9:40 pm: While Evgeni Nabokov still hasn’t shown up and has been suspended by the Islanders, Doug Weight doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

A source tells Point Blank that Charles Wang and Garth Snow have had discussions with Weight about staying with the franchise in a hockey operations job after this season, when the 40-year-old center is expected to retire. Injuries have limited Weight’s playing career as an Islander to seasons of just 53, 36 and 18 games (so far in 2011-12). Over his NHL career, he has 1,033 points in 1,238 games.

Weight’s new role would likely be on the coaching staff of the NHL club as an assistant, or working with Garth Snow as an assistant general manager or director of hockey operations.

After two decades in the NHL, and with a young family on Long Island, it’s difficult to envision Weight spending six months a year on the road in Europe and throughout North America as the team’s scouting director. However, he is a very well-respected man and is connected in the industry.

Weight has also dabbled this season during his time on the injured list as an unofficial assistant coach, half-jokingly taking credit on “NHL Live” yesterday for devising a power play scheme that led to a few goals on the Islanders’ Western road trip in early January.

Of course, you don’t need a source to observe his increased role as a voice for the Islanders with each of his three seasons. Weight has arguably been the best spokesman the franchise has had since the days of William A. Torrey. Weight has vigorously expressed optimism over the last two seasons that the Islanders were a playoff team. In a few recent interviews – including this one with Brian Compton of NHL.com – he has voluntarily defended the commitment of Wang to the franchise, its players and its fans. Here’s Weight to Compton on Wang’s critics:

I find it humorous. We all know where these reputations come from. If Charles had a Stanley Cup or had a free agent or two come his way, things would change quickly. I believe that’s going to change. Charles is great. I’ve played for a lot of owners, and he’s first-class. He’s very confident. He just wants to learn the game and the system and he wants to talk about it with everybody. He wants everybody’s families to be comfortable.

He wants to win. Hopefully that can happen for him. I’ll probably be gone when it does, but hopefully it can happen for him. I heard everything before I got here, and it couldn’t be more different. The respect level he has is very high. It’s too bad. We can’t worry about those things, and I know he doesn’t. He goes out and does his thing.

Agree or disagree with the captain’s views, he appears to have one fact wrong. Weight will be here in the coming seasons. It’s just a matter of finding the right role for him.

My reaction to the news of the suspension of Nabokov: if this works out for the Islanders, they could have a good goaltender under contract for the 2011-12 season for less than $600,000.

*

The Islanders, minus Mark Streit and most of their defense, played tonight against the Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin-less Penguins. The game became a battle of French Canadien goaltenders. Kevin Poulin was magnificent in stopping 30 of 31 Pittsburgh shots on goal, but Marc-Andre Fleury had a 29-save shutout for a 1-0 victory. Craig Adams scored his third goal of the season mid-way through the third. The Islanders did not generate enough offense by getting bodies to the front of the net, although Kyle Okposo hit a post and Fleury made some strong saves.

The game was also highlighted by a pair of spirited first period scraps between Travis Hamonic and Tyler Kennedy and Zenon Konopka and Arron Asham. Although the television broadcast did not make much of it, it sure looked like Matt Martin was assessed a two-minute minor for a legal, hard hit with six minutes left in the game.

Most of all, Poulin’s play made it seem like the Islanders have had an embarassment of riches in goal. They have Rick DiPietro. The departed Dwayne Roloson continues his outstanding season in Tampa Bay. And they have the rights to Evgeni Nabokov, even if he is in solitary.

Hiring Weight for a “real” job in the organization would be a small step in the right direction.

  2. avatar purify00 says:

has anyone seen Bailey? oh wait i just found him on the back of my milk carton.

  3. avatar Mikamakela says:

I have to respectfully disagree about weight. Isles have been nhl doormats since he arrived. Of course he kisses Wangs butt, who else is trying to give Weight a job as player/captain. Weight is smart, he realized by watching snow /dipietro/ milbury that wang is impressionable, can be wined and dined and wang will give his buddies jobs for life. Last place be damned.

  4. avatar hyedray says:

Love the idea of Weight staying on. He has been a good cheerleader. Just please — don’t make him the head coach. Let him come in as an assistant.

CB: Can you elaborate on the Isles and Nabokov from the standpoint of the rules should the “toll” Nabokov for next season.

    1) Do they get him for the entire season?

    2) Can Nabokov opt to stay home even next season or will he not have that choice next year?

  5. avatar stopthepain says:

#2, I was going to say the same thing. It’s amazing how poor his play was tonight. In fact, Bailey’s whole line was borderline inept. I lost count at 5 giveaways for Comeau. I wonder why the play of that line has deteriorated so much…

  6. avatar BB says:

More important, when are we getting part two of the Mike Milbury interview?

  7. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

Sure looks like Poulin is gaining valuable experience in the NHL. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get 30 more games of experience this season. Like the Weight idea, shoulda been done before this season since everyone with a brain knew his hockey career was over.

  8. avatar Greg says:

After that interview on NHL Live it seemed very evident that he would be picked up the isles front office or somewhere in the organization. He may not have it on the ice anymore, but he has the voice and face of the islanders off the ice. Hopefully his induction into the front office or in the organization can help bring in other players. Sell them Doug, Sell them.

Purify, hilarious, that was really funny.

Good effort by Poulin tonight, unlucky on the post. Grabner again had a great effort, such a great pickup cannot say enough about the kid in his rookie seasons, shunned by two other teams. Should come out of the gates strong next season.

  9. avatar lorne says:

Good move having Weight stay in the organization. I am sure he wants to stay here to finish raising his family.

  10. avatar Ice Girl Dad says:

Great Idea to have Weight in a front office position. the perfect spokesperson to give a players perspective to pending UFA’S. Intense hard hitting game tonight. Martin has a bulls eye onhis sweater. Stupid penalty by him in the offensive zone. “Won’t you come home Josh Bailey,Won’t you come home”

  11. avatar Staten Islander says:

CB, they might have a very good goaltender signed for next year, but it’ll be one that won’t or doesn’t want to play here. I think Snow was 100% in the right and I hope he lets him sit for the rest of the year and then cuts him loose because at that point they should just move on.

This game was like trench warfare tonight, very hard fought, I agree with what you said about the Martin call, I also thought that that goalie interference call in the 1st period was bogus as well. Poulin was the reason that this game was this close, and they were still a hit post away from getting a point.

Amac I thought had a strong game and Chef Bruno was his usual brutal self. Grabner i now expect to break way from everyone every time he has the puck.

What happened the the Josh Bailey that we saw in the last half of last year and the beginning of THIS year? I REALLY miss him. Not ready to give up on him yet.

  12. avatar Bob E says:

you knew weight would have position in organization after he retired. he seems to love LI.

sucks we couldnt bury puck tonight. It felt to me that Pitt w/o crosby and malkin seemed like they were the outmatched team. one chip in goal was difference. had KO scored my feeling is we would of blew it wide open.

  13. avatar Ethan K says:

Good. I wanted Doug Weight to be around, but not on the ice. Good guy, but his career as a player is over. Could he maybe take over the spot that Trottier had?

  14. avatar Bruce says:

CB – can they fine Nabokov for every game or every day he is not with the Islanders. just think of the money they’d save when he actually arrives!!!

  15. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Should I be worried that without Malkin and without Crosby, the pens are still a better team than the Isles?
If Weight is an Assisstant Coach next season, can they still make his salary work against the Cap? Weight has been the lone voice for the Isles over the past 2 season. I’ve heard him say that he’d like to see how good this team would be if everyone was/stayed healthy. Is there any word on when he might come back?

  16. I hope to see Weight sitting at the Draft Lottery with a big smile on his face when the Isles ‘win’ the first overall pick for the 2nd time in 3 years.

Is it me or has the Martinek-Hillen pairing been on the ice for seemingly every goal allowed recently? It’s sad when Gervais-Reese tandem outplays you.

  17. avatar Anthony L says:

Weight is a class act and a good hockey man. He’d be a welcome addition to either the coaching staff or the front office.

  18. avatar Jim Clark says:

Gee CB, if you are going to include Roloson as an Islanders goalie, then shouldn’t you also include Luongo?

Weight is a good guy who had a good playing career. But if he honestly thought the last two years that the Islanders were a playoff team, then he should not be allowed in any decision making.

Anybody think that Nabokov is going to join the Islanders after tonight’s dismal offensive performance?

  19. avatar Steve says:

Good to see Doug Weight staying with the organization after his playing days are over. Also nice to hear Poulin playing very well.

  20. avatar Isles72 says:

Does Doug Weight have the guts to retire and walk away from the game before the season is over? This man has held onto the “C” for the past two seasons while sitting in the pressbox sipping water. To me, this is a travesty. It’s great that Weight is going to the front office. Though he should have given up the “C” a long time ago.

  21. avatar michael says:

Kevin Poulin Looked like an NHL stud tonight. We should play this kid everynight! I still say this team is stockpiled with stars. Nino, DeHann, Hamonic, Tavares, Okposo, Grabner, Poulin, Moulson, Streit, Jurcina, Nielson, and yes even Baily! We will be strong real soon! Patience is what we need!

  22. avatar justin says:

This team was out hit 29 to 21 thats what lost the game, Comeau and Martin had more than half the team hits. Being competative is one thing but you will never be a playoff team without tough hitters. Martins hit was clean and beautiful, called by a neutral ice ref 70 ft away, the corner ref say nothing but a tough hit. When the whole team gets tough you win too many skaters avoiding contact.

  23. avatar ERIKA TENCIC says:

Yes #21, patience, guidance, and one or two solid upgrades in the off season should work just fine. It is obvious that Poulin will be an excellent goalie, if we can get the players to score 2 or 3 goals, they will win. Not a bad game, just some erratic shooting. I would love for them to take target practice. Seems like good chances are going to waste. Let Mike Bossy teach a class on shooting the puck.
As for Nabakov–Who cares, I don’t want him here, now or ever!–Move on people he has not been good for a few years now, and frankly, I like the kids on this team, don’t ruin it by bringing Prima-donna-Kov into the equation!

  24. I still really can’t understand why you wouldn’t put Grabner on the wing with Taveras. His natural speed would create plenty of open space for Taveras to hide in, which is when he’s at his best.

  25. avatar Marc says:

Maybe Weight will be named GM and Snow will be backup goalie / coach? Just joking. Kind of.

When does the draft lottery countdown start?

  26. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

So will it be the CoutNugHopLars countdown?

  27. avatar robert says:

i have my doubts that weight will really retire after this season. if he did, how will snow sign him so the isles wil be able to hit the cap floor next year? however, presuming he really does retire, it would make sense to add him as some type of assistant. it is funny though when weight says how much wang is so highly respected in the nhl when it is the complete opposite. in that sense, he would fit right in with the 3 ring circus. i hope though he can bring at least a little respectability to the organization since he is highly regarded in the nhl. regarding tonight, no offense. what else is new? are wang and snow going to improve the offense by trading moulson for a number 2 draft pick? will wang and snow spend a little more next year to help the offense? i highly doubt it. also what propaganda will snow say tomorrow before the game? if he doesnt address the moulson issue then what ever he says will be miningless.

  28. avatar beachchica says:

    Poulin is a gem!

  29. avatar justin says:

You may be over doing this Grabner breakaway thing, the team is throwing everything up the middle when he is on the ice, if they did that with any player the result would be the same. Grabs makes zero contact with anybody on the ice and always has his speed up because of it. The teams that cut him new he had speed but could throw cherry passes to anyone plus get contact from them.

  30. avatar The Pork Chop Express says:

1.Good for Weight. We can use his leadership on the management team.
2.Poulin played very well which is very encouraging.
3.I believe Matt Martin’s call was weak. This kid does now have the reputation of being a boarder so he has to be careful.
4.Hey Coach. It is time to mix your 2nd and 3rd line. Both of them are not scoring. I will continue to say Bailey needs to play center!!! I am still puzzled why they refuse to play him there. I think the line of Grabner,Bailey and Okposo has potential. Those players’ skills sets compliment each other. Right now Bailey is getting zilch on the wing. Schremp cannot pass that way. The 3rd line should be comeau, nielsen, schremp. Again I believe those players compliment each other. Schremp pretty much sits on the wing side anyway. Nielsen passes well to both sides of the ice. Please make the change!!!

  31. avatar justin says:

Pork chop, when you hit as hard as martin does everything is magnified. He is the haedest hitter in the league, 172 hits nearly 100 more than any other isle. Boarder? no he has launched guys 30 ft from the boards and has been called for that, he just hits so hard, he launches guys. Usually the out of position ref makes a bad call as in the case of tonight They just see the devestation his hits leave..

  32. avatar TURNUPTHEHEAT says:

I believe Charles Wang is one of the finest owners in the NHL. He is a winner. He’s first class. Can I now get a job in the Islander front office?
If you stroke Charlie’s ego enough, you can wind up in the front office too.
Now you see the type of people in the organization. It’s a bunch of suck ups.
Once again we fans are left with another Wangtastic season.
Who needs playoffs? We have draft parties.

  33. avatar Turgeon77 says:

Adding Doug Weight to this JOKE of an organization would be a big mistake..just like naming our backup goalie to Gm. But then again, when your organization is this horrible..I guess you can’t make it much worse. Or Maybe we can?? All we need to complete the picture is a good scouting director…I was thinking maybe Richard Park?
Either way I’m looking forward Snow’s State of the Union Address tomorrow when he tells everyone we are still “rebuilding”…we are struggling due to “injuries”..and we will make a play-off push shortly. s”NO”w Clue

  34. avatar TURNUPTHEHEAT says:

Hey Turgeon77…How dare you call this organization a joke? You are giving them way too much credit.

  35. avatar LIT says:

lot of positives tonight.. Grabner is turning out to be a very exciting player.. Poulin is gonna be a star.. Hamonic getting stronger.. etc.. lots of good things happening.. a few more players and this team can stop being the joker on tsn..

  36. I was at the game. Gorgeous new arena, I can only wish the new arena and more importantly, winning team is on the way for us as well.

The crowd is awfully quiet, but fully focused on the game. I prefer the wildness that goes on at the barn. I sat next to a guy from Long Island as well…he was wearing a Kaspar Penguins jersey, oh the days…

Poulin look great! Martin seems to get whistled for a questionable one at least once a game. I gotta see Hamonic’s fight, not sure what started that.

Comeau was hot but he’s playing on a line with 2 ghosts right now. Congrats to Weight!

  37. avatar Turgeon77 says:

Yeah I figured I would take it easy on them since they are “trying their hardest”. The words I was really looking for were …atrocious..abhorrent…and dreadful

  38. avatar BIS says:

The most eye-opening part of this story is Doug’s quote about how people view Wang and this franchise:

“I heard everything before I got here, and it couldn’t be more different. ”

My question would be, What was he hearing?? Because from almost everybody that’s spoken on this blog Charles Wang’s reputation is nothing but solid, even though I think most knowledgeable fans know otherwise.

  39. avatar Walt says:

Nabokov should be made an example of and suspended for next year also. Nabby look up “professional hockey player” you dope.

  40. avatar Eric says:

I agree with #12 if Okposo does not hit the post there and scores the Islanders take a 1-0 lead, maybe get 1-2 more and win the game. He beat Fleury on that nice shot and nice set up by Martin. Just was one of those nights where the opposing goalie playd well and you could not get a bounce. Remember, you might not see it all the time, but Fleury is a top flight goalie. He won game 7 on the road in the finals against a superior team. As for Weight, I knew it and said it over the summer that the Islanders gave him a contract for him to stay in the organization. They knew he was done. And I said it was a good move while others disagreed due to Weight’s age, but I liked the move because it keeps a class act and future hall of famer in the organization. I expect Guerin to either work for the Pens or Islanders.

  41. avatar Will C. says:

Poul’s looked amazing. Get him to the “A” ASAP. Let him develop right!

  42. avatar Steve M says:

The Isles looked great tonight. It’s hard to tell if they will soon be a contender or just another bust. One game they look amazing, the other they look terrible. Who knows, hopefully things will turn positive soon. Poulin looked great, but we need to send him down to the Bridge before anything bad happens.

  43. avatar Ryan says:

Doug Weight as Director of Hockey Operations would be perfect, he’s a very well respected person in the game, who knows what it takes to win at this level.

  44. avatar Pride-N-Passion NYIHockey says:

Other then the Kid in net, another yawner.
    Wake me up,
when they land a productive /formidable/ offensive&defensive established NHL presence.
    Until those 2Pro’s are found????
Its just more patronizing BS from a last place Organization that has not won a playoff series in what is now 18 years!
10 of those years under the reign of Charles Wang!

As for the former World Class American Hockey Player Dougie Weight,
I loved ya in the 96′ world cup that summer the American’s assembled one helluva rooster will never forget that bunch.
(ultimately winning it on Canadain ice)
    unfortunately that was long ago.
Lets hope Weights contributions off the Ice are much more then he gave the Islanders on the Ice during the last few years.
I’m sure they can not be any worse!
Oh well, halfway through yet another miserable Hockey season on Long Island.

    P.S. Okposo maybe rusty understandable
yet still see no real veteran leadership in terms of a physical presence on the Ice or at least in a forechecking role??
Still do not see enough to consider this kid/ Now Full Grown Man as a
    Viable Captain of the
    New York Islanders.
My hoperemains that this changes soon?
Lets Go Isles Lets Go Islanders!!

  45. avatar Will OC says:

@29…Grabner is far from a cherry picker and the the Isles Dmen can barely make the breakout pass to their own halfwall let alone shoot 100 foot passes to Grabner in the neutral zone. Grabner’s play has been outstanding in all three zones if you’ve watched him closely. He’s been trusted on the penalty kill which I never would have seen when he first joined this team. He’s showing why he was a first round draft pick and Florida is without a doubt kicking themselves for not giving this guy a little more time to prove himself and get comfortable. If you did the math I bet he has averaged the most points per time on ice for this team. Can’t figure out why the first line has been untouchable from juggling because I think Grabner has definitely earned the right to play with Tavares

  46. avatar Pride-N-Passion NYIHockey says:

One last painful, yet realistic observation….
    #41They looked great tonight????
I guess we as beatin’ down fans of a once (long ago) proud organization have learned to to be satisfied with minimalistic results.
Pittsburgh played with out Crosby or Malkin?
Other then a shot off the crossbar no one stepped up to get the kid in net at least a point.
We lost they lost to a very average Pittsburgh team when they are without there 2 superstars in the lineup.
Sorry love The NYIslanders just hate losing year after year.
    Tonight shut-out & Beat Again!
    NYI 15-26-7-37 pts/29th out of 30 teams.
    Reality check 101! ;)
Lets Go Isles…. Lets Go Islanders!

  47. avatar isles316 says:

Why do I feel like he’ll be the head coach.

  48. avatar KaiserVanIslander says:

    If I was Snow

Hire a coach ASAP!!Big name coach
Why wait until next season? we are keeping most of our guys lets start to get the system in place.

    Sign M.M. 3-5 yr deal

Trade 1sr round pick for an under 30 yrs old goal scorer. Not a washed up vet. Like Parise!! We’ll be fine trading the pick we have a good farm system.

Spend money July 1st… over pay if you have to. Get a few guys on board together. Let them know who’s coming so they will sign. 2 good wings and two solid D men all to 3-4 yr deals.

Nabokov see’s we have a real team now he plays.

We could make some real noise. We have plenty of money to spend sign them all until 2015 and see what we can do. Give our kids a taste of victory!

  49. avatar AFIsle says:

WHOS GONNA BE THE NEXT CAPTIAN!!!!!

  50. avatar brian says:

I’ve seen it so many times through the years….. kids like Poulin and Hamonic are called up, they play well, the fan base calls them future stars, and they eventually disappoint and do not come close to expectations. Just look at Post 21 up above.

  51. avatar Gary9-19-22 says:

Hiring Weight for a position with the team is smart. We need ambassadors that speak well of the owner, franchise, Long Island and such. Hiring ANYBODY as an asst GM that is not qualified is just down right STUPID!

I run a group of 40 IT people that have a wide variety of skills. I dont promote a great developer to be an asst because he has never dealt with customers. I’m just setting him up for failure and that’s what Snow and Wang are doing if the make Dougie the asst GM.

If he wants to be a GN somedaybthen give him a role that is small and teaches him the aspects of the GM role that he needs to learn.

Wang’s loyalty is great, his execution of that loyally SUCKS!

We need a draft guru, we need a player development guy, we need qualified bodies on the ground looking for the diamond in the rough (can anyone say POULIN). We need a cap expert.

How about getting someone on board that can get us some press besides an exiled Chris Botta.

How about a few players that can mentor and lead out young guns so they can reach their potential and become winners??!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  52. avatar Steve K says:

    Trent Hunter?

  53. avatar onesinceforty says:

Which Nabokov has contributed more to the Islanders? Evgeny or Dimitri? For those of you that don’t remember, we gave up JP Dumont for another Nabokov that did not show up to Long Island. Well, I wish that one did not show up either. He was AWFUL! Maybe we should get Kabanov to place one of those recruiting phone calls to Evgeny????

  54. avatar Jack says:

Weight said “I’ll probably be gone when it does”. I think he meant he’ll probably be dead by the time it happens.

  55. avatar Hollywood says:

Does anyone really care about What Weight does. I Know I don’t care. As for the game, Cap needs to seperate Bails and Schremp. Bails played well with Frans and Grabner. Schremp and Comeau haven’t played well at all since Baily was put there. Whoever said that Grabner is afraid of contact isn’t watching these games. Grabs has been going to the dirty areas from day one. He’s been the most consistent player for several weeks. Poulin was fantastic, they should have beat the Pens. Coach was right, not enough crashing the net.

  56. avatar Bob Bassen says:

The call on Martin was horrible but unfortunately this/that is the NEW NHL.
Hamonic sending Cooke flying with a clean shoulder to shoulder mid-way through the third was a thing of beauty.
    I Iike that kid!

Weight getting a chance to swap a players uniform for a business uniform with the team is not really surprising. He does seems like a good guy, respected around the league and I’m sure will be an asset in whatever position he lands. But let us remember that not too long ago Bryan Trottier and even Pat LaFontaine were members of the front office and Billy Jaffe and Chris Botta were also part of the *team* sooooooo…I’ll wait and see on this one.
    All good.

  57. avatar jon from nj says:

How about we hire someone with experience?

  58. avatar mark p says:

    1) Any thoughts on the Parentaeu crashing the net Penalty?
    2) Charles sure does have his favorites
3)Seemed like Deb Placey was suggesting Weight as coach next season after the interview.
4A)If Isles do try to enforce the Nabakov contract next year, do they still have the same trade restrictions next year?
4B) If Isles enforce the Contract, Will KHL or other European team not recognize the contract and sign him anyway?

  59. avatar BIGSAVE77 says:

Love to see Poulin have another great game I agree with Erica and Michael a couple of more pieces and we will be on our way. By the way Erica love the “prima-donna-kov” reference. Great move Garth in picking him up and then subsequently suspending him. Love Grabners speed if only he knew how to score.

  60. avatar cjcb says:

Blah Blah Blah Blah. Sick of hearing BS from this organization. Enough excuses just get it done already. Move do what ever you have to do to put together a legit NHL franchise. 75% of the guys on this team belong in the minors or should have had time in the minors. I cant tell anyone how sick and tired i am of listening to any talk associated with this team as its almost always negative. Seriously if u cant build here go somewhere u can just figure it out and let the world know, NOW!!!! Guys quit, guys dont show up, its a country club, WTF is going on??????? Sell the team Wong, i dont care about you making millions or billions dont make your problem our problem. If you bought the team to bring it back to its glory i sure would hope you had an alternate plan to your mini manhattan.

  61. avatar streit02 says:

I like the move keeping Weight with the organization. He has a good voice in the hockey community and brings a little respectability. Now if we just couldve handled the Lafontaine situation differently. Its funny with all the talk of teams decimated with injuries. Penguins, Rangers, St. Louis etc… Although they are still winning games excuses are being shelled out for them all the time. Now imagine if one of these teams lost their whole d-corps. People always mention the loss of Okposo and Streit, but seem to forget that the Isles have been playing with ONE defenseman for the majority of the season who was scheduled to be on the opening roster. Besides AMAC and thank god for Martineks relatively healthy season because these are the only 2 dmen in the lineup right now who were penciled in on the opening roster and even both of them have missed time. You have Streit, Eaton, Jurcina, Mottau all out for extended amts. of time. Truth of the matter is, we dont know how good this team can be because over the last 2 years we havent been given the chance due to injuries. We need to get healthy, get a coach who demands accountability and see what this team is capable of.

  62. avatar Nyslefan says:

CB, could you comment on Don Meehan’s role in the Nabokov situation? Specifically, does this sour his dealings with Snow concerning his other Islander clients (like Moulson)? Also, did Meehan not counsel Nabokov about the possibility of a non-playoff team claiming him through waivers after he signed with Detroit?

  63. avatar Y2G says:

I’m actually optimistic about this one. Yyzerman and Lemeieux both did great in their roles for the Lightning and Pens so Weight can definitely have success. Any credibility we gain back is a plus and Dougie can help. Although I wonder how this rebuild can continue without a director of amateur scouting. As Espn.com said the Courterier, Nug-Hop, Landeskog debate got thicker since an article was written that scouts may have seen so much of Courterier that they are picking him apart unjustifiably. Nug-Hop seems like a far better version of Bailey but his body won’t be nhl ready for a number of years.

  64. avatar Isles81 says:

They have no room for Trotts, an Islander LEGEND but will find a spot and money to pay a guy who has done nothing for this team. That is a disgrace!

  65. avatar islesfan8111 says:

I wish weight would retire right now-and become a scout.

  66. avatar Cold Spring Harbor says:

Grabner is this generation’s Bob Bourne. Scores about one out of every five breakaways but it is always breathtaking to watch. Doug Weight would be a good first class move in any capacity.

  67. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

Justin (@22) brings up a good point, another prblem with “Bettman’s NHL”. How often do we see the far ref making calls that the ref who’s right on top of the play let’s go Does the home plate ump make the call on a steal of 2nd? Does an NFL ref call pass interference in the secondary?

You want a two ref system..fine. Just define the area of responsibilty of each!

#53. Thanks for ruining my bagel and coffee by bringing up Dmitri Nabokov. Just another in the long line of stiffs that Milbury lusted for. Amazing how this jerk gets so much air time as an analyst! Doesn’t anyone check his resume?

  68. avatar JT says:

If putting Weight in the front office will get us some clout I am all for it. As far as the game goes, I don’t understand why the KO-Nielsen-Grabner line was not out more towards the end of the game. Capuano puts out the Schremp line in clutch situations and on PP-2 and right now they are just not getting it done. The one who is getting the short end of the stick is Grabner. He is one of the hottest players on the team right now, and not getting PP time? I don’t get it. Also, Capuano’s comment that he was thinking of the Schremp line as the 2nd line? I think they are clearly the 3rd.

  69. avatar TuxTax says:

Theres been far too many 2 minutes for “Checking” calls against the Isles this season. Age discrimination is par for the course in the NHL I guess…

  70. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

I dont know, correct me if Im wrong……isnt “development” over rated. Did Ken Dryden “develop” in the minors? Did Grant Fuhr? Both were world class goalies that started at age 19. Many more also, not to list everyone. Development “at this level” is overrated in my book. Poulin looked AWESOME last nite. let him “develop” here

  71. avatar MelvilleIsles says:

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your 2011-2012 Islanders Head Coach….Doug Weight.

Somehow, someway, Wang will hire this guy as a player-coach so his salary can count towards the cap floor.

I like the idea of Weight staying on in the organization, but I just get nervous in the role he will have.

  72. avatar Josef says:

The Islanders matched up nicely against the Crosbyless / Malkinless Pens. It goes to show you that as our young players continue to develop, the addition of two top line talents could springboard a young talented team into powerhouse like the Penguins are. If Winnie the Poulin is as legit as he seems to be, the Isles could be taking the next step.

  73. avatar isles72 says:

can weight sit beside garth at the draft table instead of the owner ?

    thanks .

  74. avatar Jakebrake says:

Weight is very well respected throughout the NHL with players, coaches and GM’s alike. It would serve the Islanders well to have him as an assistant GM to make use of those good relationships. I know this wont happen but the best thing for this org. would be to rehire Trottier as the assistant GM and make Weight the president of hockey operations.

  75. avatar GoingThroughTheMotions says:

I think this team desperately needs a new head coach, who will bring a new philosophy. We have no team toughness, and are just a soft team in every aspect of the game. Opposing players don’t respect us not even the refs/league. This team plays with NO passion. If we are a bunch of kids, trying to make a name why aren’t they playing like every shift is their last. Im sick of being a doormat! We have played this weak/soft style of hockey for years now. Maybe it starts at the top.

  76. avatar orngfan says:

I dont know if Doug Weight has what it takes to be a NHL assistant coach just yet, I feel as if he would be better suited in a hockey ops role or as an assistant to the GM. He definitely should get a front office job in the organization. That’d be the first step towards having a front office with a clue.

  77. Nice to see Poulin turning into the Goalie that Patrick Roy predicted him to be. “The Poulin Wall”. I would like Weight to stay in the Organization but he really needs to be an Asst. Coach. Making him an Asst. GM is a big mistake. Making him an Asst. Coach is a very good move. Hopefully management sees it that way. QUESTION: If Nabokov sits out the Whole Season & we retain his rights for next season- If the Isles trade him in November 2011 does he have to clear Waivers first? it

  78. avatar GoingThroughTheMotions says:

On a seond note-Can we see Grabner on the penalty kill-he is bound to get some shorty breakaways.

  79. avatar Jerry says:

I have a question for everyone, If Poulin and I agree is ready now for the NHL doesn’t Dipietro still have like 6-8 more years left on his contract? I know he’s always hurt but not enough to keep him out for the year or even for him to retire. So this kid is gonna get yanked around for the forseeable future.

  80. avatar Brian says:

Great, so we’ll have an unexperienced assistant GM to go with our unexperienced GM.

  81. avatar Sidd Finch says:

As I see it, Nabokov likely becomes an asset for the Isles on July 1st if his contract is tolled. At that point, Garth has the right to trade him without clearing waivers. The problem may be that no one really wants to take a flyer on him at that point. His max value is probably a 3 at best, more likely a 5. If the NHL charged the Isles a waiver fee, then I think they are well within their rights to extract value from him. Doubt he would have the nerve to get on the ice and tank, because that would totally diminish any value he might have for himself. I have never heard of a pro athlete intentionally sabotaging his present team in order to be traded. I just don’t see how the potential acquiring team could view this athlete as not being willing to do the same at some future point. Poulin on the other hand continues to impress, who needs Nabby!!!

  82. avatar miket says:

It all starts from the top. We must stop with all the ex-players in the front office in management positions.
We need Hockey men (GM, Head Coach. Scouts, etc) who understand the game and can implement structure and order, and who have a level of respect that players want to play for. We can all talk about the great things Snow has done and acquiring picks, meanwhile 2007 was the last time we made the playoffs, the last time we won a round in the playoffs was 93. There is no light at the end of this tunnel.

  83. avatar 15Cyclones says:

For now Poulin is better served here (IMO) with the Isles! If they could have got better net presence and scored they “probably” would have had 2 points!!!! Also the league has to do something with the players being PUSHED into the goaltender. I support protecting the goalie, BUT this is the 2nd instance where we were not at fault!!!!

  84. avatar Smitty031 says:

I have a sinking feeling Weight is the new coach

  85. avatar JT91 says:

#79 try 11 years on his contract!

  86. CB: Not knowing how an NHL mgmt structure is setup where does director of hockey operations position sit relating to Owner/GM??

  87. avatar StevieL says:

Weight as assistant anything??? Are you kidding me!! When did he ever play goaltender?? That’s a big hole is his resume!! The lack of any administrative or coaching experience does make him a perfect fit for this org. but not being a goalie really concerns me!!!:)
Poulin should not be sent down untill someone tells me who in Bridgeport can train him better!

  88. avatar Schultz39 says:

What’s next? Hunter retires and becomes the head of ticket sales?

I like Doug Weight and think he’s had a great career, but I get a feeling like other people that he’s going to get job that he is just not qualified for…ala Senor Snow.

  89. avatar Mars Bonfire says:

“Charles is great. I’ve played for a lot of owners, and he’s first-class.”
Will Dougie think the same when he is let go and promised another position in the organization which will never come?

  90. avatar TM says:

Weight would just be 1 more to learn on the job with no experience. That’s NYI’s M.O. You’ve seen the results that has produced. He’s already graduated from the Butch Goring school of homers. Which is all Wang requires for employees.

What happens to DP if Poulin gets the starting job by mid next season or in 2012-2013? With so much money and years left on the contract, that’s 1 expensive backup.

    Thanks Charles! ugh

  91. avatar jimmy says:

is anyone else here sick and tired of rob schremp?? he does not belong in the nhl!! why not make the second line comeau bailey okposo?? that line would be good for us. maybe okposo can bring the best out of bailey.. also would anyone here trade our #1 pick for semin?? i would. then our first line can be moulson tavares semin… snow do something!!

  92. avatar TM says:

Sorry for the 2nd post Chris but I was curious if you or any of the readers know if NYI has ever gone an entire season without a sellout at home?

With the snow storm and probably about 3000 people there tonight it hit me that NYI hasn’t sold out a game yet this season. Unless NYR fans fill the place for the last game vs them it’s pretty likely that this could be the only season without a sellout?

  93. avatar Bill says:

The only one with enough patience for the Islanders would be Ghandi.

    They suck

  94. avatar Dr Phil says:

What was Nielsen doing on the power play? He can only score on a shootout, when no one is on the ice to breath on him. Also, what makes them think they can pull the goalie the last minute with an extra man to tie the game, when they can’t score with an extra man on the power play? Just what the Isles need: more dead WEIGHT in the from office. He’ll fit in well with butt-kisser Snow.

  95. avatar JS43 says:

Just what we need another,”yes man”…What the hell is going on ??? Is there any end to the insanity…How about finding an esthablished winger to play with JT….Or does Garth and Wang want him to leave the organization like a bad habit….Please someone tell me there is some end to the madness.

  96. avatar sj says:

I hope SNOW realizes now that there is no chance that Moulson will re-sign with the Islanders. He has the same agent as Nabokov. This brilliant idea of suspending Nabokov screwed Snow of having a good relationship with Don Mehhan in the future.
Do you think our great leader considered poking around first to see if Nabokov had any interest in playing for this team??

  97. avatar Battfist says:

Really wanted to go to tonites game…

Tickets in hand- but living in Bay Ridge with this snow storm has changed my plans. Real bummer-especially since I cnt take public transportation to the game.

    Lets go Islanders!!!

  98. avatar 4theisles says:

If its the same old, same old, next season vis-a-vis not really improving the team, except for a draft pik and cheap waiver rejects and third line vets, then Weight’s presence won’t make much difference.

  99. avatar The New Isles GM says:

I see Weight being a player development coach like Sillenger is now in Edmonton or an Assistant coach of Bridgeport. There is no need to rush him right to an assistant coach in the NHL. Quite frankly, does he deserve to have that position next year? I know the guy put up 1,000 points in his NHL career but Gretzky wasn’t the answer in Phoenix. I’m all for showing loyalty to our former players, but giving him Trotts job will probably be the choice Snow and Wang make. Once again, showing loyalty by disloyalty. Interesting how that works.

At this point in time, I’m so exhausted by all the negative feedback and commotion surrounding the Islanders I just want to focus on something positive. CB, is it to early to start talking about draft day? That’s about the only thing I’m looking forward to this year other then resigning Matt Moulson.

  100. avatar Strummmer's Army says:

Has Matt Martin not had a fight since he fell awkwardly after a check a while back? I think I am right about that, wonder if there is a lingering injury.

Doug Weight having a role with the team? 100% he should. He’s the exact type of guy that will help bring a lot of credibility with it, he poised, and he seems like the type to be successful in what ever he tries, sorry Butchie but Doug would do a great job on the Isles broadcast.

Kevin Poulin you rocked! Time for the Isles to let him pick a real jersey number.

I am so sick of PA on the Tavares line. He’s not a difference maker, he is not a 1st line guy but he gets first line minutes even on the PP. He benefits a ton from JT and Moulson and just being there but they are helping him and he’s is holding them back. Okposo, Bailey, Martin, Grabner are all guys who make more sense with JT (Nino next year).

Heard Streit and Jurcina were skating! Them replacing Geravis and Reese in the line up would be huge.

I question Capuno’s choice to not dress Gillies for the Pens. Everyone knows they are are seriously dirty team, with many guys who can throw. Isles only had Konopka, Hamonic, and Martin (though I think he’s not fighting because of an injury). Not enough for a team like Pitt.

Pens are challenging for the CUP every year and they have loads of toughness, same with Philly, Ana, and several others.

WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK OF BRENDAN SHANNAHAN GETTING A MANAGEMENT ROLE WITH THE ISLES? He is very well respected and getting experience in the NHL offices now. Could he make a good team President or another role?

Isles just need to bring in a respected coach, team president, top notch assistant GM, a couple more scouts, keep developing the players they have, fix the defense, rehire Jaffe, finally find a job for Trottier, and get some progress made on an arena and watch how the perception of the team changes. I know it’s a long list but could be done in a couple months.

  101. avatar sean says:

Why so many negative comments. We get it, we are a joke And sucked for almost 20 years but they have to be doing this for a reason. Yeah we need good veteran players but I like our prospects we have. They are a lot better than milburys garbage we had, oh wait we have dp. If Wang wanted to sell he would n,have already, maybe he is up to something for the future.

  102. avatar LouD says:

Great game last night. Tough, gritty, hard working, all that was missing was a couple of goals on the Isles part but they certainly gave 100% when they have nothing to play for and I’m impressed that Capuano is getting this out of the team. On a side note I would like to thank the Pittsburgh commentators for their classy and educated broadcast. After being forced to watch the Sabre broadcasts for two games it was nice to hear a couple of objective callers in the booth. The Sabres guys literally messed up their own teams name “devils, i mean lightning, i mean Sabres”. Yeah, you should know the name, they sign your checks.

  103. avatar CM says:

Weight should be assitiant coach in Bridgeport when Capuano goes back down. Yes… I’m hanging onto a thread we get an expericed NHL coach. Or Weight should be part of player developement for at least one year before anything else.

For optics alone, Isles need to be more careful how they re-assign within. Otherwise, we’ll just continue to be the butt of jokes again and again. Hopefully Weight is wise enough to consider the optics too.
