LINEUP CHANGES
With Micheal Haley up, the scratches for tonight will be Nino Niederreiter, Brian Rolston and Marty Reasoner. These were the lines yesterday at practice:
Moulson-Tavares-Parenteau
Grabner-Nielsen-Okposo
Comeau-Reasoner-Pandolfo
Martin-Bailey-Niederreiter, Ullstrom
My guess would be that Haley slides into the fourth line center spot and Bailey will move up to the third line. So you may have a fourth line of Martin – Haley – Ullstrom.

MONTOYA BACK FOR THE WEEKEND?
Today, Capuano said that Montoya is close to returning. The sooner, the better. Kevin Poulin is getting quite the workload in Bridgeport, as he started all three of the Sound Tigers games last weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Of course, it’s also better for Nilsson to progress in Bridgeport away from the bright lights and 5-0 shellackings where the defense checks out for the night.

Kevin…I’ll bet a more likely 4th line tonight is Comeau-Haley-Pandolfo. At least 2/3 of Ullstrom-Bailey-Martin looked ok the other night, and I think it makes sense to keep them together. No way Pandolfo should be anything but 4th line if he’s in the lineup.

So, if the argument for keeping Nino out of the Pitt game was that he played 6 games in 9 days, does that mean the excuse is now 6 games in 11 days? If so, we’re now keeping our “fragile” players out of the lineup to avoid playing every other day.
Give me a break. Nino’s clearly another in a line of Isles who are injured behind the Iron Snow-wall of Information. This whole franchise – from Wang and Snow down to the ticket reps – is a damned joke. I wish I could be a fly on the wall if new management came in and the first thing they did was purge Snow. Sending Nino back the Portland can hurt also as the competition would be so easy for him that he’ll start picking up lazy habits, he can’t go to Bridgeport for the rest of the season due to the OHL-NHL agreement. I think the Isles can loan him back to the bridge in another month for two weeks only, he can, and should play in the Worlds, then they can send him down to the Bridge at the end of the OHL season round St Patty’s day where he can play the balance of the AHL season and playoffs. popping a 19 year old into a floundering team and asking him to perform above his head…….sound familiar?

This is nothing against Cap, but when he started Montoya at the beginning of the season I thought he had control over the on ice roster. Apparently not. THis team is becoming unwatchable already and I am becoming resolved to the fact that I will need to revel in the Isles success of my teenage years and just forget everything else. They say even a stopped clock is right twice a day and a blind squirrel can still happen upon a nut from time to time. Unfortunately, the Islanders are not even in this class. In fact, this is almost as farcical as the Cleveland Indians in Major League. Just can’t figure out who is really to blame, but in the end, DOES IT REALLY MATTER?

Isles need 3 real superstars one being a #1 center man and sniper the other being a hard healthy d man like WEBBER. Nino plays like Brett Lindros by the way . He is on for every goal and his skating has been sloppy. The only good thing is his size I would drop him back on d a couple of games. Considering garth not making moves cap has to think outside the box to win games.
Isles need a real checking center 6 “2 or 3 , a # 1 center a sniper with speed and a big solid norris trophy d man. I think 15 to 20 mil should cover that.

I mean come on together K.O. and Josh are a combined -13 with a whole whopping 1 goal and 5 assists. Comeau is only -11 with 0 points… What a powerhouse lineup we have. Way to go Snowman… Its like watching Major League except its not even remotely funny….

In the Flyers game I’m looking for the following 3 signs that there still is a pulse in this team:
- KO shakes the Okpussy label by getting involved physically
- Haley gets the (small) crowd buzzing by mixing it up
- Streit and JT combine for a power play goalWith all of these we might still lose 6-1, but there will at least be some signs of life that have been missing for quite a while

If Staios was playing third pairing duties he’d be doing a lot better. He’s actually made some pretty good saves despite skating like he’s in mud. He’s not bad just doing more then he should be…. Mottau I agree done, pandolfo oye done, and Reasoner wth I actually expected him to do something… he’s barely noticeable so idk if hes even winning face offs at this point…

coaches do things that us fans wouldn’t expect…Alex Semin, with a salary of 6.7 M/yr was a healthy scratch for the capitals the other night because he simply isn’t bringin’ it every night…
so Nino doesnt HAVE to be hurt..although I dont think there is a lack of effort there, but all I am saying is Cappy has a motive to his madness and wether it be good bad or flawed, we don’t know the answer and this is how rumors start lol…just let it play out.

We are in midst of a “youth movement” but we are the 3rd oldest team in the league per THN. Which is it? Half kids, and 38 year old slobs looking at the last pay day. And two kids sit each game and watch these thiefs steal their ice and pick up a check. I mean paycheck, certainly not a body check or back check. Wang doesn’t allow physical play here.

What are you all talking about? It doesn’t make any sense to play Nino vs. Philly. Why would you want a big, hard hitting, skilled guy to play against Philly when you can have Jay Pandalfo strike fear into them?
It would be one thing to be bad and have faith things are headed in the right direction but no one expected them to be this bad. Snow’s moves this summer showed he still doesn’t get it. He has never acquired the type of d-men they need (except for the draft), they turned their back on toughness. This shows me they don’t have a good understanding of the players they have. Our Core is exceptionally soft, much more so then other teams skilled players. They need to feel safe to perform at their best. Snow doesn’t set that environment. Don’t get me wrong I am sure Wang ordered them to revert to coward hockey but we’ve had to endure it for years. Wanna know why Isles always seem to lead the NHL in injuries? Small players, terrible ice, and other teams know they can rough them up all they want and nothing will happen.
Why does Snow look at his roster and say “I can win with this”. Anyone can look at that D and know you cannot win anything.
We keep hearing Snow has had permission to spend what ever he needed to, make whatever moves etc. for years. Either we are lied to and WANG won’t allow him to or Snow doesn’t have the skill or the confidence necessary.
The Jerseys are OK but I think they would look better with white where grey is and maybe one less color in the mix.

KO was out all year. Actually – Wang was offering him up as Captain. I think he can still turn it around – but he is not the same guy who used to hit people and go to the net. Nino? Best thing for him – go to Portland in WHL and own it. He is not ready just yet. Play DP till he can’t stand up anymore….. His hiding on the bench during the Crosby game – means he is rested to play 3 games in 4 nights. He will get lit up like the stiff he is.
Haley will help add some pride back to the lineup. Gotta get Taveras going. He is working so hard – puck has to go in for him. The big question is – how long before the FLyers score the first goal – how many shots ? How long ?

As much as I like moulson, I don’t understand why his spot on the first line is seemingly cemented in place. Granted, having JT with him definitely gets the most out of him and i’m sure raises his game… but the downside, i believe, is that tavares isn’t getting to play as well as he can and therefore brings his level and his points total down. if you look at the so-far success of the oilers, they’re getting a lot of out of a line with 3 first round picks: hall, nugent-hopkins, and eberle. isles could easily have a similar top quality productive young line, see the following lines as i would arrange them:
Nino-JT-Grabner
Martin-Bailey-PA
Rolston-Neilsen-Okposo
Pandolofo-Reasoner-Haley
(Notice: no comeau, no ullstrom – although i love how ullstrom played his first game… also, eventually rhakshani will be back, wonder if that’ll skew anything…)Defense is a whole other story with much less options unless they’re willing to bring up de haan, donovan, ness, katic (when healthy), wishart, or reese… at least these guys can skate and learn, as opposed to staios, eaton, mottau, and jurcina… i’d rather see one of the kids make a mistake on D than see mottau toss it up the middle of the ice again.. ppl might not expect him to be fast, but he should at least make the right plays bc he’s supposed to be a role model… let the kids make those mistakes, at least i can stomach them better then.

There’s no reason the top line should be immune from criticism and change. They’ve been, by far, the best line on the team, but all things considered, they haven’t been very good. I like putting Nino -perhaps even Okposo with JT. And Martin shouldn’t be buried on the 4th line. I’d put the quality of his play just behind JT, Neilsen and PA.

i actually like this lineup..I think Pandawful has gotta be swapped out, but not necessarily for Comeau, I think you put Gillies in there and have a solid 4th line thats physical

Yes okposo is struggling but he’s our future, not rolston, so they gotta let him play even if he isn’t playing as well as we know he can. Rolston in as a short-term fix is like putting a bandaid on a broken arm – on the surface it looks like it’s trying to help but does nothing to repair the damage…

This should be another slobberknocker. Until the isles play tough hockey again they will continue to be walked all over. We need young players like Evander Kane, Chris Stewart and Cal Clutterbuck not Bailey,Okposo, Comeau (was rooting for him but he has turned off his physical play). Those are young passionate players. Garth do some swapping with those teams and also bring in Suter or Weber during the offseason.

the reason this team has no identity . they have no solid character vets . let alone a veteran superstar that can produce . The idea is to go in to a season thinking your wining the CUP or making the playoff’s .

As far as the team’s performance on the ice is concerned, he is guilty as charged. From keeping Milbury around year after year to “the committee” to handing the reins over to a backup goalie, Wang’s moves have consistently befuddled everyone in the hockey world who has any sense of what works in the NHL and what doesn’t. Trade Luongo and Chara? Sign Yashin and DP to epoch-length contracts? Pass on Parise to draft Robert Nilsson? Trade down to draft Bailey? Hire Scott Gordon? Each time the Islanders make a significant move regarding coaching or player personnel, the rest of the NHL and the hockey media shakes their collective heads in stunned disbelief. The best statistic to put out there is that the team has won six playoff games (three in one week) since Wang bought the team. If that’s your beef with him, you have every right to criticize. But you also have a responsibility to be fair and to have some recognition of reality.
That reality is simple. If it weren’t for Charles Wang, the Isles would have been long gone. By any fair estimation, the man has lost over $200 million since purchasing the team in 2000. You shout “sell the team,” but what right-minded businessman would buy it as currently constituted? You really think there are hordes of rich Long Island investors just waiting to snap up a consistently noncompetitive, media-invisible, on-ice-joke of a franchise that plays in a 42 year old undersized arena that was obsolete the day it was built? Really? Where are they? Couple all that with the fact that Wang has now put forward two massive plans to solve the arena issue (much of both at his own expense), only to be shot down by a Town Board once and county voters the other time, and it means that if you think screaming “Wang must go” will result in a successful franchise playing on Long Island you are smoking something you shouldn’t.

It’s to bad a wealthy hockey dummy saved the team.A the very least, Wang must hear the SNOW MUST go chants. There’s no doubt about that!

IF WANG SELLS THE TEAM, it will stay in the NY Metro area…NY will not lose a professional sports team, it is that simple. The TV contract alone is reason to own the team, when the team starts winning consistently (who knows when that happens) it will be a very profitable venture.
It is simply a waiting game to see how the specifics pan out.

i dont understand how wang makes money on the TV contract. As an ilander fan the contract with MSG is infuriating as 25% of scheduled islander games are broadcast on channel 414 which happens to be in low definition. watching professional sports on TV in anything other that HD is a disgrace. It seems the organization cheaps out any way it can. Please explain the economics of your TV contract theory so I may regain some hope of the Ilses staying in NY.

I don’t buy into “they don’t care” either, but I buy the fact that our owner and G.M. have no clue on how to develop young players. Inviting them to dinner and making them your “friend” did not work for D.P., nor does it work for anyone. Our players read the paper, they talk to family and friends, they know how little respect the Islander team gets because of our owner. They are probably playing poorly because they are hoping to be traded.
That said, The uni’s are not that bad. They would be better with the N.Y logo with the Islander puck. The Font looks small and lame, like our D! -
There are no real examples of good third jerseys and these turd jerseys being worn by guys that should pay to wear them …. Minus a few namely JT and Martin.

Good article in today’s post how this is most likely is Parise last year in Jersey and how Lou may move him in Feb at the trade deadline. Still want Martin on JT’s line. I agree with sisangus 100%. Wang saved the team, cannot blame him for trying to grow a young team and being patient. I do believe we may need a coaching change though. Kids are not buying into Cappy’s system. What would have happend if we took Fowler instead of Nino? I think we would have been more stable at defense.
