NHL SUSPENDS TREVOR GILLIES FOR TEN GAMES
Over last two games, Islander is sentenced for 19
3:10 pm: In an intriguing subplot, the Islanders prioritized taking their team photo today over sending representatives with Gillies to his hearing in Toronto. Gillies, who just sat out nine games, has now been suspended by the NHL for ten games. Cal Clutterbuck did not have a hearing for his penalty for hitting Justin DiBenedetto from behind. Colin Campbell ruled that Gillies targeted Clutterbuck’s head.

Um…really? 10? The absurdity of the Colie’s arbitrary decision making has gone to new lengths. Yes, a suspension was warranted. But I’d be interested to know what Lucic gets for cross-checking Dominic Moore in the face last night when Moore wasn’t looking. I’ll guess, 2…if any. Typical.
-
10 games is a joke, Clutterbuck should get 5 then. Gillies may have no talent but how does that hit warrant 10 games.
-
I have no problem with the suspension provided the NHL applies this type of punishment CONSISTENTLY. Meaning, next time a prior offender delivers a headshot, the length of his suspension increases.
Otherwise, it will just further the notion that there seems to be one set of rules and justice for the league’s elite teams, and another for those out of the playoff picture.
-
Hate to say it, but Gillies deserves it as a two-time offender this year. You can’t take shots at the head like that anymore.
-
Ten games is way over the top!! I also believe a suspencion was warrented, but ten games, come on!
-
Maybe this migh get Gillies to pick his spots better. I like the element he brings to the Islanders, but he needs to be smarter in his methods of enforcement. Maybe I’m not in the majority, but I like the fact that we are no longer a soft team.
-
i have no problem with it really. Truth be told, I don’t like Gillies. I appreciate his heart & willingness to defend his teamates, but he & players like him really don’t serve much of a purpose in the NHL anymore.
If his role is meant to deter other players from taking runs at teamates then why do we see skill players getting crushed all the time? Why is it that DiBo was crushed with a dirty hit while Trevor was on the ice.
If a player gets hit, then the 2 heavyweights go and fight. The person who did the hitting didn’t learn a lesson.
Haley Konopka Martin is such a better 4th line anyway.
-
There are trying to make an example of Trevor. Not really fair, but we paid the devil for our 4 cups. This is our life now as an Islanders fan.
-
If they’re gonna “make an example” or pile it on because he just came back from the 9-game suspension, why not just make it 17 games and end his season? If they REALLY want to make a statement, that would certainly be one. THAT IS, if they would hold all repeat offenders in the entire league to the same measure(s) in similar circumstances.
-
Gillies should have gotten 2 games. Clutterbuck should get the **** beat outta him. Isles need more players who are tough…
-
Interesting but not surprising. The problem with NHL discipline is its all over the board. Maybe in their next CBA the NHLPA can push for something a little more concrete in terms of suspension length and little less open to someone’s call. Example, head shot 5 games… escalating from there for repeat offenders. Maybe the idea is wacky, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the length of some of these suspensions. Sometimes what looks bad doesn’t even get a blip. In the case of Gillies… one game back and he’s already back on the carpet. If this had happened next season the outcome would have been different. Either way Gillies time seems to be up on the Island.
-
#7 Van, I think you’re right-on. I love the toughness too, but the head shots have to go.
-
That hit in all honesty wasnt that bad. He hit him square in the shoulder forcing him into the boards. Gillies is just bigger and stronger so Clutterbuck got hurt. The hit Clutterbuck laid onto DiBennedeto was a lot worse. There honestly should be a lessened suspension if any at all.
-
Huh Isle be Damned??
The person who did the hitting on DiBo did learn a lesson. Gilles crushed him. I think Clutterbuck will think twice before he decks one of our players again. -
I don’t want to see cheap hits in the league and teams retaliating because it often escalates and then players get seriously hurt. But it must be mentioned that YouTube has literally hundreds of clips from years past & more-so-presently of players throwing flagrant elbows to the head. This problem of dirty hits has existed for a long long time. It is not going to go away anytime soon. In the meantime, i am sure the Islanders will lead the league in Man-Games Lost to Suspension next season.
-
How many games did Stephen Weiss get for his hit to Comeau’s head? That was a 5 min major and game misconduct and caused a concussion that made Blake even miss some games. The answer is 0.Its a complete joke.
-
The amount of games is not consistent with other suspensions. What else is new with the jerk, and Islander hater, Colon? With that said, the next time Gillies should just drop the gloves. Or at the very least, stop going for head shots.
-
how inconsistent. how come no one is looking at the Clutterbuck hit from behind? it seems as though if you stay down and are injured more punishment is handed out…
what a joke.
i watched the Bruins – Tampa game last night. HARD PHYSICAL GAME. CROSSCHECKS. HIGH HITS. AFTER WHISTLE. FROM BEHIND. CREASE CRASHING. HIGH STICKING. But it’s the Bruins, so it’s OK. Isles are targeted by NHL….
that’s OK. this will all make it that much sweeter when we’re holding the Stanley Cup again…in 2015
-
And nothing for Clutterbuck, who, truth be told, layed on a worse hit during that incident. Typical.
-
I have no problem with tough penalties for dangerous hits. But Clutterbuck’s hit was worse, and he gets 2 minutes for it and nothing else?
-
I agree with the Weiss hit and the Hit on Green from washington from Stepan. Campbell is a joke. Gillies didn’t deserve ten, I thought between 3-6. I get the repeat offender angler, but Cooke is on suspension 4or 5 and he gets off lightly every time. Anyplace we can send donations to the team to cover Gillies lost salary? That would really irritate Bettman
-
I really wish the NHL & NHLPA would adopt a committee approach, like a CBA that outlines fines, suspensions, etc. as a framework. I realize each hit is different but they also need to be taken into context. The dart throwing that Collie Campbell and the league uses in doling out it’s punishments (or lack thereof) is more embarrassing than any act of the players.
-
Not a surprise, considering it’s a second offense by a fringe player on a team that’s easy pickings for criticism. Let’s see the league show some guts and suspend a more established player on a “real” team (can you say (“Matt Cooke”) for 10 games. What a joke.
-
Gillies should be gone. He is what is wrong with the NHL. He has no talent and is a goon. He is a waste of a roster spot. Sure Campbell is inconsistent but Gillies deserves the suspension.
-
it’s funny. Gillies is a goon, right?
But isn’t what Colin Cambell doing the same thing? isn’t a GOON someone who picks on the little guy? exactly what Colin is doing to Gillies and penalizing him for?
Who’s going to suspend Colin Campbell? or i guess it’s OK for him to be a goon…
I’d like to see him suspend a bigger name for the same type hit – from the side, a little high….
-
As usual it’s overkill, 5 games as most and that’s only because he is a repeat offender.
-
I understand why he got 10 games. one you in doghouse thats it. what i do take exception is Clutterbuck hit on DiBo that initiated that was WAY MORE DIRTY.
Had Gillies not been a goon and kept his arms down on that hit, it probably wouldnt even have been a penalty.
-
Is it really worth talking about anymore? The league is a joke. We know it. Theres nothing we can do about it. We can all sit back and watch Lucic’s cross check to Dominic Moore’s head last night go unsuspended and laugh. Theres nothing we can do and these guys are eventually going to run the league into the ground as long as they get support from the “experts” and no one is up in arms until someone from their favorite team gets hit with unfair discipline. Guess we’ll have to wait for one of Lemieux’s troops to get an unfair suspension. Although that will probably never happen.
-
I appreciate Gillies willingness to protect his teamate but he deserves that suspension. He clearly intended to injure Clutterbuck.
I also think Clutterbuck deserved a match penalty as well, but that’s just the bias against the Isles at work.
-
What a joke.
-
Every analyst points Gillies goal totals as to why he shouldnt be in the league and why he should get a lengthy suspension. So, what they are really saying is that the more goals you score, the more leeway you have to dish out dirty checks. Thats not a biased comment. Makes sense. So Stamkos should have about 5 freebies earned by now.
-
Time to give Trevor his walking papers. Can appreciate his heart and passion for his team, but time go let him go. He’s a PR nightmare for this team. Garth & Co. would be best served to let him go if they want to stop looking like a sideshow to the mainstream media, regardless of the fact that they aren’t. 10 games is fair, it was a dumb move on Trevor’s part, regardless of Clutterbuck’s incident.
-
gillies deserves more. as much as i loved ferocious friday, the hit on tangradi and subsequent taunting was indefensible. and then in his first game back he goes headhunting. for a guy that plays 2 mins a game, he isn’t worth the headache.
-
This is a joke. Clutterbuck was exaggerating it and Gillies never made an effort to have contact with his head. If the refs called it right, it wouldn’t be an issue. Not to mention, where is the accountibility for Clutterbuck drilling his teammate from behind?
-
THE HIT WASNT EVEN IN THE HEAD OR FROM BEHIND!holy hell Campbell, can you make it anymore obvious how much you hate the Islanders?Where’s Clutterbuck’s hearing?his hit was worse then Gillies.i hate the NHL so f*****g much.when will someone say something for the NHL to look into the bias of Campbell or just take Campbell out cause his suspensions are so dumb for the entire league.hes a joke and so is the NHL.
-
The topic of discussion is not whether or not what Gillies did was wrong. I think every single person will admit it was a bad hit and it was wrong. The problem is the inconsistency and obvious showing of favoritism by the league and its highest ranked officials. Anyone with half of a brain can clearly see this. Put together a bunch of clips of dirty hits and then list the games each player was supsended right next to the video. It will be the best comedy of the year.
-
And Matt Cooke continues to fly under the radar!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Are they joking?? that wasn’t even a “HIT” he shouldn’t have even gotten a penalty. What a bunch of garbage that is.
This is HOCKEY folks! not baseball. People get hit sometimes.
-
The Gillies hit was not from behind, gets 10 games and Clutterbuck get 0 games from hitting DiBenedetto? Unbelievable.
-
I really hate the way the NHL has become dancing balerina’s. When I played a check like that was “a good solid hit along the boards”. We have become a bunch of, how do I put this, young female cats. 10 games is not warranted, one maybe two games at most.
-
“I think every single person will admit it was a bad hit and it was wrong” not me. I’ve seen worse go uncalled. It’s because it’s Gillies and they want to stop him from doing his job. Protecting his teammates.
Also I think Jeremy Roenick was WAY out of line last night saying Gillies should be out of the game and is giving the game a bad name. Really? It’s all Gillies fault? come on now JR. I thought more of you before last night. You sound SOFT since retiring.
-
This whole thing is a joke. The hit wasn’t at cutterbuck’s head, and cutterbuck got nothing than a 2 minute penalty for boarding and later a 10 minute misconduct for inciting. Colin Cambell is an idiot, a joke, and a complete waste. Once again for Bettman’s supposed love for the Islanders, he finds a way to screw them again……the NHL is a flat joke
-
If Gillies played for the Red Wings or Penguins, he wouldn’t have even gotten a penalty.
-
Seems like the league is trying to send a message.. but its really a big failure. Gillies was getting suspended and it shouldve been 3-5 at most. These hearings are a joke.
The Isles shouldve sent a rep with him and rescheduled their photoshoot to thursday.
-
There’s a way to stand up for your teammates without hitting guys from behind (or the side). I like Gillies but he got what he deserved. Next time, get in Cutterbucks face and make him (or whoever) drop the gloves and fight man to man. He’ll surely get game misconducts every time he fights because Campbell has him a marked man, but at least he’ll get his paychecks.
-
I have no problem with the suspension but if he isnt on the Islanders that is a 5 game max. Why did Clutterbuck only get 2 minutes? Trevor next time drop the gloves and cave his face in , that you can do , but shots to the head are a no no.
-
i can’t believe the league is seriously handing gillies this suspension. this was nothing, not even a penalty worthy hit. a normal, legal hit. the ilsanders are being pushed around by the nhl! i am so pissed!!!
-
What a joke.
10 games?!!!!
Should Trevor be suspended….Yes
Frigging 10 games?!!These guys make Bud Selig look like a genuis.
-
his left hand/forearm clearly hit CC in the face I did not think that hit deserved even a 5 game suspension…..the misconduct would have been enough….
-
I agree with the Isles not sending a rep to Gillies’ hearing. They knew it would be a total waste of time, and that Campbell was going to throw the book at him regardless.
I am so sick of having the Isles get longer suspensions than others for similar transgressions.
-
The NHL is a Joke! Campbell is a Joke too! Maybe he still holds on to the Islander-Ranger rivalry from up in Toronto.
I know as CB said in his Puck Daddy piece that we will defend our guys; but how can Campbell look anyone in the eye with a straight face and say that was intentional, or even dangerous? Most of the hit was side and torso! PA-Lease!!!!!
The NHL really needs to clean their house, they are already the number 4 pro sport, and may soon drop to 5 with 4 vacant!
-
Trevor should have asked Colin Campbell for the Matt Cooke get out of jail free card.
-
Let’s see what the NHL gives Lucic for his hit last night. This is a joke!
-
NHL is a garage league. Campbell, Bettman, Daly, nothing but an overpaid old boys club. You couldn’t find a lawyer in the universe who could make heads or tails out of their arbitrary decision-making. Lack of legislation, lack of consistency, and the most obvious -
-
The NHL needs to get their act together on this. Gillies is a repeat offender and gets 10 games. Matt Cooke is a repeat offender and gets mentioned for the Lady Bing. Come up with a system that for your 1st offense you get this many games. 2nd double the amount of games. 3rd offense your season is over.
-
so that gets 10 games but Scott Walker sucker punching Aaron Ward in the face gets a -1 game suspension? COLIN CAMPBELL CONSISTENTLY EMBARRASSES THE NHL.
-
10 games is a joke just like all you fans who dont back gillies and say that he deserves it,, clutterbuck is a pussy (like some of the posters here) who took a dive to avoid a fight, take out the instigator rule and see how many hits from behind and to the head are iliminated..
-
Again, the other team gets away with the “dirty” hit. Clutterbuck CLEARLY hit DiBenedetto in the back, Gillies hit Clutterbuck from the side/front. Gillies went for the head, that warrants a suspension. But Clutterbuck layed a dangerous hit as well which should have gotten him at least 3-5 games. This is why we had and will have more Ferocious Fridays. The league does not respect ANY Islander player as evidenced by their repeated lack of punishment towards opposing players.
-
Totally unfair punishment in relationship to the crime and how other criminals are sentenced. Two games would have been about right.
-
A league that is entirely media reactive. Gillies hit wasn’t anywhere near as bad as several hits to the heads of players on any given night. Clutterbutt gets nothing? Gillies gets 10 for retaliating. And Cluttbutt is also a repeat offender with borderline hits to injure. Steve Ott went after him for the same thing when he did it do Brad Richards. Lucic no penalty, no review. Paille hit to Hamonic’s head nothing. I am all for fairness and getting rid of head shots, but lets get rid of the kangaroo NHL court and bring in a real system. ALL HITS TO THE HEAD SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY BE REVIEWED>
-
10 games is ridiculous! COLIN CAMPBELL is an idiot, plain and simple. It’s like the guy never played before. To say that Trevor intentionally went for the head is a joke. Snow should appeal! Any fan that doesn’t back Trevor is an embarrassment. I know people who know him and he’s a good person. I hope for the leagues sake that Colins’ son doesn’t hit someone from behind or elbow someone in the head. Would love to see how they handle that! Trevor, most of us support u, don’t change a thing!
-
OMG! 10 Flipping Games!
When is Cal Clutterbutt’s hearing scheduled?……but then again when were the hearings for the headshots and muggings on Comeau, DiBennedeto, Nielsen, Tavares et al?
When is Charles Wang going to demand th
at Colin Campbell be removed as the NHL’s Clownish Dean of Disciple?Campbell has repeatedly shown that he has it in for the Isles and never misses an opportunity to stick to them. There is no benefit of the doubt when it comes to Colin Campbell, playing for the Isles make you guilty and for the other 29 teams, it’s open season on Islanders players because Colon Campbell has your back!
I hope Trevor Gillies’ teammates donate some cash to his family for his sticking up for them despite the NHL mandate that Islanders are not worthy of protection, which is why The Friday Fight Night happen in the first place!
Bring me the head of Colin “The Bleeding Colon” Campbell! As long as Colin’s crap stinks up the league, the headhunting will continue, but at least Trevor Gillies has been run out of the league like a Matt Cooke hit from behind!
ps: Mad Mike Milbury should be silent and be thought the idiot that he is!
-
When Gillies returns he really needs to play it cool until April 8th. Then he can end his career on Matt Cookes face & skate off with a big F U to the NHL.
What a joke. I agree Gillies can be a bit of a meat head in that he gets blinded by rage in wanting to protect his teammates. I admire his passion and how the team plays when he’s on the bench. While he deserved a few games, this hit was not THAT bad. 10 games is way over the top, but I guess that’s what is to be expected when you’re a repeat offender. However, the fact that Colin Campbell can turn a blind eye to Clutterbuck’s hit on DiBo is a joke. I guess it’s okay to check a guy from behind and nearly drive his head into the wall, but not okay to give a little rub to a players face with your glove. The double standards and inconsistency is ridiculous.
-
question: which part of a players body did milan lucic target when he crosschecked a player in the …. HEAD …. last night? punishment pending?
-
in all fairness…dibenedetto was going for the puck. he beat clutterbuck to the puck, and turned to the boards. clutterbuck was racing for the puck, and he could do nothing but go directly into dibo. hence the ugly looking hit. gillies sees it, and in a moments notice, reacts to protect his teammate.
what gillies got was fair, although i do feel for him. in a split second, gillies had to make a decision. if his forearm was 6 inches lower, we’re talking two minutes for charging. it’s a game of inches and milliseconds, and a few of those either way can cost a person their career, whether he be on the giving or receiving end of the hit.
-
bottom line…gillies is a repeat offender who left his feet on a hit after the whistle. head shot or not he probably deserves this. i like gillies and this he is a team guy, but people do crazy things in the heat of the moment. what makes it worse is that it’s his first game back. i do however, take some issue with clutterbuck getting nothing. it does not appear as if the playing field is level. i have no problem with the nhl taking action as long as it is fair across the board. i would really like to see some harsher punishments for some other guys around the league.
-
Gillies is a cementhead. He had to know that he’d be watched and he still did that. Yes I have a problem with Clutterbuck getting off with no suspension, and yes, Colin Cambell is a jerk, but Gillies deserved what he got and should be in the pressbox for the rest of the season. For next season the Isles need to sign a free agent enforcer who can actually contribute on the ice for 8-10 minutes a game.
-
Check out this Hollweg hit this year – repeat offender gets 3 games
Holweg from behind
-
Nothing will change until the NHLPA negotiates and forces the NHL Overseers are forced to have ruelds and penalties spelled out. If not we will continue to see favortism and arbitrary rulings.
-
I would have no issue with this if the same standard was applied across the league, but it is NOT. Milan Lucic cross checked another player in the head the other night. How long will his suspension be?
-
10 gamess might be excessive even for a repeat offender. Bottom line, Gillies is a waste of a roster spot anyway.
-
Sorry Chris for the repeated posting here but..read your twitter and your prediction that Gillies would get a three game suspension…
You were really far off there!
-
I agree Clutter-upchuck’s hit on Dibenedetto was much worse than Gillies hit on him, but Gillies is not Colin’s B*ITCH and he needs to hit hard but keep it below the neck. I don’t like seeing any player suffer concussions. You can be just as effective and more entertaining with a Kasper type hip-check or crashing a player hard into the boards. Keep the arms down.
-
I would not call Gillies a goon – that is showing too much disrespect to goons – enough is enough with him – get some tough guys that can play hockey and not this embarrassment to the team and the owners and the fans
-
Let’s bully the league and bring up our MMA prospect Jeremy Yablonski and let him skate around for a couple of games. Send a message to the league that if they suspend our guys teams will feel the repercussions, especially the perfect child syndrome teams like the pens and caps…
-
Once again the NHL and Colin “needs to be fired” Campbell they are incompetent!….why is Clutterbuck not suspended from his dangerous hit from behind?????
-
I’m not sure what video Campbell reviewed. What I saw was a hit from the side to the shoulder where his hands came up. Clutterbuck hit from the back into the boards. Neither his was legal. Can someone explain why one is 10 games and the other is nothing? It’s beyond a joke at this point.
-
To me I don’t even think it should be a suspendable offense…the hit looked clean to me. I hope they bring back Gillies next year. He’ll be cheap and you use him on special occasions. Rangers, Pittsburgh Philly etc…2-way 500,000…done…keep an animal in your yard tied up to keep the crooks away…the league thinks he’s nuts….good…deters the Cooke’s of the world.
-
I’ve watched the video about 5 times and I still see no hit to the head on Clutterbuck. It looks like a shoulder to body to me and I’m not joking at all. I think prior circumstance played a HUGE role in making this a LOT worse than it really was.
-
Anyone remember Matt Carkners sucker punch that landed Tim Jackman with a broken orbital and two months on the injury list? Mike Mottau’s flying elbow to Frans Nielsens head that took him out of the lineup for more than half a season? Campbell didn’t feel these were suspendable offenses, but a hit like Gillies (which happens all the time) gets 10 games? Just because the Isles are out of the playoff race shouldn’t make them fair game to be made an example of. Campbell must go!
-
T next time Gillies should just drop the gloves and take MANY SHOTS at the guys’ head the legal and acceptable way.
This is all a joke. For the last two seasons + we have seen guys take runs at Isles’ players heads and receive no more that 5 minute majors. No suspensions. Why is that, Colon?!?!? The NHL “justice” system is a joke. How about that hit on Franz? How about that hit on Comeau? How about the countless other hits we have seen? Pathetic.
-
The hit was not from behind nor was it a head shot as some media has reported. Gillies did with his left arm give him a punch to the face but we’ve all seen far worse (like the CLutterbuck hit on Dibo seconds before).
Damn you Garth Snow for thinking getting you photo taken is more important then this. How dare you and Wang not have one of your players best interest at heart.
I call on the NY Islanders to finally rise up and fight for themselves. Appeal the suspension and go after Campbell’s job. Everyone knows Campbell has a hatred for the Isles, a few other teams and certain players and he uses every opportunity he can to burn them. It is an abuse of his authority and it has to stop. Actually it gives other teams unfair advantages. YOu saw the way the refs targeted Gillies to toss him. No one else gets tossed for that hit, except someone Campbell has put a target on the back of. If Gillies got tossed and suspended then Clutterbuck needed to.
Gary Bettman is a jerk for allowing this to happen over and over. He might not know enough about hockey to know what Campbell is doing but it his job as the boss to ensure every is treated fairly and the Isles are not.
It makes me hate the NHL.
Damn you Snow and Wang fight for your team and yourself! You see how much Mario cries and complains and his group of thugs get no penalty or get off light even when they do. Cooke deserved way more then 4 for his last act and the fact no Pen was fined or suspened but Godard (who deserved way more then 10 games) is a joke. Geez the Godard hits to the head of Hillen was far worse then what Gillies did to Clutterbuck.
-
What bout the hit to the head of Martinek? We got a 5 minute PP out of it but Marty hasn’t played since that game. Of course no hearing or suspension for that clear cheap shot to Marty.
-
Give Gillies 10 games, 100 games, 1,000 games, does it really matter? This guy should not wear an NHL jersey again. This was a guy who was punching an injured player then continued to taunt him after it was clear that he was injured. Then in his first game back and on his 3rd shift, he delivers another questionable call?
Forget what he deserves or that Clutterbucket wasn’t hurt, Gillies provides nothing to the team and put his team on a 5-minute major penalty kill. Get rid of him, he is easily replaceable.
-
It would be nice if everyone could word their posts in a PG manner. There are kids that read this blog.
-
The ten games was because he just finished serving the nine games. If that was the first incident then it would have been much less. I do agree, Clutterbucks hit was worse and he should have been given a major and suspension also. Brad May just said on HNIC radio, that if guys would just square up an fight there would actually be less violence in the league, the dirt hits would stop, if guys would man up
-
now I like Gillies, but I am not going to say what he did wasn’t a completely dirty attempt to injure.
here’s something interesting for you, go to youtube and search for matt cooke on fedor tyutin. Load it, pause it, make the window half the size of the screen.
now go do the same for gillies on clutterbuck.
Play them both at the same time and if you don’t agree that Gillies isn’t being made an example of while Cooke is being handed a slap on the wrist, I don’t know what you’re watching.
I agree with a 10 game suspension for Gillies for a cheap hit, but not if it’s compared to Cooke’s leaping hit from behind. Neither player that was hit suffered any injury that caused them to miss a game, so it’s not based on the result and Cooke has a longer history of this than Gillies does.
Campbell needs to get the hell out of the NHL office and hand this over to someone who can actually be objective and consistent.
-
Complete double standard by the NHL. Campbell should be fired. Bettman’s leadership must be questioned for keeping Campbell on board.
By the way, watching Mike Milbury criticize Trevor Gillies almost made me want to puke.
-
Colin Campbell played for the Canucks when the Isles beat them in the cup finals. The Islanders cost Campbell a ring and his name on the cup. Then Campbell coached the Rangers and his firing strangely qualified him to become league czar of discipline and bring in perenial Lady Byng candidate and ex Ranger Kris King as his assistant. He has an ax to grind with the Isles and uses the inconsistency and ineptitude of his own office to mask his personal agenda.
-
Agree with the decision. And I have to disagree with anyone categorizing Clutterbuck as a dirty player. He reminds me of a skilled Steve Webb. He hits often(league leading 298), but rarely gets penalized (had fewer PIM’s than Tavares before that 10 min misconduct versus the Isles).
-
I think the league is on a slippery slope hear. This just seems to be another arbitrary decision on a hit you probably see at least once a week. The league needs to break these suspensions into components, ie 5 games for hit to the head, 2x for repeat offender, etc. I saw Nielsen take a shot to the face that went uncalled a few weeks ago and when I reviewed the video it is clear that both the ref and a linesman were watching the play. I don’t even think Matt Cooke got 10 games for his latest cheap shot. On the positive side, Gillies should be back for the last Pens game. I can expect warnings from the league, but really, what will that amount to. Capt Jack just has to slap the cuffs on him and warn him not to start anything. He will get jumped and that is when the fun will start (or all help will break loose). That will likely be Gillies “Swan Song” with the Isles as I can’t see them wasting roster space on his next year if they have Martin and Konopka.
Frankly, TG’s theatrics on the bench before the drop of the puck the other night bordered on the psychotic. As hockey fans, I know we all love the move “Slap Shot,” but life imitating art is a bit much, especially in this era.
CB – Maybe you can answer this question? What has the Gillies name done for his career? Has it carried him along with teams hoping he might actually be a fraction of Clark Gillies? And have the Isles coddled him here to long for that very reason?
-
10 games only solidifies Colin Campbell as a complete and utter joke… incapable of using consistent logic or methodology to determine the length of suspension.
I’m sure anything close to a mathematical equation (whether it be 1+1=2 or c-squared = a-squared + b-squared) would pop that bald guy’s noggin.
-
Anyone watch the Bruins/Lightning game last night?
Lucic’s, UNPENALIZED charging and cross-check to the head of Dominic Moore?
Not excusing Gillie’s hit by any means, BTW.
Call Gillies every name in the book.
Blame him for everything that’s wrong in NHL.
Heck, even blame him for the sub-prime banking mess.
BUT…BUT that hit on Clutterbug wasn’t THAT bad when compared to the seemingly infinite # cheap shots and ugly hits in the game of hockey.
Campbell’s and the *Media’s* sudden high standard of nobility completely wreaks of *clay feet* and hypocracy. -
Campell is a joke. We all know milbury is. Im not surprised by any of this it will be a joke until clown campbell is fired or hopefully steps aside. Msybe Wang should apologize from the isles for beating Vancouver and costing him the cup. I dunno anymore
-
Collywood has never forgotten the beaten he and his canucks with those hideous jerseys took at the hands of Bossy, Potvin, Gilles, Trots and Smitty (to name a few) during the 82 cup run of our beloves ISLES. And throw in his stranger connection and there you have the don’t call me francis anger towards the ISLES. However, what gets me is nimrods like joe mic-a-fooly, doing what he does so horribly and annoying, speaking during the rangers game on how horrible the hit clutternuts took…But I have to admit sammy nosen steps in and says clutternuts was given a two minute penalty for his hit prior to the hit he took. never thought I would say this but atta boy sammy..can we swap sammy for howie and sparky…no I like sparky and want that gig when I retire..hockey world we do have a pulse..GO ISLES..and Trevor G. since you have a few days off now I’ll be at disneyland tomorrow you know the happiest place on earth, I invite you for all you’ve done, my treat…
-
Unbelievable. Maybe DiBenedeto should sue C. Campbell. I’m not sure what for, but I’m so ticked off about this whole thing. Clutterbuck gets off free and clear ( and un-injured) for a nastier and obviously pre-meditated cheap shot. The arbitrary and seemingly random decisions by Colin Campbell give the NHL a worse reputation than anything Gillies ever did.
-
Gillies did what he was supposed to do. Where’s the head hit?
-
I don’t have a clue what Gillies deserves.
Everything is so arbitrary. Briere two hands Frans over the head; Steckel cheap shots Crosby to the head; Stepan cheap shots Green to the head; Joe Thornton head shot to Perron; Shea Weber hits Sobotka with an elbow to the head; Cooke cheap shots Yandle to the head; Lucic sticks Moore to head.. and on and on. Some penalized. Some suspended. Some ignored completely.
Whether Trevor Gillies is a good player or not, should not be relevant in handing down his suspension.
-
Joke as usual. The No-Hit-League is at it again. The replay from the back shows no part of Gillies striking the head. The replay from the front shows the left hand coming up from a low position as Gillies hits Clutterbuck, as if the momentum carried the left up after the right stopped on C’buck’s left arm/shoulder, and maybe scraping against the face. Any of the media who made the statement that it was a hit from behind needs to have their eyes examined or maybe should watch the replay to begin with. It was a replay of a hit that happens any number of times during any game played on any night of the week. The fact that it was Gillies, fresh off a suspension, and right after a penalized hit from behind, it was deemed “retalitory” by the refs (BS imo). Memo was probably sent down for the refs to watch for anything done by Gillies that night. Campbell really does need to go because of his inability to remain objective and consistent with his penalties. How did the Bruins-Montreal game not have any suspensions come from it, have it called old-time hockey and be okay with the media when there were several altercations that were initiated against known non-combatants, who were then mercilessly pounded until officials were able to step in? Colly must be really proud of the job that his son did that night!
-
Both hits were borderline: but if you suspend one, you must also suspend the other. the N.H.L. would not need players like Gillies if they dished out punishment in a formal, fair way, instead of going by the jersey a player is wearing! Half the Islander players were out of action because so many liberties were taken with them and allowed to go on. Refs pushing our players. Total disrespect by the butt kissing media, who just seem to repeat each other. That’s why we need Gillies. When the N.H.L. stops playing favorites, and protects all its players, then we wouldn’t need him. (except in the locker room)!
-
actually, im suprised. suprised that the team didnt get fined $200,000.00 for failing to control their player. sarcasm, my gift to the NHL.
as writtten many times, discipline is all over the map. CC played 14+ minutes last night, theres no injury to amp up the punishment. theres no standards for punishment, no guidelines, and despite a hit resulted in no injury, no sense.
gillies is a marginal player at best, but the guy has lost 20% of his income. thats gotta hurt. i dont see how he can continue to earn a living playing this game. guys who do worse, and inflict far greater injuries, suffer lesser punishments.(show me Tangredi, and i’ll give you Savard)
not a big loss to the team, but crushing loss to the man. unfair… -
I guess we now know where the front office stands when it comes to Gillies.
This would be a good time for Snow to put the video crew to work, and get some of the highlights of headshots to islanders players that went penalized.
Next season is going to be rough on this young team when Gillies is gone and Konopka is gone. Wonder how much fear Haley and Martin will strike in an opponent?
-
I am a long time Islander fan and while watching the replay many time, you can see the puck was away from the play. Clearly an illegal hit. If you think it is a shoulder hit then you need to see the hit from the opposite side. His hands and elbow were up near his head. And right after being suspended he goes out and does this. Islanders should release him.
-
Garth, do you know the meaning of team? You should have accompanied Gillies, and to hell with the photo for another time. Stand up for them and react to the NHL already, rather than cower in silence.
-
Well based on the subplot, I think wang has had enough of him. Something tells me he will be waived…
-
no fricking way did that hit warrent 10 games no way!!!!!
-
Say what you want about Gillies being a goon but that hit did not deserve a suspension whatsoever. I understand he is under the microscope but that was a man sticking up for his teamate and he barely hit him. 2 or 3 games max would of been sufficient 10 games is ridiculous and is unfair to a man barely making the league minimum.

There are trying to make an example of Trevor. Not really fair, but we paid the devil for our 4 cups. This is our life now as an Islanders fan.I TOTALLY AGREE..I WAS JUST SAYING THE SAME THING TO MY FRIENDS

Honestly, Gilles just sits in the forefront at the moment. He’s being used as a lame duck, being made an example of. Problem is, post-salary cap era the NHL has taken a huge dive in officiating, physicality, and respect. People have lost interest. Unfair and inconsistent penelties and suspensions have been give. Teams are being treated differently then others. It’s actually quite terrible. It’s important that the NHL gets their rules in order and becomes more consistent. More guys in the future will become a Gillies and more GM’s will start to argue for their players. Forget about Colin Campbell hating on the Islanders. It’s more then that. This is a league wide issue. Anyone remember David Booth getting knocked out. Or Marc Savard and Matt Cooke. More of this will happen. I say keep the tough guys in the lineup. If we see Tavares or Okposo go down by a league wide clutterbuck hit, then what goes around comes around.
-
#8 you say Gillies doesnt bring anything to the table it seems to me i( dont watch every game but most)that JT is not getting run as much this year why is that?Gillies may need to be more careful but he brings a needed element.Lucic cross checks moore in the head but he plays for a team that Campbell never lost a cup to or coached in the same div a prob holds no gruge against so he will get nothing this is why non hockey fans hate the game.I hope Snow and Wang will voice their displeasure to the nhl about the unfair distribution of suspensions.
-
MilDEW going off on the Isles and Gillies? Hey MilDEW aren’t you the CLOWN that went into the stands to hit a fan with a shoe? By the way NOBODY cares what you think about hockey you where the WORST GM in the history of pro sports! Here’s an idea go crawl back into that hole you came out of and GO AWAY!
-
The NHL is embarressed that they have a team run by a cheapskate owner, that is the joke of the league, the league wishes it had a different owner. Wang is a joke to everyone in NHL. Its simply a known fact. This is the price they pay for that.
-
Bull dinky. there was nothing dirty about that hit, no intent to injure. Campbell is just a bitter jerk. If I was Gillies, I would have needed all my self control and then some not to show him what a REAL hit to the head is.
-
The inconsistency is what bothers me the most. That hit is clearly not worth a 10-game suspension. It was the 2nd worst hit of the 2-second time period in which it occurred. The fact that Clutterbuck’s hit was not looked at while Gillies got 10 games is a travesty in my opinion.
-
Gillies IS being targeted.I don’t think because he’s an Isle but rather his talent level, icetime to PM ratio.I do not think that hit deserved ANY suspension. It was not dirty. As for the intent to injure what about FIGHTING?????I love the fights but only when they’re part of the game(see Pens game) and not staged. If I were Gillies I’d personally sue the NHL for jeopardizing my career the next time 2 guys fight and try to take each others head off or better yet show some other hits to players heads around the league that go unpunished.NHL nowadays is a joke.Their officiating is like the NBA.
-
I watched the replay of the hit many times and really don’t get it.
It was a hit on a player without the puck so it should be a penalty, but a 10 game suspension ??
It wasn’t from behind.
It wasn’t to the head. Gilies didn’t hit him in the head, Cutterbuck hit his head on the plexy as a result of the hit.If Cutterbuck turned around and started fighting with Gilies after the hit, it would have been a 2 and 5 for fighting for both.
Can someone please let me know what I’m missing ??
-
Islanders save train and subway fare by not sending a representative to Gillies hearing. Wang once again sets a precedent.
What does Gillies deserve? If I ever meet him, I’ll shake his hand and buy him a beer.
Free Trevor Gillies!
-
10 might be a little much but I am fine with it… The problem I have is that Clutterbuck doesn’t even get mentioned and he started these string of events with a dirty hit… Just seems to me that the NHL has double standards around every corner. Maybe this is why the NHL is a joke compared to the other major sports.
-
clutterbuck should have been suspended as well 10games is warranted ONLY because Gilles is a repeat offender…..plain and simple
-
The Islanders marketing logo is “we’re all Islanders”..if they were they should have had someone join Gillies at his review..
-
Its time that they take action and APPEAL This Suspension and Call out clueless campbell for the fraud he is… Cooke, a repeat offender left his feet to hit tyutin from behind and only got 4 games (thats intent to inujure)… gillies hits from the SIDE, and gets 10 b/c the hand barely touches his head, and the player wasnt injured and played the entire game starting up crap.. i call BS… to further help the appeal, i call out the fact that 3 years ago, Islander Thomas Pock was suspended 5 games for an elbow to the head on a first time offense, yet when Steve Weiss elbowed Martinek in the head last week, there wasnt 1 word from the league about it..
call out the clown and APPEAL THIS SUSPENSION!
Make the media look like complete tools for being the biased fools they are!
-
You know why it is so easy for Campbell to make an example of Gillies? Mario Lemuix screams like a baby all over the press lying the entire time about the Isles/Pens game to protect his guys and his organzation. Wang says nothing and Snow can only manage a “I’m surprised the other team wasn’t fined”, which is an improvement from when he says nothing. WHat about why Pit didn’t get suspensions? I hate Mario, I hated him as a player because he was dirty, used his stick a ton to people’s faces, knees, groins, back, and head and whined but at least he is proactive and not such an easy mark for a bully like Campbell. Why wouldn’t he mess with the Isles they never opposse him in anyway. Much like their team has been on the ice they are easy to bully. SNow and Wang have for years tried to appease Campbell but not arguing with him and it’s got him no where. When you have a bully like Campbell they only way you stop him is to bully him back. Isles are finally understanding this on the ice but still don’t get it off the ice.
-
I’m not defending the hit, but why can’t the Islanders make a video of the hiys on Tvaares, Commeau, Nielsen, DiBennedetto and ask why the offending players never got any suspension for those actions. I’m sorry to say that punishment is not being served out equally to all players. Certainly Lucic should get suspended for that hit on Moore, did he get called into the NHL office. Certainly theu must start following some kind of guide lines??? Lets see it in writing for the whole NHL fan base to see. JUST BE FAIR IN GIVING PUNISHMENT
-
Barnaby on tsn is a punk, he got religion or something.
-
barnaby, dreger, johnson, and james duthie. Wow! James Duthie is the biggest idiot. He flat out said, why not suspend him for the whole season? He’s a non impact player on a non-playoff team so you can do it without anybody batting an eye, except the islanders. Is this guy serious???? Im speechless that all of these guys have jobs. Atleast Mike Johnson brought some rationality to the segment. And they also proved the point that if it wasnt Trevor Gillies it would be a 1-2 game suspension and Dreger went as far as to say a fine on the low end scale. So Im extremely confused on what kind of message the league is trying to send here. Oh and if you guys havent heard yet, the Islanders are also “enablers”. These guys really need to do their research before they open their mouths. Ive never seen anything like this before where a whole sport singles out one player! It really is unreal
-
10 bit much! Ah Colin Campbell: My favorite memory of you as a player is you falling into the back of the net as Mike Bossy scored his famous midair goal in the 1982 Stanley Cup Finals. Nice defense Colin! Didn’t Colin have Dave Tiger Williams as a teamate? Wait he was a clean player? NOT!
-
I can’t say I’m against it and to be honest we’ll survive without him. He made his impact against the Pens and that will last longer than he will
-
Unfortunately, if they want to save face, Isles should release Gillies.
-
this suspension is almost absurd as using mike milbury’s quotes in their columns. if gillies played his last game as an islander then i wish he would’ve rammed colin cambells head through a wall today. and i don’t want any pissing and moaning from any pansy islander fans when they start getting cheap shotted again next year when there is no one to protect them. use your freakin heads.
-
Hate to say it, but the writing is on the wall. Doesn’t look like Gillies will be back either next year. Without Knopka or Gillies we will be pushed around again, unless Garth signs someone.
CB.. Can’t Gillies appeal the decision?
-
.. Let me get this straight — Mad Mike Milbury who complained about this hit and whined about it got 6 games for going into the stands and beating a fan with a shoe, let me repeat this – Mike “insert a deserving middle name” Milbury got 6 games for ASSAULTING A FAN IN THE STANDS! and this hit gets 10
.. The hit was a roughing penalty at best not 2 long ago and wheres clutterbucks penalty for his hit? Anyone? hellooooooooo???
.. go look at some old hits by Scott Stevens, Richie Pilon, Bryan Marchment go ahead and tell me how could they compete in todays game? geeeez its a joke
-
What Lucic did to Dominic Moore last night was worse than Gillies maneuver. Gillies means well, he just needs to tone it down a notch and maintain some semblance of control. Clutterbuck deserved immediate retribution for his dirty hit on Dibo – too bad it wasn’t delivered by Gillies’ fists while facing Clutterbuck.
-
This is a witch hunt. The league is using Gillies to make it look like it is deterring dirty hits, maeanwhile criminals like Matt Cooke are aloud to roam free. The league believes it is doing a good job when they only attack problems that do not implicate teams they want to highlight. Campbell is completely biased in his decisions and has been historically harsh to the Islanders.
If you watch the hit the elbow was chest high and his fist went into Clutterbuck’s face. If anything it was a skating punch without any real injury. The league blamed the Islanders for premeditated acts, this decision is premeditated and sending the wrong message to the league. The message is do not police the ice and we are in complete control, when we feel like it.
-
Well looks like Gillies will be back for the Boston Game April 6th. He should make a run at Greg Campbell.
-
Ok so we all are for the most part in agreement that the punishment doesn’t fit the crime! But why did no one go with him? That sends a good message to UFA’s! Like we need anymore bad PR. Love to know the whole story, maybe CB will find out more??
-
Its great that the league is doing what it can to protect the players. So when is Clutterbuck meeting with Campbell for that hit from behind? Will it be before or after Lucic’s meeting for cross checking a guy in the head?
-
Gillies was signed to protect his team matesThAts what he did. No injury to Clutterbuck. He is now given a bogus suspension for a clean hit albeit a little late. He should be resigned period.
-
It just didn’t seem that bad to me. With HD and big screen TV I would expect it to be clearer to me. I’m sick of seeing guys in the league hit in the back. That guy certainly deserved some payback. Where can I mail in to help cover the cost of the suspension for him? 10 games just seems excessive.
-
Just reading where the Islanders sent NO ONE with Gillies?!? WTH?!?
Those jokers at Islanders headquarters have done a lot of classless things but wow!
Speechless. -
Gillies has shown some bad judgement. Both the clutterbuck and tangradi hits he got his arms up and hit or appeared to hit the head. Whatever you think of the F#%& up way this league works, to the NHL bureaucracy that’s a clear No No.
As far as intent to injury and “targeting the opponents head”…. during a fight ramming your fist into a persons head, clearly an intent to injury. Fighting is allowed but checking as such is not. Therein lies the problem. Its not the hits themselves but the context of the hit and that’s why punishment (via penalty or suspension) are subjective.
Without clear policy Colon Campbell has a subjective mandate based on opinion of context. This will not deter players and will not prevent injuries.
Its interesting that Colon Campbell even mentioned injury since that is a metric that clearly isn’t used but in reality is the only clear metric there is.
Its kinda sad but the players get it more then the Colon. Case in point Talbot and Phenuf became marked men for the results of their hits and not the adherence to bureaucratic standards
-
Clutterbuck says Gillies “has no business being in the NHL.” Gilles has 2 pts this year. However, Mr. Clutterbuck who plays big minutes had 18 pts in 78 games his first year with Minnesota. I bet if Gillies played his minutes he would pick up 10-15 pts. Regardless, Gillies serves a purpose as an enforcer. The elbow came up but was definitely not intent to injure. But 10 games for the elbow coming up from a side hit?? Gillies is exactly what they need and the other teams and the league are feeling that the Isles should be allowed to get pushed around and should take their medicine as usual. Who the hell does this Gillies guy think he is trying to stick up for his teammates. It’s NOT like Gillies goes out there haphazardly hitting people hard. He’s protecting our players that some of us cherish when they are healthy, such as Tavares and Grabner. The guy fills a role. And is not an inherently cheap player. Real Isanders fans should stick by him as well as Garth. Snow should be calling out Colon for his non-suspension of clutter*uck. CB, where can we send supportive words for Gillies to Isles management, where would be the best contact email or phone#?? Thanks.
-
The Isles need overall team toughness, not a goon who cant play. Most of the Isles “core” wont drop their gloves-ever.
The Isles cup teams didnt need any goons and they were pushed around by no team. -
Let’s see if mario agrees with this one
-
He was certainly “Simon-ized” on this one, CB. I’ve concluded that Campbell does not throw darts at the board as others have suggested. I truly believe he makes an example out of the Islanders organization every chance he gets because they are perceived as weak, consistently at the bottom of the standings, and unable or unwilling to defend themselves.
Gillies did something stupid, but it deserved no more than a double minor. I did not see any contact to the head (maybe I need glasses?) but Clutterbuck seems to have embellished and pretended to be hurt until Gillies was ushered off the ice with the major and game misconduct. He did not miss a shift. Booooooooo Colin Campbell.
-
Why isn’t the NHLPA in on this travesty of justice? I realize Gillies is a fringe player. I don’t defend nor do I agree with most of his actions. But this punishment was undeserved. If you go back and look at the huge disparity in treatment that Colon Cambell has shown towards Islander players, it really a crime. If you look back at all the suspensions given to players over the last 10 seasons and compare the average to what was given to Islanders players, it is a total joke. Consider if you will, the injuries and games lost due to the alleged dirty hits, and you will see that Colon has given Islander players more than twice the amount of games suspended than any other team or player for far less serious hits. It is Colon cambell and Bettman who should be embarrassed here at the silly one sidedness and hypocracy shown to the Islanders. Since 2/11 the NHL’s mouthpeices on NHL on the fly and Versus have spewed inaccuracies left and right about the “premeditated hits” that the dirty Islanders have laid and how embarrassed they should be over this. I will say this again in case you didn’t see the last Gillies hit. There is an orange strip on the Islander jersey at the elbow. The perfect MSG feed view from behind clearly shows 2 things. One is that you can see All (not a little or a part, but all)of the numbers on the back of clutterbuck’s jersey throughout the hit. So how is that a hit from behind? Two, that orange stripe at the elbow of the jersey never (not even a little) comes above the numbers on the shoulder of clutterbuck’s jersey. Clutterbuck’s head never came in contact with the boards. Gillies did however, give what is commonly known as facial with his left hand. The hit was neither from behind nor all that hard. I can only conclude that maybe clutterbuck took a poke in the eye and thats why he stayed down so long. Colon cambell and the league office are clearly the bullies here trying to intimidate the Islanders. And Chris, I don’t understand how you don’t see it that way too.
-
I Ref here on Long Island and although it’s different I can’t line or ref in game’s that my son is involved in But the Colon is allowed to rule in games that his son is involved in, conflict ???? I think so.
-
This was very questionable, I do not agree with (1) that 10 games is reasonable. I didn’t see evidence that he was going for the head. I think Gillies is getting shafted for the Pen’s brawls game + his rep. Lame… does he deserve to be back next year? Hum good Q eh? To me it would seem we only need Gilles or Z, not both. Then again I’m not in the locker room, it get the sense that both these brawlers add alot of presence. IN SNOW I TRUST! IN WANG I TRUST! BRING IT HOME BOYS!
NA NA NANANA LIFE IS LIFE!!!! NA NA NANANA!!!
-
#124 Exactly. A video should be posted on Youtube showing the Gillies hit juxtaposed with hundreds of dirtier plays that resulted in lesser or no penalty at all. This league is a joke. colon is a loser and disgrace to the campbell name.
-
Dumbell strikes again!! Gillies get 5 games for the hit and an additional 5 games for being an Islander!!. Clutterbuck receives the Oscar for his dive and 0 games. Thats ok The Isles play the Wild next season, we will right this wrong then.
-
i do feel sorry for gillies. he was only trying to protect his teamate. cambell, the former rag that he is hates the isles and will always come down hard on the isles and not on the other team when there is a incidence like this and as in the past. this low life cambell shouldnt even be handing out punishments just based on the illegal actions he did when he tried to protect his son who plays with boston. any other respectable man would have given up the position for the integrity of the game. but then i said ” any other respectable man” that certainly leaves out cambell. he is anything but respectable and he has zero integrity.
-
Agree. Colin Cambell is way too inconsistant. I don’t like any head shots at all. they should all be suspended, period. Unfortunately, if you wear an Islander Jersey, you are free rein. Anyone can do anything to you and get away with it. If you are an Islander and even make a gesture to an opposing player, you will be suspended. (see Wiznewski).Who allows this moron, Campbell to keep his job? If anyone wants to help me protest in front of the N.H.L offices, let me know. 10 games for gillies was ridiculous! where is the outrage, Islander fans? I heard them interview Adam Protau on XM radio. He basically dismissed the Isles and said who cares if Gillies gets suspended for the rest of the year! Then they interviewed Jose Theodore, whom we beat 4-1, and he said Gillies should not be playing hockey! Where are the Islander advocates? Good for Gillies for standing up for this team. He sacrificed so much this year and you guys want to throw him under the bus?? Get a life, dudes, this guy never played dirty until he was labeled that way by the great Mario, who was only great when he played with his own body-guards! Once the league stops its blatant discrimination should be the only time we ease up! Go Isles!!
-
So Cammalari does a butcher job on nino’s face, briere tries to decapitate frans, tavares gets cross checked into boards-loses teeth,comeau- concussed…all these little or no suspension. Gillies hit was shown on PTI from a behind angle and was harmless. The only hope is that when people watch the video and realize he got supended for a joke of a hit-there will be an uproar-or there should be-we are the isles and no one likes us. Gonna miss gillies and his intensity/heart
-
i guess collie cant forget the ass whoppin his canucks took by the isles in the stanley cup…instead of everyone bashing him on here whats the ADDRESS where we can write to him and gary bettman and express our frustrations..personanlly i feel gillies hit did not warrent a suspension however he should have known that the league and the refs would b watching him..my problem along with many other posters on here is the lack of suspensions other players are in the league are getting for hits worse than gillies!!!!!
-
Garth should sign Trevor Gillies to a 1 year extension to show the NHL that we won’t be the whipping boys of the team. Also, Cal CLutterbuck is a huge wise a**.
He deserved a hit back. -
Wouldn’t it be a hoot to see TG throw down the gloves with Campbell’s son in that Bruins game at the end of the season? CC would be in a real pickle trying to do anything to Gillies, wouldn’t be too much of a conflict of interest now, would it?
-
Until the league gives automatic 5-game suspensions for checks/hits from behind, I can not condemn Gillies, Chris Simon or any other player for his reaction/reflexion to those plays. If Gillies just started pushing & shroving Clutterbuck, he would have been suspended anyway. Gillies’ hit was not from the rear, but the side and it was shot to the head.
-
The suspension inconsistency bothers me.. makes me laugh though that people on here want to donate money to cover gillies loss. Rediculous idea.
-
Trevor, you didn’t deserve the 10 game suspension. 1-2 games at most and only because you are a repeat/recent offender. I saw a good check on the shoulder with a your left fist up in the face of clutterbuck (sucker punch maybe). I didn’t find the body check that serious…especially since it was clutterbuck…he isn’t a soft, skilled player and you were responding to a hit clutterbuck made. I believe you earned a spot on next year’s team, 4th line, minimal minutes, but you did your job and you did it well. Hats off to you Trevor.
Lots of love,
Sault Ste. Marie, On, Canada.
-
After reading your previously closed post CB, I must say, whats the point? No one has the players back here. The NHLPA apparently has 0 power in these cases. The team has zero power in these cases. I the NHL wants you out, you will be out. First they will try to suspend you out. At the same time having their shills at the microphones spewing venom and disparaging reputations. You’re right whats the point of going to a meeting when minds are already made up. We see it as white, they see the same thing as black and no convincing or compromise will change them. Colon Campbell is an idiot. No changing my mind there. Others might like him. No changing those minds either. No point to it at all.
-
i dont know i have seen some pretty good video of the hit from an ice lvl vid behind Clutterpluck and come away thinking that Gilles arms never really even hit the guy in the head. So if 6’8 Chara throws a check at 5’9 Katic he has to have his hands at his side cause i can only assume that his hands will crush Katics head????? It to me looked like a total acting job to me. NHL blows, just about done with this league. On to lax for me.
-
Colin Campbell – once a Ranger, always a Ranger. (There’s no consistency in his rulings .. except he ALWAYS gives an Islander a STIFFER penalty. Always.
Always.
-
I am as big an Islander fan as any, but, I cannot excuse what Trevor did to Tangradi, and cannot (maybe even more so) excuse this. By no means am I critcizing Trevor Gillies the man, but Trevor Gillies the hockey player does not belong in this league. I mean really, you come back from a 9 game suspension and right away feel like you need to get some justice on a play when a penalty was being called? I realize everything happens in a split second, but just go in and give the guy a big hit. No elbows, no fists–just a bit hit. Later in the game. Not after the whistle. The other night on Versus clips were shown of both Mike Richards and Matt Cooke pullling off big hit opportunities. I know you can make clips look how you want, but certainly he didn’t have to “finish his check”with an elbow. If you can’t make a big hit without an elbow, you don’t belong in THIS league. As long as he remains on the team we will continue to get phantom clipping calls (when is the last time you saw that called?), and 10 minutes misconducts for Konopka, and probably even worse. If we really want to be taken seriously (and the way we’ve played recently shows that we should be)by the officials, the hockey media, and the league (Colin Campbell), we need to cut ties with Trevor at the end of the year.
-
the islanders seem to have thrown gillies overboard, sending him to face the music by himself (if i understand cb’s report correctly).
campbell was licking his chops at this one. he might have liked to come down harder after the pittsburgh game if betteman hadn’t poked his nose over his shoulder.gillies’ hit was ridiculous. i don’t know if ten games are too many for this case, but there isn’t consistency in nhl rulings so it’s hard to gauge.
my only hope now is that some of the heat comes off martin… the pound of flesh has been extracted as revenge for showing up pittsburgh. but somehow i think they still won’t be satisfied.
it’s funny how the islanders supposedly went from ‘softest team in the league,’ to ‘a bunch of goons’ in one single night. heard la greca on radio saying fans don’t want fighting, and the islanders only had 7k at the game even though ‘they fight more than any team in the league.’ a comment that’s factually inaccurate (isles certainly don’t lead league in fights) and overlooks attendance boost for pittsburgh game and those immediately following. the pundits get carried away sometimes. what a surprise…

I think most people are missing the point. I am a big Islanders fan, forget the NHL and Campbell conspiracy theories. Gilles was returning from a 9 game ban, in his third shift he does something borderline – of course he will be given a longer suspension. The guy is 32 and never played in the NHL for a reason, please cut ties with him ASAP. At least Haley looks like he is aware of how to play the game – has anybody seen Gilles do anything skilled? He deserved 15 games for being an idiot.
-
lets be honest he cannot play the game and is a goon for hire, its not his fault if anyone should be blamed look at snow for giving him a roster spot. trevor would have been fine in the nhl during the early to mid 90′s. there is no place for non skill in this league, if you are a fighter you better be able to play and he can’t.
-
tom d in nj is right, this team needs team toughness, but the cup teams did have clark gillies who at the time was the top heavyweight in the league, team toughness plus a heavyweight will get this team goung foward..also get rid of these sissy fans who have no use for trevor go watch tennis b****es
-
its funny how you guys think 10 games is too much. it has to be more than 9 because he is a repeat offender and it happened his first game back. he acted like my 4 yr old and what do you do with them put them in a longer time out. duh!!!!! winning!!
-
Hmm and why is Gillie’s second offence more severe than cooke’s 132nd?
-
@157, gillies was NOT a repeat offender going by CBA rule. he is NOW (unjustly), but was NOT before.
-
.. Like i said before Mike Milbury got 6 games for going into the stands, 6 whole games and this ’2 min penalty’ gets 10 games, WOW just WOW
.. Gillies should realize to be real carefull and on his toes (I understand this 2 a point) but cmon he simply checked a guy who did a academy award acting job (clutterbuck) and then clutterbucks ‘remarks’ about the hit were disgracefull and low, he badmouthed a fellowplayer to the lowest level, ive never seen it that bad, Clutterbuck is a punk whiney crybaby, plaind simple. Dont worry hockey players have long memories
.. BTW where is the NHLPA on this? hellooooo?? Where is the NY Isles mgt? hellllo?? I cannot believe how the NHLPA allows suspensions for 1 ‘type’ player and suspensions to another ‘type’ player. ALLLL based on how Colin inept Campbell is feeling that day! What a limpwristed union, cmon guys this is a travesty!
-
Yes the suspension is way longer than expected however a team photo took priority over a player? Maybe this is a sign gilles is done in the eyes of management, however if so it sends a bad message to players. If you make a mistake, bad decision or whatever, you are on your own. I don’t like that one bit.
-
anyone who can not see the benefit of increased toughness with this squad should go watch basketball. Trever’s suspension is accessive and biased. CLuttebuck’s hit had just as much potential to injure as Gillies. I know Gillies is a goon. But a goon this team has needed.
-
Hey cb-not trying to tell you how to run this forum, but if there was any comments to monitor and not let be posted it should be for all the people saying Gillies is a joke and should not be in the NHL. These people do not get it. This is way more about Gillies and a borderline incident. Hey you people should Cooke be in the league. The isles are screwed time after time.you as a fan should stand up for a guy like Gillies-or you like being doormatts?
-
Colin Campbell’s a joke. For the integrity of the league they need to codify what actions get what kinds of suspensions and take he stupid arbitrariness out of the suspensions. This is ridiculous.
Regardless of what Gillies did (I’m not defending it, he got his hand up and hit the head), but the simple fact that Campbell pulls this stuff out of his butt means it creates an air of uncertainty and, at a minimum, perceptions of inequality among the players themselves in terms of what gets punished and what doesn’t. Fix this or the chaos on the ice will continue.
-
JOKE!!! Clutterbuck NOTHING cause is was on DiBenedetto , and Gillies hit , hate him or not , was to the shoulder NOWHERE near the head!! Watch the video in slow mo. Looks worse at full speed. Rules should be the same for EVERYONE!! Just goes to show the ongoing hatred of the Isles by Colin! How about an appeal ??
-
There is no way to really defend Gillies hit, it was a hit to the head…and he skated a distance to hit Clutterbuck. The suspension had to be upgraded.
Gillies should be signed for Bridgeport next year, not the Islanders…just bring him up for a few games a season, when needed….2-way deal
-
For all you fans turning your back you shouldn’t even call yourself fans. Gillies stuck up for his teammate and that is more than I can say for most of these other guys. We should get a team that just stands around as our guys get sent flying head first into the boards. These people who think he doesn t belong on the team have obviously never played a team sport after 3rd grade and don t get that a team that won t stickup for each other will never go far. Go watch spring training you marys.
-
Love the way milbury rants that Gilles should be or of hockey. Imagine the charged levied against a player, who say crawled into the stands and beat a unsuspecting fan with their own shoe? Someone should stop drinking from that big tall glass of delusion.
-
This all comes back to WANG! The NHL doesn’t respect him, this is why we are treated the way we are. Imagine we had a reputable owner (lemuix like) things would be different. SNOW doesn’t help the cause either
-
sorry for second post..but garth go represent your player for gods sake-trust me a photo shoot of team, we don’t need it -i am trying to forget about this year as quickly as possible-i dont need a photo
-
@ 158 that is exactly the point i am making, this “ugly” (and i use that term very loosely to the point of it being sarcastic) hit makes him a repeat offender for the first time yet others, like matt cooke can offend many times and recieve less punishment. if the nhl wanted to make a statement, they should tack on more games right now to every person that has broke this rule this season and not just make an example out of one player just because he is not as established as other nhl vets who do make violent and offencive hits, gillies in my opinion should have only been penalized for interfearace as clutterbuck didnt have the puck, so much for hard checks in the new nhl
-
While I can’t condone what Gillies did, and I think the 10 games is reasonable given his past, I do wonder why Clutterbuck gets nothing for an equally illegal hit. Also wonder if this were Pronger, Byfuglien et al if the punishment would be as swift and severe.
Finally, the genius Milbury has some nerve sticking his two cents in. Maybe he couldn’t find a shoe to beat a fan with. -
Toughness???? Gillies is a joke to the organization. the reason for the 10 is he didn’t learn from the first one which was one game ago! how effective is he if he sits 9 plays 1 sits 10 etc. send him down and leave him there. Hasn’t touched the puck in 20 games what a joke.
-
Watched a little of the Pus/Devs game last night and saw 2 clear hits from behind(clearly knocking head into glass) in a row by Pitt player on a Devs player.Would anyone like to guess the outcome?Nothing, zero, zilch!!!Not even an on ice penalty!!If I’m Gillies I call my union rep w/ video tape of these hits and make Colin sweat bullets!!Gillies isn’t ruining the game, just Colin.I can tell you I have lost a lot of respect for a lot of former players,Gm’s,coaches who have decided to jump on the bash Gillies bandwagon and yes that includes JAFFE!!!Go Isles and Gillies.Oh and 1 more thing….MEMO TO ISLES MANAGEMENT….Stand by Trevor like he has you and your players!!!

10 games is fair.
Trevor (at this point) does not belong in the NHL. He should not be part of the Islanders next season.
