FIFTH OVERALL PICK IS AVAILABLE
To add quality young vet, NYI will listen to offers

by Chris Botta on June 13th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

(Editor’s Note: A few minutes before the following story was published, Katie Strang of Newsday posted a more thorough piece with quotes from Garth Snow. The timing was purely coincidental, even if it is draft time. You’ll want to check out Katie’s story for on-the-record information).

4:30 pm: For the first time since the Collapse-and-Rebuild began in 2008, the Islanders are dangling their first round draft pick as trade bait. NHL sources have told Point Blank that general manager Garth Snow will listen to offers for the fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft.

The team is determined to upgrade the current roster in order to make next year’s playoffs. Snow, chief deputy Doug Weight and owner Charles Wang have prioritized adding at least one productive and experienced forward capable of shifting the slow and steady rebuild into overdrive. If the right player is made available, the Islanders will not hesitate to relinquish their rights to draft a talented 18-year-old prospect on the draft floor in Minnesota on Friday night, June 24.

Flyers center/right wing Jeff Carter fits the profile in terms of age (26) and ability (he has averaged 38 goals over the last 3 seasons). However, his salary ($5.2 million cap hit), DiPietrovian term (he is signed for the next 11 years) and temperament (sometimes pouty) should rule him out. Carter does not seem like a player willing to be part of a struggling franchise’s solution.

There will, however, be other players available. The Islanders have said it’s a challenge getting Grade A unrestricted free agents to take their money. Therefore, trading for an established and accomplished player makes a lot of sense.

The Islanders are unwilling to trade any of their top prospects. Their young players failing to play well consistently currently have little trade value. The fifth overall pick, in a draft with a strong top ten featuring a balance of gifted forwards and defensemen, has immense value.

Cap-strapped NHL teams will be able to make their best offer, as long as their GMs do not demand the Islanders give up a No. 5 pick strictly for salary cap relief or overpaid players past their prime. If any teams are willing to offer equal value, the Islanders are listening.

Point Blank Take: Despite the Islanders’ best intentions to move up the pace of the rebuild (and spend more money) this summer, it will be a challenge for Snow to find a dance partner willing to pay a fair price for the fifth overall pick. There’s always the chance of Snow moving down in the first round for a lower pick and a key veteran. But in the most likely scenario, the Islanders will step up to the podium after the New Jersey Devils make their selection at 4 and take the player highest on their board.

As we wrote on June 5:

The NHL scouting combine over, look for the Islanders to have meetings between now and the draft with the following top-10 draft prospects, among others: Jonathan Huberdeau (gone before 5), Gabriel Landeskog (same), Adam Larsson (maybe not), Ryan Strome, Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Murphy, Sean Couturier, Sven Bartschi and – per the AP – Mika Zibanejad.

For the Islanders to forfeit their chance to take one player from this impressive group, the trade acquisition had better be something special. Snow is smart to dangle the pick, but it’s a long shot that he’ll find what he’s looking for prior to the first round of the draft. He’ll probably have to reel in the big fish another day.

Bailey and a #2 for TJ Oshie…..sounds like St Louis and Oshie way have Issues….He has been injured so maybe his value is not as high…..but the St Louis team (for Sale) could extend Bailey for less money and possibly less years than Oshie.

  2. avatar JimfromStJames says:

Um, I hope he speaks to Lou in NJ.
They a ripe for a re-set with Marty being almost out.

    CB, dare we Dream?

  3. avatar Jack says:

Aside from the Flyers and Chicago, who is up against the cap that can trade a top flight player? Chicago really has no one and if it’s true what you say about Carter, he won’t be coming. Trading down is stupid unless you don’t go that far down. Philly will have to deal someone though if they want to sign Briz.

  4. avatar Scott B says:

what type are some players that would be equal value to the pick? Not saying to start a rumor, just I’m not sure the value of it. Could Semin be one?

  5. avatar admin says:

You do not trade the 5th overall pick for an enigmatic, doesn’t-play-with-a-hangnail Alex Semin, who can be UFA in a year…CB

  6. avatar gary91922 says:

I still say that you call up Florida and ask what it will take to get the #3 without giving up #5.

Landeskog is worth it… btw.. the deal is contingent on Ladeskog being available at the #3

    Couple of possibilities:
1 – Okposo – Combine the grit, skill and low cap hit, it would take much more for Fla to give him up. We are already overloaded at RW.

2 – Cizikis, DeHaan and Comeau – tough for Florida to say no to that.. throw in a 2nd or 3rd rounder for good measure

It doesn’t hrt to call, it doesn’t hurt to make Fla an offer they cant refuse…

    Imagine a line of Landeskog-Tavares-Nino..

Hands down the best young line in the NHL…

  7. avatar admin says:

Oh boy, the trade proposals got creative and dream-like within 3 minutes. Enjoy…CB

  8. avatar Jack says:

    @gary91922

    ARE YOU NUTS!?!?!?!?!??!

  9. avatar Andy Facini says:

    5th for Parise.

  10. avatar gary91922 says:

    CB.. sorry for post #2..

Snow has to get creative and upgrade this team. Torrey ad the guts to trade Howatt and Harris. Snow has to stick his neck out there and make a move.. Picking #5, claiming that no one will sign here and doing nothing is the easy way out

  11. avatar Brian says:

Would love to get a hammer for the backline. Any chance we can pry a Jack Johnson off the Kings for Bailey, the #5 overall, and a later round pick?

  12. avatar corey says:

Please dont trade for Carter. taking an 11 year contract would be crazy. I would hope that Snow would keep the 5th pick and take Hamilton because he is a player that this organization needs. There are plenty of great young players available this year so why not just keep the pick?

  13. avatar Hollywood says:

Good move by Garth. Not a surprise but now it’s out there. I believe Hossa would make sense and Chicago might be looking to give him away. Yes he has a long contract but I believe it was front loaded. No way a team will give us a very good young player for the pick alone.

  14. avatar Ted S says:

We’ve never been able to predict what Garth & Co. are thinking he holds things way close to the vest. Especially this time of year. Sit back & enjoy the show folk’s, Vote Yes on 8/1. Were all Islanders (for now!)

  15. avatar Cold Spring Harbor says:

Just improve the team and make the play offs, it has been a long time. Anything that keeps the team from being a softee push over is fine with me, so bring back Gillies, Haley and Z but not the goal song. Trading down is ok, the 5th pick isn’t about to see the NHL or Long Island for about three ot four years anyway.

  16. avatar vrinqueens says:

#5 pick with Moulson to Columbus for Nash.

  17. avatar admin says:

Still waiting for a trade offer that would not get one or the other GM fired if he accepted it…CB

  18. avatar ss says:

I can’t see how any one player that might be available for the 5th pick could be worth it to the Isles to trade a cornerstone talent like Hamilton or Courturier (the two guys I would love to see in NYI unis).

The Isles are much more than one player away unless that player is someone like Malkin or Crosby who could not be had for the #5 pick or anything else the Isles could offer with it.

  19. avatar SCLI says:

All I can say is. Let the wheeling and dealing begin. This is gonna be fun. I’m so glad Snow realizes he’s in the drivers seat. What happens now is anyone’s guess. All depends on circumstance. Who needs what. Whos willing to dance and whos not. I confident that what ever does happen we will benefit greatly.

  20. avatar ghost of milbury says:

Wow. Reading these trade proposals and what people are willing to give up makes me think you’re all Mike Milbury posting under fake names….

  21. avatar joseph penny says:

agree with #9 we take parise and through in Nabokov for being a good sport.

  22. avatar 93 Miracle says:

KEEP THE PICK! We are going to get someone good with the 5th overall pick. Of course you listen to offers though. Im sure they lisnted in previous years. It was just 3 years ago that they traded back twice so its not like this is crazy news.

  23. avatar Wang's World says:

CB any idea’s for which players might be available in a trade for the #5 pick?

  24. avatar Oye Comeau Va says:

Sounds like Garth has more of a chance of trading down than trading the 5th overall pick for an established NHL player. Regardless, can’t wait for next Friday.

  25. avatar walsh says:

You’re not getting Parise for the 5th overall pick. You’re not getting Parise for the 5th overall pick plus Okposo. Get real.

  26. avatar Daryl says:

Stastny in Colorado for the 5th?

  27. avatar bergie says:

When CB wrote about failing young players having no value, he was being kind and leaving Josh Bailey out of it. He has no value right now, so please stop including him in deal proposals like he does.

  28. avatar DocDuke says:

Snow can’t trade this pick for a current player. There isn’t anyone available, unless he throws in someone on the current roster, or is willing to accept a usefull, older player straight up for the pick. I think Snow should draft whom he believes is the best player, and begin the tweaking next year. At that point, with all the excess of young talent, he’ll have no choice.

  29. avatar Al says:

I need one top 6 F and one top 4 D. For the 5th pick, give me Hartnell and Matt Carle, plus the Flyers’ next 2 first round picks. Holmgren gets cap relief, we make the playoffs this year and for years to come.

  30. avatar Strummer's Army says:

WOW! After reading these trade proposals it is clear the Brian Compton is not the only one who drinks a little. Geez during the day ya’ll? All I can say is any of these trade offers would be immediatley accepted by the other team because they are robbing you blind.

Botta is right it has to be a very special young player and there are not many of them. The only guy I can think of is Shea Weber and doubt he is being dealt.

Also, why are the Isles so concerned with forward they are loaded. Nino is JT’s wing. I think that is what they think we need a vet to play with JT but Nino will do the job very well. Logjam at forward where in a year or two they will be forced to traded some good young forwards because they have too many quality NHL forwards.

Defense is where the help is needed. I would not trade the 5th overall for Parise because he is coming off a major injury. That should be the other rule, no trading for guys coming off major injuries.

  31. avatar HubieMac39 says:

FLA had issues coming to contract terms with Erik Gudbranson (#3 overall) last season. Is it reasoanble to suggest sending the #5 pick for him (and perhaps a amother FLA pick)?

  32. avatar Darren says:

Everyone who follows this team knows this story. Garth lets everyone know he’s trying hard to make the team better and Wang is willing to spend money. Then he does nothing but use his first round pick, promote another teenager (Nino) and sign Joel Ward. Maybe he adds this year’s version of Wisniewski, who sucked and brought back a late 2nd round pick. Then we don’t make the playoffs, Snow blames the building and gets Deb Placey and Butch to talk about how incredible our future is.

  33. avatar Jeff from Smithtown says:

Please no to Carter. Does Wang learn from Yashin and DP contracts.
Let Philly get out of their Cap mess on their own. What we need is a first rate Goalie.
Montoya is a good back up. DP was never good and is toast.

  34. avatar chyzowski says:

I’d blame you for teasing us CB but Snow did it himself in the Newsday article. He’s not going to do anything big but he will make excuses for why he did not. He’ll talk about how everyone wants out kids, like he was presiding over a future dynasty.

  35. avatar Jzimm says:

#5. a fifth round, and Bailey for Kane, Toews. It makes perfect sense if you think about it 12 dimensionally.

  36. avatar nhl80 says:

Make the 5th pick on Friday night and go home.

  37. avatar kabbage19 says:

How about the Isles give the #5 to San Jose for the #28, #59,and Devon Setoguchi. The Sharks may like to use the #5 to take Hamilton to pair with his brother Freddie who they just signed. Setoguchi gives the Isles a 24 year old winger that can step right into the lineup and score 25 -30 goals a year. Garth still has flexibility to trade up from the #28 he got from San Jose with the three second round picks he now has.

  38. avatar eric says:

Best part of the Newsday article was when Snow bristled at the suggestion he has a smaller scouting staff because he fired Jankowski. I’ve heard from a close friend in the NHL that the Isles spend far less on scouting with travel and personnel than any team in the league. Snow has a lot of scouts but they only work weekends (because they have regular jobs) and the Islanders pay them less than minimum wage.

  39. avatar Mario says:

I see a lot of my fellow fans over-paying for average players and under-paying for great players. That’s what happens when the trade rumors start.

  40. avatar JT says:

Keep the pick and continue to add top-5 talent. With a little luck, this will be the last one for a long time.

  41. i can’t read this stuff. sorry isles fans…
some of it is just too preposterous…

i DO NOT want jeff carter. i don’t like the fit. i say we stick with the #5…i don’t see the parise-level players being available.

  42. avatar Steven K says:

Snow won’t do anything. After starting the fire himself in the Newsday article, he lowers expectations by saying that 95% of the time nothing happens. When it comes to trade talks and big UFA signings, with Snow 99.9% of the time nothing happens. All talk.

  43. avatar Brian G says:

NO Carter please – he is overrated.

I cannot think of anyone the Isles can pry away from another team.

Maybe a Trade up would be good – Get Landeskog….

  44. avatar MH says:

Since they missed on Skinner, who would get 40 goals a year playing with Tavares, the Isles are probably afraid of getting this pick wrong.

  45. avatar DPS says:

Take Couturier, Strome or Larsson if he slips. That’s all.

  46. avatar Bruce says:

Isles can’t lose no matter what they do with the pick.

  47. avatar Tom from PA says:

    In Garth I Trust

  48. avatar Lance says:

Hartnell, Carle and 2 future first rounders for the 5 is the most reasonable suggestion so far.

  49. avatar Dan C. says:

#29 HubieMac39 is the only reasonable deal
here aside from CB’s initial Jeff Carter deal.

    #30 Darren is pretty spot-on.

#11 Absolutely not. The Kings are trying to win right now and that’s the complete opposite of what they are looking to do.

In general, why are so many people on this board fixated on Parise and the notion that the Isles have a real chance of getting him? The most likely scenario for the Isles to get Parise is for someone to invent a time machine and set the controls for June 2003.

  50. avatar jisles says:

I believe we should stay the course: keep the pick, move up not down. Teams don’t trade away great players very often (a few exceptions, of course), they draft them. Any player that the NYI could receive, you’d have to ask: why did their ex-team let them go? It’s best to draft our own talent. When teams make the type of deals that involve big pieces, one team usually loses the deal; we could win, but it’s not worth the risk, especially when we’re on the right path, finally. Just my opinion, however.

  51. avatar Hud says:

Sign Jagr, draft Hamilton or Larsson, see ya in trading camp.

  52. avatar Jim M says:

Stay the course and keep the pick. Patrick Sharp is a UFA next summer and will be 30 years old. Chicago will not be able to sign him as he will be looking to a big pay raise from 3.9million. This should be Garth’s major target next summer, or this summer pending a trade and contract extension?

  53. avatar Steve says:

I could see Garth trading down and drafting Sven Bartschi and acquiring another pick in the process. Maybe Nabakov gets moved in another deal for a pick but I don’t see anything major happening. I seriously doubt Garth wants to give up on any of his prospects yet and these vets that are available are way overpriced. San Jose is up against the cap so why not go the RFA route with Devin Setoguchi. The compensation for him won’t cost as much as Parise would and you would get a scoring winger for JT.

  54. avatar Andy says:

The reason 5th for Parise might work is because L.L. (and the rest of everyone, for that matter) clearly sees that this RFA business won’t go well this summer, and he’ll walk out as an UFA next summer. No guarantees for the Devils vs. selecting 4th and 5th overall this year. Gotta be something you consider.

  55. avatar jisles says:

Trade offer: NYI sends, #5, 47, 64 to Florida for #3, and 93. If Florida believes their guy is still their at #5, it’s a possibility. Thoughts?

  56. avatar Joe says:

Devils are forcing Paraise in Arbitration so that will not be an option, next yr he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Trade the pick for a 30+ goal scorer. Make sure he is a good fit with Taveras, Vinny Lecav, or St.Louis?

  57. avatar Alex says:

The risk of losing out on a player who could be better than all that have been suggested is just too much for me to give up. Yes, they could end up busting, but I’ll take that risk. I’d rather groom a big, young, well rounded D man than take something another team is willing to part with. I want to the player everyone else wants to get their hands on… not the one that everyone is questioning if it’s ‘worth it’.

  58. Please don’t trade 1st rd pick for Jeff Carter. In fact I am praying we don’t trade the pick at all. Trading for a young vet Leader ALWAYS BACKFIRES! Yashin, Linden, Smyth. Every time the young player we give up becomes just as good a point producer as the vet we got w/in 2 years. We can get Landeskog, Huberdeau or Strome and they will be big time contributer’s w/in 2 years. You know the vet we get won’t want to come here and will be a P.R. nightmare. Plus everybody will count on the new player to carry us. Right now we got a “us against the world” attitude. Everybody on the team loves being here and the rest of the league disrespects us. Why do we always have to cut the rebuilding plan short and try to be ‘respectable’ instead of trying to be GREAT! and Build from Draft. I was so looking forward to this draft, now I’m sick to my stomach w/ this rumor!

  59. avatar Barry R,East Setauket says:

To move up the 3rd pick overall the Isles would have to relinquish a package of their 2nd and 3rd round picks. Getting into the top 3 is difficult but the Isles definitely have enough picks to do it. Is it worth it. We shall see.

I personally believe the days of stock piling picks are over. For that reason alone, trading down makes no sense unless Garth and the scouts are 100% sure they will get their player. That being said, that’s exactly what will happen now that I said it.

I like the idea of trading up. Get one more elite player to add to the mix. Landeskog? Is he worth it? I don’t know, but if he’s similar in talent to Niederreter than trade the picks to do it.

It should be fun to watch what happens.

    Barry

  60. avatar vrinqueens says:

I know CB, getting Nash is wistful thinking on my part but giving them a 30 goal scorer and a Larsson or Landeskog isn’t too crazy considering CLB is paying him $7.8 million a year until 2014, that’s alot of wood.

  61. avatar Michael Pastore says:

If Landeskog is available at the #3 pick the Islanders trade #5 pick, PA Parenteau, and our two 2nd round picks to the Panthers. If Landeskog is not available then take Hamilton with the 5th pick.

  62. avatar Oren says:

How about a sign and trade for Weber?

  63. avatar Hud says:

Training camp, not trading (my bad spelling in post 51) Sorry CB

  64. avatar Rob76 says:

Ill be honest, there is nothing more i would like to do than trade the #5 for a legit established goal scorer. But as much as i have thought about it, there really isn’t one out there that makes sense for us. Ribeiro? Sharp? Jordan Staal, or Malkin? Dont see anything like this happening, i just hope if we draft we take a forward not a d-man.

  65. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Look Phoenix doesn’t have an owner and they need to sign Yandle to big money, likewise Jersey doesnt have cap space and need to sign Parise to big money. The 5 pick should be in play for one of them. Not for the streeky Jeff Carter. Giving up Bailey is too much for Carter because he doesn’t have the leadership that the Isles so desperately need. Plus strome will be twice the player Carter is. Go get them Garth.

  66. avatar xchfs says:

unless we get RICK NASH,JEFF CARTER EVENGI MALKIN or JORDIN STAAL dont even think about it. Dougie Hamilton is the way the go

  67. avatar Lean Cugine says:

Love the idea of trading the pick but not getting my hopes up.
Also if they are going to trade it, we need a defensmen in return, not a forward. A big, gritty D-man!

  68. avatar sean says:

    Keep the pick Garth!!!

  69. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

the only deal I’d like to see would be the 5th overall pick, plus next year’s first and second round picks to the Preds for the rights to Shea Weber. I would imagine they’d have to offer something like Dehaan, the 5th overall pick and another 1st rounder to get him though.

  70. avatar larry says:

The 5th and Bailey for Spezza

  71. avatar Dan C. says:

Getting Hartnell and Carle from a team desperate to shed salary is really selling the #5 pick short.

Carter for the pick makes some sense. While the length of the deal is ridiculous, it’s also the main reason why the Flyers could possibly trade him for a pick in the first place. And while I normally hate to see a rebuilding team trade such a high pick, I just don’t have any confidence in the Isles’ ability to draft well. They’ve made some very good moves (Streit, Moulson, Grabner) that prove that Snow and Co. can evaluate pro talent but their spending of 1st round picks (other than the JT pick) has been unimpressive to say the least.

  72. avatar streit02 says:

We’ll never get fair value for the pick. In all honesty, why wouldnt Snow listen to offers? This isn’t much news, but sure is fun to discuss. Edmonton is listening to offers for #1 overall. I really can’t even throw a name out there. Iginla? Calgary always shoots down rumors of them trading him, but would he even be worth it at this juncture? He has 3 Iginla type years left in him, tops. Thats not worth a #5 overall pick unless you think your a cup contender. If we want another teams superstar in his prime or close to it, it will take more than the pick to get him and we don’t have anything else to trade.

  73. avatar streit02 says:

BTW, if it were possible to move up and take Landeskog that is the move id be making. Perfect fit and would really round out our whole forward corps. We’d have to get to #2 though because there’s no way Col is passing on him.

  74. avatar Frans Dish says:

Unless you can get Parise signed to a 5 years contract for the #5 pick, Cizikas, and a 3rd rounder I don’t think other people on the trade market are worth a #5 pick(Shea Weber but, that’s not going to happen). This draft is very top heavy with small differences from 2-7 therefore, you take Huberdeau, Larsson,Couturier, or Hamilton. Stay on course and try to add Joel Ward come FA. Let’s Go Islanders!

  75. avatar jamal says:

the only guy that should be traded from the isles is nabokov. keep the young core together. if garth wants to trade the pick for someone thats fine but its not time to send away our good young guys like bailey or comeau, they have talent and they will come along

  76. avatar Petey Pete says:

Rick DiPietro, Bill Muckalt, and the fifth overall for Roberto Luongo and Raffi Torres!

    Get ‘r done, Garth.

  77. avatar GeneF says:

Package Bailey and the 5th. Somebody might bite

  78. avatar Andre says:

It would be stupid to trade down and get another pick. With the 50 limit rule the Islanders have enough prospects they would need to get signed. I would like to either move to 3 and grab Larsson or sit at 5 and pick Hamilton. Trading for an established player is quite unlikely. Carter is intriguing but I want no part of the 11 year contract. To get an impact young player will cost you much more than 5th pick.

  79. avatar DRIVE45 says:

Why would they trade the 5th pick? Listen to offers but don’t do it! We’ll be getting a hell of a prospect. Maybe trade the 2 second rounders to move up into the first. As for Jeff Carter, not only is his contract an albatross, but my best buddy lives down in South Jersey (a big Flyers fan) and has been told by reliable sources (Steve Coates) there’s a lot more baggage to this guy that I don’t think if I wrote here would get published. Don’t even think about Carter!

  80. avatar Staten Islander says:

Please, not Carter with that contract, PLEASE!

Ok, I heard something on XM in the last few days that Edmonton is looking to do the same thing. I’d keep the pick, draft the best player available unless they get approached with a deal for it that doesn’t include giving up part of the core.

  81. avatar Michael says:

The most likely scenario is that the Islanders take the player at #5 overall, and overpay for Brooks Laich July 1st. I’m willing to bet that the Islanders make every effort to bring in this guy. He is exactly what the doctor ordered in terms of experience(both age and Stanley Cup Playoffs) and his pay raise will not price him out of the Islanders desire to sign him. Is there a team crazy enough to offer 4 million per? Sound like a gross overpayment from his 2.5? Well, it’s not like it would hurt us in terms of the Salary Cap, and it would add a productive “veteran” who’s still on the young side that can pot in 30 with these kids and help us battle night in and night out.

Anyways, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

  82. avatar Ray says:

SS # 18 Dito….If its not Nash or Parise just take the player

  83. avatar haleyrules58 says:

@larry #70 that is the dumbest one on here. Spezza is a piece of crap worse than Linden or Yashin

  84. avatar The new isles gm says:

Alright CB…Here’s my realistic trade offer….since ur waiting to hear one.

Nabokov to Colorado for a 3rd round pick on draft day.

Isles trade the 5th and both second rounders to Florida for the 3rd overall pick….

Florida is in massive rebuild mode. They can still come out of this draft with Coturier and two more 2nd rounders. Sounds fair to me….

  85. avatar Erika says:

Parise or Weber only! There are several players who will be very good still available at 5. Take the BPA and move on!

  86. avatar Dan C. says:

Where is this idea that Florida would want to trade down coming from? Assuming they can sign Gudbranson and pair him up with Kulikov as a 1-2 punch on D, they now need a franchise forward to build around and there is a very good chance that they will get one at #3 with Landeskog. Why would they possibly want to pass that up in exchange for #5 and a couple of later round picks?

  87. avatar Ethan K says:

“We always draft the best player available but our “best player available” may be different in our eyes than the rest of the hockey world,” Snow said.”

If Hamilton or Larsson or there, it is a freakin’ slam dunk of a pick… There was another GM recently who constantly went off the board at the draft… let me put it this way– I don’t know if Snow has the persona to become a hockey analyst for NBC when he’s done being a GM.

  88. avatar THollinger says:

i don’t even think this is news. it may be b/c Snow holds the cards so close to his chest, and everyone, fans – and media whose job it is to fill that hunger for info this time of year – etc., take anything and run with it, whatever tidbit they can get; however, if i were GM, I too would say the same thing, and so is pretty well ever other GM:

“We’re weighing all our options, we construed several possibilities of trades and drafting the player(s) we have valued and listed. We would be willing to trade up, or down, or trade the pick altogether, for the right deal, the right fit, the right player that would improve our team, in the short and long term, and ultimately, help us with our goal to win the cup.” Not really news, just the obvious party line.

  89. avatar nyi 16 says:

Im against trading the pick for a veteran, At 5 we should be able to draft a heck of a player that we will have for at least 10 years (ufa 28). Please don’t pull a Milbury and blindly overpay for someone who doesnt want to be here or who’s best years are in the past!! Dont trade the pick!

  90. avatar Frans Dish says:

    THollinger is spot on

  91. avatar Sean says:

How about the fifth overall and the third rounder for Jerome Iglina. Calgarys getting older and worse after allready missing the playoffs the last few years and they have one of the worst farms in the NHL. Jerome could do wonders with J.T.

  92. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

Draft a good young player at #5 and get the arena deal done will make me happy!

  93. avatar Ray says:

Really no need to get cute here….any of the Top ten can potentially be really good NHL players…Let the first four picks take who they please and then select who you (Garth) feel is the BPA at 5. If anything trade back into the end of the fisrt round if we go Foward with the 5th I want Klefbom if we can manage to move up with the next pick

  94. avatar Pete says:

5th, a second, Bailey and dehaan for malkin. He skates with okposo and comeau on the NHL best second line

  95. avatar larry says:

Haleyrules, your name sums up your hockey knowledge. Spezza turns 28 tomorrow averages over a point a game is signed and played well with Tavares at the world cup, and giving up Bailey and a draft pick is nothing

  96. avatar Steve says:

Let’s pick the best available at #5 and get creative on moving up as much as possible with the next one. Last year with that strategy, however, I hope.

  97. avatar okie21 says:

I really just want them to make the pick at #5. I love the dreams of Parise, Weber or Nash but there’s no way any team is trading those guys for just the pick. You’re looking at throwing in an Okposo plus a prospect(s) and it’s just not worth it at this point. I’m not looking at giving up any pieces we already have intact. Maybe you could go to the Devils and offer them #5 for Travis Zajac, but the Parise’s of the world are not realistic.

  98. avatar Adam says:

Post #92…Even if we got Malkin, what would be the point. He would want to go to a team where he is not #2 (behind Crosby). HE would still be #2 to Tavares here…
My offer would be 5th and Bailey for one of the big San Jose Shark 3 (Thorton, Heatly, or Marleau)…

  99. avatar Joe says:

I wouldn’t mind packaging Bailey and the 5th pick for Parise, Weber, or Brent Burns- maybe something like Bailey, the 5th, and another pick or prospect to Minn for Burns and the 10th pick?

  100. avatar Jon in Chicago says:

I’d be stunned if the Isles traded the No. 5 pick for a player. More likely is they trade down, something Garth seems to like to do. I hope they just pick whoever they think fits best at No. 5, I don’t think we need another 2nd-round pick.

  101. avatar Joe says:

Haha Malkin is untouchable in Pittsburgh, yet you think he’d be No. 2 here? He is the clear No. 1 basically anywhere. You guys are talking about the third best forward in the NHL (behind Crosby and Ovechkin).

  102. avatar loaf says:

Crazy scenario i just thought of. We trade the 5th overall pick to new jersey for parise, jersey trades the 5th overall pick to dallas for Dallas 14th overall pick and a 2nd rounder. Jersey can then draft a forward early on such as Huberdeau, Landeskog, Couturier, etc. Then Dallas can take another strong forward early on. With the 14th pick in the draft devils will also get a shot at another good player such as Oleksiak, Sven Bartschi or others. And isles of course wind up with PARISE!!!! everybody wins

  103. avatar Kevin 27 says:

Let’s stop the dreaming about Malkin and Parise.

Chris – no need to explain yourself with that opening. You are far more fair to Newsday than they are to you. You link and tweet them all the time and give them credit when it is due. You have been ahead of them on so many stories since your ban going back to the Rolo trade. You owe them nothing and don’t have to explain yourself to us.

We appreciate the coverage while everyone else is sitting on their hands.

  104. avatar Patty says:

I see Snow is getting cocky. He says in Katie’s article that his view of the best player available may not be the same “as the rest of the hockey world.”

What a clown. His team has been picking in the top 5 since 2006. Even MM got those picks right. Snow has only gotten the Tavares pick perfectly right. His picks have been good, nothing great. Time will tell on Calvin, but I don’t know anyone who thinks he’s going to be great.

You would think Snow would be humble after finishing last the last 4 years but I was wrong. I guess he’s getting a big head after Islanders fans have been calling him one of the best GMs. He’s a great GM in June. He struggles when the games count.

  105. avatar Ryan says:

What’s with all the Rick Nash talk, is he really available? Depending on his contract status, I would easily trade the pick in a package for him. I say “in a package” because unless the Columbus GM is a crystal meth tweeker, there is no way Nash is getting traded straight up for a draft pick.

  106. avatar Pete says:

Sorry Joe. Didn’t realize u were so close to malkin. It’s semantics to say first or second line. I also disagree that he is untouchable. Both the tavares and a malkin line would be great. Add in grabber, neilsen and nino and u have three fantastic lines. The rebuild would be over.

  107. avatar glenn says:

    chris,
what do u think about a guy like STEPHEN WEISS FROM FLORIDA. Not for the fifth pick, but a guy who could benefit from a change of scenery (look at Nathan Horton to Boston). Any interest there and what would the price be????

  108. avatar Y2G says:

I think staying at 5 is the best bet. All year we paid attention to the big 4 (RNH, Landeskog, Larsson, Couterier) now that Huberdeau out of nowhere is slated as a top 5 pick with a couple of blogs and websites having him go 2nd to Avs that means we get a shot at 1 of the big 4. I doubt the Devils would let Larsson get passed them and I don’t like the idea of settling for Hamilton. I think we make out like bandits if we get either Couterier or Landeskog. Although people have said Strome is this year’s Skinner I honestly don’t think Skinner would score 15goals playing in the Atlantic against our competition. If Strome and Skinner are so similar then I think that extends to Strome coming in this year. We need a Kesler-type to beat the Flyers, Pens, NYR, and Devs and Couterier and Landeskog are those 2 guys and most nhl ready (i.e attendance)…Garth would be nuts to pass on either of them and I agree with whoever said the Pens and Hawks got to cup by not trading their lottery picks.

  109. avatar blitz says:

Nice thought but not gonna happen. Snow lives in fear of criticism and being looked at as the next joke of a GM. He hasn’t made a risky move since trading for Ryan Smyth more than 4 years ago. I do not consider trading 5 draft picks to take de Haan risky, just moronic. The Bailey move was fine but not high risk.

Snow will stand pat. The last thing he wants to do is rush what CB calls the slow and steady rebuild. This buys him more time while a lot of fans here and on other boards call him a genius.

  110. avatar kg says:

Good fodder with nothing else going on with the Islanders until the draft in 11 days. There won’t be a blockbuster. They will pick at 5 and thats ok with me.

  111. avatar Alex says:

In the newsday article, snow pumps up the idea of a trade and then shoots it down in the next paragraph. That’s what he does.

Brian Compton is going to be heartbroken. There will be no major move.

  112. avatar Mike says:

I’ll package the 5th pick with something for Malkin. Get it done.

  113. avatar Garver says:

Brian Burke got the 2nd and 3rd picks in the same draft and got the Sedins. Chiarelli has his team in the final and had the 2nd overall pick and another first rounder this year for Kessel. He also has good young players like Krejci and Marchand and MacQuaid.

Tampa has a great present and future and a real management team. Philly is Philly and the Devils are the Devils. Watch NJ be better than us after one bad year when they still finished ahead of us and got he btter pick in the lottery.

I hope the Islanders prove me wrong and actually do something bold this time.

  114. avatar Lauren says:

I hope Penguins fans don’t see this thread. They would be laughing at the Malkin stuff. Please stop embarassing us. The Islanders would need to trade the 5th overall pick plus at least three players before Shero would even start listening.

    Just stop.

  115. avatar Thomas says:

If San Jose called and asked what it would take to get #5, I would settle for one of setoguchi, pavelski,or boyle.

  116. avatar ken says:

    #5 for Pavelski

  117. avatar CC says:

There are two things you can always count on from our gray GM. First, in April he’ll always say it’s “unacceptable” when the Isles don’t make the playoffs even though he did nothing to help get them in the playoffs. And in June and July he’ll leak out work about how he wants to make a big deal and signing and is “kicking the tires” and “dropping lines in the water.”

I’m not buying even if a lot of people are. Facts are facts.

I know you’re just doing your job CB but I would have preferred you didn’t give Snow the time of day for his annual summer nonsense.

  118. avatar hathead68 says:

Keep the pick and pray Landeskog is available, or do what you need to do to get him. Again do what needs to be done to move back into the 1st round and grab Oleksiak and call it a day, even if we have to use all our remaining picks. Then sit back and listen to Pierre McGuire and everyone else applaud the Isles for having the best draft of all 30 teams. That is what will move this rebuild along. Just watch the tree bear fruit.

  119. avatar RA says:

I think it’s unlikely that the isles make a move. It’s become standard policy to blow smoke prior to the draft. First it was snow’s lack of interest in Tavares. Last year three gm’s were claiming that their pick was available. Most likely scenario is we stay pat at 5.

  120. avatar David says:

No point in doing a trade. the 5 pick will be a solid player. if the islanders make a trade it should be with nabokov.

  121. avatar Blizzard says:

I would do our fith for Pavelski… that’s a pipe dream tho.

  122. avatar robert says:

first of all its funny that so many think that parise will be part of a draft deal and come here. who ever thinks that will happen might as well believe that d.p. is the number 1 goalie in the nhl. regarding the pick as i have said in the past with snow and wang running the show, what everyone else thinks is a number 5 pick in the first round could be passed up and they could pick up what everyone else considers is a 3rd or 4th draft round pick as their first round pick in the draft. since snow hinted that in the rags owned newspaper,it is very possible that can happen. remember in wangs and snows dysfunctional way of doing things, everyone else is wrong and they are right. it must be working. just look at how many times the isles have been in the playoffs since wang has been running things his way.

  123. avatar Isles Fanatic says:

I don’t know who or what they can get for the number 5 pick, but if it can be a top line forward to help this team take the next step…I am all for it, the Isles have plenty of prospects now, they can afford to give up on the nuber 5 pick IF the price is right, and the player can be part of the team for at least 3 to 5 years

  124. avatar JerseyIslander says:

First off… It’s TAVARES… not TAVERAS… Franchise player, at least take the time to spell it right! Moving on…

I don’t see how trading down would be such a bad thing. Especially if you could get back into the middle of the first round. Still be able to grab one of the mish mosh of decent forwards, and probably grab a d man too. We don’t need all the extra picks, and we definitely don’t need someone else’s bad contract, we have our own thank you.

  125. avatar Brian G says:

    Here is the order:
    1. #5 with Dehaan & eaton with a 2011 2nd round pick for Webber
    2. #5, 2011 2nd rd pick, 2012 2nd rd pick,
Parenteau, Dehaan, & Motteau for Parise
    3. Make a similar trade to the NYI Toronto trade from 2 years ago…with either Colorado or Florida to get the #2 or #3 pick…#5 pick, 2011 2nd rd pick, 2012 3rd rd pick, & since either team Needs a Goalie so add in Nabokov.

  126. avatar bags says:

Talk about the slow and steady rebuild all you want. If you mean the Isles are getting close by meaning 7th or 8th place, maybe. But deal in reality.

We are years from being as good as Boston and Philadelphia. Tampa is better. As long as Crosby is healthy, they’re way better. Even their work ethic is better than ours. Washington may stink in the playoffs, but theyre way better for the first 82 games that count.

Buffalo finally has a real owner who is going to spend the money and help a real hockey staff. Montreal is always in the mix and they’re better players are better than any Isles fans want to give them credit for.

As a small goal, we should try to be better than the two local teams.

Drop some lines in the water Snowy – unless you’re good with being in 13th or 14th place again.

  127. avatar Joeisles says:

Maybe we can move from 5 to 7 and take this year’s version of Skinner, who Snow and Wang passed on last year. I don’t even think they had the kid to LI for a visit. Did they?

But In Garth We Trust, right!

  128. avatar @mygameworn says:

Carter and Hartnell both have No Movement Clauses. They aren’t waiving them to come here. You MIGHT be able to pry Giroux away with the 5th and either Bailey,Comeau or even PA.

  129. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Can we trade it straight up for a guarantee on the new arena?

I say unless you get someone to ride shotgun with JT you make the pick where it is. Then do your thing in free agency and strengthen up the back line with some size and sand paper.

  130. avatar Cary says:

What about #5 for David Backes and change?

  131. avatar bm says:

offer the devils the pick for Paraise straight up. Tell them if they turn it down we will sign him to an offer sheet that they will be forced to match or lose him anyway.

  132. avatar Dinerboss says:

Snow has to keep the #5 pick and do what ever he can to get the # 3 pick and draft Landeskog. We also need a third high pick in this draft, the isles should trade all there picks this year(except 5) even next years first round pick for this to happen!

  133. avatar StevieL says:

Um CB..is this news? When is an Isle pick not in play? No team has made more curious draft day trades than the Isles recently!
I see no real game changer that would be available for the #5 without a valuable throw in! Bailey has very little trade value , so it would probably have to be an OK or AMAC and I don’t see that happening!
    Keep the pick!!

  134. avatar Westfall says:

Of all of the scenarios above, the one the makes the most sense – using CB’s criteria of “productive and experienced foward” – comes from the folks who proposed Joe Pavelski. San Jose only has about $7m in cap space available (accoring to Capgeek), has only 4 NHL defensemen under contract next season, and has to re-sign RFA Devin Setoguchi. The emergence of Logan Couture makes Pavelski a third-line center in SJ. He makes a reasonable $4m for 3 years, is only 26, and does not own a no-movement or no-trade clause. Had 66 pts last year. I still would keep the pick, but that one makes the most sense.

The player who who fit the NYI the best that is not mentioned above would be LA’s Dustin Brown, but its highly unlikely the Kings would move him…..unless Dean Lombardi is looking to free up some cap space for Brad Richards. Extremely unlikely.

  135. Keep The Pick and sign Comeau, Bailey.

  136. avatar matt from Holtsville says:

    MikeinRichmondVa you are absolutely correct
    finally a smart comment

  137. avatar Brian says:

This comment thread is silly. Take whoever you feel is the best available player at five period.

Do not trade Bailey or trade for a vet who does not want to be here. A lot of players take time to develop (Kesler for example). Do not give up on one because he hasn’t been properly developed and is all of 21 years old.

  138. avatar Al L says:

Thats not exactly a threat #131. Should the devils pass on an offer sheet they will get at least two 1st rounders as compensation since Parise is a RFA.

  139. avatar Joe says:

#127- I’m glad you are writing off Niederreiter so fast. Yes, we didn’t draft Skinner, but successful careers aren’t born out of one season man. There’s a decent chance Nino could end up better than Skinner. For all we know, Skinner may never hit 30 goals again; he could flame out. Nino was a 40 goal scorer again in the junior league and is regarded as easily one of the top 10 prospects in hockey. Be happy with who we got and stop complaining about who we didn’t get.

  140. avatar Bob E says:

We land a guy like carter, Kane or Mallon in return and for sure u trade the pick.

    Lots a
Of cap restricted teams out there. Snow won’t make stupid move to hurt rebuild. In snowy we trust. Let’s go isles.

  141. avatar Dan C. says:

139, Why should anyone be happy with picking Niederreiter over Skinner? For all we know, Niederreiter will never come close to having the kind of season Skinner already had last year. He did play 9 games with Isles and he looked like a grinder to me, while Skinner is already an offensive dynamo. I think NN will be good eventually but Skinner is already there. Why would you take potential over the real thing?

  142. avatar Mike P says:

Would it be crazy to offer NJ this and next years numbder 2′s for the rights to Parise ? I dont think any player any teams is willing to part with is worth our #5, but we do need a top wing. If we do keep and pick with the 5, I hope we grab someone who is close to NHL ready…

  143. avatar Petey Pete says:

Patty 104: “His team has been picking in the top 5 since 2006. Even MM got those picks right.”

Oh yeah, he really nailed the Rick DiPietro selection…

  144. avatar ENV79 says:

The theme of this draft is definitely late bloomers and with Huberdeau or or Strome having big second halves, I question whether the “top 3″ of AL, RNH or GL is still true. Huberdeau alone is empirical proof it’s not; Hamilton, Murphy, Couturier or Strome could easily in the long run be better than one of that so-called first tier.

Second round talent is a Travis Hamonic-type; now ask yourself if you’d really give up ONE Hamonic-type (let alone TWO) and Huberdeau or Hamilton or Couturier or Strome for Landeskog? I’m perfectly content to stay put or even move down one or two slots. We don’t move up unless someone’s taking Nabokov off our hands. We don’t give it up for an established guy unless it’s Shea Weber.

Not that I’m complaining but how and when did this draft suddenly get so deep? At one point, wasn’t this draft considered the weakest since 2007?

  145. avatar sean says:

If snow gets a good offer I hope we don’t get another kirk muller cry baby, oh yeah nabakov also a cry baby.

  146. avatar tonysac says:

Islanders trade their 5th overall, 3rd round pick and Bailey to Pittsburgh for Malkin and a 2nd round. DONE DEAL! Malkin wants out of Pitts, at least thats the impression I get from him. I think he’s sick of playing “under” Crosby and him and Tavares would look sick together! Biggity Bam!!

  147. avatar Isles86 says:

Keep the pick and sign UFA.

  148. avatar Justin says:

    Keep the pick.

  149. avatar tonysac says:

I would still prefer, Couturier and or Hamilton though with the 5th pick. I am all about bringing in the young guys and letting them put the pieces together to build another dynasty.. Lets Go ISlanders!

  150. avatar Doug says:

How about Versteeg and either Carle or Coburn for the #1? Both have 1 year left on their deals but GM’s these days like short term deals.

  151. avatar dose says:

    defense, defense, defense.
    and defense.
if they can bring back a young, tough and mobile d-man for the pick – do it.
    defense.

  152. avatar Jim Clark says:

    Draft Ryan Murphy.

  153. avatar shlo says:

Enough with the nonsense and wishful thinking.
There are very few players that are worth the trade and even than who knows if they’ll sign for a longer term. Snow is playing around, dangling the bait in front of the fans and they are biting. Forget Carter and Malkin, they will not perform here. They’ll take the money and go through the motions.
Take the pick, let it be a home grown team.
We are going nowhere for another couple of years. No rush. The teams that are in the middle of the pack stay there for a long time. Those at the bottom rebound better. From pathetic ownership (Spano and Milstein) to one disastrous GM (mad mike)we had no chance.
We have no choice but give Snow a chance with the slow meticulous rebuild. Makes more sense than jumping all over the map for a change.

  154. avatar jeff says:

you get parise for the 5th round pick and throw in the french canadian kevin poulin for marty to mentor to be his heir,,,,

his knees are done, and this deal is possible…..

  155. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

Why does it have to be a vet? How about #5, a 2nd rounder and Bailey to Winnepeg for, #7 and Bogosian. The Isles might still be able to draft Strome or Hamilton with that pick and add Bogo.

  156. avatar BIGSAVE77 says:

In my humble opinion I think he should try and trade up but only to get Larsson. He would round out our top 4 dmen and stabalize a weak point on our team. I think a good trade would be our number 5 and a 2nd to Toronto for Nazem Kadri. Reunite the two London Knights together and set us up for a long time to come.

  157. avatar MD says:

Jeff… sounds nice but that is a heavy price to pay. To give the Devils Pick 4 AND 5 AND a goalie prospect so heavily touted? Nah.

Lou is in Cap trouble. I would drop a top-paid player to have 4 and 5 ANYTIME. That would be an amazing draft year for sure for that franchise. For the Isles it would make sense too.

    STRAIGHT UP.. 5 for Parise.
    Works for both sides.

  158. avatar streit02 says:

can we stop with all the conspiracy theories. The Islanders are not dangling the pick to mess with fans. Talk about people “drinking the koolaid” and being brainwashed.

  159. avatar Jzimm says:

I can’t believe that there are a few people still getting bent over the Ryan Smyth trade. It was a risk worth taking, and we gave up NOTHING for him.

I don’t see this pick being moved. Edmonton has put their #1 overall in play, too. This draft doesn’t appear to feature that “home run” pick. It’s a year where a team adds on to its nucleus, not so much picks the cornerstone of its franchise. Snow and Tambellini, and anyone else who is willing to trade the pick will ask for a king’s ransom, but they won’t get it.

  160. avatar dose says:

Some of these declarations of absolute
knowledge like “We are going nowhere for another couple of years” and “Carter and Malkin, they will not perform here. They’ll take the money and go through the motions” are rooted in drek.
If the GM sees chance to improve the team now and for the future by moving this pick, he should do it. If not, he should hold onto the pick. That’s why he’s GM.
I laugh when I read procalamations by people who fancy themselves wisemen (or women) with some great insight that’s beyond everyone else.

  161. avatar Frans Dish says:

The 5th pick straight up for Parise? Mike Milbury isn’t the GM of the devils. This guy has it all – out works everyone, snipes, sets ppl up, and intangibles. Maybe 2nd overall or even 1st overall for Parise 5th overall is a joke. Some 5th overall picks don’t even pan out.

  162. avatar Big Van Vader says:

Garth Snow will stand pat. This is all Snow hyping the draft for Isles fans and getting us geared up for it. He’ll take “what’s left” at 5. As for bringing in any top guys via trade or RFA offers, forget it. When was the last time the Isles did either? Really? Ryan Smyth and waaaay before that a rumor for Jeremy Roenick?!?! Really, guys…..

They will continue to build this thing from within through the draft and sign “decent” guys like Joel Ward. If we actually got someone like Brooks Laich, it will be a minor miracle.

  163. avatar greg h says:

GMs always say this with Lotto picks or Burkie with his picks. Any GM is going to listen to offers, they would be dumb not to. Garth even said, if you read the actual article interview that 95 percent of the time nothing comes of it and they draft where they have their pick. So not sure where all the snow bashing comes from, when he said it first. He will listen to offers or try to make something happen as he sees fit, but there is a 5 percent chance of a deal going down. This happens every year with every GM, so its nothing new. Only some gms makes it public and then the fans go bonkers on their own accord, while the media conjures up ridiculous trade rumors.

  164. avatar thepolishprince says:

Round one – keep your spot and pick the best player available. Subsequent rounds – repeat. End of story.

  165. avatar Sumo Goalie says:

134 – I would kill for Dustin Brown. Talk about a building block – and he’s from New York State with family in the NYC area so he actually might want to play here.

  166. avatar Nagin says:

eric cole and 3/6 of the canucks d-core are all free agents. why couldn’t we make a play for any of these without giving up a top 5 pick? cole has been in carolina and edmonton, how could he turn up his nose at LI?

  167. avatar Nagin says:

also if anyone really believes the devils are giving up parise is crazy. we had our chance to get him. blame milbury.

  168. avatar Dan C. says:

The Kings, a team looking to win now, are not trading their captain for a draft pick. The Pens are not trading Malkin for the #5 pick, Bailey and a 3rd rounder. Why not Crosby, Malkin and Staal for the #5 pick, Bailey and De Haan?

  169. avatar Dave says:

I don’t wanna trade this pick. Tavares, Niederreiter and this years pick will be the foundation of this core for many, many years.

I believe our current roster is really good when injury free. We just need some minor adjustments to reach the playoffs.

    Build through the draft.

  170. avatar tom in nj says:

unless we are getting Zach Parise somehow in trading this #5 pick, NO WAY!!!!! sit on it and get the best defenseman you can. IMO of course ; ). The devils would have the #4 and #5…something to think about if I were them.

  171. avatar Lyle says:

how about our 2 second round picks and baily for………… Shawn Horcoff. very good and fair trade for both teams.

  172. avatar kcNYI says:

CB – how do you like this?

2011 and 2013 first round picks for Zach Parise.

By 2013 our first round pick should be between 20-30.

  173. avatar BanGarth says:

We are taking the pick . if the team had a PR department Garth would have known better than to open his mouth. You think we are going to take on a salary as opposed to drafting a young player we don’t have to pay for a few years? Trade a 2nd rounder for a PR intern who will talk to the media and not have the only real reporter banned for not being a puppet.

.. Im glad that Garth is at least creative and dangling the pick. Shane Weber is not going anywhere peopel, a young Dman like that? cmon lets be real

.. I wonder how much easier it would be to get a Free agent *if* the areana is passed. I think it would make things alot easier

.. Adding a vet without giving up anything would be wonderfull, its a loooong shot but might be easier *if* the arena is built, it shows the Isles are serious players! :-)

  175. avatar SM says:

how about we keep the pick, and overpay
(if necessary) for a solid player. this way we get to keep the young talent, while making use of that cap space we possess. tavares is on the last year of his entry deal, 3 years at 900k, with $3 million in possible bonuses. then hes a rfa, aka indentured servent. trading the top 5 pick makes little fiscal sense. you get a good to great player, at a discount, for more then 5 years. draft the player, and spend your money on a known talent. fina guy with upside, and sign him cheap with the promise of playing time( our word is pretty good here, considering MM and PAP) and sign a solid player with a bit of overpay. we have the money, so why waste the draft pick..best of both worlds, be greedy..

  176. avatar tom in nj says:

Garth may have no intention of trading it. possibly just wants to see if anyone bites.

  177. avatar BanGarth says:

SM for GM , well said 175-

  178. avatar fauxrumors says:

    1) Why make a trade when the Isles can cheaply pick up some familar faces in
    Hamrlik
    Brewer
    McCabe ; )
    2) Seriously, don’t see anything happening there. Makes for pre draft intrigue, nothing more.

  179. avatar Ray says:

sombody said Eric Cole… I would love to add him even if we have to over pay…Dougie can bring him in…He still had plenty of game left and we could keep the 5th over and draft a player who will eventually be a good player for us in the future..

  180. avatar John says:

Trade the 5th pick, Bailey’s rights and the 2nd 2nd Rounder to Florida for their pick (3) and a 2nd Rounder in 2012. Then draft Adam Larsson.

  181. avatar Joeisles says:

I’m looking forward to CB posting a new story and closing this thread. Just about all of these trade proposals make Snow look smart, which is hard to do.

  182. avatar Mario says:

    Take Strome and go home.

  183. avatar Chris R says:

I dont see Garth trading the pick for a player. I do see him trading the pick to either Winnipeg or Columbus for 7th or 8th overall and another second round. Honestly, I’d use the 5th overall pick and draft the best player available.

  184. avatar Stu says:

have no fear. Charles Wang will be at the head of the table with his NHL guide book open. Snow will be at his side doing everything Wang tells him to do. Doug Weight is now the preferred dinner companion. The chief scout is, there is no chief scout.

But sure, the Islanders will get this right!

  185. avatar IslesNC says:

Isles should utilize what will hopefully be their last top-5 selection for a while by either selecting at no. 5, or trading up for Landeskog. As far as trading the no. 5 for an established player because the Isles “have to make the playoffs next season”, the arena issue will probably be decided in late 2010 (NIFA), long before we know if the team will be a playoff contender in 2011-12 (say, March 2012). So it still seems prudent to use the no. 5 position (not just in round 1) to finish off the re-build rather than trade for a player who will probably be over-paid (why else would a team be willing to trade him?).

Good to see someone else target the exact players I’ve mentioned, Landeskog and Oleksiak. It would be expensive, as it would probably take trading up from 5 to 2 or 3 for Landeskog, and up to 12-15 for Oleksiak. Nabakov, a current Isles player, Isles top 4 picks in 2011 and at least next year’s no. 2 (possibly no. 1) would have to be involved, but that would put an exclamation point on the re-build.

BTW, I’m still wondering how the $28-35 million in debt service (at 4-5% per year) for the $350 million in bonds will be found for the 2 years of the construction phase. After all, The Isles will still probably be losing money annually, and the new revenues will not have kicked in yet. Maybe an up-front payment on an arena naming-rights deal, or some pre-payment of ticket packages could help pay for that.

  186. avatar Toby says:

Keep the pick or even trade down to somewhere else in the top 10. The draft is such a crapshoot. The NHL ad that aired during Game 6 last night showed some of the leagues top stars. SO MANY were drafted outside the top 5, even top 10.

  187. avatar Stumpy32 says:

Anyone saying that the Isles will get this right and wrong have no clue. Okposo was drafted in 2007, Bailey in 2008…are we sure the Isles were “right” or “wrong” on either one…even now? The fact is, you do the best you can with the information you have at that point. Even with a bare-bones scouting dept, the world knows all about these players. The Isles will pick best available, and we’ll debate the pick for years unless its another Crosby.

  188. avatar Taylor says:

just keep the pick draft hamilton so that in a couple years kansas city has a great team and wins a cup because nassau county are a bunch of yuppie f*cktards

  189. avatar Mike says:

What about Winnipeg? I’m sure there are some players (good ones) on that team that do not want to pack up in Atlanta and move there. Would Winnipeg take the 5th overall pick, one of the Isles’ second round picks and P.A. Parenteau for the 7th overall pick and Blake Wheeler?

  190. avatar RV says:

Any chance the Isles take a chance and throw an offer @ Shea Weber? The guy is a complete animal and worth every penny they’d have to pay for him. If not him, what other RFAs might be on their radar?

  191. avatar Claude says:

    Parise equals playoff berth

  192. avatar hale says:

how about the 5th pick and bailey for yandle?? or the 5th pick and nino for weber…their i said however, i have an unhealthy man crush on shea weber

  193. avatar Jmig15 says:

Ummm..am i missing something or should every teams first pick always be up for offers, isn’t it the gm’s job to poke around and see what he can get?

  194. avatar Bob E says:

why is Bailey’s name being dangled in every trade. do people not realize He is probably second to Tavares on our team as player with most upside potential. Josh Bailey was thrown in the fire. He has Mike Richards type written all over him.

Also, with top 5 pick you draft the most skilled foward or a game changing DMAN. that is exactly why you dont draft Dougie Hamilton. Larson and Murphy are only ones that fit the bill and Murphy is too small.

Draft the best foward and sign a Big name DMAN.
