MAGNIFICENT SPRING, JOYFUL SUMMER?
Grabner, KO signings start an exciting offseason

by Chris Botta on June 2nd, 2011 at 10:58 am

11:00 am: When a management team sets forth on a plan and nails it, really knocks it out of the park with a combination of earnestness and ingenuity, it can occasionally be as exciting as a spectacular moment on the playing surface. Such was the case with the Islanders’ back-to-back signings of Michael Grabner and Kyle Okposo, and there could be more to come.

The pair of five-year contracts were wise moves on the most basic terms: value and cost. Grabner’s averages $3 million over the next five years, Okposo $2.8 million. If the downright sanity of the deals is not apparent now, it will be when dozens of restricted free agent forwards across the NHL ink get re-signed over the next three months.

Then, naturally, there are what some general managers like to call the optics:

1. The Islanders have sent a clear message that they will try to keep their nucleus of young talent together, and beyond their opening years of unrestricted free agency.

2. Grabner and Okposo, who could just as easily insisted on going short-term with their second contracts, proved that their commitment to the Islanders and this region was more than just talk.

3. As respected talents and well-regarded men among their peers, Grabner and Okposo sent another important message. If the franchise is good enough for them to sign for five years, perhaps other members of the players’ union will take notice.

4. At a time when the franchise needs good vibrations to carry them during the pursuit of a new arena in Nassau, locking up two essential and highly popular players goes a long way.

5. In terms of real dollars, the payouts for Grabner and Okposo in the first three years of their deals are such bargains, the Islanders will have the money to spend to improve the lineup.

On the other hand, no one has to send thank-you cards to the players. While there has been some talk of Grabner and Okposo sacrificing, make no mistake: these contracts benefit all parties. After an electrifying three-quarters of just one season, Grabner received a commitment of $15 million guaranteed. Okposo, who would be the first to tell you he has yet to have his true breakout season, will have $14 million in the bank. They committed to what they thought was right, and they were well rewarded for it. Five years from now, neither is going to have any regrets.

Why are the contracts so heavily front-loaded? Because well before the end of them, when Grabner gets $5 million and Okposo $4.5 million in 2015-16, Charles Wang is going to know if the Islanders are in Nassau to stay. He’ll know if the rebuild created a consistent contender. He’ll know if the time has come to walk away and either sell the team to a new rainmaker (or exorcist), or – in his worst-case scenario – tell the league he has nowhere else to go. (See: Atlanta this week and Phoenix one year from now).

But as this stage, there is little cause for alarm. The arena drama will play out, much of it out of Wang and the Islanders’ control while NIFA fiddles and the legislature burns.

As of one week ago, there had yet to be any formal discussions regarding a second contract for franchise center John Tavares, whose Entry Level deal does not expire until next summer. In the end, both parties may amicably come to the understanding that finalizing a long-term commitment for Tavares should wait a year. Still, you can be sure that agent Pat Brisson is hearing from the Islanders because locking up Tavares before the arena referendum would be the ultimate accomplishment. Perhaps if the Islanders finalize an approved deal with Nassau in the fall and get a shovel in the ground, Tavares will go very-long-term next summer.

For now, it’s nothing but admiration and respect for Garth Snow and his execution of a pair of contracts in which everyone wins. If you see longtime CFO Art McCarthy on the concourse in October, you might want to give him a pat on the back, too. As the team’s unofficial capologist, McCarthy worked with Snow, Wang and a few other executives on the unique nature of the deals.

They won’t stop at Grabner and Okposo, either. Snow knows he needs at least one Michael Peca type to steady the young core at forward, and he is determined to add that piece this summer via trade or free agency. Defense, where the Islanders have a “full” lineup of defensemen already under contract, may be a different story. Snow may feel otherwise, but he must add one solid player to the blueline, preferably one with experience, toughness and strength.

There is still a lot of work to be done over the next few months. More pieces have to be put in place if the Islanders are going to be one of those ten teams in the East that get to 8-10 games over NHL .500 well before Christmas and then fight for a playoff berth. In the long offseason, time is on their side. They also have the resources, the assets and the cap space. The easiest trap for a manager or a fan to slide into is the one where they fall in love with their team in June.

But so far, so good. We haven’t even reached summer yet and Snow has had a splendid start to the offseason.

A Note to our Readers: After a non-stop spring, a combination of professional and family issues may, at times, result in temporary absences from the blog over the summer. I do not expect any lengthy hiatuses. However, I did want to bring this to your attention in case more Islanders news breaks and you’re wondering when I’m going to get back from the beach. I won’t be there.

Kevin Schultz will chip in when his job allows (thank you, Kevin), and I will cover the draft, roster changes and (most importantly) the arena issue daily – whenever possible – until and past the referendum date of Aug. 1. There are plenty more SNY interviews and Islanders Interactives in the works and there is always lots to cover. Hopefully, I’ll be here so much that you won’t notice the gaps. But I felt I owed the loyal Point Blank readers an explanation in advance should I be away from the laptop. If this happens, I will certainly post and opine on Twitter to the best of my capability from my Blackberry.

Thanks for sticking around during an entertaining offseason so far, with so much more to come. I am indebted to all of you. Always feel free to email me at cb@islanderspointblank.com if you’d like to discuss anything one-on-one. Thank you and enjoy the summer…CB

Comments on this column, and your projections for summer acquisitions and the Islanders in 2011-12, are encouraged.

Strong moves by the Islanders. Great blog. Enjoy whatever time you get off.

  2. avatar Madchef says:

Thanks for all the updates, CB. Always tune in to see whats going on here. Love that the Isles locked up KO and the Gremlin. We do need a Veteran Leader (maybe thats why they are waiting for the Captain to be announced, who is a UFA that can fit that role) and maybe we can get Bieksa this summer as well (after he wins the cup maybe he will be willing to come to an up and coming team, dare to dream) Comeau and Bailey next please (Hillen too,BYE Bruno, Don’t think Konopka will be back either but maybe I’m wrong, think Haley fills that role). Would be great to lock up Tavares, but maybe he will wait and see if the money offering isn’t there?

  3. avatar Islesfaninflorida says:

thanks Chris, your blog or twitter page is always one of the 1st sites i go to, keep up the good work and have a fun summer!

  4. avatar Stumpy32 says:

What a difference between now and late January, when rumors were swirling – possibly without any merit – that Moulson was on his way to Boston, and this board was peppered with comments that if Wang allowed this trade, it would show that there was no interest in spending a cent on anyone and that the team was going to lose everyone.

While the criticism was somewhat justified then, the accolades are just as much so now. Aside from JT, our “core” is locked up cheaply for a while. However, as you said CB, we need a big splash in free agency – not a Crosby-type, but a Peca type. Hone in on a couple of guys like that, we may still be doing game recaps around this time next season.

    Optimism abounds. Kind of nice.

  5. avatar Bruce says:

Chris – Thank you for all you do for us Isles fans !!

  6. avatar Brian in SF, CA says:

The remainder of NYI’s RFA contracts can’t meet the 2011-2012 cap floor. There’s no more Doug Weight bonus to help either. A Tavares deal would not be applicable to 2011-2012 season.

So, NYI must acquire $ in the summer via trade or UFA.

Seems like NYI will seek a momentum deal/signing in furtherance of Aug 1 to identify the team is progressing on the ice.

  7. avatar Dan from Westchester (was Roslyn) says:

I also think they’ll try to do something big with JT. I don’t know if his agent will bite. He’s a sharp guy and he has to know JT is always going to see big money. Grabs and KO do not know that, which is why they jumped at the guaranteed millions. I don’t see Tavares as one of the guys saying he signed because of the new arena when then isn’t one yet.

  8. your work on this site is at the top of it’s class. when it’s all said and done we’ll be calling for your # to be retired…
how has this site NOT been part of the core of this team and fan base moving forward?!

trying not to fall in love with this team in june, but it’s rather tough not to. i don’t recall ever feeling that way about the team, i’m hoping this isn’t all too good to be true. i assume more moves are ahead, i just hope they are the right ones and the rest of our young nucleus is willing to buy in long term when their time comes…

it’s not the terrible play of the mets, or my lack of interest in the super teams of the NBA…even in this off-season following another losing year, there is a lot to be excited about, and i love reading up about it here (and all the comments) multiple times a day.

  9. avatar nyifan72 says:

I agree with everything you wrote. Most of the time I don’t!

I remember Logan writing about your son having major surgery around the time of Dubie’s run to get us into the playoffs in 2007. Hope everything is okay with him and your family.

    Thanks for still writing!

  10. avatar Nawrockstar says:

CB you truly make my day with these posts. Thank you.

I would love to see the Isles sign Brooks Laich this summer. I also wouldn’t mind signing Ville Leino or Kevin Bieksa… although the latter will probably go for big $$$ after his powerful knucklepuck GWG vs. SJ

  11. avatar Staten Islander says:

CB, it is us who need to thank YOU for all of the hard work.

Garth has had a great start to the off season, I hope he gets them an on ice leader.

  12. avatar streit02 says:

everything was covered in pretty good detaail here. Not much else to say that hasn’t already been said. Can’t wait for the season

  13. avatar Darren says:

It’s a no brainer that we’re in better shape for the future than we have in years. But like you wrote, that doesn’t mean we’re going to make the playoffs this year (or the year after that) unless Snow takes care of business. Good young players and prospects don’t count for much. Maybe not every team has as many as the Islanders do, but most have 3-4 their just as excited about as we are about Nino and the rest.

  14. avatar Lauren says:

I’m exhausted and very optimistic after reading all that! I also hope all is well with you and that’s you’ll keep us updated on what’s going on professionally and personally.

I’m thinking about getting a partial plan this season if the offers are good.

  15. avatar Bob E says:

you deserve some time off CB. thanks for all the coverage.

It is indeed great signs of years to come for isles. Its up to us fans now to put up and our shut up.

No more, I wont be seasons tix b/c they not serious about winning. If vote fails and we dont fill the barn, ITS OUR FAULT that Isles won be here past 2015.

LETS GO ISLANDERS and Happy GOOD WEATHER finally everyone.

  16. avatar Newman says:

Add one top six forward. Add one top four forward. Make the playoffs this season. Contend a year or two later. You’re right. They have the money and the assets to acquire these players without mortgaging the future.

  17. avatar Hockeymandad says:

Anxious to see what the Isles are able to do with UFA’s or even some of the RFA’s that might be available and worth making a run at (Parise). Regardless of the pipe dream, still worth a shot. Some good young UFA’s out there also worth going after (Leino, Bieksa) along with another top 5 draft pick. I would like to see Konopka get a 2 or 3 year deal with us. I think Haley fits the fighter role just as well, but big Z brings a HUGE boost to face-offs. Keeping a face off and locker room leader like that around our young core of centers can not be a bad thing.

Thanks for the great writing and you enjoy your summer. If I see you on my beaches, I’ll say hello and buy you a beer. Perhaps Mr. Snow and Mr. Wang will also make the right decision and give you back your full media credentials this summer.

  18. avatar Sean says:

    CAN’T WAIT!

  19. avatar Marc says:

Great job, Chris. I really hope that Mangano and Wang are going to prove without a question of doubt, that that the bond won’t cost tax payers a dime, as promised, by mid-June. If they make it a no-brainer for the tax payers, the legislature, and NIFA, we will all breathe a lot easier. Re: Tavares, don’t players need to wait until Jan 1 of the last year of their contract before signing extensions?

  20. avatar John says:

I’m excited about this team and its potential. Hopefully Montoya wasn’t a 15 game wonder, and the goaltending situation stays stable. My biggest fear is that when it comes to the goaltending contract will trump merit… but if Snow does go out and makes a move for a top 6 forward, then it sends the signal that this team is ready to start to compete and that should mean the best players play.

  21. avatar Harry7273 says:

Most important part of this article

The easiest trap for a manager or a fan to slide into is the one where they fall in love with their team in June.

You said on XM or Hockey Night radio the other day that the Islanders have won offseasons before and October to April are the problems. You were right.

I’d give snow an Incomplete. Right now we’re a last place team until proven differently.

  22. avatar Tom says:

264 GA! Team defense is our #1 concern, we proved we can score goals.

  23. avatar Kallur says:

It’s going to come down to the goaltending no matter what the rest of the lineup looks like.

  24. avatar geduffer says:

Newman(#12) – Why put a ceiling on what they can accomplish next season. Look at the Lightning. Most people thought that they’d be improved and be in that 7-10 mix for a possible playoff spot and wound up getting within one win of the freaking finals (and with a bunch of ex-Isles besides). As far as next year goes, why not us? Well? Why the hell NOT us? Go Isles!

  25. avatar EricCup says:

Even with CredentialGate, you’ve still managed to keep this blog informative and the 1st stop for any Islander fan so kudos to you. I expect some comments criticizing your praise of Garth as a peace offering but I don’t see it that way. It seems obvious to me that management knew the only way to keep the young core together was to have the cap space available when the time came. It’s starting now and their silence on the issue could prove to be genius if the ultimate goal is realized.

  26. avatar Billy the Kid says:

I like Grabner, but its going to be a different game for him, Comeau and most f the others in Oct when they’re 0-0 and some of the media are picking them to be one of the most improved teams. Anyone who has watched this game for a few years know this.

  27. avatar Petey Pete says:

I’ll play devil’s advocate here, but they have the same team this year that they had last year (26th overall in the NHL). While Okposo, Tavares, Grabner all stand to mature somewhat, this team is still a ways away.

I’m not one to advocate a “trade the farm, get vets” bonanza (ie Yashin, Peca, Osgood, and Snow in 2001), but this team needs more leadership and I’d like to see them proactive in trading for a Mike Richards-type player (I know the real Mike Richards is untouchable).

Until then, we’re the same team we were last year.

  28. avatar Garver says:

I have to think more about what they need in July and how they’ll do next season. I just want to say now, thanks for a great site. I’ve read PB every day for 3 years.

  29. avatar Turgeon1993 says:

Funny to read that Lauren may buy a partial plan. I’m going down to a partial from a full plan if Wang and Snow don’t make the right moves when the market opens up at the draft and UFA. Mike Mottau coming off major hip surgery is not the answer on defense.

  30. avatar DD says:

I’m ALWAYS excited for the next season and this year is no different. Just as many questions as there always are, but I love it.

    Enjoy the summer, all.

  31. avatar Al says:

The Okposo and Grabner signings were good but kept the status quo. They signed most of their prospects, which is what you’re supposed to do. What we need to see if the Islanders take a big step forward by spending and making a smart trade or two. Snow hasn’t made many trades of players for players. Its usually dumping a salary for a draft pick, except for the Smyth trade 4 years ago.

  32. avatar CC says:

excellent article. I’m more pumped about this team than I have since 2001.

  33. avatar texas_isles says:

Chris, thank’s for all your hard work, enjoy your time away! It’s time for Snow to kiss and make up with you. You should have full access to the team. Since your the only source of Islander news I get, I will not pay newsdays(dolan’s) fees to access their web site for their fluff stories.

  34. avatar Erika says:

Don’t stay away too long Chris, you know we get crazy when we don’t hear from you! I will be at the draft party as usual. Hoping to get one more stud, one good FA signing, and we’re off…
Chris, I can’t thank you enough for another year of fabulous reporting. Enjoy your summer.

  35. avatar SCLI says:

“Snow may feel otherwise, but he must add one solid player to the blueline, preferably one with experience, toughness and strength.”
UFA 6’4″ 230lb, 30 yr old John Erskine. Big, Strong, Nasty. Played 72 games & Averaged around 15 mins per game with a very good Caps team. Wont break the bank either. PO experience a plus. Might look real good paired with Jucina as a gargantuan 3rd pair.

  36. avatar 93 Miracle says:

Great Read, great job Chris. Been a fan since 92 and I have never been this excited for a season and really the future because I am looking past next season. The defense worries me. Mottau and Eaton are nothing more then #6 defensmemen coming off season ending injuries. Hamonic will be good but he will only be 21 next season, he still needs time. Macdonald is also coming off a big injury but as long as he stays healthy im confident he will contribute and be effective. I am confident we are going to see a similar Mark Streit as we did previously. Jurcina is always hurt but as we know he helps the team win when he is in the lineup even though he is not the most physical big man in the nhl-solid #5. Hillen? He looked better the second half of the season thats for sure and was comfortable handling the puck especially at home. Still though his lack of size on defense and presence worries me. We need Wishart to take his game to the next level even if he does not make the team opening night which is a strong possibility. I see Katic as the better nhl player down the road. Speaking of Katic, when you listed the top 10 islanders prospects and honorary mentions, why no mention of Katic? This kid can skate and did not look out of place. Why is Katic so under the radar?

  37. avatar Al says:

    Hey Chris:

Thanks so much for the daily coverage of the team that has given me so much angst over the years, yet has put a smile on my face over the last few weeks. I have a couple of quick questions.

    1. When are Comeau and Bailey expected to be signed by? Are three year deals reasonable for each of them?

    2. I read that Erik Gudbranson was quite miffed at the way he was treated this past year by Florida, and that he might be forcing his way out of there. Do the isles have enough of a package to pry him away from Florida. He is exactly what this team needs.

    And

    3. As much as I hate Rangers, I thought their trade for Tim Erixon was a smart one, and one that made me wonder why Garth Snow wouldnt pull the trigger on a similar deal? Also, could the Isles trade the rights to Kessel and Gregoire before the draft.

    thanks for the coverage

    Alan

  38. avatar Petey Pete says:

Glad to see other fans advocating for a big trade. I really think if Snow wants to get this team competitive, he needs to pull off one of those big win/win trades in the Connolly-for-Peca mold. We certainly have the pieces for it (Bailey, Comeau, Nino, De Haan, Hamonic, the 5th Overall…)

What I don’t want to see is one of those Phil Kessel deals where we mortgage our next two drafts for a guy who’s a complimentary player. A top 5 goalie, a number 1 defensemen, or a bonafide 2-way center could really put this team over the top the same way and shock the culture of this franchise.

  39. avatar Double Chili says:

Tom & Kallur, combined(#’s 22&23) have it right. I said it two weeks ago. Lower our GA by adding a Top4 Defenseman and have a legit #1 goalie(whoever…i dont care-I wish it to be RDP but anyone will do at this point)and this should be a playoff team.
Once we “get there” on our own, FA’s will take the chance with a team on the rise.

  40. avatar Mars Bonfire says:

Grabber KO and CC signings are icing on the cake. What we need is cake . A new NVMC would be the cake. When that happens I can get excited again

  41. avatar Big Van Vader says:

Isles still don’t have that WOW offense and their defense is missing a top TOUGH d-man. Goaltending is still up in the air. I’m actually starting to believe in Garth Snow and this plan of his. Add the pieces via FA and/or trade. And is giving up those draft picks REALLY too much for Zach Parise? Lots of optimism with this team right now.
Also, if Zenon Konopka isn’t resigned, can they PLEASE get rid of that god-awful “goal song”? It is definitely the worst in the league. (aside from the Rags’, that is)

June 24th Draft Party should be awesome!

  42. avatar Adam says:

    #35…
i dont think the Isles want Erskine back, especially since he played under snow…maybe Bieksa but i would LOVE pitkanen
him and streit on the powerplay would be amazing!

  43. avatar sean says:

We need a great goaltender, not a good one a goaltender that can keep a team in games like Tim Thomas and roberto luongo. Dp should be a glorified back up in my opinion. We will not win with Dp I am sorry to say it but It’s true and a lot of fans agree I am sure. I know he does good things in the community but I don’t see us contending with him. Also a top d man with size and toughness. Please don’t resign Bruno also. I like the signings of Grabner and Kyle and cc. Tavares should get locked up long term next. The arena situation is the biggest which I believe will get worked out when mangano gives the info on the borrowing in mid June hopefully. I am looking forward to next season also. Let’s go islanders!!!

  44. avatar Lorne Myers says:

Excellent read CB, any chance of a Point Blank summer get together. I am sure it will be a challenge, but worth a shot.

  45. avatar admin says:

Thanks so much for all the kind words.

Lorne (44): I have a thought about something a little different leading up to the Aug. 1 vote. Spoke to someone about it last night, in fact. It’s going to be a challenge to put together on short notice and with some scheduling conflicts, but we will try.

As I think I have mentioned before, credential thing is a non-issue in my eyes and has been since January. Life moves on.

I would think if Konopka was going to be re-signed, he would have been by now. I’ve been writing about this likelihood since at least March.

Gregoire and Kessel are now UFAs. They could sign with the NYI but are free to speak with other teams. I’ll have updates on other prospects next week.

I confirmed a little while ago that there have been no talks about a Tavares contract. Maybe another time.

    Thanks again, everyone…CB

  46. avatar StevieL says:

CB! Great read although it is hard for me to really praise Snow all that much for doing something that any other team in the league would do, sign their young talent! Only us islander fans have to get excited when one of our young guy’s actually decide to stay! Lets see what Snow can do with the FA’s and in the draft before we give him an A for the off season. I am really interested in seeing the Bailey signing! i still think he may be trade bait this summer!
By the way, Springtime for Isle fans! Game 1 Stanley Cup, Luongo shutout beats Chara’s Bruins on a winning goal by Torres!Priceless!

  47. avatar Jack says:

    StevieL, that wasn’t funny :)

  48. avatar Boss says:

Thanks for all the updates and my best wishes are with you and your family.

Good offseason so far. We need a good hockey season.

  49. avatar Volek says:

Sorry to hear about the silence between Isles and Tavares at this point. I can’t blame him for waiting to see what happens with the arena. Tavares has plenty of fallback options. Every team will go after him if he ever becomes a free agent.

  50. avatar nova says:

Agree with everything here. Have a nice summer!

  51. avatar Ed from Hempstead says:

They haven’t done anything to improve the team yet. Let’s see what you write after the 4th of July. Let’s see what they do. Nino Niederreiter was useless against teenagers in Kootenay. Stupid to think he’s going to get more than 15 goals in this division against men. Not just this year but the year after.

  52. avatar Lav says:

wake me when the arena thing is finally over and Snow does more than just give the koolaiders hope

  53. avatar Kevin 27 says:

    keep the faith

  54. avatar Mike L says:

I predict that most of the press picks us to finish between 10-13th in the East and thats where well end up.

  55. avatar William says:

okposo deal far from no brainer. Him making 4 and $4.5 million is a joke for a forward who will never score more than 25 goals in a season

  56. avatar Flatley says:

Awesome post CB. Love the sunshine!

  57. avatar rob says:

next major news is Wang and Nassau release full details of arena and property plan and follow-up criticism from NIFA, developers group and pols. If that goes as bad as I expect and the Islanders don’t do much except use their 5 pick and sign Joel Ward and John Erskine, it will get real quiet around here quick

  58. avatar Tony says:

Been a feel-good offseason. Keep it going, Isles. You know we support you.

  59. avatar JT says:

It may be quiet now. I still think they do something with Tavares around August 1st

  60. avatar Randy Wood's Porche says:

Brooks Laich must be added. Not only is he a very good player, he’s a great individual. Last year, he pulled off the road on his way home from a home game to help a woman and her daughter change their flat tire. Priceless.

  61. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

Withote a dote some pieces are falling in place. The big problem, however, still remains, our “franchise albatross.!

  62. avatar Dan C. says:

This team needs two top-9 forwards (including a center), a top-4 defenseman and a goalie. Maybe they have the pieces to the puzzle on hand (the 5th pick, Niederreiter, de Haan, an improved Bailey, Poulin, Montoya) but probably not.

Ironically, I think Nabokov and the Islanders would be a perfect match right now. Nabby ain’t getting any younger, but a solid season backstopping this team into a playoff spot would revitalize his career much like Chris Osgood’s was 10 years ago.

  63. avatar Ted S says:

“The easiest trap for a manager or a fan to slide into is the one where they fall in love with their team in June” Well said CB, We still have a lot of work to do. Hope these good feelings last awhile, Lord(Stanley)knows we deserve it!

  64. avatar Winning says:

Most young playeys love the isles because great ice time is avsilable. Those not happy to be in last place their entire career will leave, like tavares. If derek jeter was drafted by the pirates does he stay in pitssburg long? Winners like to win. Losers dont care as much.

  65. avatar Adam says:

What are u saying? That is a great signing! He MAKES that money at the end of his contract, not the cap hit. His cap hit is about 2.5 mil for 5 years. That is excellent!

  66. avatar JT says:

66 – his cap hit is 2.8 million. He will make 1 mill this year. Not bad for a guy coming off one inconsistent season and then last season, when he played half the season and scored all of 5 goals.

Its an excellent contract because we are Isles fans and we like Kyle. The rest of the leagues doesn’t see it as excellent. I’m sure some giggled.

  67. avatar joe b says:

I see Snow getting one free agent forward who won’t score more than 20 goals this year.

I see him making another move like Wisniewski, who couldn’t handle being a top guy and was dumped for another draft pick.

I see us not making the playoffs and a lot of bloggers and fans saying NEXT year is the year and talking about how awesome Snow is.

    Hope I’m wrong.

  68. avatar Tom from PA says:

    Build the arena.

    Keep on building the team.

    We’ll be alright. Patience.

  69. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

Love the site – have a great summer CB and only 22 days till the draft!!

  70. avatar Shoeless Joe Jackson says:

#55 – this isn’t fantasy hockey, Snow is trying to build a team. You need to look at more than goals scored to evaluate a player. He’s young and getting better. Solid signing.

  71. avatar gary91922 says:

Love what we have done so far!!!!

I still say that the organization (maybe not the smartest hockey move) needs a BIG splash to capture some headlines.

1 – SIGN ZACH PARISE!!! If nothing else force the Devils into a situation that will cap strap them.

2 – Sign a physical solid stay at home d-man to compliment Mark Steit

3 – SIGN JT LONG TERM

My fear is that Charles is hedging his bet as much as possible in the eevent he needs to sell or move, that if NIFA gives it to him from behind!!

  72. avatar PotvinRocks says:

I’d love to keep in touch over twitter but I was blocked for some reason but unlike you I’m not pass it. It bothers me.
The Islanders and St Louis have both done a good job of locking up their RFA’s this playoffs. The Okposo and Grabner signings are also genius because if it doesn’t work here another big market team would take love to take a contract that has a low cap number. I worry when I hear that the Islanders are looking to lock someone up “Long Term”. Joe Thorton said that long term is 3 years for him. And 5 years in DP’s contract is an albertross around the Islanders neck.
I expect Bailey and Comeau to get 2 to 3 year deals before July 1. I wonder if Wihart is going to hold out for a one way contract.
Will Adam Larsson fall in the Islanders lap? Will they make the selection like they didn’t do last year with Cam Fowler?

  73. avatar JimfromStJames says:

Thanks CB, I have not been to any of the major sports site since this site came along ( except when you are guesting, AOL, NY Times Etc. )

My wife and I play a game while watching the playoffs, she knows hockey, and follows the team enough to know some of the names…

But we play “Know Your Former Islander” where I point out a player to her and she guesses what year they left the team, how they left the team, and who they might have been traded for.

She was doing good with all the Tampa guys, but I lost here at Torres last night, although she recognized Tamby… LOL

I realized last night. that we had not watched a game w/o a former Isle playing.

  74. avatar bergie says:

I loved the KO and Grabs signings. Just be realilistic. When they signed Parenteau way before the trade deadline, it sent a big message that we’re going with the same top lines. Maybe they add a veteran as you mention up front and on D, but it won’t be a major move

  75. avatar Art says:

The poster above has it right. These are good moves but the details of the Coliseum agreement is the real big news to come up next. Little else matters unless they sign a GREAT player.

  76. avatar BryanG says:

Thanks for writing here s much in the offseason and breaking stories and writing original stuff. Seems like most of the blogs out there just link or copy and paste the big dogs’ articles. Lots of blogs out there, most of them rot.

  77. avatar Lenny says:

Nothing gets me more pumped than a positive article on PB even if you make it even-handed by pointing out what still needs to be done.

Your tweets go straight to my phone. My only complaint is that there aren’t enough of them.

Let’s raise a glass to an incredible Islanders season! Build it!

  78. avatar Blizzard says:

….most certainly it has been a great spring. However, they need to make some noise and get a player to generate enthusiasm. That would make the summer great!

  79. avatar st4rr says:

now all we need is to get rid of DP. Montoya and Poulin FOREVER!

  80. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

Once we lock up JT and the arena I will be excited. Still this is all good news except about you taking time off (KIDDING)!
You deserve time off, just don’t get burned on the beach. Growing up on LI, I know how awesome Jones Beach and Point Lookout are! Thanks so much for the great blogs and videos, etc. It just keeps getting better. More success to you and the family!!!!!
    GOD BLESS!

  81. avatar Joe says:

I do think Garth will make a run at Paraise. If we signed him, that would create alot of buzz and excitement on this team. I do think it would somewhat influence the vote as well come AUG 1st. The rest is up to NIFA. CB, thanks for all you do, this is the first site I go to when I come home from work and start to unwind. What do you think the probability is that the Isles make a run at Paraise?

  82. avatar Chris says:

Hopefully we can make some improvements in the oiff season. I am concerned that the goaltending could keep us out of playoff contention, but so far it’s been a positive Spring.

  83. avatar Dan C. says:

There’s no way the Isles will sign Parise to an offer sheet, especially if they haven’t yet signed JT to an extension. I think either a good forward that is the calibre of Brooks Laich or Jussi Jokinen or (better yet) a much-needed top 4 defenseman along the lines of Kevin Bieksa or Christian Ehrhoff is a more realistic hope for free agency. If they get one of those players, manage to grab Adam Larsson or Sean Couturier in the draft and that draft pick plus Niederreiter and de Haan all legitimately make the team next season, the Isles can really make a quantum leap in on-ice talent.

  84. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

Chris – a big thank you from Jersey for making this the best site for all things Islanders. In our busy lives and the daily challenges we all face, thanks for keeping the die-hards connected. Best to you and your family this summer.

  85. avatar isles14 says:

I WANT BIEKSA!! But I’m not holding my breath hahaha.

  86. avatar Nassau Veterans Memorial Casino says:

Finally there is hope … Should be an interesting summer to say the least …

I won’t lose any sleep if JT isn’t locked up long term before the start of the season … And like MG and KO he’s already gone on record stating his commitment to the NYI …

Keep up the great work CB!

  87. avatar MarioGazz says:

CB please do not leave us for long periods of time. I need it bad and I cant get it anywhere else. You going away for little stretches is the worst news we’ve had lately. I guess thats good. Have a great summer and hope you have plenty to write about.

  88. avatar admin says:

Ooh, MarioGazz…I had no idea you felt that way. LOL. Thanks, buddy.

Didn’t say for sure I’ll be away for stretches, just that it’s a possibility. I can assure everyone that it’s not “time off.” Life stuff is all.

Despite Brian Compton’s wishes (he drinks a little), I don’t see an offer sheet from the NYI for Zach or anyone else.

Bryan G (76) Appreciate the kind words, but there are several good Islanders blogs and by now everyone knows that Lighthouse Hockey is the most active and the best.

Potvin Rocks (72) I apologize for the confusion. It certainly wasn’t for the reason you tweeted about. Anyway, I fixed it and now if you still want to follow and read my inane tweets, it’s taken care of. Sorry again.

Nice to read the cautious tones and all the enthusiasm. That’s what the offseason is all about…CB

  89. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I’d like to see JT signed prior to the start of FA for the message to FA’s or RFA who may need to approve a trade.

I don’t see a ton in FA that I like, it’s a down year. Brian Compton’s Brook Laich is a great suggestion at W. Bieksa (sorry Botta) would be the best UFA d-man, Erskine maybe would be the other d-man in UFA but I think they’ll need to pull a trade for the 2nd.

If they do that, resign who they need, dump the guys who don’t fit moving forward for assets, use this great draft of big skilled, mean d-men to fix the teams biggest organizational weakness, it will have been a wonderful summer on LI.

  90. avatar The New Isles GM says:

This is the summer where the slow and steady rebuild speeds up dramaticly. I give Garth credit for remaining patient through the past three years while finding gems like Grabner and Moulson. We’ve had solid drafts for the most part and still find ways to sit at the salary cap floor. I believe landing a guy like Parise will be the icing on the cake for Tavares to sign long term. Not only will he get a year to play with Parise, it shows the Isles are committed to Tavares in not just giving him 1st line minutes. It’s about surrounding him with the right talent to bring out the very best in him. There’s plenty of talent in the NHL Tavares could explore in the future, but why wait and see if he does. It’s Garth’s responsibility to make sure he builds this team correctly and creates a locker room that believes in one another.

Oh, an example you say? See: Detroit Red Wings

  91. avatar jon from nj says:

This is all for naught if they don’t get an arena. Plain and simple. Cynical Islander fans resides here.

  92. avatar Dzruggie says:

CB I have to hand it to you as you have kept this blog current, interesting and allowed a constant forum for us fans to banter about. I assume there is some kind of livelihood for you in this but never the less, it is awesome that you show passion, hold coherent interviews and again allow for feedback. And for the record this is the far better blog! Lighthouse while being up to date, has to have the worst writing style I have ever seen. Anyway, thanks for your time and everything you provide for us!

  93. avatar Dzruggie says:

Interesting talk about Bieska on CBC (Sirius – XM) today. While stating that of their 3 UFA D-Men, Bieska is the one guy they need to keep. But the interesting comment came from someone speculating on his agent as the host (Jeff Merek) was saying perhaps he gives a hometown discount, but an agent is going to say you had your chance. That being said and assuming all money is equal (from the many teams that will be bidding), I am not sure how the Isles would land him unless they go to a crazy over the top Beltran type contract and completely over pay.

  94. avatar Islanders Fan in NJ says:

Thanks CB! We’ll just have to satisfy our thirst for Islanders news in another fashion while you’re gone. You’ve been a fantastic source for unbiased news, and your hard work and dedication to not only the Islanders but hockey news in general is greatly appreciated! Enjoy your summer!

  95. avatar Brian Compton says:

    2 things, folks:

    1) I do drink a little.

    2) John Erskine is signed in WSH for three more years.

CB, see you at the bar.

Yeah, but your boy Brooks Laich is not! Ha! Thanks, Brian…CB

  96. avatar robert says:

while there is hopeful optomism, there is also the realty that so much more has to be done this off season to say the isles are legit playoff contenders and not pretenders. while everyone would like to see j.t. signed long term, i do understand waiting til at least after the aug. 1st. vote to see what will happen. moving forward til then, lets see if wang opens his wallet to attempt to sign the free agent help they need. all the other teams in the toughest division in hockey will do what they can to improve and i am sure they will all get even better. will snow do a couple of smart trades as well? if all is status quo and wang and snow spend nothing and do nothing and say we will continue with the slow and steady rebuild only not to mention fantasize that d.p. is their top goalie for at least 10 more years, then new building or not, the only excitement every year will be only in june at the draft party since the isles will allways pick from one to five.

  97. avatar Dom says:

I’m going to give you all the most “cautious tone”. Take a good look at what is happening in Atlanta. Don’t for one minute lose your focus. This arena issue MUST be settled, the future of the Islanders on Long Island depends on it.

  98. avatar Cold Spring Harbor says:

Great to see the accounting guy get a nice mention. Artie is and always has been a class act. I remember that first return to the playoffs in April 2002 and there was Artie working the season ticket holder box office line, great guy. Thanks Chris.

  99. avatar Onesinceforty says:

If you don’t want teams cherry picking our top talent in a few years when they are restricted free agents then I would suggest to you that us tendering offers to other RFA’s is a very bad idea. This type of thing would not end well. I have always felt it is somewhat not gentleman like to make those offer sheets. Of course what Gregoire and Whathisname did is not very sporting either.

  100. avatar Lean Cugine says:

Garth needs to add some players still. Im not drooling yet, and you CB-need to get an Isles show on SNY. Thanks for the threads!

  101. avatar Jake says:

CB, I’ve been trying to contact you for months. Is there any more room for advertising on IslandersPointBlank.com? Your coverage of this team is second to none. You show a great respect, admiration and affection for this club and its fans and the feeling is mutual at least on the fans’ side. Thanks for everything you do. And again, I’m sorry my dad asked that question at that presser back in ’96. He shouldn’t have done that.

  102. avatar Jzruggie says:

Hey Dzruggie: I love you like a brother …just not one of mine :)
I agree Bieksa won’t come here …not sure I would want a guy fresh off a cup run anyway. I agree with #99, RFA’s not a good idea. I really don’t see us making a big splash on a UFA either. The team is 5 years removed from its last big gamble (the DP contract), and since then the only roll of the dice has been Ryan Smyth (not a huge gamble). I doubt Garth will risk the rebuild at this point in the process by trading away assets.
Look for the team to lock up Bailey and Comeau …I would guess for 3 years each; sign a tough 5 or 6 Dman; sign a Nate Thompson type 4th line center (or Konopka on a 1 year deal); bring in Nino and maybe deHaan; and the team is anywhere from 5-10 in the conference.

One caveat, and I am not sure how this happens, but there HAS to be a resolution of the DP mess. If he needs to be the backup until the new CBA in 2012, fine. If the team is going to go with him as the number one in the hope (prayer) that he regains his form, move them down to 10-15th in the conference. I think if the team commits to a solid team defense concept, Montoya can do the job as #1.

CB, thanks for everything you do!!

  103. avatar Jim Clark says:

3 months and a week until the start of the season. The waiting is the hardest part.

  104. avatar Jake says:

As for next year’s club I think we’ll be closer to that 10th spot in the conference. I don’t see us making the playoffs yet but an improvement definitely.

  105. avatar Booten says:

Great article as always. Really felt like I was in your head at times reading it. I’m very excited for this summer and looking forward to your coverage!

  106. avatar Claude says:

Sorry Garth. Just signed a 2.8 million 3rd or fourth line energy guy in ko. Should have been dealt so they could have signed legit power forward. What is it, nobody wants to play on the island? Why can’t he find/sign the next Ryan Kesler. Players like that change franchises.

  107. avatar 93 Miracle says:

#57 If the Islanders signed Joel Ward AND Erskine id be freaken ecstatic! First off Erskine is the PERFECT defensemen for us. Big, strong, Shut down guy that puts fear into big time forwards. I have been calling for Joel Ward since march. While I think he will stay in nashville or maybe go to a team like washington that could use his ever SO CLUTCH play in the post season, I would love if he signed here. Imagine having a guy on your 4th maybe 3rd line that turns into a goal scorer come playoff time(has the past 2 playoffs). Those would be amazing signings. islanders dont need a lot on offense. We have a good amount of offense and have to keep going through some growing pains with Nino and Bailey (part of the rebuild). Ward would be perfect and so would Erskine. Those 2 signings and we are in the playoffs. I dont know why you would not be going bannanas with those players coming here!

  108. avatar gary says:

They need to overpay a FA YOUNG proven upcoming star in order to show seriousness-They certainly have the cap room-I DO like the attitude, signing of young propects that were drafted, investing in the future program yet we still have the same team for next year so far–I also think we make the playoffs next year as long as the Poulin/Montoya team is healthy and performs

  109. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Holy cow thank you. I don’t feel bad about myself anymore.

  110. avatar Erik says:

Chris, can we expect some depth signings for next season? We need to sign an Iggulden or Kurtis Mclean types. A guy I keep talking about is Andrew Gordon, a guy who’s been buried in the WSH organization. I feel he’s a guy could have a Moulson or Parenteau impact.

  111. avatar greg h says:

Sean bergenhiem is a 3rd or 4th line energy guy, not KO. You sir are wrong.

  112. avatar Jersey Jerry says:

Is this a stretch or you think there’s a chance they could trade for and sign Brad Richards? I read today that he’s officially on the block. What would it cost, and would they be allowed to negotiate first.

  113. avatar Dzruggie says:

Brad Richards is an UFA…are you talking about Mike Richards from Philly?

  114. avatar Alex says:

All the best with whatever will be keeping you from the blog Chris, thanks for another year of fantastic coverage. Anyway, we really don’t need another goaltender. We’ve got young prospects, a prime-aged guy who has the potential for greatness (montoya), and then there’s always Nabokov who, despite the possible rust, is a great goaltender. I’d rather Brooks Laich than Brad Richards for a third line center.

  115. avatar Jersey Jerry says:

I understand Brad Richards is an UFA, but Dallas is going to trade his rights to someone before July 1st, it’s probably not worth doing for us because he probably won’t sign here.

  116. avatar Irish Isle says:

There is only two ways this spring could get better:
    1. Ditch DP
    2. Bring Petrov Stateside

  117. avatar SCLI says:

In order for the Isles to make this New Arena a reality and show LI that they are serious in their Rebuild. The Islanders have to make a big splash this summer. It’s one thing for Nassau County to force out an Underachieving, Misguided, Mismanaged, Perennial Cellar Dweller, Red Haired Step Child of a NHL Franchise. Its a whole other story to kick out a Rising Star, Perennial Front Page News maker, Soon to be Playoff Contending, A$$ kicking, Fan favorite, Star Studded NHL Franchise. Here is where the Summer Splash must Begin. Draft Day, Move UP to #1. Make Edmonton an offer that they can’t refuse and draft Ryan Nugent Hopkins. The Islanders will be set down the middle for the next 10 years. JT, RNH and Frans Neilsen. That may eventually become the BEST core of Centermen in the NHL. From most accounts. RNH is NHL ready. So how do we get this kid. It will take some sacrifice but in the big picture it will be worth it. Hand over our 1st rd pick. A 2nd rd pick (we have two) and a 5th rd picks(also have two). And here’s where it gets a bit hard. Josh Bailey being a natural center and possibly needing a change of scenery after being miss developed is Odd Man out. In addition to our #5 overall pick, a 2nd rd pick, a 5th rd pick & Josh Bailey. Offer the Oiler’s a puck moving defender. Either prospect Aaron Ness, Jack Hillen or both. Can you imagine seeing RNH dishing off to Michael Grabner for the next 10 years??? And as our 2nd line!!!! Not Done yet. Then when Free Agency begins. Make Zack Parise an offer that He cant refuse and the Devils can’t match. That my friends is making a Splash. With the Isles making Front page news, winning hockey games and filling the building. It will be extremely difficult to justify refusing them a new Arena. IMHO **** Brian, you are correct about Erskine. Although he is still listed on some sites as an UFA he has been signed by the Caps. For 2 years at 1.5 mil not 3 yrs.

  118. avatar Dan C. says:

I really don’t get all the Okposo-bashing being done here.

@ #106 Claude: Were you this high on Kesler 3-4 years ago when he was the age that Okposo is now?
