SNY COUNTDOWN TO PICK 5: STEVE SPOTT
Kitchener GM/HC on his kids Landeskog and Murphy

by Chris Botta on June 23rd, 2011 at 11:45 am

11:45 pm: Imagine Gabriel Landeskog on the wing of John Tavares for over a decade. (Must. Trade. Up.) Or the electrifying Ryan Murphy quarterbacking the offense. The Islanders like both.

From what I read Landeskog has all the intangibles on and off the ice. He’s a big power forward and from the interviews ive seen of him, he’s great off the ice and looks like he has his head on straight. I’d love to have this kid on my team for years.

  2. avatar A Real hockey fan says:

.. Nice interview and we can only dream if he slides down to 5th but it doesnt sound it, but we can wish.

.. I say grab the most talented player regardless of position, keep acumalting young talent and let the chips fall, but i never worry about D, Winger or Centerman, imo grab the BEST player at 5, case closed!

.. Great job with the draft coverage and site CB, really good stuff, keep it up brother :-)

  3. avatar Petey Pete says:

Does anyone know if Snow and Cairns have interviewed Landeskog yet or plan on doing so? In my personal opinion, he’s the top prospect in this draft in terms of “most likely to succeed”.

He’s the only kid in this draft I hope Garth Snow would seriously consider trading up for. I share CB’s assessment that Tavares and Landeskog will singlehandedly end the rebuild (in a good way). I hope Garth pulls the trigger.

  4. avatar islesfan999 says:

It really sucks we had to win meaningless games at end of year!

  5. avatar shlo says:

Obviously there are many excellent prospects this year, making the GM job tough. If the organization wants to go D than the choice is Larson, Hamilton, Murphy , whoever is available at 5- shut down D or Offensive D. I’ll probably go with Murphy over Hamilton and find a shut down D thru free agency.
Landeskog will not be available to us at offense, there are enough great players available for first line.

  6. avatar Islanders1932 says:

I heard rumors that the Islanders might trade up. I’m wondering if that is because they have their eyes set on Landeskog.

  7. avatar Jzimm says:

Chris, you are very respectful during your interviews, and to me, that’s a big part of why they’re so fun to listen to.

I like knowing that we’ll be drafting a very strong prospect. I’m very antsy to see what happens in about 33 hours. After every interview, “I want that guy.” – It’s very much a stronger draft year than initially advertised. Which is good for the Islanders, because it was very important that at some point during one of these seasons, that had to finish strong. They had a real good second half last season. Very important.

For those who want to gripe about “meaningless points” – It’s really much ado about nothing. In a draft like this, the best player is likely to be a player other than the 1st overall pick. We’ll get a strong player.

  8. avatar Michael Pastore says:

Michael: sorry, but none of this is happening. NEXT! CB

    CB,
Direct question for you. Would this trade work to move up in the draft.
Our 5th overall pick, our 2 2nd round picks Bailey and Parenteau to move up to #2 and pick up Landeskog. Then overpay for Brad Richards and pick him up as a FA.
Would could one of the best top 3 line combos in all of Hockey.

    1st line Tavares, Moulson, Okposo
    2nd line Richards, Grabner, Nino/Landeskog
    3rd line Neilsen, Comeau, Nino/Landeskog

If Okposo does not produce right away you move him to the 3rd line and whichever of Nino/Landeskog is playing better you move to the 1st line. This would put our forwards with the elite teams in hockey. Is that enough to give up to move to the #2 pick or would the Islanders have to also give up next years 1st pick also?

  9. avatar Winning says:

My biggest concern is isles draft based on players personality, as the isles are run like “entourage”, who will wine, dine, entertain dipietro, snow, wang the most.

  10. avatar Ethan K says:

I’m not ruling out the possibility of Landeskog falling to 5. Seriously. If RNH goes first, Colorado takes Larsson, Florida takes Huberdeau for offense, and the Devils like someone else a lot like Couturier, Murphy, Hamilton, then he could be there. It might sound crazy, but if you think about it, we thought it was a bit crazy to think Fowler would be available at 5, and you’d be Milbury-crazy had you said he wouldn’t go top-10. So excited to watch the draft from Nassau Coliseum tomorrow!!

  11. avatar Steve J says:

Considering Pierre said in his interview the other day that Landeskog and Larsson were the 2 most NHL ready players in the draft, I am hopeful but not realistic we draft 1 of these guys. If not, allow whoever we pick to develop properly in Juniors and then the AHL. Don’t repeat what happened with Josh Bailey.

  12. avatar Brian G says:

Landeskog should be the Isles #1 priority!
If they have to trade up similar to the Schenn trade with toronto, do it…trade a 2nd this year & a 3rd in 2012…sounds like he has the Peca intangibles & does stuff the Isles don’t have…please no Hamilton unless you trade back…

Please no Kevin Conolly this year making picks either, enough of him already…

  13. avatar BanGarth says:

Wishful thinking , not happening. Garth will go with the safe pick and grab a d man.

  14. avatar gary91922 says:

Finally an interview regarding the guy I want more than anyone in this draft… Landeskog!!!

Garth, do what ever it takes to get him. CB, I know you say it’s impossible but given the fact the Col has two high 1st round picks why would they not trade doen to #5 if the price was right?

    What is the right price?

Given the amount of talent in the top 5 do you think Col would take thr #5, next years #1, and a 2nd this year for the #2. I would be willing to throw in something else.

Just as good a chance that that next years #1 pick for the Isles could be anywhere from #12-#18. Not many teams get 2 1st rounders in back to back years.

PLEASE GARTH>>> Do what it takes to get Landeskog, he will win us a cup one day…

  15. avatar Anthony from Commack says:

CB! another great segment!! Thank you! I have been shouting Landeskog for the longest time but I am putting him off my radar. I just do not see him slipping to 5 just like his coach said. Unless we do something to move up which unfortunately (ahhh) I don’t see happening, the only time we’ll see landeskog on the island is when he’s wearing different colors. I’m on the Couturier bandwagon. Lets bring him in. Thanks for everything CB – I ALMOST WANT TO CALL OUT SICK TOMORROW BECAUSE IM GOING TO BE DOING NOTHING BUT CLICKING ON THESE SITES ALL DAY lol GO ISLES!!!!!

  16. avatar Anthony from Commack says:

One last thing, sorry I didnt include it in my last post… CB – Do you, in your personal opinion, with all the rumors aside and before the draft even starts (I know its tough to answer but please gimmie something because like everyone else i value your opinion), believe that Snow will try and move up to grab Landeskog?

  17. avatar JS43 says:

The Islanders should stay put and draft at the #5 slot. With that being said Garth needs to take Couturier, we have enough young defensman who will become very good players in the future Hamonic,Wyshart and De Hann.

  18. avatar LIT says:

Can someone please pass the draft coolaid over.. thanks!

  19. avatar tom in nj says:

“I heard rumors that the Islanders might trade up.”

I hope not. Just sit at 5 and wait it out for the best you can get. JMO.

  20. avatar Frans Dish says:

Landeskog is built perfectly for the playoffs. The teams that win in the playoffs have a great mix of high end skill and grit. If he was paired with Tavares our team would be set for years to come in the playoffs. Tavares, KO, and Landeskog all display leadership, grit, and skill. If he is there at 3 with Florida coming up you have to try and pry him away from them. They would definitely listen to offers. Possibly our 5th pick, 2nd round pick (50th), and de Haan. Might not be enough but, you got to try.

  21. avatar Big Van Vader says:

I’m hoping Landeskog will be there…but he prob won’t. Garth trade up? Major miracle.

  22. avatar Mike L says:

I wouldn’t mind Couturier or Strome at 5

  23. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

Love reading these posts…I want Hamilton, I want Huberdeau, I want Strome, I love Larsson, I love Landeskog, lets offer 34,50,63, next years 1st and 2nd and 2013 1st, 2nd and 3rd to move up. You guys are all nuts, and I love it cause its Christmastime for hockey nuts!! Bring it, and be satisfied with whatever Garth does! Unless he moves back to #15 lol…I feel a very big evening tomorrow on the horizon

  24. avatar greg h says:

at least we can speak about the draft for 5 minutes and not worry about the arena development. Some of the trade scenarios are ridiculous around here. Its a bummer we are not at number 4 like we should be, but we will draft a good player, whether they are ready this year or in 2 years down the road. It will be exciting either way.

  25. avatar Blizz says:

I dont know if you can comment on this CB but I feel the need to vent. There is a seriouse lack of coverage from local media outlets (Thank god for Islander country we have this blog) As Newsday has not one article about the Islanders a day before the draft, (They had a Ranger article).

There lamebrain website has nothing but negative commentary regarding the Coliseum, also News 12.

Dolan is a prick and the only reason I have cablevision is so every now and then when they feel like throwing us a bone I can watch an HD Islander game. Im done Im going FIOS!!!!

  26. avatar streit02 says:

I’ve been imagining Landeskog alongside Tavares last year rooting for Col and Fla to win everygame and watching them come up empty everytime. This kid is everything this team needs. He would be the final piece. Other holes could be filled via minor trades and Free agency. Only way the Isles have a shot is if Colorado doesnt take him. This is the major reason the draft lottery hurt us.
Has there ever been a prospect that was as highly touted as Landeskog with similar offensive #’s? His #’s pale in comparison with the other top forwards available. I guess, just as you cant teach skill, you cant teach heart and desire.

  27. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

This whole stretch has been like the day before the Kentucky Derby. You read a column and say, “I like that horse”, then turn the page, read another column and say, “Yeah, he’s the one!” etc, etc, etc.

    Here’s my 2 cents. Anyone who isn’t “Scisson-esque!”

  28. avatar Isles Fan in VA says:

Take the best forward available. We need to sign a top FA D-man (Bieksa?) to get to the cap floor. Add second line forward (Laich?) to get some grit and leadership.

    Then 2011 is a step forward. 2012 is playoffs. 2014 is ??????????????

CB – I’ve said it numerous times. This is the best thing on the internet. Your coverage this week has been exceptional. I need my IPB!

  29. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Jez, everytime you do one of these things I want the Isles to draft the potential hockey star. I know he gets compared to Richards a lot but from this interview I was envisioning Peter Forsberg.
I’m sticking to my guns and staying with Larsson, Strome, then Hamilton being my hopeful picks at 5.

  30. avatar AFIsle says:

this years 1st round pick with bailey and nabakov for the 2nd pick.

  31. avatar quez says:

Let’s find a way to rescue 2 very talented players from their awful jerseys that they have been forced to wear in juniors. Make those two Kitchner RANGERS into proud N.Y. ISLANDERS! Somehow, make it happen and bring in Gabe and Ryan! Wishful thinking, yes…but i’m just all caught up in the draft hype!

  32. avatar Islesfan3 says:

People need to relax i would love to get him. But i dont wanna trade the 5th pick and bailey and say nabakov or sotin like that for this kid. I only wanna trade the pick and bailey for an established player like a nash parise weber etc… Take the pick at 5 or trade it for a player we know what were gonna get.

  33. avatar TimQ says:

Of all the prospects discussed so far the only one I can’t support is Murphy. He might be a great talent but we need size on the d-line and he doesn’t have it

  34. avatar Ray says:

it sounds like Florida told the coach if hes there at 3 hes the pick….anyone of the top 6-7 guys are potential studs no need to move moutains to move up the only move i would make is if Larsson is at 5 I would trade Baily and the 5th to WNP for Bogo and the 7th then take Strome or Couturier…

  35. avatar Lean Cugine says:

And with the 5th pick in the draft the Islanders select….. Kevin Connolly?!?!

  36. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Landeskog is amazing! Exact kind of guy you win with and the thought of him, Nino, and Martin pounding away at the oppossition while Okposo adds pressure, Grabs burns teams with his speed and the rest of the boys are free to do their thing is exciting but really doubtful he is there at 5.

Per the coach doesn’t seem like the Isles are focused on Murphy which is great news because Isles don’t need another small d-man or player for that matter.

  37. avatar 19inarow says:

I’d rather have Moulson. He’s already proven himself on multiple fronts. And he’s CONSISTENT.

  38. avatar BIGSAVE77 says:

I love your trade proposal Ray it would be excellent if it were to happen. I think Landeskog is a very good player but I would not sell the farm for him. I don’t think you can go wrong by just waiting for Couturier to fall into our laps. If we could move up with one of our seconds and a third this year or next I would be o.k. with it but I wouldn’t be trading both seconds or next years first for him it is just too much to pay when you can get either Couturier or Strome for free. Great work Chris and I can’t wait for tomorrow. GO ISLES GO!

  39. avatar BILL says:

there is now way Garth will land Landeskog when Lou is picking prior to us. consider the top 4 picks gone. lets just be glad snow will not draft a Dman and take the next best player. I will watch this draft being pessimistic, that way i wont be dissapointed when garth makes a stupid selection. did you see that clown at the awards diss the isles on the lack of attendance and all the NHL players laugh? what a disgrace. that only reminded them not to sign with the isles on july 1 hahah. so sad.

  40. avatar Islesfan_in_Vancouver says:

didn’t everyone on this blog say they wanted strome yesterday?

It’s not worth trading up to take him when a legit nhl prospect is available at 5. The Isles don’t have enough depth to trade multiple picks/prospects or a roster player to move up 3 spots. Stay at 5 and take the best player available.

  41. avatar streit02 says:

I would trade the #5 and all of our 2nd rounders for Landeskog. Those 2nd rounders dont matter at this point. If he’s our guy then do what it takes to get him. Im not saying that is a likely or possible trade scenario. Im just saying i wouldnt be concerned about crapshoot 2nd round picks if we have a chance to take Landeskog.

  42. avatar Bob E says:

As long as we dont draft a dman for Size wiht first pick. Garth has been doing incredible job. He has been best GM since Bill Torrey. Slow and Steady then add the big name to win the cup.

Chicago – Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook drafted – Brought in CAMPBELL on defense
Anaheim – perry, Getzlaf, penner then brought in Pronger and Niedermeyer.

ou dont trade guys like bailey, you grow them then go get your firepower to contend once the youth is ready.

  43. avatar Strummer's Army says:

Why have posters here been slagging Kevin Connolley the past couple days? Nice guy, good actor, and ISLANDER FAN who helps to promote the team in a positive fashion when most of the rest of the worst was trashing them fairly and unfairly.

  44. avatar Mike says:

Would have had the 3rd pick if not for Hamonic scoring meaningless goal vs Pitts on 4/11/11

  45. avatar Jmig15 says:

General Garth Stand”PAT”ton is in full effect.
