CAROLINA 4 ISLANDERS 2
Plus: Personal thoughts on the NHL Awards issue
Please join the Interactive Plus/Minus after the Islanders’ 4-2 loss to Carolina tonight at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Plus: The Hurricanes, playing for their playoff lives, deserve a lot of credit for an inspired comeback in the third period. The final 20 minutes were a clinic in true determination by a team when it counts most.
Minus: There goes any chance of the Islanders getting more games on HD next season.
Plus: This might be a very important result on the night of the NHL Draft Lottery.
Minus: The Islanders showed nothing in the third period. Delayed post-Rangers game hangover?
Plus: All tickets were distributed, resulting in an announced sellout.
Minus: Not nearly all tickets were used. But that’s okay. The fans responded well over the last two months, and this game had little meaning. The old barn will be more full on Friday.
Plus: In the final ten days of the NHL season, Jesse Joenssu has picked up his game and given Islanders management something to think about. He is a very restricted free agent.
Plus: The first period goals were scored by Jesse Joensuu and Jussi Jokinen. Yust a coincidence.
Minus: The Islanders’ power play has been brutal over the last two weeks.
Plus: The bomb of a hit by Kyle Okposo on Chad LaRose as the latter attempted to drive to the net. Attempted.
Plus: John Tavares scored his 28th goal of the season. During an intermission interview, Tavares said he prioritized getting P. A. Parenteau his 20th before scoring his own 30th. Smart, caring young man.
Plus: Mark Katic should have played it safer in the final minute on the power play with the goalie pulled, but he has been good. The coaches developing him are a big reason why.
Plus: Jack Hillen is having a strong final quarter of the season.
Plus: Ty Wishart…not too shabby.
Plus: Organizational depth on defense (with Calvin de Haan, Matt Donovan and maybe Blake Kessel and Tony DeHart also coming)? Unthinkable!
Minus: After the Penguins’ encore on Friday, it will be a long six months before the next important game.
Plus: For Islanders fans, the wait should be worth it.

On the PHWA Dispute: Until now, I have not responded on Twitter or anywhere else about the issue regarding the Professional Hockey Writers Association, the NHL and the Islanders. But I do feel an obligation to the good people following Point Blank for the last three years, so in response to several emails and Twitter posts, here is what I can share on the record.
So that there is 100% certainty, understand this: I was not, in any way, behind the movement by the local chapters of the PHWA to protest the Islanders’ decision to ban me by not participating in the balloting for the Hart, Norris, Calder, Lady Byng and Selke awards. I also did not participate in any of the voting by the three chapters. I was aware of the New York chapter’s decision because they first voted on it three months ago before confirming its vote this week. I learned of the actions of the Long Island and New Jersey chapters around the same time most of you did.
While I appreciate and respect what the writers have done, you need to know that their protest is not about the person, but about the principle. Even my own relatives know that I’m not worth it. The PHWA is taking a stand for its rights and for future members. The organization has almost no avenues in which to protest. Since the Islanders are only covered daily by one newspaper, a “media blackout” (as suggested by many) was never an option. Blog posts by Andrew Gross (Rangers writer) and Tom Gulitti (Devils) of the Bergen Record shed light on their thinking.
There was no process with my ban. I’m told that some NHL executives lobbied the Islanders to reconsider their position immediately in the aftermath of their decision in November. Otherwise, there were no all-inclusive meetings, no explanations. There has been little activity, except for some attempts to throw dirt on me with a few off-the-record accusations. While this saddens me, that’s life. As for the Islanders’ attempt to blame the LI-NY-NJ writers for “hurting” Michael Grabner, a player highly respected by reporters covering all 30 teams…well, I respect public relations. The statement was certainly a creative way of trying to ignore the notion that with actions come consequences.
Word has it that the NHL may get involved on Monday. The Islanders, as is their absolute right, are entrenched in their position. Although it was a difficult time and I believe Garth Snow and the Islanders have treated me unfairly in this instance, I viewed their ban as a harsh reality months ago and started to move on. The issue raised its head this week because ballots were distributed.
The PHWA has many reasons and every right to fight for its principles. If all parties come together in a fair matter, there is no reason for anyone to be impacted negatively by this. I know how honored the writers are to participate in voting for the NHL awards. The writers that have relinquished the privilege have not done so lightly.
As strange as this may sound, I am on the sidelines in this dispute. There appears to be nothing I can do, and so far no one with the NHL or the Islanders has contacted me. I continue to hope that something is worked out so everyone can proceed cordially and professionally.
Your Plus/Minus and Comments on this and tonight’s game are encouraged in this thread.

Plus: Weight looked good behind the bench.
-
Plus – Fairly good effort by the Isles against a Club that had a heck of alot more on the line tonight.
Plus: Let the Rangers sweat.
Plus: Chris, wasn’t sure that you would touch the issue related to the PHWA vote tonight. Very much appreciated your statement which continues to reflect your total professionalism and class. While you say that the writers stance was more about principle than the person, I do not totally agree. Sometimes people do the right thing for good guys who deserve such respect.I would have done the same and I know that Isles fans continue to stand behind you and hope that Snow and Wang will one day again show you the same respect that you have shown us all season. -
I applaud the PHWA for taking a stand. It’s unfortunate that the end result affects the players more than the franchise but it’s important to show a united front. Shame on the New York Islanders for poorly handling the situation from the beginning.
-
This game was lost in the 2nd when they had all those chances and didnt convert. I hate seeing them lose, but strangely tonight I’m not upset because I know that it screw the Rags.
Grabner looked tired and missed Neilsen, who should sit out the rest of the year.
Nice hit KO
JT, you are a man
Jesse Joenessu, would have been nice to see what you’ve done the last 2 games in previous stints.
Why, oh WHYYYYYYYY couldn’t Martin bury that chance?
Katic….nevermind, you’re young
Can’t wait till next season
-
Have to think Katic is becoming a great depth guy. Great skater, involved in the play, backchecks and honestly can’t blame him for that empty net goal. The puck bounced on him 3 times before it got to him. It happens. Isles didn’t have that same determination tonight like they did against the Rangers. They were making that “extra pass” and not getting to those loose pucks. Reminded me a bit of a sunday morning mens league skate. Either way, I’m more excited to gain more ground on that draft lottery position then a meaningless win against Carolina. Oh by the way, why no DP tonight. Had plenty of time to rest that knee in between games…..maybe it’s still swollen? Obviously Montoya’s start against the Rangers was more personal then planned.
-
Chris, you want to talk about poor customer service, I have 3 seats since 1995, I did not get me invoice, I have asked 3 different people in the Islander organization to look into it and get it for me. Tonight I once again asked about my invoice and was blown away with the response, it was WE WILL GET TO IT WHEN WE GET TO IT. You think I am now going to renew, NOT A CHANCE!!!! They are to arrogant for their own good. They need my money, THEY TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS LIKE DIRT!!! NO MORE NO MORE RENEW FOR ME.
-
question: for a good hockey team, would a win against the big rival cover up four losses in the last five games (three of those at home)?
my personal answer: no way.
but it seems like a win against the rangers is worth eight points…
on the whole cb issue, i see no reason why islanders management shouldn’t take the high road and let everything start from a clean slate.
-
As long as it hurts the Rangers im all for it. The Islanders are going to need someone to golf with.
-
Great to hear jiggs tonight… Wish the mets played all year round.
-
Can Ward had to stand on his head early, I wish they could of got another goal when they were buzzing.
+ the islanders can really learn from this loss
- Frans getting the Nystrom trophy in street clothesChris, I hope for better days when everyone gets along, its a great game and the team has been so much fun lately. Hopefully more “normal” days are ahead. As always we all enjoy ipb and deeply appreciate your hard work and admiration of the Islanders.
-
Count me as one of those people with tickets but couldn’t make it. I overslept. It’s a shame we couldn’t help out those dear sweet wonderful Rangers fans who are crying because Capuano dared to put his goons on the ice late in thegame. Not because Gaborik unnecessarily injured Neilsen, we all knew the former Ranger coach wouldn’t discipline that.
If it was DiPietro who blew the third period lead, what we this board look like? I said and still do that Montoya should start. But in fairness, you have to wonder if DP blew a third period lead.
-
Mark Katic will be the next Amac. Just wait.
-
plus- the noose is now tighter on the rags. plus- good for the draft. minus- p.p. very bad lately.
minus- all of the nhl knows how arrogant and self serving wang and snow are. wang and snow saying this hurts grabner shows their true colors of arragance and self serving delusional ways of doing things. The truth is wang and snow continue to embarrass themselves and the franchise and hurt the chances of free agents wanting to come here because of their delusional and crazy ways of how they do things and say things, but then that could be just another way for them to continue their cheap ways, knowing the way they treat people, makes players not want to come here. -
I have been an islanders fan from the start on 72. In the last few years when they have been the hapless isles again, you were the one voice supporting and promoting them. When someone is doing that if you want them to be honest then sometimes you have to accept the negative. The Isles were never able to do that. It’s a shame that you can act more professionally then the Islanders. I applaud you for taking the high road in this situation and let the Islanders act like the bully on the school yard.
-
Plus: Okposo’s hit.
Plus: JJ
Plus: JT
Plus: There were points when the Isles were dominant.
Minus: Isles simply stopped playing.
Minus: The Botta ban and the fallout from such is just idiotic. This is an issue of a team creating a problem where there is not one.
Minus: Colin Campbell & the NHL again showing the truth is they care nothing about player safety, head injuries or hits to the head. If they did Gaborik and Federtenko would have been suspended.
Plus: The Isles lost and that hurts the Rags and helps Isles draft position. Isles could easily get the 2nd or 3rd pick.
Only other game I really care if they win is the Pit game.
-
PLUS: Finally, someone is standing up for you. You are an incredible person and do so much for this organization. I really hope the Isles reconsider and see how much you do for them.
-
As much as I like Radek, his defensive play is suffering lately. I also feel Hamonic is by far our best defenseman. If he is playing this well now. How much better will he be when he is older? We may not be making the playoffs, but we’re heading in the right direction.
-
CB thanks for everything you do for all us fans of the Islanders. It is truly amazing that even with the ban, you are still THE “go to guy” when it comes to the Islanders. Katie Strang does the best she can, but let’s face it, the Cablevision-owned Newsday”s coverage of the Islanders is shameful,, and it is non-existent after that. I am a supporter of Garth and Charles, but not in this matter. They are not only disrespecting you and disregarding the professional, fair and overwhelmingly positive reporting of the team, they are also disregarding the fans. By doing so, they are also doing the Islanders a huge disservice. How they cannot see the nose on their face is disturbing and just plain foolish. Maybe they will come to their senses for everyone’s sake.
-
Best loss of the season, the last two games we hurt the Rangers big time. How ironic.
-
what a nice move by the writers…maybe with Grabner losing votes and basically any shot at the trophy, The Islanders & NHL will grow up and be professional…and just make peace. This should have been taken care of months ago.
-
Honestly, the Devil & Rangers PHWA have nothing to lose by making this stand. No one they cover is going to nominated for any of these awards. If the Boston writers and Vancouver writers get involved, as you’ve hinted, than something good might happen. But what is going to be Garth’s response to any question you ask? Good luck because we want this sight to continue and develop with that insider information we crave.
-
Cam ward, three posts, and a desperate hockey team were the difference tonight. A win win for isles fans if they won great, if they loose its one step closer to screwing the rangers playoff chances. Mostly a good effort, but would like to see the boys close out a few more games in the third.
-
The isles need to learn how to win with people in the coliseum. Other then the ranger game it seems like they always lose when there is a big crowd.
Not sure why the isles turned it down in the 3rd. They needed to play the same style as the 2nd period.
- More hit posts
- The team looks very different with frans out of the line up.
-JJ only playing well now. Why not earlier in the year?
- PA got cheating in the defensive zone which is why corvo was so open.
- PP continues to be awful. The team is so much better 5 on 5 or shorthanded. They really need to work on it. It is too predictible and the players dont move while on it.
- KO still makes bad blind passes and poor shot selections. Seems like most of shots get blocked and go the opposite way.
+ KO’s hit. That was very solid hit. He needs to do that more often!!!
+ Starting to see some good depth. Perhaps we can package and upgrade for a game changer dman? weber? I can dream. -
Behind you Chris 100%. the organization’s treatment of you has not gone unnoticed in the Country and I refuse to pay $ to the team directly until your ban is lifted. The next Isles ticket rep that calls me will be in for some good ranting and raving. Best of luck and keep up the amazing work.
Side note, pissed Florida and Ottawa lost.
-
As encouraged as I have been by the team’s play the second half of the season, this whole continuing saga with CB only reaffirms my belief that our sophmoric organization will only screw it up in the long run. I am a long time fan who doesn’t live on the Island and depend on Chris for coverage and to see this happen for THIS LONG is ridiculous.
-
Katic and Reese had a very solid game. Grabner looked like he was doing the 3am feedings each of the last two nights and what a difference with no Nielsen. Al gives up so many rebounds the score probably could have been 7-2. Doug Weight did look good behind the bench and you can tell the players looked to him for advice, nice to see. Despite our “improvement” at least based on the season ticket renewal letter, we are under .500 at home and with Jack and that is not good. Carolina provided a good lesson to learn from in how to become a playoff team, hope they make it.
-
Garth Snow and Isles’ management have been donkeys on this one, and the statement on the website only adds on to the pile of their petty, narcissistic, poorly-thought-out decisions.
For all of the strides and the good moves they’ve made this season–winning back a chunk of the fan base with a combination of youthful energy, winning, and toughness–this is still a black eye they refuse to acknowledge.
And at the end of the day, it may in fact cost Grabner a Calder, Nielsen a Selke, (Lundqvist a Vezina and Lemaire an Adams), and I’d hope they’d look in the mirror and realize they did it to themselves, but based on their stance they chose to repeat today, I doubt it.
The pen still remains mightier than the sword, Garth. Party on!
-
Ugh. Why must the Isles continue to be amateur hour in their professional dealings with the media when the product on the ice is getting so exciting to watch?
Tonight, I saw a team that played with a team with a hell of a lot more on the line. A 2-man advantage, down by one, we would have gotten the equalizer if the puck didn’t take a 45-hopper to Katic at the blue line.
+ Katic – that kid can skate!
+ Martin – would have loved to see him bury that gimme, but hell, I’m starting to love this guy’s game.
+ Fans – You know the season’s over. But I don’t care if it was a sellout or not, I really enjoy when the Coliseum is packed and full of kids. When this team turns the corner – hopefully, likely next season – those kids will form the base of a huge swell of new fans that will pack the place for years to come. -
Plus: Incredible coverage by Chris Botta all season, particularly in the face of unforeseen (and incredibly unfair) adversity. Thanks again Botts – only a matter of time before management has to cave.
-
Although I agree that Botta should not have ever had his credentials taken from him, I do wish the PHWA would do their jobs and actually vote for the awards. They are getting tons of press on the issue now, which was the point of the boycott (a good thing), so why not give their votes and get even more national attention for the story? Keep up the good work chris.
-
#10- The Mets fans wish that the Mets would play, period.
-
I notice that all the DP haters didn’t say a word about the poor play of Montoya tonight…or how the goalie needs to make a big save in that situation to steal a game…no, only DP they blame for every problem with this team…
-
I know this has nothing to do with tonight’s game, but speaking of depth, Nino leads the WHL in playoff scoring with 10 points in 4 games! After a dominating regular season. I think we’ve got another real deal player in this guy, by that I mean better than we’re all expecting. Full playoff highlights on the WinterHawks web page.
-
I was at the game tonight because I signed up for season tickets next season. A rep called me and offered 2 free tickets to tonights game.
So, explain to me how an organization who wants fans back so badly, can treat the only real coverage the get so poorly?
Katie Strang tries, but Newsday sucks. The Islanders only come into play when they need filler material. Other than that they have no use for the Island’s only professional team.I don’t always agree with you, Chris, but in this matter, Garth Snow is acting like a two year old who is holding his breath until he gets his way. Absolutely childish.
And Wang is no better. The buck stops with him. I don’t want to hear the excuse that he lets Snow make the decisions. Bullspit. Ultimately, he is the boss.
Both men should grow up. The Islanders will never be treated like a top shelf franchise, or taken seriously, until they start acting like one.
Good for the PHWA.
-
Guess Jesse Joensuu realized he is a free agent this summer. Time to show why he should be resigned.
Looking forward to the draft.
-
plus how many young kids where at the game.even though the cheering was very high pitched.was good to see.
-
in a year with more than its share of bad losses, the worst one of all may have been the dec11 game against the thrashers. so what happens the next time atlanta is in town? another flat and uninspired effort. no sign of ‘payback.’
a couple of weeks ago in carolina the islanders get steamrolled in the 3rd period. so what happens next time they play carolina? the islanders stop playing in the 3rd period. no sign of correcting the mistake.
this is not the stuff of a good team. or, frankly, of a top coach.
btw, when i saw weight behind the bench the other night, i couldn’t help thinking that somebody, somewhere, once said something about the islanders being run like a ‘mom and pop’ shop…
maybe a third party could help, low key and behind the scenes, to end the unpleasant cb exile. -
Over the course of this difficult year we have watched our players mature. I guess we are going to have to wait at least 1 more year for the organization to so do also.
CB you are a true professional and have done more for this organization then many who are receiving a paycheck from them. Thanks for all your hard work over the years.
-
The story of this game was the goaltenders , AM kept the Isles in the game while the team couldn’t get it past Ward, you can’t fault Montoya for the goals he gave up; now on the other hand, if DP was in there,…………
-
Class you are Chris
Your site continues to grow for more
than one reason. -
Free botta. The issue is chuck and Garth have no pr person to guide them in rectifying this amateur situation. This is what happens when you cut every corner possible to save money. You take grabner out of equation Garth is a terrible gm, what else has he done? Wake up you idiots making us look like more of a circus than we already are. Can we ban you two for dp franchise crippling contract? Witt? Hunter? Still paying bates and yashin.
-
I realize Coach C. isn’t *bothered* by P.A.’s coughing-up the puck and blind- “Hey, we’re playing loose and fun…it’s pond hockey…!” -type passes but the Isles need to sign someone for the A-line in the off-season. Period.
FREE CHRIS BOTTA!
Wang’s dubious fortune $ was acquired using extremely nefarious if not criminal methods. This is an undeniable fact. And although it’s absolutely disgusting witnessing his and Snow’s oppressive behaviours, I’m not surprised.
We all now live in a world where Corporations have complete reign over Government and Media and Wang’s arrogance and close-mind is sadly par-for-the-course. Meanwhile, Snow, who has done a decent job as GM but who apparently has sold his soul, is standing on third base looking around smiling, acting like he hit a triple.
Real leaders accept criticism they don’t try to silence.
I absolutely applaud the Writer’s Protest and I urge Snow, who obviously has Wang’s ear, to stop compromising his humanity, and restore CB’s credentials! -
Chris-I’m not sure where the HD comment from you stems from , please share.
I ponied up to get HD receivers in the fall. The only nyi HD games that seem to get aired on the canadian version of Center Ice are from the opposition feed (last night it was Canes feed ).So I’d say out of 82 isles games , half were on HD c-ice via opposing teams feed , other half I had to watch on the standard definition center ice channels (like looking through pop bottles compared to HD)
is is a MSG issue where there not willing to share their HD feed with center ice ?
-
This is good for the draft and bad for the Rangers, I’ll take it. One thing dawned on me last night about the Jankowski firing. I hope Wang didn’t do it thinking, well why pay someone to draft future prospects that will ripen possibly when he does not own the team any more, why invest in someone elses future- I don’t know I am always the conspiracy theory type and don’t trust Wang anymore. Where is this whole arena thing going???
-
Here’s a lesson in customer service:
Out of state fan calling the ticket hotline from the website because the site is down.
Fan: I’m coming from PA with my daughter for tonight’s game and can’t seem to purchase seemingly available seats.
Agent: Just come to the box office.
Fan: I do not want to take a 3 hour car ride without tickets. Can you help me out?
Agent: I said go to the box office. There will be cheap, upper level seats available.
Fan: I don’t mind the cheap seats but I would feel better knowing that I had tickets in hand prior to embarking on a 3 hour car trip.
Agent: Hey pal, maybe you should stay home and watch the game on TV?
Fan: Maybe you should be a little more accommodating to your dwindling fan base?
Agent: “Click.”
-
You have got to be kidding my PAISLES! Who the skunk are they hiring? That is rediculous! I am in cust svc and would lose my job if I was like that. We must at least show some empathy if we can’t help someone.
-
Looked at tonight’s game as a win-win situation. If the Isles won, great! If they lost, it hurts the Rags and improves our draft position. But team is forming nice chemistry and looking forward to 11-12
-
Great point by CB pointing out the Isles young D’ Depth(even T.DeHart is leading the OHL in DMan Playoff Scoring) The Isles needed to lose this game for the Draft Lottery. The Isles now should be almost guaranteed on of the 5 spots in the Lottery for the #1 pick. I looked at the Tiebreaker scenarios and if for example the Isles are tied w/ Florida or Ottawa, the Isles will get the better draft pick. So the Isles could still get the 3rd overall pick(w/out winning the Draft Lottery)! We had a stretch of 45 games where we were one of the 5 best teams in the NHL and now we are still going to get either Nugent-Hopkins, Couturier, Larsson, Landeskog, Ryan Strome or Jonathan Huberdeau. Not a bad year at all.
-
.. If there is such a thing as a “good loss” this was it both for the lottery and hurting the Rag$
.. The barn was pretty loud last night (even with a dead 3rd period by the Isles) but the Colisuem has had some good ‘energy’ in the past 6 weeks or so, hope it continues
.. CB i applaud your stance and profesionalism throughout the whole debacle and hope things get corrected over the summer – please guys lets all be adults and address what needs to be addressed ASAP
.. When is someone going to wake up in the Isles front office? SERIOUSLY WHEN? They are so clueless on how to promote the team in *any fashion* u cant find this franchise anywhere on the NY media scene, (except the memorable, Pitt fight game) even with the improved play they are not around — wake up Garth and Wang and find some credible and good people to get the word out on this young exciting upcoming team! SERIOUSLY WAKE UP!GEEEEEEZ :-0
-
I find it amazing that while the Isles have 543 man-games lost, the ‘Canes have only 61!!! Makes you think.
-
Unless the players have incentive clauses for these awards, it does not hurt them. I am glad that the PHWA are taking a stand. This should not have reached to this point, but the matter did not get resolved. What the Islanders are trying to do is censorship! I do not understand the Isles’ position in the matter (regarding CB’s ban), but across the hockey world, their action(s) is being seen as petty, juvenile, and bullying. I dropped cable before the season, the newspaper coverage is very lacking, so this blog is the source for Islander News! Shame on the NHL for not nipping this in the bud months ago!!
-
We are in America CB, not China. Perhaps Garth and Charles are confused. To ban media because they do not agree with the message is simply un-American.
-
Bob Bassen #43… Thank u for realizing how bad of a player parenteau is… yea he will score the occasional goal, but his passes are terrible and hes ALWAYS turning the puck over in all areas of the game… what was he thinking when he was moving the puck past OUR blueline and drop passing it to NO ONE, causing a turnover and a potential goal where Al saved his ass… he is NOT a 1st line player and they definitely need someone else to play on that line with JT and Moulson… Yesterdays lose was disappointing but in the end is good for their draft position… 1 more lose (hopefully not to pittsburgh) gives us a guaranteed lottery pick
-
@33, thank you!!! I’m so tired of the DP bashing! Montoya messed up, admit it. You all are crazy to jump all over rick.
@ Chris, this DP bashing has to stop, please make a video or something to like explain to fans how unintelligent they sound when they talk about Rick DiPietro
-
The sad thing in all of this is, taking CB out of it as he requests, is that the NHL and the Islanders were one of the first of the major sports to embrace the Internet and new media, and now pulled this.
I understand on the surface the Islanders are going to say its “just a blogger” but that is like saying ESPN is “just a website”. This is not some guy in a basement with 10 readers, it is the primary vehicle for Islanders news
-
Wang and Snow are trying to control the media like a bunch of commie dictators. What bothers me most is that even before CBs ban or Jaffe’s firing this team probably faced the least amount of media scrutiny than any other professional sports team out there. Freedom of press is an important part of American culture and is important in sports just as it is in politics. They need to learn to deal with it.
-
Look, if anyone has been a Islander fan since Wang showed up, they would understand why Botta has been silenced. Remember wang once announced to a fan making complaints at a islander fan even at the Coliseum “Sit down and shut up!”. Rich people live in there own world, surrounded by rich people, they consider “us” as pesents. They laugh at us as they give us a last place team decade after decade and we keep comming back for more. Megamillionairs are full of themselve. Also if Botta was as cute and young and Kevin Connelly or Rick Dipietro, I get the feeling Wang would be more open to him being around the team…just saying..
-
+ Organizational D-man depth.
- None of the prospects have the needed size
and/or physicality in their game.
+ Looks as if we’ll be no worse than the 5
seed for the draft lottery.
- The Russian billionaire Nets owner is not a
hockey guy! -
In a strange way, the Isles allowed you to take PB to the next level. The video segments are great, as are the varieties of guests that appear with you. Your partnership with Brian Compton has led to a weekly segment that we all look forward too. PB has improved since the “ban”. I don’t think you’ve missed a beat. Thanks for all you do. PB continues to be the #1 source for Islanders information. Better than Newsday. Better than islanders.com. Keep up the great work.
-
Chris you are a true gentlemen. I just hope this doesn’t hurt Grabner for the Calder. On another subject, it seems the only way to get equal justice in the NHL with hits like Gaborik’s would be to to an NHL Redlight(Penalty) Camera System. Nassau County could benefit from the fines.
-
That Katic kid is gonna be a good player. I am aghast at the Islanders treatment of Chris Botta. Islander country suffers and its a loss for the fans. Can we say that the Islanders dont care about there fans? It sure the hell looks like it.
-
Still believe the Isles “accomplishments” since December cannot be taking to seriously. Talk to me when they are winning and the games actually mean something.
-
Minus: Every goalie in the NHL seems to save have their best games for us, ie Cam Ward. He saved the Cane’s bacon in every game we played them.
Minus: Goaltending and injuries are the reason this team did not make the playoffs.
Plus: Whoever we get in the top 6 will be a very good player for us immediately or within a couple of years.
Plus: This team play like a TEAM with various lineups due to injuries throughout the year.
Plus: Keep Katic, dump Bruno!
Plus: The “A” on Tavares’ sweater!!
Plus: The last 50 games of the year the NYI were in the top 15 in the NHL.
Plus: The never quit attitude of a very young bunch of kids who play for each other.
-
CB, what is the deal with Trent Hunter? Will he be back next year? I think a healthy Hunter would fit in well with this group. His size and grit could help on the third or fourth line.
-
This all seems dd but then I remembered that even on IslanderMania, they stopped having customer service respond to questions because they were getting non-softball, real issues.
I shudder to think how Wang and Snow would operate if they had to deal with the hockey press a team like the Flyers do.
-
#44 The HD issue is not an Islanders issue, it is a Dolan/MSG/Cablevision issue, Every Islander game is broadcast in HD for Cablevision viewers only. They do it to try and force people to leave FIOS/directTV and any other providers.
-
The Isles put in a good effort tonight. Sometimes, you just lose and that’s that.
-
Plus: Ty Wishart starting to use his big body and long reach to his advantage. Also skates well for a guy with his size. Really solid depth defensemen for next year if we keep him
-
We’re with you, CB. The writers are doing the right thing by you, and we appreciate it.

Chris,
any chance fanhouse can host the kyle okposo hit as a short video clip… nhl.co,m, game highlights have zero hits for this game showing…
-
What this Organization is attempting to do to you is deplorable and vindictive,Chris. My question is what the heck are they trying to vindicate? You have created the only source of life and info for the diehard, displaying nothing other than an undying love for the Franchise yourself. There seemingly is a collective neurosis within the Organization which isn’t healthy.
Perhaps being unable or unwilling to create a connect between themselves and the fan in the effective manner you have has embarrassed them? Whatever the case, don’t relent! Keep this wonderful blog going along with the videos. You are probably the primary reason there is still a solid fanbase, yet they continue to fight you. How pathetically stupid and counterproductive can a group be? -
Thought hit on LaRose was a cheap shot, and I wish I had a better feeling on de Haan. Lucky if he’s another Campoli, in my humble opinion.
-
I am not heartbroken about the loss. Did not get to see the 3rd period though. I think the team as a whole and the depth of the team is much better then it has been in quite a while. Another top 5 pick in this seasons draft and the potential addition of Nino and De Haan to this roster. I am not even going to get into the potential FA or possible trade (everyone thinks garth is not smart enough and Wang is to cheap to pay someone anyway).
This is a big offseason. All the young players need to continue to get stronger, stay healthy.
Is Capt Jack the right coach moving forward?
The goalie situation. Have Montoya, DP and his health and wildcard with the russian no show (what do you do there).
Streit (what a difference he would have made overall and the pp)and the rest of the defense needs to stay out of the surgical hospital -
If Konopka, a man that has missed ZERO games this year, is not signed, then I will not watch this team anymore. Garth and Co., at some point, need to appease the will of the fans.
-
Great point on Katic – I think he’s going to develop into something pretty special.
I’m going to have to check the tape for KO’s hit – nice to see him using his body.
Joensuu has been playing better lately, but I question how much he can keep it up. I don’t see him as an every day player. I’d love to see it all click for him since he’s a big body and smooth skater, but I think the team has better options.
This situation with the NHL awards voting is really a disappointment. I feel bad for Grabs and Fransy. But I still religiously check and follow this site and I still feel it was treated so unfairly. I think the statement the PHWA is making is a bold but neccessary one. I do hope the NHL steps in and finds a way to resolve this.
-
Just a few thoughts..
-I like Dibenidetto over Joensuu any day of the week. I like Dibo-he kind of plays with an edge, got under some skin. Joensuu will definitely not keep this type of play up.
-Like Katic/Wishart over Gervais(sorry for stating the obvious) but hey -the management has gotten it wrong before -
@ Orange and Blue……Hunter plays with grit???? really?
-
There honestly wasn’t a better site out there when you were able to do what you did, CB. We know you’re modest, but we can tell you the truth, you are worth the trouble. I hope these clueless people in charge of this organization come to their senses and apologize to YOU and the fans.
Watching Tavares evolve into the player he was this year has made me unbelievably happy. What a transformation from last year
-
It’s kind of like when your girlfriend and best friend don’t get along, what do you do? I do think Garth should meet with you CB, work it all out and let’s move on to next season in a positive way. Garth, you are earning Isles fans respect with your rebuild, now be a man and make peace with CB, this is getting stupid.
-
More than hurting the Rags, I’d rather us get a top five pick /chance to win lottery.
And I’d like to see our team management grow up and act like professionals. This is America. Land of Free Speech, Mr Wang. Opinions are like a**holes….everyone’s got one. I personally don’t think the “Mom & Pop” comments CB had made were so out of line. Certainly Larry Brooks writes far worse things about the strangers. And Garth, if you REALLY wanted to “stick-it” to CB, why don’t you get the franchise turned around FIRST, thus proving CB/The world wrong, THEN pull his credentials for the home games of the Stanley Cup Finals. A far stronger message/punishment if his words really hurt you so…
PS, Whoever asked about Trent Hunter….I always liked him but I think a buyout is on the horizon. $2Mil/yr for a guy who missed about 150 games in 2 years and whose hands have turned to cement is not a good ROI. Matt martin will take over the lead in Hits and probably score 10-15 goals next year, without missing the season with injury(s).

#44 Less games in HD next season because the Islanders didn’t help out the Rangers in the playoff race!
-
i’m afraid the position of the writers about the voting doesn’t help. the last thing that’s needed on this mess is more of a spotlight. the islanders already have answered with a petulant ‘what do we care?’ because in such a public showdown they’ll just harden their stance.
cb, if it were me i might consider asking the writers to go ahead and vote. after all, they might be pursuing a queston of principle, but you’re the guy caught in the crossfire, so you should have a say.
that might cool things a bit, give you the high ground in this latest little twist, and maybe help thaw tings out.it seems to me you’ve been in ‘purgatory’ all these months by continuing to provide what, after all, is a valuable service to the team (sometimes you’re even too generous in your opinions) at no cost to them. that should have helped them get over whatever ‘hurt’ you had caused them.
(btwn you and me, when i see doug weight from one game to the next pop up behind the bench, and i’d bet my two cents it wasn’t capuano’s idea, i think ‘mom and pop.’ i mean, can you see something like that on babcock’s watch in detroit?)
-
glad they took a stand for ya cb wish the national organization should actually take the lead

HD unfortunately doesn’t matter to me since the selfish dolans won’t release the HD to Verizon at any price! So roughly half the fan base won’t get Isles in HD anyway. Our number is zero games in HD in any case. The only HD Islanders games we will get will be on Versus or if NBC ( from this page to God’s computer screen) decides to air a non “chosen golden child” NHL backed team.
-
I’m surprised the ban on Botta has lasted this long. You would have thought reason would have prevailed, but guess not.
In any event, although I would miss the only great outlet of Islanders coverage, I wouldn’t blame Chris if he changed the name of the blog to NHL Point Blank next season. Why continue to promote a team if it treats you like dirt? I appreciate that he’s a lifelong Islander fan and fellow die-hard, but if a team is trying to interfere with your livelihood then that team may no longer be worth supporting.
-
Good news is Verizon won the first round of court with the ruling the Cablevision must release the HD feed to Verizon. Cablevision is appealing though so it could be a while before we see anything. On the positive side as well, Verizon has reserved channels for MSG HD so it should be implemented fast once they get it.

I am truly offended by the actions of the writers. While I totally agree that the actions of the Islanders against you, pulling your blog was beyond acceptable, the voting is about the players, not the organization. Grab’s and Nielsen didn’t play on a high flying team this year, yet their numbers and sensational hockey presence was high flying and deserves the support, and votes of every writer. Boycotting that is the travesty. If the writers want to smack the team, refuse to write about them, refuse to report on them, but to in any way hurt the chances of these 2 rockets of hockey, that my friends is beyond sophomoric.

CB,
The strength in your site is talking to your connections. The interviews with scouts, coaches and analysts sets you apart from others. Isles fans (now) want to see what the best prospect they should get for this most important upcoming draft. Your analysis on that is superior as you were a PR guy for the Isles for 17 years? You have been around draft war rooms. Talk about that. Your credentials are pulled…so what..that does not stop this site from being a stong force in NY media. Do what your good at and let the credentials work itself out. But do not sacrifice game analysis just b/c you were not in the press box. If you consider yourself a “good hockey” guy you can certainly analyze the game from watching it on a TV. Maybe not as well but not significantly bad. You will get your credentials back but the most important issue is keeping this young, budding, exciting team here on Long Island. They will be a force to come with this slow and steady rebuild. I cannot wait for Nino next year and the potential of a lottery pick to add to this mix. Garth has done a great job. You have done a great job as well. The fans deserve this excitement and coverage. Let’s not diminish that.

Grabner has no chance in winning Calder and Nielson has no chance in winning Selke, so it doesn’t really matter.
the writers just did the right thing by showing the solidarity with their colleague. -
It is really upsetting to me that the G.M. of my beloved Islanders can be so small minded. I have always respected his patience with this team. given the lighthouse snub by T.O.H, Garth has done a good job assembling what is starting to look like a solid team going forward. Bravo, Garth!…But I wonder if Garth realizes that through all the hardships, injuries, firing of well respected individuals, minor league quality hockey, and everything else we, the diehard fans had to endure, we probably would have lost interest since the coverage of the Islanders was so pathetically minimal. Chris Botta was and still is an advocate of this team. The most passionate fans are the ones in point blank. I think the Islanders are seriously under valuing C.B., and all the good he does for the team, and the fans. I have read every post since it started, and I cannot ever think of a time when C.B. said anything that would alienate management so much. This is like starting a big fight with a family member! Does Garth realize how much of a black-eye this is to the organization, disrespecting the reporter that truly loves this team, and its most loyal fans hungry for any good Isles news. If Chris said something that really upset Garth, he should have talked to him about it. I am sure C.B., being the professional he is, would welcome the conversation and not repeat the “unknown verbiage” that upset Garth so much. I remember during the losing streak when Howie Rose thought his mike was off, on national T.V said he could care less about the Islanders and what they are losing by (accompanied by a chuckle).I could not believe that was allowed to slide by! It was an outrage to the team and the loyal fans who lost their hair watching those games, but were still loyal. And Chris is not allowed near the games??? Note to Garth: We love this team, and if not for Mr Botta, we as fans have often felt frustrated and hurt at your lack of communication and questionable firings, to quit on this team. Chris always gave us hope, Now it’s your turn, Garth. Do the right thing for everyone that loves the Islanders.

Offended by the actions of the writers, bhockey? As a working sportswriter outside the NYC area, I’m truly offended by the demand that they should feel obligated to vote for players on the team they cover, instead of using their professional, objective judgment to choose the best candidate for the award.
The Islanders’ statement reads like jilted high school parents complaining about their kids being left off the local newspaper’s all-star team: “You’re going to cost my kid a scholarship!” But then, I’d expect nothing else from an organization which has already proven its capacity for petty, vindictive decisions.
Much respect to the NYI/NYR/NJD chapters for standing on principle.
-
I like this Katic kid – He reminds me of Andy McDonald – he could make it tough for the coaches next season in camp.
-
Happy to see the PHWA take a stand. I was worried that they would let the issue slide. Hopefully the Islanders come to their senses and let you back in! The team is only hurting themselves.
If anyone else is interested, I think we should call the team today and put some pressure on them to re-instate Chris. Let them know the fan-base still cares.
-
It seems to me that Botts has shown the same stocism and restraint throughout this crisis as many of the athletes he reports on. Contrast that with sloppy Howie Rose who pined away for spring training off-mic when the going got tough. If I had my livliehood threatened the way Chris has, I’d have had a panic attack, but Chris pressed onward and found new angles to report on the Islanders’ long-awaited resurgence. I can’t understand how Garth cannot respect that. Something just doesn’t add up. Who do you want to report on this franchise? Guys like Billy Jaffe and Chris Botta… or a goofus baseball fan who rather be somewhere else. Sorry Howie, but you’re no Jiggs.
-
It’s quite obvious by the splash page on the Islander web site that Streit will be named captain next year with Okposo and Tavares as alternates. As for the PHWA dispute, It’s Charles Wang and Garth Snow they’re dealing with. A waste of time and votes IMHO.
-
Holy hell. The Isles statement in response to the boycott was incredible. First, let’s simplify it because they must believe Isles fans are morons – “unhappy with the Isles barring a blogger.” “Unhappy” is not the term I’d use. I’d use words like “embarrassed” or “disheartened” or “disenfranchised” with the actions taken by the organization. And Chris Botta is no blogger, and literally everyone around the league knows it.
Then, they go on to say how Grabs and Frans will be hurt by this. You’re damned right they will. But the Isles won’t just step up and apologize for their petty and pathetic decision, or even say that CB has been punished enough, the barring served its purpose, etc. No, they’d never do that. Rather, they send the blame over to the writers.
It’s just disgusting. I try so hard sometimes to see the Isles as a public trust that is ours, and Wang and Snow are simply temporary management of it. I would love to know what percentage reading that statement actually supported it, rather than regurgitating their lunch onto their keyboard.
-
It’s not much of a “stand” with only the 3 NY chapters not voting…it should be all the chapters to make them take notice.

Plus: The Canes 2 points hurt the Rangers more than a win would’ve helped us.
