SNY POINT BLANK TV: PETER LAVIOLETTE
When the Islanders win, the fans respond

by Chris Botta on January 14th, 2011 at 9:08 am

The current Flyers and former Islanders head coach, who led the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup, spoke with SNY Point Blank earlier this week about his big break with the Islanders, the family atmosphere he attempted to build in 2001-02, the lessons he took from his New York experience and his respect for the Islanders’ fanbase.

Shame Peter L and Ted Nolan, 2 coaches who should still be our coach today. Would trade a good portion of our team to Philly to get him back, if that’s possible.

  2. avatar Eric Cup says:

Always liked Peter. Listening carefully to him, it seems like he needed to find his way here early on and that coaching here was really a 1st step for him that needed to be taken. Sounds like he thought he could have done things a little better. I would like to have heard his take on the reasons why he was let go.

  3. avatar tom in nj says:

Biggest mistake the Islanders made letting him go. Even worse that Don Maloney as the the Islanders GM (ugh!)

Peter was a winner from the very beginning and he was exactly what the ISles needed at the time. BUT as always, the ISlanders doing what they do best…screw it all up.

  4. avatar Bob E. says:

my favorite coach in post arbour era. We can thank Yashin for getting rid of him. This guy is a Winner. One cup aleady and philly in finals last year.

  5. avatar Real hockey fan says:

    .. Nice interview CB

.. Laviolette was a good coach and that team was SO entertaining and so much FUN to watch, they could skate, play D had OSgood in net and were a mean physical team to play against, guys (Webb, Cairns, Scatchard, Peca, etc), just a tough gritty team, that playoff series against toronoto was AMAZING! my fav team from the 2000 decade

.. What was the reason they fired him again mad mike? SRSLY? Ted Nolan is another guy who should be coaching! :-(

  6. avatar Bob Bassen says:

    Great stuff as always, CB.
It takes the right coaches, with the right players with the right organization/management at the right time to have great success. Unfortunately, it’s gonna be a while before this organization/management team is in the *right* place.
I wonder if you will be conducting a similar interview with Scott Gordon in a few years?

  7. avatar Kaszycki's Krew says:

Evidence that Milbury at least got *something* right. Peter has proven himself as a big time NHL coach – and he was good for the Islanders…….

  8. avatar Russel Ginart says:

Yes CB did PL say to you (off the cuff) why he was let go as NYI HC?

  9. avatar orngfan says:

laviolette was the best thing that has happened to this franchise since mike milbury walked in the door and we PISSED him away! he should still be our head coach!

  10. avatar Jeff says:

I never understood his firing. What a mistake!!

  11. avatar John says:

Didn’t Lavi get sandbagged in the teams exit interviews that led to his dismissal. At least that’s what I recall from Al Hahn’s articles and online q and a’s of the time.

  12. avatar Uncle Deuce says:

Agree with many that letting Laviolette go was a horrible decision, but I think it’s the worst one they’ve made in the Milbury/Wang/Snow years. Nolan was a great coach too, but Lavi got the fans invested in the team again. He was never questioned or booed or loathed by the fans, just by Yashin and malcontents. When they chose Yashin and his 10-year deal over Lavi, that is when what they rebuilt began to crumble into what we have now, Nolan’s miracle playoff berth job, notwithstanding. If Philly ever fired him, I’d love to see a sequel back on LI. Good man, winning coach.

  13. avatar Kevin says:

It is going to hard to find another coach like that.

  14. avatar beatlebailey says:

CB why do you tortue us with these interviews with successful islanders alumni :-) What’s next coffee with Luongo and Chara with a cameo by Spezza and Gaborik?

  15. avatar TURNUPTHEHEAT says:

As long as Wang remains owner, all credible coaches will not come near this organization.

  16. avatar Stumpy32 says:

I was thinking the other day that we got lucky with Nolan, because, frankly, he had no other options and was grateful for another chance. But aside from him, we aren’t getting a credible coach, GM, anything into this cluster**** of a situation.

The team does seem to be coming together, but the concern for all of us is how far can they go with a staff of limited skill and experience?

I wish that we could, after the season, clean out the hockey staff and bring in a real GM who could hire their own head coach. What a shot of confidence that would give the fans. Dare to dream, I guess. Dare to dream.

  17. avatar And so it goes says:

What a concept WIN and the fans respond
Someone send Chuck a batch of fortune cookies with this tidbit stuffed inside

  18. avatar Jerky says:

Good interview – wish we could get him back! I’ll never understand the thought process of letting Laviolette go and replacing him with Stirling. I’d like to see a coach who is tough on his players yet respects them, and show passion and fire on the bench when necessary toward the players and referees. I haven’t seen that combination for the Isles in a long time.

  19. avatar Jim Clark says:

Getting rid of Lava was the second biggest Milbury mistake after the draft Milbury-trade Luongo disaster. Let’s see how long he lasts in CheeseSteak-town-the formerWhalers ditched him too.

  20. avatar KennyJonsson says:

good timing, i just watched the bates penalty shot game last night on the islanders website. man that building was rocking, can’t wait to get back to the playoffs and show everyone what this fanbase can do

  21. avatar Phishstyx says:

    God did I hate Yashin

  22. avatar 19 Isle in NJ 22 says:

    Nice piece there CB!

Some good insight from Lavy about his coaching style … but lets not forget. There is a big difference between today’s Islanders and the team he was given that made the playoffs. That just goes to show the huge amount of talent Garth needs just to get in the conversation.

JT and the rest of the youth corps … no matter how talented they are … still need some huge catalyst types of players to make the Isles a contender.

I like how Lavy mentioned that every team needs every type of personality in the room. Does that sound familiar?

  23. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Too bad there wasnt’ IPB back in 2000, to vent our fustrations. I still have a deep hatred for Toronto after that playoff series.

  24. avatar Staten Islander says:

Laviolette is gone and Yashin is still getting paid. Where is the justice? Oh yeah, Laviolette got 2 trips to the finals and a cup…..WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?

  25. avatar MIKE says:

CB – Id love to see a Jankowski phone call interview or in studio interview where he blows the roof off Wang and Snow. Fans deserve to know what goes on inside the People Republic of Wang. They obviously hate you. You wont be back in that locker room as long as those 2 clowns run the show. The true iSLES FANS are begging you – get nasty!

  26. avatar BIS says:

I gotta second #24. CB- we love these interviews but it seems like there is a lot of repetition when it comes to Islanders management. After countless mistakes and blunders to people such as Laviolette and others I think us fans would like to hear some candid frustration towards Wang. Witter was a great interview because he was candid and told you something a lot of people would not.
