Bailey, Kabanov, Carter, Hamonic, contender? tix?

  1. avatar Jeff from Smithtown says:

We will not get into the playoffs with DP. As Brian said he will not be bought out. Is there any chance we can land Corey Schneider or Tuka Rask . Both of these guys are number 1 goalies but will be back ups for the next few years .

  2. avatar mike"thesuitcase"sillinger says:

i think its best hamonic starts the season in bridgeport definetly cant hurt even if he only plays a month there

  3. avatar Joe says:

Great stuff, hay fathers day CB, Hamonic was a steal! Gotta give Snow credit on that selection, also keep the 5th pick, take Hamilton and keep building. Hopefully the bond issue and all the politics that go with it does not distract this team or take away from their young talent.

  4. avatar Frans Dish says:

I think Travis proved he belonged last year. Until he shows any signs of regression in his game I don’t see a problem with having up. Mark Streit is going to be a great mentor to all these young d-men coming into our squad now. Still think we need to sign one top 4 D-men via FA but, we should be pretty solid all around team as soon as this year or next year.

  5. avatar Corey says:

I think the Junior team in Montreal moved to a smaller city, so that is probably better for Kabanov to not be in a big city. I believe that he is becoming a more mature person and that it is helping with his on ice production. I feel he can make the Islanders some time soon, and we will be happy and lucky we took him in the third round

  6. avatar sammlo says:

    5th, Same. Happy Father’s Day!

  7. avatar DRIVE45 says:

STAY AWAY FROM JEFF CARTER. BIG TIME TROUBLE!

  8. avatar Keith says:

CB, with the NHL contract max. at 50, where do the islanders stand and with all recently drafted prospects in the system and do you see them having any issues in the future? Second, would it make sense for the Isles to package their two 2nd round picks this year to move up into a late first round pick to help improve the quality of the prospect and give them greater flexibility down the road?
    Thanks

  9. avatar robert says:

i think bailey can be a productive nhl player but not here. since wang and snow ruined him, i think its best for a fresh start somewhere else. the one time i think the isles should stay put at five unless its a deal too good to pass up, i get a bad feeling that snow and wang will pull a mad mike move and get a stiff in return. what would make sense would be to trade bailey and their outstanding goalie d.p. and move up to the number 3 pick.

  10. avatar JT says:

Brian and Chris- you guys are both being way to rational in these segments LOL

Suggesting Bailey deserves and will get more time. Being honest about the DP situation and how hes not goin anywhere. Ruling out Carter.

You could probably get even more hits on Point Blank if you dumbed it up and led people on to BS.

I respect how you do it. Thanks for the week of videos. Very good. Hope you have some more in store for the draft.

  11. avatar bergie says:

I don’t disagree with anything you said this week – even when you two disagreed with each other!

  12. avatar Ny711 says:

Compton said it all. No matter what we do, nothing matters if Snow doesn’t settle the goaltending. Kinda figures he’s a former goalie and our goaltending is a ?

  13. avatar Sean says:

Happy Fathers Day to both of you and thanks for all the Islanders talk!

  14. avatar blitz says:

I know this blog is called Point Blank for a reason. R.I.P. Clarence Clemons.

Keep up the great work. Bailey will get another year or two, I agree. Pass on Carter. Too many years and too much of a baby.

  15. avatar Matthew Carlyle says:

The Islanders have a lot of work to do over the next 2 months on and off the ice.

  16. avatar rpchief2 says:

No way does Travis go to the Bridge. Streit, AMac and Travis are by far our best Dmen

  17. avatar Joeisles says:

I like Travis a lot but he may be the next big overrated Islander. Just because he was very good most of the time last year does not mean he’s gonna be great. I think he’s a good player. For Compton to say he’s going to be great player in this town for a long time is a bit much. So are all the raves around here. I like him like I said. Good player. Maybe very good. Not going to be great or anywhere near all-star calibre. As Islander fans, we get used to thinking anyone who handles themselves well is going to be incredible. I would cool it on the hype for Hamonic.

  18. avatar bags says:

It says a lot about the state of mind of us Islanders fans that we’ve got guys like Eric writing in assuming we’re making the playoffs this upcoming year. The confidence after being one of the five worst teams in the NHL over the last four years amazes me.

We’re getting closer and getting better. Assuming playoffs next year is ridiculous.

  19. avatar Tom from PA says:

The stuff on Jeff Carter was excellent and the kind of insight that I always check this site for. Thanks to both of you.

  20. avatar NYI 16 says:

CB-With all due respect, who are you kidding? DP is done now, we are so past hoping not he will play for a long time. It’s just a matter of when Wang and Snow come to realize he is preventing the team from moving forward. They need to get rid of him now. Post #1, I agree, would love Rask or Corey Schneider.

  21. avatar bergevin says:

I’m very excited about next season and the future of our team. I loved these Interactive bits. Can’t get these anywhere else.

  22. avatar Westfall says:

The Islanders have someone on their payroll who lives near Montreal, knows a thing a two about goal scoring and can check in occasionally on Kabanov….Mike Bossy. Can Kirill have a better mentor than that? Its about time that Wang has Bossy get involved in some Hockey Ops rather than just show up at Islander Business Club events (btw, do they still have those?). Be patient with Bailey, don’t trade the 5th pick, and Hammer is here to stay. Thanks CB, Happy Father’s Day to Islanders Country.

  23. avatar nylund says:

Unrealistic for any fan to think the Islanders (with 6 goalies already) are going to be able to make a play for Schneider or Rask. Rask is still the goalie of the future in Boston. Snow doesn’t have the guts to trade a pick and a prospect for Schneider and then break Ricky and Charles’ heart. CB is just being realistic. I don’t know why people can’t accept the fact that DP is here to stay. Like CB said in the video, he will get every chance to play here until he can’t stand up anymore. Did you people not figure this out after the last two seasons? Deal with it or don’t buy tickets.

  24. avatar Battfist says:

The Isles cant give up on Bailey. I think he was rushed and showed some fear playing with the big boys. Bailey has shown some skills when on his game. He’ll come around…

As far as Hamonic- this young man has stud written all over him. He is tough as nails. And plays a solid game. I cant even imagine him starting next season in Bridgeport.

Enjoyed the insight from BC and CB.

  25. avatar Dally Mac says:

Crushed over the passing of “the Big Man” Clarence Clemons as I’m sure you are Chris.
I’m with you on Travis Hamonic, CB. It’s time to start making sure these guys are developed right like the other top teams in the league (ie) Detroit…having your players “over-ripe” is a good thing…you have your core now it’s time to slow down the development situation and do right by these kids so we don’t have another Bailey on our hands…man where would this kid be today if he was part of that WJC gold and Memorial Cup team. I’m even quite content sending Nino back to Juniors and then having him play a year in Bridgeport…ideally Bridgeport would be perfect for him now but he is not eligible…so, it is what it is.

  26. avatar Lean Cugine says:

Thanks for this-nice fathers day gift-happy fathers day!

  27. avatar CC says:

Having four of these in a week was awesome. Like someone said above, I’m counting on a big week from you, CB. How about all draft all the time, unless arena news breaks?

Stick tap to Brian Compton for getting involved.

  28. avatar Patty says:

Relieved to see I’m not the only one concerned abt Hamonic taking a little bit of a step back this season. You know the Islanders. Once Cappy sees a kid is a far better alternative than Eaton and Mottau, he’s gonna run him into the ground. The future of these kids are in Snow and Cappy’s hands. I really hope they don’t rush them. Anyone who saw Nino in the WHL Final saw he was far from a finished product. He’s still just a kid.

  29. avatar Mario says:

Very funny back and forth on Kirill the Thrill.

  30. avatar Turgeon1993 says:

We are loaded with talent. Just bring it along the right way and we will be a contender in two years.

  31. avatar Steven says:

The Wings can afford to keep the young players developing in Juniors or the Minors because they have no problem signing guys. If the Isles get a new building then maybe they can sign FA’s and be more patient with then young guys.

  32. avatar Erika says:

I like D.P., but he should be on a short lease. You can’t take a step forward with your #1 goalie that can only play a few games a year (and questionable ones at that)! Equal opportunity needed! Hamonic was our best d-man, are you guys on drugs, of course he should stay! I see lots of good things from Bailey. Seems like he has a confidence issue, but he is actually a good playmaker, a nice kid, I would not give up on him just yet. Unless it is for Parise or Weber, keep the #5 pick and take the most talented player available. One or two solid F.A. signings….and we’re off!! Thanks Brian and C.B for some good Islander talk in June! Happy Fathers Day to All!

  33. avatar IslanderFAN says:

No more worries about Kabonov playing in Montreal since the Junior have new owners and they are moving the team to Boisbriand.

  34. avatar D in Big D says:

Isles should stay @ 5 but w/ that said they cannot miss.If they drop back it should be for an established player and swap 1st picks.Cannot understand how anyone in the Isles organization can hold out hope on DP regaining form.He is spent.Isles must address the goaltending ,defense, role players w/ proven NHLers. That should enable them to remain in the hunt. Also whose to say the top teams won’t have injury whoes of their own and that in itself may help the playoff cause.A fast start sure wouldn’t hurt either.Hamonic is a keeper. Its A-mac thats overrated(he’s ok don’t get me wrong) not Travis. They must also seriously consider upgrading the talent in Bridgeport and maybe thats where Bailey needs to be for a year or 2.Winning breeds winning.I wouldn’t mind seeing A-mac,Hamonic and Hillen go down for a year but they need to be replaced w/ upgraded proven players. If Garth can accomplish this it would do wonders for everyone, fans included and wouldn’t hurt the prospect pool @ all.It would actually help their development.Lets face it all our prospects are being rushed. Also this would help in locking up JT.Kabanov should be in Bridgeport next year and stay there for 2yrs minimum.Develop, develop, develop stop the mad rush to NHL.Isles are the only team doing this and it shows. We will not win w/ kids alone.

  35. avatar Rich says:

God damn I Love these Sunday Night specials you keep giving us CB, keep up the great work!

  36. avatar Islesfan3 says:

DP is gonna be here for awhile it may be with the isles or eventually bport. I think DP still can be a big goalie that plays 55 60 reg season games and a good GAA of like 2.38 or sotin i dont know. I dont see this happening but something still makes me believe in him. We need to suppourt him like i said he isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

  37. avatar isles71 says:

We are supporting DP…with a $60 million contract! We don’t need Rask or another goalie, we have 6 already and the one who needs to work the hardest and prove himself the most, will be the one given the keys without having to earn it…that is the sad truth. Know DP, no playoffs…No DP, know hope!!!

  38. avatar The new isles gm says:

Last year, talks about Bailey going to Vancouver came up many times on XM radio….I wonder if Garth inquired about Schneider in return. We had yet to land Montoya and Poulin had just come up. Eventually Garth is going to have to take a chance on something. The trade must be a win, win on both sides. I wonder about draft day. I think they will still pick at 5 but make some sort of deal as they always do. Bailey could be a good #3 center on many teams. I’m sure Florida would take a chance on him. How about Weiss for Bailey straight up?

  39. avatar Winning says:

No team in the nhl would make the playoffs if they let rick dipietro play 25 games or more. Thats 8 less wins compared to a top 16 goalie. So 16 points thrown out the window. Simply put, wang cares more about rickys happiness then he does about the islanders, or winning. Thats a fact. If wang owned the mets and was best friends with oliver perez, perez would still be starting every 5th day. Friendship comes first.

  40. avatar jzruggie says:

CB, this stubborn insistence that DP will be here for the long term is really disappointing coming from you. The reality may very well be that the team cannot buy him out (at least for a few years), and I am fine with the fact they need to eat this mistake. But everyone here who has watched the team for ANY length of time can see DP is no longer the promising goalie he was 10 years ago.
Oh, he still has the arrogance …he is simply unable to back it up with ability. I find it hard to believe that Cappy is going to put the final stages of the rebuild in DP’s hands …it would be a disaster and will negate all the good work Garth has done in putting together a team.

CB, you made a coy little comment (something like DP ….OR someone else). I agree with Brian that if the team gets poor goaltending, the rebuild means nothing. The team, no matter how well the kids play, CANNOT afford to lose 8 of their first 10 games because of DP and his .880 save percentage and 10.33 goals against average.
CB …I don’t understand why you are being so stubbornly supportive …. I mean the team frickin banned you. SPEAK UP man!! What could they possibly do?

  41. avatar Dave says:

joeisles #17: I actually think Travis Hamonic is one of the most underrated players on the current Islanders roster.

  42. avatar CIsle says:

    - Hamonic stays. He’s the real deal.
    - Kabanov is facing a new challenge. Will be fun to see how he handles it. He’s nowhere near NHL-ready.
    - Why do folks even entertain the thought of Carter? The guy has what, 10 or 11 years left on his contract? Would anyone truly think Snow is taking on something like that, much less for someone not named Crosby or Ovechkin?
    - The team went an extraordinary route to get Bailey. It’s logical that he bears a good deal of importance in this team’s long-term plans. Bailey is not being moved in a deal that doesn’t offer a proven quantity with less questionmarks than Bailey has. Don’t know why folks think the 17 point, -27 Bogosian is a better option for this team than the Bailey we saw play his finest hockey to date over the last 30 games this past season?
    - Islander fans SHOULD be reckoning with this team to make the playoffs next season as the 7th or 8th seed. It is that point in time in this rebuilding/youth movement process.
    - The Isles are going into the season with Dipietro, Montoya, Poulin, Koskinen and Nilsson – possibly also Nabokov at camp. Until they all fail, there will not be another goalie coming in. This failure on their behalf would be dealt with in-season. Thus, consider that part of the summer planning to be a closed file.

  43. avatar sean says:

We will not win with Dp I am sorry to say for you Dp lovers out there. Look how Tim Thomas played in the finals that’s a goalie you need to win with.

  44. avatar dose says:

Giving up on Bailey would be an admission by the GM that a major maneuver of his ‘rebuild’ was a failure. Won’t happen, nor should it. That doesn’t mean he can’t be included in a trade to improve the roster, but I still think Bailey’s gonna blossom into a solid, two-way core center.
Hamonic showed no signs of being in over his head last year. None. Other than a couple of rough patches and maybe a little fatigue late in the year, which any young player might show, he looked comfortable and effective almost throughout. Some 18 or 20 year-olds are more ready than 22 or 24 year-olds. It’s like that in all sports. Hamonic is one of them.

  45. avatar claude says:

Hamonic never looked out of place, next Bieksa.
DP needs to learn how to stay within himself
Baily will never be more than a third line play making center

  46. avatar Toby says:

    Chris and Brian -

Thanks for fielding my question. You’re right, I couldn’t wait for your feedback! Section 306! I’m psyched. Circumstances were just right (pricing, core of players, 3-year old son loving the puck).

I agree with most . . . Hamonic should stay. As nice as it would be to have these younger guys marinate in juniors or the ‘A’ a la the Red Wings and some other clubs, it’s just not possible with the payroll the team wants to maintain. Remember, Bailey was a ball of fire at start of last season until he got injured. He’s getting there.

Realized as I was watching my question pop up that I blew it on mentioning where I’m from. East Northport!

Doom and gloom days are behind us. Montoya might be the next Timmy Thomas.

    Thanks again guys!

  47. avatar booboo says:

    DP is sooooooooooooooo good lookin’!

  48. avatar dave chyzer says:

    Chris,
Enjoy the show, Will it be possible to be able to maximize the video to a full screen mode?

  49. avatar UIF says:

Imo, the issue with “other goalies having a chance if DP gets hurt” is that other goalies will not want to be put in that situation. Good goalies will go to a place where they can be a number one. No one wants to be on a team where no matter how good you play, you’ll be bumped to back-up status as soon as Ricky D is healthy so he can get his reps in and start the latest comeback. The goalies you’ll get to sign on for that will be the leftovers choosing between the Islanders and Europe/KHL, or the hit-or-miss youngsters looking for an opportunity. It’s a roll of the dice at a critical position. There needs to be stability…I think at this time last year, most of us thought that by this time this year we’d have answers on DP and the goalie situation. Kind of frustrating to still be asking the question, “Can he stay healthy and return to form?” It’s been like four years of this now.

  50. avatar So What says:

This team will fail if Rick plays. The franchise will be sold and move if the arena plan does not pass.

Either one of these problems by itself is a show-stopper.

Unfortunately both of them are looking very likely if not absolutely certain to happen.

  51. avatar anthony , long beach says:

Alot of people seem to be down on D.P and with good reason. But one thing to remember is that this is the first off season that he won’t be rehabing(technically). Maybe he can prepare in a more normal off season routine and finally come back and play at a decent level. I used to be a low single digit handicap golfer until i hurt my knee. It took me over two years to get back to playing at a high level.I’m not saying rick will ever be an all-star goalie again but after my experience i am willing to be a little patient with the guy and wish him nothing but the best. After all doesn’t everyone deserve a chance to regain their form. Tim thomas was supposed to be washed up, too.

  52. avatar Wang Chung says:

How about this for a trade:
    DP for Jeff Carter

  53. avatar Lean Cugine says:

No offense but if i hear one more person talk about DP and how this time he is really gonna be 100% and make a comeback-im gonna lose my friggin mind
If DP is gonna be pulling the same crap for the next 10 years, it would hurt that much less if they move to quebec

  54. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

Bailey, the #5, and #34 for Bogosian and #7. Winterpeg does not have a 2nd round pick this year. Its not about giving up on Bailey. Its about getting a possible top pair Dman for a possible top 6 forward, and throw in the extra pick to entice. The Isles would only be “dropping” 2 slots down. DO IT GARTH!!

  55. avatar Anthony says:

CB, in regards to your comment on episode 4 regarding DP…how long, in your personal opinion, do you think DP has before he can’t stand up anymore? I have not jumped off the DP bandwagon yet, I think its horrible what has happened to him over the years, but looking forward…what do you honestly believe is a timeframe as per when the islanders have to start playing someone as a new starter? Is he in the system already or do they break out the wallet on this one? Thank you for everything!

  56. avatar Nawrockstar says:

The Bailey bashing has to stop. The guy played out of this world the first few games of the season before he got injured and finished up strong. It’s way too early to make a decision as to whether or not he was the right pick in 2008. I have faith in his development. Hamonic belongs up with the big club no questions asked. I believe that Nino could use one more year of seasoning with the Winterhawks. He is NOT NHL ready. The DP talk just annoys the heck out of me. He obviously is not regaining his form he once had, and its a Wangcrush that’s keeping him here. If he wasn’t an arrogant guy I’d sympathize with him but he definitely has worn out his welcome with the fanbase. Lets hope Montoya starts off strong. Kiril is gonna be interesting and as a 3rd round pick I love the gamble. Hopefully we can pull off a similar gamble this Saturday. Somebody that wasn’t mentioned in the Interactive week was RFA Blake Comeau. Blake is a tremendous part of this rebuild and a fine 3rd line Winger for this organization. It would be a sin if we couldn’t lock him up for the forseeable future. Now lets have a great draft (Couturier, Landeskog, Strome), get this arena done and SIGN BROOKS LAICH!!!

  57. avatar PotvinRocks says:

Brian did you read my comments on the last SNYTV. “Offense is not a problem for this team, goaltending is.” Something has to happen with DP. He has ruined the last for seasons. I hated all the talk by Scott Gordon before the season, saying we had two number one goalies. He lost his number on status in 2008, when Gaborick twisted him up in the skills competition.
Similarly I’d like to see Bailey earn the number two center spot, si Frans can be used as a checking center.
You’re not allowed to be over the cap until after July 1 so if Philly wants sign Bryz they need to move someone pre July 1

  58. avatar gary91922 says:

I think Landeskog is the pick in this years draft. He does it all and has a nasty streak to his game.

What would it take to pry the #2 from Colorado?

Would they be willing to trade the # 2 for the #5, and a 20th-25th 1st round pick? Throw in a chip or another pick as a sweetner. Do what it takes to get the #2, yes over pay for it.Snow, get creative, find out who Col likes on another team and engineer a three team deal. Grow some b@lls, make a move, be a GM!!!

Colorado would have 3 first rounders (5-11-20something and the Isles would have a monster first line.

I dont mind overpaying for the #2 because no one will remember that Snow got beat up for over paying for the #2 when this bunch hoists the cup in a few years..

  59. avatar gary91922 says:

sorry CB.. my post got cut off

The Isles can group their picks and trade up with another team to grab a low 1st rounder. They have the picks and young chips to makethis happen!!

  60. avatar Dan C. says:

Why would anyone possibly want to see Hamonic back in Bridgeport? He is one of only three legit NHL defensemen in the entire organization. And one of their other two hasn’t played in a year.

It would be pointless to trade Bailey now. No sense selling low.

If Nino doesn’t legitimately make the team this season, that pick looks even worse than it already does. Ditto de Haan.

Everyone points to how the Red Wings bring players along slowly, but, aside from the organization generally having tremendous NHL-calibre depth (except in net), none of the players they’ve brought along slowly have been high first round picks. They sure didn’t take their time bringing up Yzerman, Fedorov and Lidstrom back when the team was lousy.

  61. avatar Double Chili says:

Great next test for Kirill to take. If he can continue to develop in a bigger city/closer to a big city then we may have scored a sleeper. As CB says, if not, he was a third-rounder….

Although Jeff Carter is an Islander KILLER, he’s def not worth the time/money or difference in character he would bring. We’d also have to give in return…not gonna happen

Travis Hamonic? Did you all watch him play last year? Under developed forwards can “sneak-by” and not be exposed but this kid had everything thrown at him that you could, and handled it like a player way beyond his years. He’s on the team. He’s the next Islander Dman (aside of Streit) to make an All-Star appearance. (Not this year but soon!)

As for Bailey. I remember a decade ago or so, despite repeated efforts to forget the players Mad Mike gave away, a young islander in a fishermans jersey named Bertuzzi. Big kid, Lindros-sized. Slow to develop. Frustrating at times. Mad Mike felt the same way and sent him off to Vancouver for the aging Trevor Linden. A few years later and albeit with a great supporting cast, this slow-to-develop prospect suddenly put up 50pt+ seasons for 6 years, peaking at 97, 85 & 71, respectively. If this team is still holding onto RDP, do you really think they’re gonna give up on a healthy 1st rounder who’s shown more than a flash of great play? He was the best Islander, hands down at beginning of last season. An injury, a trip down to Bridge & a new coach were next to follow….It will take time but you will all be glad we kept him. Cant wait for the DRAFT!

  62. avatar Wang Chung says:

Islanders fans are crazy. DP is probably the worst goalie in the league. Bailey wouldn’t even be on another NHL roster expect for maybe the bottom 4 teams. DeHaan is going to be a huge bust. You can’t trade 5 picks for a guy who can’t crack on NHL roster after 3 years. #5 pick only matters if you’re a Quebec Islanders fan in 4 years.

  63. avatar Orange&Blue says:

Anyone who thinks Hamonic belongs in Bport either does not watch the NYI, is delusional, or just knows diddly squat about hockey. Hamonic and MacDonald were the most steady dmen we had last year. They went up against against other teams best lines and had plus ratings. Hamonic has Scott Stevens written all over him. Get a grip, people. This team has many problems, Hamonic is NOT one of them.

We can complain all we want about this team but there is only one problem with this team: RICK DIPIETRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is the only problem, has always been the problem, and will continue to be the problem of this team!!

We have some excellent young players. Now, we just nee some complimentary veterans to help the kids out.
