ANAHEIM 1 ISLANDERS 0
Eighth loss in a row; PB call-in show debuts
The Ducks played an overtime game in San Jose on Tuesday and had little against the Islanders – 14 shots on goal – but still managed to win. Anaheim started backup goalie Curtis McElhinney, who made 27 saves for the shutout, but none where he had to break a sweat. Despite Scott Gordon’s urging at practice this week, his players are still not going hard enough to the net.
The Islanders were 0-6 on the power play. Radek Martinek engaged in his first NHL fight. Matt Martin hit a lot of opponents. Zenon Konopka got a five-minute misconduct and a game misconduct for getting into it verbally with Saku Koivu. PA Parenteau and Doug Weight did not record a shot on goal. Rob Schremp and Trevor Gillies were healthy scratches.
Out of a possible 16 points, the Islanders have earned zero in the standings over the last eight games. At 4-9-2 and with ten points after 15 games, the Islanders are tied with New Jersey and Edmonton for last place in the NHL. The last time the Islanders had a lead in a game was 21 days ago.

To the readers who think my post from last night was some sort of hissy fit because Garth Snow turned down an interview request, I would like to respectfully recommend that you might want to turn elsewhere for your Islanders reading. To the best of my knowledge, my column about the Islanders’ failure to improve their offensive attack only had accurate facts and statistical information.
I wrote two stories on Tuesday. One was a positive article about the locker room not splintering. The other was a statistically-driven piece about the Islanders having a -15 goal differential, which is 29th in the league. The Islanders were coming off seven losses in a row, going on eight.
If you think that column was a reaction to Garth turning down my interview request last weekend – we have not spoken on the record in over a year, so this is not new news (all I can do is make the request when necessary) – you might want to consider looking away for a little while. This has been a tough stretch for the team. It won’t all be sunshine.

“Islanders Interactive”: So we tried this SNY/Islanders Point Blank reader call-in show today, and everyone – except two fans – wanted to discuss Rick DiPietro. I still believe it turned out pretty well. Thank you to Brian Compton of nhl.com for joining me in studio, Jeff Goldman, Jason Petere and the great crew at SNY and especially the fans for calling in. We’ll aim for more of a variety of calls and a longer segment next time!
Comments on this post and Wednesday’s game are welcomed..

Good stuff CB and BC. Wish I could’ve called in at that time, had a non-DP question.
Keep it up guys!
-
Nice job guys. Thanks for doing it!
-
Good job, Botta. That was great to get Brian Compton to sit in. He knows his stuff. Hopefully next time Islanders fans take advantage and don’t just ask about DiPietro so we can have more of these shows and longer segments too. This was a great start. Does any place else even talk or report on this team anymore with any jam? Without this site we have nothing.
-
Botta: you’re dedication to delivering the best and most professional news stories to a hungry fan base is unprecedented. Thanks for doing things like this. Keep it going!
-
Very informative. You were informative and natural, Chris. Like hanging out with your buddies over a beer, only you actually know what you’re talking about. And I second the vote for you replacing Francesa….”you only say things once. Once is all you need to make a point, you don’t need to say it more than once. You really do.”
-
Very poised performance from both of you and good calls.
I look forward to future installments.
Maybe you can read email questions as well, or allow people to record and send questions as MP3 files, to encourage more participation. -
That was entertaining. 9 more minutes of Islanders talk than we get anywhere else. My favorite part was when Botta implied there’s more to the DiPietro stuff than any of us knows. I think you know something, CB. You don’t have to be a hockey coach to know DiPietro is not moving well side-to-side. I wonder if he’s having health problems.
Anyway, good work by Botta and Compton. I’ll be back to chat during the first period. And happy birthday, CB.
-
That was great. Please, please, please do it again!
-
Thumbs up!!! Can’t get enough of this stuff. Just wish we had better news to talk about. Maybe soon we will.
-
Chris, on behalf of the fans, thank you for bringing us out of the dark. Youre segments/articles have become the only qaulity thing about this franchise we can enjoy. Point Blank has come along way! (maybe you can somehow get rich off this and then you can buy the franchise!)
-
Nice job CB. Do all the DP haters think hes not the one scoring? Was he the one who “focused on 2 pts” and didnt avenge the Flyers transgressions and still lost the game? True, hes useless like Pluto but this is a Mickey Mouse organization.
-
Congrats Chris!! First Happy Birthday and Thank You for putting something Islanders out here, keep the show coming and once again Best of Luck on the show!!
-
“Everything that isn’t good about it is on me, but please check it out anyway.”
I thought it was very well done. Very smooth, very professional. The thing about DP questions is, Islander fans have a lot of them. You did a great job of answering them.
I like your take on Sim too. Keep up the good work and don’t sell yourself short.
-
Man I feel like a dick now for calling in with a DP question, I didn’t get through but I still would like to state my point.
First of all, Islander nation is battered and bruised but we are certainly not down. We all need to realize this is a five year rebuilding plan and it isn’t always going to be pretty. We need to take a page from John Stewart and restore some sanity.
In line with restoring sanity, the worst possible thing that could happen to the Islanders right now is the firing of Scott Gordon (a possibility?!?!) or Garth Snow (not going to happen). Consistency is probably the most underrated asset in a sports franchise. I feel the Islanders are just starting, I REPEAT just starting to get their legs under them after a decade of bad decision. We are running the TB Rays model here, lets not pull the carpet out with letting a coach go mid-season.
Ok this brings us lastly to DP. We now sit in year three of Garth’s rebuilding plan. Yashin is our highest paid player but at least we as a fan base don’t have to look at him as a reminder of past HORRIBLE GM moves. This is exactly what DP is, a horrible reminder of bad times, I want to see him find success, again I want him to find success!
So my question, how long? How many more 5+ goal games till DP is hitting the road. And does that road lead to the AHL or a buy out? Thoughts?
Thanks Chris and Brian for a great segment, you guys got me excited for the goalie prospects. Apologies for the DP question
LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!
-
Can someone please explain to me what the hell a mickey mouse organization is? Great job on this CB as usual. Thanks for all you do.
-
You answer 3 questions about DiPietro and then you end the blog with the good news, Roloson starts tonight!
-
Rob (#15),
From wikipedia, “…..the Devils were publicly humiliated by Wayne Gretzky after they were blown out 13–4 by his team, the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky was upset that former teammate Ron Low played for what he considered an inferior team, and in a post-game interview said:“ Well, it’s time they got their act together, folks. They’re ruining the whole league. They had better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on ice.[14] ”
Later, Gretzky publicly admitted that his comment went too far, but privately maintained that his comment was accurate.[15] In response, many Devils fans wore Mickey Mouse apparel when the Oilers returned to New Jersey.”
-
Is Dipietro hurt yet?
-
CB- you are selling yourself short. Your first interactive call-in show was well done, keep them coming!
-
The show was entertaining and that is really what counts! You and Brian seemed to me disagreed about one aspect of DP and again that is what makes a show interesting. My read was from you was that DP was a good guy ,was working hard to come back, but that the jury was out and we would know more as the season progressed, including perhaps time in Bridge. On the other hand, Brian seemed confident that DP would come all the way back and the question was really how long it would take. If I were a betting man I would say we will see someone from Bridge by January, I only hope it is not because of injury to either of our goalies.
-
CB, this is great! I’m glad you partnered with SNY. You make their blog network quite formidable.
-
Chris, If you only knew how much I appreciate you! I would have loved to call in but I had to work. The segment was awesome, please—keep them coming!
-
Brian Compton was great. Reminds me of his father, who covered the Islanders foer the Daily News back in the glory days.
-
A couple of years ago I would have been very excited abut your new show. Your last post is the perfect argument for why I’m not. Wang and Snow have no desire to put an NHL product on the ice. I can no longer tolerate spending my time and money to watch an AHL team compete in the NHL. The only blessing our anemic offense provides is that we don’t have to listen to that stupid goal song they decided on.
I’m ordering the NHL Center Ice package and looking forward to watching some real, quality hockey. Maybe if I was young enough to have no memory of the Torrey and Arbour days, this wouldn’t be so sad!
-
go compton
-
Great job as usual, CB (and company)! Very entertaining. Lots of venom toward Snow right now, a lot of which I think is heightened by his lack of willingness to talk to the fans on this blog. But I would remind people that he took over the job with management experience of any kind. So the five years he’s been here represent the full extent of his experience in this business.
Given that, I think it’s fair to say that he’s done a fair job. Not great, but not terrible either. And on a lot of his most important decisions (the Bailey and Nino picks being at the top of the list), it’s still way too early to pass judgement. I know we’re all tired of waiting, but we can’t hold Snow responsible for the two decades of futility prior to his arrival. And we can’t over-react to the fact that he won’t talk to CB. Least that’s my two cents.
-
Great video Chris. Really wish you had a better team to report on. Always talking about what is wrong with this team is depressing for the fans and can’t be much fun for you. Do you ever wonder what would have happened if Ryan Smyth stayed?
-
Well Produced. I’m So Happy We Have This Website. This Might Be The Only Thing That Keeps Us Islander Fans In Check.
Of Course As You Said At The End Botta, Most Questions Would Be About DP, SIM and Losing Streaks, haha. Unfortunately I disagree with your buddy’s statement. DP will not be playing much longer. Garth and Co. know the fans can’t take much more of this nonsense. DP knows he’s struggling and the team does not want to play for him. There’s a significant difference of confidence visible when DP and Roloson are in net. Hence — why Rolo is starting tonight to help get us out of the slump.
-
Another wonderful feature – thanks for all your great efforts, CB.
-
We are our worst critics. I think you and Brian both did a great job. Thanks for making the coverage on what is already the best source for Islanders news even better!
-
Very cool segment. Looking forward to seeing more in the future!
-
Nice job CB! Wish it could had been a half-hour show! Wish we could talk trades. All fans should stop going to games and force Wang or Snow to do something. Show us they care.
-
CB,
I love the video’s, keep them coming and the interactive part is great for us fans!! Was it just me or was the just askin’ area a knock on Snow? Still upset at the turn down for the interview?
You two should have an SNY sit down session it would be the best show ever! Have it moderated by Stan Fischler.
-
Love it!!!Need better questions though. We already know about DP and who cares about Sim?
-
Nice job Chris. This site is about the most credible thing associated with the franchise these days.
-
Great job Mr. Compton your knowledge of the Islander’s made it a plus to the show. NHL.com is a very lucky organization having your professionalism & knowledge. Hope to see you again on SNY.
-
“Thanks Islanders fans…” that’s what Mr. Wang should be saying at the turnstiles during each home game.
-
Great segment Chris. Nice to hear some intelligence discussing the team without comments coming from behind the Orange and Blue veil. Keep up the good work.
-
CB, all I can say is, Why only 8 minutes. You could probably do an hour. Keep it up. One thing CB, POULIN is the future. Write it down.
-
Chris – This was absolutly awesome stuff and I look forward to another one. I would love to see you guys do 30 minutes to get more calls with more variety. Glad to see someone is getting the Islanders some media attention, this fan base is a sleeping giant and are just dying for a good team again.
-
Chris,
Thanks for taking my call. Sorry about the DP question but truthfully, IMO, it is the most important topic about the Islanders right now. Great job with the show. Can’t wait for the next one. I promise that I’ll go with a different topic next time. The Isles have plenty of items to delve into! -
Hello fellow disgruntled fans!
-
“This team needs to get emotional” … yea! YA THINK!!!
-
Who is this new guy Sim they brought up from the minors, is he a rookie?
HA
-
Thanks CB for doing this. We dont always agree but you by far work harder and care more than any media outlet to give islanders fans honest news. Thanks
-
Good evening. I’m interested to see how Bailey does back at center–maybe it will re-start something for him.
-
Forget about a win, how about at least getting a lead in tonight’s game?
Gordon is going with the goaslie with the worse won-loss-loser’s point record.
-
The arena is empty.
Looks like 4,000 in attendance -
CB, is the audio on your tv crackling like mine is?
-
Am I the only one that noticed or see, that during the first eight games the team was getting their shots actually on goal, and in the losing streak they take a ridiculous number of shots that completely miss the net?
-
Good evening CB and fellow IPBers,
I know alot’s being said about the current losing streak, but can anything be said about their opponents?
The Isles always have trouble against the Panthers.
We had 2 against the Habs where Plekanac owns us. 2 against the Flyers, which were obvious losses. The Canes are a team that we play OK. Then the Sens who always play us well. What do you think? -
Question,
How come Marty doesn’t wear an A? He’s been our best player this season and one of our leaders.
-
Loving the beastly play by Josh Bailey on that last shift.
-
CB, hope you had a piece of birthday cake for me. These west coast trips are killer for those who wake up early but if they win it makes it a little easier to handle.
-
(55) at least they are shooting the puck, even though they miss the net most of the time.
-
Get to watch a rare West Coaster, with schools closed tomorrow.
-
So much for that “automatic” penalty call for a parallel stick on that Bailey play.
-
for a team who cant get a lead they could shoot a little more often
-
Happy Birthday CB.
-
What’s everyones thoughts on weight? He doesn’t even appear to be an average player this year
-
Hey CB – thanks for this…any update on Andrew McDonald? Is he going to be on the early side of his recovery?
-
I read an article by Larry Brook of the post the other day that said there is an arena in Queens waiting for Wang if he wants it. Is that really true?
-
@JoeConte
I thought he looked OK the first game or two then got real slow real quick. He usually has one great burst of energy a game, then gone.
-
Bailey looks motivated.
-
Hey Chris.
I know you previously held off on giving your opinion on Butch in his new role. When can we expect your take on that?
-
I think that Queens will be the eventual home of the Islanders, ironically enough, Nassau has had their chance, and basically said, nope.
-
I’m curious on every ones opinion. Who do you think is the most physical player on the team (checking, not fighting)?
From what I read about before he got here, I thought it would be Konopka, but I really don’t see it. -
Guy in front, shot nowhere near the net.
-
I’ll never forget when Radek was named one of the stars of the game for the first time. He didn’t know what to do, and skated an entire victory lap around the Coliseum ice.
-
CB,
Just trying to get a convo going. Here’s another:
Who’s the last Isle with Wheels like Grabner? -
Is Roloson in goal or Rico…after that moment, I can’t tell.
-
Roloson got lucky there.
-
Why is Gillies scratched? Is it because he is a team player? So sick of this team. The fans here are so loyal and the management and coaching staff is so pathetic. Glad to see Hunter is in(Very Sarcastic)
-
Interesting note: the Ducks’ play-by-play guys (game’s on NHL Net) spend just about every opportunity talking about the skill and talent on the Isles squad. Individual and team-wide. West coast respect? Or is it that we almost never play the Ducks (heh).
-
if Queens did build an arena, wouldn’t they have to get other events besides 40 hockey games (plus playoffs)? Are there enough events such as concerts and conventions to compete with MSG, Prudential, Nets arena, even NCVMC?
-
I do admit, they have (on all sides, Queens & Isles) done a good job of keeping things close to the vest.
-
Love Rols quote on the team
-
I agree with you about Brooks. Sad to say that he has become a caricature of himself. His articles that are relevant are the exception now. Tough to read now
-
Is it true that the Ducks don’t have a shot yet? I’m out, checking the game on an online gamecast…is that a typo?
If its true, do we look as good as we should outshooting them 7-0?
-
I asked about Poulin and Koskinen…hope that doesn’t count as a DiPietro question!
-
thanks for the response and happy birthday CB
-
Hey is anyone else not from the Long Island area trying to find the game? It’s not on NHL Center Ice and it’s blacked out on nhl.com even though it’s not a national broadcast and I’m not in Anaheim. Any suggestions?
-
Parros there tough guy is playing. There is no excuse to scratch Gillies. Fire Gordon, or whoever made that decision
-
The announcers for the ducks are very complimentary to the Islanders. Very surprising considering it is not Butch lol
-
Okay, so I was all set to watch the Islanders/Ducks, THREE time zones away from Anaheim, tonight on NHL.com, thanks to my PAID subscription.
But, I am blacked out in Florida from watching it because it is being televised on a “National Network”.
HUH?? Whodat? NBC? Versus? Fox? ESPN???????
Nope….the “NHL Channel”.
Calling the NHL Channel a “National Network”" is like calling the Islanders a Stanley Cup Contender……..IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS.
Fire Bettman.
-
Jim, I am pretty sure that there would be plenty of events…college basketball, and I am sure they would take a lot of events from NVMC…especially since the access to the building would be so much better.
-
They are on west coast feed on direct TV. Channel 692 if that helps, but I am on the west coast so not sure if it is relevant
-
CB (91) was that the Rol quote? I thought I saw that somewhere
-
Man I hate Jon Sim ! Why can’t long term injuries happen to him ? He skates so hard LMAO !
-
Was that the Roli quote? Only one that gave you props was Jaffe. Hey, wait a second…would the org be that childish? hmm.
-
561, try channelsurfing.net
-
CB (91) – I knew that was your quote from Roloson and cracked up about the lack credit.
-
CB- What can the Islanders do to make the home game experience more enjoyable for the paying fans besides winning hockey? We all know winning will bring back the fans, but for the die-hards that go regardless of the teams record, it would be nice to start being entertained at these darn things, like I was 5-7 years ago! Thanks for everything and happy birthday
-
Hey CB. Just to continue the post from today, you seriously have done more for this franchise than Snow imo. Not to blow sunshine up your rear, but all of my friends read your site daily if not hourly. Otherwise I would have no info on what is going on. Did Snow always have the holier than thou attitude? Or did he just get the hall pass for life from Wang and can now act like an idiot every chance he gets?
-
By the way Chris, sorry about he DP question I knew I should have come up with something else. See rant (15) for further explanation
-
games on NHL network are usually blacked out from Game Center. No doubt Bettman does that so fans put pressure on cable/satellite companies to carry NHL network. But that’s hockey. Baseball introduces an ipad app for $12 that you can use your internet subscription to watch live games. Bettman introduces an app for $20 for radio only and later on will have an ipad app for $80. Proving lawyers like Bettman are greedier than car salesmen like Selig
-
The PP was awful in the first period
-
Jim of post 101. Right on the mark. Great post
-
This game is like watching west coast paint dry.
-
Wow, not losing after one. Not bad… I think the two hardest workers thus far are Bailey and Mottau.
-
Happy birthday CB!
-
Typical Isles period. Give up one shot, and dont take advantage of ours. This is setting up perfect for an Anaheim win. We let them off the hook. We always do.
-
#94 maybe you are right. But with a new arena in Brooklyn and the economy/poor state of municipal finances, I remain skeptical.
Maybe somebody with a better knowledge of NYC history can correct me but has there ever been a NYC mayor from Queens? Maybe the next one will be but I think that would hurt Queens chance of getting an arena. Plus does Wang want to build there? He always always said you just can’t renovate NCVMC, you need the Lighthouse project. Would he get to develop in Queens..or would the Wilpons, who need the money too?
-
Jim 101, I’ll tell ya, go up to the Centre Bell in Montreal, that’s what we need to do.
-
I’m glad Butchie thinks Weight looks great tonight.
-
Not sure what to make of their play in the first period. They appear to have outplayed Anaheim and yet I don’t think they looked very good.
CB, instead of my usual negative rants and questions, can you tell us the positive surprises on this team thus far from your perspective? What players have impressed you and where has the team improved from last season?
-
Islanders still can’t score! At least Bailey looks alive again. Please, please, please Scott Gordon, leave him at center!
-
thanks 99
-
Jim, part of my thoughts are based on every once in a while you hear how the Wilpons are always trying to expand around Taxpayer Field…oops, CitiField…and I know the city would be more than happy to put an end to the “Iron Triangle” surrounding the ball park.
-
Chris do Aaron Ness and Corey Trivino have futures in the Islanders organization? I get the feeling that they have fallen off the radar screen and are draft busts. I would also like your opinion regarding Calvin De Haan. They gave up Bushel full of 2 & 3 round draft picks (Landon Ferraro and Ryan O’Reilly could been chosen) and one of the experts in THN in his post draft analysis rated Chris Kreider the forward taken by the Rangers with the 18th pick of the 2009 as a better prospect than Calvin De Haan.
-
I really hate seeing Sim out there,I know we have bigger issues then him but just because he scores a hat trick with the bridge doesn’t mean he belongs up here and scratch Gillies.Wasn’t Tambellini a great ahl player.P.A stinks and Weight is done.Bailey looks great at center.Played a good period hopefully we could put one in at even strength.
-
I just don’t see how the Queens arena makes sense from a business perspective. If you have new arenas in Brooklyn, Queens, and Newark, plus the Coliseum, plus the Izod (Meadowlands) Center, with the Garden smack in the middle of all of it, how will any of them, aside from the Garden, turn a profit? Will all concerts play at each arena? I assume the Coliseum would be squeezed out, but still, it just seems like building in Queens won’t be the financial boon to Wang. Certainly would be great for us, but its relatively unrealistic. For the life of me, I cannot understand why we just don’t piggyback on the Brooklyn arena. It’s already being built, will be wildly successful, can still be retrofitted for hockey, and its smack in the middle of a ton of transportation options. Does it just make too much sense for the Islanders?
-
CB has there been any talks about an arena for the Islanders, or are we really going have to wait until 2015 for this issue to be resolved?
-
CB,
Great idea with the call-in show. Maybe more calls with shorter answers would work better in an 8 minute segment. Just a thought.
DC -
Anyone agree that the Bailey in chains commercial has to go?
-
(122) If Wang spent money on conditioning, the isles wouldn’t need chains. J/K.
Yeah, it needs to go. -
lets hope that Roli hasn’t gotten too cold during the first… Does that mean that we may see him against the Sharks too? I don’t remember Roli playing back to back for us except for a loss to the Rangers… we shall see. I guess it doesn’t matter when we make every opposing goalie look OUTSTANDING
-
Happy Birthday CB, your blog is one of the highlights of my day. 1st period was almost boring as a bunch of speedsters couldnt put a thing on net. Duck announcers are deff complimentary of the Isles and there speed, and talent…. Would be nice to show them both and score a few goals, preferable the ones that win the game for ROLI, especially after the announcers were saying he was cheating by knocking the net off and loosened his helmet straps ( freakin brillant) for play stopage. LETS GO ISLANDERS!!
-
My question to you is the following, years before Rickey was considered the face of the franchise. Now that he’s were he is and JT is with us, who is considered the face of the franchise? Is it JT, or another kid or is will the organization still trying to make Rickey the lead player?
-
Chris, as an invested, knowledgeable fan, what would you say is the next step to respectability? Is it the building, a tier 1 free agent, or something else? And will it happen while Wang owns the team?
-
Butchie just criticized Martinek’s awful drop pass error. Guess we won’t see him back next year.
-
Who really looks like the team that played last night now?
-
Maybe Wendy’s will change their chili promotion to one goal per game.
-
@124 agreed, Bailey in chains needs to go. Isles marketing department needs to be studied in schools as what not to do.
-
Inconsistent/Inept
Sad
Lazy
Aggravating
Nooooo……not again
Disappointing
Exasperating
Run-down
Soft -
Congrats to Rolli! There is an Islander capable
of putting a puck in the net 5-on-5. -
Obviously it’s early and we need a decade before we know for sure. But I wonder if Tavares will be more Billy Harris than Steven Stamkos. Good the first couple of years but never improve past that to a superstar.
-
Can they just go back to all wooden sticks already…I am so sick of the breaking sticks.
-
I like Bailey in chains..
-
this is not an nhl lineup
-
martinek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Nooooo, Marty, don’t!
-
win or loose way to go martinek. love zonopkas reaction
-
How can Martinek really fight Carter when the little girl wears a visor
-
So apparently Marty will stand up for himself but others won’t (Sim, Comeau, Okposo, Bailey, Hunter, etc). Good for Marty but let’s hope he doesn’t earn his annual injury this way. And he gets an extra penalty for what? Ridiculous.
-
Wow Carter what a tough guy, taking on big bad Martinek…Nhl refs are the worst. Carter instgated that and we get extra penalty.
-
Wasn’t exactly Gillies & O’Reilly was it?
-
Carter needs a punch in the face just for not taking off the visor/helmet
-
Word on Marty from the penalty box…out 5 months with a torn ligament in hand.
-
Tremendous kill for the Isles, and I have to say that this is a make up call for the extra two on Martinek.
-
NICE Julie (140) lol
-
I was expecting more from the ducks. I would kill to have any of Ryan, getzlaf or Perry on the isles. They look lethargic.
-
Why is Weight on the point for the PP? He’s horrible.
-
Jim Clark – Tavares has as many goals as Nash, Marleau, Alfredsson, Richards, Getzlaf, Perry, Staal, Heatley, Patrick Kane, among other talented NHLers. Where is this coming from that he’s somehow a bust?
-
Watching paint dry is more exciting than this. The Ducks must be tired from last night and the Islanders must be resting up for tomorrow’s game in San Jose.
-
Weight is awful, we need a real power play point man. where u at streit?
-
I get that okposo and streit are out but isn’t there someone besides Doug weight who can play the blue line on the pp?
-
Isles playing a very good road game.
-
Nights like this, I feel as though this rebuild hasn’t even reached the ground floor.
-
This team just refuses to score a goal. It’s just not our thing .
-
Seriously! I just popped in! Is this really an NHL game?
-
Good night and good luck…..
-
Good g-d…can the most exciting part of this game be a fight by Radek? Yikes…glad I’m somewhat missing it.
-
Can’t anyone on this team finish?
-
Martin will never see bridgeport again!! And the picture is gone!
-
Please send Doug Weight to the front office.
-
Geez, Cablevision… really??
-
Nothing like a still picture on my hi def TV. Thank you Mr. Dolan.
-
This is just brutal to watch, both teams seem clueless. No one crashes the net, no one can hit the net on a shot and no one wants to move on the PP. Good nite all.
-
Cablevison just took the Islanders off of MSG
-
On Time Warner, I have lost the game feed.
-
Radio on tv, wonderful
-
The broadcast has joined the same ranks of the team: technical difficulties.
-
Anybody else lose the picture?
-
wtf mate?
-
Picture is gone. Probably for the best. Now I can imagine an exciting hockey game instead of what I was watching.
-
Love Dougie but it’s time to move on and let some youngins get his ice time. It can’t hurt. He is just too painful to watch.
-
Do you think Schremp’s days are already numbered or is this more of a conditioning issue?
-
so apparently tavares is getting less ice time that bailey, nielson, moulson, comeau. So gordon is actually go with his playing time rule. Cause Tavares hasn’t been all that good today.
-
Watching this game has been a nice segway to bed time. I love Butch Goring, but come on already with all the fluff.
-
man, these guys really cant score! Heres a fantasy tip: pick up whichever goalie is playing against the Isles. Its a lock

(119) Corey Trivino is coming back from an extended summer stemming from an injured end-of-season and missing the first two games of this season.
At this point, it took a few games to knock the rust off, but he is looking sharp on BU’s (surprisingly) successful squad. He is especially standing out in the faceoff circle and in east-west passing. He’s spurred at least a few odd-man rushes and breakaways.
-
Can we ever score an even strength goal?oh i forgot we cant even score on the pp.The Ducks are shot tonight. If we don’t win this game I don’t know when we will get one.
-
getting the game in ATL from Foxsport…so interesting to hear the other team not try to totally embarass us, so if they win it looks better
-
and according to nhl.com tavares has the worst plus/minus in the league. Alexander Daigle anyone?
-
Gordo has a real knack at firing up his team. Non-stop energy.
-
Is this going to be another game where the other team just had to show up in the 3rd period to beat us?? How about we win the 3rd period for a change?
-
Looking into more stats, leading out team in hits is Matt Martin, in only 6 games.
Hmmmmmm -
Loved the intermission feature. Half our guys would be in those other professions
if not for our team business plan. -
made me think…if Northern Idaho can play the Univ of Georgia and thier football team gets like an additional $750,000 to fly across country, move the game to SportSouth and get a 55-7 smackdown….can we move some of our games to an alternate site/alt. programming to get that type of payday…..could be the answer to all our salary cap floor problems!!!!!
-
Treat my body to an extra hour of sleep, or stay up and watch this thrilling barn burner?
-
Was that Comeau who wanted to be a GM? Doesn’t he know he plays the wrong position? Goaltending is the career path! to GM!
-
Matt Moulson should have chose the party on saturday night.
-
This game is boring, its not even really worth having to endure all these soccer commercials on the ESPN UK feed.
-
It seriously looks like Gordon has no idea on how to fix this situation. Weight on the PP point, it’s obvious,he passes to Wiz. Everything from the point, can,t find the open man.
-
When the Isles go on the powerplay it is a perfect time to leave the room, to get a drink, some food, or use the bathroom.
-
You had to see that coming.
-
Bruno looked lost on that goal
-
When will Doug Weight retire?
-
saw some comments on Gordons’ speed & energy style…really…with our skaters??? Weight, Sim, Gervais, Hunter, Gillies, Parenteau, Hillen…hell, even Tavares is not a very good skater…just play a 2-1-2 and adjust the d-men and high forward based on situation….oh yeah, I forgot….what the heck do I know…..just WIN BABY!!!
-
these missed opportunities are getting absurd… 0 for 5 on the PP..
anyone notice ducks have the same goal song we had last year?
-
Gotta love Butch, “The Isles were very unlucky not to score on the PP.” I guess they are just the unluckiest team in the NHL.
-
8 in a row. Not 3 or 4. We continue to have long losing streaks every year.
-
Besides having all 30 teams in the playoffs, the Islanders should try to get the game shortened to two 20 minute periods.
Can’t score on power play, then give up the goal.
-
The Islanders look good tonight… that goal really is deflating, because they’re outplaying the Ducks on both sides of the puck.
Disappointed. This team seems to be incapable of scoring goals.
-
Did Butch say ‘unlucky not to score’ on those PP chances? What flavors does the Kool Aid come in?
-
gotta put the game on mute. Broadcast is a joke. It would make me feel so much better if Butch and Howie just came out and said man we suck!
-
4-9-2
-
When are we going to score first again? I got 5 bucks, can I buy a goal?
-
This team looks like they have mailed it in. The only ones give an honest effort are Martin, Bailey, Tavares, Moulson and Martinek. I think Gordo has lost the team. Time for a coaching change.
-
The last time they played there, Gordo stormed off after one of carlin’s hard hitting questions, just saying
-
What’s the over/under on goals by the sharks in tomorrow’s game against the isles?
-
Our only answer to a 7 game losing streak is to bring Sim back up.Why even release him then?God forbid we try to bring up someone who can score a goal.
-
Curtis freakin McElhinney and we can’t even sniff a goal. Give me a freakin break Isles.
-
Can’t wait for the “I saw some positive signs” comment from Gordon if they lose this game.
You know what’s a positive sign? Winning games. For the first time since becoming an Islander fan 15 years ago, I’m becoming apathetic.
And about Gordon…if he ends up getting fired because players like PA Parenteau are on the first line and aren’t scoring, that would be laughable. This team just isn’t good, plain and simple.
-
What was Carlin’s hard hitting question (211)?
Something like, “Does your team have any idea how to score a goal?”
-
Anyone know Isles recored for consecutive losses?
-
Give credit to Howie Rose, consistent pro, loss, after loss, after loss….
-
Grabner looks pretty good.
-
The Islanders play with such little energy, the induce apathy in their fans…seriously, there is inconsistent effort from shift to shift. Boring hockey…
-
Ted F.- over/under for SJ game… gotta be like 4
-
#218 – it doesn’t matter, we seemed destined to break it at the rate they are gonig now.
-
this was the best bailey has played since his hip injury but so far it hasn’t been enough. doug weight’s power play performance is laughable at this point. as is bruno gervais being out there on the power play.
-
Tavares has to shoot that from the top inside corner of the circle.
-
Not many! When the Isles do have a decent scoring chance they shoot over or wide of the net.
-
Gotta score here
-
How does Butchie look himself in the mirror?
-
OK, now would be the time to score.
-
i cant believe i stayed up for this. when does the torture pay off. The isles should just shoot shoot and shoot not be cute here
-
Leaving for LA tomorrow, thought about going to the game Saturday… until I watched tonight’s game. Oh, and the previous 7.
-
Can we decline the next penalty?
-
CB: Few, if any.
Shots don’t have to be quality — far from it. When I was a young hockey player growing up, we were tought to pepper the net, get loose pucks and rebounds, and score gritty goals. Good things can’t happen if you don’t throw pucks at the net.
This is the NHL. First shots don’t go in without screens or redirects. Rebounds are the key. The problem with the Isles is that they aren’t buzzing around the net and keeping their sticks on the ice, looking for those opportunities.
-
I can think of two saves where CMc had to actually move… Mottau and Moulson, I think.
-
Gervais on the power play. Must not want to score
-
Bruno the sniper! That was sad.
-
Gordon should be fired for having Gervais and Weight on the ice at the same time on the PP.
-
what planet does scott gordon live on where bruno gervais and doug weight should be on the ice during the power play at the same time!?!?! at any time of the game its crazy but with 5 minutes left?!?
-
Very nice. When the Islanders have had great opportunities, they have missed the net and McElhinney.
-
It is really getting tough to watch these guys…I am tired of the losing and excuses
-
CB remind us again why Cam Fowler is not an Islander point man!
-
They just don’t have the talent to score goals on the NHL level. All they can do is keep trying one has to go in sooner or later..
-
Jeff, I understand your frustration, but who’s he going to put on the point?
Jon Sim?
Sparky the Dragon?
-
Chef Bruno on the PP????
PATHETIC!!
-
#221- Poor Howie. He does Mets and Isles games.
-
Tomorrow Snow will check the waiver wire to see if anyone released a 50 goal scorer. Then he will stick to his no excuses, we are shooting for the playoffs line. Of course, since he doesn’t talk to anyone–he doesn’t have to make any excuses.
-
I am getting fed up. Bruno Gervais all alone and he shanks his shot. Then he gives a really WEAK pass after keeping it in the zone. He has to go, now.
So many opportunities, so many chances where if they showed a bit more jump they could have scored. With Okposo and Streit we would bury this team. Heck with one actual veteran goal scorer we bury this team. But no…we are going to lose 1-0 to a Ducks team that didn’t come to play. Ridiculous.
-
Ducks barely showed up for this. Only plus is we pushed the play for two periods. Any average team would have put the ducks away before the end of the 2nd. Can ANYBODY on this squad find the back of the net??? Here comes the sixth pp…thank god gervais and weight are out there. Someone head the godamn thing in!!
-
Can we call up Joensuu or anyone please!
-
I am getting worried as to what we are building around. I don’t see anyone on this team leading the franchise in the direction of success.
-
roloson.. what a guy! trying so hard despite the incompetent team in front of him…
nevermind the fact that the ducks have some no name guy in net..
-
I miss losing in overtime like last season.
Looking back, maybe THAT wasn’t as bad as I thought it was. -
Goddamn it. Please get rid of Comeau. By far the worst Islander tonight. Over a half dozen turnovers in this game alone.
Please, make the Comeau experiment end. He is a AAAA player. Makes Krog look like a NHL all-star.
-
HOw many NO NAMES have we been beaten by in this 7 soon to be 8 game losing streak, ugg!
-
The Isles are making soccer look like a high-scoring sport tonight!
-
we seemed to be alot better last year, sad, i just dont get it
-
There are no words.
-
more Sim more Gervais more Hunter!!! just kidding. This team is bad just like they have been for a very long time. Sad
-
Yet another Islanders loss
-
No heart no desire
-
There was absolutely no urgency after Konopka got the boot. Completely pathetic final five minutes of hockey. Awful.
C’est la vie. I’ll be at the game tomorrow. Come say hi if you see me — I’ll be the disappointed-looking dude in glasses with an Isles beanie and shirt on.
-
Shutout
-
Thanks again for the place to be, CB.
-
sigh… Rol looked good
-
We are gonna be straight out chum tomorrow
-
islanders didnt play hard enough or desperate enough.
-
Coming soon to a rink near you, an Islander 10 game losing streak
-
First career shutout…wonderful
-
And the beat goes on! The worst NHL game I have seen in a long time. Ducks get 14 shots and win, disgraceful!
-
A goalie I didnt know existed gets a SO. Tonight was their winnable game this week.
-
Islander’s ticket prices on stub hub just dropped to a low level comparable to my IRA.
Losing is bad but losing dull and ugly is a horror beyond belief.
Let’s see if the Islanders know the way to San Jose or maybe not show up and take an easy forfeit.
-
Now where’d I put that brown lunch bag?
-
They should just disband the team. It would be less painful.
Tip for Snow and Wang, When you have an AHL roster at the NHL level, expect a lot of 8 game losing streaks.
-
When does someone get held accountable? 10 losses? 15 losses? I know Gordon and Snow are in it for the long run but if this were any other organization something would be done. My frustration can’t even be measured right now.
Thanks CB. Enjoy the rest of your birthday. Sorry the orange and blue didn’t show up AGAIN.
-
Gordon must go! This team is not playing hard for him..
-
how many games do the islanders need to lose in a row to get a coaching change? 12? writing is on the wall just make it happen. we know where this islanders-gordon relationship is going to end, just do it now.
-
I can’t believe I stayed up for this. Don’t worry guys, it only gets easier with the Sharks up next. Young team is supposed to have ups and downs right? So when is the up actually going to get here? I am starting to tune this team out which I haven’t done in 20+ years of being a fan.
-
8 is great, but 9 will be fine.
Does Gordon make it back to LI or is he bought a ticket back to Boston?
-
Make a trade, fire a coach, waive someone, sign someone….DO SOMETHING!
This is ridiculous and just painful, REALLY PAINFUL to watch this team find a way to lose instead of finding a way to win.
-
what a surprise another loss. i have received more emails about garbage ticket packages then islander wins.
-
Tavares sucks!
-
I honestly cannot take much more of this. I am a positive and patient person, but this game was disgraceful. I cannot believe they could not get a goal. How many times can you miss the net? It is frustrating to watch Islander games. The Ducks played awful and Islanders still could not win. When is this going to end?
-
uggg, so tired of this, what the heck steamed up ZENO that he gets tossed, seems hes been a lot so far
-
Ill probably see Haley’s comet TWICE before i see another islanders win.
-
What a vanilla hockey game. Classic “new nhl”
-
Disagree, Islanders still playing hard. Especially notable the last three games including tonight. Just not enough good players, playing well.
Wingers play are the glaring weakness offensively right now, especially their positional play. Comeau leads the list. His play has been putrid since just before the losing streak.
-
Whats going on with this team? Double the shots? no goals? Gervais misses a great chance as usual? Can we trade our entire roster with a good team like the Capitals? I cant take it anymore.
-
Wow, Howie better be careful there on the postgame…saying the Islanders showed too little desire may rile up the Politburu. Seriously, it’s offensive to fans (and a major turnoff) for Butch to routinely “find the positive” when there is so much negative every night. He makes me want to tune out…
-
wow! Lets see what DP can do against the SJ sharks tomorrow… should be interesting. In times like this, legit players take their teams on their back and carry them. I guess we don’t have that guy. Maybe Ricky will do it
-
I would be happy if we lost in a shootout at this point. This years demise will be excused by Okposo and Streit’s injuries. Obviously they are big factors of the team but to use that as a bailout and plain silly. Way to go Garth. Was this really part of your plan? Year 1 and 2 was good. Year 3 looks like we’re going back a step to year 2.
-
Gervais played ok tonight and didn’t shank the shot. It wasn’t a very good shot, but it was a good diving block by Perry.
-
Yet another snoozefest. If they are going to lose every game can they at least be up-tempo, exciting or in any way entertaining?
I have to wonder if this game will hurt the Ducks next time out, seeing as they may believe you can get two points without actually doing much of anything.
-
I have 36 more home games to go to and they are already out of playoff contention. So angry tonight.
-
Not much else to say except, lets try again tomorrow to end the streak.
-
Sorry Chris, but you’re going to have to lose a regular reader for a while. I can’t watch this team plummet to another number 1 overall pick. I’m losing my interest in draft parties, and talking about the prospects that might make our team of never-will-be’s. We haven’t made progress, and I don’t think it’s possible to rebuild a rebuild. We haven’t one talented veteran who is healthy right now, and none of the young players are improving anymore. There’s no change, and I don’t see the point in caring.
-
if tavares was the real deal, he would do carry this team. but the guy is so weak on the puck. he had a few good chances, but an all-star caliber player would bury those. This guy is gonna be like gratton, daigle, stefan, DiPietro and all those other 1st overall busts. Why couldn’t we suck a year earlier and land Stamkos?
-
Gordo was chatty tonight! “Going in the right direction”??? Did he mean they were only about 20 miles from where they could dump the whole team in the Pacific??
-
So how many goals will DP let in tomorrow? He let in 7 the last time he was in the nets and 6 the time before that, and 5 the time before that? Do I hear 8 goals tomorrow?
-
LOL
-
Tavares is a mediocre player. So is just about everyone around him. A team that has been bad for THIS long should have a lone player that can turn a game around.
This team? Not even one.
Just relocate them already. Seriously, it’s time to go. Get off my Island, I am done with them all.
-
“Not playing with whole lotta confidence”???? Thanks butch, the insight is incredible. Wangdoodle should make him wear that salad bowl helmet from his old days during broadcasts. 16 points down the sh!#$er….and counting
-
What is the over/under on when our next win is?
-
Wow! What an idiot I am. I said no to O.T. at work tonight so I can see the game. When will I learn. Where do I start and where do I finish about this team. I can go all night, but all of you basically summed it up. Any decent coach out there. The team is supposed to be better than last year. Wow depressing. 6 pp and nothing to show for it. If Streit is the reason why we can’t score on the powerplay, then he deserves a new contract when he comes back at maybe 10 mil a season.lol. Good night all.
-
Approaching that point that it is comical how pathetic they look. It seems that “playing hard” has become the standard for us fans, forget about actually winning the game. It is baffling how weak this current squad is in every aspect of the game, yet hopes were so high at the beginning of the season.
-
Tavares is a bust? Lets relax already. He’s still a kid for crying out loud. Is it possible they come back to LI on a 10 game losing streak? Looking that way every game now
-
Despite Scott Gordon’s urging at practice this week, his players are still not going hard enough to the net….perfectly said…Gordon has lost this team, if he ever had it…bring in a real NHL coach with a real system…keep DP away from the ice too, at least they are in the games when he sits
-
Why does everyone sound so suprised? This is not a good team. I have seen good coaches do more with less but definitely not the case hear
-
Even bad teams do not lose 8 in a row.
-
Going to Tampa again this weekend. I think I might just pick up one of their jerseys to go with my 6 Isles ones which I might just start giving away. I don’t know if I should give up on this team. Is there hope?
-
This team stinks, there are now just hard to watch. When will the pain end? I am putting the over/under at 11 games. Hey CB, who are the top picks this year? (shake head with hands over face)
-
We could lose 20 in a row and Snow wont do anything but make excuses that we are going in the right direction. This team is filled with a bunch of garbage that no other team would even want if we released them.Call someone up,release someone, fire someone do something.Hunter,P.A,Sim,Weight,Gervais,Hillen,Shremp and even Comeau should not be on any NHL roster. This team is a joke.
-
As for Tavares, I still think the kid is a very nice young player, but I will say he doesn’t look “special” out there. He’s probably not fully matching the hype he had coming out of the draft, but then again he doesn’t have much of a supporting cast, so it’s hard to judge him too harshly.
-
Good first period, saw a lot of guys breaking off the wall going to the net they started to shy away from that in the 2nd and completely in the third. They need to go to the net put the puck there, good things can happen. Gordon was right guys are looking for the perfect goal. just get screens and guys crashing the net and actually put a shot on goal. That perry breakaway with 5 mins to go was unacceptable, especially in a crucial point of the game. Rollie gave them a chance to win when he stopped perry and bobby ryan on breakaways. The intensity in the third definitely wasn’t there these guys need to play play more desperate hockey. I will say they have played better cleaned up a lot of mistakes but if your not scoring the good things don’t matter. there man on man coverage also was very good. Lets just hope the guys can build off this and put a similar effort tomorrow. Besides not scoring i enjoyed the game, eventually the pucks will go in.
-
We need more anger. These performances are absolute GARBAGE! We actually outskated the Ducks for the most part, until right after that powerplay in the 3rd when the Ducks scored. Comparing Tavares to Alexandre Daigle is a bit much already, but holy cr*p. Gervais, Weight, and Mottau are part of a powerplay unit together?! This isn’t Sunday practice! The only guy I approve of right now is Matt Martin. This team needs a HUGE fire under their butts. This is completely unacceptable. CB, I liked your last post, expressing at least some anger. But someone needs to get out there, on video, criticizing this team. I can’t stand Butch Goring on the play by play. He emphasized a need to score on the powerplay in the 3rd, which anybody could call. Give me Jaffe back. I will go on record saying I want Scott Gordon gone. There may not be a coach available now who brings us to the Cup finals in 2 years, but at least get us someone who won’t allow us to go on 8 games losing streaks every year! It is a complete joke to watch this team right now. I wish I could use expletives right now. Good luck in San Jose boys. I’ll be asleep after the 2nd period.
-
The last time the Islanders had a lead? Oct 20 vs. Tampa Bay.
-
Tavares is too soft…and can’t skate…Moulson on the 2nd PP unit, really???…Weight playing 1:47 of each PP to turn it over everytime…Tavares will throw in the towel by game 30…Moulson as well to get traded…No sense of urgengcy…Gordon looks like a stickin’ characture of a real coach, get mad for goodness sake…throw a stick or just not look like a freakin’ automaton robot of the Wangster….oh yeah, and you SUCK TOO!!! You crap owner!!! To hell with China hockey, spend money on the real team, not rinks in a place where there is no return on investment…like the Lighthouse Project..IDIOT!!!! Admit it, you put all your eggs in a real estate deal that is not panning out, so you take it out on the team? When will the NHL take us over like the Coyotes, look what they did. We are among th 5 biggest jokes of a franchise in ALL sport in the WORLD!!!! Wang, sell the team…you SUCK!!!!
-
I just read an article the other day how Jeff Tambs was happy to be in a classy, winning organization with the likes of the nucks and the moose. I would have thought he wouldn’t trash the Isles after he left. WHat saddens me is when Jeff Tambs is rippin on the isles….you know we are terrible.
-
As has been the case for I don’t even know how long, this team just doesn’t have any goal scorers. Who are the scorers? Tavares is one we think, Moulson had a great year and after that…Bailey? No, more of a playmaker I think. Comeau? No, a third-liner at best. Parenteau? Been released how many times? Weight? Maybe in 1998. Nielsen? Nice player but limited offensively. Guess what happens in the next game…they score no goals or one and lose again. Guaranteed.
-
No Goals = No wins … When the Isles were winning they were putting up 5+ goals a game at the start of the season.
Now they can’t find the net … or find a way to even grab 1 loser point.
-
In October 1999 I took an evening class at Hofstra University in computer science. As I was driving home eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike, I glanced at NVMC parking lot (the Islanders were playing their first ever game against the Atlanta Thrashers that night) and the number of cars in the parking were extremely few.I checked Newsday the next day and tje attendance was listed at 3,000.I can not help but wonder if that minute figure will be duplicated with the Islanders return next week.
-
In the past my mindset on this organization was that the players were young and inexperienced and snow/wang were trying to do something positive. now? forget it. do not support this team. don’t go to games, don’t buy apparell or anything else until management shows that they’re willing to improve the situation on the ice and behind the bench
-
To #314,CB, why should you say sorry for doing anything other than doing your job. The Isles should be grateful for the coverage you provide and the insight. What does Garth think, that he is above reproach? Wow, it doesn’t suprise me, for a losing franchise, you would think he was Jerry Jones of the Cowboys…I think he is waiting for Leonardo to slip under the water before admitting to the ship is sinking!!! And to the fans ho thought you had it in for Garth…check the email address, probably sent from Hempstead Turnpike…wink, wink!
-
No one in front of the net.
No one can hit the net.
no guidance or direction.
No speed.
have not seen one islander rush the puck down the ice, all year.
Bruno and doug on the PP??? Neither one of them has yet to win a puck battle this year, come to think of it, you can include last year too.
…….and you wonder why they can’t win?
If I’m gordon, I make them take shooting practice for a few hrs. And what about passing skills, where the hell are they? I honestly thought we were playing the LAME ducks today, and yet..we still lost! Sorry, this team that I love so dearly is not an N.H.L team, and if it is, then we seriously have to get someone to motivate them or give them some direction. No one has done anything on this team for 2 weeks. If there is not at least one player that steps up, it’s time for a trade. It’s way too early for the season to be over, just not fair! -
The Isles had lost 7 straight games, were down 1-0 against a lifeless team and had a gift PP.
I thought I’d see some desperation. Instead, they passed the puck around the perimeter and had their worst PP of the game.
I don’t know if it’s a lack of skill or a character issue – Perhaps a bit of both.
I really don’t know what else to say. I think it’s time for this team to move on to greener pastures. They’re never going to win as the NY Islanders.
-
does anyone else notice how long it takes for john tavares to get up after he gets knocked to the ice?? he falls all the time so you should get a few examples of it tomorrow..
-
My God, this has just been brutal. I can’t believe how inept we are at getting a puck into the net. I can’t put into words how excruciating it’s been watching this team play over the past few weeks.
-
Did anyone notice the ducks appearing to apologize to there winning goaltender for a bad performance? Normally when that happens that team lost. lol just thought id bring that up.
-
There are 9 professional sports franchises located in the NY-NJ metro area and there is no debate, the NY Islanders rank 9th in overall stature. Wait a minute they rank 11th, I forgot to include the Red Bulls and the NY Liberty into the equation.
-
I am glad to see PA sit then Schremp. Comeau needs to sit next followed by JT. Hopefully this lights a fire under their butts. Why didn,t Gillies Dress?
-
I’ll say it for the third time. This is what happens when you disrespect a fan base by peeing on their leg and telling them its raining, creating a facade (REBUILD)shielding an AUSTERITY program. A true rebuild with youth ALWAYS is guided by skilled, productive veterans. Unfortunately these performers cost $$$. No doubt this dysfunctional, irrelevant mess is hardly a lure for a top tier, even low tier free agent, but there are opther ways to skin the cat. Trades!!! Here we are with an owner possessing Cap Space being the envy of the NHL and due to his unwillingness to provide a major league product on the ice alows it to burn a hole in his pocket. He is ruining these kids. Tavares and Bailey are boys amongst men. They need veteran help to show them the way. The problem is Wang simply doesn’t care. He evidently is just biding his time, collecting his new found revenue stream(formerly SMG’S)attempting to make up for his years of operating losses. Unfortunately we the fan suffer.
Its one thing to be disingenuous, but to put out leaks and innuendos about seeking talent such as Kovalchuk(I know he is having a tough go of it right now)in a pathetic attempt to placate,is damn insulting.
My patience has been tried and has been gone long ago. As has my emotional investment in this Organization gone dry and stale. Just as Charles is biding his time and throwing turd in our laps along the way yet calling it filet mignon,I am doing the same being as far removed from this franchise as I have ever been! The trust is gone and my interest at best is on life support! -
up at 3am with a sick child, decided to check the score from Anaheim. Glad I didn’t lose sleep time watching the game as for streaks according to wikipidia
Longest NHL losing streak:* Overall: 17 games, by 1974-75 Washington Capitals and 1992-1993 San Jose Sharks
-
True fact is the islanders are financial straped as a franchise, but the wangster has deep pockets just they don’t want to spend. I think this rebuilding is going to last until 201d when there no longer in uniondale they lie to the public n fans! MR WANG is running this team just like CA if anyone says anything negitive about the team play n true facts there out! They have no scoring at all just journey men that know other team wants! The only way this team is going to get someone as a quality goal scorer is thru the draft meaning first overall-forget free agency they screw that up all the time!
-
Hey Chris…..do Snow and Gorton both wear goalie masks at the dinner table? Maybe they’re malnourished and not really feeble minded and unqualified. Someone have an Ensure? And a straw?
-
Well, another moral victory for the Isles after their “second consecutive well-played defensive game,” according to Coach Gordon (I think Commissioner Gordon would be a better choice as bench boss at this point, anyone have Gary Oldham on speed-dial?). Too bad there isn’t another column in the NHL standings marked “MV” for all the H-and-H (horseshoes-and-hand grenades) games this team plays. I really want to be positive, but after seeing teams like Pittburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, Tampa Bay, Chicago, St. Louis and Los Angeles hit rock-bottom and once again rise to the ranks of the league’s top teams while the Islanders continue to struggle is deplorable.
-
Chris, is hockey dead on LI? Or just dying a slow painful death? After NYI loses 10 in a row and 3000 people are at NVMC for Tampa, do the funeral plans get made?
-
Glad I didn’t stay up for that.
-
We are dead already… I looked over at my stack of season tix and picked up a match….what a waste…. I will not spend anymore $$$ on these ass clowns
-
Martin killed that rusky with that hit
-
this is why so much of us are tired and dont go to the games anymore….if the management dont care to put a quality team, why should we care. How long do we have to make excuses for this team and take this abuse!
-
This ship is dead in the water and sinking slowly, this is just going to get uglier and uglier. How on earth does Snow look at himself in the mirror knowing what a hack he is? I don’t see any of the young core developing into consistently effective players. Their rebuild failed. Tavares is a Joke.
-
I’m glad that I sleept through the first 2 periods, I didn’t miss too much. I should have rolled over and with the remote.
The only thing missing is Nyisles and the rest of the Milberry-era fringe characters!
It starting to look like a double digit losing streak is all but a fact.
A minor league product at Major Leagues prices!
-
Thanks #92 for telling us how the announcers for the ducks are very complimentary to the Islanders.
After dealing with the too few ups and the many downs with this this team over the last 17 years, it’s always good to hear a non-New York point of view on this team.
But our pain tolerance is non-existent and we’re very tried of the mediocrity that the team shovels out there and expects us to except it. I just can’t see the light out of this tunnel, this season is just about finish before Turkey Day and nothing can change that. The other teams smell blood in water and no amount of effort can make up for the lack of talent. We’ll probably lose the 1st pick in the 2011 draft too!
As that maybe, the Isles are still my team despite the clown act that has run this team into the ground.
-
…maybe its time for another rebuild.
-
This is so depressing. I’m just about done. At this point I could care less if they left. Watching a product like this for the past 15 years with no promise for the future has taken everything out of me. A backup goalie with no experience is running this franchise. Enough said.
-
Bill Jaffe left the team for stating facts and giving objective opinions. No buttering up, no white washing. Why listen if your not interested in the truth. I’m a life long fan of the team, in good times or bad. I don’t need the organization making everything smell nice when it really stinks.
Chris I appreciate your commentary and your candor. Maybe your right. If people want a rosey outlook all the time, then maybe they should turn away for a while. -
Tough night. Had so many chances to put the game away but couldn’t buy a goal. Skilled players bury those chances. Bailey looked better at center with Comeau on his wing. Fans are upset at all the loses? How do you think the players feel. I don’t think this is what they had in mind when training camp opened.
-
im afraid this streak is going to 10. If cant score on the Ducks backup given him his first shutout and beat a tired Anaheim team that played night before. you have no chance vs sj or la.
This is getting ugly.
-
And really, enough with Blake Comeau. Complacent idiot is not a top 6 winger. Throw him on waivers and lets start shaking things up. I’m so done watching this team, really.. this is beyond embarrassing.
-
This team is pathetic. Absolutely no scoring, even from JT and Moulson. Its got to be a tough time for Snow right now. He’s either got to declare he’s keeping this group together and staying the course or he need to go out and make a trade for a bona-fide scorer with a veteran track record as one. This group isn’t getting it done. Its time to move on from Doug Weight and Trent Hunter and bring a couple of kids up from Bridgeport to get a look. If they’re not going to win or score, at least get a couple of kids some experience and give them a look.
-
I hope Gordon takes a different plane home after this road trip. Oh yea take Garth with you to.
-
Draft lottery time…..
-
Boring Team, Boring Stadium, Boring Play, Boring (or Non-Existant Nasty) Edge, Boring communication from Upper Management & Ownership, Boring desire from all of them. Boring same old scam on us Fans, an Owner who has no intention of winning.
-
The Isles are getting everybody’s C game, and still can’t win
-
CB, Thank you for your candor. I prefer to be realistic and be told the truth rather than pretend everything is fine. You are perhaps one of the finest in the business. I especially like your style because you are not a homer, and that doesn’t mean you don’t root for the Isles. I know you are pulling for these guys but it is what it is.
-
Even when we get a gift #1 draft pick like Tavares, he doesn’t pan out. He is not impressing me at all.
-
Tavares looks like a bust. He doesn’t have the size or speed to be an NHL star. Fire Snow now!!
-
I agree 347. It’s time to get rid of the dead weight on this team. If guys are not going to the net bring in guys that will. Bring some guys up from bridge. Bring in some new blood then give Gordon a little more time. If things do not improve you have to look at making a coaching change.
-
its the roster, not coaching….their is no chemistry with the lines and the Defense is the worst in the NHL
And with the 1st pick in the 2011 draft the New york Islanders Select…
So will the Wangster sell $5 tickets for the Tampa game
-
A few points on last night’s game:
-Only Moulson shoots the puck on this team. It gets on his stick and he puts it towards the net. Much the opposite of…
-Comeau whose dipsy doodling is not working at the moment and he is a turn over machine. He needs to sit.
-Gervais tried to play physical but he is still too weak on the puck. Weak shots, weak passes, there is either no confidence or no talent there. Without both he’s uselessPeople seem to be getting on Tavares. I see the effort there, and the flashes of skill but they are quickly snuffed out by the lack of help he gets. He is still a kid with no one to show him the way in the bigs. No one leading by example. Stamkos and other upper picks have been playing with talented vets. Who has Snow gotten for JT? Give the kid a little time and little credit! He isn’t the issue here and calling him a bust already is a bit ridiculous.
-
Purchasing a hockey team does not guarantee you are going to be profitable. Improving your on ice product and off ice experience for fans will generate interest, revenue. I’m tired of hearing how Wang saved the Islanders and how many money he’s losing. Tough. Great, now that you’ve “saved us”, we can look forward to an AHL level hockey club.
He’s made bad personnel moves that negatively affects the bottom line. Part of this year’s cap is going to Yashin. 15 year deal with DP. Now that his sweetheart Lighthouse deal isn’t going through, he’s no where to be found. He has tarnished this once proud franchise. Until Chucky is gone, this team will be nothing more than a bottom feeder.
-
Wow Islanders really making back-up goalies look good.
You’re going to be hard presses to find any Islanders fan to say anything positive during this losing streak. You could write a overally positive article on the Islanders and any fan is going to key in on the negitive aspect of the team, because we are in this tailspin. -
Chris – I’m sorry but the timing of the negative article is what bothers me. In the positive article you state, right up front, that you were denied an interview with Snow and had not been granted an interview in quite some time. Then less than, what 12 hours later (there’s no timestamp so I do not know the length) you write that other article. Now granted I agree with what you had to say but did it have to come right after the opening paragraph of Article 1 and so soon after Article 1. In fact, if you left off the fact you were denied that Snow interview I would not have a problem with it. But hey, agree to disagree. Still love coming to the site and hell, it’s part of SNY and it already has a TON of hits and comments as compared to the snyrangers blog. HAHA!!
-
How is it that Scott Gordon continues to get a free pass when it comes to how bad the Islanders continue to be. Gordon’s team has one win on the road against a divisonal opponent over the last three seasons. 1!!! If this was any other NY team Gordon’s head would have been chopped by now.
-
As a fellow die-hard fan, I totally understand all of the pessimism right now. I’m clearly not happy with the team’s performance during this awful losing streak either…
However, the Tavares bashing is just pointless and flat out stupid if you ask me. He’s a bust? Really?? When he had 8 points in his first 6 games to start the season and had the hat trick in Florida, everyone painted a totally different picture of him. RELAXXXX!! Tavares is going to be just fine. He’s slumping right now with the rest of the team. But to proclaim him a “bust” is just absolutely wrong.
Keep the faith people. It’s been rough, there’s no denying that. But this slump will come to an end and there is over four months of hockey left to be played.
LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!!!
-
Wow…..now we’rer ripping on Tavares….?
We’re just picking everyone apart aren’t we. I think we forget we don’t have Vinny Lecavelier and Marty St. Louis passing to him. I’m sure if we had veteran players like that….you would see Tavares and Bailey getting more points. Also News Flash: Gordon is not the problem. Hasn’t anyone been reading Botta’s posts? We just not have the right guys fitting into a top 6. Our most consistent player in the last three games has been Matt Martin. That kid will hit anything in sight. -
I stayed up to watch this garbage and as soon as Anaheim scored i turned it off, I knew the Isles weren’t going to tie it. Which is pathetic because in the first two weeks they would have. There’s no confidence on this team, no one skates it in and sets up, just a lot of dumping and chasing and passing around the boards in the offensive zone. They are always waiting for the one-timer from the point and if they don’t get it they are lost out there offensively. We weren’t the most talented team in the league with Nolan behind the bench but at least it looked like we knew what we were doing with the puck. I’m not so sure now.
-
Isles management seems out of touch. Charles needs to resolve the building issue well before 2015. Charles should have public meetings with Brooklyn and Queens to put the heat on Town Of Hemstead. Garth should be cutting guy like Weight, Sim, Hunter, and Bruno. These guys will not come back to hurt the team. You have to show the fans you care and are trying.
-
Chris,
I have to say you were right about
the Isles start to the season. It was just
a optical illusion. I think it’s time for a
change, Gordon has to go. His system
isn’t working and the offense is non
existent. -
Your honesty and Critique is Refreshing and finally here with SNY. Thumbs up to you Botta !!
Snow does not want to be held to the fire which is why he declined you. It just continues with their silence rule from Wang, who is the major cause to the problems you see on this team. -
Anyone who thinks that JT is a bust at 20 years old after a 54-point rookie season playing on one of the worst teams in the league is not paying attention. JT is the only thing this team has going for it. In three years, he’ll be mentioned in the same breath as the elite players in the league.
-
If I were CB I’d shut down the blog for a week and let all of you find somewhere else to complain. Half of you are whiners, the other half are ingrates.
To sit and point the finger at one, two or even five players is a joke. This whole team, save maybe Dwayne Roloson, are not producing.
Then to sit there and comment day after day about how invaluable this blog is to the Islander fan and then blast CB for a negative article? I’d hate to say it, but at this point some Islanders fans are no better than Rags fans.
-
any guesses on how long this losing streak can be? anything can happen and they could win anywhere along the way, but they could easily drop the next five.
-
Glad to see I’m not the only one who stayed up till 1:00 A.M. on a work night to watch that dud of a game … Painful … Very painful …
-
The buck starts and stops with Wang. He brought in the backup goaltender/GM with no experience. He decided he wanted to run his team by committee and ran 2 good coaches out of town. He pushed for the contracts on Yashin and DP. No FA’s want to sign here because of the lack of stability of the organization due to Wangs handling of the team. Add on top of that the old building and the Isles will always be near the bottom of the standings. Wang must go!
-
Garth and Wang are killing us…From the beginning of the season it was apparent that we did not have a legitimate goal scorer…And they did nothing to address it…Now it, is rearing it’s ugly head…Scratching and clawing to get a goal and we can’t even get one…Roli was great but now management needs to bring someone up or make a trade.
-
SJ, LA and Tampa – that’s 11 in a row.
you are waiting for the season to start since spring and they are out by Thanksgiving. That’s so frustrating. And the players are still getting their paychecks. For what? For loosing to the team that came out flat with back-up goalie in net who earned his first NHL shutout?
Just waive half of the team and bring another half from Bridgeport. it can’t be any worse. JUST DO SOMETHING. -
Snow gives Katie Strang an interview and does not get challenged by her at all! Remember she was hand picked by Wang and corp for Good reason.
Snow should absolutely give Botta a interview but will not because he and Wang might be exposed for who and what they really are.
It’s amazing to me how the fans just seem to except the same product and results every year. The fools are not Wang and Snow if you know what i mean.
Snow man up and give Chris Botta an interview, what do you have to hide? -
3 words, COACHING, COACHING AND COACHING. Gordon has to go. I believe we have players here that are good and with the right guidance and leadership can win games. I am not saying they will win the Stanley Cup but in a league where it is pretty hard to actually lose a game (OT points and SO pts) they have enough talent to be in the hunt for the last 3 playoff spots. I believe this is an 87 pt team that should make the playoffs. The question is does Garth believe that? If so then he cant let this team slide any further and has to fire Gordon. His system is not suited for the nhl or the players on the team. His system is too busy, they seem to skate all over the place without purpose. This is the reason the team is bad 5v5. If we had a real coach who taught real nhl hockey (defense, forechecking and positioning) the team would flourish. However I dont know if anybody worth their salt would come in here. That is the biggest question.
-
Seriously I am done with this team, until clowns like Gervais, Weight, and especially Sim are let go and Gordon is FIRED I will no longer bother watching ! 15 games into the season and the we are completely out of it already , what a disgrace this once proud franchise has become ! Adam Larsson here we come, also Schremp gets scratched but Weight doesn’t ? Get a clue GORDON !
-
This team needs to practice hitting the net and making faster passes, if you watch the game every pass is soft which gives the other tean a chance to steal it. And speaking of passes, since when did everyone think they were Magic Johnson who can do a behind the back/no look pass, wake up guys and play smarter than that
-
373 there is no doubt Scott Gordon has to be looked at. This team should be doing better. No Cup or maybe no playoffs but not an 8 game losing streak. The team is not responding and not going all out. Injuries are not an excuse.
-
This team is doing exactly how they should be. These magical goal scorers don’t exist. And BTW, those who are calling Tavares a bust – WOW. Just wow.
-
The team does not need a new coach. Somehow, the worst GM in the game is escaping accountability. He has given Gordon a pathetic roster. People are blaming gordon because players can’t score? Newsflash, the isles can’t score because snow put together a team without scorers. Yet, Gordon is on the hotseat? What a joke. The real enemies are Wang, who won’t spend, and Snow who executes his screwing of the fans with a smile on his face.
-
Is there a worse pro sports team in America right now? I will follow the Islanders wherever they go because I cannot root for the Rangers, but a move off of the Island and away from Wang may be the only way to improve. Obviously Snow will be GM for life and there is no way we can win with a GM that gave DP a 15 year contract and who has no respect from the players. My friend who is an AHL ref says that the players in the AHL talk about how bad it would be to play for the Islanders management. That is incredible. Bettman takes a lot of blame here for allowing Wang and Snow the ability to circumvent the salary cap floor.
-
I just said to someone that this might be the worst stretch of hockey I’ve ever seen the Isles play. I’ve been a fan since 1988, and I’ve racked my brain to find a worse stretch. There have been long losing streaks, there have been a ton of blowout losses. But this is just a combination of lethargic play, terrible coaching, and a sense that they’re not in it down 1-0. Scary stuff.
But I’m sure, when 10:30 rolls around tonight, I’ll be watching. Why? Because I’m an idiot.
-
How can anyone get on Tavares? He’s not the same type player as a Stamkos, Hall, Sid, Ovie. He is an around the net Ryan Smyth, John Leclair, Dale Howerchuk type player. Until there are guys around him that can get the puck to the net he’s gonna have a tough time scoring. Once that happens, he is going to be lethal. Typical Isles fans to give up on 20 year old after only 95 games in the NHL.
-
15 in a row, here we come…hey, but at least everyone in the locker room loves each other!
-
So who are the top 2 players in the draft next year?Season over let the dumping of players begin. This team is a ll grinders for the most there are only a few with talent to score thats what happens when your payroll is at a minimum. You get what you pay for.So don’t expect anything more tahn a top 3 pick to look forward at.Start dealing for picks and players this is not going to get better till the arena situation finally plays itself out.Move to Queens already so we can attract fans and players.Agree with me or not????
-
Am I right that ‘Killer’ implied the coach left DP in out of spite, or to prove a point? This would indicate a serious rift with the G.M.
Killer is right about the team going south not being a coincidence. Some of the early success was against opponents not fully wound up for the season. And the whole team started to suck, not just DP, when Bailey was bounced back and forth from center to wing, then missed games with the hip.
Totally agree about Sim. He in no way is the reason this team sucks right now. People simply need to place blame, and expect Sim to be something he’s not.
If Doug Weight is a focal point of this team – which he has been for much of the time – then the coach has no confidence at all in the kids. I admire and respect Doug Weight, his career, and how he conducts himself as a pro. But the man is done. His skills are diminshed to the point that his minutes are not justified. Obviously the old guys on this team are not helping them win, or learn how to win. If they’re not helping them win, then they are helping them lose. Something big needs to change, and soon. The longer this goes on, the more affect it will have on the kids we all hope are the core for future success. -
the guys i really feel sorry for are butch and howie. im sure their getting a decent paycheck, but you couldnt pay me enough to do that day in and day out with this team.
-
Did anyone else make comparisons last night with Fowler versus Nino? Fowler looked very good. Would he have looked better than some of our guys? Just a question as I was happy with Nino as our pick but it was “Supposed” to be Fowler.
-
I actually like Gordon as a coach these past few years but lately his choices are mind boggling to me and maybe it is HIM that is the problem. The constant switching of the lines doesn’t allow anyone to gain chemistry together, moving Bailey who was on fire on center earlier this season to wing has obviously cooled him off (though he and Comeau looked much better last night and hopefully that continues tonight!), and Weight on the point on the pp or now up front- he can’t shoot and is too slow. Some of his choices are so obviously wrong, it’s hard not to blame him. But to bash Tavares and call for all these trades but some of these posts is RIDICULOUS. It Mad Mike writing all this crap?? If you remember correctly, trading all of our youth was what got us years of mediocrity to start!! JT on any other team in the league would have double the numbers right now because he needs veteran scoring help!! End of subject.
-
Agree with #348- I am and always have been a die-hard. At this point they can leave. Yeah I would cry like Hartford Whaler fans, but I can’t take much more. The management and players still get paid even when they suck. The fans suffer. We the fans are like a suffering animal that needs to be put down. Just leave and put us out of our misery.
-
Stop giving Gordon no blame. From the day Gordon was named coach, all we heard about was his system this, his system that. I’ve been sitting in the stands for every game over the last three years and frankly see no system. dumping into the corner and having your D pinch is not a system.
-
Chris, you tell it how you see it and that is why many of us love your site. There is no sugar coating. The Kool-Aid drinkers who have an issue with your article can go back to the Islanders propaganda site, which is an absolute joke!
As for Garth Snow, he is an absolute joke as well. He is not a GM, he is a backup goalie pretending to be a GM. Who the hell does he think he is refusing to give interviews, particularly to someone who gave 20 years of loyal service to the Islanders org.!
In my humble opinion, this org. isnt going anywhere until Wang and Snow are gone!
-
So are we gonna be Buyers or Sellers at the trade deadline?
-
Great…out of the playoffs. Another wasted year to do what?….more development on a losing team? Do the Isles have to go 0-10 before they fire Gordon? If yes, I hope the Isles lose the next two games.
-
To comment on “Killer’s” coincidence quote with DP rejoining the team back in 2009- if you a re a Mets fan, the most comparable situation was this year when Carlos Beltran returned to the lineup in around the beginning of August or so. The Mets weren’t facing any major expectations and moreover, CF Angel Pagan was having a career year. When Beltran returned, the Mets seemed to go into a major funk and Pagan’s numbers dipped because he was afraid he’d lose his playing time to the veteran Beltran. The clubhouse chemistry (or whatever was left of it) seemed to vaporize.
@ Ed, post 388- yes there are worse team in America- Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys, lol.
J-E-T-S JETS, JETS, JETS!
-
is there even a system anymore? scott gordon has hardly used the word system and the isles are no longer backchecking/forechecking as a team. its a pathetic sight to see. we are all tired of seeing scott gordon on the bench!! MAKE A CHANGE BEFORE WE CHANGE THE CHANNEL!
-
There’s been some talk recently of people wondering if our young guys are as good as we hope they are. It’s something I’ve been thinking for a little while as well but was afraid to bring up.
Question: Aside from maybe his first NHL goal, in 90+ games can you name one time that you were watching Tavares and saw him do something that made you say “wow”? -
Maybe it is time for Potvin or a Trottier to step up and pull a “Joe Namath” and blast this org. They are disrespecting the jersey they put on every night! If you are not going to play hard you are out!!I don’t care who it is!!
You know how bad it is, I am starting to wonder what Milbury would have done in this situation!! God help us!!
Is it true we haven’t even had a lead in a game during these last 8 games, Wow that’s unbelievable!! -
I like Scott Gordon. There, I said it.
And a special thanks to Charles Wang and Garth Snow for saving me $700. so far this season and convincing me to skip last night’s game to read and get a good nights sleep instead. -
its easy to pile on when things are going as bad as they are right now.
However, if this was any other sports franchise in any city something would change..
I blame the owner, the head cheese, the big enchalada, the head muckity muck!!!
Wang is easily oine of the worst 5 owners in sports.. and that being nice…
I understand we have revenue generation issues but peopke should own sports teams for the profit. If you cant play with the big boys then get out. With 2015 looming there should be plenty of people who would plunk down cash to get this franchise. If Wang is holding on for 2015 and truley intends on keeping the team local then plunk down some cash. If not… I’m afraid that he is positioning this team to pack up and move.
-
sorry CB… I should have written “people should NOT own sports team for the profit”
-
FIRE GORDON HE HAS NO CLUE.He should skate them until they puke after each loss maybe they will get it.Maybe some of the guys are playing to get traded.Gillies plays hard for the 2min he gets a game and shows emotion and bring something to the table unlike some others.Sim skates hard but brings nothing else.It is good to see Marty stand up for himself win or lose.Bring in HITCHCOCK AS THE COACH.

That was great. Well produced. A show, live on TV for us Isles fans would be sweet. Maybe they will give you a spot. Move over Mike Francesa.
