NHL FINES THE ISLANDERS $100,000
Trevor Gillies suspended 9 games, Matt Martin 4

by Chris Botta on February 12th, 2011 at 11:37 pm

11:35 pm: Colin Campbell’s statement: “The actions by the Islanders’ Gillies and Martin were deliberate attempts to injure by delivering blows to the head of players who were unsuspecting and unable to defend themselves. The message should be clear to all players: targeting the head of an opponent by whatever means will be dealt with by suspension. The Islanders also must bear some responsibility for their failure to control their players.”

For the reaction from the fans, attendance they’ll get for the home season finale against the Penguins on April 8, and other reasons, the Islanders may feel they got their money’s worth. Eric Godard received an automatic ten-game suspension for leaving the bench, but coach Dan Bylsma was absolved of any blame. Neither Bylsma or the Penguins organization were fined or suspended.

Brooks Orpik on the Islanders to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: “That was isloated with them. I don’t think other teams would stoop to that level.”

Trevor Gillies suspended 9 games, Matt Martin 4

  1. avatar Brett says:

If it brings the team together this was well worth it

  2. avatar EricCup says:

I find it hard to believe that the Pitt organization wasn’t fined at all. 9 games for Gillies seems a bit much based on what he actually did compared to previous similar acts in the league this year.

  3. avatar loaf says:

    well worth it

  4. avatar the1gwiz says:

With the way they won back the respect of many of their fans last night, myself included, and motivated people to visit the Coli for a game or three down the stretch, that $100k was a fine investment.

  5. avatar rob says:

martin 4 games ok…. should have squared off face to face. Gillies 9 games ( think the taunting added 4-5 games). OH well can live with it. Islanders need to come out and say they have no problem with the fine and move on.

  6. avatar mond says:

I think 7 would have been better for Gillies and 4 seems about right for Martin for the intent. 100k is a lot of money though especially considering Bylsma was absolved.

  7. avatar Rich says:

Of course they weren’t. It was the Islanders fault, after all, for keeping getting knocked down all the time.

  8. avatar Isle Be Damned says:

It was a little bit more then what I felt the players deserved (I had Gillies at 6 and Martin at 2 or 3)

But it’s actually less then what I thought the NHL would hand out. I was fully expecting 15 games for Gillies & 10 for Martin.

Chris, what about Haley? Does his double game misconduct result in him sitting out tomorrows game?

  9. avatar orngfan says:

i guess “failure to control your team” doesn’t have anything to do with one of your players flying off the bench during a fight to be the third man in. that’s just ridiculous. if i were wang i’d pay colin campbell in pennies

  10. avatar Justin says:

gillies got 9 for talking smack after the fact….similar to avery getting 6 for making fun of his ex girlfriend….martin for 4 is expected…..100K big whoop….pocket change for charley wang. Way to go boys, use this a turnaround point for the franchise!

  11. avatar Knight of Cups says:

Colin Campbell comes through again with the fairness and grace. Hey, thanks again for showing why you are and will continue to be a joke. Compare Matt Cookes punishments to Gilles and tell me where the logic is. 100k for the Isles. Well done. Montreal and Boston play “Old time hockey,” but the Isles cant control their players.

  12. avatar Staten Islander says:

They came down a little heavy on Gillies, Martin seems about right. Orpic should have gotten a couple of games for pushing Grabner, he was VERY lucky he didnt get concussed.

Overall, it was fair, and very well worth it. now they have to take care of business tomorrow in Buffalo.

  13. avatar eric m says:

considering the ice time both these players enjoy currently, not a big loss this season. now they have “big Histories” with the NHL. down the road, that will be a problem.
in terms of fairiness compared to other recent offenses across the NHL, its a joke. Media perception had a major impact on the length of suspension. it will be interesting if Gilles misses more games then player he checked. that would be an NHL first, and the isles would be on the short side of that first. again, not a shock.
Pass the hat in the locker room. still a memorable nite, and none of our players were hurt.

  14. avatar Tim Bradley says:

How do the Islanders get cited for failure to control bench when the penguins had less players left at the end of the game and they had a player jump over the boards and be suspended for 10 games

  15. avatar matt from Holtsville says:

    NHL IS GETTING SOFT

  16. avatar StevieL says:

100 Grand ! Really??? Weren’t there 2 teams fighting?? Haley got nothing?? How is Isle mgmt. supposed to control what’s going on, on the ice? What did Boston or Montreal get fined the other night? Colin and Bettman are jokes. C’mon Garth say something!!

  17. avatar geduffer says:

What else is new? If it was the other way around, I’m sure the Pens wouldn’t have received anywhere near the suspensions. It’s up to us to have the guy’s backs and we’ll get another crack at the Pens in
    April.

  18. avatar doc says:

Still amazes me how biased and anti-islanders Colin Campbell rules. Talbot takes out Comeau with a dangerous blindside hit and doesn’t even have a hearing.

  19. avatar Z says:

Further proof that the NHL caters to the penguins? Godard automatically gets 10 games but nothing for being the third man in? And no ejection for Johnson who was in a fight? Ridiculous.

  20. avatar Scott from Newburgh says:

Colin Campbell is a joke. This guy has no idea on how to had out disapline. 9 games for Gillies for what? I dirty hit that would nomally by Colin’s standards be 4 games. It’s embaressing!

  21. avatar Joe says:

SO What! Well worth it to see the Pens get beaten physically and emotionally!

  22. avatar A Real NHL fan says:

.. Failure to control players? HAHAHA this league is comical and the different penalties for different player is a joke. do u think if “Any” of these players was a star the suspensions would be that long?

.. The problem is there is no officl stance besides leaving the bench (10 games) besides that its ALL UP TO COLIN CAMPBELL AND BETTMAN and thats scary!

.. Its amazing how the guys in the NHL front office ‘dont get it’, they truly dont! The ONLY people who B!TCH, WHINE and CRY about physical hockey are the people who dont buy ticket$! The crybaby announcers and crybaby media NONE OF EM PAY TO WALK INTO A GAME! NONE THEY ARE SO OUT OF TOUCH!

.. The Isles stood up for the franchise/crest finally and this game had more ‘buzz’ and interest than any Islander game in 5 years but the league wants us to watch and act like the detroit snore wings! ZZZzzzz, no thanks ill NEVER pay my hard earned $$ for euro ice capades, no thanks.. It doesnt have to be 24/7 fights but i sure would like some emotion and passion in a game, thats what makes a rivalry and interest

.. Thanks for letting me rant CB, this is a topic thats very close to me and im passionate about it! :-(

  23. avatar IslesfanfromFlorida says:

WOW, this is total BS, i understand some of the suspensions, but 9 games for a ELBOW that caused a concussion, but Talbut didnt get anything for his ELBOW that cause a concussion for BLAKE? Martin, well we knew he was getting shafted for going after a HELPLESS, lol HELPLESS TALBUT. What a (CAT) for curling up in a ball. Im sure wang was happy to pay the 100k to not have his players run all over each game. Cant wait to see HALEY again, NHL on the FLY things he wont be stayin with the Isles for long, but we all know now its atleast 10 games. What a dumb@$ss, LETS GO ISLANDERS

  24. avatar Frank James says:

Hopefully the Isles got their feelings on the crap their players have endured that go unpunished.
The Isles should not back down.
Haley must stay with the club for the remainder of the season.
Gutless headshots should be dealt with consistantly and you won’t see the need for displays like last night.
$100,000 as a price tag to get back your fanbase?
    Money well spent.

  25. avatar Isle be a Fan says:

9 games certainly is excessive for that. But who is really surprised. What is surprising is that the Penguin coach was “Absolved” from a standard rule ! OMG HA, what a JOKE !!!! what is the point of having a standard rule!!! Anywhooo, Still a great job by the players, and I will definitely be there on April 8th with as many people as I can bring. —- As should all of you for that matter. If you are of able bodied and don’t make every effort to be there, then you really should stop posting from your Couch.

  26. avatar Petez says:

How the pens organization doesn’t get fined for failure to control their players I don’t know. Wasn’t it bylsmas reponsibility to control Goddard? How about controlling Johnson in waiving Haley over? Again we get the shaft from the league. If it helps this team turn the corner, it is well worth it. They should carry the moniker of us against the world as it seems to ring true. Go Isles. I will buy a full price ticket to at least one game to help with the fine. What a joke.

  27. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

I was honestly expecting much worse. Gillies punishment makes sense and Martin’s is fine with me. As long as Konopka and Haley weren’t punished, I’m good.

CB, when you get a chance, can we get your thoughts on the Pens announcer knocking the Isles organization?

  28. avatar dave says:

The NHL loves the penguins. notice yesterday that they did not put the game anywhere on the front page of the website? No need to promote the islanders. The NHL is extremely biased and unprofessional.

  29. avatar JKP in Halifax says:

Colin Campbell needs to go. He’s so terribly inconsistent. I think he still hates the Isles for beating him in the ’82 finals when he was with the ‘Nucks.

CB, you should try to get Campbell for one of your interviews and have him explain why Gillies got 9 yet Cooke only gets 4 for nearly killing someone…

And when was the last time a team was fined that much and what was it for. “Failing to control players”? Sounds ridiculous to me.

  30. avatar Brian G says:

    typical Colin Campbell, no consistancy.
Isles get slapped with a 100k fine for not controling their players, why no fine for Pitt – was there a need to put Brent Johnson back on the ice…that kept things going…what about the text book blindside hit by Orpik on Grabner….also blindside hit on Comeau 10 days ago

Bill Berg from on the fly said everything was perfect…I have to disagree. Gillies is a first time offender and get 9….Matt Cooke is a repeat offender & biggest cheapshot artist and get 4 games for leaving his feet on hit from Behind?

    Islanders still get zero respect

  31. avatar pete debenedetto says:

I’ll buy 2 tickets to the game against LA, a hat, and some food. That’s my donation. Well worth it.

Haley back tomorrow? Yabo call up? Zenon playing tomorrow? Keep the emotions going.

Thank you Islanders for bringing pride back into that team.

p.s. — Martin really should have faced him.

  32. avatar bcarroll25 says:

serial head hunter matt cooke gets 4 games and gillies, who hit from side and not even to head gets 9? martin 4 games? garth please, wang please stand up like your players did, don’t be doormats to colon/bettman, what are they going to do, penalize your team anymore unfairly? as far as the talk about captain, this game showed a lot. hamonic, skill, toughness, leadership gets an a, konopka, resign the lockerroom leader, give him an a, and jt the team stuck up for him another a. barring the acquistion of a legitimate, in his prime, top flight player to wear the c. the player i see being on the outside is kyle. i know he’s been hurt, but i think what his skillset brings doesn’t translate to anything greater than the three above mentioned.he really could have made a statement friday night, but unless he is still hurt, where was his impact? bailey and especially hamonic(fighting rupp)stepped up

  33. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

A little bitter and biased there Shawn? You get lost on your way to emptynetters? Talbot’s hit on Comeau was dirty. Why else did he call him up to apologize? And your team hasn’t lost as many players or man-games lost to injury as the Isles. Pens got embarrassed and that’s all there is to it.

  34. avatar robert says:

what a shock, that p.o.s. jealous former rag campbell, who hates the isles finds that its all the isles fault like always and talbot and the other scums in the leauge can get away with giving unprovoked blindsided concussions anytime. enough was enough and hopefully the isles will be a tougher and stronger team physically and mentally from now on.

  35. avatar Rich says:

The suspensions make sense. The fine is just silly. It takes two to tango so how are the Pens not fined at all. The fine is a joke. Where was the fine for failure to control the players in that fight filled Bruins-Habs game a few nights ago.
So the NHL policy on fighting is you can fight just keep it under control…. silly

Watch the highlights any night on NHL Network almost every games highlight shows at least one fight. Tonight the Min-STL game had a few. The leagues own network promotes fighting. Just keep it under control….

  36. avatar Len says:

Hurray for the Isles finally standing up for themselves, I was proud to be there last night and see the penguins get outplayed. Shame on the NHL for being one sided and not handing out fines and suspensions appropriately. The Penguins are truly the’darlings’ of the league. Too bad.
    Let’s go Islanders!

  37. avatar Jim says:

Comeau is still out but no suspension, fine or even penalty for Talbot.

    Go figure.

  38. avatar rick says:

the only problem with the ruling is that nothing happend to the penguins, i agree with the games that we got. the pens should have gotten a fine, and goddard should have gotten a few more games for the 3rd man in and elbow causing hillen’s concussion.

  39. avatar Matt says:

These suspensions and fines are beyond ridiculous. I don’t believe it is a bias against the Isles per se, but a bias against a lousy team and organization both by the media and the league.

100k for not controlling players? No Islander left the bench. A Penguin did. no islander has a dirty history including Trevor…but several Pens do. how come the Pens didn’t control Brent Johnson who instigated 2 secondary fights. The Pens put him back in after pulling him. How come they weren’t fined for controlling repeat
offender Matt Cooke? Was Gillies hit worse than other suspend able hits this year? Was Martin’ shot on Talbot worse than Lucic on Meyer or Staal on Prust? neither suspended.

  40. avatar kk from Taipei says:

Worth every penny, and every game of suspension.

  41. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Sounds about right. I was thinking that the Pens would have have gotten fined also. If the NHL had suspended Talbot, I don’t think it would have been so violent. But I’m assuming that the NHL did warn both sides before the game which is why there were game miscontucts given in the first fight.
Maybe DP means more to the lockerroom than we give credit for which is why everyone went out to make a statement.

  42. avatar Bryan says:

    Total BS!!
    1. Gillies got too much, should have been four at the most.
    2. We get fined for “not controlling” our players, but none of us jumped off the bench to be the third man in.
    3. Wang and Snow need to come out against the clear bias that Campbell has towards the Isles.

No consistency from the league as usual, the league needs to create clear, cut- and-dry rules and enforce them equally. Either that or they need some checks and balances to oversee Campbells bias’.

Nevertheless, I’m still ecstatic about what the boys did last night. Hopefully this will be a springboard for the Isles to make some noise next season.

  43. avatar Mike says:

Agree with JKP…$100,000 fine and the Pens get nothing? Matt Cooke already screwed up Marc Savard’s life and he gets 4 games for that hit on Tyutin? Wow. I’d love to see somebody…anybody interview Colin Campbell. But the league probably wouldn’t let that happen. This is a complete joke and I don’t think I’m being a homer by saying so.

  44. avatar Steven says:

Seriously, there is no one worse at their job in North America than Colin Campbell.

The NHL, and Campbell in particular, has no credibility on the issue of player safety. For Matt Cooke to go barely punished for his hit on Tyutin, and Phaneuf to go unpunished for his hit on Tavares and then feign concern over player safety is a complete joke.

As most fans have said, this was the best Islanders game since 2002 against TOR.

  45. avatar Anthony L says:

Colin Campbell is a joke. I don’t care about any of these suspensions or the fine. That game was the most I’ve had to cheer about since Bates’ penalty shot goal against the Leafs.

  46. avatar onesinceforty says:

I’m just hoping Martin’s reputation does not limit his ability in the future to play the style of game that makes him effective.

  47. avatar "WeWantTen" says:

I’ve been going to home games since their second season and after going last nite, I’ve been watching the game for the better part of the day and evening. The rulings were very well thought out. The refs favored the Penguins last nite but what else is new. I also want to give kudos to Butch and Howie who had their best game of the year too, going down memory lane, projecting the events that would unfold before the game started and Howie making historical references to an Islander game on this same night that the war in Vietnam ended. Good job by the NHL overall on the rulings.

  48. avatar 2Bit says:

I can live with this. Gillies, as much as I love his passion, can get out of hand & he does need to learn how to bring it back a notch. 9 seems a bit excessive, but I think it is fair since they let us keep Haley & Konopka. Guys who can muscle up when they need too, yet also play the game well. This works out well for us. Martin’s 4 game seems about right since he is now a repeat offender. He should have known better to face Talbot before going after him. Overall, I can honestly say I think they were nice on us here & though they could’ve been a little harsher on the Pens I’m sure they’ll be keeping a closer eye on their group.

  49. avatar Steven says:

Also (and I abhor the DP bashing on this site so don’t misconstrue) but I’d be willing to bet Ricky reaches into his wallet on this one…

  50. avatar James C says:

Who takes Campbell seriously anyhow? Any and every isles fan realizes this was worth the suspensions dealt. Damn proud to be the bruisers as opposed to doormats.

  51. Was well worth the entire game. That was a fine $100,000 game

  52. avatar James says:

There are 6 parts to this situation, 3 I am ok with, but 3 I am not

I am ok with Martin getting 4 games, Godard getting 10 and Haley getting nothing

The fine is a joke, if you are going to fine the Isles that much money, the Pens should have gotten some sort of fine. Last I checked, it takes two to tango.

I think 9 games for Gillies was a bit too much, 4-6 would have fit the crime better.

The fact that Johnson gets nothing is a joke, he clearly baited Haley.

  53. avatar Socrates says:

There goes the July 1st free agent fund

  54. avatar Faye from Brooklyn says:

The NHL needs to bear responsibility for the biased officiating that was a direct cause of what happened last night. As for E.Coli Campbell’s “justice” – and the garbage spouted by NHL mouthpieces – typical nonsense.
NHL has to lose its double standard where Original 6 teams and the marketing-favored team (Pens, Washington) get close to carte blanche – and the other teams are treated like cannon fodder.

  55. avatar IslanderFAN says:

Once again The NHL/Colin Campbell proves to me they are a bunch of clowns..honestly do they take the fans for idiots!! colin said they wont accept blows to the head?? what Matt Cooke did to Marc Savard (ending his career)what the heck you call that Colin?? honestly quit your job you look ridiculous.

  56. avatar mario vecchione says:

This is exactly why the NHL is considered a joke. Colin Cancer’s own kid can beat an opponent bloody who doesn’t fight at all during a melee and that’s ok. Colin continually makes examples of the Islanders. This league and this character of half a man needs a reality check. As Mario Lemiuex said many years ago, “it’s a garage league”.

  57. avatar ASL says:

I guess what we saw was an “under control” Penguin team. 2 sets of rules in the NHL. Colin Campbell better remember that when the teams’ fortunes are reversed. Penguins don’t look so great without Crosby and Malkin. Success can be fleeting.
Even though it is not my money, (or maybe it is…. it is less than what I have spent on tickets for the last 20+ years). It is worth it. The Islanders grew up last night. They served notice to the league, and maybe let some impending free agents know that something special maybe happening here.

  58. avatar Steven says:

Like the pitts have controlled Cooke? How many careers is he going to end? Get a clue Colin and Bettman.

  59. avatar Bryan says:

What was Stall’s punishment for his cheap shot the other night…still waiting.
I hope Wang goes ninja style on Campbell

  60. avatar A colin connects to an *@# hole for a reason says:

Don’t understand the 9 games for Gillies at all. This is a guy who strictly follows code in all of his fights, never hits a guy after the guy has fallen to the ground, and a guy who got Goddard’s helmet off in a first period fight, but let Goddard go when Goddard said “Mercy, you are my Daddy”. Gillies easily could have pummeled Goddard’s unprotected head. Gillies is also so good to all fans, will never turn down an autograph request, and is an ambassador for the league. First time offender given 9 games by Colin. No way.

  61. avatar csk says:

I don’t ever recall a hockey team being fined $100K

I don’t mind Gillies & Martin getting some games – Gillies had it coming

The team will continue to operate with a chip on its shoulder

    Tomorrow’s game will be interesting

  62. avatar Steven says:

Oh – and Orpik can shut his yap given his questionable hit on Grabner. Pot, meet kettle. What a jerk.

  63. avatar mario vecchione says:

Jordan Staal of the PITTSBURGH PENGUINS throws a glove hand punch to Brandon Prust’s “HEAD” and nothing. That’s not intent to injure? No wonder why no one cares about hockey and the media portrays it as a circus act. Garage league

  64. avatar warren says:

I was in the NHL store earlier today and it is clear that the Penguins are the darlings of the league officialdom and clearly the most promoted team by their PR apparatus. As someone who has not attended games for many years, but previously had season tickets during the glory days, there was absolutely no question that the referees were biased against the Islanders. I believe that it was due primarily to the probability that the refs are from small Canadian towns while NY represents the big time. I also noticed that the cheap shots the Penguins took were always to the skill players who were more defenseless (Grabner by Orpik and late in the game, a cross check in the back of Frans Nielsen by Tyler Kennedy.) This makes me believe that the Penguins have not learned their lesson and that perhaps Johnson, Kennedy and Orpik need to get ‘theirs’ on April 8th. The Penguins have much more to lose than the Islanders, so if I was them, I’d be very careful about what is said and what they do.

  65. avatar Tom89 says:

Colin Campbell: “targeting the head of an opponent by whatever means will be dealt with by suspension” . . . except when Matt Cooke took out Marc Savard, in that case, Savard was a “fake artist” and Cooke went free without suspension. What a joke – I personally have no serious problems with the suspensions to Gillies/Martin (they knew they would be disciplined, and so did we) I won’t sit here and pick and choose what should be the right number of games – it is what it is – whatever . . . but I have a huge problem with Campbell’s comments. He is the true fake artist.

  66. avatar Steven says:

63 I guess Colin and Bettman are not happy with Hockey being the 4th sport they want to try for 10th.

  67. avatar Bill says:

It’s time for Wang to get involved. He has always had Betteman’s ear and it’s about time he did something about getting Colin Campbell moved.
There has been more than enough evidence over the years to prove Campbell’s unfair rulings against the Islander’s and their players.

Wang should be in Bettmen’s office on Monday, demanding an explaination of why Pitt goes unpunished, a reduction of Gillies suspension (5 games would be fair)
and calling for a replacement of clueless Colin.

I think that would go a long way in proving to Isles fans that Wang really cares about the team and Long Island.

    Time to step up, Charles.

Chris…what happens if Wang refuses to pay the fine?

  68. avatar Jim Clark says:

The song for the next Penguins game at NCVMC should be Edith Piaf’s “Je ne regrette rien”.

I’m surprised Campbell didn’t forfeit the win to Pittsburgh.

  69. avatar Sidd Finch says:

I doubt very much that the NHL watched the tape on this game very closely. Kris Letang cross checked JT twice while he was in the corner and JT get the peanlty for a slash. KL also swung at JTs ankles. He also took a pretty good shot at KO late in the game. How about Orpik’s hit on Grabner? I disagree with Butch who thought the hit was OK. it was all about positioning and Grabs could easily have broken a rib or puncuted a lung going into the net at that level. Furthermore, the league is culpable for sending out a junior crew onto a game that had clear overtones. Pens broadcast crew should STFU about the AHL rosters as the Pens likely had as many AHL mangames for this season in the game as the Isles. Would love to see the Isles roll two Hansen lines for the finalein April, Konopka-Martin-Gillies and Haley-Yablonski-Reichlicz. I would be absolutely shocked if that game is not a sell out by the end of the week and a huge catalyst for 2011-12. This is the way the Isles used to play in the 70s and the 80s, beat them on the scoresheet and in the alley. Unfortunately, its not like the old days when 30 goal scorers like Nystrom, Gillies, Potvin, Trottier and Tonelli could handle themselves. Thoroughly impressed by Hamonic especillay battling Rupp, the whiny b-tch that was too good to sign with the Isles. btw – I wonder how far Haley’s undressing of Letang and Johnson went in keeping himfrom a suspension.

  70. avatar tonelli27 says:

comment#9…funny funny comment…”pay Colin Cambell in pennies”.

I, too, believe that we need to fill up the Coliseum for the next game.

As far as man power lost, no biggie here; Shremp steps back in(for Gillies), Haley takes over Martins spot. Seriously, fans, Gillies is rediculous; he is talentless, and seems a bit loose in the head.
Haley seems as though he at least, has an upside of offensive skills.

  71. avatar Islesfan In Vancouver says:

how does gillies get 9 games and cooke was only suspended for 4??? Campbell is a joke, has been a joke for years and the NHL is wildly inconsistent with their suspensions. 4-5 would have been consistent with the crap they’ve been handing out.

  72. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

Funny how they have a guy jump over off the bench and join in, but Bylsma gets absolved and we get fined 100k. I agree that 9 games of Gillies suspension are from the chirping. When they were assessing the punishments they must have been watching the Pens broadcast with their commentators. Thoses goons took too many shots at the Isles verbally. I have NEVER heard our broadcasters insulting the other team.

  73. avatar Sidd Finch says:

Also noticed how Staal danced over and grabbed Bruno knowing Gervais is in no position to fight. Seems like a bit of a puss move to me considering all the hacking he did in front of the net on the PP. Guess the Pens cant lose their last star considering Fleury isnt much of a goal scorer.

  74. avatar jeff says:

If colin had of dealt with talbot properly then this could have been avoided. His inconsistency led to this. There is no price that can be put on pride or respect. Well done islanders!

Without sid and malkin they no longer have a free pass to take cheap shots and goon around in the name of ‘protecting the future of the NHL’. Teams are not going to tolerate this anymore, as the new pens no longer put asses in the empty seats

  75. avatar Strummer's Army says:

“That was isloated with them. I don’t think other teams would stoop to that level.”

Your team does far worse then the Isles ever did all the time.

Talbot said he’d fight someone if asked. Can you believe that. Comeau asked him last game and he wouldn’t and Comeau doesn’t fight. He did not want to fight any Isles last night either. Also, he slashed Mikko before Martin went after him and it wasn’t from behind.

Go after Colin Campbell’s job and then his son!

  76. avatar Cappy says:

No Justice, no peace! The idea that the Isles are a bunch of goons is comical. They have been one of the least physical teams in the league for years, but get no protection from the league or the refs. Now that they have been pushed beyond the breaking point the league wants to step in with a strong hand? It’s pathetic. It seems that the NHL is far more concerned with it’s image than it is with player safety. As long as they allow players like Talbot to skate around the rink and run players at will, there will be a need for vigilante justice. The Penguins, the Islander fans and the NHL got what they deserved … at least the fans are happy with Fridays game and the Isles players should be proud.

  77. avatar Bobdobbs says:

Gillies got 9 for hitting a guy who was face down on the ice in the back of his head with his own helmet. Go back and watch it. He got off easy and probably won’t play in another NHL game this season. Nice hero you got there.

  78. avatar Bill says:

Chris Who do you feel was responsible for the “game plan”?
The players on their own? Garth? or Jack?

I have a feeling that Jack really has a good command of this team. Most of the players have played for him at B’port and he certainly appears to have their attention. The team is so much better than it was under “overspeed.”

I would hate to see Capuano not given a chance next year just because the Isles are afraid of the “cheap” tag. YEs. people will bitch that Garth and Wang don’t want to spend money on a name coach.
But Capuano certainly seems to have molded this bunch into a team. Something that had been sorely lacking under Scottso.
Not because of last night, but because of the way he has quietly handled the loss of all his top goaltenders and still has the Islanders playing quality hockey, I would like to see him get a shot at a full year with a full roster.

As I posted yesterday, this is a team to watch next season. Last night was a giant step. You heard it here, first.

  79. avatar Adam M says:

The NHL Network people are morons they make the islanders look like the bad ones and pens did nothing wrong. Cambell is idiot he’s a joke and should step down. Martin i’m fine 4 games, Gillies 9 is a bit harsh yeah he elbowed the guy in the head should have been 5 or 6. Next time Cook does something stupid it should be 20 games cause he’s a dirty player

  80. avatar mtrico says:

The double standard continues. Colin Campbell is an absolute joke. This league will never achieve any level of success as long as that mindless twit is in a position of authority.

  81. avatar Jerky says:

I believe Bettman’s involvement in handing down the suspensions actually saved the Islanders from worse punishment than if Campbell was allowed to decide on his own. Gillies’ suspension should have been 5 games and I believe Martin deserves 4 games for his intent even though he didn’t follow through. Glad Konopka and Haley were unscathed. Pens deserved a bit more but at least it wasn’t worse for the Isles.

Absolutely nothing major will happen on April 8th when they meet again. The league will warn both teams before the game plus the Pens will not want to lose anyone for the start of the playoffs. Perhaps it will resurface next season/pre-season.

  82. avatar CM says:

So. How is fighting in general not intent to injure??

How did the Mtl/Bos get away with it? Colon should have said something there right? He could have prevented this.

Looks like Wang will have to fire someone now. $100K? I’d be nervous going to the Isles office Monday.

Does the NHL have an ombudsman? Colon is a joke and has an obvious distaste for the Isles.

  83. avatar Daniel says:

Ugh no comment on the length of the suspensions. We are all used to the NHL discipline department’s nonsense. I don’t even care. They made a statement, and I will be at the next Pitt Islander game giving Martin and Gilles a huge round of applause. They did what needed to be done. Who gives a crap what the Pitt media thinks. There has not been this much buzz over the team in a while and I am not talking about league wide, I am talking about here where the real fans come. We loved it, and we appreciated what they did.

  84. avatar AJAX says:

    The Good : Worth it.

The Bad : Wang will jack up the concessions now that more people will attend the next few games to make his money back, or hike up parking.

  85. avatar isles316 says:

I’m with a lot of you guys, the suspensions are what they are and probably right on but the comments by Campbell are embarrassing. Biggest hypocrite I’ve ever seen. He is in over his head in his position and the NHL needs someone in there that the players and fans respect. I mean really, his comments were laughable. Couldn’t control their players ? hahaha..

  86. avatar Michael says:

Just got an email from the Caps: ” Who do we make the check out to cover the costs?

Emailed them back: “We will cover it with pleasure.”

  87. avatar Jakebrake says:

You know what chris, I’m fine with the suspensions/ fine handed to the Isles especially Gillies. However what is the leagues culpability in this? They fine the Islanders 100 large for not controlling their players when the referees themselves could have prevented this past friday by calling the previous game fairly. If the NHL is going to keep this standard of ignoring penalties especially stick infractions on teams based on where they are in the standings, you are going to keep seeing teams having to go this route to protect their players. All they did was strengthen the arguement for vigilante justice when all it cost you is Trever Gillies for what 20 minutes of playing time. Good for the Isles, message sent

  88. avatar The Real Gillies says:

Not sure how Godard doesn’t get more than 10 for the elbow he threw at Hillen to leave him concuss.

We may get to see Yablonski on the 8th boys, everyone mark it down on your calendars.

  89. avatar Gary says:

The fine is a joke, the suspensions are a joke, the pittsburgh pu*!ys are bettmans lovechild, funny that no mention of the game was on nhl.com at all, but somehow every video clip of every fight from the montreal bruins game was on the front page of the site, pittsburgh got what was coming to them, i only wish every other team could do the same to them.

That being said, if the islanders showed this much passion and stuck up for themselves like this every game i would have no problem buying tickets again. HALEY NEEDS TO STAY!! Was def proud of them last night, wang and snow still need to publicly come out and say the fine and the suspensions are BS,

  90. avatar mike says:

in response to orpik…tell him next time he wants to deliver a cheap shot-as he is a repeat offender himself-to take the dick out of his mouth before he speaks

  91. avatar Toby says:

No worries. What no one has mentioned, or at least I haven’t read, is the run that 26 or 28 took at Moulson’s head on one of his goals. Moulson was able to adeptly avoid the hit, which if connected would have been pretty bad.

  92. avatar Larry Satler says:

As I sat watching the Isles game on my NHL package in San Diego I experienced a flashback to the days of the old broad street bullies….good for the Isles. Watching the Isles this season soft is a word that comes to mind, not anymore. I hope they continue a more spirited and physical style of play and finally turn this ship around.

  93. avatar joe mcivor says:

    10 bucks to the fine

  94. avatar Chris Stephenson says:

I have zero problem with any of the fines/suspensions, it was something that HAD to be done.

Plus lest anyone think that the Isles knew full well what the ramifications of this display would cost them – believe me, they knew they would get hauled infront of ths banana firing squad and that suspensions would be handed out.

The Isles knew this would happen.

And I love that they did it anyway.

    Good job fellas.

  95. avatar Steve says:

This is what happens when an “invisible” team punches back at the league’s Marquee. Do not mess with a corporation’s cash flow. The Isles are SUPPOSED to be cannon fodder. Wise up.

  96. avatar Hoser14 says:

Once again Colin Campbell craps on the Islanders. His statement is an insulting bad joke and Wang should refuse to pay 100K fine till Campbell is fired.

The NHL needs to have a colonic and get rid of the clown act. How come the Pens, Habs and Bruins don’t get fined and ripped by the league for “not controlling their players” this week? But the Isles do!

It’s time for Snow and Wang to publicly rip Campbell for his continuous bias against the Islanders. Enough is enough, this is the NHL and not the WWF. When the league doesn’t protect it’s players, they get Friday night’s embarrassment as a result.

The NHL is not serious about controlling the game as long as someone like Colin Campbell is not policing game. While Gillies gets 9 games, Matt Cook a repeat offender, get only 4 games and other headhunters get nothing.

Justice has to equal, and Campbell’s justice is a joke, which is why Friday night’s fireworks happen in the first place. I blame the NHL for having an incompetent head of discipline.

I can’t wait for April’s big time grudge match, I say bring up Gilmore Tuttle, Tim “Dr Hook” McCracken, Ross “Mad Dog” Madison, Andre “Poodle” Lussier, Clarence “Screaming Buffalo” Swamptown and Ogie Ogilthorpe.

There will be blood on the ice!

ps: Does Trevor Gillies come from Mile 40, Saskatchewan?

  97. avatar Will says:

I was talking to a few of my friends about this and i was saying to him if it had been 9-3 pens and the islanders were getting smacked around no one would have batted an eye. His response to that was “if the islanders lost 9-3 to the penguins and got beat up and concussed it would just be another friday night” and he is exactly right. Martin is a fair suspension Gillies hmm the hit wasnt all that bad when compared to what Cooke does on a nightly basis i think the taunting is what got him a few more games but he plays what 2-3 mins a game at most have haley replace him and we will be a much better team, he leads the sound tigers in goals and pim’s denis potvin anyone? lol ok thats a stretch but you see where im going. The fine is chump change compared to the 20mil a year he loses on the team, would have liked to see the pens get one to for godard jumping the bench and johnson being outside of the crease during every fight. Oh well they just need to play well and beat the sabers and play a solid game tomorrow if we lose its all for nothing.

  98. avatar MJS says:

#86 – I hate to say it, but I’ve really felt that way for a while. Butch Goring talked about the Isles inability to get even obvious penalty calls to go their way during another Penguins game while the Pens were running DP and taking some liberties w/ the Isles. The way the league has been pimping the Pens hard I think no team playing this way with the Penguins would escape harsh discipline, especially a perpetually “lowly” team like the Isles. All that said, while this game can be contrasted with the Bruins/Canadiens game of a few nights ago, there was no Gillies elbow to the head in that game. The suspension may be a bit long, but he deserved it. The only real problem I have there is that other players that do the same thing derserve the same punishment, especially guys like Penguins d-bag extrodinaire Matt Cooke. Bottom line, the Pens have been getting off light for a long time, and when the Isles or another “lowly” team step up it throws exactly how the league values the Penguins into sharp relief and in a negative way.

  99. avatar Will says:

i also think that the penguins TV announcers need to be fined for the way they were talking idc who you are its unprofessional to be saying things like that, they were all just sad bc the “ahl club” handed them there a$$’s with 6 goals in the 1st 30 mins of the game and then only kept going with it. Snow and Wang really need to step up to the league maybe make a video of how many blatent missed calls and runs taken at our players and really try and expose Bettman and Campbell whats the worst that can happen get fined more money ZK and MH need contracts NOW!!!!!…. one more thing teams take liberties on our guys game in and game out, tavares, moulson, grabner, bailey, coamue. and probably more all these player are gonna be stars in the league sometime soon especially the 1st 3 and while they might not stay with us forever someone potential great carrear could be cut short bc if your an islander your nothing and dont deserve to live

  100. avatar NYI Hockey-Pride-N-Passion-Restored says:

    “Devastatingly effective Commentary”
Kudos #22 A Real NHl Fan!
    100% Agreement with you!
The NY Islanders may have become a team
last night we shall see if the kids truly grew up last night?
If so then the fines & money mean Nadda!
Lets Go Isles…. Lets Go Islanders!
    Finish the season strong!

  101. avatar nyrangersuck says:

Orpik should take his -3 and shut up lest he become the next target. Funny how useless guys like him become when they don’t have Crosby and Malkin inflating their plus/minuses.

  102. avatar Isles Revamped says:

I am proud to be an Islander Fan for the last 48 hours. Something I have not been able to say in a long time. While Martin should have faced Talbot and not hog tied him I give the kid kudos for trying to make a statement. Next time he will know that proper way to go. I still think this kid is a key ingredient to the Organization. Gillies after watching the tape several may have gone overboard. As a the coach I would try and have him harness that energy a little.

But as fans have stated over and over the league does not protect our star players from being run and hurt. If the league wont do it I am gald to see that the time will finally do it!!!

And the statements of premeditation is pure BS. Anyone that has every played the game truly understands what happen the other night. Protecting your players and standing up for yourselves is not premediated. I hope the rest of the league the message. Is the league going to use that with every other team? Boston and Monteal I guess was spur of the moment? I mean come on lets call a spade a spade here.

Finally I think Kris Letang is another gutless $ussy. Everyone is talking about JT’s slash. First of allit was on the damn foot for crying out loud. Letang went down as if he were shot by a cannon. And where was the referee prior that missed the hit from behind on JT and the two crosschecks to JT’s back when he was on the ice? If someone did that to me I would be swing at more than just the foot.

Go Isles stay strong. Screw the Pens and the league. As a show of good will Garth should send Ray Shero and Pens a few cases of tissues and huggies and sign it love the Stong Island boys.

  103. avatar claude says:

$100,000.00 well spent if this helps turn us around. If we only continue to lose, we’ll be a bigger joke. It’s ok to throw a punch if you have the 2 points to back it up.

  104. avatar Isles Revamped says:

CB sorry for doubling up but for the fans that don’t get access to Newsday I wanted to post a quote by Konopka.

Konopka said of the display: “We have a young, talented team and there have been a lot of liberties taken throughout the course of the season. It can only be built up so much before it comes out . . . It wasn’t just a direct hit on Pittsburgh. They just kind of fell in the way. There were a lot of emotions built up. Sometimes something like this is healthy for a team. Some people outside the hockey world might think I’m crazy to say that, but it will build for the rest of this year and for the future of the organization.”

This guy truly gets it and is a strong leader for the club. The organization needs to KEEP HIM around for a long time. Respectfull and to the point.

  105. avatar booten326 says:

as gunner stahl once said, “well worth it”. The pens were getting a big head after that 3-0 game and not giving a fellow nhl team the respect they deserve. Pens fans will say the isles acted classless and so on but karma is a you know what and when talbot chose to blindly run comeau, martin felt it was ok to do the same to him. Is it right? No…but neither instance was. Don’t dish it out if you can’t anticipate and be ready for extreme reactions. Talbot knew exactly what was he was doing when he chose to level comeau like that. Too bad buddy…and you could see him mouth something like “you blanking feline” as he watched the replay, but let’s be honest…what he did about 9 days earlier was of the same fiber.

  106. avatar Dom says:

MONEY VERY WELL SPENT! Let’s see which team is going to be dumb enough to running our guys again. The league was put on notice that we will no longer tolerate our players getting run. A message to Bettman: You caused this by disrespecting ALL players in this league, no matter how well they are run organizationally or how well they are doing in the standings. The Islanders have good, young players who deserve to be protected as well. YOU FAILED IN YOUR DUTIES and the Islanders administered punishment on their own terms.

  107. avatar EJ says:

I don’t know about the rest of you in Isles Country, but I will chip in toward’s the $100K with 4 tickets on April 8th.

Cirlce the calendar ladies and gents. Cindy Crosby should be back by then.

Simply amazing: no fines for the Penguins and Bylsma ABSOLVED???!!! Nothing handed out for the B’s and Habs the other night??!! WOW…

What can I say that has not been about COLON and Bettman..

  108. avatar isles71 says:

WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!! Campbell & Betman are jokes and will not be happy until someone is seriously injured…Martin gets same as Cooke, please!!!!

  109. avatar JP in NJ says:

OK, we had our blowup, and we definitely were entitled to it. Felt good.

As for the punishment, no surprise.

Now let’s go and win us some games. That’s the only thing that earns respect with other team or the league.

  110. avatar tonelli27 says:

YES! back to business today. Let’s continue our energetic play, and playmaking. Big test for the boys in Buffalo.
Remember to get your tickets to Thursdays game at the Coliseum against the Bruins. Let’s fill the old barn up to show our support.

  111. avatar The new isles gm says:

I’m sorry but something tells me the old barn will be nice and loud during the last game of the season. I fully expect the Islanders to come back the same way. If Bylsma was smart, he would scratch Crosby, Letang, Fluery and Staal that game. It’s going to get rough and the Isles are going to do everything in their power to give their playoff run some displeasure.

  112. avatar PCL says:

can the 100k go towards reaching the cap floor? If so this may become a more frequent event.

  113. avatar Bob Bassen says:

OK. Fine. Gillies and Martin brawled-it-up and are now rightfully punished. I just wonder how Orpik, The Pens, their fans and the League would feel if it was Crosby who was on the receiving end of ANY of Matt Cooke’s infamous hits. Anyone? Yeah, thought so.
Pretty good precedent we have now too for leaving the bench to be 3rd man in. Not even a token fine. You can’t make it up.
Gillies and Martin went over the top and deserved punishment but the *Clay Feet* of Campbell and the League is astonishing.
We’ll see how long Pittsburgh’s pouting and *How could they?” towards the Islanders last after they play the Rangers, Flyers, Capitols, etc. etc. etc.
I’ll see everyone at Thursday’s home game! Lets rock the barn!
    Go Isles!

  114. avatar Jeff W. says:

I have to look at replay again, but I thought the Gillies hit was delivered to the shoulder, and the head contact was with the glass. That would be my only quibble. Clearly the suspensions were based on the head shot rule, and that’s fair, though if I’m right about the Gillies hit, 9 would be a bit much. We can sit here and complain about the league’s lack of disclipline against Pens, but we knew that was going to be so. Bottom line, we’re all over the news again one week later, this time for standing up to last week’s humiliation. It feels great. Now, let’s carry this “culture” (without having to resort to this nonsense every game) to some success.

  115. avatar Tedge77 says:

How does Bylsma not get suspended. Al Arbour got 5 games when Vukota left the bench to join a fight. His resume was a bit more impressive than Bylsma. What also makes me laugh is that the penguins were in a worse position as the Islanders not that long ago. They were almost bankrupt, and in a crappy lease deal with the same company that held ours. They only have Crosby and Malkin because they were suck for a few seasons and got to draft them. They also owed mario so much money that he eventually got control of the team. Pitt fans seem to forget that.

  116. avatar CJCB says:

The NHL is Lame, best game in 5 years easily and the NHL suspends most of the players that made it great. Compared to the Montreal snoozefest the night before with every fan in the arena glued to their seats you would think the NHL would learn something. Place was going nuts for a reason and that stuff was a huge reason. Oh well its going to be a LONG 5-10 games to get these guys back. Back to soft hockey for awhile.

  117. avatar shlo says:

Last week there was a very similar situation (not as bad)between Boston and the Canadians where are the fines and suspensions there? Goalies were fighting. They were not ejected.
    Campbell is a rectum.

  118. avatar islz says:

Gillies incident can be broken down into 3 segments.1. The initial hit. 2 Punching the player when he was down. 3 The wwe taunting. 9 games seems to still be a bit excessive. Glad to see Konopka and Haley didnt get anything. Johnson should have gotten something for leaving his crease for the second time in 2 weeks. Goddard should have gotten more than 10 which is basicallly the minimum penalty. Well worth it. The refs in yesterdays games seemed to be calling alot more penalties, hopefully this is a wake up call to the league.

  119. avatar Steve Scrobe says:

So former (BAD) Penguins defensemen Colin Campbell gives Matt Martin 4 games because he’s a repeat offender? and he gives the Pens Matt Cooke the same punishment-4 games- as a repeat offender this week for his blind hit from behind on Fedor Tyutin earlier this week? That hit could have ended Tyutin’s career. Cooke gave Marc Savard a concussion last year, but Martin gets the same 4 games? Those hits are equivalent? Campbell is a biased hack, mieting out justice depending on the sweater…how many games did Jordan Staal get just two weeks ago for sucker punching Brandon Prust from the blind side…was that not a head shot? ZERO! NO GAMES! Remember, this is a guy-Campbell-who will try to intervene and influnce calls in favor of his own son Gregory an NHL winger (and not a good one; genes…), just check his email scandal on Google. He needs to be removed. look at Martin’s “punch” to Talbot, Cooke’s hit on Tyutin, and Staal’s sucker punch on Prust-all on Youtube- and it will become very obvious how Campbell comes up with these rulings. He doesn’t even bother trying to hide it.

  120. avatar Marc says:

Well worth it, especially since the league will use these suspensions as the new bar and will suspend consistently going forward, as they always have (yeah, right!) Players need to be protected on the ice and the league has done a poor job of that.

Is there any way to find out if the Isles’ asked the league to review any of the Penguins’ actions from Friday’s game?

  121. avatar Manhattan Islanders says:

The reason all the fights started was the lack of respect not only by other teams but the NHL. Now the NHL did it again, protecting their precious Penguins by not fining the coach for Godard leaving the bench. The Islanders are fined 100k because of loosing control of their players but having their players leave the bench should have resulted in a fine to.

  122. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

Bottom line, we came together as a team and for us fans we more than welcomed the passion. Now its up to Charles to provide the right kind of leadership. No surprise by the farce NHL, the intent was to clearly show the Islanders were bad boys and got punished for it while the Pens punishmemnt was mandated by the rules and wasnt really the NHL’s doing. Poor Pens pummeled, how dare them Islanders. PLease.

  123. avatar isles14 says:

please correct me if i’am wrong.but i thought if a player left the bench the coach was fined and suspended.

  124. avatar Isles in VA says:

I agree with #67. The players clearly stood up for this team and its young talent. Now the front office needs to do the same. Garth and Chuck need to make their point to the NHL. Let Gary and Colin know that they demand respect, just like our players did!

  125. avatar brian says:

I’m a little iffy on this whole “it brought the team together thingy”. The problem I have had with the Islanders that last 20 years is that they have been terrible. I never thought the weren’t “togehter”. So 60 or so games into this season they have found each other? Come on. It’s ridiculous. Th reason for their record is that they just aren’t very good,. Martin punching a dude in the head and Gillies hovering over some concused nobody player is not going to change that, Haley…. I mean he wasn’t even there for the last Pens game for goodness sake.

  126. avatar Bryan says:

CB – If Gregory Campbell was an Islander instead of a Bruin would the $100,000 fine been the Bruins to pay and not the Islanders? I see no difference between Greg Campbell unloading on Pyatt and what Gillies did to Tangeredi.

Also, I thought the NHL rule book said any team with a player leaving the bench for an altercation recieves and automatic $10,000 fine.

  127. avatar terry says:

CB i asked you to give out colin campbell and bettmans e mail so we can send them our thoughts on how their hate for the isles sits with the fans. How does Bettman not get that a guy who lost to the isles in a cup as a player and who coached the rags have an ax to grind with the team.Bettman and Campbell are the ones who are to blame for anything that happened because of the way they hand down suspensions to the teams they like and dislike

  128. avatar jim says:

i say blame this all on Blake Comeau (sarcastic of course) Pens are idiots

  129. avatar cylcones15 says:

All was expected BUT the Pens got away scot free. Gillies getting 9 games doesn’t bother me. With Haley and Martin now we do not need Gillies. He plays what 4-5 per game? Haley is much more skilled…Today’s game will show if we have turned the corner! Campbell and Bettman have got to go!!

  130. avatar Kaszycki's Krew says:

You knew we were in trouble when the feature story of the day is snapshots of the Penguins taking cabs to Central Park….Team VERSUS – also known as Team NBC – was skating in the park – oh how cute ! Biggest sham to me is the fine. the 100 k fine is MONEY WELL SPENT. If the Islanders go on a roll from here – not so much winning as playing inspired hockey – never quitting – and guys like Grabner, JT, Matty Moulson and Okposo continue to improve —- they have won back the attention of the fan base in one fell swoop. Should have stood up to the cheap shot stuff earlier.

What gets me is that Colon Campbell is lecturing the Isles for not controlling their player -when it was a PENGUIN who left the bench. Give me a break.

  131. avatar GC says:

unbelievable. No fine$ for the Penguins, excessive fines for the Isles in games and $, but overall, I’m sure the Isles, Wang, Snow & everyone will take it…a small price to pay to get our fanbase back, earn respectabilitiy, and excitement. It motivated me to go get tickets for Thursday’s game – the first game I’ll be going to in over 3 years….

  132. avatar Ct 1970s says:

I hope in future negotiations the NHLPA eill take steps to end the nonsensical and dicatorial reign of bettman and his vindictive minion. Good job Islanders!

  133. avatar Lance79 says:

I’ll play Devil’s advocate and say that were I in their shoes, I as the Pens would be angry and see us as a ruthless team playing off the nothing to lose who basically tried to mug us. Suspensions were handed out and that will and should be the end of it.

HOWEVER, how incredibly ironic (incompetent?) that the league prefaces their statements with the dangers of and punishments for hits to the head when anyone knows everything last night was precipitated BY A HIT TO THE HEAD THAT WENT UNPUNISHED. Here’s a concept: if you don’t want the Isles to thug it up then don’t ignore an incident that was clearly a rule violation; if you don’t enforce the rules for a young team frustrated and in last place they will look for their own justice. For the league to lay ALL of this at our feet and not ‘fess up to their errors (favoritism?) is to be a bunch of d***s.

  134. avatar sean says:

They should tell Campbell It’s hockey not basketball, not a game for wimps and pussies.

  135. avatar cm says:

I’m more upset that the league made the Islanders play in a blizzard–putting their players, staff, fans, media members, security workers, vendors, etc. in danger–but allowed the Blues to postpone their game in similar conditions than I am by these fines/suspensions.

  136. avatar IsleofNJ says:

The question that is never asked by the NHL…..Why did things like this never used to happen in the old days?
ANSWER: Because the players would police it themselves !
LIke everything else these days, the NHL is trying to legislate out part of what makes Hockey what it is.
Instead of adding more rules, they should simply return the game back to what it was.
It’s a pipe dream with Colonblohw at the helm!

  137. avatar Bloody Skull says:

Martin is lucky that another Betuzzi like incident didn’t occur.
    Totally inexcusible!

I honestly can’t believe some of these quotes I am reading on this site.

  138. avatar ts22 says:

So Colin see’s the tape and claims Martin hit a defenseless player SEVERAL TIMES? He cant even watch the tape and get it right. I love how the Pens are guiltless according to the NHL, wasn’t it Goddard who wanted to fight Gilles, before anything happened? The Pens didn’t run Grabner? Run Okposo into the net, at least three different runs at Nielson and AMac.
It’s pathetic when everyone on the Pens broadcast laughing it up at the Isle and DiP’s injury. NOT so funny anymore. When you constantly kick someone they eventually KICK BACK.

So now this is going to turn into the Islanders are not only doormats but now childish, undisciplined, and the dirtiest team in the league. 9 Games is ridiculous, but to me it was worth every punishment. That was the best game I have ever seen as young islanders fan. The heart they showed has pulled me back into the season.

  140. avatar moonshine says:

i was at the game friday night and i didn’t get fined by the league! i guess i got lucky.

ok, so the nhl put a big focus on martin and gillies. i don’t get, though, how a goalie can come floating out to the blue line when there’s altercations, which johnson did two games in a row with the islanders, and it’s not even mentioned. it seems to me that if the islander management is responsible for its own, someone on the other side should make sure that goalie stays in his crease.

i also think something should be done about the verbal cheap shots from the pittsburgh side. those should be controlled by their organization too, and fines are warranted for orpik’s talk.

pittsburgh’s franchise has been on the brink of disappearing before, and got a lot of help and attention fron the league. say what you will about the islanders, but they’ve always stood on their own two feet. that alone gets more respect than anything pittsburgh has.

  141. avatar ts22 says:

The ISLES should play QUIET RIOTS SONG with the chorus “WERE NOT GOING to TAKE IT ANYMORE”

  142. avatar Jtorbust says:

The boys went to bat now it’s time for Wang And snow to step up…..

  143. avatar Terry 99 says:

Colin Cambell never gives the isles slack in these cases. No penalties for the penguins except for Goddard? Newsday states Cambells son cracked someones head open with an elbow this year and was not given anything. I guess headshots only count when it’s not a family member. Cambells a disgrace and has been for years. Replace the Rags for the isles in this case and the penalties would be less severe. No doubt about it.

  144. avatar Priest says:

I guess I read the rule book wrong but I thought it was very clear that the pens had a mandatory fine of $10,000. (if this was the first offense in the last 3 years) for Godard leaving the bench. Ridiculous that the league would overturn that.

  145. avatar Isle be a Fan says:

Of-course Larry Brooks of the NY Post has to write a Buzz Killing article today about no chance the Isles stay.

  146. avatar MarioGazz says:

I’ll accept all that was handed down. But to see them get away with nothing is bullsh*t!!!!!!! They have been pampered for the last 6 yrs and also when Lemieux was in the league. The best thing to happen next is Garth making a statement saying that they have no problem with the fines and suspensions and that the Isles are willing to keep paying them if teams fu*k with us.

  147. avatar greg h says:

Believe the Comments Bloody Skull, we are all Islanders, we are the Die Hards, we will defend this team even though we might hate everything about them at times. We never get any protection from the league or refs, ever, period. Welcome to the Wild Wild West, otherwise known as the Coliseum, where we have now taken the law in our own hands because the refs and the league will not take responsibility into their own hands.
I for one agree with everyone’s sentiments that it is ridiculous that the pens were not fined and Bylsma was absolved from anything, WHY? Poster Franchise Pets, getting away with everything but Murder, oh wait, lets go ask Savard and Tyutin. Repeat offenders who never receive anything but a slap on the wrist. They complain about fielding AHL players, well that happens, you are still in it to win and were clearly outplayed in every facet. The broadcasters (laughing publicly on air humiliating another Franchise) and their newspapers are a joke. Also, look at the NHL.com main page a full section on a Bus breaking down in NYC but a little little blurp in the corning of them getting demolished by the Isles.
It was well worth it. I will leave it this.

  148. avatar JP91 says:

The league lets the Pens get away with everything because of #87. It’s about time a team went into a game with them with an attitude and not willing to take it. I’m proud to say that team was our New York Islanders. And it’s not like we lost the game and got embarrassed on the scoreboard — we beat them in every aspect of the game and they deserved every ounce of what they got.

I’m very proud of our boys. Gillies, Martin, Konopka, everyone! Don’t take anything from anyone. We are NOT the doormats of the league. We can match up with any team on any night. Now let’s take this win and beat down and move on for the positive and build from here.

    LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!!!

  149. avatar warren says:

Campbell was a dirty player as I remember, a real sneaky runt. He also was a Ranger. It figures he ends up as a bureaucrat for the NHL as compared to working for a team as many former NHL’ers do. And Bettman is a disgrace, and always has been. I was there when Dale Hunter ran Pierre Turgeon into the boards after he scored the GW goal, and all that he gave out was 20 games (and no fines if I am not mistaken). Thanks to people like Campbell and Bettman, I have not attended games in years, but thanks to Friday’s game, I will be returning to the Coliseum soon. So to Campbell and Bettman “”****U”. It is the world against us, and we become tigers when we are attacked by all the powers.

  150. avatar JP91 says:

Also — I never thought I would say this — but just for today’s game, I hope the Rangers beat the Pens down even further…

  151. avatar Csimiami says:

Havnt stepped foot in coliseum in 3 years despite living few minutes away cause i hate the owner. Just stub hubbed the penns game in april 16 bucks. I think league should change elbow pads to pillow type cushions instead if hard plastic. These concussions would be cut in half. I dont like seeing concussions..

  152. avatar terry b says:

we all expected this im supprised gillies/martin werent sent to death row,no chance of parole.garth should bring back a real heavy(who can play) simon,,,,,ps bab bassen is a mo

  153. avatar moonshine says:

i do not understand how the league can have a head of discipline whose son plays for one of the teams. nothing personal, but it’s doesn’t seem appropriate.

if the league sends a relatively inexperienced crew to officiate this game (and honestly they did seem a little overmatched) it just shows the general attitude: what happened last week in pittsburgh was supposed to be no more than a little joke.
if bylsma didn’t prepare his team, it’s for one simple reason: no one thought the islanders had it in them. pittsburgh thought, ‘we’ll roll in there, if we play our worst possible game maybe those guys beat us 3-2, and it’ll make them feel a little better.’

as for the role of ‘management,’ if the islanders are supposed to drill certain things into their players, pittsburgh should make sure theirs understand not to come off the bench or out of the goalie crease. that’s pretty basic stuff too.

  154. avatar NYISLES001 says:

Screw Cambell and screw the Penguins or any other team the tries to intimidate us.

And that means you Philadelphia fans also.

  155. avatar NYISLES001 says:

Maybe Collin Campbel should issue warnings on players from other that take cheap shots at Taveras every game.

  156. avatar mick12 says:

Expecting justice out of Colin Campbell is like expecting 50 goals in 50 games by Oleg Kvasha! Way to go Isles! Way to stand up for one another. Its us against the world. Hey Garth sign Zenon to an extension now. Hey 119 I just can’t route for NYR & have my self respect.

  157. avatar streit02 says:

Wow, the NHL stoops to a new low. I dont even have a problem with the suspensions. Although I feel Martin did nothing wrong, its not the end of the world. But to fine the Islanders 100,000 dollars and accusing them of not being able to control their players is hilarious. Pittsburgh has guys jumping off the bench, but they arent mentioned at all. Guess they werent watching the same game as us. Really is the biggest bullsh!t ive ever seen in my life. Why didnt Montreal and Boston receive any team fines? If i were the Isles id sign 4 more tough guys and just play them the rest of the season. Just beat the crap out of everyone. Screw the NHL. Wheres Bill Clement when you need him?

  158. avatar Orange&Blue says:

If those are the criteria for a suspension then where is Max Talbot’s suspension? Comeau took a deliberate blow to the head when he was not suspecting it. Furthermore, he has been out of the lineup since that game with a concussion. Rule is a rule. Suspend Max Talbot!!

How come Matt Cooke, a frequent offender, only got 4 games for the hit on Tyutin? Where was his 9 game suspension? That hit was much worse than Gillies hit on Tangradi. In fact, Cooke’s hit was charging and boarding! This was Gillies first offense. How many has Cooke had? Half a dozen at least.

The NHL needs to be run fairly and consistently and it isn’t. That is why players are taking the law in their own hands and fans like us are irate!!

CB, please address this situation with every reputable NHL writer that you can. It is not fair and word needs to spread. Id like you to get one of those idiots on the NHL on the Fly show on and ask them how they are defending Pitt? Making it out to be the poor Penguins! Its disgusting!!

  159. avatar Is it Spring Training Yet? says:

Whew…the way some idiots on other nhl sites were comparing martin to bertuzzi incident, nad add on top that campbell hates us i though martin might be in big trouble. Love Gillies but he usually sits out every other 9 games anyway. Nothing for Haley-which i believe is right-but didnt think campbell and bettmen would see it that way. Well Worth it! Like someone said earlier we should have signed Cambells son, we would have gotten no suspensions at all.

  160. avatar Steven says:

I agree 120. Larry would love for the Isles to move so his beloved Rangers get even more attention.

  161. avatar TURNUPTHE HEAT says:

It was about time the players took a stance. Watching Tavares pick himself up off the ice after getting laid out was starting to be a very familiar scene game in and game out. As for Mr. Campbell, why should we suprised? We are the doormat of the NHL. Why would he want to upset his friend Mario? If this entire situation has your blood boiling, call the NHL office at 212-789-2000. Leave a voicemail on Mr. Campbell’s mailbox.

  162. avatar Lean Cugine says:

Gllies gets 9 games for leaving feet hitting a guy. Cooke only four games when he has already ended one career-savard and hit tyutin from behind leaving his feet-try to paralyze him-doesn’t add up.

  163. avatar James says:

You should not expect any thing else from Colin Campbell…He will always be unfairly harsh on any suspect incident involving the Islanders…What about the blow to the head of Blake Comeau and the fact that he suffered a concusion??? That is OKAY??? Hey Bettman how about being fair to all teams…Or are certain teams given preferential treatment???? Meanwhile you have that dirtbag Cooke hanging on to minimal suspensions; I don’t get it???? LET’S GO ISLANDERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  164. avatar Luvs19 says:

Winning will bring pride back to the Islanders. Melees, suspensions and fines serve no useful purpose. It’s over, move on. Now it’s time to do something to keep the Islanders in NY when the coliseum lease expires. Quebec City beckons.

    Happy Valentines Day.

  165. avatar kevin b. says:

I wanted to chime in about the suspensions after the game between the Isles and the Penguins. The reactions everywhere, aside from Islander positive places, has been over the top.

I feel the fact that Daniel Paille’s (sp?) hit was talked about all across the NHL network and Talbot’s hit was not mentioned, to me, shows how the Penguins get the benefit of the doubt. The Islanders deserved to have some form of punishment but the NHL also needs to recognize they were the ones who caused this game to happen. If there would have been some attention paid to Talbot’s hit on Comeau and a suspension or fine I truly feel the Islanders would not have reacted so venomously.

Obviously I am an Isles fan but I try to look at the games and league as a whole as fairly as I can. The fact that Talbot’s hit was not addressed by the NHL while Paille’s was, really made no sense. Talbot took at least three steps and went north south on Comeau same as Paille and same as Gilles.

If the Isles players felt they were not going to be pushed around, taken advantage of and ignored by the league I think they would cooled off a bit. Again these players should have been suspended but this did not need to happen. The league could have defused the situation by suspending Talbot especially knowing there was a game within a week of the incident. It is not a guarantee this would have been the case but drawing attention to it would have given everyone involved a different perspective.

I do feel that the Penguins get the benefit if the doubt. Mostly I feel this is personified in calls for penalties when Crosby is involved. As you know in many leagues the star players do get the benefit of the doubt. Baseball players will get balls and strikes to go their way if they are marquee players. Look at how Jeter got the call when he faked being hit by that pitch. Ok being a good actor also helped with that one. I understand that marquee players will get the calls but I think in this case it came back to bite all the parties involved.

I do hope that Garth Snow puts together a similar tape to the one Mike Mulbury during the 2002 Toronto series made of missed calls and cheap shots. That would send a message, I think, that the organization is behind its players to the fans and show the league that MORE needs to be done about these kind of plays. I hope that the upcoming final hone game does not devolve into another circus. I hope that no other players get hurt. I want the Isles to come together and get a huge boost from this. This could really be a big step toward building this team for the future. That does not mean i condone this type of behavior, although I do feel it is silly to call this incident ugly while calling the Boston Montreal game “Old Time Hockey”, in the least. It just seems that this shows the players they are all there for each other even if no one else may be.

It seems that Colin Campbell and Gary Bettman have been, in my opinion, a bit unfair to the Isles. Let’s take this game and turn it into a good winning streak to build something for next season and many to come.

    Let’s Go Islanders!!!

  166. avatar John F says:

Colin Campbell is a total joke. His progeny, Greg, plays for the Bruins yet the NHL sees no conflict with Mr. Campbell dispensing discipline to players. Greg Campbell partook in the Montreal brawl the other night in Boston but somehow his father felt no discipline was needed. As for the Penguins, Bylsma should have been fined for failure to control his team. Johnson Orpik and Talbot should have been fined but Campbell felt they dropped their purses ran their nylons, so that was adequate punishment.

  167. avatar hockeytime says:

The fine shows Campbell’s bias. I thought the suspensions would be longer so I am ok with that. I hate Orpik now, he should be targeted next. Someone put him through the goal please. The Cooke Karma comes around though. Malkin career will never be the same with a MCL and ACL tear. Crosby will become the next Savard and I hope that ruins the NHL’s pride and joy franchise.

  168. avatar Jmig says:

Chris or anyone, is there any type of discipline for the penguins announcers to face or can face? If you watch the 17 min. clip on youtube, the things that they were saying were obsured, made me cringe. In my opinion they should lose there jobs.

  169. avatar Orange&Blue says:

Anyone hear what the 2 morons who do play by play for the Penguins were saying? They played it on Hockey Night Live last night. Where is their suspension? They shouldnt be allowed in the NVMC ever again!

Max Talbot’s hit met all the of Colie’s criteria for an illegeal head shot. Where is his suspension? Fair is fair!

I wonder how Bruno Gervais feels about all this? Max Talbot is his best friend.

Why did a repeat offender Matt Cooke get 4 games and a first time offender like Gillies gets 9 games? Cooke’s hit on Tytutin was much worse than Gillies hit on Tangradi.

  170. Looking forward to seeing the Islanders play today. It’s time to put up or shut up. They really need to take it to the net today, or Fridays events and the consequences will be meaningless. Having said that, it pains me that I would like them to score today against my favorite Spartan, Ryan Miller

  171. avatar 50 in 50 says:

100K fine isn’t a great deal but lets rewind to Ottawa and Philly March 5th 2004. 20 players ejected, over 419 penalty minutes. This game doesn’t even come close. No significant fines or suspension resulted from that game yet once again we are hit for failure to control the team. Byslma “allowed” Godard to leap the boards yet gets nothing. Cappy watched his team stick up for itself and takes 100K out of Emperor Wangs pocket book. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since Collie is a Ranger Rag and Canuck cry baby… 8 Penguin Players left at the end of the game. 12 Islander players left at the end of the game. Game Misconducts got the rest. I have seen alot in my time. It once again proves to the entire NHL and the entire Hockey World that Gary Buttman and “Colon” Campbell are real douches.

  172. avatar Greg Halvorsen says:

I suuport the Islanders 100% !!!!!!!!!!! well werth the price we will pay !!!!! Great job guys ……I am once again a proud Islander fan

  173. avatar NYisles81 says:

When Matt Cooke lays a dirty hit on Campbells son and paralyze’s him maybe Colon will take notice. Who am i kidding Cooke doesn’t hit guys that can actually stand up for themselves and fight. Gutless Puke!

  174. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

Chris – How about inviting the Pens announcers on your show for a segment?
Their comments may have been fueled by emotion, but were out of line and un-professional.

  175. avatar DenP says:

I have no problem with the discipline! The fine ? Please! This is routine for all pro sports. The teams on top get treated different. Look since the HBO thing the Pens have gone Hollywood, skating at Central Park is another example. The NHL is protecting their current “golden boys”.

As for the haters that focus on our position in the standings. Since December, in spite of injuries we have won a lot of hockey games with a talented you team. Serve notice we can score and we will take it to you phiscally. When you play the Isles you better be prepared to play.

Even if it hurt our image a bit league wide, don’t really think it did though, it brought the team and it’s fans together! Let’s Go Islanders!

  176. avatar battfist says:

I dnt know who’s worse for their sport- Bettmans crew or Seligs crew?! Suspensions were fair-but a 100K fine?! What a joke.

  177. avatar TimQ says:

I think that Snow should make a statement by challenging the Gillies suspension and team fine. Challenge Campbell on the precedent for 9 games for that hit, relative to other recent examples (e.g. Cooke). Also challenge the one-sided fine when the Pens coach wasn’t controlling his players jumping off the bench. Snow can demonstrate some of his own passion by telling the league we aren’t going to let you treat us like doormats either.

  178. avatar THE PORK CHOP EXPRESS says:

I thought the suspensions were going to more. The league always likes to set examples of the Islanders. I really hope snow and players expressed their feelings on why Friday’s events occurred. The league is only to blame itself for these recent brawls. Consistent rule enforcing is very important and the league has shown it cannot do that. To be honest gilles suspension should be for that type of hit (1st time offender) and doubles for repeat offenses. That would keep scum like cooke off the ice or at least control him. Pretty much I would like to hear campbell explain the difference between cooke (100 time) and gillies (1st time) hit. If I was Bettman and wanted to end the horrid hits to head, Cooke would now be suspended 30-50 games for all his garabage. Going forward I hope the league uses Gillies suspension as a stepping stone and punish the same way. Of course that will not happen and when a dirtbag player performs a similar hit they will only get 4 games. Going forward I believe Martin’s hit should be 10 games as well.

Also the league needs to have a hearings/discussions with Pitts. They are far from innocent in Friday’s events. They are one of the leagues dirtest teams. I would say 90% of the team are thugs. Other than Martin’s, Gillies’, Haley’s first fight, Pitts. players started the fight (i.e. the guy cross checking macdonald, dupuis, Rupp, godard, orpik cross checking grabs, letang, slashing and cross checking JT, Johnson.)

  179. avatar Frank James says:

I’m doing my part towards the 100K.
I’m buying 4 tix to a game I wouldn’t have because the Isles became a team.
Garth should have one of those Milbury video shows whenever our players get run and nothing is called.
If you can’t win all your games at least stand up for each other- Friday they took that step.

  180. avatar Blizzard says:

9 games too much for Gillies when the repeat offender in Cooke gets what 4? The fine is for trying to stick up for themselves against the Penguins. Oh well very much worth it in the end.

  181. avatar Michael says:

People like Bettman and Campbell are precisely why the NHL is almost irrelevant in the US sports landscape and why they have to resort to having games broadcast on Versus.

As far as Brooks is concerned, let’s not condemn him for stating what is probably true. Wang is the culprit here. He’s used the Isles as leverage for something more lucrative for him personally.

Brooks is right. What is his back-up plan now that the Lighthouse is essentially dead?

  182. avatar A Real hockey fan says:

.. I have never been SOOOOO PROUD of my Fellow Islander fans

.. We are showing the double standards and hypocracy of this league with rational, logic, and facts, something this league has NONE OF!

.. This “ruling” (Or should i say FARCE) is 1 of the reasons the NHL cant be found with a GPS system (lower ratings than NASCAR + POKER) and the crybaby clueless national media which decries the physical part of the game — When was the last time a writer or annnouncer paid $$$ to attend a game and support the league? when? anyone? The fans love the physical side of the game (biggest cheers are goals, saves, hits and fights – FACT) yet the know nothing-pay nothing media frowns on it every chance they get!

.. I rarely watch games because of the snore ZZzzz boring games with no emotion or intensity, if u had some more passion in the game you would have more fans, plain and simple!

.. btw where is the NHLPA on these rulings? HELLO? ANYONE? What kind of players unions allows this 2 happen to there members, 1 set of rules for 1 and another set of rules for another, the league clearly has a “bullseye” on certain players (physical types) and teams! – Wake up NHLPA and address this farce!

.. Again im soooooo proud of all the posts i have read here, using logic, reason and facts to expose the hypocracy of this league! BRAVO ISLE FANS BRAVO!! :-)

  183. avatar Chrism says:

  184. avatar ts22 says:

No double standard by Colin ass** Staal hits someone in the head with his glove and that’s ok? WE DON’T want special treatment, we want the calls to be made right, not by the name on jersey or the team crest.

Good news – looks like Comeau’s been taken off IR.
Better news: looks like the Islanders are worth watching again.
Proud again to be an Islander fan.

  186. avatar drive4five says:

I’ll put a grand on it. Isles are issued a warning before the April 8th game and Pitt is not.

  187. avatar rick says:

anyone notice that we have 3 islanders on the league leader list for goals. 3 in the top 30. this obviously doesn’t mean much since we are not winning too many games, but i think last game was a turning point….

  188. avatar Jim From EI says:

yeah campbell your doing a bang up job, I mean hitting to the head is way down this year. keep giving cooke 2/4 games a pop that is really stopping him. How about fining the NHLquins 10K every time he hits someone in the head or from behind for failure to control him(I mean he already ended Savards career but I can see how people would rather watch your boy cooke instead of a class act like Savard). How about suspending your son for using a elbow pad as a weapon. But of course no bias in your decisions. No fines or suspensions from the Mon/Bos game either- hun. I hope the Islanders go out and do it again just to say F-YOU to both you and the other Dhead bettman. You two are a joke and part of the problem with hockey being more mainstream and not the answer.

  189. avatar Pete says:

It was well worth it to prove to all the nhl teams and our fans that the Isles will no longer be pushed around. When was the last time the Isles got so much publicity like this other than bashing us???Yes its old time hockey people who were lucky enough to attend this game will never forget it and tell there grand kids about this.I don’t understand how Johnson does get suspended he started the Dp fiasco taunting him at the blue line and again in this scrum standing there trying to bait the young russian goalie to fight I am glad Haley went after him but he gets nothing.Bettman you are a lame duck comish you are worthless and thats why hockey has a bad rep because you don’t promote the sport and are blind to whats going on.I bet the next game the pens come here it will be a sellout and the Isles will make that 100 grand back.Fans will come if they are entertained you want attendance keep playing hard nosed hockey then they will fill the stands don’t tell me they won’t because of the building. The building is fine just play tough give us something to cheer about.Fort Neverloose forever lets play em tough.Proud of my team for the first time in aloooong time thanks Isles….

  190. avatar D in BIG D says:

Pens get off the hook again.Gillies does not have the history of Cook but yet gets more games.NHL can spin this anyway they want. There is a serious bias in this league almost to the point they can be accussed of Vegas-like actions. After all they practically handed the Pens their success based on how their games are officiated, their earlier years draft positioning, the financial bailout of a floundering franchise, etc, etc.Hockey is an emotional game and once that is removed the games are no longer exciting.I’d be curious to hear what Mad Mikes take is on this as well as Don Cherrys.Oh by the way 141 its Twisted Sister not Quiet Riot,LOL.

  191. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

At the end of the day we need an arena deal or plans to refurbish the NVMC w/or without Charles.

  192. avatar JD says:

I hope Wang realizes the importance of Friday night. The players showed they are tired of the bottom dweller status and stuck up for each other and the franchise in ways that a lot of us have never seen before. Do us a favor Charles. Find a way soon to keep this team where it belongs so we can shut up the critics once and for all. Your team showed some serious pride wearing those Islander jerseys. Do the same for them and us diehards.

  193. avatar okie21 says:

“The actions by the Islanders’ Gillies and Martin were deliberate attempts to injure by delivering blows to the head of players who were unsuspecting and unable to defend themselves. The message should be clear to all players: targeting the head of an opponent by whatever means will be dealt with by suspension.”
Does the NHL realize that between the Marc Savard hit (0 games) and the Fedor Tyutin hit(4) Matt Cooke has only been suspened a total of 4 games for his actions? Back in the pre season Cammalleri took a 2 handed swipe at Nino’s head, with his stick, which is a freakin weapon but missed and only got 1 game for the follow up 2 handed across his legs……. I just can’t believe how soft the NHL and the people who cover it have gotten. Games like this wouldn’t be good on a night in night out basis, but Bettman should just remember that the last time the NHL was big and not just wathced by the die hards was when we were actually on a real network and the Redwings and Avalanche tried to kill each other every time they played for like 5 years. Games like the Isles Pens games could and would happen with those teams once maybe twice a year, yet it wasn’t a disgrace and every game was nationally telivised by espn with all the analyists saying what great old time hockey it was(and it was!!!)

  194. avatar gary says:

ive seen worse and less in suspension given out—Im surprised Pitts didnt have more on their side as it takes two to tango

  195. avatar Cappy says:

Save your $$$ drive4five. Pitt will get a warning too. Nothing will happen to them if they ignore it, but they will still get the warning … gotta make it seem fair going in. Still waiting on suspensions for the Islanders who caused the Penguin team bus crash.

  196. avatar Schultz39 says:

Maybe Brooks Or-prick should think the same of guys on his team who are also a bit famous for cheap shots, i.e. Matt Cooke, who already ended a career in Marc Savard and could’ve done the same with Tyutin.

Too bad Cindy Crosby wasn’t playing on Friday – we could’ve been beat him down too.

  197. avatar Ray says:

    100 k…..really….wheres the presedant for that one….

  198. avatar warren says:

Other things the Islanders could do: Prohibit the Penguins access to the Coliseum for practices/warmups. Celebrate goals in the Pittsburgh goal crease or area. Have the Islander fans notify the Penguins coaches, management and especially their broadcasters that “they are not welcome” here, and let them tread softly while on LI. And if the Islanders are obviously winning, they should keep ‘pouring it on.’ These things (particularly the on-ice items) will really show them the consequences of their goonery and conceit.

  199. avatar paislesfan says:

Unfortunately decisions by Campbell are made in the existing context – Cooke receives greater fine if Crosby and Malkin are in the lineup. Can’t decimate the golden boys by eliminating all of their entertainment value…

  200. avatar Fee-Show says:

Socrates #53…LMAO, line of the year! :)

Too bad the announcers are up in the luxury booth section. Back in the day when they sat by the cameramen I used to love ragging on the ultimate homer, Gene Hart of Philly and of course “The Big Whistle”…”Hey Bill, who’s Middlebury?” I guess in today’s age these Pens’ homers would need to wear armor!

Can’t say I’m surprised by the suspensions, and the Isles will make up the 100K+ in tix sales for April 8th alone.

I e-mailed Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Gazette and asked him to thank the Pens for bringing the Isles together as a team. Also asked him if Fleury was still laughing?

I hope the Islanders beat up Gregory Campbell sometime soon…no justice with their suspensions and fine.
Orpick will get his too if he ever man’s up and drops the gloves.
    Haley…you legend!!!
Colin Campbell is the same thing Carlos Tevez call Gary Neville. Can’t print it here.

#150: don’t get carried away. Rags must lose always. It’s part of the credo if your an Isles fan, c’mon man!

  203. avatar Michael says:

colin time to get over the ASS KICKING your team took in the 82 finals!
Bill Berg is a HORRIBLE announcer as he was a HORRIBLE hockey player someone who only got his shot at the NHL because of the Isles!

The inequity of the punishments, including the way penalties are (and aren’t) called as well as the suspensions and fines, is exactly why “Frontier” justice is still necessary in the league. Good on the Islanders for sticking up for each other.

Mr. Wang should probably have mixed feelings on the matter — he’ll get more cashflow because of this, but clearly his team has no respect.

  205. avatar Pablo says:

Colin Campbell was a horriable hockey player,a terriable coach, and his legacy still follows him in his current position.

I don’t think cambell ever got over Brendon Witt’s comments years ago! lol

Charles Wang can afford this 100k, besides he wont spend on players so why not INVEST IN SOME HEART !!!

  206. avatar Fred says:

Well we knew it was going to happen. I don’t think Campbell needed to take the extra dig at the Islanders and as far as the Penguins go, having a player come off your bunch during the middle of a fight is exactly not being able to control their team.

I think what Martin and Gillies did was over the line but for the NHL to absolve the Penguins of any wrong doing just further demonstrates a double standard in the league and lack of transparency by Campbell’s office.

    Still worth it.

    # 141, “We’re not gonna take it” is by Twisted Sister – Long Island’s own.

I actually would love to hear this at the next home game, very appropriate.

And there is today’s lesson in 80′s hard rock anthems kids :)

  208. I’ve been a fan for almost 30 years now, and after witnessing “THE GAME!!!” the other night, it is both my duty and an honor to attend more games this year and scream until I rupture something.

  209. avatar JT says:

Garth and the players should appeal this just to make a point. Campbell is a joke. Cooke gets nothing and Isles are made an example of?

All in all, the team did the right thing and Isles fans should be proud of them.

#77 I’ve been reading here for the last 20 minute’s, and not one post said he was a hero. That’s a strong word to use especially when no one wrote it, so Mr Pittsburgh fan take and keep your comment’s to yourself and all the gutless pukes on your team. I’m by no way saying the Isles were angel’s Friday night, but the bottom line you can only take so much disrespect from other team’s (getting laugh at i.e. M A Fluery) and of course getting NO RESPECT from the NHL: what so ever. SO on like certain team’s (pitts)and a few other’s the Isles don’t get any respect from the league so in this case they took matters into there own hand’s.
Is it right I would say no but when the league looks the other way and does nothing (TALBOT’s Hit) then this what they get. And one last thing how can one team be fined $100,000 and the other not one cent, and the Mont/Boston game the other night not one fine to either team. So here you have one team the league say’s didn’t control there team(Isles)and get fined but there three other team’s that didn’t lose a cent. In the world of the Colons court I guess that make’s sense NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  211. no surprise here at all..was worth it..especially considering pens fans saying they wanted more..crybaby pen fans..though I heard, the reason the pens weren’t fined, crosby said he wouldn’t come back and play again in the nhl.

  212. avatar Mike from Philly says:

C.B. – Any reaction to the depressing piece from Larry Brooks today?

  213. konokpa backed up his words. If the league wasn’t going to do it. Then the Islanders did it. Well, the league should be ashamed of themselves, they just got their darling team embarrassed and whupped the whole night. BEAUTIFUL AND JUSTICE SERVED. Thank you to the players.

  214. avatar Clark Kent says:

should be a starting point: The isles must play a tough game from here on out–to a man on the team. This blog is filled with the “we need an enforcer” all summer–yet, somehow, the coaches/gm forget half way through the year. Last good memory for Isles fans? Cairns decking Corson…we need Webbs, Cairns, Gillies, etc…
