News Roundup: JT Signs, Bailey Deadline, Yashin Update
The Islanders have formally announced the six-year contract extension of center John Tavares.
TSN reported yesterday that the deal was for a total of $33 million and comes with an annual salary cap hit of $5.5 million.
Katie Strang of ESPN New York spoke with Alexei Yashin earlier today and he said that he isn’t sure of his plans for this season and that he was unlikely to attend the Islanders training camp.
She also reports that restricted free agent Josh Bailey has until 7AM tomorrow morning to sign a new contract or he will forfeit the entire season while the Islanders will continue to hold his rights.

Josh would be making a huge mistake to turn down any offer. One year off for him will really hurt his career.
-
How can he possibly be angling for more money. he was aweful for all but the first 6 games of last year
-
Don’t be a fool Josh, take the offer and prove you’re worthy of more $.
-
don’t sign Josh, you can be traded away either way. Great move locking up JT, he’s far more important that Bailey.
-
Just curious – who posted this news? Is it SNY now, someone else or is CB still peeking in once in a while?
-
Maybe he wants out, and is trying to force a trade? In any scenario, a poor business plan to follow.
-
if josh winds up sitting this year, i’m done with this kid and his stupid agent..They had more than enough time to get a deal done…smart move for both sides, sign a one year deal at reasonable price..
-
Who wrote this article? glad to see things are still being kept up with….
-
oh and if bailey can be used in a trade to bring back a big gritty, crease clearing d-man….sign me up
-
I’m deffinetly on board for a Bailey trade. Perhaps a package for schenn. Same agent. Both have the same agent. Both don’t have contracts. Or maybe Bailey swap with turris. But defensemen is what we need
-
Thanks for the update….uh…..whoever you are.
-
Trade Bailey’s ass while he still has some value and let Strome be the 3rd line center!
-
Tavares = AWESOME for Islanderville in so many ways!
Bailey = No leg to stand on. Take a 1-2 year deal and break out. You’re on the cusp of doing so, then you’ll get paid!
Yashin = Who is that again?
-
I don’t blame Bailey especially since we don’t know what he’s being offered. There could only be a three year @ NHL minimum deal there. I think the team owes him a little more than that.
-
Really great news about and for JT! I knew it would happen and had no worries.
Bailey should sign his tender if they cannot reach a deal. That way he won’t be locked out (in a critical year for him) and can continue negotiating.
Snow has said no to Yashin. Yashin should go back to Russia, I don’t think he’ll find an NHL deal that he wants. I am sure the organization who lost its entire team recently could sign and use him if they are getting a team this year rather then next.
wondering when we may see some trades? Think the time is coming soon.
-
WE WANT BOTTA!
-
let the kid back it up before he holds out
-
I have absolutely no clue what’s going through Bailey and his agent’s heads! He’s been nothing but a disappointment at the NHL level. He should have jumped at his qualifying offer, or end up setting his career back even further.
For comparison, Frans Neilson, is only making $550 thousand this year, and his value to the team is much, much greater than Bailey’s. If Bailey does not sign today, I don’t think he’ll ever play for the Isles again.
-
Why is this owner different from all other owners.
I am unaware of any other NHL team with a policy which demands that a player be signed by an artificial deadline or lose the ability to play for the team for the season.
This is another case of the owner trying to impose his way of doing business without understanding how negotiations in the NHL have traditionally been done.
I am sure that the L.A. Kings will not be trying this on Drew Doughty any time soon.
How did firing a competent, Stanley Cup winning GM and signing DP for 15 years, over his objections, work out for the Islanders?
-
#16 – I believe it was Yashin’s team which suffered the horrible plane crash. Lucky for him, he was in the US. As for Bailey, I agree with most of my fellow Isle fans. He should signup for a year, prove himself and than sign for the coin. Until than, his play dictates the contract. His agent needs to look at the Islander history. They do not bluff. See Nab and Baum…both lost signifcant time in the NHL trying to force Isle mgmt hands
-
The Isles have better centers coming up through the system, they don’t need Mr Bailey and his stupidity, trade him away and no one will care, he’s Snow’s worst 1st round pick.
-
Great news about JT.
Bailey sees the 1st round picks before & after him getting 5 & 6 year deals for $4.5-5.5 million and thinks he deserves the same. Play like Okposo & Tavares & you’ll get it kid! But if you keep being as inconsistently as you were & you’ll never get those offers. Bailey COULD be a very good player. Sign the qualifying offer & negotiate a long term contract after you’ve proven you deserve that sort of commitment from the team- by showing commitment TO the team. -
I cannot believe that Bailey hasn’t signed the qualifier. This is a guy that screams “play another year and impress people enough to get a better contract.” The absolute worst thing that can happen to Bailey is to waste a year of his “development” sitting out right now. Hope is agent realizes that.
Otherwise, I truly believe the Tavares signing means big things for our future here. No one, I don’t care how much you love your linemates and teammates, would agree to play another seven years for a franchise if that player didn’t know exactly where he’d be playing. I can almost guarantee that Wang gave JT assurances that they weren’t leaving Long Island, or at worst, the metro area, in 2015.
-
Josh and his agent did not get the memo that you have to earn your money.
Take a lesson from JT. He showed where his heart is. If Josh Bailey did not see how Snow rewards a good player, well just sit on the sideline and watch the others. -
can we please trade Bailey. please. thanks
-
by 7 am tomorrow, bailey will sign. he has zero leverage, the current CBA makes him an indentured servant. play better josh, and in a few years, you will be well paid. if not, Mr Wang will toll your contract, you will waste a year, sign for the same money next year and have to wait another season to get the big $. dont piss into the wind, you only get wet.
-
The Tavares deal was first priority, now they can wrap up the Bailey deal. He is such a good kid…it’ll be fun seeing him have a break out season. Don’t get down on him just because this is taking some extra time.
-
Never a fan of Bailey. He was collecting an NHL salary instead of being in Juniors for 2 years. He is $2,000,000 ahead of the game. Him not signing is a bonus. Assures of Niño Stome or Samsonov all with much better talent making the team . Heck AMac I believe has 2 more years at $550k per year. Trade him for Hogdson Both players could use a change of scenery.
-
No one empathizes with you, Josh. You’ve been a border-line NHL player thus far. Better read the writing on the wall and sign the tender.
-
Poor move for both sides if this deal does not get done! Isles piss away any trade value and Josh pisses away a bigger future contract!
-
#15 – Why do the Islanders owe him more than that? What has he done in his 3 yrs here (ok, we will give him a pass on the first year). He should be happy with the offer he got, sign it, and go out and have a great year and then he will deserve a long term contract.
-
JT… SWEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!
JB… dont be stupid.. sign, be happy that you get what you get. You have really not earned anything at this point.
-
im actually betting people the Isles make the playoffs this year–Great Numbers/time for Tavares
-
Really Josh Bailey, you have zero leverage, take a 1 year deal and then earn your paycheck. You have proved nothing to the team and the fans.
-
Glad to have JT signed – I hope he got an assurance from Snow that he’ll surround him with some high level talent or we’ll never really find out what JT can do.
The Isles rushed Josh into the NHL and need to step up to the plate and acknowledge that they harmed his future. To me they need to work with him, I still see potential there so they should find a reasonable contract and get it donw.

I revisited Bailey’s draft (2008) and as Seinfeld might ask, “Where did this take place, in a Bizarro world?”
1) Bailey, sign or no sign, certainly a disappointment to date.
Round Two:
2) Trivino: you don’t hear squat about him!
3) Ness: has skills may be too small.
4) Hamonic: Finally, a prize!Round 3:
5) Toews: traded to CHI this week
6) Niemi: traded to NYR
7) Petrov: THE Mystery ManNow, Bizarro world comes into play….
Round 4:
Donovan & 9) Ullstrom…both figure to be serviceable NHL playersRound 5:
10) Poulin. maybe our franchise goalie?
11) Martin: already a NHL 4th linerRound 6:
12) DiBenedetto: possible NHL 4th liner.
With the exception of Hamonic, the best wine was definitely at the bottom of the vat!

Josh, Sean is on the phone and he wants to talk to you.
By the way, I really like Bailey but I too want to see him put it together a little more before a major commitment is made.
Now, with this new post I am going to have to continue banging this site 10 times a day. I thought I had my life back. I’m glad I don’t.
-
Isles have no one but themselves to blame for Bailey situation. Keeping him in the NHL as an 18-year-old old, when he obviously was not ready, meant burning a year of his contract for nothing.
Bailey is in bad spot anyway — the specter of Ryan Strome has to be in his rear-view mirror. Even if he signs, expect a trade for a young defenseman.
-
So glad JT signed I never saw an indication he wouldn’t. He does not seem like a BSer and always throws his lot in with the Isles. Like Rick Nash he is a great player with great character and upbringing, a great cornerstone to have.
SOOOO Happy IPB lives. Best to CB we have you to thank. Please come back and visit. Best to you in EVERY endevour.
-
@comment 32. Yes, the organization did make a mistake rushing Bailey to the NHL, but why should they go out of their way to accomadate a player who so far just can’t cut it? He has NO leverage here. Facts are facts and after three years in this league he still clearly doesnt have a clue. I watch just about every game every year and to me, Bailey is the least important piece of the ‘young core’. If the team just let him walk I wouldn’t even bat an eye. He’s not a checker so he shouldn’t play third/fourth line and where exactly do you see him in the top six? Frans is the best third line center we have but he has to play 2 cuz Bailey can’t cut it or form anything close to the chemistry Frans did with Grabs and Kyle.
-
I dont know early seasom Bailey last year was pretty impressive. They have to find a way to get that production out of him for full year. I believe he has it in him to be a high quality player in this league.
He kinda reminds me of Bertuzzi a little. I would hate to see them let him go so fast and turn it around soon after. He hasnt been in the league long enough to say he is a bust sometimes it takes players a little longer than others to figure it out. Patience!!
I want to see the Islanders get this one done! Lets Go Islanders!!!
Nice Signing JT also!!!
-
This site has really gone to the birds since Botta left.
-
Suck it up, Josh, get a deal signed, do what you can do to improve your game and when the time comes for free agency you’ll be set for a good payday.
Great to hear JT has signed and will avoid the RFA/arbitration hassles. Fun listening to CB with shocked Toronto radio guys that anyone would stay on Long Island. Hey, it’s pretty good if you got the dough-ray-me and JT does. Next stop: an all star game and a playoff team!

Sign Bailey. His current status is on the Isles for rushing the kid. He has given his heart and soul to this team and community and DESERVES a contract and at least another year to prove himself.
-
while i would not lose any sleep if j.b. comes back or not, i certainly lost a lot of sleep last night on c.b. not coming back. maybe it was all a bad dream and c.b. is here after all.
-
Josh needs to sign as he is an important part to this team and organization. Hopefully he will do the right thing and sign.
-
Adios, Bailey! We can give your spot to Strome, a good player. Wish Garth would trade Bailey already. The guy gets demoted and expects a raise? Is he kidding? He stuck out like a sore thumb last year.
-
If Bailey saw what I saw from Strome in the rookie game against the Bruins rookies Tuesday night, then he’d better get his rear end into camp, sign his deal and get working, because if he sits the year, his spot is going to be gone. Strome is an elite talent.
-
Newsday reports baily signs for 2 years. Now he fights for third line centre. I thnk he will break out
-
Bailey signed tonight for 2 yrs. 2.1 million
-
ProHockeyTalk confirms…Bailey back in the fold! Smart move Josh…now start playing like a top-10 pick and big money will surely follow.
-
Good to see Josh signing a two year deal. Don’t be surprised if Yashin is in the fold before the season begins as the Isles are still under the floor.
-
Yashin not planning to go to isles invite b/c he has ZERO chance of making the team. its that simple.
sorry KHL is not the NHL. you remove yourself from NHL for few years, RUST BUILDS.

The anonymous SNY author of this News Roundup has been identified as Alexei Yashin.

Finally some good solid positive news.
-
.. Looking foward to having Bailey FINALLY have a good solid NHL season!!
.. So CB’s gone forever?

lets go josh, put the pen to the paper
