Dregs, Dougie H, Marek and Pierre McGuire in less than 24 hours. Nice, CB. Keep it up.
-
Someone call the FD because CB is on fire!!!!!!!
-
Dreger is great but I don’t get why he calls Snow aggressive. He has made thebig moves to trade 5 picks to take de Haan and moved back for extra picks and took Bailey, but Snow hasn’t made a major trade to improve the team since the Ryan Smyth deal.
He may be aggressive on the trade floor just like Wang wants him to be since the owner is there, but other than picking up guys on waivers when we’re in last place, that’s about it for big moves.
-
CB, you are on fire…..We are forever indebted to u. This is the way we all predicted you’d come out after the Isles took ur credentials away. Either way…. 29 other teams would be happy to have u!
-
No one knows yet if Garth will ever be a good GM (I go by the standings, not potential). But to say he’s one of the more agressive GMs in the league is flat out inaccurate. Overpaying to draft Calvin de Haan with so many great prospects left on the board was questionable and may turn out okay, but not enough to label Snow as a mover and shaker. I’m sure Garth loves the praise though.
-
I’m very excited about getting another top 5 draft prospect. I’m not holding out any hope that Wang and Snow will do anything noteworthy over the weekend about making this year’s team better. Prove me wrong, gentlemen.
-
You’re spoiling us! Got more? No other team gets these top announcers talking about their teams on a local blog. Outstanding job by CB and all the analysts. Who’s next?
-
garth will get us a great player at 5 and make one major move this weekend. I know I can count on him
Dreger is right about Garth
-
hi chris
-
on top of the draft and ufa how about we re aquire your credentials! your a huge asset to this organization and to all of us fans. Your work is amazing and I think I speak for everyone when I say you are very well respected by the Long Island community. We always believed in your Chris and thank you for all the work….bring on the draft, bring on the UFA season and bring on the 2011-2012 Islanders! CB, we’re all ready because of you, THANK YOU!!
-
Man, CB’s on fire today.
-
It’s a Botta-splosion.

To those who feel Snow is not aggressive b/c he has not made any blockbuster trades in this rebuild. Bill Torrey did not make a single major trade until Goring, the final piece. While it took Torrey 3 years to make playoffs, he was drafting 20 year olds, not 18 year olds. Even in baseball, Pat Gillick of Toronto Blue Jays was labelled “Stand Pat” for not making a big trade…until Carte and Alomar and then won back to back world series.
Trading established players for draft picks and prospects is risky business. Even Torrey lost his share. This is why GMs always ask for at least one established NHLer to be included. The best rebuilds in history for the most part drafted and developed well, let prospects develop, waiting to see what they had, then traded from depth to fill holes.
-
Katie,
How is the weather at the beach? Wish you were here!

The Devoted Islander Fanbase -
snow did make one major trade earlier in his career as a gm, he brought in ryan smyth. when it became apparent the team wasn’t going to do anything other than fight for the 8th seed, he decided to build it properly, not much point in making trades early when you have nothing in the farm system and no NHL players to move on the roster. I think he has done extremely well based on what the organization looked like when he took over.
-
CB outstanding work. Darren is right, Snow is aggressive and has accumulated talent in a short period of time. Every GM will make mistakes, however, he hits home runs more often then strikeouts: Grabner, Moulson, Streit. I would also take Hillen in a heart beat over Gilroy. It might not pan out, but isn’t taking Petrov and Kabanov aggressive? Let’s see how Bailey, Nino and Calvin develop before we throw Snow under the bus.
-
nice new format!
-
Good stuff. Really enjoying the telecasts. Hope there is more to come during the final days leading up to the DRAFT. What a week of anticipation and Islander news.
-
good stuff….one vet who can still play that I think would be a good fit is Cole from Carolina….Mayby Dougie can convince him to come over…
-
Snow’s tenure:
Brought in Smyth and Bergeron for the playoff push in 2007 at little cost in retrospect. Thumbs up.
After the UFA’s left town in ’07, has committed to rebuilding. Thumbs up.
Signed Streit, in what is the best free agent signing made by any team since the lockout, aside from the Bruins and Chara. Thumbs up.
Signed Moulson. Thumbs up
Has been aggressive on the waiver wire, acquiring Grabner, Nabokov and Schremp (a gamble worth taking even if it didn’t work out. Thumbs up
Drafting: Big Thumbs down, at least in the first round. The Bailey, de Haan and Niederreiter picks all flew in the face of conventional wisdom, and they would have been better off taking the consensus pick each time. JT was a no brainer. Later rounds are too early to tell, although Hamonic looks very good.

Great stories Chris,
I suppose that the person we will draft will be whichever top player slips to 5 – unless Garth and Co. have someone pegged at their # 1 – who might be available later on……and trade down to get that asset ( a la Bailey)
If we stay at 5 – I want Larsson to slip there. I think we can trade down two slots to get either Murphy or Hamilton — but we shall see ! 48 hours from now – we will know!
-
Great job, Chris. Boy you have been hard at work. The TSN panel are heavy hitters and bring a lot of credibility. Thanks again!
-
Hey CB — you have a broken italics tag somewhere in this story that’s breaking the rest of the site on MSIE 8.0.
-
Dan C I agree almost entirely on your post. He has drafted well. He is actually developing his players in junior and in the Ahl. He drafted Poulin who until the knee injury was looking like the real deal, I think he still is. He traded a late pick for Montoya which worked out well also. I think you will find Dehaan will turn out to be a very good pick he just has to develop like everyone seems to criticize Garth for not doing. With the cards he was dealt he has made a very good hand.
-
CB says Roll the Dice on ICE and picks RYAN STROME!!!!
-
Its nice when we get “hockey minds” on here who actually have some insight on the team unlike that schlep head who was here a few months ago bashing the team when he couldnt make any valid points.
As far as Snow goes, some above already defended him correctly. Most complaints are made about Snow with no alternative listed as to what he “should have” done according to the complainer. He’s never made a bad trade and so far has drafted extremely well even when going against the grain. Id rather have our guys than Nikita Filatov and Brett Connolly. Not to mention the extra picks we grabbed in the Bailey draft. We’ve had 5 players play in the NHL already from the 2008 draft. Bailey, Hamonic, Poulin, Dibo, Martin. (not sure if Ullstrom came up for a game or not). Out of the 7 picks we had in 2009 3 are guaranteed NHLer’s already. I dont understand why people bash the Calvin Dehaan pick. I admit myself i was surprised they would move up so high to grab him (i wanted Kassian), but i heard a rumor that someone around that pick had an eye on Dehaan. True or not, Snow traded Mike Comrie and “I’m 2 good for the NHL” Campoli for that 1st round pick. So if Snow wasn’t a good enough GM to make that original trade there would be nothing to complain about because we wouldnt have had another pick in the 1st round. (I think these moves are where the term “aggressive” comes into play). Snow goes after what he wants and feels strongly about the moves he makes.
Sorry this is so long, but i recently watched on MSG the rise of the devils. It clearly stated how Lou Lamoriello came into the organization with a plan in mind and stuck to his guns for years by building his team through the draft and shrugged off all naysayers to see his plan through.
You cant turn a team into a contender in 2 years when the well is completely dry to start. Let this thing play out. We are on the right track. -
Garth Snow is doing a fine job. I am pretty sure he suggested the rebuild to Wang. Maybe scouts did as well or backed him up…Dont really know, but it was EXACTLY what this team needed. I think the past 4 years might be the best thing that has happened to this franchise since the 80s. I think we are going to have a real solid and exciting team that is obviously young. I also feel that getting Grabner and Moulson will turn out to be even bigger down the road when they the team is in the playoffs and one of those players goes on a tear and scores 6 goals in a series. Moulson is that kind of player. Tavares-no brainer, no credit there though. Islanders have been looking for a powerplay specialist for years and we will have one in De Haan. I think we will love him. Now lets pray Larsson slips to 5th, but I think the Devils STOLE him from us.
-
Go Garth!!! Our collective hopes are in your hands!!
Btw, CB, love the new look of the set.. Gotta lose the gut if your gonna sport a tucked in golf shirt look… Sorry, just keepin it real…
-
Its an Islanders fan most exciting time!!! I have all kinds of crazy thoughts like Strome on a line with Grabner…Nino on top line with JT……Maybe Couturier with Nino…..
notice I have no fantasies about defenseman
-
CB, is it me or does News 12 constantly bash the Coliseum project? They only report that $58 dollars annually to build it! What about the cost if that building would be vacant? MSG puppets!!!
-
2 big problems for director of scouting/player development wang and his so called aggressive assistant snow. as mentioned since the cap is going up what will they do to keep it below the cap floor is one big question. while other teams get better with better players, i dont see things getting any better. i do think snow will be aggressive but giving up tons of draft picks for a player who would be available much later anyway doesnt help matters. sorry to say but i have a bad feeling wang and snow will blow it and pick someone that doesnt make any sense at all. i hope i am wrong but remember you are not dealing with a professionally run organization with a respected management team with respected scouts. you are dealing with wang and snow and basically nothing else. we can only hope for the best.
-
Snow has been aggressive at the draft table…compared to some other GMs.
Thanks for another great interview. No word on the street on Nabby. Good we might need him.
-
Chris your coverage of the NY Islanders is a God send.Thank You very much.Maybe I am old school, but the intro to the NHL Awards show was downright bad taste. And where does Jay Mohr has the nerve to come on this production and bash the Islanders on their attendance ? Bring back the old Awards show from Toronto. After his opening, this viewer changed Channels.
-
your insight and your guests and your coverage is invaluable. what a disgrace that wang and snow feel they have to punish us and you just because of their arragance and stupidity.
-
snow also got grabner, offered more money to UFA’s who took less to play elsewhere. smyth, what did we lose long term to take that risk_nothing. nobody gets them all right, but hes had more hits then misses. filtov, what a debacle_snow avoided. ya cant boo tavares, and it looks like nino is coming next season, wheres the problem there? moulson and grabner signed longer term, for a real fair price. um, AMAC- i think its criminal how cheap/length his deal is signed. anybody want gomez, chris dreary, or maybe komarsarik in leaf land?
hes got us locked into no bad deals. a solid prospect pool that IMPROVES each year, as per Hockey News, plenty of cap space and what else do you want. perfect ..no. but good isnt the enemy of perfect. montoya for seventh rd pick? sweetness.. -
outstanding coverage. waited all day to finally watch this and read the comments!
-
Great interviews CB..top line talent. Damn there are still 35 hours till the draft. I love this!!! After this draft, Im changing my PB screen name. We dont need any more picks!!
-
Great job with these interviews CB…we need some coliseum coverage to drown out the hate on newsday!
-
Wanted to get everyone’s thoughts on this trade
Colorado Gets:
2011 1st round pick (#5)
De Haan
BaileyIslanders Get
Stasney
Either 2nd or 3rd rounder in 2011 -
PPugs – Thank God ur not the GM
-
CB,
You look more comfortable in a suit behind a desk.
Great stuff. Keep it coming.
-
why dont we trade with the devils to get their 4th pick without giving up our 5th overall and give us 2 picks in the top five. or trade with columbus to get their 8th. give the devils, nabokov, bailey and both our 2nd round pics for their 4th overall. or give the devils, nabokov, bailey and our 1st rounder next year. do whatever u have to do to their 4th overall pick and draft couturiere and strome, larsson and couturier, hamilton and couturiere or couturiere and landeskog if hes available. giving up our 1st pick next year is an aggressive and confident move to the fans that we dont plan on picking in the top ten in 2012. GET IT DONE GARTH…. if we go with our 5th pick as planned we have to pick couturiere, were getting a possible 1st overall for the last 2 years at 5
-
do u think the Islanders will try to get Brad Richards?? i doubt it though
-
MURPHY IS TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SMALL!! we need Larsson or Hamilton!!! Murphy will go 2 Boston since they could use a guy like him. nd strome scares me!!! he will either be a baily or a a superstar. big difference their!! nd if we draft a C thern the team will most likely sign baily 2 years or let him go.
-
ppugs – That might possibly be the worst trade I have EVER seen proposed over the net. That’s saying something.
Please don’t ever become the GM of the Islanders.
-
You sure are working hard over there CB. This coverage is great. I really don’t know what they are going to do with Nabakov but he is definitely an asset to have whether we can get a 3rd rounder for him, or use him and then trade him down the road. I love the TSN guys, they have more knowledge then anybody. I love how Newsday is now following in your footsteps (well attempting to anyway) with speaking to coaches of prospects and what not. PPugs, not terrible, but not going to happen. I would take De Haan out of there. He does have 2 years left on his contract though which is nice.
-
ppugs,
Put the crackpipe down and back away from the keyboard. -
