UPDATES: GILLIES, HALEY & KONOPKA
Two out of three scrappers expected to be back

by Chris Botta on June 9th, 2011 at 11:31 am

11:30 am: Here’s the latest on the Islanders’ close-knit family of fighters.

“Brother” Trevor Gillies will be back in the Islanders organization for the 2011-12 season. You do not have to be connected like Bob McKenzie to know Gillies’ signing is inevitable. Trevor will be at the Islanders’ NHL Draft Party and the club will have a “Gillies ‘Stache Station.” Of course, a team does not do something like this and then tell a player before July 1 that they’re not interested in bringing him back.

Gillies is loved by management. He will likely receive another two-way contract (like last spring). Since he could pass through waivers easily and be sent to Bridgeport, the enforcer gives Garth Snow excellent roster flexibility. He is respected by his teammates and he wins the majority of his fights at the NHL and AHL levels. In the eyes of Snow, Trevor Gillies is a keeper.

“Cousin” Micheal Haley is also scheduled to attend the club’s Draft Party. He could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and it’s hard to believe the Islanders would give the fourth-liner a one-way contract after playing just 29 NHL games.

In the most likely scenario, he will receive a bump from the $50,000 he made last year playing in the AHL on his next two-way contract. The Islanders like Haley and the feeling is mutual. He may not want to consider taking his chances by shopping his services on July 1, when he would certainly receive offers, but all of the two-way variety. Looks like Haley is staying. You could see announcements on Gillies and Haley in the next two or three weeks.

As Point Blank has written since the excitement of Ferocious Friday, barring a change of heart from management, it doesn’t appear Zenon Konopka will be back for a second season with the Islanders. If the club would have received offers better than fourth round picks at this year’s trade deadline, Konopka would have been gone sooner. As of this morning, there still had yet to be any negotiations for a new contract.

If Konopka wants to make really big bucks, he could sign with a team in the KHL as soon as he is officially free on July 1. But his preference is to play in the NHL. His prowess at the faceoff dot – Jack Capuano even had him take offensive draws in key situations last season – leadership, willingness to play hurt and desire to stand up for teammates will net him NHL offers on July 1 if the Islanders do not have a last-second change of mind. Konopka, the prodigal son, wants to stay.

Guess management wasn’t happy with Z’s ideas about the goal song… shame I agree with him.

Fox News was ripping the Aug 1st proposal this morning, I’m really hoping this passes…

  2. avatar PA,islanders says:

all i got to say is damm, i hope there a change and big z stays

  3. avatar Big Boy says:

Keep Haley…Ehh on Gillies…And so long Konopka

  4. avatar 7thWoman says:

Bang on, on all accounts. Although I think Shakey will have to try and hide that target on the back of Gillies jersey this coming season. sigh.

  5. avatar alan says:

    Moulson-Tavares-?
    Okposo-Nielsen-Grabner
    Comeau-Bailey-Nino
    Martin-CIZIKAS-Haley

    Sorry Zenon?

I’m still hesitant to put P.A. on the top line, hopefully, a trade for Jeff Carter is imminent

  6. avatar Prof says:

Why would the Isles keep someone like Gillies, who is guaranteed to be suspended and not a tough veteran with face-off abilities like Konopka?

Garth’s forte seems to be contract negotiations and NOT talent appraisal.

If it went down like CB suggests, I will be disappointed.

  7. avatar Brian says:

Big picture, none of these guys really matter too much. Haley is the best keeper of the three in my opinion, at least he has a little skill and he’ll be alright to have back.

Gillies does nothing for me, the advertising of him is kind of a joke.

Konopka would of been alright to bring back but I won’t lose any sleep over him leaving. Guys like him can be replaced interally with guys like Haley.

  8. avatar BabyBear says:

I don’t get how you don’t re-sign a real team guy like Z. I guess Garth got tired of guys sticking up for each other.

  9. avatar Danielle says:

I’ll be really disappointed to see Konopka go. I would much rather have him here than Gillies, although I like Gillies as well. But Konopka is just so much more useful.

  10. avatar anthony , long beach says:

if the team thinks nino is gonna be on the team then they need to open up a roster spot. someone has to go. i would rather it be gillies. konopka’s leadership seemed like a big reason for second half turn around. also thought martin konopka and haley were a pretty effective 4th line that seemed to develop pretty good chemistry towards the end of the year.

  11. avatar Schultz39 says:

I would think that Gillies will be shuffled back and forth between Bridgeport and Long Island and would assume to see Haley and Martin in the everyday lineup. Z was a great member of this team and lockeroom but since he wouldn’t likely take a 2 way contract, it may mean the end, unless he doesn’t have any obvious takers.

I would like to especially see us increase our muscle in the toughness department on the blueline as well.

  12. avatar ed says:

I like all 3 of these guys. I really believe that Konopka changed the culture on this team and his face-off ability is incredible. Just wondering how happy everyone will be with Snow if he signs with Rangers. I really admire players who respect and love playing for the Islanders, especially in these tough times. Will root for Konopka regardless where he lands except when he plays the Isles.

  13. avatar Gabe says:

I would love more clarification about why Zenon is getting the boot if all we hear from CB and other sources is that he’s amazing on the draw, he brings leadership and grit, he’s a fan favorite, and his teammates love him. It just doesn’t add up so there’s clearly something else going on. These characteristics are precisely what you look for in a fourth line center and he won’t command a large salary so management either has a beef with him or something else is not being reported.

    CB – any insight?

  14. avatar philly says:

Gillies over Konopka. . .Gillies at all. . .BRAINdead.

  15. avatar Lav says:

konopka took a lot of stupid penalties. however, i think he was a good vocal guy to have on the team. garth obviously thinks otherwise. i would have much rather seen parenteau get the boot.

  16. avatar Brett says:

I hope you’re wrong on this one CB. Not the way I would do it, but I’m not Garth. My thoughts:

100% keep Haley on a two way. Tough and has shown some ability offensively.

70/30 on keeping Konopka. Good on faceoffs, tough and seems like a leader. Wouldn’t be too upset if he was not re-signed.

0% on re-signing Gillies. He plays 2 to 3 minutes a night and all he does is get into fights and take bad penalties. I don’t see what he brings to the table as a hockey player.

  17. avatar Irish Isle says:

    gillies – Why resign?
    haley – good
Konopka – Why let him go?

  18. avatar Brian G says:

As Long as Gillies is in Bridgeport for 80% of the year , I am fine with it – he is only needed for a few games a year. Haley will probably be one of the first call-ups from the young & talented team at the Bridge. I am not losing any sleep over Konopka, maybe Snow will be changing the lineup to roll 4 lines like most teams in the NHL are doing, most teams 4th lines offer a little more 2-way play over the last few years…you need to still produce some sort of Offense. If Snow already had this in mind why not just make this move and get rid of him at the deadline for a 4th round pick….

Maybe they will look for someone like Drury or Madden for the 4th line center role??

  19. avatar hale078 says:

z was a walking 10 minute misconduct…i love him..but he was a target of the refs..i think they simply want to move away from that

  20. avatar Dr Phil says:

Gillies plays 2 minutes a game, while Haley puts in minutes and has speed and scoring ability, and is a good fighter. Konopka is valuable on face offs, fights, and is a team leader. Good for 4th line. How about getting rid of Hunter????? Bailey’s value is questionable. There is lots of moves Snow can make to keep all three.

  21. avatar JimfromStJames says:

Why does this seem like another ISLES head scratcher?
Gillies is a marked man, plays 2-3 mins a night, that’s it.

At least Z can win face-offs.

IF Snow is keeping him for his fighting ability, what about Haley & Martin?

for every good thing, there is always something weird, don’t get this at all.

  22. avatar hollywood says:

I’ve said this before, as much as u have to like Konopka the guy can’t skate. Haley can take care of Zenon’s responsibilities and he can skate. Gillies is true to his teammates and a two way contract will do just fine. Good moves as far as I’m concerned.

  23. avatar Zarley Z says:

There’s obviously something going on with Kenopka we the fans are not privy to. Whether he’s too vocal, he’s rubbing people the wrong way, he chews with his mouth open, he doesn’t use soap in the shower, etc etc etc. OR, they just feel his spot in the lineup will be better suited for someone else.

Whatever it is, it’s clearly outweighing the positives of his presence that have been outlined above. If he isn’t brought back, we’ll just have to trust (hope?) Garth’s reasoning is solid.

  24. avatar DWC says:

Konopka must have given Ricky a wedgie or something.

  25. avatar BanGarth says:

I love Gillies but the guy is a 2 minute a game player , do we really need that ? I will miss ZK as a player with that much heart and passion is not that easy to find but Haley will soften that blow. Sign Haley to 2- 3 year deal.

  26. avatar 93 Miracle says:

I dont get why they would not bring back Konopka. He is a good enforcer, great in the locker room, wins a lot of faceoffs, stands up for teamates, wears the islander crest on his sleave. Is he going to be the reason you make the playoffs, probably not, but you need someone who puts fear into the opposing team that they cannot mess with your stars or young players and thats what Konopka’s intentions were as he stated once that “we are not going to let opposing teams run over our young players.” I still think their is a chance he comes back.

  27. avatar JimfromStJames says:

DWC you might be on to something there, maybe his out-spokeness involved an open discussion about having the best goalie in the net at all times?

  28. avatar JT says:

I liked Z and what he brought to the team, especially faceoff wins and toughness. This team could face many of the same problems as last year’s team. Without Z, and with two tough guys on 2-way deals, who will keep Tavares and Nino from taking abuse on a nightly basis? We need to protect our young stars.

  29. avatar EdTurner says:

Of course they are keeping Gillies. He is perfect for their budget. His next suspension will start at 40 games, meaning he counts against the salary cap and they don’t have to pay him.

There is NO other explanation that justifies keeping this (barely a) minor league player on the pro squad.

Haley should be on the team. Not keeping Z who is the heart and soul of this team is a joke. But, then again, wait for it, our joke of a team is run by an awful backup goalie.

  30. avatar thepolishprince says:

Money issues plain and simple. I’m happy Haley will be back. Gilles I could live without. IMO he’s a marginally better version of Mitch Fritz. Too bad about Zenon. I would have liked him back.

  31. avatar Mike P says:

Like everyone else you love what Konopka brought but there are better 4th line centers available and perhaps even Haley might be a better 4th line center. Konopka is great on faceoffs but is not a great penalty killer and is not a good skater. Gillies is a legit heavyweight which Konopka is not and would be more useful shuffling in and out of lineup.

  32. avatar paul says:

Drop Gillies. Keep Konopka. No brainer (expect if your brain is Islander management, apparently).

  33. avatar Jimbo says:

Garth -keep Konopka “heart and soul” of team. If anybody has to go then Gillies. We need some talent evaluators-not accountants (Josh Bailey-eh). Agree with Prof. no. 6.

  34. avatar Westfall18 says:

Bad move not bringing z back. He’s a leader. I like Gillies I think Haley is the man but Z is the kind of guy you want in the locker room and watching your back on the ice. Good luck Z you’ll always have fans on Long Island! Blue n’ Orange Army forever! Section 329 NVMC

  35. avatar TomD 37 says:

So we are giving up the most talented of the three players. The best part is the reasoning behind it. Nobody else wants haley or gillies, so we are going to keep them.

  36. avatar Madchef says:

fine with this. Gillies gives up a fighter when needed and will be in the Ahl when not. Haley smart pest, can score a little, andhas more to offer than either Gillies or Konopka. Rather have an extra forawrd who could score than both Z and Haley. Thanks Z for everything and good luck somewhere else. Outside of good lockeroom guy and faceoffs brought nothing else. Most boring fighter, and like mentioned above 10 minute misconduct machine. we can do better

  37. avatar Nawrockstar says:

How do the Isles not resign their best faceoff guy/team leader that protected the young guys? If Z goes so will alot of the heart/comradery these guys showed in the 2nd half of last season… one more year for Z please!!!

  38. avatar PotvinRocks says:

I’m hopeful that Snow tries to sign John Madden as our fourth line center. This way they get a quality veteran centerman in the line up and they insure that Cizakas gets a year in the A.
Haley should be in the lineup on opening day and Gillies will be our health scratch.

  39. avatar Big Van Vader says:

Must have been that terrible goal song.
Haha. He IS a leader. Great faceoff man.
    Too bad.

Now that he’s (probably) gone, can we get something with some balls to it or do we have to keep the Zenon Konopka Memorial Goal Song?

  40. avatar JSExpress says:

Very disappointed that Z will not be back. If the Pittsburgh game was the turning point in the war, then Z is our general. What happened here???

  41. avatar Jmig15 says:

At least the headline was 2 out of the 3 staying and not 2 out of the 3 leaving. Still sad about Z, possibly not coming back.
With haley and Gillies we are gonna win a ton of fights.

  42. avatar gary9-19-22 says:

I think not re-signing Z is a BIG mistake. He is exactly the type of player this team needs.

Doesn’t let the team get abused
WINS face-offs (one of the best in the league)
    Can play short handed
Doesn’t complain over the 4th line minutes (even tough you cant go a whole season and be successful playing the 4th line as little as we do)
    Intangables in th elocker room

I like Haley and a main stay on the 4th line (2-way contract is perfect) and Gillies is needed based on the division we play in and the protection out young guns still need.

  43. avatar Mike says:

Am I missing something here. How does the organization keep Gillies over Konopka. Konopka is a leader on and off the ice and gave the team an identity last season. He was also key on faceoffs. Gillies is a good fighter and a good guy, but brings nothing else to the table. Haley is a keeper.

  44. avatar princetonace says:

I’m still not really clear on the “management issues” with Konopka…they knew exactly what they were getting when they signed him, and I think it is fair to say that Z delivered against expectations…only “reasonable” explanation is that with all of the kids, they didn’t want the 4th line center being the team leader…CB – any clarifiaction on the discontent with Konopka?

  45. avatar TM says:

Haley is a must have. Dump Gillies and keep Konopka. Not even close. Snow has no clue.

  46. avatar 93 Miracle says:

Someone wrote Konopka is the heart and sould of this team?? Hes obviously not! If any teams heart and soul is a 4th line center, that team has problems. Luckily we do not and have a wonderfun future.

  47. avatar Jim Clark says:

It will be interesting to see if what contract Z signs for and on what team. No one really offered anything for him at the trade deadline.

  48. gilles is a true heavyweight who is needed when Isles play certain rough teams. Z spent too much time in the penalty box, leaving team short handed.

  49. avatar SCLI says:

I really like all three players and believe they make an excellent 4th line. Especially if Martin double shifts at times in place of Gillies. We all know why Gillies is coming back. He is a Top enforcer in the NHL, the guys love and respect him and he’ll do anything to protect his teammates. In my opinion his only loss came to Boogaard. No shame in that. Haley is tough, strong and has talent. You will see it come out as he plays and gains confidence. And oh yea, he can fight, although he’s not a heavyweight and you cant expect him to take on that role but anyone 6′, 200 lbs and under is gonna have his hands full with Haley. As for “Z”. I’m a bit baffled as to the reasons he may be let go. He did exactly what the Islanders asked him to do and I think more. Did anyone really expect him to be the face off and team leader that he turned out to be? He played hurt, played in key defensive situations, stood up for teammates, gave the Isles a presents on the ice and always gave 100% even when hurt. And he really Loves playing for this Franchise. That is a rare combination to find in the NHL. I would like to see this 4th line intact for next season. Really, you cant do much better.

  50. avatar SCLI says:

    correction PRESENCE Sorry

  51. avatar JM Wantagh says:

Would love to see ZK stay. A two way deal for Haley and Gilles and there is still room.

  52. avatar jisles says:

    Hey CB,
Any chance Konopka takes a 2 way deal to stay somewhere he likes, with his buddies?

  53. avatar Tim F. says:

I like all three guys, but there probably isn’t room for all three of them on the roster. Each brings something to the table – Gillies is a true heavyweight, Haley is tough and can occasionally put a puck in the net, and ZK is great in the circle and is as tough as anyone in the league. They all have limitations as well, and Gillies has a target on his back with the league. They’re all nice guys to have but none are indisposable.

  54. avatar Jerky says:

I’m a big fan of keeping all three (particularly Gillies and Haley on two-way contracts) unless Snow is able to upgrade. With ragard to the mixed fan reaction for Konopka, I believe he belongs on the team for another season and wonder if there are any lingering concerns about his health (knee) that is precluding the team from tendering an offer.

  55. avatar EricCup says:

ZK – “Leadership, willingness to play hurt, desire to stand up for teammates”, reliable face-off man. They’ve got to be kidding me! He’s one of the main reasons this team started to come together. I really find it hard to believe that Gillies is so loved here. He may be a great guy but there will forever be a target on his back from the refs and his effectiveness will be reduced. Not to mention, other than fighting, he really doesn’t bring much else to the hockey table. RIDICULOUS!

  56. avatar Michael Pastore says:

Snow made 1 out of the 3 decisions correct:
    1. Gillies – He is a goon and nothing less. He brings nothing to the game skill wise. He should not be back in any form.
    2. Haley – He showed skill and toughness he is not just a goon like Gillies he can skate and shoot the puck and still bring the toughness the team needs. Perfect 4th line player.
    3. Konopka – This is the perfect 4th line center. He is tough and he is one of the best face off men in the NHL. To top that off he is a positive force and leader in the locker room.

The Islanders had a perfect 4th line last season in Martin-Konopka-Haley. The Islanders could put them on the ice for 8-10 minutes and not be embarrassed by them. The line had the perfect combination of toughness and skill.

Did Konopka make Snow mad like you did CB? Is that why he is being banished?

  57. avatar Tyler says:

Keeping Gillies over Zenon is an outrage. Gillies is not a hockey player, if they like him so much let him join Doug Weight in Management. Of all the free agents signed last offseason, Konopka has shown the most heart and Islanders pride. He has stood up for the team both on and off the ice, and aside from being a fighter he was one of our team’s best face-off men. Gillies contributes nothing but bad press and a foolish mustache. Konopka actually wants to stay here and is relatively inexpensive, for the Islanders to let a solid role player and leader like him leave just so they can keep a goon, is nothing shot of outrageous and flat out wrong. Just cause his last name is the same as a former Islanders legend, doesn’t mean we should keep him!

  58. avatar MarioGazz says:

With Boogard passing away, Z will end up on the Rags. Please sign him. He does way more for the Isles than Gillies.

  59. avatar Yippy Yappe Uwe says:

Agree with 23. There’s definite something more to the situation with Konopka. From a fan’s perspective he’s a great 4th liner (fights, can play decently, great leadership, and wins faceoffs). I wonder what he did.

As for Gillies. I can’t stand the guy. He brings nothing to the game beside a fight and multiple suspensions. He has no class and I’ve wanted him off this team ever since he came back out of the locker room to bark like an idiot at Tangredi who was shaken up with a concussion.

  60. avatar RWM says:

All three should stay. You have to keep Gillies, he is the only heavyweight we have and can be a healthy scratch. How can you have a guy take 25% of the year in suspensions, BS ones at that, because the team is hated by CC (who is thankfully gone. You cannot discount that. The guy is a Fan favorite, as is ZK and MH……why is that? People are enjoying Old Time Hockey again and these guys are the heart of it for the Isles, with Martin in there too. I for one was a dormant fan for many years. A few games a year I would go to and watch none on TV. I got intrigued by Gillies early in the year because of his namesake and he transformed me back to a fan. Since December I went to 12 games and watched every one on TV. Spent over $500 on Merchandise (Both Gillies T’s and a Gillies Jersey included) and I dropped over 5K for season tickets for next year. And it is because Gillies lit the Fire and Haley helped fuel it.

  61. avatar Healy says:

Love Z on the team but he is a target for the refs. You could see he was a chirper that the officials didn’t like and that lead to more penalties than he deserved. I hope he stays, but it seems like the Isles aren’t too high on him.

  62. avatar Onesinceforty says:

Apparently Kenopka has let the story become about him!

Zarley Z at 23 has it right. Something is going on behind the scenes. It is not always about the play on the ice. Maybe he likes Huntington and Manhattan too much. If that is the case then Garth deserves credit for keeping it quiet and not publicly discrediting Z. In addition, as part of a larger theme GS does keep things close to the vest and I believe has earned a measure of respect from the game’s insiders due to this fact. He is not one to blow private conversations from agents, players, and agents. Eventually, this will pay dividends earned from his tight lipped nature and trustworthiness. I am sure he can be more productive because he does not burn every conversation like some GMs do.

  63. avatar Mike says:

Gillies will be on a 2-way meaning he will only be called upon when necessary. Not big money so not a big deal.

I don’t think letting Z go is an issue. If he doesn’t, hope that others in the locker room step up and take the leadership mantle. Streit will be there. Okposo is maturing. Tavares should be listened to. Heck, even Moulson and Grabner garner respect. And maybe even a new player will be here too. Z’s big loss will be with faceoffs. But I think the current centers can step that up.

Haley can develop into a nice 4th line player. Glad to hear he is in the plans.

  64. avatar Strummer's Army says:

CB, can you please explain why the Isles would not want Konopka around? His teammates seem to enjoy him. You mentioned he is killer on faceoffs, fights etc. He also wisely spoke up for the team several times this season and the guy played and fought hurt at the end of last year for a team he knew tried to trade him when he did not have to. Crap as a UFA he should have sat himself out.

I am happy and Gilies and Haley being back but think all 3 should. It is doubtful Cziakas and Ullstrom are ready for NHL duty, so not too clear on who the 4th line center is unless Haley can play center?

Who is the upgrade the Isles will be getting for Konopka?

Sadly I heard numerous other teams commentators drooling over Konopka last year so get ready to see him in a Flyer, Pens, or Rags uniform.

  65. avatar The new isles gm says:

Amazing how we value a fighter that plays 2 mins a game and 29 NHL teams want part of their organization more then a guy who can play 10-15 mins, win big face-offs to protect a lead and be a mentor to young players. Good thing our goal for next year is to make the playoffs

  66. avatar Isle Be Damned says:

Haley & Konopka please. Gillies is a waste of a roster spot. The team plays with 1 less player everytime he dresses. Who cares if he can go out and beat up some other teams goon. If Gillies doesn’t dress, then there won’t be any pointless fights between 2 neanderthauls.

At least Haley & Konopka can skate & play a little bit.

  67. avatar Strummer's Army says:

I think people knocking Gillies are the same type that believe everything some reporter from another team or a guy that watches nothing but highlights says.

Without Gillies (who has become one of the NHL’s best) teams hurt Islanders.

Gillies will not have such a target on his back (nor any Isle) because Campbell is gone and Shanahan seems capable of being fair, professional and operating with little bias. Please refer to Botta’s article on his actions against Avery in defense of Snow. He has indicated that everyone gets a fresh start under him.

I would think everyone would have learned the importance of a heavyweight over the years where the Isles went so soft. Martin, Gillies, Haley, Hamonic are all vital (Konopka too) and so is adding two more d-men. Matter of fact anyone Isles draft or sign from now on (unless elite talent) should have size and snarl since 99% of the core (although super talented) are pretty soft.

  68. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

Tampa did just fine without Z this year and if we add the right pieces we will be just fine too. He added a lot to this team but like people have said he is a target to the refs and a walking 10 minute misconduct. I am not huge on keeping Gillies around and would rather add some toughness on D. Haley I am more than OK with seeing on this team next season.

  69. avatar OJK says:

As “FUN” as Gillies is, it makes absolutely no sense to keep him. And even less than Zero sense, when they could have Zenon instead. Folks smarter than all of us know this. For some reason, except for Garth.

  70. avatar beachchica says:

Big Z should stay. Do not underestimate the power of team chemistry!

  71. avatar Scott B says:

With Drury gone from the Rags, i think there could be a spot on our third line, and maybe some 2 mil that’d be worth spending for him. I’d rather him be our FO guy since he’s not in box every 20 minutes.

  72. avatar James from Swindles says:

I don’t have a problem with bringing any or all back. Gillies is a guy you can stash in the press box for half the season and only dress him as needed. In the meantime, assuming they bring back Comeau and Bailey, the forward lines are essentially intact from last season, with Hunter and Gillies potentially flip-flopping in the 12th/13th forward roles.

Haley, by the way (if i recall correctly) is a naturally center, so he would slot in where Konopka was.

  73. avatar Piper says:

REALLY Konopka YES keep him. Haley 2 way contract and no to Gillies..

  74. avatar Sean S says:

People tend to over value players who are on their team. Zenon must have done or said something in the league if we dont want him and no one would trade for a veteran, especially a team fighting for a playoff spot. Reminds me and sounds like the same issue with Ted Nolan, we loved him and wanted him here, brought 2 teams thats shouldnt be in the playoffs to them and still no team has made him an NHL coach since.

  75. avatar TimQ says:

I don’t get it. Gillies? Really?

  76. avatar Peter says:

Keeping Gillies is a smarter move on the Islanders part. For all of Konopka’s willingness to fight he has never put fear into the oppositions fighter. Look at the number of fights he’s had, no ones running from him. Guys like McIntyre and Godard would eat him alive.
Trevor scares the daylights out of other fighters. His AHL rep is well known and his start to an NHL career has enhanced his rep.
Haley will do more than fill the void left if Konopka exits.

  77. avatar Ray says:

I love gillies but i would never keep him over Z or Haley…. Z gave us an Identity and helped get this team a little respect for once…..Gillies is strictly a fighter Z Can fight win faceoffs and kill penalties….Haley is sort of the same mold as Z…..Garth is growing on me but I cant agree with letting Z go. We the fans love him and dont want to see him with Philly next year beating us up…

  78. avatar NYI365 says:

It really isn’t such a big deal, ya Z could win face-offs and fight BUT he couldn’t play the game at all and he must have done something that the isles management don’t like him for. Z had 307 penalty mins!!! Y in the hell do we need that especially since he only had 1 goal and 7 points all season.

  79. avatar STeve says:

Z must have done something; said something … I would prefer to keep a strong face-off man. Love Haley. Iffy on Gillies although no one messes with us w him in the line up.

  80. avatar terry b says:

since were not fighting for the cup yet…lets keep all 3 and have a tough team, gillies on a 2 way,k and haley full time, love to see avery bloody every time we play them rags.old time hockey

  81. avatar misterpink says:

Even with Gillies playing 2 mins a game – if you watch the Islanders and pay attention – they’ve played better when he’s on the bench then when he isn’t. His presence alone seems to light a fire under everyone else down the line. Even more so than Z I believe.

Hell, find a way to put him in a suit I don’t really care – just keep him around the guys during the game.

  82. avatar Ethan K says:

Gillies news isn’t a shocker. Most teams have an enforcer in their organization. I don’t see him starting out in the NHL though. He’ll be brought up if the Isles think they need a toughness/energy boost, or if there’s a few injuries to the 4th line. Konopka is extremely good in the faceoff circle, has a great attitude, and wants to be here. However, he as a center, his defense was lacking, he offered nothing in the offensive zone, and his skating is a weakpoint. He was also constantly in the box/thrown out of the game. Clearly the Isles like players who can play in any zone, and are mobile (who doesn’t?). Micheal Haley can play physically, fight as well as anyone else his size, and he can also skate well and contribute offensively on occasion. There are several 4th line free agents out there on July 1st. I wouldn’t even rule out Haley starting out as a center and perhaps Joel Ward and Matt Martin on the wings. Hopefully we get a few more potential bottom-6 players in the late rounds of the draft. I wouldn’t mind a trade down or two to stock up on 4-7 round picks to draft big physical players with mobility.

  83. avatar Scott says:

Konopka would never accept a two way deal and Gillies will so they are not taking Gillies over Konopka. They can keep Gillies in the AHL for insurance and still keep an NHL roster spot open.

  84. avatar IslesFan73 says:

Haley is the clear keeper of the three, and Gillies will not eat up a full time roster spot. Having Z was fun. Other than his face off prowess, we have no need for him with Martin, Haley and Gillies when needed. With that said, we still need more full time players with size up front and on D.

  85. avatar AFIsle says:

they have no place for the likes of konopka. he offered nothing but faceoffs. gillies they should keep for when they vs teams filled with goons hes a good enforcer. and remember they have dougie behind the bench now. hes a guy the team can look up to and learn from.

  86. avatar coralspringsislefan says:

Since Haley nor Konopka can continuously and effectively fight the heavyweights of the league that makes sense. It would be silly to ask Matt Martin to try and be that player for you especially since we want him to develop into a different role with this team. Haley and Konopka both fight middle weights effectively but Haley seems to have a bit more upside in the skill department and was lights out in his fights last year. I certainly don’t want the potential of Haley to slip away to another team. We developed him and now is his chance. In business which sports are sometimes you just need a stop gap and that might just be the fate of Konopka. Great guy by the way and I will be sad to see him go if that is the case

  87. avatar JimfromStJames says:

Funny but reading all the posts gives the answer.
Haley will be a regular 4th line guy.

Gillies will be a Press Box 13th,14th guy.

Some guys need to play on a regular basis, Gillies does not, i think, make him a perfect “extra” foward.

I really think Garth is planning on a youngster to come up and be the next Z.

another funny thought, what would Drury bring to this team? Face offs & leadership, while staying out of the box?

  88. avatar peter DeBenedetto says:

John Tavares is 5 feet taller with 2 of the three guys mentioned in this article in the line up.

  89. avatar Claude says:

Sorry , Gilles brings absolutely nothing to the table. Theres plenty of guys who can fight and net aleast five a year. The only way Gilles scores is by accident

  90. avatar Joe says:

    Bring back all 3!

  91. avatar UIF says:

Don’t need four fighters on the team…Haley and Martin can take care of the fights Konopka would have been in. Gillies is there for when the Isles need a heavyweight. I don’t have a problem with this plan at all. Haley and Martin bring more to the table than Z in more areas of the game. The only X-factor is what Z brought from a leadership standpoint. Hopefully other guys in the room step up.

  92. avatar Ethan says:

Would be sad to see Konopka go, sure the isles need more room for young guns in the NHL, but Konopka could easily be the team’s captain. Wish he could stay, but letting him go is sadly understandable.

  93. avatar Dan- Wilton CT says:

so we will have martin-gillies-haley, how many “enforcers” do we need? I really liked Konopka and like you feel he should stay but having 4 offensive spots reserved for a enforcer type player would be a waste.

The good news is with the arrival of Nino we may start to have a nice sized lineup for the first time since 07

  94. avatar Bags502 says:

Haley 100%… hero in my book for bloodying Avery

Gillies on a two-way contract is perfect, you still need a heavy weight to play against certain teams…

Konopka I like, but when ur only contribution is winning faceoffs, you can be replaced… too many bad penalties and can’t score on gimmie opportunities. (Sign Madden or a Blair Betts type of defensive type of player)

  95. avatar "WeWantTen" says:

Sorry to see Z go, but I’m happy we’re keeping the other two! I see the “Human Growth Hormone” Line (HGH) Haley Gillies Hunter

  96. avatar bill says:

Ridiculous that Haley and Gilles would be kept over Z. He looked like the one guy who really did try to bring the group closer.

So…Yay for 2 minutes a night of waste of space Gilles! And yay for healthy scratch Haley. C’mon- those two guys are not everyday guys. Let them go to BPort and bring them up when you need them. This team is a lot tougher than they were last year.

Z is the one who needs to stay. Shame on management if they let him go.

  97. avatar BanGarth says:

I love Gillies but the guy fought 9 times last year , in none of those fights did he pummel anyone , he just doesn t lose. If you are going to get a heavyweight who plays 2 minutes a game at least get soemone that people fear , i don t think anyone worries about Trevor.

  98. avatar Hockeymandad says:

Big Z should be the top keeper, between Haley and Gillies is a pick em. Gillies should stay just for his name though, regardless of relation. Face-offs though should win out as a tiebreaker when comparing the enforcers. If anything but to teach the core his tricks.

  99. avatar Jethro09 says:

Letting Konopka go = Dumb. I don’t understand it. Every team needs a 4th line center and Konopka is tailor-made for that role. He loves it on Long Island and the players and fans love having him on the team. This should be a no brainer. Konopka needs to be brought back. Two-way contracts for Haley and Gillies are also no-brainers.

  100. I like the idea of keeping Gillies. Character goes a long way. He’s gotta shake that bad rep though. I think his teammates love him.

I can say the same for Z…I like him as a leader, but I can understand them parting with him. Hope not though.

I love Haley. He’s def got some skill and is a tough customer. I hope he continues to develop.

An article on Martin would be interesting, because he could be grouped in here, but can be grouped with other platers too. I think there should still be a heavy focus on developing him properly

  101. avatar texas_isles says:

if Z is not brought back, does that mean another new goal song for 11-12, since the song was his idea?

  102. avatar Peter says:

How can the Islanders be so stupid? Konopka was the leader of this team last year. I don’t ever want to see Gillies play another game with an Islanders’ crest. His behavior last year was despicable. Get rid of Gillies and keep Haley and Konopka. It’s not even close.

  103. avatar islesfan999 says:

I hope we keep konopka. Would be a huge mistake to not give him a year or two. He should be on the team.

  104. avatar Petey Pete says:

So long, Zenon…choosing that godawful goal song is enough to cost a man his job.

  105. avatar LouD says:

I like Konopka as much as the next person but he isn’t part of the future so no need to shed tears over his departure. The thing that actually excites me about Zenon leaving is the fact that we can do away with the WORST goal song that has ever graced an NHL game. Leave it to the Euros, they love the 80′s, and will never let it go but we have moved on over here. Time to leave the past in the past and look ahead to the future in more ways than one.

  106. avatar nyislanders93 says:

I would prefer Haley and Konopka to come back over Haley and Gillies but Gillies is the heavyweight that can take on the Godards and Prongers of the league so I’m not too disappointed. Konopka’s role as a middleweight fighter will probably be replaced by Matt Martin, who hopefully gets a chance on the 3rd line to show some of the skill that he does have. Haley is a great signing. He did a lot right and very little wrong in his time with the team last season.

  107. avatar Dean Dog says:

Still don’t get people? All 3 guys have a role and all three are important factors. To say Gillies is a goon is an insult to enforcers… Boogard, RIP, took how long to score his first NHL goal? Gillies got one driving hard to the net, and then off a sick deflection waist high on one of the best goalies to play the game. I often wonder how many people who post all there opinions have ever played the game? Even more, where’s the respect for a guy like Gillies that takes years to make it to the show, but never gave up on his dreams. It’s that heart and loyalty that make him just as much of an asset as any guy in the NHL. Cheers to all three guys, you’re all great and much respect, whatever happens.

  108. avatar metalcoconut says:

Getting rid of Z would be a BIG mistake. The guy helped the team gain an identity and was a KEY faceoff guy. This just feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face. What did he do to piss Garth off?

  109. avatar 19inarow says:

No matter what Garth does well (and there’s been a lot of it lately), the hockey media only vilifies him, and re-signing Gillies will be their new focal point (THN!).

  110. avatar The Simtuation says:

Unless they bring in Drury or Madden for the 4th line center spot, getting rid of ZK is stupid. Does this mean the Simtuation can make an islander comeback? And yes, i know the Drury Madden thing is highly unlikely.

  111. avatar st4rr says:

This is great news. My three favorite players. They may not be the best players, but they are the hardest working. Its great to see the Isles have a “Hanson Brothers” line

  112. avatar Anthony 61 says:

Why does everyone love Konopka? I just dont get it and have disliked him since July 1 last yr when we signed him. If he is so great, why did the Lightning say “adios” before we signed him. Yeah he was good at faceoffs, BUT thats it! He will lead the league in fights and PIM’s and score EXACTLY 1 goal. Frans is great and JT got alot better in the 2nd half of the year. Would rather use his 600K and add another 400K to sign a 3rd line player from LONG ISLAND IN Chris Higgins. Not a blockbuster but the Isles should have a player from the Island. Missed on Nystrom last yr, Komasarek is not worth his salary, maybe get Joel Ward, I played roller hockey yrs ago with him at Hot Skates in Lynbrook. Remember, if Hunter returns, he can take ZK’s 4th line spot, thats where he’ll be but i say buy him out. TOO SLOW AND WENT FROM 29 goals in rookie yr, then lockout, then went from 22, 17, 14, and 1 last yr. What does that say? Put on waivers and demote, or buyout please, NINO has his size and hits.

  113. avatar D in Big D says:

Z to me was way overrated.Fights? Not really just hangs on most of the time. What good is winning draws if you cannot do anything w/ the puck and have to immediately get off ice.Gillies to me is a no brainer. No one will take liberties w/ him dressed.Haley is another no brainer for depth line minutes and skill to boot.Good news as far as I’m concerned. Now lets sign/trade for some established talent.Another thought on the Gillies signing is management sending a strong message to the league that no matter what the perception is they will protect their players.Gotta like that!

  114. avatar streit02 says:

Biggest question is who replaces him? It better not be Czikas. Kid should go to the bridge. I think Zenon is more important to this team for his personality rather than his on ice play. You could see Tavares really looking up to him at times last season. Konopka’s loss on the ice shouldnt be noticed much, but the effect it could have on everyone else is something worth watching.

  115. avatar streit02 says:

to my comment above: I believe Haley played center in Bridgeport. Perhaps he outplayed Z off the island.

  116. avatar Big Van Vader says:

(105)Now that Zenon is (almost) gone, let’s bring in Panteras’ “Walk” as our goal song. This team is all about earning RESPECT in this league and this song fits the bill. Glad about the team retaining SOME toughness in Gillies and Haley.

  117. avatar Steve Vegas says:

If the Islanders plan on being a winner the only guy that should be on their everyday lineup next is Zenon Konopka. Gillies is only good for 2 minutes a game and a fighting major. Haley is the kind of guy that provides depth, but he is certainly not an everyday player on a winning team. Z provides leadership, can play the PK, take big face offs, and will drop the gloves when needed. That is the kind of player that winning teams have playing every night. They are called role players. Ask anyone that has been in and around the game long enough and they will tell you the same. Plz wake up Garth….

  118. avatar Jared says:

Big mistake letting Konopka go. You finally have a guy who WANTS to be here! Keep him and drop the other 2

  119. avatar 2Bit says:

Do NOT drop Haley!!!! you crazy Jared?

  120. avatar Blizzard says:

…..have to keep Gillies presence IMO. Haley is a keeper….sorry Z.

  121. avatar Matt says:

I don’t understand why we don’t sign all of them. They are all cheap. They all add 4th line grit and toughness. They all like the organization. They are all fan favorites. They all add roster flexibility. They can serve as our last forwards and can be healthy scratched on any given night depending on the matchups. These are the kinds of things good, deep teams do.

  122. avatar Tom D in NJ says:

Haley and Kanopka are hard nosed players. Gillies is good for staged fights, which are dumb!

  123. avatar NYI FAN says:

    Gillies,Grillies,Girlies, any way you spell it, he won’t be here, keep Z & Haley;

  124. avatar Al says:

C’mon you guys. You’re not being fair. We should absolutely have complete faith in Garth Snow. This is the general manegr who picked John Tavares, took Grabner off waivers and…has been the leader of the worst team in the NHL for the last four years.

How dare any of you question his judgment!

  125. avatar Bobby N says:

keep em’ all. How do we have Trst Hunter on the payroll and let Z go? The ONLY redeemimng quality of this team is the POTENTIAL for toughness. Bring them all back. The patsy pansey ice chick NYI’s of old make me sick

  126. avatar Kenny says:

There is no mystery to the Konopka decision. If just one of the Big Three (Wang, Garthy, Ricky) liked him, he would have been re-signed before the end of the season. They do not so he’s a goner. Very simple to anyone who pays attention and doesn’t just accept every move the team makes.

  127. avatar JT says:

No one in the last ten years stood up more for this franchise’s image than Zenon Konopka. To thank him, the team kicks him in the rear.

  128. avatar Erika says:

He DOES stand up for the team! Unlike DP he means it! Keep Z!!!!

  129. avatar Michael from Toronto says:

As much as Konopka did to bring this team together, I think there is something that has happened behind the seens. When you look at who is playing in the finals, there fourth line centre is much more porductive than Konopka. His last season in Tampa, he scored 15 goals. Why was he not re-signed there. I believe that says a lot. His toughness is easily replaceable with Haley and Martin.

As for Haley, I would like to see him back. Capuano knows him well and I believe he is a good fourth liner.

Gilles is a guy I think can stay or go. It would say something if he stays and Konopka goes.

  130. avatar Lean Cugine says:

Keep Gillies, Haley and Yablonski! Time to earn some respect around the league!

  131. avatar Mike says:

Take all 3 guys. Where do they fit in the Boston v. Vancouver series? NOWHERE! The’re not 4th liners that are going to get you far in the playoffs.

  132. avatar robert says:

i have no problem keeping haley but keeping gillies over z is of course a joke. however you have to remember that z understands what it means to be a islander. he understands what heart and soul means to the team and what a privelege it is to be with the team that once was the greatest hockey franchise ever. arragant wang and snow dont care and understand what that means. they only care about saving money and having players on the team who keep their mouth shut and never say anything. sad but true.

  133. avatar Alex R. says:

I find this news very disappointing. Chris, are we going to get any more clarification or insights from you here? Gabe nailed it earlier: “I would love more clarification about why Zenon is getting the boot if all we hear from CB and other sources is that he’s amazing on the draw, he brings leadership and grit, he’s a fan favorite, and his teammates love him. It just doesn’t add up so there’s clearly something else going on. These characteristics are precisely what you look for in a fourth line center and he won’t command a large salary so management either has a beef with him or something else is not being reported. CB – any insight?”

  134. avatar Erika says:

Z is fun, but except for faceoffs, he does absolutely nothing.
No matter what you think about Gillies, I’ve noticed how much more relaxed and productive J.T. is when Gillies is in the line-up. Sign him to a 2-way.
Haley seems to actually have some talent. Sign him on a 2-way as well.See what he can do this year. We need a few tough guys to protect the young guys from getting their head bashed in every night.

  135. avatar Darren says:

This stuff with Konopka is just like what happened with Trottier, Jaffe, Jankowski and a few others. All the fans love these guys. Then Snow starts leaking stories to get fans to believe they did something bad. The koolaid drinkers suck it all down. And now you get a lot of people bad-mouthing Konopka when all he ever did was stand up for the Islanders.

I’ve seen some fan polls where it was close to 90% that they wanted Zenon to come back next season. Once word gets out that the Islanders aren’t bringing him back, the backstabbers start throwing dirt on the guy.

What a shame for many of you. Keep buying what the last-place GM is selling. Go ahead. Drink it down. Good. Now you can pay for your tickets again next season. Fools.

  136. avatar Steve Vibert says:

    We want KONOPKA!!!!!

  137. avatar vrinqueens says:

Love Trevor but he’s a marked man around the NHL and the refs,(unfairly) but that’s the reality. Snow should make a big push for UFA John Scott. Tavares, Grabner and gang are protected…end of story.

  138. avatar Stumpy32 says:

I understand the point of an enforcer on the team. I totally do, and I do think the toughness we showed in the second half last year was key to our rise to respectability. However, Gillies is not that guy. Gillies is a guy without any discernable hockey talent who can barely skate and hits. That’s all he can do. And, frankly, he hits dirty. Konopka, on the other hand, is a tough player with a bit of talent, especially on faceoffs, and he’s 10x the leader that Gillies is, and that’s huge on a team like this.

I just don’t get the fascination with Gillies. I’m thinking of our enforcers over the years – Curran, Baumgartner, Vukota, Pilon, Darius, etc.. – they all had talent, they could get up the ice when they had to. Gillies is a joke. Why not just bring up that MMA guy Yablonski if they’re gonna go in that direction.

Haley, though? Love him. Keep him on the big club.

  139. avatar D. Meng says:

I like all 3 of these decisions, but the Gillies one is my least favorite. I suppose a two-way contract isn’t the worst thing in the world. Keeping Haley is key and Konopka isn’t necessary. I would have preferred that we traded him for a 4th rounder.
