The ex-Isles draft pick coached Cizikas with Team Canada and the Mississauga-St. Michael’s Majors, who are in the OHL’s East final. The Majors will be in the Memorial Cup as the host team. After the season, the Islanders will sign the third-line prospect by the June 1 deadline. Comments on Casey Cizikas are invited in this thread.

St. Mike’s coach on Cizikas, and NYI memories

Have watched Casey on you tube, and he has 3rd line center written all over him, a reason why I think Josh Bailey could be traded either this or next offseason.
Chris:
Could you please interview the Niagara (OHL) head coach, as 2 of the 5 guys (Ryan Strome, Dougie Hamilton) that have been rumored to be drafted by the Isles at #5 are still playing in the OHL playoffs.

I liked when they took the chance on Cizikas. It’s clearly paid off, and
i think he’s going to be a great all-around center in a few years. -
I don’t know how the development of any of our young kids will turn out, but it sure is nice to have a fairly sizable stable of quality prospects coming through the system. Cizikas is just one of a number of kids who have an encouraging body of work in the juniors. Hope he continues to grow and add something to this organization.

Note to all of the “experts” who have ripped Garth for trading for extra picks in previous drafts….they turn into guys like Cizikas and Petrov….too risky to use a high pick on, but are there for picking in a later round. Oh yeah, we should have taken Filatov!

I’d take Cizikas over Bailey any day. After last years world juniors he’s erased any doubts I had. He’s got Tiger Blood!

I watched the WJC tourny and Cizikas is just what we need on an energy line in the future. He drove Canada’s opponents crazy. Also, this kid is going to be a great on the PK. Reminds me of a young Chris Draper. He also has a good set of hands and great wheels. He will be an Islander in 2 years, hopefully. The only reason this kid wasnt drafted higher was because he accidentally killed a kid as a teen playing rugby. Most teams did not want the press or legal issues surrounding it.

The last two seasons, Cizikas has been +32 and +43. We all know that +/- needs to be looked at in context, but from those numbers and the reports of those who see him play, it certainly looks like Casey is a two-way player that will improve the Islanders in both ends. Casey is 20 and is listed at 6’0″, 185, so hopefully one season in BP will be all he needs to add 5-10 lbs. and show that he is an option for the Islanders.

Bridgeport is going to have a pretty nice looking roster next year. Hopefully they can be successful and bring that winning experience to the Islanders in a couple of years. It is nice to know the organization has a very bright future whether it be through developing these kids, or using some as part of a trade to bring over another key piece to the team. Cannot wait for the draft.

Garth has his faults, but look at the prospect pool now and compare it to what it was when he took over. It’ll be interesting to see what this kid turns into.

Interesting read from CB back in July 2009, just after Casey was drafted, and received his sentence for the rugby incident. One scout said Cizikas had “early second round talent”, and the late, great EJ McGuire said “He has (Patrick) Kane-like skill and size isn’t an issue, but he needs to work on his consistency.”
-
Sounds like a young Michael Peca type player, no complaints here.

Casey did have a great WJ. I was at the game where he got a standing ovation for his work on the PK. Let me say that again, STANDING OVATION FOR HIS WORK ON THE PK. I’ve never seen that before.
I agree with the comments that if he is going to be our 3rd line center in the future that either Bailey or Frans gets moved. Right now an eager GM would jump at the chance to get Bailey because he is still young but Im not sure I’ve given up on him. -
Bailey is a young Tim Connolly type player, got to give him some more time and Nielson is magic right now with Grabner, don’t know if that should be broken up. Stick Casey in between them on the PK.
-
You cannot give up on him yet, JB. But it looks like we have enough prospects coming to bridgeport and some solid line formations in the works for the big club that we can marinate the prospects. We can marinate ala detroit and afford to not bring these guys up immediately or even a year out. That gives us more time, better developed players, and more competition come preseason camp.
The kid looks solid and I am glad we took him when we did.
-
I agree that he’s a Kris Draper-type player based on what I’ve seen. Having said that, I think that he’ll still have to be an Islander based on merit, which is really to saythat’s he’ll have to play so well in Bridgeport that he’ll have to force a player on the current Islander roster to be traded as a means to make room for him.
In the NHL, nothing is more important than depth. So I don’t see Bailey or anyone like him being traded as a means to make room for Cizikas, but that’s not to say Bailey or someone else won’t be traded for some other reason. the Islanders will be good for a long time, and it’s largely because of the their depth.
-
All these prospects …team never improves in the standings…. What gives?
-
Winning, history has to begin in 2008. Don’t go back any further than that, because we were in one quagmire (not the Family Guy character)from 95-2001, and another from 2002-08. You’ll see a big leap next season. The Islanders will be the most improved team in the NHL in 11-12!
-
The standing ovation at the WJC was because he single handled and killed a good 20-25 seconds of power play time on his own by grinding it out along the boards. The kid has heart that is for sure, you cannot coach that, either you have it or you do not!

I’m looking forward to watching him play in Bridgeport next year. We are very deep at center, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out in the next few years
