is JR crying this interview? he makes some good points though

  2. avatar Big Dally Mac says:

Roenick must have been on a stationary bike during the interview…I loved the interview though…another guy who likes what we have done…and a guy known for being straight forward and speaking his mind…(just ask Patty Marleau)…in other words no reason for him to over extend our chances unless he figured we’d be in the hunt…another great one CB

  3. avatar Jmig15 says:

Lost a lot of respect for this guy after he jumped on the islanders about the brawl game. He just went along with what all the other media was saying, he threw the isles under the bus

  4. avatar bergie says:

Jmig: if youre gonna have a problem with every media guy who jumped on the isles after the suspension game, you might as well not watch read or listen to anyone.

anyway, great stuff.Nice of JR to take your call right after what i guess was a long run.

  5. avatar Bababoey to ya'll says:

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anyone give us any form of respect…

  6. avatar Big Boy says:

It sounded like he was on the treadmill as he was talking…LOL

  7. avatar talus says:

CB – I can’t believe you let guys talk nice about Snow. What are you his PR guy? Just kidding.

Makes my day to hear people I expect to be critical actually say really positive things about the Isles. I’m loving this season preview you did with SNY.

  8. avatar Al says:

Seems like JR has the same post playing career problem as his friend Snowy. He’s getting fat. At least JR is trying to work it off by the sound of the interview.

He made a great point about the injuries. love AMac but if we’re going to give big minutes to skinny guys like him and Franzie, we’re going to have some injuries.

  9. avatar schultz says:

Awesome. JR sounds as excited for our team as I do.

  10. avatar Steven says:

Ok Garth has been called aggresive and now a wheeler dealer in the last two interviews. Did a miss a bunch of trades?

  11. avatar vic says:

Love Roenick or hate him, the guy doesn’t sugercoat anything like just about every suit on TV these days. So if he thought the Islanders didn’t have much of a future or wouldbe good this season, Roenick would say it. Means alot that he’s so positive. Good for him for going against the grain of everyone else picking us for 12th.

  12. avatar Westfall says:

Really good to continue hearing that most NHL folks are high on our young players. Calgary GM Jay Feaster seems to disagree with JR on how to build a team, though. He was asked the other day why not tear the Flames down and rebuild with high draft picks? Interesting response: “I’m tired of this question, I’ll tell you very honestly. I’m getting a little sour. How many teams . . . every year, for the last 10 years, five years, eight years, have finished in the bottom five, bottom seven, bottom 10? They’ve had a pick anywhere from No. 1 to No. 10 year after year after year after year, and they still wander in the desert. And they’re no closer to getting out than they were 10 years ago.” As a guy who built Tampa into a Cup champion, Feaster has to be taken seriously. I point this out not to knock Garth; he’s actually done a real good job stockpiling high-end talent. Rather, the point is that there comes a time when the goal has to be winning and not just “rebuilding”. I hope Snow has one more transaction to make shortly that will show his fan base and young team that he is serious about winning – THIS year.

  13. avatar CC says:

The quicker we drop the puck for the home opener the quicker I can get over not making any major moves to improve the lineup. I said major.

Roenick is right to warn us about injuries to our slight guys. There’s not much another trainer (a former Isles trainer) can do about it. But at least Snow added someone to the directory to make it look like he tried. The new guy is probably working for minimum wage like just about everyone else there.

  14. avatar fred says:

sounds like he’s really blown away by Grabner’s talent. That was excellent.

  15. avatar Steven says:

I agree 9. I love the rebuild but Garth needs to make one or two deals before the season to move things along. The Isles have the picks, prospects and cap space to bring in one or two guys to move things along.

  16. avatar charlie says:

Loved hearing from JR even though he can sometimes be a clown. He shoots pretty straight.

I read during the playoffs that he missed a major radio interview because he wans’t done having lunch. Even though he just got off the treadmill or was making whooppee I appreciate him still taking your call CB.

I think you have now interviewed everyone elsein the game since the credential thing. Good to see everyone else has the respect for you and wasn’t fooled by Snow’s act.

  17. avatar NC Dan says:

Slow and Steady will payoff? when is this going to happen-we have been slow and steady for the last 10 years or so

  18. avatar Kbelanger33 says:

Garths a wheeler and dealer?! C’mon im not asking for guys to come on and bash him, but that is just flat out rediculous and not credible.

  19. avatar Davidnyc says:

Any chance you can optimize your video for the iPhone?

  20. avatar Steven says:

I almost fell of my chair with that one 15. I’m glad I was not the only one who did not miss it.

  21. avatar kevin morris says:

good stuff! NC Dan. Weve been slow and steady for 4 years… if even. This is the years were gonna see a big leap in the wins column. Will we make the playoffs? I hope. I think we can. but if we dont, were still gonna get betetr and betetr every year until were finally holding that Stanley Cup once again. Go isles

  22. avatar Zarley says:

Most important thing was the injury talk.Bad luck, maybe bad ice and plenty of players who are not big and strong and never will be. It should be cause for concern.

  23. avatar David in Lynbrook says:

When JR talked aout Garth as a wheeler dealer, I assume he was talking about their poker games. Either that or throwing darts and getting one Moulson for every 20 Bachmans and Bentivoglios and Trevor Smiths.

  24. avatar Nick says:

Garth Snow gets more praise than any perennial last place GM in the history of pro sports. He owes you CB

  25. avatar Tommy says:

The Rolston comment was important. His leadership and skill, assuming he’s healthy, should give us what Weight was unable to.

  26. avatar Newman says:

JR was multi-tasking – running, giving an interview and being nice to Snow so NBC doesn’t lose access. Oh wait, the Islanders have one game total on NBC/Versus.

  27. avatar Patty says:

I’ll take a former great player’s opinion of the team over most fans anyday. Thanks for the interview JR and CB

  28. avatar robert says:

JR must know what he is talking about. after all saying snow is a wheeler dealer certainly shows me he knows what he is talking about. if i just mentioned a very small percentage of the unbelieveable deals snow keeps on making it would take me hours and hours.

  29. avatar KOkid21 says:

    Best American Center ever!

  30. avatar Erika says:

Yikes!!??! You guys need to chill. To me, a “wheeler dealer” is someone who is shrewd and gets back more than he gives up, as opposed to someone who makes 1 pointless trade after another simply to avoid boredom. Garth has picked up quite a few players that can propel us to the next level without giving anyone up. I am sure he would pull the trigger on a trade if it made sense, but tell me….who would you guys trade off our team to get a top D-man? Please don’t give me silly trades like Di Pietro for Doughty! Seriously who is out there that is available? Garth is doing pretty well in accumulating talent, but what the Islanders really need is a P.R. pro to help them with their image around the league…..We may know someone!

  31. avatar Jzimm says:

No way, 25. That would go to Pat LaFontaine.

  32. avatar Walt says:

    What about Mike Modano? Jzimm.

  33. avatar Jon Gimps says:

Nice job CB I’m really enjoying these previews I think JR is a great analyst and a straight shooter.

Loved his bits on Grabner, and coming to the island as a player. His response to all the injury problems was an honest one.

Ticking the days off on my calendar, thanks for making the days before the first puck drop that much easier. Hearing other hockey professionals talk about the team from outside our typical media outlets in a positive way is always appreciated.

  34. avatar The New Isles GM says:

    CB,

While I appreciate any NHL insider coming on to talk Islanders hockey, I feel that it’s the same old story with the Islanders asking the same old questions. When will our goaltending situation sure up? Will we be healthy this year? Will Garth make any trades that significantly improves this hockey team (Ryan Smythe type deal). Yes, Roenick does a good job pumping up our youth but so does everyone. Yes, our goaltending situation could look like Phoenix at the moment, so things aren’t that terrible. But the fact still remains we still have some glaring holes in the roster that will make this team a playoff team and make this team a bubble-lottery pick team. In fact, I’d be happy just to reach the bubble this year and not always feel like we’re in the bottom 5. With Bailey still unsigned, is there some actual trade about to go down for that big D we were promised? This summer has been very confusing for Isles fans….Looking forward to another CB-BC segment.

  35. avatar Paul says:

Wheeler dealer? Lol! Stick to reality.

  36. avatar Paul says:

#30….I would trade Bailey, PA, Dehann, next years pick. It is not for fans to decide who is available. That is for Snow, and this rebuild will go nowhere without the proper veteran support. Not vets at the end of their career. Snow is failing these kids big time.

  37. avatar shlo says:

Butch Goring in one of his comments about the injuries was that today’s players train year round, they do not give their body a chance to heal during the off season. It is true for the smaller guys as JR said, everybody else is bigger, they’ll get hurt.

  38. avatar BIGSAVE77 says:

If and I mean if we stay healthy I see no reason why we don’t make the playoffs or fall short by a point or two. It all depends on goaltending. Our forwards can flat out score goals like I haven’t seen in New York in a long long time. Our defense if healthy is decent enough. It just depends on Capuano, will he be willing to bench DiPietro if he isn’t performing.

  39. avatar Winning says:

Id be suprised if the isles see the playoffs more then once in the next 5 years. So would tavares and his agent.

  40. avatar Jzimm says:

LaFontaine was better than Modano. Mike Modano was very good, but was a compiler. LaFontaine was faster, stronger, and more willing to battle than Modano was.

  41. avatar Erika says:

O.K. Paul, so who would you want in return for those players? You sure as hell are not getting a top D-man! Also what I mean by “available” is that the other team is willing to part with a certain player. Right now, except for some middle to lower tier D-men making a s—load of money I don’t see who we would want, do you? I do agree with you that Garth needs to help the young core with some solid high profile players and not just rely on the draft alone. Let’s start thinking of who we want on the Island and posting our ideas. Hopefully the powers that be can be influenced by their loyal fan base.

  42. avatar MoreDraftPicks says:

With a bunch of young talent poised to make their mark in the next few years,
Garth DOES have the ability to make a major impact trade. He would have to have the cojones to fail if any of the players/picks amount to something. But I dont buy the “who is he gonna trade” nonsense. No one is untouchable on this team and if he waves bye bye to a DeHaan Okposo, Bailey..and some picks to IMPROVE, take a chance!!

  43. avatar Nics21 says:

    Amen Erika
