. I saw it on youtube- I’ve seen worse. I think a fine would have been reasonable.

  6. avatar GD says:

wiz should appeal this on grounds that it is excessive based on previous suspensions and no history.. this is a clear joke of a move by colon

  7. avatar Peter says:

Stuff like this makes me want to give Campbell an obscene gesture…no logic to suspensions.

  8. avatar Staten Islander says:

2 is the most it should have been, knowing who was passing judgment, I’m SHOCKED it wasn’t 30.

  9. avatar spencer says:

Why is anyone suprised! our next two games feature the two golden children of the NHL obv they dont want our best defencmen in the game! Face Palm!!!

  10. avatar tom27 says:

Not surprised colin campbell hates the islanders this is just more proof that he never gives us a fair shake. I hope they fight this once more he sticks it to us.

  11. At least there not making him go to rehab!!! I, for one, laughed my a$$ off. Avery got a taste of his own medicine, a well deserved taste. Wiz will become a folk hero in the Country over this crap! Believe it.

P.S. Who do these guys think they are scoring 10 goals in two games? Last season we didnt score our tenth goal until January!

  12. avatar Green19 says:

Isles should trade for Gregory Campbell. Just might stop the nonsense.

  13. avatar Shawn says:

This is total BS, how do they justify this suspension considering what Cammalleri got for an actually dangerous slash?

  14. avatar Brian G says:

    1 game or a fine….whatever

  15. avatar JT says:

Garth should push back or Wiz should challenge to get it reduced to 1 game. Colin Campbell is ridiculous.

  16. avatar Mike says:

The extra game is because cambell still hasn’t gotten over getting CRUSHED in the 82 finals by us.
    cambell you SUCK!

  17. avatar James says:

NHL is suspending The Wiz for showing Avery how to use a Shake Weight? Ridiculous…

  18. avatar Savvy says:

Now we need to go out there and win both games in Wash & Pitt.

  19. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

Whatever. Well worth it if you ask me. Happy Avery got a taste of his own medicine and sets up a nice side plot for the 5 more Isles/Rags games this season. Guy showed what a character he is and hopefully the fans respond to him when he returns on Saturday. Is it too early to sign him to an extension?

This is big for Jack Hillen, assuming he gets the nod over Bru-NO. Needs to come out and play a couple of strong games and maybe some 2nd PP unit time. Maybe he can push Jurcina out of the Top 6 when Wiz comes back.

  20. avatar Andy says:

#17 – Savvy! Yes! You win the day.

  21. avatar hasnizzle~ says:

    Green19…
he’d probably disown his own flesh and blood if that happened!:)!

Anyone else in as much of a fog of disarray and disbelief as me? I still can’t believe…Streit, Okposo, Shremp (Not as long, I know…) then Tavares, now Wiz for 2???
All the while going 1-0-1 and scoring 5ppg’s and 10 overall in 2 games! Despite all my negativity about DP these guys are playing thier butts off! If they can have these types of efforts throughout the season, no matter who’s on the ice… then this is gonna be one freakin exciting season no matter what happens! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both games so far!

  22. avatar dynasty23x4 says:

anyway we can get a petition or something goin for this BS? ive never really thought there was bias suspensions until now. did he try to or hurt anyone besides that pu$$ averys ego?? if garth doesnt step up and complain id be more pissed at the isles than cambell. i guess when your the ugly step-sister you have no leverage. also after tavares was hurt gilles and konopka shouldve been over those boards immediately! gordon dropped the ball there. garth- dont do the same!

  23. avatar Andy says:

Got bumped. Make that #18 – Savvy, heh.

  24. avatar Jim says:

Avery made racist comments towards Ted Nolan and wasn’t suspended. Finally someone sticks up to the douchebag, insults him, and then HE gets the book thrown at him. Notice how it’s always Islanders players they make examples out of???? If I didn’t know any better I would say Glen Sather was giving um…you know….favors to Colin Campbell.

  25. avatar hasnizzle~ says:

    oye:
    bru-NO, that’s funny.
I feel for the guy though, he’s a great person as well as community figure etc…
just not quite what we want on the ice:(

  26. avatar Mike says:

Completely inconsistent rulings from Campbell. I think he is manic depressive. On the other hand (no pun intended) we’ve got to really like Wiz and his toughness. If I were Garth, while things are going good, try to lock him up for a few years.

  27. avatar PPUGS says:

Absurd….Nino gets slashed with intent to injury. Wiz doesnt touch the guy and he gets 2..all i can say is wow

  28. avatar Hkycoz says:

Cammilliar gets one game for injuring another player. And Wiz gets two games for making a “lewd gesture”. I am not defending his actions but, the disciplinary guidelines if any in the league are a joke. Cambell has shown time and time again he can not be impartial. Just imagine if he flipped the bird, he would have got suspended from the league.

  29. avatar Priest says:

One game too many I agree, but I don’t think it is worth getting too worked up about. There was a small part of me that was expecting 6 games to match Avery’s “SS” suspension, just so the league could say they were consistent (ignoring the fact they are two completely different events). So at least they are in the right ballpark, which isn’t always the case with Colin Campbell.

  30. avatar Mike says:

I don’t think they can re-up the Wiz until Jan 1st?

  31. avatar jeff says:

The Isles taking 3 of 4 points must have the league panicked that they can make the playoffs and they wouldn’t want that.

  32. avatar IsleofNJ says:

    Wiz,
Here’s some good advice…next time just slash at Avery’s head (like Camalleri did to Nino. You would’ve gotten 1 game less.
    Campbell is ridiculous !

  33. avatar Build the Buzz says:

Whatever. Campbell is bad for NHL

  34. avatar Scott S. from Long Beach says:

    Well done James (17)…

  35. avatar Donna says:

Completely ridiculous especially in light of one game suspension given for hit and slash on Nino. I guess in Colin’s world sticks and stones don’t hurt or do more harm than words (and gestures).
Gotta be glad Wiz didn’t get a 10 game suspension. Avery’s antics always make me laugh and now I’m a fan of Wiz for life, so there.

  36. avatar jon from nj says:

Hey, at least it wasn’t 25 games, like I expected Colin to give him. That would fit normally.

  37. avatar handy says:

probably won’t make me popular — but i think he should’ve gotten more. But before you kill me, I also think Cammalleri should have gotten alot more. I like Wiz’ attitude and I don’t care what he says on the ice, but the league can’t allow guys to make those kind of gestures when they are trying to market the league. But, it is worse for the league when guys swing sticks at 18 year old’s heads.

I would have given Wiz 5
    Camalleri 15

But, most of all, there should be some uniformity in these punishments so they are not so ridiculously arbitrary.

  38. avatar Nyrangersuck says:

1 game for the gesture. 1/2 game for being an Islander and 1/2 game for beating his beloved Rags….again. I don’t even blame Colon Campbell anymore, it’s that idiot bobblehead commissioner that keeps him around.

  39. avatar MJS says:

Can’t they just put in a set of guidelines for punishing people? Shucks, if Wiz was a 30 goal scorer he would have gotten a slap on the wrist.

  40. avatar EdTurner says:

How does the Wiz get anything? They should suspend Avery for 10. You know he caused it.

It’s always the retaliation that gets caught in this league.

  41. avatar kurvers28 says:

CB…I see Wisniewski accepted the suspension. Can you appeal in the NHL? Unlike other sports, you never see a player do it. Thanks.

  42. avatar Isles22Isles says:

So I see Campbell still has his head lodged up his Colon.

    How Do You Spell Inconsistent?!?

    N. o
    .
    H. ave
    .
    L. ogic
    .

  43. avatar MattyIsles331 says:

Campbell is a damn parasite. If I were in charge I would give the Wiz a warning and in private give him a slap on the back and tell him good job..bout time the leech avery gets a taste of his own poison… I can see Campbell’s next Islander suspension on grounds of spitting on the ice….absurd

  44. avatar UIF says:

Should have been a highly-publicized fine.

  45. avatar Gary says:

seems to be no consistantcy in these suspensions

  46. avatar Obs says:

Wiz took it like a pro. Colon is the real A-hole here.

  47. avatar isles732 says:

    I just don’t get it. @38, you’re too right

  48. avatar GD says:

bob mckenzie said the max they can be fined is 2500, so that idea of a big fine woudlnt work

  49. avatar JP in NJ says:

    Two days?

This is Avery we’re talking about.

The league should give Wiz a medal for not beating him to death.

  50. avatar RAGS says:

The fans were chanting Avery Sucks !!! The Wiz let him know what they were chanting. What’s wrong with that ?

  51. avatar doc says:

James: best post of the day.

  52. Well, Wisniewski knows now. Next time, the NHL wants him to shove a stick blade in Averys face, slash Averys leg, maybe boarding and knock his front teeth out, because none of those things are worthy of this kind of suspension. Obviously, the NHL believes gestures are many times worse than doing things that could seriously injure people. Sadly, at this point its only a matter of time before they are mic’ing up the ice and suspending guys if they say naughty words or say vulgar things to another player. Gestures, words, there really is no difference.

  53. Another example of Colin Cambell not having a clue. This is, in my opinion, absolutely ridiculous. There is Absolutely No Consistency at all in this stuff. When is someone going to wake up and fire this guy?

  54. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

This is preposterous! 2 games??? I say we all bombard Colin(another word for — hole)with emails about his biased verdict. I say Campbell should be suspended for a few months! From now on, when Colin watches video of an incident, the Jersey’s should be blacked out so he can not see what team it is. This guy is way too erratic, unbelievable!! Who is monitoring this Bozo???

  55. avatar MattyIsles331 says:

another thing….suspension doesn’t matter at this point. When Wiz comes back Saturday night, he will probably get the loudest ovation. He has become my new favorite player. I’m glad someone finally stood up to the worse than a pile of horse**** that ranks on a hot summers day whose name starts with A and ends with SSHOLE.

  56. avatar Steven says:

I’m not sure why Garry cannot see Colin is in over his head. NHL has a big problem when slashing at someone’s face gets less than a gesture. The NHL cannot be taken seriously with these types of decisions.

  57. avatar Silkshocker says:

The NHL is aware bad teams in baseball like the pirates n royals increase profits for the Yankees etc due to the Harlem globe trotter effect. The NHL needs teams like the isles to stay in last place. Better for business.

  58. avatar 2Bit says:

Most definitely 1 game too many. Total B.S.!

Would love to see Hamonic come up for the 2 games, but it’s got to go to Hillen. Please no Bruno!

  59. avatar southard says:

JOKE. ABSOLUTE JOKE. since when do you get suspended for talking trash at a rival player. especially for 2 games! i don’t care if there is tv cameras there, this is hockey people. hockey. come on!

  60. avatar 5fourFightin says:

Had Wiz just hauled off and socked Avery in the face he would have gotten 5 mins and a misconduct. Next time. Justice will be served.

  61. avatar 2Bit says:

Not to mention Niklas Hjalmarsson was suspended two games for his hit to the head from behind of Buffalo Sabres winger Jason Pominville.

Pominville sustained a concussion and a gash above his eye that required 7-8 stitches.

So, a hit to the head from behind with devastating affects gets the same suspension as an obscene gesture? Frakkin ridiculous!!!!!

  62. avatar Islanderfan19 says:

So wiz gets 2 games and so does Hjalmarsson for his vicious hit on Pominville that sent him off on a stretcher…In one case a persons feelings got hurt, and in the Pominville case he was physically injured and yet they get the same amount of suspension time? That is absolutely ridiculous

  63. avatar DavidNYC says:

This is such a joke! I assume the NHL wants to protect its image and be a good influence on kids. I get it but since I was 7, every hockey game I’ve attended in many cities has erupted at one time or another into “A##Hole” chats and other classy diddies. The NHL allows men to beat each other to a bloody pulp with their fists but yet they are still concerned with a lewd act caught on camera because it is not appropriate behavior for kids? Gimme a break. This is total BS in my opinion and makes the sport look laughable. I expected this out of left field decision but I felt a fine would have been just fine.

  64. avatar Michael Delman says:

Great, let’s see if we can’t lose a few more guys to start the season.

  65. avatar Gary9-19-22 says:

I expected nothing less from Colon…..

He hates the Isles and always tacks on extra games on our own.

What kind of management do we have.. Oh yeah… CRAPY!! Video shows that Avery did the same thing in pre-game videos. The botmh of them should get one game.

    colon is a d-che bag…. Now that’s funny!!!!

Btw.. James does have the best post of the day

  66. avatar ken says:

I cant wait til Hjamarlson who hit another player from behind and put him on a stretcher is suspended for the same amount of games as a trash talking player. trash talking w/ the biggest mouth/pest/disobedient player in the league.

  67. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

Two Games?!?!?! Is this league for real??? He got more games than Cammeleri!

Campbell played this one just right. This way the Isles have to go to war against the 2 most potent offenses in the world withour their top 2 defensemen. Nice Colon.

The more the Wiz topic got played the more ridiculous it got.

Listen … I’ve heard ten times worse sitting 10 rows up.

If the Wiz received even a 1 game suspension then they were equating that with an intent to injure like Cammaleri’s slash (not to mention other attempts). Obviously Campbell’s brain is still damaged from Clark Gillie’s beat down in the Finals in 82.

Is the NHL trying to define the moral boundries for fans by suspending a player for a lewd gesture, but allow fighting?

A Devil, Leaf and Flyer fan assured me it would be ridiculous to suspend for that. I told them they don’t know Colon like us Isles fans do.

After seeing it again his gesture wasn’t even emphatic like I’ve seen it in the past. It was very subtle … but us pervs figured it out. It even took a few seconds for it to register for me until I saw the name on the back of the jersey Wiz was gesturing too.

I think a slap on the wrist with a small fine should of been the Max. Then let everyone know that in the future even gestures like that will no longer be tolerated and will be accompanied by a 10 minute misconduct and 2 minute unsportsman like. Never a suspension. The Ref was right there when it happened, and even he had a grin on his face.

Wiz, his agent and Garth should appeal the suspension. None of this lay down and take it Bull that this club has been known to do.

  68. avatar Mike from VA says:

Goin to the islanders/caps game tomorrow and it feels like i’m going to a Sound Tigers game. I think a fine would of been sufficient, but i mean i can understand one game, but not two. Especially when Camilerri (slaughted spelling) only gets one for that ordeal. God i’m hoping its not a 8-0 blowout when the Sound Islanders show up.

  69. avatar GD says:

The National Hockey League has suspended Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson two games for his hit to the head from behind of Buffalo Sabres winger Jason Pominville during the Blackhawks 4-3 win on Monday

you asked, and you received… the SAME

  70. avatar Steve says:

coli went too far in suspending James for two. The expression didn’t warrant a suspension.

  71. avatar TomD 37 says:

No one has mentioned this yet. But, this “gesture” was done right in front of the ref. The referee being right in the middle of the heated battle with avery and wiz decided not to call a penalty. So, if the ref decided that he didn’t even deserve a 2 min. unsportsmanlike conduct (which is really all he deserved), how can Colin Campbell watching it on a TV screen say he deserves 2 games.

  72. avatar Gary says:

ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME??? Camilleri gets 1 game for almost breaking someones leg but someone makes a “gesture” and they get 2 games, campbell you really suck, you need to go!!

  73. avatar hasnizzle~ says:

for those who might enjoy, here are some of my favorite comments about the wiz incident from today:

Wow. The NHL has a lot of BALLS giving that DEEP of a suspension.

1 game for every three pumps?

Matt Cooke didn’t get a suspension for a hit to the head of Marc Savard, but Wiz gets 2 games for showing Avery how to suck on a hog. Classic NHL!

AND MY FAVORITE…So whats that then,
2 games for Holding The Stick?

An old pointblank piece on Avery for perspective, hope u don’t mind the link Mr. Botta

    http://www.islanderspointblank.com/2008/12/when-avery-attacks-confrontation-with-snow-racial-taunts-at-nolan-showed-the-dark-side/

  74. avatar Lance79 says:

Two games is perfectly fine for Wiz IF Cammalleri had gotten the right suspension (IMO 5 games). Someone has got to make Bettman lay down the law and pass a set of guidelines. Going on precedent has been punishment via a combination of dartboard, hopskotch and the ghost of Miss Cleo.

Can we start a “Campbell must go” chant leaguewide and take credit? We can’t be the only ones confused if not outrightly flustered.

  75. avatar MattyIsles331 says:

If you look at it this way….both Hjalmarsson and Wisniewski were suspended two games for head shots. =P

  76. avatar Dinerboss says:

I’m outraged by this decision, but on the bright side atleast it’s against 2 teams on the road that we were not going to win,now if it were against teams not as strong it be worse! I think these next 2 games wiill tell where we stand as to what kind of team we have. Let’s hope we play a boring defensive trap type of game, maybe we’d be able to steal a point on the road.

  77. avatar steven says:

    James #17 – You’ll make a fortune on Shake A Weight Avery posters -

  78. colin campbell is like a hare brained grade school administrator attempting to maintain some sense of dignity while manning a position he should have been removed from years ago for the benefit of the sport. more people in the media need to outrightly bash him for being so terrible at his job. how ridiculous.

  79. avatar MattyIsles331 says:

James #17, I think you just provided us fans with a bag of new chants.

whos up for startin “Shake a weight avery shake a weight” next islander vs “the Manhattan sewer rat rejects” game

  80. avatar Kevvy says:

For all the bashing we have done on Milbury, there is one thing for sure. He would say something strong to the press about how nonsensical this is. Stand up for Wiz Garth, this is complete BS. Colin is the hole that a colon is connected to. In response to my anti-Rangers sign last year, Brandon Dubinsky said to me what Wiz was allegedly demonstrating during warm-ups. If I got that on video, is he out for two games?

  81. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

CB … You definitely need to score a candid Fanhouse interview with Bettman and Campbell regarding their uhhh … arbitrary way of dealing with suplimental discipline. Ridiculous.

BTW … What’s the # for NHL customer service?

  82. avatar Blizzard says:

…anyone who does not acknowledge CC’s bias against the Islanders after this is gutless. Thats right GUTLESS!!!!

  83. avatar 19inarow says:

Should have been one game but it did warrant a suspension, that does not change the fact that wiz is now one of my favorite Islanders, and I hope he signs an extension in Jan. Anyone who jumps into the rivalry with that much enthusiasm is ok in my book!

  84. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

Streit, Okposo, Tavares, Wisniewski, Schremp…why does it always seem like the Isles are always fighting an uphill battle? Who plays the point on the power play Wednesday..Weight and Hillen or Mottau?

  85. avatar The Cavster says:

Here’s to collie campbell….sucking my dick!

  86. I definitely don’t want to miss Wiz for 2 games, let alone 1…but having this done towards Avery is just hysterical. This is definitely one of the funniest/strangest moments in Isles history. Let’s go Jack Hillen…earn your spot and never give it up!

  87. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

I think BD should get to work on his photo shop and run with Jame’s idea … Avery with the Shake A Weight… Hilarious.

MattyIsles331 … That was soooo wrong … but since it was funny. I’ll let that go. LOL!

Who knows how to start those electronic petitions? We should start one to have the NHL fire Campbell. I’m sure we’d get support from 90% of the league’s fans. If anything it will make a statement. Just need to list his missjudgements with lack of discipline and his excess discipline. It can be titled. Gross Missjudgement!!

  88. avatar JS43 says:

Typical Colin Campbell nonsense…he will always come down hard on the Islanders…any time he has an opportunity…he is going to capitalize on it…I am surprised it was not for 10 games!!!Oh by the way Hillen not Bruno.

  89. avatar Cold Spring Harbor says:

Avery’s therapist thinks two games is fair.

  90. avatar Austin says:

I’ll pile on…two is ridiculous. I thought the gesture was appropriate considering it was aimed at Avery. NHL is arbitrary at best w/discipline…Campbell must thank all that is holy every night for even having a job.

  91. avatar hathead68 says:

    Campbell is a tool.

  92. avatar ny711ot says:

You are at a 1pm game on a holiday with your 6 and 8 year old. You advise them to keep their eye on #20 the newly acquired tough d man from the west coast. A few minutes later your 6 year old is tugging your arm, daddy why would avery care that wisniewski likes lollipops? Why is he doing that????sorry guys…I love the way he’s playing but the Wiz is lucky he got only 2. Regardless of the other ridiculous Campbell penalties this is something that needs extra punishment especially because of the time in which it occured. I have been watching hockey for 40 yrs. I have never seen anything like that. Regardless of the corroded piece of cr#p he was saying it to. It was a classless stupid display.

  93. avatar ts22 says:

everyone should email the NHL and complain about “Colon’s” obvious bias.
Is it true Avery made the same gesture during pregame?
“shake a weight Avery shake weight” should be mandatory at every Rags game, kind of like the rag morons Potvin s..ks.

  94. avatar Jim Clark says:

Should have been one game but I preserve my sanity by not trying to figure out how CC mind works. At least it gets the great Bruno Gervais in thelineup.

  95. avatar Michael says:

Such BS! Maybe they should clean up all the cursing too. What if the glass wasn’t there and we heard all of the yapping. Would that have to be penalized. Give me a break, let them play the game. Let someone beat the pulp out of Avery and not give them an instigator penalty. That would stop Avery and his antics. If Avery played in the 80′s era he would have no teeth, McSorley, Gilles, Semenko, Probert, etc would have demolished him.

  96. avatar Julie says:

I guess the Wiz would have been better off swinging his stick at Avery’s head and then at his ankles. Oh wait… he’s on the Islanders…never mind.

  97. avatar anthony c says:

once again colin campbell proves how much of an idiot he is. hahaha post #74 that was genius. kudos to you sir.

  98. avatar dose says:

if campbell didn’t have it in for the islanders initially, he definitely does now. acts of violence – some premeditated and that could rip guys eyeballs out – get one game, or even go unpunished. this nonsense by ‘the wiz’ – sophomoric and crude as it may be – is replicated every day by ten-year-old kids in every schoohouse across america, and this is what campbell cracks down on? what happened to his criteria of whether an injury occurred? what, did avery-the-rat’s feelings get hurt real bad? campbell is a fraud and an imbecile. that bettman (and/or the league) keeps him on is bizarre and an embarassment. just like how the creep who owns the garden and it’s 2 big tenants always keeps his failed stooges on. sheesh.

  99. avatar BringBackNyles says:

Timing is everything..the commish was in the building, during a matinee on a school holiday.

  100. avatar JJ says:

Wow! Once again, an Islander gets the worst possible punishment.

How is this different than Boynton’s throat slash gesture? And that got 1 game??

    Doesn’t make sense.

  101. avatar kurvers28 says:

ny711ot…..Please. I’m sure a lot of 6 and 8 year olds are watching the game so intently that they would notice that gesture. If they did, then you say exactly what you just said, Avery likes lollipops. He did not deserve a suspension. This is sports. Wisniewski will be a cult hero around here.

  102. avatar Austin says:

Sorry ny711ot, but you don’t go to a hockey game to teach your kids about appropriate behavior. Think about it…grown men getting into fights over a game and getting paid to do so. Without the internet, this basically stays on the ice and no one is the wiser.

  103. Hjalmarsson’s hit on Pominville which resulted in Pominville leaving the ice via stretcher is equal to a lewd gesture. How’s that for the NHL doesn’t treat certain teams (like the Isles) with excess bias.

  104. avatar tbox says:

This is complete and total B.S. Clearly giving concussions is just as bad as a harmless, but classless, taunt.

Hjalmarsson gets the same suspension for giving Pomminvile a concussion with a hit from behind.

    That doesn’t register. At all.

  105. avatar Devon says:

If I’m the Isles, I trade for Gregory Campbell, and stash him in the ECHL as punishment.

  106. avatar hockeytime says:

CC is the biggest joke. I need to find his phone number so I can prank him repeatedly. A player can make a throat slash jesture and MC can spear and slash yet this gets 2 games. At least be consistent and I don’t think too many people would have a problem. Campbell sucks it..plain and simple.

  107. avatar Steven says:

I agree that suspensions are wildly inconsistent. Hell, I’m still mad about Hunter’s suspension. Probably didn’t help that Wiz already has a rep in the league and has been suspended before.

  108. avatar cgs878 says:

That’s re-fracking-dick-ulous… but then Mr. Campbell is a wuss who hates the Islanders.

  109. avatar Mario says:

BS is all you can say. Wiz just became a hero in my eyes. Next time just kick his A*S!! Why dont we just get Yabo in there next game and have him destroy Avery. And NY711ot, hope your boys werent watching the pregame and saw all the crap that happened then. My 6 yr old is ready to go to an Isles Rags game but there is no chance he goes to that game. Every other word is a swear word. You should be penalized for bringing your kids to that game knowing the atmosphere. Sorry but true.

  110. avatar Bill says:

I agree with Botta’s main point that it is absurd to give Wiz 2 games for what he did and only give Cammy one for what he did. You can add two games for what Jovo did last year.

The only thing I would add is that, while I don’t approve of what Wiz did, you can bet that Avery was making equally lewd comments all night long. I am just wondering what the Islanders organization ever did to Coli to make him treat the team like dog excrement so often.

  111. avatar hollywood says:

What a joke!!!!! Typical NHL. Oh well time to move on!

  112. avatar doc says:

I’d be more concerned about subjecting my 6 and 8 year olds to the F-Bombs and the “you suck” chants as well as the near fights in the stands vs. a gesture that probably wasn’t well visualized by those from their seats.

  113. avatar Frank nyc says:

    BS.

  114. avatar JD says:

Typical hypocritical NHL. Cammy gets a game, Matt Cooke gets nothing, Mike
Richards gets nothing either, and the guy on the Hawks gets the same as the Wiz. The NHL is probably the only sports league that always seems clueless on how to enforce its own rules.

  115. avatar James says:

The Wiz gets the same amount of games that Kjalmarsson did for the hit on Pominville last night

Are you serious? Colin you are a joke

  116. avatar jonsson3 says:

We play them 5 more times. Take note Gillies, Konopka. Look for #16 and end it!

  117. avatar robert says:

two lowlife p.o.s.like avery and isles hater former rag campell flock together. what did you expect?

  118. avatar doublechili says:

Suspension handed down by as guy named Colon.
Name says it all. (taking liberty with the spelling, i know…)

  119. avatar justin says:

If the tv camera did not catch it there would have been no suspension, but it did.

  120. avatar cm2747 says:

this is redicoulous-time after time-how do the isles brass fight something like this, something has to be done-what a joke this is becomming…beginning to dislike colon cambaell as much as avery

  121. avatar Chris says:

Players get off with nothing for intentionally hurting other players, yet a 2 game suspension for a harmless gesture? This is absolutely disgusting and its no wonder why hockey is no longer considered a major sport in the US.

  122. avatar DD says:

This seems like more of a freedom of speech issue to me. As such, what gives Colin Campbell the right or the power to punish any person for saying something to another? Because thats what Wiz did, he basically just told Avery something. There was no hockey being played at the time…..I don’t know, this makes no sense to me. Where does it say Colin Campbell can punish another person for saying something?? This is against our basic freedom.

  123. avatar Frustrated Voter says:

Hey Bettman, with continued idiotic rulings like these, the NHL is starting to stand for the No Hope League. Complete travesty!

  124. avatar MAD FAN says:

    Hillen please!!!

  125. avatar Al R. says:

Why didn’t ” the colon” discipline Tortorella for his comments about the officiating that were published today. If Garth or Gordon said those things the Isles would pay the price.

  126. avatar IslesinOside says:

Cmon boys will be boys. If there were no fights, no gestures, no cursing and no contact it would be called Barbie Dolls (OR MAYBE GOLF) not Hockey. Get bent Campbell!

  127. avatar isles316 says:

I’ll be in the minority here, but Wisniewski didn’t get enough. Not only did he insult Avery, but he insulted every homosexual male. Any homosexual NHL fan who sees that (and im sure there are plenty) will again see someone degrade their man hood by making a gesture that was supposed to question Avery’s manhood. I have friends who have told me when they were teenagers how hard it was to live and feeling uncomfortable being who they are. Stuff like that is a big reason why. The Wiz acted like an idiot in my humble opinion.

  128. avatar streit02 says:

Matthew Barnaby said it best (tsn.ca). Like I said earlier, b/c it was caught on TV the league would suspend him. The fact that it was 2 games is absolutely ridiculous. It’s easy for every other fan to overlook it as a non-issue, but as an islander fan, and with the crap that other teams get away with on us, it makes you think at what point will or can something be done. Im the last one to complain about someone being bias, but enough is enough. This is getting ridiculous, this is supposed to be a professional league. Does 2 games really send a bigger message to players?? When every other player gets 1 game for death threats and intent to injure??? Please, all this does is furhter cripple the Isles.

  129. avatar isles316 says:

I also completely agree with many of how guys get seriously injured and get handed down the same punishment. Campbell is pathetic but I still think Wisniewski was an idiot yesterday.

  130. avatar DLR says:

Yes, the suspension is dumb. But, letting Avery con you in to acting like a grade scholl dik wad is equally pathetic. Again, Avery wins.

  131. avatar brooklyn george says:

When I saw the video I died laughing. To funny. Big deal. 2 game suspension for that. The Isles need to do something about this cause they will always be Colon’s target. Put a stop to this now Garth.

  132. He could NEVER beat us on the ice so this is his only pay back… He and Bettman have kept this game in the dark ages while the other major sports are part of American culture.Any other MSG relics around to destroy the game further?

  133. avatar D in BIG D says:

#92 are you kidding me.I’ve been watching games for 30+yrs,so what? What do you tell your kids when a player gets the crap kicked out of him, blood is everywhere, everyone in the stands are yelling, screaming and cursing. Not saying I don’t see your point of view but c’mon its an isolated 1 time incident.Oh by the way what did Essa Tikkanen ever get for blowing that kiss at another player during a game and yes it was caught on live tv?!I believe everyone just laughed about it and moved on.If I where Wiz I’d use that as my measuring stick and threaten a personal lawsuit against the league and their hand picked idiot Cambell.I think a public apology to fans and there kids would’ve been just fine.No suspension necessary.Go Isles.

  134. avatar therain93-terriers fan says:

The Islanders rule of 2 rings true again. An Islander commits a penalty, +2 game suspension; An opponent commits a penalty against the Islanders, -2 games suspension.

  135. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

Ny 711–What you tell your kids is that during a hockey game, sometimes guys tease each other to get under their opponents skin. Now let me ask you, what do you tell them when someone takes a stick with both hands, chases him down, and attempts to take his head off? Seriously…it saddens me the things that we are so uncomfortable explaining!

  136. avatar geduffer says:

Guys, Zenon and Trevor wouldn’t be able to drop them with Avery. Little Seanie’s history is that he gets you ticked off and then goes and hides behind Boogaard’sskirt (or Orr’s or whatever goon they’re dressing at the time). Let’s bring Yabo up and have him go MMA all over Avery.

  137. avatar bionicman99 says:

Campbell needs to step down. He must have a wheel that he spins any time there is a call for discipline. He spun it for Wiz and it landed on “2 Games.” Simply comical.

  138. avatar Jerky says:

Perplexing to say the least. It’s going to take a player becoming paralyzed for life or killed before the league wises up and implements a standard unbiased system for discipline. Oh wait, we already had the Bertuzzi-Moore incident and nothing changed. Never mind.

  139. avatar Rob Cush says:

Absolute joke, The Wiz is getting a standing ovation from me Saturday night. What Cammaleri did was easily a 3 game suspension IMO. Oh well, my next jersey will say Wisniewski on the back.

  140. avatar Hoser14 says:

Lets see, two refs and no penalties? Two games? Ranger$ butt-buddy Colon Campbell sticks it to the Isles once again. At least it wasn’t 5 games….

The next time the miscreant gives our goalie a snow cone special, give him five fingers instead of the one!

  141. avatar rpchief2 says:

I don’t understand, when some of you think the suspension was two much. It wasn’t a violent act against avery, but very uncalled for. THere was a couple of comments of I’ve seen worse. Where in the sporting word have you seen something like that. Try expalining that to your seven year old, after you spend two days telling him that Wis is going to be a great addition to the team.

  142. avatar Michael says:

New Islander t.v. rules. (Jaffe rules) All close-ups of Islander players and staff will now be out of focus. Color commentators also must have all words cleared with management before saying them.

  143. avatar Sidd Finch says:

The bottom line on this is that the Isles should load up for the Montreal game and beat the living snot out of Cammalieri and all comers. That will send a message to the NHL to get their f’ing act together. I don’t understand how the league is more concerned about an image it tarnishes by making these unbbelievable calls. I still don’t understand why he doesn’t appeal. COLON CAMPBELL MUST GO!!!

  144. avatar Dadi says:

Two games? Nevermind…Wiz is a legend now!

  145. avatar Giaco says:

Is he allowed to appeal? should get it down to 1.

  146. avatar mtrico says:

Campbell continues to show time and time again that he is in way over his head and is simply not capable of doling out punishment fairly or consistently.

  147. avatar Ct 1970s says:

Between bettman and minion cc, its the “whose on first” show. Bushleague to the extreme. One slash one game, one concussion no games, gesture by an Islander, two games. Even avery is laughing at the league.

  148. avatar Tom:NJ shore says:

Once a Rag always a Rag. If I were Wang I would ask for a person who has no past with NHL ties to be put in this position.

  149. avatar Kaszycki's Krew says:

I saw Donald Brashear give an equally vulgar sign – that went unpenalized – at Brendan Witt at NVMC a few years back…. (describing woman – insinuating that Witt was afraid to fight him )

Personally – I think Avery should have been suspended two games – because he is Avery and a Rag.

  150. avatar Steve says:

Ridiculous ruling. Campbell sucks. All any fan wants is fair.

  151. avatar Eric Cup says:

No problem with this. He deserved the 2 games. Obscene gestures are always treated harshly and they should be.

  152. avatar orngfan says:

colin campbell still thinks he’s coaching the ranger$ thats how he got that 2nd game!!

  153. avatar bcarey says:

It was pretty obscene, albeit hilarious. The problem is that it was immediately an Internet meme. Deadspin, ESPN, blogs, message boards. So Wiz was at the mercy of his own popularity here. I actually laughed when I first heard, because all of us in the Country knew it would be more than a game. That being said, he kind of deserved it based on the simple fact that you can’t do that crap on live television in a professional sports uniform. Even if it is Sean Avery. If he did it to Ovechkin he’d be on a cargo plane to Siberia right now.
