SNY POINT BLANK TV: TRAVIS GREEN
On Niederreiter, 1993 and “gutless puke”

by Chris Botta on December 30th, 2010 at 10:05 am

With the WJC in full swing, it was a good time to catch up with Travis Green, the assistant GM and assistant coach of Nino Niederreiter’s WHL team in Portland. Green also scored 70 points in a season for the Islanders, was a part of Al Arbour’s Kid Line the last time the franchise won a playoff series and was once memorably called a “gutless puke” by Mike Milbury. We talked about it all.

Comments on this video are welcomed. Heading out for the Winter Classic. See you down the road. Have a happy, healthy and safe New Year!

I have strong feelings for that ’93 team. I was 13, and had been watching the Isles closely for several years with my Dad telling me how great it was when the Isles were good. I had no idea until Brian Mullen’s OT goal in Game 2 vs the Caps, and the rocking crowds at the Coliseum into late May. For obvious reasons, I’m sure for many of us, we’ve been waiting 17 years to feel the same way we felt that spring, the feeling of camradermie, jubilation, and just complete giddiness that surrounded every playoff game. What a fun time that was. Also, my favorite all-time Islander – Steve Thomas – was a huge part of what made that team special. But there were so many more special players…#77 was the star, but Chicken Parm, Benny, Vlad, Kaspar, Derek King…while only Turgeon was a HOF’er, it shows that you CAN win with a ton of role players who play hard night-in and night-out. And it helped to have the greatest coach in NHL history.

    So many fond memories.

Great interview. I love the “gutless puke” quote. I must admit that I have used it over the years in various situations.

I remember Travis on the Capital District Islanders in 91-92 and was occasionally a member of the “Black Aces” a group of the scratched players. He was a good guy and I will always remember that team fondly and of course the 92-93 Isles.

#1- You build around guys like Turgeon, but those “role” players had serious skills. Ray, Benny and Derek King all scored 40 goals at some point I believe.

LOADS of character and personality on that squad and yes, they were prepped to play every night one of the best EVER in Al Arbour.

That 93 run meant a lot to all of us. Travis was easy to rout for, but so was Kenny.
It was the right move to send Nino back. Glad to hear that he is dedicated to making himself better. Too bad he isn’t a centerman, Travis was always great at faceoffs. I’m looking forward to watching Nino play this afternoon. Any talk of Reto Schappi? He reminds me of Mikko Koivu.

Awesome stuff here CB, thank you. Great to hear from Travis also.

Have to admit the Gutless Puke quote was one of my all-time favorites. Milbury may have traded away many HOFers, but at least he was amusing while doing it! (Ducks to avoid objects/abuse about to be hurled at me)
Green was one of my favorites while he was an Isle. 93 team was great. Oh, how I long for the days of watching winning Islanders hockey in April and May…….. How long will we have to wait for it?

the Kid Line – Dalgarno-Green-McInnis. That run was magical, too bad the Isles maintain no ties to their alumni….

Great memories.I went to all the home games at the coliseum that year. After Dale Hunter’s gutless cheap shot at Turgeon,I swear there was an angry mob that wanted to overturn the Washington Capitals bus.I do not remember, but I believe Wayne Merrick did color on the Islanders radio network. What a gentleman and a super nice man.He was always in the lobby of the Marriott and so,so accessible to all fans like myself after the home games. In the Montreal series after they won that one home game,Wayne looked me in the eyes and said,”We are going to win in Montreal !”I met Butch Goring in a bar after the clinching game {after Hunter’s hit on Turgeon],and I was besides myself and Butch was cool, and totally focused on what lied ahead the Pittsburgh Penguins. He said they could not worry about Turgeon, they must prepare for Pittsburgh with the men who are going to play and suit up.Chris thanks for the Interview and the memories.

I can t even believe I am saying this but I think Garth might be worse than Milbury at least he acknowledged that a fanbase existed and addressed them in the media and wasn t scared to make a move.

I, too, remember a lot about that 92-93 team (and the Capital District Islanders b/c I went to college in Albany). I remember holding an American flag out the car window after the Isles lone victory over Montreal in the playoffs. And I still carry around with me the ticket stub to the greatest game I’ve ever been to — Game 6 vs. Penguins — with Kasper manhandling Lemieux the entire night.

  16. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Ah, Game 6 vs the Pens. Dalgarno 25 seconds in, back and forth throughout, Uwe Krupp with the empty netter to seal the deal. Wow…just thinking about games like that keep me into the Isles, hoping it’ll get back to that, someday.

One other memory from 1993.In addition to being an Islander fan,I am a huge Formula One race fan.The weekend of June 13 1993,I was in Montreal,Quebec for that year’s Canadian F1 Grand Prix.On race day{6-13-93],during the pre race ceremonies Kirk Muller paraded around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in an open convertible with the Stanley Cup !!I wanted to PUKE !The Montreal Canadien fans were overjoyed and really getting whipped up into a frenzy and then the Canadian National anthem was played. These memories are Priceless !

    CB,

My son and I met Travis Green in 1998 at a practice when he was with Anaheim. Nice guy, I introduced him to my son who was about 5 at the time and Travis gave him his stick. We waited around after practice and got some autographs from Selanne and Paul Kariya. When Travis came out of the locker room he remembered us and signed the stick. We still have the stick…

Since he is assistant GM, maybe he’ll become our next GM, he can’t be any worse than the guy we have now.

    Great stuff.

The kid line was fun. The 93 run was magical. That team had a lot of talent with Turgeon, Hogue, Thomas, King and Ferraro. To think about how we fans treated guys like King who scored for us on the top line. Didn’t we have Tom Kurvers the PP specialist? Fitzgerald was a tenacious penalty killer. Good Times!

  21. avatar Phil says:

@#14…..The team were better under Milbury, and if these kids don’t plan out, the rebuild will go and on.

  22. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

I always liked Travis, especially when he played with Ziggy. They were fun to watch. Ray ferarro was magical in the playoffs, why oh why would they let their best playoff guy sign with the rags? I remember being at a wedding during game 7 pit & Isles, Me and 20 men gathered around the men’s restroom with my sony walkman( that’s how long it was), listening to overtime. Finally, we were forced to join the reception, but alas, the band announced the final score to the guests, to which the groom stood up and his first toast was–To the Islanders! GOOD TIMES, indeed!!!
