THE MORNING SKATE: Isles Recall Ty Wishart
And Video of Haley’s Hat Trick
![]() |
Last season, the Islanders traded veteran goaltender Dwayne Roloson to Tampa Bay in December and in a somewhat rare event didn’t get a draft pick in return. Coming from the Lightning was Ty Wishart, a former first round pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2006 and possessing a 6-4/215 frame that the Islanders desperately needed (and still do).
After being assigned to Bridgeport initially, Wishart would get the call to the big club late in the year and played decently. He had 5 points in 20 games with just over a hit and a shot per game. The real surprise was his corsi, easily the best on the team last year among defensemen. 20 games is a small sample but enough to show that he belonged in the organization and, given time, could help the team.
Fast forward to 2011-12 and Wishart was nowhere to be found when the Islanders needed defensive call ups. The first man out of the gate was Dylan Reese. Reese had the most experience by far out of any of the defenders that started the year in Bridgeport, so being the first to get the call early on in the season wasn’t a shocker. As we’ve seen, Reese has handled the role pretty well.
Next up was Calvin de Haan, the prospect with the most potential upside. Again, not an indictment of Wishart to be passed over for de Haan but if the team was going on experience, the 23 year old Wishart would now be next in line? Well, not so fast. When Travis Hamonic got bloodied the team turned to Aaron Ness and the talk of Wishart in forums and Twitter got louder. With the Islanders heading out on a road-trip across the continent for the week, Wishart may be the insurance they need in case of injury.
The Islanders finally recalled Wishart this morning, returning Rhett Rakhshani to Bridgeport at the same time.
Clearly, Wishart is not the one of the first three options from Bridgeport and as a mid-first rounder who has already bounced around twice, expectations should be tempered. Two clubs were willing to part with him and while that doesn’t mean he’s damaged goods, that’s two clubs who thought they were better off without him.
Given how the Islanders have operated this year, waivers likely played an important role. Unless it’s an emergency situation (it’s not), Wishart would have to clear waivers to be returned to Bridgeport once called up. As we’ve seen, the team has chosen to use emergency recalls as much as possible throughout the year to minimize the need for sending players through waivers. The situation is different for both de Haan and Ness who can move about freely.
So the team is taking Wishart on the road trip. With the whole work week spent on the road to Winnipeg and on to St. Louis before returning home late Thursday, it’s a good idea to have an extra man with you. It’s possible we may be seeing him for an extended stay since I imagine there will be a reluctance to put him through waivers.
HALEY’S HATTER
The Sound Tigers won yet again Sunday night, 2-1 over the CT Whale. We’ll flash back to Saturday night’s 8-1 win over Springfield though. Here’s the third goal of Micheal Haley’s three goal performance courtesy islesenforcers Youtube channel.
Unfortunately, the video didn’t show the lone hat on the ice to celebrate the trick from Kevin Poulin.
Was I the only one with a hat when Haley score his 3rd ? #needmorehatsnexttime #greatteamwin

MEANWHILE IN MONTREAL…
There’s another fanbase that isn’t happy with the current state of affairs. They’ve been a bit distracted by the whole Scott Gomez not scoring thing and the Randy Cunneyworth Doesn’t Speak Much French thing to worry about a whole lot else, though. After last week’s game on Long Island, they’re reveling in Scott Gomez actually scoring a goal, complete with parodies of those ‘History Will Be Made’ ads that Versus ran last year. The question at the end of this one is pretty great.

Amazing that no one else was called up. Guess they are happy with everyone’s effort. Anybody going to do a story on the incredibly shrinking man Okposo? Or are we just going to ignore what is happening with him. he is back to the same player that got scratched earlier in the year
-
KEVIN,I think you missed my question among the 150 or so from the Game Day thread…how come, since Nolan, the Islanders always seem more tired than the other team, even in wins…and even the younger guys….they seam beat up and tired all the time. Remember under Lavvy & Nolan they would get stronger as the games went on…is it the training staff…are the players not in as good shape as the opponents?
-
This is no surprise at all. And who can blame Wang. The Isles will be playing in Qubec in 2015. aAnd we can blame all the dam politians for this mess
-
Its really mind boggling that Haley isn t in the lineup , he must have pulled a Nolan with someone’s spouse or talked bad about the evil regime.
-
Haley not being called up and playing for either Wallace, Rolston or Pandolfo is a joke. This team is so soft and can desperately use him. He would probably put up more pts then them also.
-
wishart looked decent to me and easily a upgrade to mottau and eaton.
glad hes getting a shot, he’s looked smooth in the offensive zone from what ive seen…
Congrats to Haley! thats probably the only occasion where i’d throw out my hat…how is he not up with the big club? Wallace’s value disappeared after his 2nd game.
Oh well, im planning on attending Sound Tigers playoff games and am psyched to see the players who im hoping are on the team next year
-
Maybe the soundtigers will play a playoff game at the Coliseum, since we won’t see real playoff games from the ISLES…
-
Haley Haley Haley Haley Haley Haley! You get my point. And honestly Wallace would be a good veteran addition in Bridgeport. Please please please insert Haley in the lineup.
-
I hope Haley does get called up so everyone can see that he is a 5 – 6 minute a game, energy guy. What are you really expecting this guy to do? Everyone says the Isles need toughness. Maybe so, but it’s lineup toughness not one guy toughness. He’s not going to make a difference.
-
Don, the comparable for Haley is Steve Webb, who had a positive influence on the entire lineup. Energy guy, sticks up for his teammates, and willing to drop the gloves. Energizes the crowd big-time. The key difference is Haley can pitch in an occasional goal.
-
Thank you dude
-
Kind of like an avery with balls not a mangina
-
-
Are you serious? I don’t expect him to score thirty goals. But he’ll be a hell of a lot better than Wallace. A line of haley martin on same line would look nice. And do you not remember what one guy brought to this team last year in konopka. Everyone has there place on the team and haley is the guy in the ice the keeps the other teams head on a swivel throwing there game off and possibly agitating them into a penalty and he can take the ten minute major rather than martin or hamonic who has other priorities on the ice. NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND! Because I know damn sure at least half the fans on here agree. But hey you’re entitled to your opinion you’re an islander fan so I’m just disagreeing with you not saying you’re wrong bro.
-
-
I was at the game. Haley’s goals were nice, Donovan and Cizikas looked excellent, and Nilsson quietly had a great game.
-
Don we all know Haley is not the difference for this team. We do need alot more. What does Wallace or Rolston bring to this team. Your answer nothing. Wallace plays 6 min as well.At least Haley can bring spark and energy and a presence of toughness. If someone roughs up Tavares or anyone else there is someone to answer to. Team toughness has to start somewhere. Teams take liberties with Tavares knowing there is no one to worry about. When Tavares gets knocked out then we will hear an uproar.
-
This team plays better with Haley in line up .Isn’t that worth something?
Wishart? Who cares . The guys is what 6 5′?and soft as spring mud.
Man do I miss the hammer -
Don we all know Haley is not the big piece we need. We need a lot more. But I rather have his 6 min over Wallace or Rolston. At least Haley can bring energy, toughness and grit that this team needs desperately. I have never seen a softer team then the Isles. Teams have to know someone is there to answer if shots are taken. Team toughness has to start somewhere and its not with Wallace.
-
I hear ya. And I like the guy. It just gets tiring of hearing the same things over and over. Bring up Haley. Wang and Snow suck. DP is the antichrist. I read this site for Isles news and good posts about hockey. But lately it’s been nothing but haters complaining about one thing or another. I get it. Lot’s of diehards who are tired of losing. I’m right there. But it sometimes seems that some people just post to complain. I guess I’m the guy who complains about the complainers.
-
Well when the same mistakes are repeated so will the complaints BUT I hear you Don. Hey I have a vision of cizikas centering martin and haley. That’s a nice fourth line that can actually get some quality minutes, fight, check.

Wishart’s call up is good news, bad news. It is good that we finally add a d-man with size and we get to see what if anything he has. Plus it is not a stretch to think that he will be an upgrade over whoever sits for him (if he dresses).
The bad news is that Rhett was sent down for him, meaning good ole Brian rOLDston gets to dress for another stretch of games. We should do something like when Prince started going by the symbol and being called the Artist Formerly Known as Prince …. Maybe we good use the $ for rOLDston and call him the Player Whose Contract Gets us to the Floor. You know since his only his salary means anything to the team. He is the old, forward version of DP.
-
I’ll give a bonus for every slapshot going towards roloston
-
-
Oh, and the Tim Wallace one man fantasy camp continues with no end in sight.
-
this should be the starting lineup 1. Moulson Taveras,Niederrieter2.Grabner,Ullstrom back to his normal position center,Nielsen 3.Okposo,bailey Martin 4.Haley,czikas pandolfo need him to kill penalties.1Hamonic,Mc donald 2Ness,Donovan both played together in farm, 3.Streit,Donovan.Speed ,Size Defense this is why youll never see this line up makes to much sense.
-
Where’s PA in this lineup of yours
And frans is not a winger
Ullstrum plays both center and wing
But otherwise a good lineup
Also we dont need pandaweful on this team

I really am bothered by the arrogance or ignorance of Garth Snow. I personally have been saying that Haley should be up here for months and judging from alot of posts most people want it also. You are not making any huge deals at the deadline, probably not at the draft either. You let a fan favorite in Konopka go when he would have taken anything to stay. Just call up Haley already Wallace has done absolutely NOTHING for weeks. Iam so sick of the ego of this ass hat Snow. Do one thing to make your fan base happy.

To answer all the above questions & complaints it all starts w/ OWNERSHIP!Plain & simple! All Wang has to do is bring in good solid hockey personnel w/ experience. He doesn’t have to overspend like he allowed to happen on DP,Rolston,Guerin,Weight,Yashin,Pandawful,Eaton,Mottau,Jurcina,KO,Grabner etc…He doesn’t even have to go over cap floor. All he has to do is bring in a REAL GM & get the hell out of the way.Is this too much to ask!!This guy is friggn loaded.I don’t care if he doesn’t meet financial goals set by him & turns that into a loss.Boo Hoo!!Sell the team already Wang & should they leave I can give 2 s**ts what becomes of them.I will be done w/ NHL(not a threat but fact). My opinion on the whole arena issue is they either come to an agreement in Nassau or they move to Quebec. Its that simple.Unless of course Devs move 1st.Can you imagine the NY metro area w/ 1 hockey team that is hated by over half its population(not saying they’re all Isles fans either).Devs or Isles will move but not both!Just sell Wang I have no faith in you owning a professional sports team.Bettman probably doesn’t either thats why they’re floating the Devs payroll. He wants Isles going to Quebec(as Wang alienates remaining fanbase) & percentage of remaining fans routing for Rags or Devs.Hence JT signing for 6 yrs.If there was ever a time for me to eat my words the time would be now!Hey LIers your taxes are going to go up anyway.WAKE UP!!You live in the most corrupt state!!Go Isles….for what its worth.
-
Worst owner …. Worst backup goalie one day GM the next day
-
-
Claude. soft as spring mud, good one, never heard that one before in all my years.lol
-
Why don’t one of you young guys challenge Snow to 5 rounds, winner gets what he wants, like making Snow bring up Haley. lol
-
Since Wishart is RFA after the season the isles have brought him to see if he can play at this level. He has played better in bridgeport over the win streak and this is his opportunity. Staios will be scratched. Also, having an extra will allow for some insurance if someone goes down or gets traded. Donovan will not be brought up unless there is an injury. They want him to get a full year in the AHL. The same for Cizikas.
Good to see Haley putting in some goals. He needs to show that ability to make it up here. It is important for him to show that he can make some plays when not fighting.
-
Haley isn’t getting called up because Charles frowns on fighting, same reason we let konopka go, and rechliez before him, Haley will be gone from the organization as soon as the years over.Anyone notice Matt Martins fighting is way down and he usually tries to draw a 2 minute minor instead of actually fighting now? Smart kid, probably realized if you are too tough Charles will ship you right outtve here,.this is a Charles issue all the way guys not a Garth issue, Garth was a tough scrappy goalie and most likely would like to field a tougher team but Charles will never let it happen, just another reason why he is the worst owner in sports, just because he’s ok with losing millions every year doesn’t make him a good owner sorry.
-
@itsuckbeinganislandersfan:I didnt leave j.p out he is one of my favorite islanders I believe he is going to be traded I dont think there going to resign him I hope i am wrong. As for nielsen I reallly believe he would be a better scorer as a winger he is the best two way hockey player they got and i love the way ullstrom played both ends with speed that line might work. Strome is a center so one of them is going to have learn to play wing next year.Strome or Nielsen I think Nielsen played wing in Denmark might I be wrong on that.
-
Well Charles sucks! Other guys would play tougher with a tough guy in the lineup. It sometimes requires that first guy to get those things going before others stepup and realize they have it in them as well. I mean playing in the East with a traditionaly tough division its just plain stupid not to follow suit. And seriously go back and watch the last 5 Isles games home or away and just watch the stands, NOBODY stands, its BORING, Getting the fans into the game one way or another will only help the talent get furthur into the game. Blah Blah we need line toughness what a joke hardly any team with toughness has it on their topline no sense in arguing this topic. You just dont get it, you could just run a guy like Haley during whatever shift you want the other teams player attention. He does NOT have to play on Taveres line to be effective. I always thought this arguement was against the BIG lugs that cant skate that they couldnt run against the players taking the liberties cause they were to SLOW but Haley is like 5-11 playing like he is 6-4, and can SKATE and SCORE a little??? I just dont get it???

Observations of a die-hard:
Rolston is a sucubus for this team. (meaning he sucks the life out of us).
Okposso is way too big and strong to be losing all the puck battles he does.
The coaching staff’s refusal to experiment with inserting our youth rather than giving valuable, wasted minutes to players that will not be with us next year(at least they better not)!
Cannot understand why management can’t see we have a gaping hole in the toughness area.
The few valuable players we do have will be burnt out before we ever become a playoff team.Garth and his poker face is really annoying. Just be honest, man. Tell it like it is. We will not be spending money until we get some sort of commitment for an arena.
Capuano always being happy with the “effort”.
he may be happy with the players effort, but the management effort, and his own are a serious question mark! Losing is waaaay too tolerated.J.T. signed here for 6 yrs. knowing he will be playing in Quebec very soon!

Okposo needs to step up!
Bailey needs some offensive help(Nino)
Wallace is doing fine-he’s doing what a 4th liner should do. He wins puck battles and usually the isles 4th line plays in the offensive end more than the defensive end. They don’t produce but are eating up minutes while the other lines are resting. Rolston has got to go please!!!! -
How can we get rid of Garth ? Bring up Haley , brings a lot more than Wallace or Rolston and will sell tickets. My wife who doesn t like sports asked me the other night why he isn t on the team , he actually brought excitement.
-
Rick Nash is what the islanders desperately need.
+big, skilled forward that could be JTs winger for years
+is signed till 2018 do he can’t “walk”
+Columbus wants long term pieces and islanders have a lot of prospects and not enough space
+this will attract FA (a glaring need D)
+ rolston contract will become expendable
+ more ticket sales and better Arena proposalsI would give up this years 1st, nino, Nelson/lee, next years 3rd
-
Ya but the problem is Nash has a no trade clause which allows him to basically pick the team he wants to play for. He’s suffered this long in Columbus, do you think he want to go to the islanders? This guy wants to go to a team that is almost there…cup contending I mean…not playoff contending. Isles would have to give up someone who can play now as well as prospects. Okposo, PA, one of our goalies and a first rounder

“All Roads lead to Rome”. Charles Wang has time & time again demonstrated his myopic egocentricities that sadly has translated into an enless playoff draught. From what was once a glorious team to now a laughing stock. Whether it is the selection of GM, or coach or players to the tyrannical approach to his “Lighthouse”Project, all evidence points to his incompetence. Egocentrics like that NEVER introspect and consider their own accountability when it comes to failure. The difference between a good CEO & a great CEO is the latter has ppl work for him that not only is smarter and more competent than they, but are willing to ‘jump on a grenade’ for their company. The fuedal organization chart is clearly a recipe for failure. Although I do not doubt that Wang believes fighting in hockey is deleterious to the overall image of the sport. It is pure hubris that one can actually conclude that that his policy will not only help the Islanders win but change the culture physical toughness in the NHL. One could argue insanity would be a more accurate adjective than hubris at this time. Yes, Charles please sell the team, in fact why don’t you sell it to the fans (ala Green Bay Packers). Let we fans put our $$$ where our mouths are. Allow your delusional arrogance to convince you to do so, so you can laugh at we “commoners’. God gracious he’s worse than Mr. Potter in ‘It’s a wonderful Life’. Anyone have is e-mail to forward that?
Last, Did I hear we’re scratching Wishart & playing Reasoner tonight? If that’s the case, 5-1 Pegs tonight. -
If the flyers can dress 7 rookies, and get production
Then why can’t we give it a try -
If Zack Parise and Suter are still ufa’s this summer the isles will have to throw them a blank check. If the isles can make that happen then they are back in business for real!!!!!
-
As much as I loke Parise, I’d rather have Bobby Ryan with the limited $$$ we have
-
We won’t get Bobby Ryan … But I definitely could see us landing Parise ….JP,,,
-
Saw Ness at Saturday’s game looks like he has skill but he could not hold people along the boards and was useless clearing the front of the net. This is why I have been saying even a not that aggressive big guy (like Jurcina or Wishart) is better than a small guy, even if it is just to take up open space in the defensive zone. They will not be competitive until they are BIGGER and I agree with everyone else the team is just not aggressive enough which makes the games boring-DRAFT BIG PEOPLE forget these 6 foot defensemen like Donovan unless they are strong like Potvin they can’t handle big teams and players-including the Rangers who are very big

Kevin, I am surprised Donovan is not on the radar for a call up unless the Islanders don’t want to deplete Bridgeport for their playoff run. He looks like he is ready. I would not be surprised if he ended up being a better NHL player deHaan who continues to be plagued with injuries.
