SNOW UNABLE TO MOVE KONOPKA, MARTINEK
Deadline thread: NYI couldn’t get their price

by Chris Botta on February 27th, 2011 at 3:18 pm

4:00 pm: After making their two big moves two months ago, the Islanders made none at the trade deadline other than losing Rob Schremp on waivers and calling up Justin DiBenedetto.

Garth Snow wanted to deal Zenon Konopka, but knew he couldn’t dump the fan and player favorite for merely a mid-round draft pick. He sent out word through the media that a few teams were interested, but could not start a bidding war. There was little chance any team was going to give up a second round pick for Konopka, and no one called Snow’s bluff. When Anaheim moved on and traded a third round pick for Brad Winchester, Snow didn’t have any strong offers.

Radek Martinek was available, but Snow was unable to get the second round pick he required. The defenseman’s long injury history, which includes the present, made it impossible for Snow to ask for much.

In the final analysis for the season’s dealings, Snow did okay for his club. There was no goalie market, so getting a decent prospect for Dwayne Roloson was as good as the general manager was ever going to do. He also saved ownership a lot of money by moving Roloson with more than three months left in the season. The market for defensemen was busy, so maybe Snow could have got a bit more than a 2 and 5 for James Wisniewski. Still, he again saved his team a lot of money by moving him in December and it’s doubtful he would have gotten much more for the struggling defenseman.

Thanks to everyone for checking out Point Blank. I’ll see you tomorrow with a video interview from SNY that I believe you’ll enjoy. (CB)

3:30pm: TSN reporting LI native Chris Higgins traded to Vancouver for Evan Oberg and a pick. Also reporting that the Caps have acquired Jason Arnott from Jersey for David Steckel and 2nd rounder.

3:20pm: Isles announce that they have recalled Justin DiBenedetto from BP. 15G and 23 PTS in 40 games this season in the A.

3:08pm:

@KateStrangNYI: #Isles officially done.

3:00pm: TSN is reporting the Leafs have dealt John Mitchell to the Rangers.

2:45pm: Only 15 minutes to go until the deadline but remember trades can still filter through to our ears well after 3 PM if they’re submitted to the league in time. (KS)

2:25 pm: Dustin Penner to LA for first rounder, Teubert and another pick. Brad Winchester to Anaheim, so options for Konopka getting slimmer.

2:00 pm: Chris Campoli to Chicago for pick and prospect. He has to be overjoyed. Smart pickup by Hawks.

1:00 pm: Bob McKenzie – Klesla to Coyotes for Lepisto and Upshall.

12:55 pm: We’ll find out in the next two hours if the Islanders were able to get value for Konopka and Martinek. Anaheim still the leader of a very small group of teams interested in ZK. A half-dozen teams bidding for RM. Snow wants at least 2s for both.

12:05 pm: Rob Schremp claimed by Atlanta. Wideman to Caps for prospect and a 3.

11:05 am: NHL source tells Point Blank that Konopka to the Ducks is a “possibility.”

10:40 am: Apparently, Atlanta no longer viewed Niclas Bergfors as a strong prospect. Traded to Florida for Radek Dvorak.

10:15 am: A Canucks source to Point Blank a minute ago: “I’ve heard the rumors, but Zenon Konopka is not high on our wish list. He’s not even in the middle of our list.”

10:10 am: If the Islanders move Zenon Konopka today, it will confirm that they didn’t believe the Friday war against the Penguins was any big deal, along with my suspicions that management is not a big fan of Konopka.

Monday, 9:30 am: The countdown to the possible farewell of Radek Martinek from the Islanders begins in earnest. If Garth Snow can get a 2 for him, have to believe Martinek will be on the move. Plenty of teams need a depth defenseman today, including Chicago, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh. (CB)

11:40 pm: Good pickup by Buffalo. Brad Boyes from St. Louis for a 2.

11:00 pm: Chris Phillips re-signs for three years with Ottawa. Good to see a respected veteran and solid player stay when the ship is leaking.

9:00pm: TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the Canucks have an interest in Konopka. Says that in general they’re looking for a “big, tough… FO artist”. Sounds like someone we know:

@TSNBobMcKenzie: OTT’s Chris Neil may be touch too rich but you never know. NYI Zenon Konopka may be person of interest for VAN. Good on faceoffs/team guy.

(KS)

7:30pm: I see a lot of questions in comments about potential trades and value. I’ll throw out some opinions. Personally, who I think could be moved outside of the three CB outlined below…. Nobody. There’s obviously a certain “core” that will be kept unless Garth gets blown away by an offer (and I doubt any such offers will/do exist). We know who they are.

There’s also a group that has little or no trade value. Gervais and Hillen won’t really bring back anything. Even if they could be traded, they’re probably worth, at the least, holding onto for the depth. Comeau could have some value but he’s probably part of the core and, again, isn’t worth giving up for the 5th (?) round pick he would be worth. Honestly, “3rd line winger” isn’t really at the top of a lot of shopping lists. And in terms of trading Islanders picks, especially first rounders, no. No. There’s no guarantee any Isles first rounds picks in the coming year(s) are going to be outside of the Top 5. So that’s more valuable than anything else and not worth parting with. Imagine how it feels in Toronto to watch the Bruins draft Tyler Seguin in 2010 and still have another lottery pick to use in 2011.

However, as I wrote last week I’m pretty optimistic about where this team could be next year. There’s a nice bunch of forwards with an impact player in the WHL who could be ready in September. If the defense can stay healthy, it’s solid. The biggest issues heading into training camp will likely be between the pipes. (KS)

6:30pm: Schultz here. All quiet so far today across the NHL. Maybe NHL GMs are preparing for their Oscar parties? No? Anyway, I’ll be here for the next few hours in case anything happens. I’ll also be around in the comments and you can always catch me on Twitter. My prediction is a quiet deadline since we’ve already seen so much action over the past few weeks and months. (KS)

5:00 pm: Before we go any further, let’s make one thing perfectly clear! Just because Schultz and I are hosting this marathon deadline blog post, it doesn’t mean we’re counting on anything major happening specific to Islanders Country. No false advertising here. All you have to do is read below and read my post from Friday morning on Martinek, Konopka and Schremp to see where expectations have been set. Fair enough? Don’t say we didn’t tell you. It’s hockey, so have fun with it. (CB)

3:15 pm: “If Garth wants to move Martinek, he’ll have no problem doing it.” This was an NHL assistant general manager to Point Blank on Sunday morning. He estimated there are at least four teams interested, including his own. The likely price for the future UFA defenseman is a late second round pick or a prospect. Getting both for Martinek would be a coup for Snow, but it’s possible when you see the prices already paid for defensemen over the last month. (CB)

3:00 pm: The NHL trade deadline is 24 hours from now. Garth Snow traded his two biggest chips – Dwayne Roloson and James Wisniewski – before the season was half-over, but there are still moves the Islanders can make. Join Chris Botta and Kevin Schultz as we post league trades and analysis right until the deadline and, since deals are often completed late, beyond.

In a market in which Tomas Kaberle brings back a good prospect, a first round pick and a conditional second round pick, anything can happen. Kris Versteeg was traded for first and third round picks. Brian Burke also acquired a strong defense prospect for Francois Beauchemin, so he maximized his chips. Mike Fisher also returned a first round pick for Bryan Murray, who once traded a first rounder for Chris Campoli. Even the Ian Whites and Chris Kellys are snagging second round picks.

After trading Roloson for Ty Wishart and getting a 2 and a 5 for Wisniewski, could Snow spring a surprise before the trade deadline? We want to hear from you throughout, so thanks for participating.

NOTE: Unless a trade report is from a legitimate news source like Newsday, TSN, Sportsnet or ESPN, please do not insult our readers by bringing it here. Thank you.

A prospect and a late 2nd is a steal for martinek..

  5. avatar loaf says:

if isles do something besides trade for more picks, are there any good established players we could grab instead of doing our shopping over the summer

  6. avatar streit02 says:

Unless Snow moves Bailey and/or his 1st rounder (both of which he has stated he will not trade) there will be nothing significant coming to the Isles. That’s barring that Snow considers Bailey part of the young core which there hasnt been any reason to believe that he doesnt. Judging from Snow’s track record there should be nothing to be nervous about because he really hasnt made a bad trade since hes been here. Its only been good surprises from Snow so we’ll see what happens.

  7. avatar glenn says:

Hey Chris. Do you think Garth made a mistake trading Wisniewski and Roloson so early in the process? Do you think he could have gotten more by waiting until the deadline? How much of a factor did dumping their salaries play a part in when they were dealt?

  8. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

Can Neilsen be the teams second line centre? If so, would Snow consider trading Bailey?

  9. avatar Will C. says:

CB- Is Bailey in play? I see a lot of people saying they are liking him, even though here we are seeing him not grow this year. Thoughts?

  10. avatar JP says:

Does anyone see the Islanders get anything besides draft picks in return at the deadline?

  11. avatar Staten Islander says:

I wonder what Martinek and Comeau would fetch?

  12. avatar Chris A says:

What does the future hold for Montoya?

  13. avatar Dan says:

If Snow can land us a third 2nd round pick for Martinek I’ll drivc the guy to the airport myself. I like him, but I like 3 2nd round picks a heck of a lot better. Would be nice to see Garth get back inside the top 15 picks, a la De Haan, again this draft.

  14. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I have a feeling Garth is going to have another one of those shock the world moments.
Just a feeling it could be something smaller like trading a young, small puck mover he doesn’t need going forward like jack Hillen who could have very good value for a team like Washington who we saw last night has a hard time getting the puck up ice. It could also be something much bigger.

Whether he goes now or later I expect Comeau to not be an Isle come training camp, same for Bruno, Martinek, Schremp. I’d be thrilled if PA wasn’t.

    Snow’s shopping list should include.
    1) Heavy weight enforcer to develop (like a McILrath, can play and is a heavy).
    2) 2 skilled, large, tough, all zone dmen (more Hamonics).
    3) Additional picks in rounds 1-3. This adds quality depth and allows him to manuever in the draft.
    4) I believe the Isles have enough young forwards. Don’t need centers or wings unless there is a special talent.

I’d love to see Snow pry away another organizations almost NHL ready blue chip talent on defense.

Martinek put the time in the gym this summer, it showed, and thankfully it is going to help the Isles if Snow plays it right. Thank you for doing this Chris!

  16. avatar Jarrett says:

Any way we can land Dustin Penner from the Oilers?

  17. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

If Martinek can get a return of a late 2nd round pick or a good prospect then that move should be made yesterday. Come on Garth, pull the trigger.

Don’t see Snow reading Bailey. Don’t see him having value to make a good enough return right now. Besides, he’s still young and can develop into a player.

  18. avatar Jimmiehill says:

Dumping roleson and wiz months before deadline saved millions. Those who aren’t smart enough to make money, eventually learn how to save money.

  19. avatar D. Meng says:

CB – What’s the possibility of trading away a future 1st rounder, such as the 2012 or 2013?

  20. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

CB, I really don’t see the Isles doing anything this trade deadline. I am hoping to see Snow bring back a team’s prospect or two but I do not want additional picks. If Snow includes Bailey, Okposo, or any of the other “core” players I will be shocked. And if he does it better be for something that will make the team better immediately.

I think I got hooked on this blog when Ryan Smythe was traded to the Isles. I’ve been a huge fan since. Thanks CB and keep up the great work.

  21. avatar avann says:

Would be nice to see snow package up some of these picks and prospects for parise. I don’t think the devils can afford to pay him what he’s worth. And as hot as the Devils have been, their golden age is over and they may have to rebuild a bit

  22. avatar Doug F says:

    CB,

Do you think Bailey and one of the #2′s will get Penner from Edmonton? I’d like them do a deal where they would get a player that would be instrumental next season.

I’m thinking they need 4 NHL ready players to make the playoffs in 2012. I feel they need a #2 center (I like Neilsen but he would be better as a center for the checking line), a power forward, a puck moving center and an NHL experienced goalie. Montoya has done a great job so he might the one they sign.

    Your thoughts?

  23. avatar billy says:

i still think snow sold low on wiz, especially when we’ve seen such high draft picks getting tossed around but i do like the wishart trade.
i do believe wishart is not quite nhl ready but i have liked more than i’ve disliked of him.
i wholeheartedly agree that a pick and a prospect would be a dream trade for radek but will only expect a pick so as not to get hopes up haha
aside from martinek, i see 2 things happening 1) nothing major, if anything at all. 2) snow blindsides us with some crazy deal that blows people away.
i see no in between haha

  24. avatar Vic says:

Although I would never suggest trading away a top 5 pick, I would be more inclined to trade away picks for Weber rather than Parise. We need a monster like him on the back end who can score, hammer people and play phenominal defense. This statement also only applies if Nashville can’t resign him and we can for long term(ie. 5-6 yr. deal).

  25. avatar JT says:

Given the current market for dmen, would Garth have received more for the Wiz if he traded him closer to the deadline?

  26. avatar admin says:

Zach Parise is not getting traded (injured or not) before the deadline, so little point in discussing that at this point in time. He will also not be joining the Islanders this summer, so there’s little point in ever discussing it here! LOL, with apologies to Brian Compton…CB

  27. avatar 4theisles says:

Schremp would be a good swap for a 3rd round pik. Doubt anyone would want him for better than a 4th. I agree with Strummer that we need some big D, Where will we get them? We don’t have the goods to pull it off, which then raises the question why trade a very decent defensemen like Martinek?

  28. avatar JT says:

Do you see Garth trying to find a captain for this team or do you think he is on the roster already? I think it would be valuable to acquire a steady leader for this team, much like Iginla, Alfredsson, and Koivu have led their teams for years.

  29. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I am not understanding everyone’s interest in the very inconsistent Dustin Penner. If you could get him on the cheap maybe because of his size but he’s been on two teams now that don’t see him as a core guy. He only has 3 more points then Comeau so what would be the point? Has great size but doesn’t always use it.

  30. avatar joe says:

well 3 2nd rounders will give Snow some flexibility at the draft, he could easily move back into the 1st round and trade two second rounders. Just need to make sure he makes the right pick like he did with Brock….

  31. avatar admin says:

    (27) Schremp is available for free on waivers until noon on Monday, so no one is giving up a draft pick to get him…CB

  32. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

Can you see the Isles picking up Conklin on waivers and sending Lawson down if he slides through?

  33. avatar princetonace says:

Not sure if he has cleared yet, but any chance we would put a claim in on Conklin and ride a legit NHL goalie the rest of the year and help further build team confidence (not taking anything away from Montoya’s surprising play)?

  34. avatar Kbelanger33 says:

We need TOUGHNESS, whether it be now or in the offseason. The Isles will never win anything of significance with this lineup and CULTURE.

  35. avatar Lean Cugine says:

Hey #26, CB, tell us how you really feel. HAHA

  36. avatar Strummer's Army says:

OK let us play a game….which team’s assistant GM told Botta his team was interested in Martinek with at least 3 others? Off the top of my head assistant GM’s Botta-Bing knows well are Cheveldayoff in Chicago, Hextall in LA, and Jankowski in MOntreal. Who can add to the list?

  37. well if comeau goes, that might upset the players..afterall, wasn’t it talbots hit on comeau that brought on this toughness? konokpa wants to be here, so much so he would sign for the same amt and year like this year…el cheapo better sign him, its a great deal.

  38. avatar admin says:

    (36) Strum: Jankowski is not an asst GM in Montreal. And, believe it or not, I know guys in the league beyond the ones who onced worked for the NYI? For the better part of 20 years, just about everyone who works in the business sat in the Coliseum press box countless times…CB

  39. well a good gm would make those three teams in a bidding war over martinek, getting something more..though unfortunalely we have garth, so.

  40. what are the chances martinek gets traded to the rangers?

  41. avatar admin says:

Very disheartening that good fans still believe in the fairytale site that combines inventing rumors with taking other people’s work and ramping it up, then saying “see”! when the 1% actually happens. Believe all you want, but keep it far, far away from here…CB

  42. avatar Ethan K says:

I really don’t see Martinek getting a better return that Mccabe or Brewer, and I don’t see how Martinek has much value if rivet and boynton were waiver worthy.

  43. avatar admin says:

    (40) The Rangers are not interested in Radek, Michele. Now that they got McCabe cheaply, their focus is on a forward. There’s a good chance the NYR end up doing nothing major tomorrow. Radek could end up staying in the East, maybe even the division, but he won’t be in Manhattan…CB

  44. avatar David C says:

CB- I know that there are a lot of young guys who are available right now (i.e. Bogosian). Who do you see the Isles targeting, if anyone, who would fit the youth mold of the current team?

  45. avatar Chris Mc says:

I’d hate to see Martinek dealt because of all the hard work he has put in and the dedication he has shown to this organization. The excitement on his face a week ago was priceless. But if you don’t think he’s going to be here next year then you might as well deal him. Especially with the premium on D-men right now.

  46. avatar admin says:

Post updated at 5:00, setting expectations for trades well in advance so nobody can say they were misled! CB

  47. avatar Michael B. says:

Its important to be realistic about the moves we could conceivably make in the next 24 hours. Aside from Z and Martinek we don’t have anything aside from draft picks that we could part with to obtain any type of talent back. If Z and Martinek are not in the Islanders plans for next season then flip em for the highest pick we can get and move on. Realistically this season is a lost cause so why not salvage the assets that we can get, collect the high first round draft pick we earned from a twenty game losing streak and get ready to play hockey in October.

  48. avatar moonshine says:

i don’t see the great attraction in martinek for a punt on a prospect.
martinek is more than a propect already.
and getting prospects lengthens the time horizon.
you load up on prospects at the start of a rebuild, not when you think it’s finally moving along.
the only way that deal would work for me, is if it turns out to be a steal of historic proportions.

  49. avatar streit02 says:

Really not too much to discuss regarding the Isles here. I cant even think of a question to ask. The Isles virtually have zero assets that they can move to bring in anything worth discussing. Unless they trade Konopka nothing of significance is likely to happen. Always appreciate the insight though. Thnx Chris and Kevin

  50. avatar Michael Pastore says:

The Rangers per NY Daily News is in trade discussions for Brad Richards. If Richards is on the trading block he is a perfect fit for the Islanders. I would offer them a conditional trade: This years 1st round pick and Bailey if Richards signs with us before the draft. If he does not sign we give them this years 2nd round pick and Comeau. I think that will get it done.

  51. avatar Nyisles81 says:

Agree with #35 kbelanger. This team is more than 2 or 3 good players away from winning anything. The bigger picture is changing the islanders culture. The lack of team toughness year after year is scary. If it means changing the coach then so be it. But im afraid it starts with wang.

  52. avatar JJ says:

The Islanders are not trading for Brad Richards. Period.

I think all we should expect is Martinek being dealt for a 2nd rounder. If there’s a number of teams bidding, maybe we get a 2nd rounder and an half way decent prospect.

The Isles should not trade Z. He’s become important to this team, and should be brought back next season.

  53. avatar admin says:

    (50) Brad Richards is a pending UFA with a no-move clause. He wants to go to the Rangers and a few other teams, and has some interest in staying in Dallas. He does not want to join the Islanders. Your first offer is not happening, Michael, and Joe Nieuwendyk would hang up on you if you tried to make the second offer with Comeau…CB

  54. avatar Will says:

i just kinda hope something cool happens there are some big name RFAs that would be available for the right price and we have plenty of picks available, i know its all very wishful thinking but i just wanna set the end of this rebuild in motion by getting a big name player.(just like every islanders fan) oh well i guess one more year wont kill us, or will it

  55. avatar Michael B. says:

Let’s talk first round picks. I would be all for trading our first round pick this year for a proven player but is the trade deadline the time to do it or is this a move better suited for draft day? Much like what we tried to do a decade ago with the addition of Yashin and Peca, this team needs that one veteran player in his prime to be the face of the franchise. I don’t think he’s coming via free agency. You’re the GM, do you trade the pick or make the selection?

  56. avatar sean says:

why in gods name did we resign pa parentau i would have taken a 7th round pick for him he is an awful player that only has decent stats (for the islanders) because he plays with molsoun and tavares

  57. avatar gordy lane says:

just like every year someone will be traded and islander country will rip garth thinking that he did not even try to get that player. I am sure that he is making his calls and seeing what is available and if it makes sense then he will pull the trigger. but if every discussion starts with JT, Harmonic, KO, Nino and Dehann I think Garth will take a pass.

  58. avatar Jim M says:

Hey CB, would something like Comeau and 2012 1st round pick for Ales Hemsky seem unreasonable? I feel like he is exactly the type of player we want on JT’s wing. I know next year is his last in his contract but if he were to re-up I would be all for it.

  59. avatar Michael B. says:

Sean, I’m not a pick fan of P.A. either. The guy makes his living at the side of the net on the power play and bangs home rebounds. His skill set doesn’t get my all that excited when he carries the puck. I agree with you that another player is probably better suited for the job but Moulson and Tavares seem comfortable with him so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  60. avatar 91nyfan91 says:

I dont know why but I have a feeling martinek will be going to the flyers.

  61. avatar 4195mary says:

Would any very good team like the 1980 Isles have the guts to trade Harris AND Lewis for a Goring at the deadline in today’s NHL? Don’t think so.

  62. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Interesting that Isles had scouts at Rangers/TB game today. My guess is they are scouting TB and not the rags for a potential deal.

CB what scenario do you see evolving before tomorrow that may surprise some folks? I know you’ve stated firmly it is probably just the Martinek deal and perhaps Konopka if Snow is blown away but could you see a more suprising move like Comeau and Hillen?

  63. avatar Max says:

the isles should get what they can for Martinek and thats it we shouldnt look for a big splash just wait untill the offseason and try and sign Thomas Felischman to be our second line cetner and either Christan Ehroff or Eric Brewer to give us a solid top 4 d with striet hamonic and mcdonald

  64. avatar Blizzard says:

Its great to have this thread thanks CB…but as usual there will be no earth shattering moves by Garth…..but hey you never know…..

  65. avatar JP burger says:

It would be atrocious to move any of our core players especially the likes of Bailey and Comeau. We gotta build within our core it takes time to build chemistry,For example look at the Knicks they are suffering now with the few acquisitions they’ve made for crisis sakes they lost to Cleveland.and on note Garth should keep Martinek if he could not get atleast a 2nd rounder or decent prospect

  66. avatar claude says:

No veteran worth his salt is going to play here. I’d package martinek, baily and Jurcina(sorry, guy is twice the size of hillen and always on ir) for a pheuneuf, pronger type dman plus a 2nd rounder.

  67. avatar Kbelanger33 says:

anyone else a little bit sad to see mccabe in a ranger uniform?

  68. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Kbelanger #60 not at all. McCabe’s played so many places and been gone so long it’s easy to accept and have to be happy for his family who wanted for so long to be back near LI. Also, shows how serious he is about being on LI and should make it clear if Isles offer him a fair deal he’ll return.

I am surprised there hasn’t been more action or any today but any team.

  69. avatar The New Isles GM says:

Let’s just sit back and see what we get. We all know that we have to get bigger and meaner on D next year. It’s quite obvious we can’t clear the crease. Losing Martinek for a pick is a win in my book. After all, Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Datsyuk were 3rd, 5th, and 6th Round Picks. What do we really have to lose?

  70. avatar Frederick says:

I asked my two friends and had this same discussion with Mr Crystal Ball and Magic 8 Ball, and here is what they said…”Expectations Low”

  71. avatar Frederick says:

CB, i dont know if you have this information handy, but what is the average number of teams that DONT make moves on trade deadline day?

  72. avatar Jim says:

Just want to take a moment to say the following:

Garth Snow MUST resign Konopka. I’m not talking about a 1-year extension. I’m talking about a 3 or 4 yr extension. Konopka changed the culture of this team. Before Konopka came, players like Pronger and Phaneuf could beat the crap out of Tavares and Bailey, etc. and no one would do anything. Now we have Konopka and Martin. Konopka is a key piece…he is dynamite on faceoffs, too. Resign him Garth. For the sake of the fans. We’re all tired of watching our “young talent” get splattered all over the ice.

  73. avatar Dan says:

I would be surprised to see a move besides a Martinek trade. The hopes of making an amazing playoff push have all but dies due to this 3 game streak. We’ll have to stick to the status quo until draft day. As much as I hate to say it, its going to be a normal deadline for the Isles. They’re definately sellers.

  74. avatar James from Swindles says:

I’m not expecting much. Outside of the Smyth deal, Snow has been very quiet on deadline day. Unless he’s wowed with an offer, I don’t see Snow moving either of Marty or Konopka. (“Wowed”: 2nd rounder for Martinek, 3rd or better for Konopka).

  75. avatar Will C. says:

Kbelanger33: I had strongly considered boxing up my old McCabe Vancouver jersey last night. Part of my youth just got spit on. Damn Rangers.

  76. avatar isles316 says:

Brad Richards is probably the most under appreciated player in the league. The guy has done everything and is probably as valuable as anyone in the NHL outside of Crosby and Ovechkin. Dallas won’t get back what he is worth. It’s too bad they can’t resign him.

  77. why does anyone think that we could possibly get anything worth while for comeau? Please the guy plays with no heart. Has no value for any team..hey Chris, any way the isles can get a bag of pucks for bruno?

  78. avatar 4195mary says:

If I was Garth, I would feel no pressure at all to deal at all. Just imagine what this team could do if healthy.

  79. avatar MarioGazz says:

CB, do you think its possible to not make any major moves and just add some FA’s this summer and we would be good enough to taste the playoffs next year. On a side note, Tigers game today was throwback day and Hunter and DP dropped the puck and DP got booed and Hunter got a standing O.

  80. avatar rob says:

4195mary says Just imagine what this team could do if healthy.

OFLMFAO…what? win 5 more games and still miss playoffs??…this team is too young has no goalie and lacks enough talent to compete. should i say more? o yes i can, the GM and OWNER are bungholes

  81. avatar isles71 says:

Sounds like no Ryan Smyth moves? Think they stand pat, unless able to get something for Martinek. Keep picks and look for 1 top four dman and a really good 2nd line winger who can score in free agency. Streit back, KO back…top line set, move Frans to 3rd line with Bailey & Comeu…UFA on the 2nd, so there are the top 3 lines…resign Konopka, Martin & Haley is 4th & goalies are Poulin & Koskiken(sorry DP)…cut Bruno and see where we are with the kids…Looks promising…No?!?!?

  82. avatar anthony says:

Across the NHL (with the exception of the fraud who dosent need mentioning) all is quiet on the rumor front. If anyone out there (Posters here) know of a SEMI-RELIABLE and LEGIT rumor site please post it. I just always check the ones CB mentioned in the blog. On to Isles trade deadline.

    1. As CB said, besides a top 3 pick, which is GOLDEN, we have no assets to trade.
    2. Unless re-upping PAP was a plan to increase his value to get more back in a deal by tom.
    3. DO NOT TRADE JB, KO, Nino, and the No Brainers who i feel i dont need to mention being we are all NYI fans.
    4. TIME TO TAKE A STEP AHEAD: Either by the deadline or on draft day trade our top 3 pick for an ALL STAR FORWARD, we NEED to SPEND to REACH THE FLOOR, MAJOR $ COMING OFF THE BOOKS and the only way we are getting that star is through a trade.

P.S. What GM from any of the 4 major sports teams bashes his own Facilities??? and then on top of it says “WE CANT GET FA’S?

    A: Garth

    Great way to recruit Junior!

  83. avatar 91nyfan91 says:

the isles need to beef up there defensive core, too small IMO. If they get a couple of defensive man in a trade(highly doubt) or free agency they will make the playoffs next year. why do the islanders always get hurt btw. 5 out of their starting 6 are all out. fire the medical staff perhaps?

  84. avatar Isles6 says:

This marathon session on trades and trade rumors are just another reason why this blog is always a must read.

  85. avatar KO21 says:

Can one of you explain to me why Bruno’s value for “depth” is better than getting an 8th round pick back for him?? He is lost in the defensive zone, and has been for two years now. He was a promising prospect who lost his game, move on.

I can only imagine how he feels leaving the locker room after every game knowing he was outplayed by the opposition. If his confidence isn’t shattered, it probably should be.

  86. avatar 93Miracle says:

I dont know why people want to talk about trading Comeau. This guy is a solid 3rd line player for us that is young and has not even reached is point potential yet. I like this kid. With that said, take anything for Martinek-3rd round pick is fine. Bring back Konopka. Trade Shremp for a pick, and call it a day. Oh yea maybe see what people Want for Pa. If they give up a 1st rounder, I do it, but I doubt that happens. We have a good team here. Our defense will and must improve or the other way around. Tavares is going to get better, he is 19. Okposo will definitely get better, even if hes a very good 2nd liner..so what. Same goes with Grabner but we do not know his potential yet. Bailey is going to be a solid player as well hes so young and was rushed. Lets not go crazy and get a big name player just for the sake of doing it, not that the islanders would do something like that anyway.

  87. avatar Kyle says:

We need a big gritty hard hitting d-man who opponents will be afraid of( Scott Stevens, Chris Pronger type). Another key is the fourth line. I like the tandem of Konopka, Martin, Gillies. They dont take crap from anybody and will be able to protect our young stars from goons like matt cooke. Protection leads to less injuries, better development and a better successful team.

  88. avatar The Simtuation says:

@82…they dont have a 8th round, thats why and if they did it would still be an overpayment

  89. avatar Erika says:

Trade deadline is always intriguing, but there is not much I would do right now. I would wait till the summer and make a splash by signing someone that can truly make a difference. The one thing this team has is that they all seem to like each other. Don’t mess with it! And yes, I do not want to see McCabe in a rag jersey! Sacrilegious!

  90. avatar kingpin says:

If another team wants Bailly you have to move him. THe “core” fowards are EXTREMELY soft. Tavares,Grabbner,Okiposo,Moulson, Bailly, Comeu, these guys would get eaten alive by pens or philly in playoffs next year. Sure the 4th line is all gooned up, but you cant have your top 6 offensive players being people who would prefer to go entire careers without dropping gloves. Some nastiness is needed on top two lines, not just the 4th line.

  91. avatar 16 expiring says:

Hopefully, if Snow is smart, this trade deadline will be much to do about nothing. I do not think he is in a good position to make a trade other than to dump salary, which at this point is ridiculous.

Snowang need to focus their efforts on actually having a good summer and let this deadline pass.

And with that being said, Garth Snow and the Isles’ management need to finally break away from the slew of these one-year contracts with players.

They are the only team that started the season with 18 expiring contracts (they still had 16 up until recently). Look at capgeek online, and you’ll see red flags, as it looks like the Islanders are having a clearance sale in comparison to the other 29 teams. That has to change, or there won’t be a team, soon.
If Snowang wants to sign Zenon Konopka, and the figure is somewhere between 600 and 775K, then have some guts and commit to at least two years, or don’t sign him at all. If he’s not worth two years, he’s not at all worth it.

On another topic, although I would not want to lose Rob Schremp, or any regular on this team under 28 for nothing, I understand why Snow put Schremp on waivers. What I don’t get is why they played him for 14 minutes last night, knowing that he could be claimed by another team instead of heading to Bridgeport (unless there were gentlemen’s agreements). Maybe Capuano thought he’d deal with his enigma enigmatically(?)

I still hope Rob is in an Islander uniform, when he gets his head together.

Look at Dan Cleary. Couldn’t get it together with Tampa, but as an older guy, put it together with Detroit.

  92. avatar Steve says:

Good to see no significant moves are planned. I think July 1 is when Garth should get down to business once and for all.

  93. avatar matt from Holtsville says:

No pick outside top 5, but your optimistic about next year? Nice contradiction.

  94. avatar mark p says:

I would like to see the Islanders package Martinek and the Montreal #2 for a late #1 from a playoff bound team…..Snow will likely use his extra 2′s to move up draft day anyway.
I can’t imagine Isles landing Bognosian on deadline day…..if they were in on it…probably before the draft.
I think Bailey+DeHaan would be the price.

  95. avatar bossjones15 says:

Agree with kingpin, our most talented forwards are soft. I think Landeskog could be an instant help should we find ourselves with a top 3 (still think Larsson>Landeskog in the top 3, outside top 3 maybe Seimens?). Bailey ain’t going anywhere though, Snow traded back to get him and as we know Snow is stubborn. I’d trade Martinek for whatever even if its a 5th round pick, he is a good defenseman when he’s healthy which is almost never and he is no spring chicken anymore either.

  96. avatar Mars Bonfire says:

I see Marty going to Chicago, Hendry got hurt tonight. Hopefully Z is resigned. Sign Montoya as a back up Poulin . By ByDP

  97. avatar admin says:

@87: Saying there’s no guarantee it will be outside top 5. I believe it will be, but I thought the Isles would do much better this year. Was very wrong. -KS

  98. avatar Dreu Theran says:

FWIW – McKenzie is pre-rumoring Konopka to Canucks on Twitter.

  99. avatar Mike says:

Moves or no moves this off season we’ll likely be better by default getting Streit back in the lineup as well as Neiderreiter and another top five 1st round pick.

  100. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Comeau definetly NOT part of the core. Way too soft and as #85 mentioned real core players like Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Moulson, Nielsen and Grabner already are too soft. That is 6 of your 12 forwards. Comeau will be pushed out by guys like Nino, Martin, Petrov, Kabanov, Nelso, Cikas, Lee etc.

I think if the goalies stay healthy no issue. However, this defense is going to be well below average without major alterations just as it has been for recent memory. Also, every year for I do not know how many Isles have suffered serious injuries on defense even with different personel. Something is wierd. You simply cannot count on these guys to stay healthy. Snow needs to understand that only Streit, Hamonic, De Haan, Mac D, and Wishart are worth building around. If the defense is improved then playoffs are within reach next year, if it isn’t…..

Going forward on offense or defense whoever Snow adds better have “bite” to their game.

  101. avatar JD says:

I think Z is worth more to the Isles than he would be in a trade. Does anyone really think we would get anything more than a mid round pick for Z. Keep him Garth. He wants to be here. Not many players do.

  102. avatar Kyle says:

    DONT TRADE KONOPKA!

  103. avatar THE PORK CHOP EXPRESS says:

I agree this should be a very quite trade deadline for the isles. The isles are not in the market for a rental and they do not have any assets to acquire young prospects or high draft picks. Other than Martinek and Z the team really doesnt have much to trade. I wouldnt trade Z. It seems he has a good locker room presence. I wouldnt trade Radek unless we were getting 2nd round pick back. Anything less would not be worth losing him for the rest of the year.

We don’t even have enough depth in one area to make trades to help the weaker areas. (i.e Pitt/Stars or St Louis/Col trades).

The only way the isles will make any big moves is if something really creative happens and this is only my thoughts. For example, would the Isles help another team by taking a player that has big cap hit so that team can acquire its own impact player? In return the isles get the cap hit player plus a good draft pick or prospect? I really don’t think this will happen since it seems like the Isles do not want to add salary for a player that will not be in the team’s future but who knows. Anything can happen!!

Fore sure the isles will probably be more active at the draft!!!

  104. avatar Staten Islander says:

    KEEP KONOPKA…and FREE CHRIS BOTTA!

  105. avatar Will C. says:

    DONT TRADE KONOPKA!

  106. avatar Kbelanger33 says:

    YESSSSS Kingpin#85-Thank You!

  107. avatar Madchef says:

have two feelings on konopka. If he can get a player return like a hodgson(highly unlikely)then see you later, if not sign him and keep him, he is all blood sweat and tears for these kids.

  108. avatar Czerkawski says:

    Simple, Don’t Trade Zenon.

  109. avatar moonshine says:

i’d wait until off-season for the trades.
nyi have to evaluate the kids on the team very carefully, and there’s been so much roster turmoil this year that i’d keep everything as is and focus on individual performance over the last twenty games. changes now would be a distraction in a season that’s had way too many already.

  110. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

What would the Isles get for Konopka, a 3rd-round pick? Can’t see the Canucks giving up a prospect for a 4th-line player. I’m tired of mid-round picks.

  111. avatar mattyboy says:

You know Chris and friends, a name that never comes up because we love him is Nino. But that love, that marketability is the same thing that will make it easier for a manager to sell parting with a highly paid guy to his fanbase. I always hear people talk about moving Bailey, Comeau, even Dehaan. But if Garth ever wanted to make a Smyth like splash move, Nino has the NHL ready body and name that was chanted by Canadians 2 WJC’s ago. He could keep us from having to relinquish 16 more assets in the type of move Brian Compton wants. CB says Parisi will not be here and he’s probably right. But if Lou was faced with a Nino + a high 1st plus a ueseful roster player + a whole lot of cap relief he’d at least not be able to instantaneously hang up the phone. Just sayin’….

  112. avatar streit02 says:

Ridiculous if the Isles trade Z. We needed toughness last offseason. We address the situation. So now we’re going to undo something that we corrected? Makes no sense to me. For a lousy draft pick that wont see the NHL for atleast another 4 years. Thats if he ever sees the NHL at all.

  113. avatar streit02 says:

continued from 98. And you reward PA Paranteau with a new deal and place him on our top line to play with our franchise player. PA never earned anything on this team. He was handed everything from day 1 for no reason. If you reward someone like that and trade someone like “Z” then Snow has some serious issues. I really hope hes not penciling in Czikas for the 4th line next year already.

  114. avatar Steven says:

I hope the Isles keep Z. You have to wonder if Tampa let Z go and the Isles end up trading Z is there something were not hearing about Z?

  115. avatar islesrock73 says:

I could not blame Snow if he gets a 2nd round pick or an NHL ready prospect for Z. Anything short of that would be a dumb move. Not a Bailey fan, but he is not going anywhere for now.

  116. avatar Patrick says:

Chris Phillips re-signs in OTT, three years for $9.25M, as per @DarrenDreger. Includes no move clause.

  117. avatar DRIVE45 says:

Please Garth, do not trade your 1st round pick and resign Konopka. Great face-off and locker room guy. Makes no sense trading him. Adding a Larsson, Landeskog, Nugent-Hopkins or Couturier at the draft will be just what the doctor ordered. No Milbury deals please!

  118. avatar Anthony says:

I really hope they keep Z around

  119. avatar admin says:

Main post updated with stuff on Konopka and Chris Phillips…CB

  120. avatar 91nyfan91 says:

that would be so stupid to trade konokpa. he brings so much to this team and hes cheap. very good at face offs and practically fights every game. why trade him to get a 3rd round pick at best.

  121. avatar Bob E says:

I dont see much happening. We wont ruin the core. Zk. Must stay. Great guy and wants to stay with isles.

  122. avatar Jtorbust says:

    Konops for captain

  123. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

Bard Boyes to Buffalo for a second round pick. Nice pick up for Buffalo.

  124. avatar "WeWantTen" says:

I’m thinking they’re gonna have to roll with four lines next year … mixing Martin and Haley in two of the top three lines ..

  125. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

According to ESPN’S Pierre Lebrun, the Isles had talks on something and it died. He never said what it was.

  126. avatar Kevin says:

How the hell did Garth not get in on Boyes… he’d be an absolute perfect fit for our top lien with JT and MM and for a 2nd round pick I’d do it in a heartbeat, Boyes is only 28 and as Crompton keeps saying, that pick will be 22 when the lease expires..

  127. avatar Bryan says:

I agree, it seems silly that the Islanders wouldn’t offer a 2nd round pick for Brad Boyes. They sure could use his touch on the powerplay and our 2nd round pick is sure to be better than Buffalos.

  128. avatar Bryan says:

just to finish that though Boyes is signed next year so its not like we would be trading a 2nd rd pick for a rental on a last place team.

  129. avatar KaiserVanIslander says:

Wish we could have got Brad Boyes rather see him next to JT and MM. But we got PU

  130. avatar C.J. says:

I predict we move Martinek for a 3rd (anything more is gravy — I love these 2nd rounder rumors).

Also, I stated this several weeks back… I believe we move Zenon Konopka and get a return far better than many might think (quite possibly a late 2nd).

The last part of my prediction will need to wait until July 1st when we resign Zenon.

  131. avatar James says:

I had heard that Mason Raymond MAY be available

what would you guys think if Snow somehow got Raymond for Z?

  132. avatar James says:

gordy lane (post #57) hit the nail on the head about people overreacting because we didn’t jump on Boyes for a 2nd round pick

Boyes has been very inconsistent his whole career. Why do you think Boston gave up on him? Boyes would not have helped us much at all, so I am glad Snow didn’t go after him.

Snow is damned if he does something and damned if he doesn’t. He is in a no-win situation with many Islander fans. Let’s just see what happens tomorrow and not overreact like Peter Stasny did last week.

  133. avatar Anth says:

I don’t care what anyone says …. I feel that Z has been the heart and the soul of this Islanders team and he needs to stay! He sticks up for the players talks to the media and is great on the draw and fighting!

  134. avatar Confused Islander Fans says:

Boyes makes 4 million next year. Pretty expensive if you ask me.

  135. avatar anthony says:

I pray Bob McKenzie is right, TRADE KONOPKA in a flash. Anyone who says they would LOVE to play for Montreal WHILE under contract and in season with my team IS NOT a fit here IMO.

  136. avatar sean says:

Keep zenon, we need a guy like him on the team.

  137. avatar bcarroll25 says:

cb, i know he will not have value until he proves he can play, but where/how do you see trent hunter on this team next year?

  138. avatar Joe from Bayside says:

As per Mike Brophy of SportsNet, claims an Isles source told him Martinek is in play..any truth to this?

  139. avatar Bob E says:

This isles Roster next year will be very similar to what it is currently. Perhaps the addition of Nino Niedereiter and Calvin De Made of Glass. Hunter might be done.
Hats off to Snow, realizing Lawson and Schremp have no fit here. Put both on waivers.

  140. avatar admin says:

    (138) Are you kidding, Joe? Have we not written that a half-dozen times over the last two weeks? Hasn’t Newsday? CB

  141. avatar admin says:

Brad Boyes makes $4 million this year AND next year. I don’t know how any Islanders fan could think that’s a deal this ownership and management would make…CB

  142. avatar Dan says:

Big day today. Lets see what we can get for marty.

Also I want to keep Konopka but if a 2nd is offered Garth has to take it. We can always resign him in the offseason.

  143. avatar MarioGazz says:

Trade Marty and keep Z. You dont want to take a chance an not be able to re-sign him.

  144. avatar admin says:

If the Islanders traded Konopka today, you can say goodbye to him. He would be gone for good…CB

  145. avatar Jake says:

Can’t trade Konopka, it sends the wrong message

  146. avatar Steven says:

How can Boyes be making 4 million? Is he really that good a player? These salaries are insane.

  147. avatar Andre says:

CB, on a follow up on your note on Boyes are you saying that Boyes is not worth the $4 million for next year (which is why the Islanders would not be interested in him) or that Islanders managment won’t spend that kind of money period. If it is the latter, how is the franchise supposed to improve when the team has a glaring need for a proven scorer and a top 3 defenseman.

  148. avatar WEHM Anthony says:

I’d hate to see martinek go, but I think he should if Garth can get a good return, but I really think Konopka should have the un-trade-able tag placed on him… I think he’s a big part of this locker room, speaks up and sticks up for Tavares and others… He needs to be kept! What would they get for him anyway… a 3rd or 4th round pick… its not worth it to me… CB your closer to the situation, your thoughts?

  149. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

If Garth does trade Z and gets a pick, trades Martinek and gets a pick, what does that say to the fans? Picks take YEARS. How about some PLAYERS? How about a bold move, to get the fans excited? Are we to wait AGAIN for draft day for Garth to trade the 32,46,68,104 for the 17,71 and 88? How exciting…..jeez

  150. avatar jbranny says:

Strummer #14, Your request for a couple of skilled, large, tough all zone D-men is what the whole league is looking for. They have some of the big (but not tough) elements in guys like Jurcina and Wishart. They have the skilled portion in guys like Martinek, Streit and Hillen. But finding all these elements in one defenseman is incredibly difficult…and expensive. I like your post, but you make it sound like you can go to the supermarket and get these guys…at a reasonable price. If that were the case, they would be on the roster already.

  151. avatar Staten Islander says:

I hate to say it, but I think Z is gone

  152. avatar admin says:

If the Islanders move Konopka today, it will confirm that they didn’t believe the Friday war against the Penguins was any big deal, along with my suspicions that management are not big fans of Konopka…CB

  153. avatar Chris Retzlaff says:

Rob, (1st comment) how can you say Snow will do nothing, as usual ? O’marra and Nilsson for Ryan Smyth was a steal eventhough we could not keep him. His trades do not set us back light years like mad Mike did/had to do……C’mon man.

  154. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

If the Isles management doesn’t think highly of Z then I would be very disappointed. This guy has done nothing but lead by example for the younger players and he needs to be around for at least a couple more years. If he does get traded forget about re-signing him at the start of free agency (like we all hoped for Andy Sutton last year).

  155. avatar BanGarth says:

They need a Jim Vandermeer throwback take no crap old school defenseman and a top line forward and we are in playoffs next year. Keep Z trade Marty and Garth.

  156. avatar alex says:

Just brutal. How you don’t see the x factor with Z is hilarious. He is the kind of guy you need on a young team for guidance. Finally we have someone throw some fire in our bellies. Someone that sticks up for a team instead of remaining silent and he gets traded? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

  157. avatar Chris Retzlaff says:

At some point, Isles MGMT should listen to the fans, keep Z ! who does what he does ? Who will replace him ? He has grit and Face off Skill, no need for another enforcer to play with Gillies.
More importantly, team chemistry should not be messed with…this group has gained legit traction headed into next year.

  158. avatar Jim says:

I would hate to see Konopka leave he seems to be a good leader.

I can’t beleive anyone would give anything of value for Martinek. He would not be a big loss due to his constant injuries. He may be a decent defensemen but he really can only be considered a part time player.

  159. avatar islesrock73 says:

CB, can you shed anymore light on why management may be down on Konopka? On the ice, he looks like a keeper. We fans should understand that a lot of “stuff” occurs off the ice, and in the locker room, that may rub management the wrong way. Any thoughts?

  160. avatar admin says:

    Post updated with Konopka news…CB

  161. avatar James says:

If Z indeed get traded, I strongly believe that all of the excitement / strong ticket sales of the April 8th home game finale against the Penguins is gone with him. While I am not discounting the passion of the rest of the team, the fire that he brought was unmatched.

  162. avatar Glens says:

If Z gets traded if just confirms that Wang is anti fight. The guy is great in the lockeroom from what I’ve read and is respected by all of his teammates. Not to mention he’s in the top five in face off pct.

  163. avatar Chris Retzlaff says:

Garth Snow has done nothing wrong, he has kept his word, who needs a “kessel-like” trade at this point ? Wake up everyone, stop with the Snow blowin’

  164. avatar Chris Retzlaff says:

CB….how do we move on from the DP ERA ?
is his contract insured ? If he retires, are the isles on the hook for all of the $ ? What can be done ? It has been long enough, time to move on.

  165. avatar thepolishprince says:

I’m glad Zenon isn’t high on the “nucks wish list. I want him to stay on the Isle and hope Garth gets no offers for him worth considering.

  166. avatar derek says:

It’s funny to read some of the outsiders like LeBrun say that this or that guy from the Isles are gonna be moved, then you get a report like CB that Z’s not even in the middle of their wishlist. Kind of funny that the EXPERTS seem to know everything.

Isles news, if it’s not CB or Katie, and Dreg and McKenzie to a lesser extent, no need listening.

  167. avatar EricCup says:

I’ve said this before – Konopka is the de-facto captain of this team. He is a face-off specialist and a team leader the young guys look up to. He is a team spokesman to the media and very vocal with his teammates. Not to mention the obvious – that he’s always willing to drop ‘em. Trading him now would be a mistake – my opinion.

  168. avatar streit02 says:

Well thats good to hear that Van is not interested. CB, i hope you are wrong regarding management not thinking highly of Z. What is your personal opinion of Konopka??

  169. avatar Chris Retzlaff says:

I have a feeling, that a Big Move is comming, it has been too quiet. Perhaps the 1st pick gets traded today, and we are all left scratching our heads….LOL

  170. avatar Kaszycki's Krew says:

I love what Zenon brings to the team…but …..you can’t have a guy whose top production in NHL is 4 goals and 3 Assists (with ANA) as your captain. I love that he is a strong voice in locker room…..and love that he defends our guys on the ice…..

But before we make him captain and give him a 3 year contract – are you sure you want to do that? I had to catch myself too….I was trying to think of a Captain in recent times from the third line or so – and wanted to say he reminds me of Dirk Graham —- but Graham had been a 30 goal scorer……ZK is not that. Renew him 1 year at same fee and be done with it. I would not deal him for anything less than a 3rd rounder – unless I was sure that we had someone (Haley?) take his role fulltime. Trading him for a fourth rounder ? Better off keeping him around for this year. Has to be a reason why he is on his 4th NHL team (ANA/CLB/TB/NYI) However – I do like him and think he is a good soldier.

  171. avatar JT says:

Read that Konopka is #5 in the league in faceoff pct. Given that and his toughness, s NYI houldn’t give up on him unless they receive an excellent offer. IMHO a 3rd rounder is not enough.

  172. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

    Keep Kenopka! Easy decision.

  173. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

while he’s good on faceoffs and apparently a good guy in the room, just winning a faceoff isn’t a great asset if you’re not able to contribute anything else on the ice. I’d question how many of Z’s 20 some fights this season have actually done anything positive for the team, rather than wake up their opponent.

I like the guy, but he’s a fourth line center with no upside. Mountains out of molehills in my opinion. If he goes, he goes.

What I do want to see for the rest of the season is Matt Martin playing with Bailey and Comeau. I think he’s better suited to play there than anyone else they have on the bottom half of the roster and Schremp adds absolutely nothing to the lineup. Martin would create more space for Bailey and Comeau, as well as a big body in front of the net or in the corners retrieving the puck. He’s not a 4th liner, he’s a young kid who plays a physical game and who hasn’t been given consistant time on a line that could use him.

  174. avatar orngfan says:

getting a #2 pick back for martinek? i’d do that deal in a HEARTBEAT! even a 3rd round pick and they got a deal!

  175. avatar Derek A says:

As a fan I like Z, I don’t know whats the deal internally within the organizations feeling for him.

Trading Radek would be a good move here if Snow could get 2 for him like you said CB.

I haven’t been keeping track but dont we have alot of picks in this upcoming draft? I would hope that turns into a little trade bait this summer…

NA NA NA NANA LIFE IS LIFE!

  176. avatar JD says:

Its good to hear that Vancouver isn’t that interested in Z but its pretty obvious that retaining him is not a priority. Really makes you wonder the way management views Z compared to the way fans and his teammates view him.

  177. avatar claude says:

I never understood why they waived Jackman? Guy has 20 pts and can beat you senseless. How points does Montreal lovin’ Zenon have?

  179. avatar Ray says:

the only way I would trade z is for a 1st or Sbisa……other than that Nothing else is realistic or intrigues me……Z more Valuable thatn a 3rd or late draft pick IMO

  180. avatar streit02 says:

This Konopka stuff is pissing me off. Who centers are 4th line when hes gone? Who drops the gloves? Who takes our faceoffs? Who is going to stand up for our young players or even our organization as a whole? His value is completely undervalued. You dont have to score 30 goals to have value to a team. I guess its pretty obvious mgmt doesnt want him. If they signed Juice and PA early they wouldve signed Z by now. Always 2 steps forward, 1 step back with franchise. Wasnt Snow quoted as saying he was going to add a defensemen by today also?

Konopka to Ducks for a 2nd rounder is a good deal. Also glad he won’t be in the conference.

  189. avatar James says:

I wonder, if the Isles can swing Z for a 2nd, that would give the Isles 3 2nd round picks and maybe they can use those 2nd round picks for some leverage for a bigger deal

  190. avatar Big says:

If there’s a deal on the table that makes sense for a few important young pieces (d) for this years first rounder we should jump on it. Sign a capable fwd in fa. How many year are we going to wait for a rebuild? Seems like it’s been 4 years and there has been a month of good progress in total. It’s time to speed up the process.

  197. avatar Tim F. says:

  199. avatar MarioGazz says:

    From Barry Melrose:
If the Isles can get a high draft pick, they should trade him. But if they are only going to get a seventh or eighth pick, I don’t think it is worth it. The fans love him, he is a leader in the dressing room and when you are a young team, you never have enough leaders. DO NOT TRADE HIM!!!!!!!!!!

  200. avatar JD says:

maybe Wang is mad at Z for the 100K fine.

  201. avatar quez says:

Love Zenon. Only way he gets moved is if he is packaged with a pick/prospect for an NHL ready prospect like a Cody Hodgson or Kyle Beach type. Highly unlikely. Z means a lot to this team, but CB may be spot on with his take on NYI management not being a big fan.

  203. avatar Ray says:

@ 194 it is rare but Z reminds me of the type of guy that would do that…..I hope…Botta said Z probably would not come back if traded…

  204. avatar streit02 says:

does management really like anyone? They have a problem with everyone. All they need to do is look in the mirror to find the real problem. Management is the real reason people dont want to play here. Not a crappy building or even winning for that matter. People dont come here because our management is viewed as a joke and there is zero stability.

  205. avatar tond24 says:

  206. avatar Vealchop says:

CB, would you do a sign and trade with St.Louis for David Backes?

  208. avatar 16 expiring says:

173, what’s the point in trading Z, if the Isles can’t get a good return, though? The Isles clearly need to get away from trading away NHL players for mid round draft picks. They need to add salary – not the other way around.

  214. avatar IsleFanInTN says:

The first time in years this team has some toughness and now the Isles are looking to trade the reason why. Without Z’s influence, the Pittsburg game plays out completely different and we get pummeled. Instead, we beat the snot out of them, dominate the game, fights and scoreboard, Mario cries, the fans are the most excited they have been in 10 years…and we are going to trade the reason why all of that happened for a crappy pick. Makes perfect sense to us Islander fans.

  215. avatar pablo says:

” If the Islanders move Zenon Konopka today, it will confirm that they didn’t believe the Friday war against the Penguins was any big deal, along with my suspicions that management is not a big fan of Konopka”.

The Management is not a big Fan of Konopka ???
Well Since Management is Charles Wang and Garth Snow and these two brought him in, What is there not to be a Fan of? Z makes 600k a year is that alot? Z is the best face off man they have and he has more Heart in his little Pinky than Charles Wang and Garth Snow put together!
What this Organization needs, from the Hockey Heavens is to GET RID OF SNOW AND WANG! They are the Anchor who is holding this ship down!
The Biggest JOKE of them ALL is the Quote that gets said often ” Charles Wang has a open Wallett for Snow to Sign any player he Wants”

CB – Why would management like Konopka? Hes a vocal guy and Wang and his “Republic” do not tolerate that. You of all people should know that. Pathetic. Someone needs to start telling it like it is in Wangs regime.
They are getting rid of a vocal leader. Wang is very much a part of this – he comes off as a nice benevolent man – when he is very much the polar opposite. Isles not winning anything with this disgrace to Islander Country owning the team.

  220. avatar JTizzle says:

    Rob Schremp = Fart Sound!

  221. avatar Sean says:

  222. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

If Snow somehow gets a 2nd round pick for Konopka, great job! I love his leadership, faceoff percentage, and toughness, but if this team is prepared to take the next step, it also needs a fourth line that can contribute offensively as well. They have not got that from Konopka. In all fairness, he has not played with much either.

  223. avatar streit02 says:

could care less about Schremp right now. Hope he figures it out in Atl. What was really baffling is how everytime Schremp came back from being scratched he was put at center and was given PP time over Bailey. Maybe we can stop F’in around with Bailey now and hope he finds his niche

  224. avatar chos500 says:

    I agree (196) Z ain’t going to the Ducks

  225. avatar admin says:

    Post updated with Schremp news…CB

  226. avatar 16 expiring says:

Well, Schremp was claimed by the Thrashers (Don Waddell) per TSN. I think this is a shortcoming of Garth’s. Schremp by himself would not have brought back anything, but you can’t let assets get away for nothing. Here’s why:
Schremp may not get a return, but a package of Bergenheim, F. Meyer, and Schremp clearly does. If you don’t plan on keeping them around for good, at least keep them around until you can get assets back for them. A rebuilding team must do this, and too often Snow lets guys get away for nothing.

  227. avatar SCLI says:

Trading Konapka? Makes no sense. We hold on to unproductive players like Bruno, Tamby and Hunter for years but we are moving a guy who the players like, the Fans Love, who is 5th in winning % on FO’s and is a team leader. He kills Penalties, fights anyone and sticks up for his teammates. He’s added a swagger to this team that we’ve not seen in years. And he loves playing for the Islanders which is saying something. I’m scratching my my head. What will we get in return a 4th or 3rd pick at best? Not close to matching what Zenon does for this team. If Snow makes this trade for a low draft pick? My opinion of Snow will reach an all time low. Believe me when I say, Thats pretty LOW.

  228. avatar dan says:

Good bye schremp. you were great in the shoot out but were poop everywhere else.

  229. avatar Jimbo says:

    Snow-for darn sakes-do Not trade Konopka !

  230. avatar admin says:

16 expiring: Bergenheim is a different case, but a package of 2 waiver guys still gets you nothing in return. Teams don’t want 3 players from one team’s scrap heap in a trade. Don’t want to pay them, don’t have room on roster…CB

  231. avatar Stumpy32 says:

It’s a real shame w/ Schremp. The guy showed signs, here and there, of being a solid depth guy and potential 20-goal scorer. The problem is that he’s the hockey equivalent of an undersized small forward…not skilled enough for the 3rd line, not tough enough for the 4th line.

Hope he finds what’s missing in Atlanta. Seemed to be a real decent guy.

  232. avatar Strummer's Army says:

    #203 they love Bruno Geravis!

If Z is traded then who plays the 4th center spot? There is not Bridgeport player outside of Ullstrom but he’s no fighter. Who helps the Isles in the rematch vs. Pit? Pit has added yet another cheap shot artist and fighter since the last game. There are no other fighters to call up and Isles were already short handed in that department vs. Pit. Pit has said they are getting revenge on the Isles in the final game.

Almost no traded player ever returns to the team that traded him. Tckhuck might be the only guy.

I’d be thrilled to land 2 additional 2nd round picks. That would be amazing because with 4th 2nd rounders almost anything is possible in the draft or large trades BUT I’d like to see an actual player/prospect returning.

I’d really like the Isles to bring in toughness today if they are trading Konopka and even if not.

I just got word that Schremp was claimed by Atlanta so HE’S GONE! GOOD DAY SO FAR! We don’t have to worry about him going to Bridgeport and Garth bringing him back up.

  233. avatar Alan says:

I love Konopka’s fire, but if you can get a 2 for him and a 2 for Martinek. Do it. Hopefully if that is successful, four 2nd rounders would allow us to grab quality veterans in the offseason.

  234. avatar The new isles gm says:

The real shame is Schremp changed his number to 44 this year hoping to find some good luck with a number he loves to wear. Only time would tell that he would be claimed off waivers after only playing 44 games for the NYI this year.

  235. avatar James from Swindles says:

@Strummer (#229): the 4th line center would likely be Colliton or Haley, both of whom are natural centers playing on the wings these days.

  236. avatar lefty says:

if garth can get a 2nd round pick for a Zenon Konopka, he should do it in a heartbeat. what’s harder to come by in the NHL? a 4th line center or a 2nd round pick? he wins most faceoffs and fights every third shift, but c’mon. c’mon.

  237. avatar James says:

The reason Jackman is more effective in Calgary, is because Calgary had surrounded him with better players on his line

Had we kept Jackman and had him play with Martin and Haley, I bet he would be just as effective here.

  238. avatar the bomber says:

thank you. rob schremp is a heck of a nice guy but he should be in the pro beach roller hockey league…..he is not an nhl player. getting rid of these guys is the first sign we are getting ready to compete in the NHL. next stop BRUNO…..

  239. avatar Larry F. says:

I know that Konopka is never going to light the scoresheet on fire, but I too, would hate to see him go. In an NHL full of mind-numbing, cookie-cutter interviews, Konopka is one of the few who is willing to say what the fans want to hear. Is that also why management is leaning towards parting with him? I understand that on most teams, Konopka’s skill set is not enough, but unless the Islanders plan on acquiring another leader/enforcer, this team loses it’s only voice and it’s backbone. And this young group desperately needs both of those.
Ay some point, I wish PB would shed some light on Konopka’s relationship with Isles coaches and management. What’s the real deal?

  240. avatar Mike says:

CB, do you think the fact that ZK wants to stay on LI stems simply from the fact he’s confident the Isles are a team that have a place on the roster for him? I think he’s just tired of being a healthy scratch/call-up type and wants a 1-way contract again. Don’t think it’ll break his heart to leave via trade. That being said, I think Haley is a more capable 4th line center because of his incremental scoring touch over ZK while posessing seemingly the same toughness/fire. That, and ZK and Schremp leaving frees up a spot for Hunter who will probably stay

  241. avatar Mike says:

I better not see Gervais in an Isles uniform after this season. Hunter needs to go – hes too slow – unless hes a 4th line guy?

Would Jack Hillen make a decent 3rd line forward? He seems to really put himself in vulnerable spots and gets creamed at least twice a game.

  242. avatar EricCup says:

I wish Rob Schremp good luck in Atlanta. He’s a good guy who was great with the kids. It just didn’t seem to work for him here. He was damn good at the shootout though.

  243. avatar "WeWantTen" says:

Garth said we were going to love Zenon before the season started and he was a great locker room guy. If he’s traded, I wonder what Garth’s answer will be since he was loved by the fans and is a great locker room guy. It doesn’t make sense.

  244. avatar Bob E says:

Usually when player is traded they never return. You think ZK and isles mgt devise a plan to send him for playoff hunt, get a 2nd pick and resign him next year again?

  245. avatar geduffer says:

Strange to say about a 4th liner, but trading Konopka would be devastating. It would push me to the sidelines (or more accurately the sofa to watch games on TV).

It would prove to me that Garth is a puppet who has no business having the keys to a franchise and that Wang’s meddling will keep the team from ever being good until he sells.

When a guy is positive and passionate about the future of the team, and WANTS to stay, you trade him? Only in Wang’s twisted world. We need a new owner and a GM with cojones or 4/8/11 could very well be my last game ever in the Coliseum.

  246. I really do NOT want to see Zenon leave. I really enjoy his pride for this team. I have not really been upset at Snow for a while and this would make me extermely upset, truly would

  247. avatar SCLI says:

Let Schremp go and Trade Konopka to get Hunter back in the lineup???? DUH! Yea, thats brilliant!

  248. avatar admin says:

  249. avatar Rich 55 says:

  250. avatar chad says:

konopka can go, especially if you can get a 3rd rounder. for zenon konopka? you do that yesterday.

the 2 things he’s supposed to be good at – faceoffs and fighting, he’s not even that good at. just average at best at both.

they have haley, martin and gillies for rough stuff. the top 6 fowards have to get tougher, not the 4th liners

that friday night penguin beatdown was because of haley. konopka didnt even do anything

  251. avatar JP says:

RealKyper # NHL trade #BlueJackets Klesla goes to #Coyotoes for Upshall and Lepisto.

  252. really don’t see the ducks having a need for z now with the trade for mcgratten..lord snow, please don’t trade z..extend him,,guy wants to be here, and for a good price..unreal..as for rm, trade him in a heartbeat, good guy, been here awhile, deserves a chance in the playoffs.

  253. avatar JD says:

Little off topic but really amazing that Phoenix which hasn’t had an owner for a season and a half now can make trades and keep a payroll higher than the Isles.

  254. avatar 16 expiring says:

229, well yeah, Bergenheim is a different case. Since there is such a fine line between a 2nd/3rd line player and a bust, and no one truly knows who will succeed and who will bust, why give away assets for nothing?!
The art of trading is all about timing and packaging. In order to have leverage, one must have the maximum assets at his disposal. Even if you want to argue that Bergenheim and Schremp would be a package for a team at a deadline, then so be it. You could also have packaged Martinek and Meyer together, at some point during this season, and gotten a real return, hypothetically.

I agree, btw, that huge packages aren’t pragmatic at the time of the deadline, necessarily, but I am trying to talk of the big picture, especially since this is supposed to be a rebuilding team, Chris.

Letting go of assets for nothing is how pro sport franchises of the past, such as the Cleveland Barons, California Seals, Kansas City A’s, LA Clippers, and others have operated. If that is Garth’s M.O., then what, as a fan, should I think?

P.S. If Zenon goes to Vancouver for a mid-round pick, this team really is done.

  255. avatar Andy says:

Why isn’t Konopka liked by management? He has been a proven leader at other levels and the players seem to love him..could this be a case of the ownership not wanting a leader on this team to help with a move?

  256. avatar Jack says:

History shows that any player that can fight or is tough gets shipped out by Wang. Erskine, Sutton, Asham, Witt, Fritz, Recklicz. ZK will probably go for some worthless draft pick and Gillies will be next. We all read the quotes on this site that Wang has had an anti fighting mandate for a long time. He was probably bullied as a child.

  257. avatar IslesFan73 says:

#253, You have failed to mention any players that are, or were “assets” with trade value. Packaging a couple of waiver type players will not yield a return, as CB has explained.

  258. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

I like Konopka, but why is everyone here so concerned about fighting? How many fighters do the Red Wings have or Chicago? Last time I checked they won a Cup without a big fighter.
A team needs four lines to be successful.
If a fourth liner can fight great, but first they need to be energy guys who can contribute a little offensively as well and kill penalties.

  259. avatar jeff says:

What good are 2′s to a team that turned the 5th overall pick into Josh Bailey?

  260. avatar Andy says:

Um Chicago had Eaves, Burish and a couple others..Detroit is Bettman’s team so its easy for them

  261. avatar Andy says:

    Sorry, Eager not Eaves

  262. avatar streit02 says:

257- Its not just about fighting with Konopka. Its about what he stands for and you can see the young guys look up to him and are more comfortable knowing someone has their back. Its not just about scrapping. Konokpa is a warrior and a workhorse and that rubs off on other players. Not to mention he is put out to take every crucial faceoff in every game.

  263. avatar Andy says:

Yeah..and Chicago isn’t as tough this year and where are they?

  264. avatar BanGarth says:

257 Why is everyoen concerned ? Because this is hockey and like it or not it is part of the game. Tavares’ career will be over by the time his rookie contract is over if this team doesn t have toughness. Do you know what is going to happen next time we play Penquins. Did you see what Toronto did to him ? We have young undersized kids who don t even shave yet , we need toughness. If they trade ZK for a 2nd rounder this team should jsut close the doors now and put us all out of our misery. I don t mind losing if this team stands up for each other and gives it their all, all you can ask for. If we are just getting bullied every night no one will ever sign here and many fans will stop watching.

  265. avatar Rich says:

CB, do you still feel that Garth got the max return for Wisniewski? Seems like he could have gotten more now based on how many teams need quality dmen and what is currently available…

  266. avatar Tavares'RemainingTeeth says:

Please don’t trade Konopka, and have Haley play more games.

  267. avatar JTizzle says:

  268. avatar @mygameworn says:

::yawn:: boring day today…. Snow might have made the right decision trading Rollie when he did. No market for goalies…

  269. avatar A Real hockey fan says:

.. Zenon brings a lil bit of character and *some* charisma to this lifeless organization! The NY Islanders mgmt seem to be content on being #11 on a scale of 1-10 on NY sportsteams, its pathetic!

.. The guy ‘brings it’ every game, wants to stay here on the Isles and makes only $600K! Geeeez that cant make sense so lets get more draft pixxx? cmon

.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep him for another year, hes well worth it and a valuable player on the roster! :-)

  270. avatar geduffer says:

Avs trade Kevin Montgomery to the Oilers for Shawn Belle. You can cut the excitement with a knife (yawn!) :-)

  271. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Regarding Konopka, I like the guy, but he’s absolutely not worth a 2nd-rounder, so if Garth can pull it off, absolutely. Plus, if he’s so keen on remaining and Islander, why exactly couldn’t he just re-sign with us in July for that $600k salary, potentially with more playoff experience this spring to boot?

  272. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

Im not saying not to have fighters, but his team needs more than that. Don’t get me wrong, I really like what Konopka brings, and maybe he needs more on his wings to play with, but a team needs more production on the scoreboard. Burish in Chicago would score goals, as would Asham for Philadelphia.

Toughness is one thing. One dimensional players are another. Yes he is great on the faceoffs, and like I said, maybe with someone other than Gilles on his wing he may have produced more.

I would like to see a tougher defeneman that can hit other stars. TAvares has been hit around and its time to hit back at the Crosby’s and other stars. Don’t waste your time with the no good Talbots and Cookes

  273. avatar JT says:

CB, think Isles are kicking the tires on Higgins?

  274. avatar Greg N says:

Has anyone said anything about Radek to Chicago being a possibility?I think he’d be a great fit. They need some D right now.And if they won with Sopel last year,Radek is a HUGE upgrade over Sopel, imo.

  275. avatar Word says:

Keep Konopka, trade the goal song…

  276. avatar Giaco says:

Keep Konopka unless somehow someone offers a 2nd or 3rd.

  280. Good luck to Shremp…
I’m happy to have his spot free for whomever next year- hopefully someone good.

I still prefer to keep Z. This trade deadline is not that exciting, but I see it’s still a big deal which is great for hockey I hope…

  281. avatar Andy says:

If Ducks can grab Winchester from St. Louis Konopka should be safe..lets hope

  282. avatar anthony says:

With 1 hour 2 go to the deadline:

    3 Words:

    “WORST DEADLINE EVER”

    NOT 1 BIG DEAL!

    no suspense at all

  283. avatar 2Bit says:

Is Casey Cizikas our future fourth line center? Meaning possibly next year?

  284. avatar Andy says:

    Anaheim gets Winchester….

  285. avatar Al from Virginia says:

I hate to say this but JT will be out with a concussion at some point. It’s only a matter of time. We absolutley need players that can protect JT and our young players. Remember Dave Semenko? Clark Gillies? Anybody ever mess with Bossy or Gretzky?
Wang, you don’t have to be a genius to figure that out. Do the right thing or you will lose the few fans this team has left. Time is ticking….

  286. avatar MarioGazz says:

Canes get Bryan Allen Panthers get Sergei Samsanov.

  287. avatar geduffer says:

Bryan Allen from Florida to Carolina for Sanmsonov

  288. avatar dedshark says:

Zk lookin like hes staying. Winny traded

  289. avatar Brian says:

Looks like Konopka’s not going to Anaheim – TSN reporting Brad Winchester from the Blues to the Ducks for a 3rd round pick.

  290. avatar admin says:

The Lupul thing was a hoax. As a prank, the blogger Down Goes Brown asked fans to tweet to Lupul’s account that he was traded to Long Island. Now Lupul is fooling around about it. NEXT! CB

cb…howd u find out all of that haha

  293. avatar Jake says:

pretty sad that going to the islanders is such a joke. wow do we need some good p.r.

  294. avatar anthony says:

As of 2:33PM if Sctty Upshall is the best player traded today, it’s a PROBLEM.

    THIS IS WEAK!

  295. avatar streit02 says:

Wow that was really funny? Too bad Toronto is a joke in itself

  296. avatar MarioGazz says:

Another reason why Z should stay, so he can kick Lupol’s A#S!!!!!

  297. avatar Andy says:

    Penner to Kings..wow

  298. avatar joe says:

    Penner to the Kings.
    TSN TradeCentre

  299. avatar joe says:

Looks like the Kings might have paid pretty high for Penner

  300. avatar James says:

That to me is a steep price for Penner

  301. avatar geduffer says:

I saw the DGB tweet. I’m glad Lupul is playing with it. You gotta have a sense of humor.

Penner brings back Colton Teubert, a 2011 first and a2012 conditional. Not bad.

  302. avatar JD says:

thats a steep price the Kings paid. The Oilers have been trying to dump Penner for years now. A 1st and a top D prospect is pretty good.

  303. avatar Derek says:

Islanders missed the boat with Penner. He would have been perfect to play with Tavares and Moulson. I would have parted with a 1st rounder for him.

  304. avatar JSExpress says:

With Lawson back at Bridgeport, who is backing up Montoya tomorrow? I saw that DP was back on the ice today, but there is no way he is game-ready. Is Nabokov reporting? What is the deal?

  305. avatar tsharaf says:

For years, we look for a productive 4th liner. Now that we find one, they are not “sold” on him? What gives, CB? The guy is a leader, fights, takes important faceoffs, kills penalties, etc. What more do they want?

  306. avatar Brian G says:

Martinek & Konopkauld probably be had for a 3rd round pick & minor prospect for each. I wonder if Snow would trade them together…maybe both to Chicago for something like Stalberg,Dowell and a pick

  307. avatar Adam says:

So let me get this straight – Snow wanted a 2nd for Konopka and Anaheim picked up Winchester for a 3rd. Well played Garth, well played

  308. avatar Brian G says:

Will Snow put Nabakov on Waivers today?

  309. avatar 16 expiring says:

253, Sean Bergenheim is most certainly an asset. Did you actually bother to read my post?
Let me change my semantics to avoid miscommunication:
It is poor organizational philosophy, to be really kind, to give away one’s players without a return- PERIOD.

  310. avatar James says:

    but thats the problem Adam

If Snow ends up dealing Z for a 2nd or 3rd, half the fanbase will praise him for getting a decent return for a 4th line guy, but the other half will blast him for trading a player who sticks up for our guys; which is a guy we desparately needed on this club.

Again Snow is damned by the fanbase no matter what he does.

  311. avatar Andy says:

Lets understand this people..we wouldn’t get Penner or anyone else because WANG DOES NOT WANT THIS TEAM TO SUCCEED..HE WANTS TO MOVE! Watch the movie “Major League”..you will get the picture

  312. avatar goislesgo105 says:

Dwayne Roloson, Nate Thompson and Sean Bergenheim playing for the Bolts, Robbie Schremp picked up by Atlanta and a possible bidding war going on for Radek Martinek. Seems the Isles DO have players that other teams want! GO GARTH, GO ISLES!

  313. avatar James says:

Andy, Wang was born in NY, trust me when I say this, he wants the team to stay

  314. avatar dedshark says:

andy…why in hell would we trade for penner?

  315. avatar streit02 says:

LA paid out the a$$ for Penner. It has nothing to do with the Isles.

  316. avatar Schultz39 says:

    When’s the draft?

  317. avatar Andy says:

I didn’t say we would trade for Penner..someone else suggested we would..and if Wang wants to stay why not put a good team on the ice, that way if he threatens to move a GOOD team playing to a packed house every night maybe the voters could get the morons out of office who keep blocking him from his Lighthouse project?? Making a team bad is no way going to get him public support

  318. avatar Cody says:

    So… nothing?

  319. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

Look at the very first post of this thread!!

  320. avatar admin says:

I would wait until about 3:45. Trades have to be emailed to the NHL by 3:00 to get in line for conference calls. There still could be moves around the league…CB

  321. avatar Andy says:

Arnott to Caps for Steckel? If true Devils won that one..

  322. avatar StevieL says:

another creative team building draft day by Garth!

  323. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

LA overpaid for Penner. No way the Isles had a shot without giving up a 1st and Dehaan. I’d pass, thanks. Penner isn’t worth it and only plays when he wants to, not at all what the Isles need.

  324. avatar Jake says:

Andy, whether they’re right or wrong, Wang and Snow are trying to build a team a certain way. They can’t attract free agents and they haven’t been able to do so since even before Wang owned the team. They want to draft players who are New York Islanders. Why would Wang and Snow have acquired Ryan Smyth 4 years ago and offer him more money than anyone else? Why would they offer Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek more money than anyone else? Why would Wang spend so much on architectural plans for the LHP? You’re entitled to your opinion but your argument is silly.

  325. avatar geduffer says:

Toronto trades John Mitchell to Rags for Future Considerations (that guy gets around. Arnott is apparently a Capital (heard from your pal Boomer on Extra Point.)

  326. avatar StevieL says:

    err , trade day! sorry!

  327. avatar geduffer says:

    Arnott for Steckel

  328. avatar joe says:

Arnott to Caps according to TSN TradeCentre.
    They are verifying the deal.

  329. avatar Andy says:

I like Steckel..he hit Crosby!!! Haha

  330. avatar Ryan says:

I’m sure the Garth Snow bashers will be out in full force, but you don’t make a trade for the sake of making a trade…there was nothing out there for him to trade. He set his return on guys like Martinek and Konopka and it looks like he didn’t get what he wanted. Sorry but I’m not trading the Islanders 1st rounder for Dustin Penner, a late round pick is a lot different then a early round

  331. avatar Nick says:

Katie says we are done,,can’t believe we didn’t trade Martinek pretty stupid move

  332. avatar derek says:

I don’t want to Jinx it, but Thank you Garth.

As CB mentioned, did Ferocious Friday mean as much to the higher ups as it did to us lowly fans. Looks like it may have been, at least, somewhat important.

Trading Konopka would’ve been a slap in the face of many of us fans. Thank you for not taking a 3rd round pick for him.

Also, we may get to see Marty retire an Islander. As a huge fan, I’m happy to see that.

  333. avatar EdTurner says:

    KateStrangNYI: #Isles officially done.
    ===================================

    Hey Katie -
You mean for the day, the season or their history on Long Island?

  334. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

308 pm – Katie Strang ” Isles officially done” LOL – Doing what?

  335. avatar StevieL says:

Katie Strang” Isles are done”! Did we ever start?

  336. avatar Exilesurfskim56 says:

Good for Snow to stand pat. Do not break up this core. Just add through the draft and when a deal makes sense do it. I for one stand behind the guys we have now. I can’t wait to see this thing come to fruition. Proud Islanders Fan here and no one can take that away.

  337. avatar streit02 says:

Although completely unamusing I am not disappointed. There wasnt much the Isles could have done. Only thing to look forward to is a solid draft and a healthy 2011-2012 season.

  338. avatar dedshark says:

The isles have been playing some pretty decent hockey. Dont know why ppl wanted trades. Not like we could have gotten a whole lot.

  339. avatar JD says:

I have no problem with Garth standing pat today. He tested the waters and probably didn’t have any decent offers for Martinek or Z. The real test should begin at the draft and July 1 to really see if Wang wants to improve this club.

  340. avatar Bleedorangeandblue says:

Katie Strang reported at 3:08 that the isles are officially done?? Don’t you have do something to be done with something? Another lackluster trade deadline comes and goes in isles country..not suprising

  341. avatar Anthony L. says:

Martinek isn’t worth a 2. Maybe if he had ONE healthy years. Let’s wake up.

  342. avatar James says:

I agree with the last 2 posts

I am not disappointed that nothing went down today, that being said we still do not know for sure yet as some trades may still be coming in

  343. avatar Reality Check says:

i wouldnt be shocked to hear that martinek or zenon were traded…..its just a feeling i have right now…trades are still coming in

….wouldnt mind trading radek; zenon, id like him to stay

  344. avatar UIF says:

Good for Garth on this one. No reason to get swept up in the trade deadline hype. As Joshua once said, “A silly game. The only winning move is not to play.”

  345. avatar hockeytime says:

    Weak deadline day. Snooze City.

  346. avatar James says:

Armchair GMs most of the time want a deal done for the sake of getting a deal done

and when they do not get their wish, they whine that the team missed out and blew it

Last I checked we got a 2nd round pick for Wiz and a decent D prospect in Wishart for a 41 year old goalie who was not coming back to LI next year

Id say that was not a bad return

  347. avatar AJAX says:

I guess after meeting with “consultant” Scott Gordon, Garth makes no moves. His goal this year remains, to make the playoffs.

  348. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

Assuming there are no last minute calls, it would appear that Garth was sticking to his demands of at least a 3rd (maybe a 2nd) for Z or Radek. Whenever a D-man would move, Garth’s leverage diminished and apparently, there was little interest (at that price) in Konopka.

So after numerous “refreshes” we’re left with Schremp for DiBenedetto.

We didn’t overpay for anyone, we didn’t give up any of the core, and the beloved Z is still an Islander.
Most of the board will be happy.

  349. avatar dhockey says:

All u geniuses who are praising Garth. “Oh. Don’t break up this team…please Garth…please!” I got news for u. WE HAVE BEEN IN LAST PLACE SINCE LIKE 2005. WE STINK AGAIN THIS YEAR. AND YOU FOOLS ARE BEGGING GARTH TO STAND PAT AND PRAISE HIM FOR SITTING ON HIS HANDS. ASIDE FROM HAVING JOHN TAVARES GIFT RAPPED AND LEFT ON HIS DOORSTEP, THIS BOOB HAS DONE NOTHING TO SPEED UP THIS REBUILD WHICH IS SURE TO RUN AROUND A DECADE…I am so tired of being disappointed year after year, and have to listen to ignorrant fans who whine about us potentially trading our 4th line center who stinks away for a high draft pick. Way to come up empty again Garth Slow. You are an atrocity

  350. avatar dhockey says:

I sincerely think Garth Slow overslept today and missed the deadline

  351. avatar derek says:

DiBo, eh. Didn’t he play with Martin and Katic?

  352. avatar geduffer says:

Talk about stock falling…Modin from Atlanta to Calgary for a 7th. Man it sucks to get old. I used to love to watch Modin.

  353. avatar 4ever says:

Y does Snow not trade Martinek for a pick or prospect. This deadline was a waste. Give up Schremp and keep Martinek, Gervais and Hillen. What a shame!!!

  354. avatar Cold Spring Harbor says:

No trades, who cares, go win some games and show some heart and employ a few more parking attendants while you are at it, what a dinosaur our “complex” is.

  355. avatar 93Miracle says:

#305 Snow did indeed play it right because I want Konopka here like everyone else, but for a #2 I probably do it. For a #3 whats the point? Do the people that want Penner, he makes a decent amount of money, but he is big so I would have looked into him, but I am not trading our FIRST ROUND Pick that might be in the top 5 for him! That would be a dumb move.

  356. avatar Andre says:

I think the market for Martinek and Kononpka was very low. Probably 4th rounders and lower. Makes no sense to make moves at that point. The other thing this deadline showed was that you have to build your team mostly through the draft as teams lock up their core players, and the price to acquire a very good but not elite player would blow up the rebuild as there are not many of these players available on the trade market. The UFA market is very bare too. It is very frustrating situation but it is what it is.

  357. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

Hopefully this trade dealine is not a sign of things to come this off-season. The team has a few RFA’s, but those signing are just to start. Snow has a lot of work to do. A healthy defence will help, but they need more than just that.

  358. avatar rob says:

what value do you think our guys really have… Our D is depleted with injuries. Why give Martinek away for a 3rd or 4th pick in a terrible draft year. Re sign the guy for cheap he is a good player esp when he is paired with streit. Ya he gets hurt (all our dmen get hurt, forgot a-mac missed a good amount of games with his hand) but he skates well has good position and can pass. at 1.5mill he is cheap. Trade just to Trade sometimes does not make any sense. Picks arecrap shoots especially 3rd and 4th ones and espicially in a weak draft.

  359. avatar jbassman72 says:

The Schremp project is over….thank the heavens! Telling me we couldn’t get a new popcorn machine for Bruno????

  360. avatar orngfan says:

if there were ANY offers, big mistake not trading radek martinek. i really don’t want him to come back on the team next season. and definitely don’t get me started with bruno gervais!

  361. avatar rob says:

All you Schremp lovers he will not be an nhl player… Schremp is a perimeter player who will never go to the dirty areas to make a play or create a scoring chance. He is small and is afraid of contact. He does not contribute on 5 -5 situations. Yes he can skate and when he does its the same thing. He enters the zone and pivets away from the play and carries the puck until he is out of room and forces himself to make a bad pass that leads to turn overs. He was being outplayed for positions by grabner and PA and there was no room for him. He is not a fore checker nor a grinder so he is limited on his rolls. He doesn’t even shine on the power play. IF Schremp was older would you guys not complain or are you blinded by his young age. He doesn’t have it he will do fine in a European league with a large ice surface.

  362. avatar TradeUp says:

The Isles don’t have the depth to make many moves. They are already calling up DiBenedetto for tomorrow’s game. Moving a couple players and getting nothing in return would remove any remaining flexibility for roster moves. Maybe moving Roloson taught Garth a lesson about having depth.

  363. avatar hale says:

    to post 347…umm streit..moulson..grabner…
draft poulin..martin..hamonic… garth has done nothing?? what do you want to do trade de haan or nino for dustin penner??

  364. avatar CM says:

Good on Garth. Isles did not have to do anything. Only two worth any value outside our prospects are ZK and RM. Good try.
Wish others would wake up. Cannot trade Gervais or Hillen if not worth anything. Also, there was nothing out there worthwhile.

  365. avatar admin says:

Post updated at 4:00 pm with why no deals were done. Thanks for hanging…CB

  366. avatar Ice Girl Dad says:

The Islanders standing pat is ok. Schremp’s defensive liability and non physicality is now Atlanta’s liability

  367. avatar IslesFan73 says:

Snow did fine doing nothing. Bottom line, the players we all want to dump have no value. Now go sign Konopka for another year, and maybe, just maybe we can get a legit FA this summer. P.S. Nino is on a goal scoring tear at Portland.

  368. avatar moonshine says:

now let’s see if this team can pick up north of twenty points in the last nineteen games. if they do you’ve got a chance at the playoffs next year.

a team shouldn’t be run according to fans’ wishes, but if it’s not a big deal it’s ok to give them a nod. keeping konopka is that. after all, he’s the guy that got talbot wiggling helplessly on the ice flat on his back, worse than johnson had dp.

  369. avatar joespo18 says:

The way things are going and the way things went today. I’m glad I’m an islanders fan and not a ranger fan. Aren’t you?

  370. avatar geduffer says:

Obviously I’ll reserve judgement on next season until I see what they do with retaining current players and improving. If Garth really doesn’t sign Z and really wanted to trade him, then he truly is a puppet. Sometimes you need to listen to your customers. It’s that simple. Also if they don’t do anything to try to move the process forward a little more quickly, then I won’t do anything to try and get into the building for any games.

CHARLES MUST GO, SNOW MUST GO!

  371. avatar ken says:

we should have grabbed one of those waived dman. not fair to rush people like katic, and wishart into such large roles. not to mention, its unfair to the paying fans and league, to see gervais out there.

  372. avatar Davey says:

I’m sorry, CB, but your 4pm recap post – you call Wisniewski a “struggling defenseman?” The guy doesn’t go 3 games without registering a point. I definitely agree with Snow doing a great job essentially turning the 3rd round pick they used to get him into a 2nd and a 5th. I just have a lot of trouble with giving him the title “struggling defenseman.”

  373. avatar claude says:

If i was a GM I wouldn’t give you a second rounder for Martinek either. His injuries are so bad he loses seasons at a time.
The guy’s tagged, . Betcha the Islanders can resign him for less or he can go play in the “K”. Hillen is better and younger anyway

  374. avatar admin says:

Did you watch James in his three months with the Islanders? “Struggling” was being nice…CB

  375. avatar Confused Islander Fans says:

fast foward to July 1, 2011, we will see the same thing which is nothing to improve the hockey team.

i bet PAP is enjoying that million plus salary while getting top minutes on another 30th place season. bravo Garth and Charles.

  376. avatar Cold Spring Harbor says:

So long Schremp, frees up #44 for Freddy Meyer if he comes back next year and is hopefully healthy once again.

  377. avatar Bob E says:

im totally fine with not parting with Martinek and Zenon K. If you dont get the return you better off holding on to them. Martinek is afforable and solid when healthy. ZK want to be party of solution here.

Sorry Schremp but they tried to help you. Gave you maximum icetime and pp time and you did nothing. Should schremp has scored vs caps saturday on wide open net we probably win that game. Best of luck to you.

  378. avatar Dan says:

It frustrates me that Tambellini stuck around for four years, but Schremp is bounced out after 1 1/2. IMO, Schremp has a better potential than Tambellini had.

  379. avatar Jimmiehill says:

Nhl should give out trophy to teams who save most money. Isles could have a party, charge parking fee to fans

  380. avatar Billy the Kid says:

    I hate Snow.
Was afraid to dump fan and player favorite Konopka.
I guess Z has too much popularity for the megalomanic Snow and Wang.

  381. avatar Davey says:

CB – I retract my statement. Should have realized you were referring specifically to his time with the Isles.

  382. avatar Bob E says:

CB how do you see picking up of campoli as smart pick up by hawks. Best trade i have ever seen is Snow sending Campoli and Comrie to Ott for 1st round pick.

Brock Nelson will be way better.

Campoli has never proved anything except he cant handle pressure or responsibility. Hillen is 5X better than Campoli and i put Campoli as equal to THE CHEF.

  383. avatar jon from nj says:

CB, just curious…how are you certain of Snow’s desire to rid of Konopka? The guy’s a fan favorite, seems to be a leader and buys-in. Do they want more production from him? Did they not know what they were getting?

  384. avatar Strummer's Army says:

UGH! We fans needed something positive even if it was small and we did not get it. Best thing that happened was dumping Schremp.

Where the hell is my 2nd round pick? If they resign Martinek I’ll go balistic. He’s old, fragile, and puts plenty of pucks in his own net. Not to mention he is not physical and will not defend teammates.

Konopka’s new contract should be signed tomorrow but “Mean Girls” Snow and Wang have found some reason not to like him (probably that he cares about the organization, his teammates, and Isles pride) and will allow him to walk this summer.

I just don’t understand this. You try to get any value for a guy your dumping. Martinek has hinted at returning home this summer so yes I’d have taken a 3 for him. How the hell did Ott get all that for for Crapolli and Snow gets zippo for Martinek.

This is proof positive that next time a media member or Isles official starts talking about how underrated Martinek is and how the rest of the NHL values him so much they are either lying, just repeating what someone told them and don’t really no what the hell they are talking about. He sucks just like I’ve said he does for years that is why Snow couldn’t get a damn thing for him. He has less value in the NHL then Chris Campoli, think on that!

Well you better figure something out Garth. This defense sucks. You need to get rid of the softies, no talents, and midgets. You only have 5 d-men in your entire organization you can even think about building around at this point and the mix isn’t quite right there. Hamonic, De Haan, Streit, Wishart, & MacDonald. That is it. I love Landeskog and Larson but we obviously need Larson more, even though we need physical skilled forwards too. THis team is just to easy to play against.

Where is the other heavyweight enforcer in the organization? Doesn’t exist. Joel Riechlecz in the past week has badly beaten up 2 not so sound not so much tigers and scored a goal against BST. John Erskine has had a very nice career in Washington. Godard has had a nice career (all guys Snow said couldn’t play…kinda like Milbury saying JP Dumont couldn’t play or Mike Rupp).

All Snow had to do was get the pick for Martinek and we’d have been happy but still understood there was work to do. He has a ton of work to do. This summer these all have to go, Comeau, Parenteau, Geravis, Martinek, Hillen, Eaton, Jurcina, Weight, & MOttau. NO MORE EXCUSES.

Don’t worry everyone Justin DiBenedtto is on the way to save the day.

  385. avatar pablo says:

Post 347 is dead on !!

  386. avatar James says:

    post 380

actually I think he is dead wrong.

This was the one deadline that I did not mind us not moving players. Have you forgotten we got a 2nd round pick for Wiz; who had played horrible for us in the first 3 months of the season?

We also got a defensive prospect who has been pretty good, for a 41-year old goalie who was not coming back to the Islanders. We also picked up Montoya for a 6th.

  387. avatar Islesfan3 says:

I really dont know what some people were exspecting today. I was happy we kept konopka he has a good presenece in the locker room. Im looking forward to draft day. Hopefully trade the pick and get something big in return. We need to trade more then just the pick but i think we need to speed this up a little bit like brian said. July 1 is a big time for us islander fans. Something needs to be done. If its like last years off season then i will be very dissapointed.

  388. avatar Jim Clark says:

Trade deadline has gone without any big Islander deals since Roloseon and Whiskey were moved several weeks ago. Next thing to look forward to is the Garth Snow Draft Lottery, the equivalent of the NBA Elgin Baylor draft lottery.

  389. best move snow made..schremp on waivers and getting picked up..fine with the isles standing pat..now, extend konokpa’s contract and I’ll be happy.

  390. Snow did a good job by calling their bluff and doing nothing. Look what stupid Ottawa did, giving up Kovalev for a 7th rd pick. I don’t care that no one else wanted him. You don’t give a team w/ Stanley Cup aspirations a substantial piece to their puzzle for a 7th rd pick. Both Konopka and Martinek love being Islanders and to trade them for a 3rd or 4th rd picks was not worth it. We already have two 2nd rd picks and possibly two 3rd rd picks? Were going to go into the offseason w/ a ton of depth on D’. Maybe we make a move than and get fair value. Martinek will probably resign for 2 yrs 4 mil. Konopka wants 1 yr 600,000. Make those deals and continue to build for the future. Time for Garth to go on some scouting trips to Drummondville, Red Deer, Kitchener & Niagra & lets make sure we hit a HR on this 1st rd pick.

  391. avatar 2Bit says:

Grabner needs to be signed to an extension now & I’ll be happy.

  392. avatar James says:

Yea I dont have an issue with no moves today as long as Snow does the right thing and re-signs the players he needs to Grabner, Z, Bailey, Okposo)

Also we need to make a move in the offseason, I can understand the frustration in the fanbase if we are not contending for the playoffs next year.

  393. avatar Youngest Fan Here? says:

probably pointing out the obvious, but justin dibenedetto being called up will likely move matt martin up to 3rd line at least where he can play with some better offensive talent and produce some points and cause some ruckus in front of the crease…just like all of us fans had been hoping for since late december/early january =D.

  394. avatar hale says:

to post 382..i’m not sure what wrecker fight you saw sunday but the one i saw ended with him going to the locker room bleeding..

  395. avatar moonshine says:

injuries seem to happen more on losing teams. get into a playoff hunt, and all of a sudden guys don’t tweak their groin as easily.

i too have some suspicion that the handwriting is on the wall for 2015. and that nyi aren’t really looking to do anything more than put on a bluff until then. but that’s why i’m glad they didn’t deal today. it would have been a fake way to create some buzz.

snow moved in standard gm fashion. he decided which pieces he might move, then sat back and waited for good offers. none came (surprise! :) ) so he stayed put. very simple.

  396. avatar pete debenedetto says:

I’m fine with keeping Martinek. Love that we still have Konopka….and Tavares should tell Garth as much.

Finally!!! DiBenedetto is up with the big club for a look. GO DIBO

  397. avatar Blizzard says:

…so did a great job for sure. He saved his team money.

  398. avatar Walt says:

    ZZZZZZZZZZ! WHAT? ZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

  399. avatar Mike from Philly says:

Wow…I see one common theme when it comes to the NY Islanders, “Saving the owner money”. Man it sure is fun to be a fan of this franchise.

  400. avatar anthony says:

    2 THINGS:

    1. we are stuck with ZK for 19 more games and lets hope that is IT!!!

    2. now the deadline has passed, its soooo funny HOW MUCH INTEREST they had in Bogozian and Hemsky, they were all but done deals.

Whats a worse joke and more accurate, the rumor site that dosent get mentioned here among TRUE AND REALISTIC NYI FAN’S or Garth ACCUALLY saying he CAN SPEND???? These should be interesting answers????

  401. avatar Dan C. says:

I don’t know why people are disappointed in this deadline. The Isles made their deals 2 months ago. They probably could have gotten more for Wiz and Rolo if they waited until now and/or packaged them together. In truth, I think the Rolo for Wishart deal was good, but I think more should have been gotten for Wisniewski.

There was no way any team was going to give up a 2nd rounder for Martinek or Konopka.

For those who call this an endless rebuild, I think the losing has gotten to your heads. Two years ago, Okposo led the team with 18 goals. This season, the Isles will likely have three 30-goal scorers (JT, Moulson and Grabner), two more that could approach 20 goals (Comeau and Parenteau) and two others capable of hitting that mark over the course of a full season (Okposo and Bailey). Nielsen is a solid two-way center. Hamonic and MacDonald look like legit top-4 defensemen. Add a healthy Mark Streit over the top and the rest of their d-men fall into place as a reasonably talented group that lacks a little toughness. They definitely need some stability in net, but I don’t think this team is that far away from making the playoffs next season.

Think back to three short months ago when there were all of these stories contrasting the great success of Duchene and the Avs with the dismal fortunes of Tavares and the Isles. Things can change quickly.

  402. Hey CB I got to disagree with you on Jim W. The WHOLE team was struggling for the first 3 months! One can only speculate how he would have done under Cappy once they got out from under Scott Gordon’s system. Many people thought we got a deal when we got him. I think a lot of his peformance had to do with Gordon and not getting the right partner for him on the ice. And yes many of Garth’s moves did save money for the owner – but at what expense. At the end of the day you still need to field a professional calibur team to get people interested in it! Don’t you think.

  403. avatar Erika says:

Good, it’s over! Glad nothing much happened. I was torn about Shremp, then again, I felt the same way about tambellini. They could score but are just not strong enough for the N.H.L.game. Glad Marty is still here. Cmon guys, he suffered all this time with us, it would be good for him to be here when the team turns the corner, as I believe they did with that Pitt game. Konopka has no talent, but the intangibles he brings are priceless, glad he is still here. I don’t know why we can’t make a serious offer to Parise, that or they better do lots of scouting and not go off the board with this year’s draft pick, ala Milbury, which is why Parise is not an Islander today. Seriously, who can really afford him except for us, and he would not even have to sell his house!!!

  404. avatar Stumpy32 says:

I’m more than fine with the lack of moves today. Everyone on here would have been up in arms if we just gave up Radek and Konopka for “just another draft pick.” So far, the Isles have signed the UFAs that they needed to sign. They will sign the RFAs they need to sign.

At the end of the day, this team is progressing. The Caps game showed that we can dominate the best…but not for 60 minutes. Throughout that game, my thought was constantly…just a couple of good FAs sign here, we are a solid playoff team now. That won’t happen, so we just need to plug away. Maybe Nino, DeHaan, and Rahkshani, Ullstrom, whatever added to the mix will spell playoffs. No idea…but we just need to assume that we’re not getting anything higher than third-tier FAs. Just keep the guys we have, and we’ll progress. Slower than we’d like, but we will progress.

  405. avatar Orange&Blue says:

Same ole boring trade deadline by Islanders.

Best news is that Konopka was not dealt. He deserves to stay.

Schremp going to Atlanta is also good news.

Lets see what the kid DiBennedetto has. We are turning into the Sarnia Sting. DiBennedetto, Martin, and Katic were all teammates in junior.

Katic has been impressive. Excellent skater, good poise, heady, and is not shy to make physical contact. Think he may be a sleeper.

For all the things we knock the Isles about we must give them praise for the job they with young dmen.

  406. avatar Blizzard says:

I have to be honest here. I really think the Isles will be a playoff team next year. Just as long as DP isn’t our number 1 goalie.

  407. avatar CJCB says:

ZK is to tough to be an Islander! Which is why waiving the “great” Rob Schremp all the more curious. Schremp is as SOFT as the Isles like to play so why the disconnect? Gone Scremp Sim and if only we could get rid of Brutal Gervais. Ducks pick up McGratten and Winchester and somehow my guess would be that if and when we play them next we would find a way to scratch Gilles??

  408. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

OMG lots of posts with nothing happening!
I believe the team is moving in the right direction, but we have to win next year and do what it takes to win next year. We also need to know the fate of our franchise as the stars seem to be aligning with Quebec City and that would be a real shame.

  409. avatar moonshine says:

if snow were a genius he’d have identified a couple of names (not the usual suspects) that would have been good fits, and used his own chips to try an approach.
but honestly, that’d be asking a lot of him.

so he went through the motions of putting a couple of guys on display to see who rushed in with a hot offer.
but honestly, it would have been asking a lot for volunteers to be the sucker.

  410. avatar Mike L says:

I guess it’s becoming an annual custom for us Isles fans to hate Snow after the trade deadline. You mean he couldn’t get a 2nd round pick for an injured D-man and a 4th liner? You mean he wouldn’t give Martinek away for a late round pick and leave Gervais as the oldest d-man? Sabres got Boyes for a 2nd and Snow couldn’t find a GM to give him a similar deal for a similar player? Wow I gotta hate Snow for not picking up any 1st line players for nothing and not giving away our lower skilled players for high draft picks. (sarcastic rant over)

  411. avatar Dan says:

Boyes to Buffalo for a 2nd???? We could have done that. Does he have a NMC?

  412. avatar Danny Hockey says:

CB. Seriously? 2 big moves? We got the 50th pick in a weak draft and maybe a 5th rounder for Wiz, then an average prospect at best for Roloson. Don’t sugar coat the fact that our GM has done a poor job at aquiring young assets. Tavares and Grabner were giftwrapped. Bailey, Trivino and Ness, his 1st 3 picks in a deep 2008 draft have all been major disappointments. This guy has made 1 major move on draft day 4 years ago (Smyth) and it crippled the prospect pool of the franchise for a 19 game rental who never showed any interest in staying here beyond a piss poor playoff performance. I am a huge fan of the youth movement but this franchise has done nothing but surround John Tavares with minor league talent on his line, and continue to draft players who will never be anything more than enigmatic or 3rd/4th line grinders

  413. avatar Danny Hockey says:

Sorry I meant deadline day, not draft day

  414. avatar Rob says:

    Post 403- Completely 100% agree.

  415. avatar Pnut says:

@Danny Hockey What?Crippled the prospect pool? Robert Nilsson was a bust before he was traded, O’Marra is now a big bust and what happened to that pick that the Oil got? and how did that “cripple” the prospect pool? C’mon he actually cared while Yash and Co turtled all over the ice.

If oft-injured Martinek was trade for a 2nd or a mid-level prospect, I would have packed Marty’s bags for him and wished him well. If he or DP or on this team 2-3 seasons from now we will not be a playoff team. NHL teams dont win with 2 guys that are so brittle.

  416. avatar 50 in 50 says:

Sign Z already. He will work for nothing and will protect and teach the young guns we are developing. He will take the heat off everyone with his personality and will continue to give great sound bites. Enough of the 3 ring circus lets become the main act…

  417. avatar MilburyRuinedMyLife says:

I’d love to see Garth extend Martinek…as we see every year, the Isles can never have enough D-Men…and this top 6 could not be considered a weakness:

    Streit MacDonald
    Eaton Hamonic
    Martinek Jurcina

    Extras: Motteau, Hillen

  418. avatar NYIFAN11 says:

CB: Why are you so certain that Snow wanted ZK gone if he likes it here and is a fan favorite??

  419. avatar MilburyRuinedMyLife says:

While I’m at it, this forward corps, all a year older, wouldn’t be terrible either:

    Moulson Tavares Parenteau
    Grabner Nielsen Okposo
    Comeau Bailey Nino
    Martin (Konopka) Hunter

  420. avatar Butts says:

Dibo will surprise ! This guy is a fine player. He is a money goal scorer and smart as there is in hockey. You can take this to the Bank.

  421. avatar Mike P says:

2 great moves today by Garth, 1 – NOT TRADING AWAY A YOUNG PLAYER FOR NOTHING OR OVERPAID 20 GOAL SCORERS. 2 – Waiving Schremp. Stay on course Garth, those who can’t see the kids growing together are blind and will jump on the bandwagon when this team starts becoming a contender.

  422. avatar D in BIG D says:

No big deal. Not surprised but now Garth should sign Z to 1yr deal @ least.Marty can go.Brutal better be gone.Hillen,Wyshart should be down in BP.Agree totally w/ comments about top 6 needing to get tougher.

  423. avatar anthony says:

Youngest fan here #391 and other Matt Martin fans,

Guys lets face it here Martin is not a 3rd line forward, at MOST he is an above average 4th liner who can hit, fight, and score a few more than guys like Tim Jackman, Nate Thompson (even he has 8 goals this yr). Martin is NOT a 3rd liner, he only is if 3 of the top 9 forwards are injured. This team has 4 LEGIT top 6 forwards at this point KO, JT, MM, and MG. Maybe Bailey can develop into 1 somehow, and we need 1 more this offseason.

  424. avatar IslanderFAN says:

Brutal Gervais??? only from New York Fans youll see this kind of disrespect *shakes his head*

  425. avatar jim says:

Why is everyone complaining im glad that we didn’t make any moves I love konopka and martinek. If they traded them you all would be complaining. Enough already just be glad they’re still on long island

  426. avatar streit02 says:

After reading what Snow had to say in the Newsday artilce about the deadline it puts you a little more at ease. Apparently the Konopka rumors were a little over exaggerated. He said he likes Z. Obviously if you can get a 2nd rd pick for him you have to do it, but im glad no one offered it. If Snow would just speak up more often people would stop speculating and blowing things out of proportion that sometimes arent even there. At least thats just my opinion.

  427. avatar Giz says:

I love Konopka for his heart n tuffness and he’s ok on faceoffs. Much rather have a guy like McCormick he has size 6’3 221 good on faceoffs n tuff as well, plus he has some offensive talent 8-9-17.

    McCormick 6’3 221
    Hunter 6’3 210
    Martain 6’3 215

Good big fourth line who all finish there checks n can score here an their. Plus McCormick n Martain r fearless.

  428. avatar Marc says:

Just wondering what the upside of keeping ANY pending UFA’s around if they plan on testing the market and if Snow is not sure he wants to attempt re-signing them. If he’s reluctant to give Martinek a salary that another team might throw at him on 7/1, why not take less than a 2nd rounder today?

  429. avatar Kbelanger33 says:

You people do realize we will have the same exact team for next season + streit-woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  430. avatar admin says:

    (424) Streit02: What was “over-exaggerated”? What was “blown out of proportion”? The NYI had two guys available: a fourth liner and a third-pair D. They wanted a certain price, there was very little interest – especially at the Islanders’ price. What was reported differently? CB

  431. avatar streit02 says:

“Although rumors surfaced yesterday morning that a deal sending Konopka to Anaheim was imminent, the discussions never moved past the preliminary stages. Snow likes Konopka’s toughness and leadership skills, attributes that have made him a favorite in the Islanders’ dressing room and among the fan base” – Quote from Newsday

CB, I was referring to the rumors that Konopka was going to Van, then he was going to Ana. Then it turned into Snow and mngmt not liking Konopka.

I didnt point to any information being incorrectly reported, but Snow stated that talks never got past a preliminary discussion.

I was referring more to people’s minds wandering regarding the situation rather than false reports.

  432. avatar 16 expiring says:

I have been critical of Snowang in the past to be sure, but I believe that they did the right thing this deadline by not doing anything. Making a trade for the sake of makes no sense, and as most knew, Snow was not in a good position to trade, anyway.

Many here are saying that July 1 will be the moment of truth for this organization, and they are 100% and unequivocally correct. The Islanders and snowang have to do something that hasn’t been done with the exception of 42 days under Neil Smith, and that is to find a way to attract a couple of UFA’s, such as Brooks Laich, Simon Gagne, Brad Richards, or Kevin Bieksa to come here (CB, I remember you saying that it was basically Neil communicating with player agents and sending faxes with generous offers – no schmoozing, whatsoever!). If the foundation of the core is bolstered, then I believe the rebuild will bear fruit on Long Island.

  433. avatar robert says:

glad to see that konopka is still here. of course its not that wang and snow wanted him here, but still good to see even if its just for 5 weeks or so. sad isnt it, he is the real captain and stands up for the team. remember in wangs world, you have to shut up and accept that things will always be run in a dysfunctional way. if you say something that makes sense…. regarding martinek, since he is gone after the season, snow should have accepted a third to fifth rounder. maybe since the isles are the only team to have their owner as the director of player development, snow maybe figured it would be too dificult for wang to pick someone past the second round. am i kidding? not really. nothing wang and snow does surprises me so i cant rule it out.

  434. avatar Danny Hockey says:

Well, CB. Maybe we should ask ourselves why Snow continues to over-evaluate his own talent. I don’t feel either player is worth a 2nd rounder so why should other NHL GMs. Without some major development, this team is headed for a top pick in the 2012 draft as well. Nino may not be ready next year. We rrently have 1 player in the organization with top line talent, who’s linemates are AHL all stars at best. Any Islander fan I talk to says the same thing. You take Moulson off Tavares’ wing, you can slash his goal totals in half. Maybe less. And Parenteau is clearly a 3rd liner at best. I’m afraid that if Snow doesn’t put some taqlent around John Tavares, he will eventually look to get out of town.

  435. avatar THE PORK CHOP EXPRESS says:

Other then Boyes leaving St. Louis I didnt think any of today’s trades were a surprise. Obviously, St. Louis didn’t want to have Boyes 4M on their team.

I am content the isles didnt make any moves for low draft picks. Keeping Martinek and Z around is good thing for the rest of the year. We need players and not picks.

As for the upcoming offseason, I hope the isles scout very well and make some quality picks, fill bridgeport with their 2008-2010 draft picks and let them develop, scout other teams for moulsons/grabners. This is the only way we are going to move forward. Lets face it. Excluding our young core we do not have any assets to trade.

  436. avatar Brian G says:

Snow is not a good GM. If Martinek & Konopka do not have a future here, then why not get anything for them? he seems to do this every year at the deadline. He held off on trading Park – why??? this has been a bottom 5 team going on 4 years

  437. avatar Hockey Guy in Canada says:

Hold on CB, when you post things like “If the Islanders move Konopka today, it will confirm that they didn’t believe the Friday war against the Penguins was any big deal, along with my suspicions that management are not big fans of Konopka…CB”
Whether this is true or not (exaggerrated?) its a pretty inciteful statement and I can see why someone might get the idea that management were looking to move Konopka for a reason other than getting a certain value back.

  438. avatar 4theisles says:

The FA market and how Snow handles it will tell us a lot about the direction of the team and perhaps something about a new building. The present lineup is short of making the playoffs next year without some help at D and maybe in goal. An argument to stay pat upfront can be made.

  439. avatar jbassman72 says:

Radek was no doubt one of my favorite isles. Quietly emerged, lots of offensive upside, never held up in laying a hit, repeatedly held duties marking opponents top line. Quite steady and just went about his business. Can we HONESTLY say that about him anymore??? Most important is how many games he loses to injury. This constant flux of inserting ahl’ers is so freakin old, and way more detrimental on D. Disturbing to go into another season waiting for him to break.

  440. avatar jbranny says:

Strummer #382 – Wake up! You wan’t to get rid of Martinek, Eaton, Hillen, Mottau and Gervais next year and keep Wishart? Wow, are you blind or don’t know hockey.

Where are you going to find replacements for these guys, especially on an Islanders budget. All told this year these 5 you want to get rid of made about 6 million dollars…TOTAL. The top four with the Blackhawks (Keith, Seabrook, Campbell and Hjalmarsson) will make well over 20 million next year. It will take MONEY to upgrade this blue line. Big money the Isles don’t have or won’t spend. They might lose Gervais or even Hillen (but I doubt it) next season, but the rest of the guys are under contract and are here to stay. I know you are frustrated like the rest of us, but your rant just does not make any sense.
