PRACTICE REPORT FOR OCT 31st

by Kevin Schultz on October 31st, 2011 at 11:12 am

News and notes from today’s practice at Iceworks. Follow me on Twitter for up to the minute updates.

Quotes from Nino Niederreiter on today’s practice, his first returning from injury:

On how he’s doing:

“I feel great… Today was pretty much back to normal.”

On having to watch the team for nine games:

“It was definitely frustrating, but I had to think positive and the season is long. I just took it day by day and now we are here.”

How close he thinks he is to being able to play:

“I don’t know. Had the first practice today with the team… We have to take it day by day. Whenever coach thinks I’m ready, I’ll be ready.”

1:14pm: Coach Cap also mentioned that the day off for MacDonald and Tavares were normal maintenance days. Evgeni Nabokov is still day-to-day. For MacDonald, it is another day off probably to keep the hip he injured last season as fresh as possible. Capuano said there was no injury to Tavares, simply a day off.

1:00pm: As reported by everyone on Twitter, the Islanders have placed Trevor Gillies on waivers. If Gillies clears — and he should — his next stop is Bridgeport. This move is likely to make room for Nino Neiderreiter’s return to the lineup later this week. Nino skated in his first full practice today… Coach Capuano would not comment as to when or where Nino will play when he returns.

11:11am: Tavares not on the ice today along with Andy MacDonald. Will have to ask coach about Tavares later. Nino is on the ice and skating with Moulson and Parenteau on the first line. DiPietro and Montoya are in opposite nets with Nabokov not on the ice today.

NEW SITE DESIGN

As you can see, we have a new site design today. The design is to make the site, part of the SNY blog network, mesh with the rest of the network. Constructive feedback is always appreciated. If you notice any bugs or glitches, please let us know.

THREADED COMMENTING!

With the new design brings improvements! We now have threaded commenting. What this means is that you can now reply to specific comments. So, if you want to respond to the post, simply scroll to the bottom of a post and comment as usual. However, if you want to reply to someone’s comment on a post specifically you can now do that easily. On the old site, you might be comment #50 and you would have to shout up from the bottom of the comment thread to #6 if you wanted to respond to the sixth comment. Now, simply click the “reply” link under comment #6, and your comment will show up directly under theirs and you can have a conversation with them.

SOCIAL MEDIA

We are, like, soooo 2011 now. You’ll notice that at the bottom of each post there are links to like to the post on Facebook, Tweet it and if you click “share” there are a ton of other social media sites to share us with.

  2. avatar isles22isles says:

I understand why the format, and layout of the website may have needed to updated.

Also, I like most Isles fans, really appreciate you keeping this Islander Fan website and forum alive….

    But…..

This new format is not that great. It’s choppy, not that user freindly, nor is it visually appealing. The former format was all these things. Please consider reviewing.

    Thanks.

    Go Isles!!!

    Go IPB!!!

  3. avatar mike says:

This new format suckkkks please fix! !!!

  4. avatar Hishutzi Skorz says:

The fact that Moulson and Parenteau are “on the first line” says it all!

  5. avatar Numbers65 in Ohio says:

Hopefully this is to see where the best chemistry is amongst these 3 to help decide which 2 will stick on the line with Tavares. Since none of the 3 is Center I don’t think this line can fly as is…
Giving the new format a chance, but I am on PC, it must work for all apps…
    Let’s Go Islanders!!!

  6. avatar Brian G says:

Trevor Gillies on waivers….I guess someone will be called up or Nino will be activated.

  7. avatar Patience says:

    I hope it’s Haley!

  8. avatar isles stay positive says:

I like the new format. Needs the Islanders logo somewhere though.

  9. avatar Isle Be Damned says:

looks like Metsblog now. Not a fan.

    hopefully Tavares isn’t hurt.

  10. avatar Gene F says:

i really don’t like the new format. the old one was much better.

  11. avatar joeg says:

    Pick up Avery!

  12. avatar BanGarth says:

I hope Garth is trading for a defensive heavyweight.

  13. avatar Bob E. says:

can you remove this Reply feature. It makes for difficult read of website.

Nino might be as spark this team needs. Bench Moulson for game. Remind that he has to score and play too.

  14. avatar claude says:

matt moulson is constantly turning his back to the play inside defensive zone. I never understood how this guy got back to back 30. Unless Isles can turn this around, dollars to doughnuts, this guy nets no more then twenty of Tavares’s sloppy seconds
I do hope Garth is working the phones . If he thinks Nino is saving grace, he’s deluded.
Keep nabby, streit ,jt, hamonic, macdonald and nielson. Everybody else is just bait

    • avatar DD says:

I think Moulson might have an injury he doesn’t want known (cuz he wants to play). He hasn’t been himself this season and that’s the only thing I can think of for a reason why.

  15. avatar Lum_NY says:

I follow the site on my iPhone n the new format sucks. Please go back to the old.

  16. avatar GOOWY says:

where are the links to puck daddy, lighthouse and islanders official website?

i dont often comment, but i do read them regularily. i don’t like this format for comments. difficult to read.

  17. avatar Dan says:

    Great new look.

    Keep it going.

  18. avatar corey says:

Hopefully Nino is close to getting back. With Gillies in Bridgeport, no one on any other teams is gonna want to mess with him. A few years ago when Witt was down there you definitely saw the opposing players give him some respect and stayed away from him. Also the new design is ok, but being able to reply to other peoples comments is great

  19. avatar Gene F says:

Nino is not the solution, not even close to be a solution. The new format sucks

  20. avatar Real hockey fan says:

.. New format is very choppy and difficult to manueaver around, im not a big fan

.. I hope they bring up Haley or another physical player, (with Gillies down) these games are so boring and unwatchable, sad to say but its true

  21. avatar Joe in Massapequa says:

It is amazing how soft this team looks compared to the end of last season. The top two lines should have at least one forward who doesn’t mind mixing it up and throwing their body around. PA does a good job in the corners and on the forecheck creating space for Moulson and Tavares. I just wished they had a little more grit on that line. I always hoped KO would turn into that player with the grit on the second line but he is the last person in a scrum and seems to avoid contact more often than not. Matt Martin has impressed me a lot this season and his hands will only get better. If he nets 10 we all should be happy. I am on board with bringing Haley up to play on the third line in place of Comeau. I know Comeau has scored 20 in the past but something seems missing from his game and he doesn’t seem hungry. The fourth line is ok as is and the D has been surprisingly decent. Nino will find his way into the lineup but should get 15 minutes a game or else he might fall into the Bailey category as being rushed. All this IMO

Kevin – I like the format of the new website adn I am sure everyone else will soon like it. As it is with everything, change takes a while to get used to. Thanks for the updates and LGI.

  22. avatar Fred says:

I don’t mean to offend anyone’s taste but here are my thoughts:

You should add a border between the main content and the background.

Remove the wordpress meta block, change the CSS on the nested comments bullet so they actually appear next to the comment, re-design the logo, or text for ipb, or whatever that is (outer glow and drop shadow aren’t what they used to be).

The article titles should be differentiated from the article body itself, so should the sub-heading. Also take it easy with the blue, this looks a bit 1997.

The SNY hover doesn’t work in Google Chrome, it shows but you can’t select a site, the drop down vanishes when the mouse pointer is moved off the top tab.

  23. avatar Erika tencic says:

I’m not loving this format, but then again, I’m willing to give it a few days to see if I can get used to it. Glad we will finally see Nino, but Not at the expense of Gillies. Why not send some of the old, slow and useless cast offs we acquired to the minors instead?

  24. avatar KEVIN says:

Love the new format. Please continue to include all info and even the most minute details. Many of us fans do not live in NEW YORK and it is our only access to inside information. Thanks
