PRACTICE REPORT FOR DEC 5

by Kevin Schultz on December 5th, 2011 at 11:44 am

Update: Andy MacDonald has been placed on IR with an expiration date of 2-4 weeks.

Matt Moulson has been named the NHL’s Player of the Week. He had six goals and an assist in three games last week.

Evgeni Nabokov was in net at practice today and I expect that he’ll be on the bench Tuesday.

No news on a call up today. That will likely come tomorrow on game day. No reason to bring up and pay a player for a practice day.

Per Bob McKenzire, Mark Fistric will have a hearing with Brendan Shanahan today.

INJURY UPDATES:
Nino Niederreiter, concussion: No timetable was given for his return. Expect the Islanders to be very cautious with him.

Michael Grabner, groin: Good news here as Capuano said today that Grabner is day-to-day. I would imagine he won’t miss too many games but shouldn’t be in the lineup for the next few.

Rick DiPietro, groin and Andy MacDonald: Both are being re-evaluated today.

I recorded the Isles-Stars game so just in case Brendan Shanahan needs some additional footage showing Fistric clearly airborne on that hit on Nino, I’d be glad to send it off to him. Head shot or not it resulted in a concussion and there is NO justification for intentionally leaving your feet to check while checking a player. Only one way to stop this crap Brendon Consistency…

  2. avatar upstateIsles says:

Shanny needs to be looking at the hit on Nino. There are probably a hundred opinions going both ways on this one…yes, should Nino be more aware of the ice and speed of the game like Butch alluded to..yes. Was Nino defenseless and was the initial contact made to the head..yes, with an Elbow…

the rookie mistake does not trump what Fisty did to Nino..he left his feet and if he hadn’t the hit would have been clean..so face the consequences as a result..I would have to look at the video again to tell if the Ref missed the call on the ice or if he was in a bad position to tell if Fisty left his feet. Many hits result in the hitter going flying up in the air like this one…so all the people wanting the Ref suspended may want to consider the angle he had..not saying that it shouldn’t be looked at, but with the speed in the NHL, it is a tough call.

    • “Consider the angle” the ref had? Referee #34, I believe, was right there and appeared to be staring at the damn play while it was happening.

Tough call? Not that one. Ref blew it.

      • avatar upstateIsles says:

you’re an idiot.. I said CONSIDER THE ANGLE HE HAD..referring to the ref yes..I believe it was a penalty obviously..all biased opinions aside..it was an elbow..NHL.COM’s article declaring the Fistric would face a disciplinary hearing tomorrow states “FISTRIC RECEIVED A 2 MIN ROUGHING PENALTY ON THE PLAY”…really? because I’m pretty sure it was only a coincidental offset to one of Matt Martin’s 2 Roughing calls on the play..

and excuse me for not being able to watch you tube at work…I checked it out on my lunch break from home and yes the Ref was in position to make the call..

jump down a fellow isles fans throat why dont ya, chief.

  3. avatar upstateIsles says:

get well soon 25..the twisted wrister in Chicago was niceee

  4. avatar goose says:

    patrick o’sullivan!

  5. avatar Steve from Jersey says:

Isles play Dallas again real soon so taht should be an intresting game.

  6. avatar JTizzle says:

Does anyone really think that DiPietro’s groin is injured. Look at the video and you see his knee flexes back. See Ya Useless!

  7. avatar The New Isles GM says:

I really wish we stuck Nino down in the WHL for one more year. I hated the way they were handling him and now this, it’s just a huge mistake clean hit or dirty. We had some many freaking wingers this year, and we’re calling guys up as it is. Why did Nino have to play for the Isles this year? He’s not a game breaker. He’s simply a piece of the puzzle. Let him develop…

  8. avatar cjcb says:

The reason to bring player here today for a practice day would be to practice linemates and get a feel for each other before game. I really hope Kevin your explanation as to why nobody is here today isnt the reason the
Isles gave. If they know for sure somebody cant go tomorrow and they wont have enough bodies paying a player a day for practice should NEVER be the excuse.

  9. avatar Brian G says:

4 game suspension for leaving your feet to make a head check sounds about right. Fistric anticipated a big hit was going to be made by leaving his feet.

Is Nabokov ready to come back, Is he being rushed? I thought it was going to be a minimum of 4 weeks. Why not at least call up Poulin for at least the next 2 games considering Bridgeport doesn’t have a game til Saturday. Then activate Nabokov on Sat 12/10…Why rush him back and then he has a setback.

They should just put Nino & DP on IR right away, and make their call-up of: Dibo or Wallace, Cizikas probably won’t get called up b/c he is a center.

  10. avatar EJ1SINCE40 says:

    Hey Kevin!

Folks, is this ANOTHER coincidence on the opposing team taking liberties with our boys WITHOUT Haley or Gillies in there???

It’s sooo obvious, how can the Snowman allow this sh*t to go on??

At least, plug Haley in. Now you got 2 capable skaters with Matty Martin who can go go with anyone..

Especially Haley..and as WE have all said on here, the dude’s got some wheels and skill for a tough SOB.

Better than Reasner, that’s for damn sure..

  11. avatar MCG1 says:

Kevin had to laugh when you mentioned not bringing a player up due to the cost…and it’s because of the building that no free agents want to sign with us, or a player doesn’t want to waive their no trade clasue to come here. What a joke we are!

  12. avatar Sidd.Finch says:

I think a number of people alluded to the fact that Haley or Gillies would not have stopped that check and Dallas cares fairly little about this game. Ftrankly, watching the game, Dallas seems to have played just a little worse than the Islanders. The Isles owned the first 22 minutes of the games (not uncommon for that classic 20 minutes game we have become accustomed to). The Stars stormed back and owned the next 8 minutes or so. From that point on it was a fairly seesaw battle with the Islanders, I mean Matt Moulson, putting the game on his back and carrying us home. By see-saw, I actaully mean rather uninspired. Montoya made a few big saves and if it wasn’t for the little mishandle of the puck with about 30 secs to go, Dallas never really seemed to threaten. Despite their hot early start, without Lehtonen, the Stars are crashing back to earth. Just hope the Isles, or should I say MM-JT-PAP and Monty keep up their hot hands. Not encouraged by Nabby’s return, only 1-5 when he is in net, where as the Isles are playing for Monty.

Glad to see the league will review Fistric tomorrow, but it is a shame that it is academic to the Isles with no significant benefit. Nino will be lost for as long as he will be lost and the Stars will have Fistric back with 2 weeks tops.

  13. avatar The Sick one Six says:

I think DP faked and injury just to get the win. The plan was get the lead then fake injury and have a real goaltender finsih the game to record his WIN…DP’s stats S% .876 and GAA 3.73. Honestly I’d rather have a 6th skater on the whole game!!!!

  14. avatar Mike says:

The ref should also be suspended for a CRAP job!!!!

  15. avatar upstateIsles says:

FISTRIC TO FACE DISCIPLINARY HEARIND TOMORROW

    get it done ShannaMan!

  16. avatar goislesgo105 says:

The Isles are starting to remind me of the team that we saw the second half of last season. They are 0-5 in overtime/shootout. If they had won 2 of those 5 they would be a game under .500 which is about where this team should end up. Still not enough talent on defense. Right now Ricky Red Light is a joke!!This team will never get better as long as Ricky Red Light is on it.

    • avatar isleopine says:

Absolutely right. His current stats and those he posted last season simply demonstrate that he is no longer an NHL caliber goalie and therefore contract or not would not be playing anywhere in the NHL except for Wangs Palace of Misfortune (self-inflicted, I might add).

We have a credible NHL goalie that should be getting 80% of ice time, we have grit and muscle in Haley, who should have made the roster out of camp. And, I know most of you might disagree somewhat, but isnt having Reese instead of Mottau an improvement? Play him, sit Mottau.
JT MM and PA are a thoroughly convincing top line, dont any of you say anything about PA, he is a playmaker pure and simple.
Sure hope Nino the kid will be ok.

  17. avatar Stumpy32 says:

I’m hoping, praying that whatever mojo they found after any real chance at the playoffs vanished last season is what they have now. Crazy to think that, after all the garbage they’ve laid this year, they’re only 6 points from the 8th spot with a game or two in hand on nearly everyone. Totally true that a couple wins in OT or SO would have really helped. Sadly, that ridiculous bonus point is what gets teams into and out of the playoffs now.

  18. avatar MarioGazz says:

On NHL.com this is the story:

Dallas Stars defenseman Mark Fistric will have a disciplinary hearing Tuesday stemming from his hit Saturday on New York Islanders forward Nino Niederreiter.

At 6:08 of the first period, Niederreiter was carrying the puck along the boards in the neutral zone when Fistric stepped up and hit Niederreiter into the boards.

Fistric was given a two-minute minor for roughing.

Wrong , he was given a 2-minute minor for roughing with Martin. Not for the hit.

  19. avatar Tedge77 says:

Garth and Jack wake-up. Thats why you need to carry Haley and Gillies in the line-up. Are you going to wait until someone runs Tavares or Moulson. You have valueable assets on this team and they need to be protected. No one messed with us after penguingate. Matt Martin cannot handle the load by himself.

  20. avatar giz says:

    Wallace an Poulin called up.

  21. avatar Blizz says:

Shanny will suspend him, if he doesnt they are protecting the dumbass refs that missed the call……

  22. avatar IslanderFAN says:

#Isles update: Poulin and Wallace recalled on emergency loan from Bridgeport

  23. avatar Niettermizer says:

The Isles should find some guy named Rather, then they could send out the “60 Minute Line” with Wallace and Reasoner! :)

  24. avatar jeff says:

    YAY!

lets add another pipsqueak softie to this lineup like wallace and wait for another promising young player to be rammed and concussed and career put in jeopardy because teams know they can!

this time it can just as easily be taveras.

and im sure haley will be watching from the press box too going foward because this organization just wont learn and is run by morons

  25. avatar Erika says:

    Who the hell is Wallace?
Something seriously wrong with the rules if a player can leave his feet, give a blatant elbow to the head, cause a concussion, and wait for it….his team gets a power play!
Until the refs start doing their job correctly, the players will have to police themselves.
I am confident that Shanny will hand out a suspension, but he also should talk to the refs and reinforce the fact that head shots of any kind is a penalty. I know calls are sometimes missed, we are all human, but this ref was right there, 2 ft away, starring right at that play! If Nino were Crosby, I would love to know what would have happened.

  26. avatar IslanderFAN says:

    Tim Wallace stats in Bridgeport

    24games 9 G – 11 A – 20 PTS

  27. avatar Claude says:

If it’s real or fake I hope dp realizes that he brings more hurt than help to this team and baring a miracle he should starting thinking about life after hockey.

    • avatar Dk says:

My take on the injury is cappy said he is pulling him and will be riding Al for the next couple of weeks and to save face for him and wang it was decided he hurt his groin.

When you are at the high end a team that may be a playoff bubble team you need everything to break right to make the playoffs. The last thing you can do is wheel DP out there 20 – 30 times or whatever the plan was going in. They are simply throw away games at this point.

  28. avatar Frans Dish says:

Great news that Grabner wont be out for too long. Once A Mac comes back they should send down Mike Mottau. Dylan Reese has looked way better and he deserves the spot so much more.

  29. avatar dork says:

With Amac out we are screwed and tattooed. There is no legit 2nd pairing.
At least we wont have to look at chewbacca on the bench. Stay injured DP.

  30. avatar Dk says:

Mottau is the DP of dmen

  31. avatar D in Big D says:

Call up whoever & maybe we’ll find another diamond in the ruff. The problem will be when these players get healthy will Garth make the correct roster moves.Wishart or Kohn should already be here as a 3rd pairing D-man w/ mottau getting kicked in his a** & shown the door.Heck call em both up & catch Eaton w/ one of those kicks.Team is starting to show signs of what they did last year but keep in mind its all against back up goalies.Garth should pay attention to tough as nails players regardless of position although our immediate need is on the back line.C’mon Wang s**t or get off the pot.A building never won or lost games for any team. The crowd maybe but not the building. You are a brutal owner w/ the way you are handling this team.Start by cutting ties w/ DP.

  32. avatar danfromouteast says:

Hope Wallace does some good but why isn’t cizikas up? His stats are impressive and he’s a face off guy which is always a plus

  33. avatar robert says:

d.p. should be revaluated… in about 12 years. need i say more?

  34. avatar AM says:

New re-alignment is brutal for the Isles. Does create more bad blood but have to be in the Top 4 with Wsh/Pitt/Philly/NYR to make playoffs. Can’t see how we voted for this.

  35. avatar Dean says:

Anybody see the four conference realignment? Not sure what to make of it. When Isles move to Quebec it will throw everything out of wack. I’m predicting no suspension from Shanny. This league spits on the Isles!

  36. avatar Ted says:

Realignment would only help the Islanders if they could be in a conference with Columbus, Anaheim, Carolina, Tampa, Calgary & the Devils…

  37. avatar Al L says:

D in Big D! I assume you are referring to Dustin Kohn. He no longer is Islanders property and is playing in Europe. The next D man in the pecking order at The Bridge is probably Anton Klementyov or Ty Wishart. Neither is going to ever be accused of being the next Slava Fetisov, let alone Kenny Johnson.

  38. avatar Rich L says:

Hey Kevin, isn’t there some old ties between Shanahan, and guys like Roloston, and Weight maybe they can plead the case for suspension of Fistic due to past acquantances as a favor. just asking.

  39. avatar Rich L says:

Guys, I, also love Martins grit, and heart, I also believe he should be wearing the “C” on his chest, but having said that, He is not a heavyweight in this league, and Will get hurt one day taking on the big boys like Chara,Orr,Thornton,Parros and many more. The only one who can make a difference in the “sack” dept. is Gillies, not even Haley can do the job, but as we all know Wang has an aversion to retaining heavyweights on this team, and it’s not only a shame, it may prove disastrous, because either JT, or Moulson may be targeted, by teams with their own “enforcer”.

  40. avatar Rich L says:

Hey Tedge77, yeah Penguingate, we have a bout, er game with them on Saturday, maybe Snow should call up the Charlestown Chiefs along with the Hansens. Hey Snow, please draft Oggie Oglethorpe. lol

    • avatar Tedge77 says:

Rich you can’t deny the swagger they had after that game. Maybe a little foil on the knuckles is what the team needs to play with more confidence

  41. avatar Rich L says:

Hey Yah, and Erika, I looked at the roster of bridgeport because I too thought he may be another smurph, but they have Wallace listed at 6’1 and 207 lbs. but size may not mean anything if he is “soft’

  42. avatar Rich L says:

Is it going to matter much if Wang, and Snow continue to keep the team at cap level and do absolutely nothing to improve the team, all the while planning to move them to KC, Cananda etc. etc? I used to enjoy the older format when 1 through 16 played each other, regardless of which conference, or division they came from
