Update: Kyle Okposo to sit so Nino gets in the lineup. Message sender right there.
What a difference a month makes. The high point of the Islanders season thus far was a win at home against the Rangers on October 15th. Almost a month later, the Islanders have added only one win and a bunch of not much else. Meanwhile, the Rangers are on a six game win streak and 9-3 since the mid-October meeting. The polar opposites meet tonight at the Nassau Coliseum.
Nino Niederreiter will likely make his season debut tonight although Capuano was not confirming or denying this to the media this morning. He also would not talk about whose spot Nino would be taking if he were to play (and you can be assured he is playing, given the struggles of half the roster).
Capuano was willing to talk about the goaltenders, though. Evgeni Nabokov will be in net tonight with Al Montoya backing up. In Nabokov’s six starts this year, the Islanders are 1-4-1. It’s easy to say that the team isn’t playing well in front of Nabby but that would imply that they’ve played better in front of the other two goalies. DiPietro and Montoya have a combined three wins.

Roloson’s play for the Isles was excellent when he was traded, and Snow only managed to get Wishart in return – a player whom Snow recently put on waivers and no other team in the League even sniffed at.

I agree. Okposo should be scratched. Two reasons: one, he’s not performing; two, it will send out a message to the team that if one of the more established players with an “A” on his jersey can get scratched, no one should feel entitled to a spot in the lineup.

In all fairness the first line will stay intact and they should because they are he only line that hustles, and actually scores, if a replacement were to happen with the first line I would prefer nino taking moulsons spot. And dropping moulson to second line with franz and PA(we will then see if they are the 30/20 goal scorers people think they are, which they are not without JT.
But knowing the islanders none of these cases will happen, so as Lon as nino plays with Martin I’ll be happy. Last thing our team needs is to have our “#1″ prospect getting jumped.

Yes, agree that KO is not living up to the “A” and should be scratched. Also, what does Tim Wallace need to do to get a shot. Is he a diamond in the rough or another Brad Lauer (63 goals in 58 AHL games/2 in 33 NHL). He can’t be any worse than what we have been playing. Nabakov is a stupid move as well. Lets play the guy who wants to leave more than the guy sitting who is getting pissed (and then there is the guy in the box who still thinks he’s Patrick Roy). God Hates Us Again!!!! Just win…1940!!!!

I am a big fan of Okie but he looks awful this year. This is the guy who was talking up his summer of working out and working on his game. Maybe his golf game at this point. Or, it may be just that Kyle is no better than a 3rd line player which may be the case anyway when kids like Strome and whoever we draft in the top 3 this year come up.

poor verbage my apologies, but you get the point. Old men = slow. This might have flew back in the old NHL, but speed dominates the game now. If you aren’t taking toughness out of the lineup anyone slow should go.

I don’t get the demand for Montoya to play. I like him, but its not like he’s playing lights out. He gave up 3 goals in relief of Nabby and 4 goals in the game he started, which despite the high save total, he didn’t play all that great. I think all 3 goalies have played relatively well and the focus of this distaste should be on the team in front of them. Lack of offense and a mediocre at best defense in front of them is not helping. Hopefully Nino can give them a shot in the arm tonight. Also, I like the way Haley came up last year and brought some fight for this team, but have you checked his stats so far this year? Do we really need a guy that’s gonna sit on the bench for 45 minutes and come out to fight? If you want to see someone brought up, I would much rather see DiBo or Ullstrom, both have been producing.

Glad to see someone else gets it. Montoya has definitely been good for the Isles, but if he becomes #1 you will start to see more of his flaws. DP really is the guy that has the ability to carry the team. I’m not sure if he can still do it, but he’s their best shot. And same for Haley. Loved his grit, but he’s a 3-4 minute a game player. Not worth it. They need to find someone who can give the minutes. Martin is close, but really an enforcer.

I wish half this team could be scratched. Especially Okposo, Bailey, Comeau, Rolston, Reasoner and Pandolfo. They are the reason why this team sucks. We knew the defense was pretty lousy outside of Streit and were probably counting on too much from Hamonic and MacDonald. But it’s the almost complete lack of secondary scoring that is absolutely killing this team. Each of Okposo, Bailey, Comeau, Rolston and Reasoner should at minimum be able to chip in 10-15 goals apiece over the course of the season. They have 3 goals total so far as a group!!! That is absolutely pathetic.

This game is huge, if they don’t come out swinging then all is lost. I wouldn’t sit Okposo, Baily or Comeau. Sit Rolston or Pandolfo. I don’t think sitting the kids is going to help. I do think that Cappy needs to tinker with the lines. If I were Cappy I would have them like so.

interesting line combos, but i like Martin on JT’s line with Grabs, oddly enough. I have always said JT needs players with speed and playmaking abilities around him, so this would traditionally be out of the flavor I would like to taste, but with the lack of secondary scoring, I think this isnt that bad…however, you gotta roll 4 lines this way and that means less ice for JT…can we bring up haley and send down Pandolfo already…cmon.
I think you’d be better served double shifting JT and playing with 3 Center’s than having Pandolfo fill a roster slot…plus haley can fight and get under the skin of anyone we play..just try it? just the tip?

I don’t think you need to roll 4 lines. They need to play the best players as often as possible. I would love Haley and Gillies to be in the lineup. I don’t care how little they play. This team has NO identity.
I also feel strongly that Okposo should play the point with Streit on the PP. Kyle needs to shoot more, a lot more.-
Using 3 lines would tire them out. You can mix and match the lines all you want. It is not going to change the lack of talent or desire on the team.

Why would you demote PA to the 4th line? He’s one of about 6 players on this team contributing any offense whatsoever.

PA is slow and makes too many poor plays. I like him but someone needs to be placed there. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have him on the PP which is where he excels.

I think he is the one player outside of JT that actually looks better than last season. He might make some bad plays here and there, but most of the other forwards don’t make ANY plays. He deserves top six minutes on this team right now as Okposo, Bailey Comeau, Roston and Reasoner do NOTHING. They don’t hit, they don’t generate any offense, they aren’t fast, they don’t shoot the puck. They do nothing. PAP is an All-Star compared to them so far this season.

Sorry NSCanada. The only thing Trevor Gilles has in common with Clark Gilles is the last name. There are few players in the entire league NOW that you can compare with Clark Gilles, yet alone someone on the Isles. The Islanders issues this year are not because they don’t have a thumper to play on the JT line. It’s because guys who were given new contracts aren’t playing with enough desperation and grit.

I really hope i’mthe wrong butw this game has recipe for disaster written all over it. I give it ten minutes before avery slams into Nabby w no penalty and no immediate retaliation whatsover. That should set a good tone for half the building of Rags fans to feed off of. Can’t afford to give up the first, our confidence is nil. Any word whether Haley called up? He pummeled Avery last time they met and made him a non factor. Okposo, comeau, and bailey need to step the f%#k up big time tonight. Why do so many people on this site dislike PAP? Maybe he’d be a 4th liner on the Bruins or Canucks, but on this team with 2-goal Rolston, 1-goal Bailey, 0-goal Okposo, 0-goal Reasoner and 0-point Comeau, Parenteau is a top six forward. He’s one of the few players that has actually improved from last season and he was the star of the game in the Isles one win in the past month. What does this guy have to do?

this is the game we ALWAYS lose to the rangers. so im preparred for a 5-1 beat down. the rangers will score within the first 10 minutes and it ll be all downhill from there. gaborik is going to have a multi goal game. dubinsky will score along with 2 PP goals. the isles will get less than 30 shots on goal and go 0-4 on the PP. our lone goal will come when we are down 4-0.

Look at the standings. The Ilses have to leap frog or do better than at least 8 teams ahead of them. They need to perform over .700 hockey from now till the end of season just to get an 8th seed. Com’on does anyone think this Isles are that good to be .700?
Wang needs to sell. Just put it on the market. Having the isles on the market gives this orgnaization some hope (even with the risk of moving). The culture and optics of this organistion has been runied. IT CANNOT BE FIXED!!-
This is the magic of overtime losses in the NHL. It can provide the illusion that the lousy team you root for still has a chance to make the playoffs.

Really. Bailey being terrible is not a surprise. Comeau being awful is a little more surprising, but he’a always been wildly inconsistent. Plus, neither of those players are necessarily in the long-term plans. However, Okposo’s passive, seemingly-disinterested play is a shock. Are there really going to be 4 more years of this?

Hopefully this doesn’t do more damage to KO. I don’t think it’s fair to him. Hopefully ElNino brings it tonight. Again, I question Cappy line combo of Nino, Reasner and Comeau. Just don’t see much happening with this combo.

Okposo has been absolutely terrible and deserves to be scratched. At least Bailey and Comeau carry the puck into the offensive zone once in a while (they don’t know what to do with it when they get there but they do occasionally get there). Okposo has brought absolutely nothing to the table this season. I wanted him to be the next Jarome Iginla as much as anyone. As of right now him being the next Trent Hunter would be light-years better than where he’s at right now.

2 players that would have helped this team more so than Pandolfo, Rolston and Reasoner up front are Jason Arnott and Jamie Langenbrunner, both signed with St. Louis this season. I thought originally that Garth was doing a good job at rebuilding the Islanders through the draft, but his ineptitude to surround the youth of this team with a mix of toughness and grit is clearly evident. Look no further than the Boston Bruins roster as an example.

I hope Cappy has a rotating doghouse because there a lot of players who deserve to be benched, besides Okposo and Comeau. How Josh Bailey has not been benched yet is beyond me? Although, Bailey has been a little better of late but not good enough. Comeau def deserved it. This is an epidemic. Even Frans Nielsen seems to have regressed a bit this year. Who has been solid all year? After Tavares and Martin, what forwards have shown up every single game this year. I dont think you can say anybody. Martin and Tavares have been consistant.
If these guys dont show up tonight, Snow needs to start dealing guys or needs to fire Capuano. One or the other. Something has to be done. What is it with this team and November and December?

On another note, I didn’t miss Okposo even a little bit. I can’t believe how far he has fallen. At one point, I thought both he & Bailey would be guys that would be big pieces in turning this franchise around.

Outplayed them amidst ridiculous call after call. Sorry, but you can never make that kind of play up the middle of your zone w 5 minutes left in a tie game. I hope his teammates lambast him and Capuano sits the idiot. Bailey is supposed to be our future??? This guy is invisible almost every game. Hell, even Rolston, Reasoner, and Pandolfo chipped in tonight and they have no business holding a spot on this team. Solid game for the most part but come up short yet again.

This is the problem with anything associated with the Islanders (not counting CB). It’s all bush league and amatuer hour.
You would never read that on a blog for any other sports team. Not even if the blog was Colts vs Dolphins, or Clippers vs Bucks.

Guys, it is plain to see that Capuano has his hands tied or Baileys ass would be benched. Bailey may be the worst fwd to ever don an Islander sweater. The real culprit in all of this is Garth Snow. Nothing is going to change until he is gone. Wang wont fire him so I guess we are stuck with him. I wish I knew a may to get him fired. As far as Bailey goes, Snow is covering his ass for his horrible trade when he passed up on Schenn. Anyone who coaches this team will have their hands tied. That is why we can not hire a real coach because they would laugh at Snow when he tries to control every aspect of the team. Neil Smith sound familar. Snow is basically monopolizing this team with his puppet coaches and reporters who cover this team. Where is he in all of this? Never to be heard from. It really is something. The future is extremely bleak for us. The Snow Must Go movement by all of us is going to have to organized and ruthless.
