CAROLINA 7 ISLANDERS 2
Burn the tape, destruct the live chat
“Our play away from the puck was horrendous,” said Scott Gordon, and he could have been talking about his forwards, defensemen and goaltender. A total team disaster, an organizational embarassment, leads to the Islanders’ fifth loss in a row in regulation. “We’re leaving too many things to chance,” said the coach, who was upset about his team’s failure to backcheck and the lesson he thought they were taught in Philadelphia. Gordon is done talking about it with his players. The next solution? “We’ll address it by playing time.” Let’s see if he backs up his words Thursday in Ottawa. The bad news: you really do not want to review this Live Chat. The good news: the Islanders’ extraordinary fanbase lives. Readership was in the thousands. I could not keep up. Thank you, and thanks also to Sean Leahy of Puck Daddy.

Watching the Penguin, Stars game. The Penguins are down by 3 and know how to stick up for each other. Only if our Islanders knew how to do the same.
-
Can you blame the guys?
Why would anyone want to play in front of DiPietro at this point?
-
This team is showing its true colors. I thought the team would have a fighting chance this year, but I was 100% wrong. I guess we can start the top draft pick talk.
O and please start ROli for the next 10 games. DP set the tone when he gave up that awful 1st goal. It was all downhill from there. Time to give him less ice time.
-
A strong start until DP gave up a bad goal then the team collapsed. They have to do something with him at this point. He is horrible and its more then just rust.Send him down and let him work on his problems there. We also need some size on D.These games are getting tough to even watch.
-
Did we win? Didn’t watch… Every game ends with a blog about it being the worst game of the year! Jeez… Thank goodness I am not really invested in this team fan wise. Why should I be? The team has been horrendous since ’94… I need Comcast to cut off my Center Ice Package because I only asked for NBA League Pass… Let’s Go Islanders????
-
they should send DP down let him work on his game. Forget this one re-group get em tomorrow
-
Locker room problem? Coaching issues? System deficiencies? Embarrassment is an understatement. Injury excuses? I don’t think so. DP? It’s not just him. All the good feelings of 4-1-2 are gone now. Something needs to be done – and soon!
-
Dp should just go away. He is overrated and never will win with him between the goal. I had enough of him and his BS
-
Everybody needs to stop defending Rick. He’s done
They look like am echl team.
-
There has to be something more than just bad play. If this is what we can expect from a Scott Gordon led Isles then move to Quebec already and stop torturing the fanbase. I’m going to game Saturday, and I’ll be livid if these guys play this crappy again on Saturday. When do we get a different coach? (Not that he is the cause of the problem, but something has to give here.)
-
DP TO BP, or even better yet RETIRE already your DONE
-
Brutal, just brutal. No other words can describe what I watched tonight.
-
The Isles are a below average NHL team with Roloson in the nets.
With DP in the nets they are a below average AHL team.
4.21 GAA and a .854 SV pctge.
Where’s Dubie?
-
I say it’s about time to make DiPietro the GM. He clearly is not an NHL goalie right now. 1 good period in the last 4 games just doesn’t cut it.
I don’t want to see Gordon take the fall for having his hand forced to play DP and work with a team on a shoe-string budget.
-
readership in the thousands….home attendance, not so much. Also, Gordons’ comments are getting old when he says that “we’ll address it in our meetings” hey Scott, ya aint teaching too well in those meetings. sorry.
ugggghhh -
Embarrassing again. Was pro Gordon. Since yesterday’s interview, which was done very well, I can see why the players might not be responding to Gordon. Good questions by CB, but even I started to get bored hearing Gordon talk. Cannot not imagine what the players have to listen to day in and out. Team is not inspired. I believe DP should be our back-up eternally now. No point in staring him in games. Let DP ride the pine until Rolo needs a break. Let DP play more next year and the Bridge goalies buy their time as someone becomes #1.
Been a fan since ’78. Tired of this too. Still a fan for life but feels like I did something wrong now I’m in hockey fan HELL. -
The problem is not the coach, its the owner running the Islanders. Latest punch in the gut to loyal season ticket holders…tons of 300 level seats for $20 on StubHub all over the place courtesy of the Islanders (who else would have 20 seats in multiple rows for sale)
Enjoy the Flyer fan invasion and remember ..they paid $20 for seats Emperor Chuck charged you up to $75 for
-
Perfect assessment. The players are not doing the basic and do not deserve to win. I cannot believe all the blown coverages in the defensive zone. We do not have a forecheck anymore. We are in the offensive zone for 3 seconds and out again. Total melt down. If they do not show any progress tomorrow it might be time to give others more ice time.
-
Trust me. A team will not put it on the line -blood, injury, personal, when there is a joke of a Keeper playing behind them.
-
DiPietro is an albatross on this team on many levels – his contract, his lack of being able to stay healthy, him putting himself above the team.
He’s not even an average goalie anymore. Maybe he can take care of the landscaping on Wang’s properties to earn the money from his contract, he sure as heck is never going to earn it on the ice.
He is done. Only the asinine contract Wang signed him to is keeping him around.
-
I see two possibilities here. Maybe Gordon/Snow is forcing Ricky into these games to shame him into retirement. A more likely possibility is that Charles is forcing them to play his boy in the hopes that Ricky will “shake off the rust.” Such a strategy, of course, is insulting to every other player in that locker-room. Ricky is not an NHL goaltender at this time. The proper place to prepare for the NHL is the AHL. I am sure that Gordon and Snow (two former goalies) understand this. The players and fans deserve much better. The owner’s blind loyalty to Rick will only further damage the reputation of this team among players in the league (and alienate our soon-to-be RFAs).
-
This organization stated the goal for this year ws to make the playoffs. If that is in fact the truth than Roli needs to be in net every game, with the exception of back-to-backs. Even with Roli between the pipes a 7th or 8th seed would be tough to pull off. But playing a back-up goalie night in and night out gives the team no shot. That being said the effort 5-on-5 has been terrible, and obviously needs to improve or else it wont matter if DP and Roli are both in goal at the same time, you cant win scoring 2 goals a game
-
I am sure DP is a great guy, but honestly I don’t care. It may not be all his fault, but the fanbase is sick of looking at him because he represents all that went wrong with Wang’s failed ownership.
Just like the Mets have to realize they need to dump Castillo because he is one of the poster boys for the Minaya era, the isles have to sit DP
-
If upper management does not have the discussion of sending DP down they are not doing right by the organization! Defense has not been good in front of him BUT he has been just PATHETIC!!!
-
Missed the game because I was coaching my son’s Pee Wee team. It sounds as though the hockey was better where I was.
-
We deserve better!!!! I am sick to death of the excuses and the rebuild BS!! Look around the league! Everyone has young talent! Skinner and Sutter tonight! We are a patchwork of castoffs!! DP is a shell. We are years away from being a real contender. We need real hockey management and coaching now!! What I saw tonight was a young team quitting and losing confidence and a coach with no answers!! UNACCEPTABLE!! Wang make believe you care a little. Do something! Hold people accountable! Show the few fans left that this season will be different! Change the Culture!
-
If DP is rusty (as opposed to just plain bad) then why isn’t he “unrusting” in the minors. Why is our goaltender trying to shake off the rust at the NHL level?
For those of you who think DP really has talent, just remember who drafted him.
-
dipeitro is so bad its almost comical. how does trent hunter fit into gordons overspeed coaching?
-
GORDON = MANGINI
-
For me I already want the Kevin Poulin era to begin!
-
GORDON = ART HOWE
Nice guy, poor talent, in over his head
-
I am just about speechless nowadays. I doubt everything about this team. Its depressing. I think I’m close to being done following them after 25 plus years. I don’t have it in me anymore. At least I have the Mets…. ooops at least there’s suicide.
-
This was an embarrassment. If Ricky is allowed to keep playing, Gordon’s going to wind up losing this team. They looked dangerously close to quitting on him tonight, and if that happens, he’ll never get them back. (They should keep Bob Hartley’s number handy.)
This is pro sports. If you can’t play, no matter the reason, you go away. Time for Garth to step up and do something with Ricky – sit him, demote him, buy him a one-way plane ticket, etc. The torture cannot continue.
-
hey dp if you really care about this organization volunteer to shake off the rust in bp. your hurting not helping your teamates right now
-
waive DP now no one will pick him up Wang i Promise come on when you dont play well you go to the ahl thats it he should have started there this year why would you ever throw him into the fire like this unless they want him to retire which im all for at this point i feel bed for the guy no one wants to suck and he is a better goal tender then me but thats not saying much please go to the bridge DP!!!
-
the million dollar question = what do we do with ricky????
-
Hey how ’bout Franzs’ defensive play.Way to go Brutal.Welcome back Schrimp(defensive liability)Dp looked horrible,Weight looked older than Favre,Grabner needs to be on 1st line period.D-sucks,Hunter sucks,Gordo and his system sucks, owner sucks.I am fed up w/ this sorry excuse for a franchise. The line combos and goaltending from the get-go gave us no chance to win.I don’t care about another top pick. This team is in ruins and needs an owner w/ cash to buy talent plain and simple.
-
How does a team do all the necessary things for 7 games (skating hard for 60 minutes, relentless forecheck, finishing checks, winning the battles in the corners, etc.) and see the success in the standings as a result of their hard work, and then do a 180 in every facet of the game for 5 straight games? Blake Comeau has once again stopped doing what makes him successful and I can’t understand why. Most of the players are off their game (save Konopka who fills his role extremely well IMO). CB, can you weigh in on the above and let us know if you think Gordon is losing his team? I’m starting to see similarities to the way the team played under Sterling, and that’s not a good name to be compared to!
The goalie situation is what it is and I’m embarrassed for DP at this point. Not being able to cover a puck and falling down without being able to get back up is not rust. He appears to be regressing if at all possible. I really hope he can turn it around – I want to see my team be a winner again.
-
How many times can we hear howie say the words “and the islanders give it away” sloppy sloppy sloppy game! Just disgusting hockey! No look passes from behind the net are great when they convert but when they slide to an open opposing player it just makes you sick!
-
I’m not sure how Charles remains silent through all this? Charles has to decide does he want to be an owner or not. There is no question talent is missing on this team. Having said this Scott should still be doing a better job than this. The team should still be playing hard no matter what Goalie is playing.
-
“Our play around the puck was horrendous,” said Scott Gordon.
Yep. Especially your goaltender.
He’s afraid of the puck.
-
Since Wang now knows he will never get his Lighthouse project, he’s no longer willing to invest in this team. He’s playing a team made up of castoffs and low level talent, with the exception of a few of the draft choices, who must rue the day they were drafted by the Isles. Imagine growing up a kid in Canada, dreaming of playing in the NHL and then ending up on this wreck of a team. Pitiful.
-
i cant watch this team anymore…when are we goin to start getting rid of players like Trent Hunter…hurry up b4 he get injured
-
I absolutely, positively agree with whoever surmised that no one would want to play in front of a goaltender as bad as DiPietro. Would you play to win knowing that your backstop, the man you have to rely on to make key saves, can’t play the puck or cover the puck without letting in goals? It’s probably an absolute nightmare for everyone on the team, probably with no person moreso than Roloson, who damn well knows he gives the team a much better chance to win.
Let’s not beat around the bush — DiPietro sucks. This team has a lot of problems, there’s no doubt about it, but DiPietro is the worst thing about the Islanders right now. Watching him play this badly, especially in front of away fans that may not “know” him as well as we do (lucky us), is embarrassing. Absolutely, positively embarrassing. He’s garbage, and saying he needs to “shake off the rust” in Bridgeport is being nice. They probably are keeping their fingers crossed he doesn’t get pawned off on them, too.
I stopped watching after 5-1, because I couldn’t take much more. It’s the first time I didn’t watch the full game all year, believe it or not. But the fact is, DiPietro’s piss-poor stickhandling cost the Islanders a goal, and his inability to cover the puck, something you learn how to do when you’re a seven year old Mite, caused another goal. He’s awful.
I was talking to a friend at work, a fellow hockey fan, and I told him that I’d love DiPietro to do the unlikely. Talk to Wang, tell him that he understands that he’s a liability, taking up a precious roster spot and sucking money from the organization, and agree to a reasonable buy-out. Then, get the hell off of Long Island so someone can actually give this team a chance to win.
I’m going to the Islanders-Sharks game out here in the Bay Area on the 11th. I hope DiPietro starts, so I can be as embarrassed as humanly possible.
-
That was horrible (anybody else feel that way?) but I’ll be back in front of the tv tomorrow night for another 2 1/2 hours of punishment. Of course MSG will be too crass and show commercials instead of the best thing out of Scotiabank Place: Lyndon Slewidge singing “Star Spangled Banner” and “O Canada”.
-
Ricky does look horrible, if he did not have a 50 year contract they might know what to do with him. Other then that, the D can’t get out of the zone and the offense can’t even get a good shot on a 5-3. Other then that, all good. I am going to Anaheim and LA next week, hope a different team is on the flight.
-
13 goals in 2 games? I just don’t understand what management is doing hear with DP. I never bashed DP in the past and yes the whole team was bad but sometimes there are games where a goalie can make a difference and DP was no where close to that. If Gordo is forced to play DP and then the coach gets fired because he is the scapegoat, what makes you think that we will get a better coach. Already been through that, that’s why we got Gordo in the first place A Puppet. No high caliber coach will come here and take orders from Wang. I didn’t want to say it but I’m starting to agree with fellow posters on how management is a circus. Really fed up. Forget about going to sat. game, I’d rather take a fishing trip to Florida. And this coming from a fan thats never missed a game well atleast on T.V.
-
The organization needs a wake up call.
-
DiPi just go away u r an embarrassment ! Bring up the kids, can’t be any worse ! Cut loose Hunter, Gervais and Hillen they are terrible would not make another NHL roster GUARANTEED ! Joennsu, Hamonic and Kohn are better than these bums ! Koskinen should be brought up as well ! Good Bye “Red Light Ricky” !
-
Please send DP to bridgeport and call up koskinen or poulin. It probably says somewhere in his massive contract that they cant do that, but for the sake of the team and the fanbase we cant have that clown in the net
-
Maybe Ricky can replace Butch Boring in the booth.
-
Atrocious. Ricky looked horrible…Gervais…just cut him. Can a nhl player possibly play weaker than Gervais?
I actually missed Sim who at least looks like he’s playing hard. I love Moulson but sometimes all I see him doing is waiting in front of the net.
Comeau and Bailey need to find their fire and Konopka…I mean its cool he drops the gloves but how about firing some shots and looking like you want to really fight instead of setting some imaginary tone. I can’t really criticize Z…I like what he brings to the team but this team plays with no passion way too often, not sure who’s to blame.
-
Just move to Quebec City already !
-
If Rick cared about the team, he should do what’s honorable and ask for a demotion until he can get his act together.
-
I like DP, but the simple fact is at this point he is a college goalie. He should be shut down at least at the NHL level for this year. He can’t move side to side or get off the ice & back on his skates. I don’t think it’s Gordon, but if you don’t want to lose the team you need to sit DP for this season
-
What makes you think bridgeport wants Ricky? They probably want him to get injured so he can’t do damage to either of the 2 teams. Sad.
-
This is what happens when you have an owner and general manager who don’t want to accept any responsibility for putting a garbage product on the ice. You will end up in draft lottery every year. When you draft a cornerstone player like Tavares you are supposed to surround him with a strong supporting cast not leave him stranded without any talented players to play with. This team also needs to completely rebuild the defense with some quality defenseman instead of bunch of 7th or 8th defenseman on other teams and make them a 3rd or 4th on this team.
-
I cried a little bit tonight. I’m 29 yo, and have been a die hard fan since I was 10.
I have only seen this team win two playoffs series. Regardless, I’ve continued to support this team through all the years.
But this is getting too difficult to watch. The Isles looked worse tonight than they did two years ago. DP is awful, and needs to be sent to Bridgeport or bought out or forced into retirement.
I’ve always supported Gordon, but it seems like this team may be beginning to drift.
I just don’t understand what happened b/w games six and eight. I’m beginning to reevaluate my relationship with this team.
-
I wasn’t able to watch the full game, im goin to watch it tonight. The islanders were doomed from the start when gordon decided to play DP. its basic psychology, the players just got railed in philly. Instead of giving the players a sense of it was the goalies fault by not playing dp. He goes a head and plays Dp. not only do u already start off buy having a low moral in the room it makes things worse for your team when you play the same goalie that let up 6 goals the prier game. than let in a soft one for the game opener is debilitating for a team that is in a hole as deep as the islanders are in. The thing that is really a head scratcher for me is why wouldn’t Gordon play dp tomorrow its only a day difference. No excuses in my opinion bad coaching move. Only reason i can think of him playing him is management direction or because he was a goalie and after a bad game he wants to go right back at it asap. Thats just not the right move for the team. Be prepare for more losses gordo has lost this team. Changes need to be made now. this was a must win imo and now its just going to get worse from here.
-
what I don’t see is anyone putting the blame on the coach. If you’re down 2-0 in the first period (against philly) and if your goaltender has allowed a soft goal, why do you not make the change? If you’re down 3-0 after 1 tonight, why not make the change? If you’re looking for a way to spark the team and WIN games, why in the world are you allowing this to continue without showing any emotion or fire?
Is it about punishing snow and wang by leaving rick in to suffer through two terrible defeats, and cost the team two demoralizing losses, or is it about doing whatever you can to win? I can understand starting Rick to try and get him going, but if it’s not working and the game is still within reach and you do nothing, why in the world should you not be fired?
I don’t understand why the team is allowed to continue to flail around the ice without showing any spark and nothing is done by the coaching staff to try and spark them.
Gordon’s system is good, when they play it hard they’re successful, so if they’re not responding and you’re not doing anything to change it up, have you lost the team or lost the drive to win?
It feels like the team has quit from the coaching staff down. It’s early and there’s plenty of time to turn it around, but if your goal is the playoffs and you’re not doing everything in your power to get your team going then you’re just taking up space and you need to go.
Tomorrow night against ottawa is the clincher for me. Another rout and I think Gordon may end up in the crosshairs.
-
Agree with pretty much everything mentioned above. The team that is out there right now is pathetic. Sure there is some great talent in the minors but good luck retaining the guys that are already here. I like Moulson and PA is ok but do they belong on a first line? NO! Moulson a second liner tops and PA a third. If this team had any intelligence whatsoever Tavares would be paired up with some proven veteran talent…and no not the 40 year olds the islanders like to sign. I cannot understand why the league lets Wang get away with his salary cap shenanigans!
-
D.P —needs to go to the bridge for a while, bring up Poulin or Koskonin. Just brutal to watch. No other way to say it.
We need to be tougher. Not by fighting, that only gets us penalty’s, but stronger on the puck. And for God’s sake, can we please complete 1 pass??
Bruno—really nice kid, but does not belong anywhere near the N.H.L.
What the hell happened to hunter? If he does not at least play physically, goodbye!
Wang and Snow are taking on too much responsibility, it is obvious they need to hire True hockey minds to help them (not ex-plumbers, relatives, or the special needs kids from the community)!
Lastly, it seams that once a team plays us, it is easy to crack our game which means the “system” should be tweaked.
I am not sure about Gordon, never was, but I thought he deserved a chance with decent players. Bottom line–I don’t think he is much of a motivator. Quite boring. I think they should show video of Al Arbour to the team! -
Just got back in from the game. 4 hour drive from the outer banks to Raleigh to probably catch the only Islander game I will see this season. I left after the second period because it was embarrassing to be there. The 8 year old girl behind even called the Isles a bunch of wimps.
Notes:
+ RBC Center is fantastic, easy access to everything, parking is a sinch, and the place is gorgeous, only wish something will be on the island that is similar one day.
+ From the 5 goals I saw, DP clearly fumbled the first and the forth goal. He needs to do less and be sharper. He is definitely slow. I had a good view of him in the second.
+ For all his faults the team gave up to many odd man rushes, did not get back to the puck, couldnt generate any offense, and worst of all failed to connect again on a 5 -3 then 5 -4 for about 4 minutes.
+ I heard the make it 10 chant from the fans, who seemed to remember when the hammered the isles 9 – 0 in 2008.
+ Isle fans representing with some Islander Chants that were noticeable.
+ Did not see a Hartford Jersey anywhere.
+ The beer was good.
+ The whole game experience is much better than what the isles have.
+ Waste of 8 hours of driving for two periods of get pounded in th………. hockey.Ugh
-
Oh and no one line seemed to be cohesive at all.
-
I know DP has played terrible but let’s not place all the blame on him. This whole team looks sluggish and uninterested. Bring up some young guys from B’port who are hungry and want to play, like Martin has shown so far.
-
Psst…Brutal Gervais needs to go bye bye, Hello!!! Bring up Hamonic already!!!! Dress Gilles over Hunter he can go as well!!!
-
Adam Larsen?
Sean Couterier?
Ryan Nugent Hopkins?Let the debate begin!!!!
-
Here we go again !!!
-
I really appreciate work DP has done and the committment of the Isles to keep working with him.
That said he need to sort out his game in practice or the minors. The regular season, where every game counts is now the place to work out these types of problems. It might take a awhile and the team can ill afford to waste the little margin it has for error. -
I have posted this many times before: Gordon’s system and Snow’s method for bringing in talent simply do not jive. Last year, we were 2nd to last. Year before, dead last. Team still has: Martinek, Sim, Gervais, Weight, Hunter. I’m not saying they are problem players, but how in the world do they fit “the system?” Snow signs Jurcina: a big, slow, soft defenseman. This is like when the Jets say they are a ground and pound team and then throw the ball 40 times.
One or both of Snow and Gordon must go, or they need to sit down and talk about what works and what doesn’t. Parenteau stinks, but he’s cheap and worth a shot. I’d rather see him and Martin get time than Gillies and Weight. Should have kept Nino around, or instead drafted the guy Carolina got lol…
-
Either Gordon has a death wish or he is usins a little reverse psychology on Wang & Snow. Even Charlie Brown knew when to give up. It’s nothing personal, it’s just brutal seeing your team get hammered night in and night out. How Gordon allowed Rick into the rotation when Roli was hot was beyond me. He basically took a hot goalie and dropped him in a bucket of icewater for a week. Can’t figure how Roli is going to get his touch back either. If it gets much uglier this season, trade Roli off a hot streak, shut DP down and add his salary to the scrap heap and bring up the future goaltenders of this franchise. You can’t expect the “O” to be clawing back from 2-3 goals down each night because DP can’t handle the puck behind the net or in front of it either. I counted at least 3 bad goals on DP and DP alone tonight. I remember last year that Biron gave up one boner every game at the worst possible moment. DPs BGAA (Bad Goals against average) is worse than most goalies GAA. Rick needs to look in the mirror and due what’s best for everyone, become a broadcaster.
-
Here-here, Dan from Westchester! a goalie can make you believe you can win, or he can sap your will to win… its a shame the players and fans have to be subjected to this. why not let dp get right in the minors?
-
The guy misses two years and everyone expects him to be Jesus after 7 games. If I don’t play for a month and come back I let up 5 goals in a freakin beer league game. This is the NHL and he needs time to regain, if any other budding star would give his career to this franchise we would love it.
He was an All Star, and will hopefully regain that form. 50/50 platoon with Roli until he gets the timing back. He is learning to play the game again in a completely different way to avoid injury. It takes time, we haven’t done anything in 17 years as a franchise. Whats some more time for him to get it back?
-
I’ve been an Islanders fan for 25 years and needless to say, I’ve seen a lot of downright bad hockey. However, I can’t ever recall going from excitement to utter disgust in so short a period of time as in the past few weeks. Look at the L.A. Kings — they were just as bad as the Isles, missing the playoffs several seasons in a row, but now have the best record in hockey right now. The Carolina Hurricanes and the Tampa Bay Lightning have won Cups in recent years. Even Chicago finally broke their drought. Yet, here we still are waiting, always waiting for this organization to get it right when others have turned it around in just a few years. I’ll go to the grave supporting the Islanders, but a man can only take so much.
-
See the funny thing is that if we send DP to the AHL I don not think we will be above the cap floor and cannot play… that’s why we’re stuck with him up and we have to play him
-
And Sim gets a hat trick in BP … HA! Please send DP down there too.
-
This is a disgrace
-
Uniondale, we have a problem. Again.
5 losses in a row and counting, 2 blowout losses in a row, swiss cheese defense, non existent offense, forwards not backchecking, less than quality goaltending, coaching gaffes etc. etc.
Doesn’t the annual 8 or 9 game losing streak usually take place in December or January?
Looks like reality has set in even earlier this season.
With the lowest payroll, was anybody really expecting anything different?
-
Glad I DVRd the game so I can delete it. Sounds too brutal too watch. Send DP down if the cap allows. Hockey is a team game Ricky. Quit shaking the rust off while ruining the season.
-
Isn’t it obvious, the Islanders have a very slim chance of winning any game with DP in goal? Roli gives us a much better chance of getting a W. In addition, Wang is not going to invest a dime in the team and it shows. It would be best if he sold the team to someone who is really interested in being an owner in the the NHL; not his own personal gain. At the end of the day the Islanders are not very talented and we are stuck with this mess for the rest of the season. With that being said, dump Gervais bring up Hamonic and Joennsu.
-
easy to point the finger at the goaltender. people seem to forget who started the all star game a few years ago over brodeur, lundqvist, and miller? oh that is right, rick dipietro. without dipietro, last night would have been alot worse than 7-2. you will never hear his teammates or coaching staff rip him. why? because at this point, rick dipietro is this team’s only all star and they know it.
-
Alright, I may as well vent as well. My first problem is why Gordon and Snow haven’t realized that Tavares is a goal scorer. You don’t put him on with 2 other “goal scorers”. Gordon needs to clear waivers and be sent down. I think he was to technical and the players are just confused. Let them play hockey. I’m sorry, but all this review of tapes and crap….hockey is a game of read and react….it never plays out like the tape of last game. Time for a coaching shake up before it’s to late.
-
This is as terrible a two games as I’ve seen and I’ve watched just about every Isles game since 1988! This goes on for a couple more, I think it may be time for a coaching change. It seems like the coach has lost the players here. How else can you explain what has happened?? They were playing as a cohesive unit a couple weeks ago. Now? I don’t know WHAT that was last night. Rick let in a couple bad ones, (needs to be in bridge)but the rest? Not on him. There was no team last night. Just a bunch of I’s.
-
You could clearly see the despair in the defense eyes every time DP gave up a stupid goal.
They have no faith in him, it makes them play badly as well. They will not criticize him but the eyes do not lie. I doubt Gordon would have played him, but Wang loves DP.
With Rolo in goal they play much better even if they lose. -
Looks like they are a tad early for the usual miseaon debacle.
Have there been a more painful and just damn pathetic back to back games?? I am sure, just can’t focus right know on the past.
DP looks bad, really bad movement, position, and looks to be in discomfort on his lateral.
Team as a whole looks lost. Can we use lost??From a terrific start to know this?
Granted some injuries are at play here, but just 2 flat performances.
Why don’t we have a few words from our NHL guru owner Charley the tuna??
-
Glad I missed it. From the ridiculous draft day trade to get him, to the ridiculous 15 year contract, to the ridiculous goals he gives up….injuries, etc…………just the sound of his name…please RETIRE. DiPi was never a great goaltender, a somewhat good one for 2 years. But then again so was Hrudey, Fitzpatrick, Salo, etc. SEE YA RICK
-
to all you dp supporters using the All star game excuse.. does your memory delete all mentions of why rick started the game to begin with?
“Martin Brodeur was named to the East All-Star Team as a starter, but did not play in favor of resting over the break.”
Tim Thomas Replaced Brodeur and Vokoun was the 3rd goalie.
he wasnt starting based on his play, he started based on the fact that the better goalie didnt want to play in the game…
-
i agree 100% w/ the DP bashing. Nothing left to be said. His contract is costing the organization in more ways than one and it might end up costing Gordon his job. What about Doug Weight’s shot ?? it reminds of the pee wee’s that skate for 2 minutes between periods at the Colesium. WEAK !!! and he’s the captain ????
-
Well, another disgraceful performance from the worst “franchise” in all of sports. To start that puke in goal again last night after his performance in Philly just goes to show you how clueless this organization has been for the past 20 years. It’s obvious to the untrained eye that he can’t move. The worst part about this, he has over ten years remaining on the contract. For that contact alone, this organization should just fold. Meanwhile, their MVP last season sits on the bench wondering why he must watch some stiff. This team is so bad, but I am at the point where it just won’t matter any more.
-
I’ve been trying so hard to stay supportive, but the team has become unwatchable. There’s no dynamism or fire. The organization won’t invest in any quality assets. Why did I buy that stupid Center Ice package again??
Anyway, I’m getting ready to find another team. This just stinks.
-
It’s really disgraceful to pin this on DP. THE TEAM IS SUCKING UP THE JOINT NOW! Roli would do very little to help. If you don’t cover the opposing team in the defensive zone you will LOSE! I like Gordon but someone smack him, Bench Hunter and stop playing PA on the 1st line and on the 1st PP.
-
#86 – exactly! And if I recall, DP gave up a quick goal while talking on his mic during the game and also tweaked his knee during the skills.
Teams who do not have faith in their goalie, run around a lot trying to cover for him and get away from playing their game. This looks like what is happening now. Morale looks non existent as well.
-
Folks we will lose again tonight @OTT 3-0 with Roli in net… Its getting comical! 4-76-2… lol.
-
#66: These are the Bridgeport guys! A pathetic performance from the team, DP must be playing because Mgnt. is waiting for the next (& last) injury so they can do an insurance dump. No NHL Team but ours would keep playing DP. Orders from the Emperor, no doubt!
-
Two years after the the announced rebuild and it’s further south.
Opposing teams roll out the 4th line and back up goalie when Isles in town. Depressing actually.
DP’s knees are shot, lateral movement is gone.
I think he has good intentions but c’mon, he’s a has been.
I say bring the Finnish kid up. Maybe it will spark team, can’t get any worse
Mcdonald and Streit , sorely missed
Weight too old, Hunter too slow -
Last in the entire NHL in save% and 2nd to last in GAA, and Scott Gordon continues to try and get Ricky playing time? At what expense, the season? How much longer are we going to have to watch the de-resurection of Rick DiPietro?
-
DP was never a true All Star. I am sure he was picked because each team needed to be represented in the game. Until the new collective bargaining agreement expires 2012? We are stuck with him. Hopefully at such time there will be no guaranted contracts and he is done. That being said our defense is awful. No one is scared to run our goalies. With a D of Eaton Hillen Jurcina Martinek Etc last year we had Sutton. Put a fork in it we are done
-
DiPietro has been really bad this season. He has to stay in the net, stop interacting with the oppositions forwards and concentrate on STOPPING THE PUCK.
I’m curious about Gordon. How much longer does he have? Inconsistence is a problem with young team but compare the Islanders skill to the Rangers and we have them beat, but they never stop working. The Islanders look like they are not even on the ice for minutes of games. I’m a Gordon fan. I like his system, but I’m guessing that he is at the end of the rope. How will the Islanders consider for his replacement? Hitchcock? (Ugh) Therian? (Ugh Ugh) Just curious. -
bob is right, dipietro is statistically the worst goalie in the NHL. his .854 save percentage is 43rd out of 43 goalies who have played this season. dead last. his goals against average 4.21 is 2nd worst, 42nd out of 43, only ahead of san jose’s antti niemi.
meanwhile roloston is ranked 13th in goals against and 17th in save percentage.
-
Rob Schremp -4 almost -5 if it were not for his assist, in 13+ minutes of time; just brutal. The best stick handling skills mean nothing if you will not move your ass. A lot of very skilled players have not had a long NHL careers. However, a ton of grinders with big hearts have had very long careers. Hockey is a game played in units of 5. Teams that grasp this concept, win together. Teams that do not, lose 7-2.
-
DP hasn’t been the only problem the last 5 games but tonight he was one of the biggest. The reason we lost in Philly and Carolina is because we gave away momentum early from a stupid UNFORCED error by DP and they pounced all over us smelling blood. I’m sorry to say it but we aren’t mature or experienced or talented enough to overcome that yet.
If DP keeps his stick down, Timmonen doesn’t have a wide open net and Carter doesn’t score that awful goal through the 5-hole. Last night if he doesn’t make ANOTHER stupid decision to overplay the puck, Corvo doesn’t score.
I don’t blame DP for giving up 13 goals in the last 2 games because poor team defense contributed to the high output; but I do blame him for giving away 3 goals that handed momentum on a silver platter to our last two opponents, especially when both their guys AND ours know we’re struggling.
Gordon can scream all he want, that won’t bring confidence back to this team, good goaltending will. The only playing time he should consider cutting is DP’s.
-
88 is right on the button. DP has once again sucked the life out of this team. He doesn’t just have rust, he’s got barnacles too!
-
Its plain and simple…the team lacks heart.
-
Milburys stupidity still plagues this team. We traded Luongo to draft DP and are still paying for it. We need to rid the frachise of anything this idiot ever did.
-
The only way playing Rick up here makes sense is if they are hoping he gets hurt. Otherwise our management/coaching is worse than even I expected.
-
Yes, it was a destructive live chat…but almost everything said is true!!! I pay $$$ for center ice package, tickets to games in ATL, Nashville, Fla & Raleigh, bought my wife & Kids new jerseys, etc…and this is the GARBAGE they sell us??? Very Sad indeed…but will be in front of the TV tonite like every game-night for the past 37 years…Wish MGMNT cared as much as the Fans!!!
-
It’s not even just the Isles DP is messing up…Bport has a three-headed goalie monster because Lawson has to wait in the wings for when DP gets hurt again. The whole situation needs to be figured out before this season ends. Don’t feed us lines about competing for the playoffs and then trot out the worst statistical goalie in the league night after night just so he can “get his form back.” If this season’s about DP, and not winning, then say so and don’t get our hopes up.
-
DP = atrocious. Goalies are a dime a dozen at this point (see Niemi, Bryzgalov picked up off waivers, Philly rotation of no-names). No need to cater to him and the contract. A 5 year old can understand that.
But my main point is: Why is Gordon getting a pass? The “system” isnt working. The coach shows no fire, has nothing to say in interviews and I suspect the players are feeding off that lack of fire. We need the NHL version of Rex Ryan to at least instill some sense of urgency and energy behind the bench. Gordo has had a fair shot. Next…. -
I’m the biggest DP Supporter out there, I wear a new home blue #39 jersey to the home games in hope for his return to form
But…. We cant promote his future return to #1 form, at the expense of sacrificing the entire 2010-2011 season.
He’s probally best served as playing 20-25 games at BPort as their #1 goalie…
It’s clear that in 2010 Roli is 10x better than DP, this may not be the case in 2012, but it’s not 2012 now……
-
Furthermore, it’s not only DP, he’s not the only problem, it’s the “D” and the play of their depleted fill-in crew….
Roli + AMac + Milan >> DP + Bruno + Hillen
-
Wang still doesn’t understand Hockey and we all know he doesn’t know how to run a professional sports franchise…and doesn’t really care….all he cares about is real estate and business deals…that’s it …..he will not spend any more money than the cap floor.
I don’t know if I would go to the game on Saturday even if I got a free ticket…so Wang better come up with many cheaper than cheap ticket promos no will be paying to see this disaster
you have to spend some money to make money
-
As mentioned above, playing in front of a weak goalie really does affect your psych on the ice, as any of us who have played/play hockey would know. And in my mind that first goal against demoralized a fragile club trying to bounce back from a 6-1 stomping in Philly the other night. We all want DP to get back to form, but not at the expense of winning games and certainly not as a catalyst for a lost season.
Assuming Roloson plays at a minimum NHL level this evening, and the team responds with a better effort, I can’t see any justification for starting DiPietro on Saturday or even next Wednesday in Anaheim. You ride the goalie who gives you the best chance to win, plain and simple. As pointed out in CB’s Fanhouse article, look at Fleury in Pitt, Niemi in SJ, & Rask in Boston – they’re all riding pine because they’re being outplayed despite their “star” status, and that’s the way it should be.
-
I’m not defending Ricky and yes that first goal was DEFINITELY a little bit of a back breaker but did you guys watch the game!?!? Carolina tee’d off from the slot or the circles all night. 5 of those goals he had ZERO chance of saving and he actually made quite a few good save as well. This game was not his fault. Bottom line this team needs to look within itself and start playing with some pride!! They got blown out and beat up by Philly just to come out and give an effort like last night, unacceptable. It’s a priveledge to wear that NHL sweater and they better start acting like it. They haven’t finished a check or back checked or played with any intensity in two weeks and that more anything is unacceptable!!!
-
Does PAP know the meaning of a one timer??? Bailey, Comeau, and Moulson playing their hearts out for what…..7 games and thats it!?!? Weight has no business controlling our power play. He’s a shell of what he used to be, can’t distribute the puck soundly, and in turn gives up repeated odd man rushes. Mottau and eaton stay at home reliable dmen……really? Martinek been our only rock back there and even he is plummeting. Gordon is losing this team rapidly. Starts the same guy in net who got toasted for six the game prior? Terrible move. Then after the 3rd goal last night keeps him in w no time outs, no explosions, not a damn thing. That was not hockey last night…not professional at least. Oh yeah, get hunter and gervais the hell out of there. Think i saw bruno directly pass to a cane and i can run on the ice faster than hunter skates…..my grandmother could
-
I don’t understand why people keep saying the we are the very young team. Who on the current roaster is very young outside of Tavares and Bailey???
-
It was depressing to drive 2 1/2 hours to watch last night’s game. It was even worse driving back the same 2 1/2 hours wondering if this will be another sub-par year. I understand building a team takes time, but to see new talent commit the same errors and show the same poor judgements that we’ve become used to stinks.
With that being said, the Islanders will rebound soon and start playing the game they need to in order to grow and be successful.
I also hope there is progress with a new arena. Nassau County politicians are awful and killing the county. There are reasons many have left the Island and the lack of development is at the top of the list. Nassau County hasn’t gotten out the 1980′s. -
Everyone who is bashing everything about this team is rediculous and sad. It’s 12 games into the season, 12!!. The Isles are 3 points out of 8th and 6 points out of 1st in the conference. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and step away from the ledge. Jeeeez.
-
I cant stand DP..but it is not all is his fault. We are a second class team/organization. We are weak. Our forwards have been soft. Smallest in the league every year. The joke is on us
-
I attended the fiasco of game last in Raleigh. Nothing is worse then having a bunch of Southern fair-weather fans run their mouth to me about how bad my boys are doing.
Enough is enough. DP has to go. On at least 4 of the goals last night DP didn’t even make an attempt to save it. I’m not sure how much more evidence Gordan needs to make DP ride the pine the rest of the year. If they claim he “still has to knock of some rust” then this guy has a hell of a lot of rust to knock off and frankly I don’t have the patience to sit around and wait till that happen. Time to stop riding the “DP may come back” train.
-
Alot of DP hating on here… AND RIGHTFULLY SO!!! He has been downright awful and I’m sick of the rust excuses. If rust is his problem, lets have him shake off the rust up in the Bridge and let Mikko get the occasional start when Rollie (the #1 Goalie) needs a breather. Letting up soft goals and showing absolutely zero effort out there is only going to bring down team morale.
I’m not completely going to pin this all on DP though. Besides the first 5 mins of the game and the two goals, the team’s effort as a whole was lackluster. Where is the forecheck? Why so many turnovers? Besides Grabner, there isn’t one guy out there that can skate with a purpose.
jbassman – I cringed as well when Gervais passed it right to a Cane for a hard slapshot. He needs to file an application over at City Cellar. The NHL isn’t for him, and a winning hockey team doesn’t employ a player like him let alone start him on their injury plagued blueline. Bring up Dusty, Dylan or Katic at this point. I also cringed when Martinek went down for a few last night. This team isn’t getting any help with the injuries.
I don’t care if we lose games, but I at least expect to see these guys give their all out there. We put the effort in as fans to follow the team religiously, attend games and watch all the road ones on the tube. It should be an honor to play in the NHL, but for some of these guys (slow shot Hunter, Chef Bruno and DP) it seems like they’re minds are somewhere else.
On a positive I gotta say I love the tenacity Martin plays with. Hopefully he never dons a Sound Tiger uniform again.

DP SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ECHL Goalie at this stage.
